Summer’s Gifts

by Cynthia White Flower

Summer is the happy season! Nature exudes her brilliance as she sings, loves, grows and shines… Summer’s bliss reminds us of the simplicity of life. We are gifted with more time in the light, as the days seem to grow longer. The sun’s enthusiastic rays reach out to us, encouraging us to seek its company. The bees show us how to pace ourselves, as they take their sweet time floating from one flower to another, all the while revitalizing life. Webster defines “revitalization” as “the action of imbuing something with new life and vitality.” Summer inspires us to rejuvenate, regenerate, and renew ourselves and our surroundings. Spring’s promise is Summer’s manifestation as Nature, in her lush exhibition, inspires us to live! My beloved husband, James, Little Eagle standing Strong, says that “Even though the squirrel appears to be playing, it is working and having fun along the way.

4

As we enjoy our work, the tasks become effortless. Summer provides the time and the squirrel shows us the way. The deer is also a good example and totem. It has a magical way of regenerating its antlers, as it teaches us that we can regenerate by reaching higher. It also shows us that we can change directions quickly, and handle situations with gentleness and grace. Then there is the lizard that can regenerate its tail. This totem teaches us that we can regenerate that which is lost, and it encourages us to be courageous, and detach from the ego to live in the heart.” Summer encourages us to participate in life’s dance of activity and expansion. We are reminded that, amazing life, courses through us to be expressed. The song of summer in her many forms invites’ us to utilize the spirit of summer to re-energize and regenerate! To enjoy the process! To embrace life

June / July 2018

is to appreciate summer’s gifts. Summer is a time of growth. Gary Zuka says that “Each solstice is a domain of experience unto itself. At the summer solstice, all is green and growing, potential coming into being, the miracle of manifestation painted large on the canvas of awareness.” Summer allows us time to contemplate. “Lady Bird Johnson teaches us that “Where flowers bloom, so does hope.” Mother Ammachi, the Hugging Saint, encourages us to reflect upon who we are. She says, “The sun shines down, and its image reflects in a thousand different pots filled with water. The reflections are many, but they are each reflecting the same sun. Similarly, when we come to know who we truly are, we will see ourselves in all people.” A Tibetan Proverb states that “The secret to living well and longer is: eat half, walk double, laugh triple and love without measure.” “Love is the whole thing. We are only the pieces” says Rumi. We are greeted by the smiles on the faces of the flowers, reminding us that life is beautiful and so are we. The insects sing their songs of attraction, reminding us that we speak our truth and it comes to us. The vibrant blue skies prompt us to remain calm, and the sounds of the waves rushing up and moving away reminds us that we are never stuck. Paramahansa Yogananda challenges us to “Change yourself and you have done your part in changing the world.” As we quiet our minds to accept the beauty which surrounds us, and to hear the voice of God within, we are reminded by the Psalm 46:10 to “Be still, and know that I am God.” Our world is a reflection of what we are. From the esteemed founder of Iyengar Yoga, Mr. B. K. S. Iyengar we are told that “Healthy plants and trees yield abundant flowers and fruits. Similarly, from a healthy person, smiles and happiness shine forth like the rays of the sun.” Summer gives us time to realize that we are happy. We can rejuvenate, regenerate, renew. We can get to know ourselves, and we can let others know us too. Let’s come out or our shells to enjoy the gifts of summer.

ASpiritual sk Sage Woman: Advice

for the Real World with Sage Woman

Dear Sage Woman, My question is around money and finances. I seem to have bad luck around making money and saving money. I have worked hard my whole life and feel as if I have nothing to show for it. How can I turn my luck around? Thank you for your time, Dani L ___________ Blessings and gratitude to you Dani! Thank you for reaching out. So many of us struggle with the energy of money and finances. I will shed light on this subject from an intuitive and spiritual place. First of all, know that I honor exactly where you are right now and feel your frustration. I will offer words that flow from Creator, without judgment or shoulds. I ask you to sit back and receive these words with an open heart and open mind. Money is energy. Plain and simple, it only has the power we assign it. It is nothing without our energy and beliefs we put into it. The beauty in this is the ability to shift your beliefs whenever you choose. Beliefs are habits. Many beliefs are passed down to us about money from our parents and society. Some beliefs come from fear, lack and limitation. “Money is the root of all evil”, “Money is dirty”, “ Money does not bring you happiness”. Just to name a few. What we tell ourselves over and over, and what we adopt as our life’s beliefs show up in what we choose to live by. Perhaps today Dani, you can choose to take a look at your own beliefs around money and making a living and begin to shift your perception into seeing money as a divine tool. To have a balanced relationship with money, one needs to respect its energy.

6

This also may be a great time to look at the work you are doing to generate money and evaluate if it is time for a change. Choosing to honor your own personal gifts and passions is a great place to start. When we make a strong and intentional commitment to take action in the direction of our dreams we can tap into the universal flow of abundance. When we love what we do and are in gratitude and appreciation we attract more things to be in appreciation. Financial freedom and financial independence aren’t necessarily just about what your bank account looks like, it is also about freedom from the fear of money and trusting that if you respect that Universal forces will respect you back and you will be provided for with the right opportunities to support you and life of your dreams. This may sound radical, however we all know we have the power to create lack and chaos, so why is it so hard to see we have the same power to create joy, abundance and the life we desire to live? Money is a divine tool if we allow it to be. Let’s take one belief, money is the root of all evil. Better put the lust of money has the potential to be the root of all evil. If one chooses to use money as a negative energy it is not about the money, it is about the person’s choice. The truth is that money is much like a gun or a knife in that its results depends on whose hands it is in. I strongly recommend the book by Marsha Sinetar, “Do what you love and the money will follow.” To do what you love, you must first find what that is. I encourage you to start at the core. Your own beliefs about money, finances and work. Feel free to reach out to me for some Intuitive counseling around this subject. It is my passion and specialty.

