“It is madness to spend millions of dollars on films that do not elevate the human condition, but contribute to further suffering. Each new film that is brought forth has the opportunity to contribute to an evolutionary leap for humankind, or it can further contribute to the decline of our civilization. Our films need to become guiding lights during this time of confusion.” This quote by Allegra Celeste Adams has really guided me these past years and I believe that this film is one of those guiding lights. Time of the Sixth Sun – Dreaming Ourselves Awake is an inspirational and uplifting documentary film about the shift in global consciousness and the emerging movement to find a new way to walk more lightly on this Earth. Our ancestors understood our symbiotic relationship to nature and the elements, and foresaw the collapse of an unsustainable world. Filmed predominantly in North America, Mexico, Peru, S.Africa, India, Egypt, Israel and Australia, this film is a synergy of ancient wisdom from the indigenous Elders, critical thinkers and pioneers of new energy consciousness, who collaboratively hold the vision of a new earth experience. The film is introduced by Greta Scacchi and narrated by ‘Tobias’, an angelic being who has lived many lifetimes on Earth, channeled by Geoffrey Hoppe. Our crew flew to Colorado and whilst Geoffrey was in a trance state, we asked Tobias if he would tell our story. He called it ‘the biggest evolution of consciousness humanity has ever experienced’. That was back in 2009, eleven years ago. “You are witnessing the dissolving of old systems and the birth of new energy consciousness. It is time to remember who you are and why you are here, at this time of the greatest change ever.” (Tobias)

Pacific Northwest – Cannon Beach After the Alaskan Cruise, Ray and I continued our Pacific Northwest vacation. We spent some time with relatives in Seattle along with my dad and childhood friends in Ellensburg, a town in central Washington, where I grew

up. We enjoyed both visits immensely. I also wanted to share a quaint beach town on the Oregon coast that is dear to my heart. My mother made Cannon Beach one of her favorite places for our family to gather. This would be my first time back since her passing five years ago. Cannon Beach is just 90 minutes west of Portland and fours hours southwest of Seattle. The drive from Ellensburg is about five hours. We planned on taking our time, since this was Rays first time in the region and the drive is gorgeous. As a kid, I biked down the old Highway 821 from Ellensburg to Yakima, Washington with a group of girls. It is a more scenic route then I-91, making this an easy choice. The route follows right along the Yakima River and is as stunning as I remember. It is narrow and winding, and you can often see rafters and kayakers on the river. We decided to have lunch in the cutest little town, Hood River. The city of Hood River is the seat of Hood River County, Oregon. It is a port on the

Columbia River, and named for the Hood River nearby. We stopped in to Stave and Stone Winery’s tasting room. Ray and I shared a wonderful tasting of their reds. My favorite wines are Oregon Pinot Noir’s, so the 2017 Broken Boulder Pinot was a treat. We sat outside and enjoyed an el fresco lunch at the Historic Hood River Hotel. The Broder Ost is a lovely restaurant that served traditional and lovingly crafted Scandinavian dishes. Ray had the Swedish Meatballs in a sherry cream sauce, with walnut levin toast, Lingonberry Jam, and of course, he added a potato pancake! I had the Gravalax Smorrebrod with house cured Gravlax, mustard sauce, Skagen shrimp salad and butter lettuce. Served openfaced on Danish Rye! Both dishes were outstanding. Before getting back on the road we decided to take a stroll through downtown, where the historic buildings add much charm. We enjoyed the boutiques, shops and galleries. We continued our drive to Cannon Beach with more beautiful scenery: The Columbia River Gorge, Multnomah Falls, the Cascade mountains, Mount Adams, Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens. We arrived in Cannon Beach late afternoon and checked in to Tolovana Inn. This is where we always stayed as a family. We rented a spacious ocean front suite with a cozy fireplace, which we totally used, as well as a private balcony steps away to the sand and iconic Haystack Rock. Later, we decided to go to the local grocer and seafood shop to pick up things for a great dinner in our room. We grabbed another bottle of Pinot and some clam chowder, fresh baked bread, cheese and grapes. It was a perfect balcony meal! We walked the beach after dinner, decided to build a bonfire and enjoyed looking at the stars before heading to dream land. Our plan was to spend three nights at the beach to truly relax. We made no plans, not even dinner reservations. We spent most of our time walking the beach, collecting sea shells, and watching the sunrises and sunsets. We spent an afternoon walking around town, enjoying all the colorful shops and shopkeepers. Of course, we had to visit a tasting room to sample more fabulous Oregon wines.