A Beautiful Bouquet of Healing Flower Sounds by Jill Mattson

Plants have always been the primary source of healing substances for mankind. The ancient day Shaman inherited a wealth of knowledge about plants and their medicinal uses from his fore fathers. Plants growing in the wild offered abundant variety and powerful tonics for early man’s use in healing. Modern Pharmaceutical Companies systematically study and test plants for new drug development programs. To this day, plants are responsible for far more beneficial drugs than manmade synthetic routes. The race is on to find rare new plants in the jungles of the Amazon for pharmaceutical uses before they are lost forever through extinction. Plants clearly have a unique physical nature, which we (and other living beings) depend upon: for food and nourishment, for important material and chemical components (for building and clothing

8

needs) and for powerful medicinal properties and healing powers. Beyond these obvious applications a deeper appreciation of the power of plants is arising. As we increase our understanding of the holistic, irreducible nature of the universe and all living systems, it is indisputable that plant life functions on many sophisticated and subtle levels. Plants alter more than our physical bodies. Plants are sentient beings. Plants demonstrate consciousness; they feel and move; they constantly respond to the surrounding environment. Sensitive experiments dating from the 1920’s showed that plants possess a nervous system. Polygraphs have demonstrated that plants respond to human thought and speech. These “simpler” forms possess a life force, which has important implications for us. Plants and people share in the divinity of the grand design of nature.

June / July 2018

One of the most famous and respected names associated with the unique use of plants in healing is Dr. Edward Bach of England (1886 - 1936). Edward Bach discovered that certain flowering plants are able to alleviate human emotional problems (which affects our physical health). Bach extracted the essence or vibratory imprint from particular flowers and transferred this energy imprint into pure water which is then ingested orally or placed sublingually. These nonmaterial essences function as vibrational medicine - healing energy. The “flower-essences” work on the multidimensional mind-body-spirit being. Each healing flower offers unique benefits to an individual. Long before Dr. Bach, Ancient Tribes in South America similarly found native flowers useful for soothing physical, emotional and psychological illnesses. The flower-essences balance, unblock and harmonize various subtle and fine energy systems of the bodymind-spirit being. They are targeted to improve emotions. Healing our emotions is an inseparable process from the physical healing process. At the deepest level everything (and everyone) is energy and all layers of healing interact. An exciting new development has surfaced in recent years that allows the direct application of the floweressences through sound frequencies - bypassing the physical flower altogether. In this novel approach, the same marvelous benefits that many have long enjoyed via the traditional water-borne flower-essences, can be quickly and effectively bestowed through sound. Pioneers such as Sharry Edwards and Dr. Royal Rife spent their lives studying, measuring and deriving vibrational energies for healing. The ancient Hindus spent thousands of years perfecting sounds to improve a huge variety of health issues. Eventually, Sound Healers identified exact wavelengths of sound to improve specific ailments. A revealing example of the nature of sound in healing is reported by Sharry Edwards. Niacin is a vitamin that is necessary for life. If a person is deficient in niacin they can take supplements. A flushing of the skin often occurs with the use of niacin supplements. Edwards found that she can administer the frequency

Infinity

equivalent of niacin (using only sound waves) to a person and the same nutritional benefit is achieved; astonishingly the skin flushing will also occur. As reported above, the benefits of the flower remedies can be passed directly through the use of sound. The author’s work has endeavored to extend the benefits of the flower-essences by composing “Healing Flower Music” (Symphonies) that employ the sound frequency associations of the flowers. The characteristic flower frequency is embedded in a complex musical composition. The listener receives the flower essence energy from this frequency, but much more. The frequency need not be loud or isolated. The body is adept at incorporating subtle frequencies from a complex soundscape. In the Healing Flower Symphonies the multidimensional musical composition first expresses the negative emotion that the flower energy can remove. Listening to the negative aspect offers catharsis to loosen and clear emotional blockages. People can be so overwhelmed by negative energies that they cannot receive positive energies until the clear emotional baggage is cleared. The symphony then plunges into the positive emotional transformation. This positive movement uplifts the listener and together with the accompanying flower frequency builds habits of positive emotions. In an example, for those who live in a dreamy, notfully-awake and alert state, the Clematis flower is the remedy. Clematis is the reality flower essence. The Clematis symphony continually beats out the flower’s frequency. On top of this track, the overarching music begins with “breath” becoming the percussion beat, combining with pleasing, diffuse tones to create a foggy state of dreaminess. As the song continues, the music changes, becoming crystal clear and helping to define one’s perceptions and conclusions, and to dance in the glory of the fully awakened light with clear melodic tones. In closing, the benefits of the flower-essences have been widely utilized by people since ancient times (Continued on pg. 10)

9

(Continued from pg. 9)

to gain a gentle emotional lift or helpful resolution. There now exists a total vibrational energy path to the same blessings - listening to the frequency associated with the desired Flower. The transformation of sentient plant energy to pure vibrational energy is yet another manifestation that all living entities and all energies are one in the grand design. For our part we need to care for and preserve nature; enjoy the bounty of a simple wildflower to help fill your deepest emotional needs. References Barnard, Julian. Longevity Resources Discovering Optimal Health Naturally

Welcome to our feature, “Longevity Resources.” Each issue we will cover topics that will explore endless possibilities in achieving optimal health. The statements or content of the article in this feature is strictly to educate and inform. It is not intended to replace the care and advice of your regular physician.

The Risks of Unhealthy Sports Drinks How do you contaminate something as good as water. Just plain old H2O, but believe it of not, there is a lot of power in a gallon of water. Do you have to contaminate water with chemicals such as caffeine, dyes, carbonic acid, sugar, corn syrup laced with mercury, nutrasweet (pheylalanine and aspartine) as well as other mineral products that add to the flavor? In addition there is added coloring agents and preservatives such as sorbates and BHT which are known to be toxic agents to the body. I know all these things make the drinks taste good, but are they good for you? Some of the drinks are so loaded with caffeine that the adrenal glands are bouncing off the wall. Yes the adrenal glands, which sit on top of your kidneys, is a power source that makes your heart go so fast

June / July 2018

and your legs go like gangbusters. When stimulated it is better known as “adrenaline” being produced, which makes your heart beat accelerate. This action gives you strength for the occasion, but can be very short in endurance. Weight lifters use some of these drinks to increase their capacity to lift a lot of weight. However, I wonder if they are aware of the damage they are doing to their bodies. The over stimulation to the adrenal glands is short lived and with constant stimulation can wear the adrenal glands out, better known as adrenal exhaustion. When the adrenal glands quit, they put you on a slab and take you to the morgue. Fatigue is another result of this constant over-stimulation.

There are fortunes being made by selling these power drinks, but at the expense of exhausted adrenal glands of the general public. The addition of caffeine can be very strong and hard to break away from the habit of drinking highly caffeinated drinks.

Copy right 2011 Paul F. Fulk, D.C., F.A.S. A

So why do we want to drink such high powered

drinks that could possibly cause you to have a heart attack? I tested one of the most popular drinks used for restoring electrolytes that is often given away at ball games only to find that it is a heart attack in a can. When testing the microsiemen (MS) level of this drink it was 2,125,00. Anything above 1,200 MS can cause clots to form in your body according to Dr. T. C. McDaniels, who is still living a very healthy life at 97. Colloidal chemistry is not commonly understood in today’s food chemistry field. It is a way of measuring the electro-potential of fluids in our body and other fluids as well. Even Dayton’s city water has a measurement microsiemen level of 465,000. But many of the power drinks and even the more common colas are very high in microsiemen levels anywhere from 493,0002,500,000 MS. All could be very devastating to the organ function in your body. This may be one of the reasons our life span is so short. Stress alone is hard on the adrenal glands without using some of the sport drink to get a buzz, or to hype them up. They can get exhausted very easily without any extra help.

We Grow as We Help Plants Grow

by Josephine B. Adamson, MD, MPH, CMT

I grew up not far from A.R.E. headquarters, and I played outside every day after school. My siblings and I learned, sometimes reluctantly, how to plant seeds, weed, prune, and mow grass. Our parents filled the house with plants and flowers and taught us the name of every plant in our environment. It’s no surprise that my sister is a landscape architect and my brother grows beautiful roses. My father, now 89, continues to maintain a beautiful ornamental garden. Dad knows instinctively what both the Edgar Cayce readings and modern medical research tell us: gardening—working outside to help things grow—is good for our health. The Cayce health readings were quite emphatic when it came to encouraging people to get outside. There are many readings and research studies that describe the benefits of gardening for our bodies, minds, and spirits.

12

Recent research studies demonstrate the benefits of gardening which can reduce the risk of both physical and mental health problems. These studies show that gardening is, perhaps unexpectedly, an excellent exercise choice. A large study of Swedish men and women over 60 found that regular gardening reduced the risk of both stroke and heart attack by approximately 30%. Scientists point to yardwork’s exercise and increased Vitamin D levels from sun exposure as possible cardiovascular protective mechanisms. Another large long-term study from Australia found that those older adults who participated in daily gardening had an almost 40% decrease in the incidence of dementia. The strength, agility, endurance, problem-solving, and multisensory awareness that gardening demands may confer benefits for brain health. Gardening is also reported to improve our immune systems.

June / July 2018

Not only may Vitamin D contribute to the body’s ability to defeat viruses that cause colds and flus but scientists have recently identified a common soil bacterium that actually relieves the physical manifestations of immune system dysfunctions such as psoriasis, allergies, and asthma. Researchers also suggest that inhaling or ingesting the same soil mycobacterium species may help decrease inflammation which may play a part in depression, thereby contributing to better mental health. Studies from professionals in the field of Horticultural Therapy show that gardening’s integration of physical activity, cognitive stimulation, natural surroundings, and work satisfaction also improves symptoms of depression and other mental illness. Even for those experiencing more typical stress, gardening seems to lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and raise levels of reported self-esteem scores. Edgar Cayce’s grandson, the late Dr. Charles Thomas Cayce, a child psychologist, used 15 specific recommendations in the Cayce readings to help those with mental or emotional suffering. Prominent among those recommendations was yardwork, or as he liked to say, “breaking a sweat”. Dr. Cayce found that the combination of gardening with the other recommendations, in every case, reduced patients’ mental suffering and need for psychiatric medication. We would all do well to follow the advice in the reading Edgar Cayce gave for a young pregnant woman: (Q) Can exercise be continued during pregnancy? Also daily housework? (A) Normal exercise should be continued throughout pregnancy; else there’s very apt to become static somewhere in body. (Q) Can gardening be done during that time? (A) Can be very well done. Keep in the open and close to nature—this is the better way of activity. (457-9)

connects us deeply to the rhythms of the earth’s cycles. Watching a seed sprout provides proof of one’s ability to accomplish positive change. Nurturing a plant to fruition gives motivation for continued effort. Gardening, especially planting or taking care of a large tree or shrub, even allows the results of our labors to last well beyond our own lives. Indeed, we grow as we help plants grow.

New Alternative Medicine Frequency Devices to Improve Your Health by Brian Eastman

Advancing Technology Generates New Alternative Medicine Frequency Devices to Improve Your Health: The concepts behind using frequencies for healing.

Arguably, inventor Royal Rife pioneered the idea that use of specific electromagnetic frequencies could counteract causes of ill health. His revelation: that just as a soprano can shatter a crystal goblet by singing just the right note, so one could destroy cancer, bacteria, virus and fungus cells. As electronics moved from vacuum tube to transistor to circuit board and as computing power has grown so that today’s tablet has more power than a 3-room 1950s IBM, inventors have expanded what they can do with frequencies. In this article I will discuss three Alt Med devices which reflect how different inventors/developers have leveraged advances in electromagnetic frequency technology. I want to be clear: everything I describe here is not an FDA-approved medical device. Their makers describe their products as available for experimental and educational use only. Any anecdotal information I provide is for illustrative purposes. Neither I nor the developers make any claims or promises about effectiveness. Full disclosure: I am part of the Alt Med community. I have personal experience with these devices and know the people involved with their design and manufacture. Where I can I help people get the connections to acquire these and other devices.

14

Device 1: Rife-based “Blue Light” radiant frequency transmitter. This particular unit was developed using notes from Rife’s original work, by an engineer diagnosed with terminal cancer who needed a cure. Using the electronic and software advances of the 1990s his unit automatically cycles through all Rife’s frequencies. Now cancer-free, he manufactured the device. He can’t remember how many they made, but it wasn’t a lot. The unit is out of production and used ones are selling for $6,000 to $20,000. About its effectiveness: I know two former cancer patients, now cancer-free, who give credit to their Blue Lights. My wife and I use ours to destroy the colds and flu she brings home from her teaching job. When one of us starts feeling cold-ish or flu-ish, we use the Blue Light over night and we are usually fine in the morning.

Device 2: Waves of Light. In 2015 Jeff Poe created Waves of Light. It has seven discrete focused colourmodifiable lights, one each for each chakra center in our bodies. Each light is electronically controlled to adjust the light colours and patterns so they open,

June / July 2018

cleanse, balance and align each chakra. Users report everything from sensations of peace and relaxation to the release of physical and emotional issues. Poe sells them for $2500, and provides sessions on his unit for $20/20 minutes.

Device 3: TotalZap 3-in-1. In 2017 a Quebecois engineer designed and built a multi-modality device which incorporates Dr. Clark’s anti-parasite programming originated plus the Rife frequency programming mentioned above. Users access over 1100 health-improvement templates of various frequency combinations and they can program their own. I know of no other device which offers both Clark and Rife programming.

or new TotalZap from Canada contact me, Brian Eastman. Phone 513 724 HEAL (4325). Text 513 278 7161.

About the author: Brian Eastman, a LIIFT Practitioner with offices in Cincinnati, Springboro and Dayton, founded the monthly Healing Gatherings where healers give presentations and demonstrations of their skills. He and his wife offer no-charge access to their alt-med healing equipment including BEMER, TotalZap, the Blue Light, and Kacelia. They help people purchase the equipment too.

Banana Bread Plantains are much firmer than bananas and have a lower sugar content. Plantains are starchy and can be cooked, when over ripe, they are sweet. It is important to note, that bananas should be ripe when eaten because consuming an unripe banana can cause irritation to the stomach.

INGREDIENTS:

The possibilities of adding bananas to your diet if you have not already done so are endless. They come in their own handy wrapper and can be taken as a quick snack for lunch. Bananas are excellent for chopping and mashing, and can be used in fruit salads, breads, muffins and practically any desserts. They are delicious in puddings, ice creams, yogurt, trail mixes and more! They also freeze very well and can be added to smoothies for a quick burst of energy on a hot summer day!

• 1 cup mashed ripe organic bananas (about 2 ½ medium or 2 large bananas)

Enjoy a picnic in the park and don’t forget the handy dandy top banana! Nature’s healthy way to energize your day!

• Optional: ½ cup mix-ins like chopped walnuts or pecans, chocolate chips, raisins, chopped dried fruit, fresh banana slices…

HIce ealthy Banana Cream INGREDIENTS: • 6 organic bananas, broken into pieces, and frozen •1 can (13.5 oz) organic coconut milk • 2-5 tablespoons of organic honey, depending on desired sweetness

• 1/3 cup melted organic coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil or high quality vegetable oil • ½ cup organic honey or maple syrup • 2 eggs

• ¼ cup organic milk of choice or water • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1 teaspoon organic vanilla extract • ½ teaspoon salt • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus more on top • 1 ¾ cups organic flour of choice

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 325 degrees F and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan. In a large bowl, beat the oil and honey together with a whisk. Add the eggs and beat well, then whisk in the mashed bananas and milk. (If your coconut oil solidifies on contact with cold ingredients, simply let the bowl rest in a warm place for a few minutes, like on top of your stove, or warm it for about 10 seconds in the microwave.)

* Optional toppings, such as shredded coconut, dates, nuts, etc.

Add the baking soda, vanilla, salt and cinnamon, and whisk to blend. Lastly, switch to a big spoon and stir in the flour, just until combined. Some lumps are ok. If you’re adding any additional mix-ins, gently fold them in now.

DIRECTIONS:

Pour the batter into your greased loaf pan and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.

Place all ingredients in a blender, or food processor and blend together until smooth. Serve immediately for a soft-serve consistency, or freeze for a firmer ice cream. Sprinkle with your favorite toppings, and enjoy!

Miracle Love, Part I by Wayne Holmes I was taught that miracles occur when The Divine momentarily sets aside the natural laws of the Universe. I’ve often wanted to perform miracles. What I failed to comprehend was the miraculous power of love. According to a worldly mindset, wrongs need to be righted. An eye-for-an-eye mentality is prevalent and dominates the majority of world thought when it comes to how to treat one another.

Baker Chiropractic Testimonial

I Went To 8 Different Chiropractors and None of Them Could Help But Dr. Baker Did!

Love suspends the law of justice and uses forgiveness to replace it with the law of grace. Grace is often defined as unmerited favor. Instead of punishment, we are forgiven. Instead of imprisonment of the mind or of the body, we find freedom. Where hate threatens to overpower us, love has the strength to abolish hatred and bring peace. Love is miraculous and perhaps the only miracle we need. Turning water into wine is a showstopper, but forgiveness and love are the true signs of strength and power. Anyone and everyone can perform love miracles, and the more we perform, the more we transform the world — ours and others. I no longer strive to perform healing miracles, healings of the body, that is. I do strive to perform healings of the heart and spirit by practicing forgiveness and love every day. Miracles will happen. You may not notice them at first because it’s like watching grass grow. The grass does grow, and miracles of love happen all around us.

Debbie P. with Dr. Patrick Baker I have been living here in Ohio for the past 3 years and I have seen 8 different chiropractors. I am a hard person to adjust because I have been in a few accidents that left me, on two separate occasions, unable to walk. Not one chiropractor here has been able to “get all of me in”, until I found Dr. Baker. Dr. Baker was able to adjust my neck, middle and lower back unlike the other 8 different chiropractors! What a great feeling! For the first time in 3 long years I could feel the difference in my body. I cannot describe how good that feeling is. I never have a headache, my asthma is under control now, I stand up straighter and even my vision has improved. Before chiropractic, I thought I had to live in chronic pain, now I have seen the difference in myself. My quality of life has improved and I am grateful for it.* Sincerely, Debbie P.

Moving with Animals

by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger

Over the years Terri and I have worked with heartbroken clients who have lost pets either during or after moving from one place to another. We learned a lot by working through this tragic situation with them. Sometimes no matter how careful you are, a beloved pet can still become lost during a move. Occasionally the outcome is miraculous, with the pet making its way back to its old home. Clients who have persistently posted flyers, and contacted vets and rescue organizations in their new location, their old location, and everywhere in between have sometimes located and reunited with their pets. More often, unfortunately, the pet is not found. When we began planning our move from the country to our new home in the suburbs, we began discussing how we could prepare our 6 dogs and cats for the move. We began talking to them about it as soon as we started packing things to declutter the old house

20

before putting it on the market. We explained that we were finding a new house for all of us to live in, and that they would all be coming with us. No one would be left behind ( even the barn cat). We explained that we were their forever home, no matter what physical location that might be. Home was us, not a place. This was especially important as two of our dogs had been rehomed (one recently) by other people. It was also important because the 3 cats have never lived anywhere else. We continued talking to them throughout the whole process, telling them about the new house and reminding them that everyone was coming with us. Since our dogs would not have a dog door in the new house, we began house training again with them, blocking off the dog door and teaching them a routine of being let out before we moved. Our indoor/outdoor cat would need to learn to be a house

June / July 2018

cat again, and our barn cat - who has spent her entire life outside, needed to learn to live indoors with dogs. Our animals had huge transitions to make too! One thing we decided to do was board our dogs and cats while the packers and movers were working, and during the move itself. We have never boarded any of our dogs and cats, so we did not make the decision lightly. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we made during this whole process. We did have an adjustment period when we brought them home to the new house, but it was a huge relief to know they were safe during the move itself. We also made sure we had a secure fence up for the dogs before they came to the new house. For our barn cat, we set up her familiar barn nesting space in our basement and let her be down there for the first two weeks. We then put up a high gate that allows her to interact safely with the dogs, and has also allowed our other female cat to go in and interact with her in a very large space. The next step will be to move the gate to the top of the steps so she can choose to come up to the upstairs level safely. From there we will slowly open the cat door in that gate and allow her to come out when she is ready. We have had some adjustment issues, particularly with our small dog who decided marking in the new house was ok. We are working through that with him, and he is slowly getting better. Having close neighbors, and lots of traffic, people, and other dogs very close to them has been a huge adjustment for our dogs. We have fantastic neighbors who also have dogs, and they have been great with ours. Our dogs are learning to watch, and not bark. It has been a huge achievement for them. It took about 2 weeks for all of them to realize that this was their new house, and relax.

*If you are unable to board your pets during the move itself, make absolutely sure they are secure while you are moving things out/in. That means crate them, or confine them in a room or safely fenced area that they cannot get out of, and do not leave them alone in an empty house if you can help it. *When you transport them make sure they are in a secure carrier, or on a secure martingale collar or sturdy harness and lead for dogs. *Dogs can slip their normal collars when they panic and pull. Be extremely careful to not open car doors until the animals are securely under control. *Make sure your animals are microchipped, or at bare minimum have their collars and tags on them while transporting. *Show your cats where the litter boxes are right away. If you intend to let your cat go outdoors in your new home, wait a couple of weeks before doing so. *Be patient. Your animals may have accidents due to stress. Remember you know this is home, but it will take them some time to understand that!

Here’s a list of lessons learned from our move: *Prepare your animals ahead of time for any changes to their basic routine… things like no dog door, no fence for dogs, cats changing from outdoor to indoor etc. *Begin talking with your pets as soon as the boxes come out so they know why, and that they are coming with you.

TParents’ he Summer Balancing Act: Bliss vs. Children’s Boredom? by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE How many times have you heard your child say, “I’m bored!”? How many times do you think you’ll hear it this summer? How many times do you want to hear it? None? Then here are some tips that can allow you both to relax and recharge this summer. Are you and your children excited about summer break and getting a break from the stressful schoolyear routines? Are you thinking of ideas for how to relax and keep your children busy, so boredom doesn’t set in? Like just about everything else in life, especially family life, balance is the key. So how do you find and keep that sweet spot, where you can step back, recharge, and seek some summer bliss, without your children becoming bored, antsy, or lazy in ways that aren’t good for them? Parents & Children Have Different Summer Goals When given a break from schedules and routines, most children don’t have the same desire to relax and blissout as adults do. This is developmentally appropriate. It’s healthy for them to be moving and grooving. So you probably have been thinking about activities they can be doing. You don’t want to pack the summer so tightly that it’s just as stressful as the school year, though. You also want to avoid the other extreme, having children who sit like bumps on a log, looking at electronic devices for hours on end. Bodies and brains need exercise! Research has shown such passive activity can have negative long-term consequences on growing brains and bodies.

22

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends keeping all screens off around babies and toddlers younger than 18 months. They say a little screen time can be okay for older toddlers, and children ages two and older should get no more than an hour of screen time per day. So here’s your rule of thumb for busting through summer boredom using a Balanced parenting style: Parents are not responsible for entertaining their children and keeping them busy. Their job is to teach children how to battle boredom in healthy ways. Then, it is up to children to entertain themselves. Children’s Summer Bodies & Brains For most adults, boredom is only a state of mind. Children, however, feel boredom in both their bodies and brains, so they usually want (and need) physical or mental activities to do. Your task is to help children learn how to bust through their boredom in healthy ways, by engaging them in creative brainstorming and skill development. So how can you do this? Here are some helpful hints: At the beginning of summer or before a car trip, do some brainstorming. List all the activities the child can do independently. Get the needed supplies to do them, like arts and craft supplies. Then post the list on the fridge. Whenever you hear the “B” word, “boredom,” refer them to their list. Take them to the library regularly, so they always have some kind of a book to read. Go to an educational supply store and let them pick out one workbook or other activity to stay fresh on each of their academic subjects over the summer. Think about field trips that have educational value, like museums, summer classes or lessons, and/or summer camps. For long car trips, have word games or thinking games available. Here are some ideas:

June / July 2018

Buy road trip games like: Mind Trap, Password, BrainQuest, travel versions of board games. Create road trip games from riddles, jokes, educational activities, and puzzles. Free activities can make great road trip games, like counting license plates, 20 Questions, Rock-PaperScissors, and “I Spy.” Plan a few day trips or outings throughout the summer. These do not have to cost money. A picnic in the park or bike ride on a new path will do. If you get memberships at pools, museums, or similar places, they can often payoff in long-term savings and break up the monotony of always doing the same thing. If you follow these suggestions and your child still uses the “B” word, you can say, “It’s up to you to stay busy and productive. What are your options?” No one finds the true meaning of Joy or Life in an electronic box. It’s inside our heads (imagination, creativity, thinking) and out “there” in the world (involvement with people and causes). So use these tips to help your children “get with the program” and get connected to Life. Children Summer Spirituality

Some children as young as three can understand what meditation is and how to do it. Sitting meditations still could be a challenge for them, if they last longer than about five minutes. Moving meditations or being mindful in their play can help them find peace and bliss in their summer activities. With realistic expectations and a little pre-planning and skills-building, you and your children can all achieve the same goal --- having a simple summer schedule that allows for relaxation, regeneration and re-energizing --- through different means that maintain balance and bring bliss.

If you want your children to develop their spiritual side, in addition to their brains and bodies, then incorporate nature, quiet time, and quieting activities on their list or your family schedule. Younger children are usually more present-moment than adults, so mindfulness comes more naturally to them. As children get older, they develop more patience, self-entertainment skills, and can learn how to meditate and relax. For younger children, meditation is usually more of a stress-management technique than something they do to seek bliss, self-enlightenment, or spiritual growth. Those are all rather abstract concepts that maybe older children and teens might be thinking about.

Divine Grace – Miracle in the Sky It was the season of Autumn, the leaves were falling and I found myself reaching for warmer things to wear. In a couple of days, I was going to a show and I was searching to find something nice looking but also comfortable to wear.

Mom there was no answer. I repeated the calls several times and still no answer, this was troubling because she usually always answers her phone. It turned out to be a fateful day as my Mom had passed away at her home quite unexpectedly. I was deeply saddened and shocked and I found myself wanting to just give her one last call as most people grieving over the loss of a loved one would feel. Just if I could hear her speak to me one more time would have been of great comfort to me. I could feel my Mom’s spirit as I made sure with the help of my brothers and sister that we followed her wishes in every detail concerning the funeral. She had requested that at the cemetery, that all of her children, release 6 white balloons representing each of us after the service.

Keeping to my schedule was always a daunting task, but somehow I always seem to manage to pull it off day after day.

My brother signaled us to let go of the balloons we were holding, he started to speak aloud as all of us were staring at the balloons going towards 2 big trees, and then they got stuck, he attempted to explain maybe why they were appearing to just assemble close to the branches. Not one balloon busted, still staring, we watched the balloons suddenly break free from the trees and float forward to the sky.

Checking in with my Mom and letting her know about her Doctor’s appointment was just routine, she was doing okay but had some problems that come with being elderly, and can be expected. She fought many battles with her health but being a bit stubborn and having an iron clad will to live definitely was to her advantage.

What happened next is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. The balloons formed a cross in the sky, we all were breathless and people were speaking aloud describing the balloons as a cross and how beautiful it was. As if that was not enough, the balloons then formed in groups of 2, in a single line up in the sky.

The night of the show was great, I was with a group of friends that were just wonderful and it set the pace for the whole evening. I had called my Mom before I went out for the night and she was in good spirits, so it made me feel relaxed and happy. Driving home that night I was tired but was grateful to get out as I don’t have a lot of free time to go to many events with a hectic schedule.

222, being regarded as an angel number may be an affirmation for many things in ones life. To me and I am sure many others would agree, it brought a profound sense of peace and love for me that day. I will always hold the memory of that miraculous occurrence of the balloons close to my heart, as I know my Mom’s spirit was with us at the moment and now forever in our hearts.

Next morning was typical, except when I called my

Those who believe in the power of prayer will also know that praying has the ability to change things, maybe not the way we might imagine, but prayer can comfort and heal in many different ways.

It wasn’t until I donned a clerical collar that I came to understand how people viewed religious leaders differently. Some were comforted by my presence while others seemed ill at ease. “Before long I realized that many had been damaged through judgment, guilt, rejection, and condemnation by a religion or by someone religious. I’m happy to report that these people do not have to languish in fear, depression, or resentment. “In Every Path Leads Home, Wayne Holmes has created a brilliant and very gentle way out of religious abuse and intolerance into peace, happiness, and personal freedom. “It is a way to heal us all. –Rev. 10 Things to do Daily to Help Your Brain: Part II by Dr. Joeseph Mercola Even though your brain affects everything you do, you probably don’t give it — literally — much thought. Clever pun aside, how often do you actually consider what your brain may need to stay healthy? Given the fact your brain impacts all aspects of your life — from happiness and health, to relationships and rest — it’s important you understand how to take care of it. While aging and genes have some effect, they may not have the final word about the fate of your brain. Your brain’s lifelong neuroplasticity enables you to have continual influence over its health based on how you eat, sleep, exercise, express yourself, manage stress and more. The actions, attitudes and thoughts you have today, as well as the daily lifestyle choices you make, all play a meaningful role in your brain’s health. With more than 5 million Americans currently living with Alzheimer’s disease and as many as 16 million expected to suffer with it by 2050,1 brain care is not a subject you can afford to ignore. Start today by reviewing the following actions you can take daily to positively impact the health of your brain.2 6. Eat a Healthy Diet The following dietary recommendations are vital for maintaining brain health and staving off Alzheimer’s: • Eat real food, ideally organic. Be sure to choose organic grass fed meats and animal products. Research has shown vegetables to be particularly beneficial for slowing age-related cognitive decline due to the antioxidants they contain. Avoid processed foods of all kinds because they contain items known to be harmful to your brain, such as refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, glutinous grains, genetically engineered ingredients and pesticides.

not need carbohydrates and sugars for fuel. What it does need is healthy fats, such as saturated animal fats and animal-based omega-3s, which are far more important for optimal brain function. Avoid all trans fats and hydrogenated fats such as margarine and various butter-like spreads, as well as vegetable oils like canola and soybean oil. Healthy fats support your mitochondria, a topic addressed more thoroughly in my book “Fat for Fuel.” Healthy fats to add to your daily diet include: Animal-based omega-3s, such as those found in krill oil and small fatty fish like anchovies and sardines, Avocados, Butter made from raw, grass fed, organic milk, Coconuts and coconut oil, Ghee (clarified butter), Grass fed meats and pastured poultry, Olives and olive oil (Avoid cooking with olive oil. Use it cold.), Organic pastured egg yolks, Raw cacao butter, Raw dairy, Raw nuts, such as macadamias and pecans, Seeds like black sesame, cumin, hemp and pumpkin • Avoid gluten and casein. The main items to forgo in this category are wheat and pasteurized dairy, but not dairy fat such as butter. Research shows your blood-brain barrier is negatively affected by gluten. Gluten also makes your gut more permeable. This allows proteins to get into your bloodstream where they promote autoimmunity and inflammation, both of which play a role in the development of Alzheimer’s. • Optimize your gut flora. You can strengthen your gut microbiome not only by abstaining from processed foods, but also by avoiding antibacterial products, antibiotics and fluoridated water. You can fortify your gut by regularly eating cultured and fermented foods, or using a high-quality probiotic. My 2015 interview with Dr. David Perlmutter explores the compelling connection between your gut microbes and brain health, relating it to neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s. 7. Keep Your Mind Active

• Replace refined carbohydrates with healthy fats. Contrary to what most people think, your brain does

Keeping your mind active and mentally stimulated

has been shown to be an effective antidote for resisting cognitive decline, especially as you age. Challenging yourself with mental exercise is believed to activate processes in your brain that keep your brain cells alive, support the growth of new nerve cells and foster communication among your nerve cells. If you frequently watch TV and think of it as a form of mental stimulation, you need to know it is actually associated with mental decline.16 A few of the beneficial activities you can do — at any age — to keep your mind active include:17 Learn something new, such as a second language or musical instrument Play board games, cards or online games (choosing games that foster social connection will further boost your brain health) Read and write on a regular basis Solve crossword, number or other kinds of puzzles; assemble physical puzzles Take a class online or at your local library or community college 8. Eliminate Toxins You can help your brain by eliminating toxins that have been shown to negatively affect it (and the rest of your body). A few of the toxins you should avoid are: • Aluminum: Aluminum can cross your blood-brain barrier and has been directly linked to Alzheimer’s. Sources of aluminum include antiperspirants, nonstick cookware and vaccine adjuvants. Learn more about how to detox aluminum. • Dental amalgam fillings: Dental amalgam fillings, which are 50 percent mercury by weight, are a major source of heavy metal toxicity. If you have amalgams and are in reasonably good health, review my mercury

detox protocol and enlist the services of a biological dentist to remove them. • Flu vaccinations: No matter what you have been told about its effectiveness and importance, carefully consider the risks before getting the flu vaccine. Many flu vaccines contain both aluminum and mercury, which are considerably more damaging to your health than the illness itself. Studies have also repeatedly shown the flu vaccine rarely works. • Statins and anticholinergic drugs: Statin drugs are problematic because they suppress the synthesis of cholesterol and deplete your brain of coenzyme Q10, vitamin K2 and neurotransmitter precursors. Drugs that block acetylcholine, a nervous system neurotransmitter, have been shown to contribute to memory loss in some individuals.18,19 These drugs include certain antidepressants, antihistamines, bladder-control medications, narcotic pain relievers and sleep aids. • Microwave radiation from cellphones and other wireless technologies. Last year, Dr. Martin Pall published a scientific review20 showing how microwave radiation from cell phones, Wi-Fi routers and computers and tablets not in airplane mode is clearly associated with many neuropsychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer’s. Microwaves emitted from devices such as these increase intracellular calcium through voltage gated calcium channels (VGCCs), and one of the tissues with the highest density of VGCCs is your brain. Once these VGCCs are stimulated they trigger the release of neurotransmitters, neuroendocrine hormones and highly damaging reactive oxygen species, significantly raising your risk for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Based on this mechanism, it seems clear that chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can play a (Continued on pg. 28)

significant role in dementia and that as a society, we need to take this very seriously. On a personal level, be sure to limit your exposure to wireless technology. Simple measures include turning your Wi-Fi off at night, not carrying your cellphone on your body and not keeping portable phones, cellphones and other electric devices in your bedroom. 9. Meditate Meditation helps you take a deliberate break from the stream of thoughts constantly flowing in and out of your mind. Some people use it to promote spiritual growth or find inner peace, while others use it as a powerful relaxation and stress-reduction tool. A 2012 study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience asserts meditation can have a long-term effect on your mental state because it prompts changes in your amygdala, a region of your brain associated with processing emotion. The authors stated:21 “[Eight] weeks of training in … meditation yielded distinct changes in amygdala activation … This finding suggests that meditation training may affect emotional processing in everyday life, and not just during meditation. This is consistent with the hypothesis that … meditative states … can result in enduring changes in mental function.” Research from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine also supports the notion of meditation as a form of “mental exercise” that can help regulate your attention and emotions and improve your well-being.22 10. Be Optimistic A study published in Social, Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience23 suggests healthy adults who have a larger orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) tend to be more optimistic and have less anxiety. Your OFC is a region of your brain located in your prefrontal cortex just behind your eyes — it plays a key role in regulating your emotions and behavior through the integration of intellectual and emotional information.

28

Researchers believe the size of your OFC appears to predict your tendency toward either anxiety or optimism. According to Psychology Today,24 the study: “Shows that optimism may ultimately protect [you] from anxiety by stimulating changes in the OFC. It appears that [you] can create an upward spiral by altering the gray matter volume of the OFC. In future studies, [researchers] plan to test whether optimism can be increased and anxiety reduced by training people in tasks that engage the OFC, or by finding ways to boost optimism directly.” Lead researcher Florin Dolcos, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois, believes cultivating optimistic thoughts can have a lasting effect on your brain. He said, “If you can train people’s responses, the theory is that over longer periods, their ability to control their responses on a moment-by-moment basis will eventually be embedded in their brain structure.”25 Even One Change Can Make a Big Difference in Your Brain Health Dementia and Alzheimer’s have become so common that you may be unconsciously accepting these conditions as a natural part of aging, unfortunate family genes or both. The truth is, you can positively influence your brain. The actions I suggested above will help ensure your mind remains sharp and resilient for many years to come. I encourage you to choose one of the suggestions and begin acting on it today. Making just one change can make a big difference in your brain health. Take care of your brain and it will take care of you.