Infinity

Haystack Rock is one of Oregon’s most recognizable landmarks. It is home to tidepools and many species of bird life. The Rock itself rises 235 feet from the edge of shoreline. At low tide, you can walk right up to it and find sea stars and other fascinating tidepool creatures. This was one of Rays favorite things to do each day. On our last full day, we picked up a couple to-go sandwiches from Seasons Cafe and headed to Ecola State Park for the day. Ecola Park Road (in the north end of Cannon Beach) winds through old growth rainforest, before emerging at one of the Oregon Coast’s most famous views, overlooking numerous rock formations, capes and headlands, miles to the south. We took a short drive to the other side to find Indian Beach, a popular location for surfers. We walked on one of Ecola Point’s trail that led to views of Tillamook Rock Lighthouse. We found a picnic table and enjoyed our delicious lunch. We shared a tomato, basil and mozzarella sandwich and an amazing roasted turkey sandwich with avocado, cream cheese spread, on cinnamon swirl bread. Later that afternoon, we headed to the beach with lounge chairs to simply enjoy the sound of the waves, the warm sun, and the seagulls flying over head. Ray snoozed, and I read the book I dragged with me since the cruise. It was heaven! Our last night, we decide to have a nice dinner out at one of my family’s favorite restaurants, the Driftwood Restaurant and Lounge. We shared an appetizer of the Dungeness Crab cocktail and the steamed clams. Dinner consisted of Willapa Bay Oysters and the Northwest Seafood Stew. We enjoyed a bottle of Pete’s Mountain Winery “Haley’s Block” Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. A perfect ending to a perfect day! Back at the hotel, we started the fireplace, turned down the bed, and sat outside on our deck for one more look at the dark sky and to hear the sound of the crashing waves. This was certainly one of our most peaceful and relaxing getaways. The Zen moment:. All of it! (Continued on pg. 6)

We pray to our beloved Savior. His name may be Jesus, Buddha, or Mohammed. Religious people across the world seek “higher help” – assistance from a more evolved being, one who can control matter to a higher degree. Many people from temples, churches, and mosques to come together and seek divine assistance. From saviors, saints, angels, ascended masters to more evolved extraterrestrials, people reach out to receive help. I would love someone to touch me and have my sight improved, for example - what a gift. When we receive a gift, it is like spending money. Conversely, when we do the giving, we ignite the “sow what you reap” phenomenon in motion, like creating wealth in the bank. Whether we call it karma or “what goes around comes around”, what-we-give is who-we-are. Wouldn’t it be better to heal ourselves rather than ask for help from a beloved savior? Better yet, can we heal others? How much do we impact others by loving them? In the distant future, humanity may be more evolved. The future can seem far away, but many say that “All of time is happening at once”, even though we are only aware moment by moment. Can a young person connect with him or herself in the future? Can we ask for help from our future self? In our memory, we can reach back into our childhood, feel love now, and send it to the little child of yesteryear. Even if a change occurs only in our memory, we are improved today. We have better memories because we helped ourselves in the past. Our memories influence our decisions and feelings today. We elevate our perceptions and emotions right now. Our energies have upgraded. Why can’t our future self do the same thing? Perhaps we just have to ask. Most people learn lessons from life’s challenges. They transform from reckless optimism to stable cautiousness. Can we share these opposing yet balancing energies through youth and old age? People think about the significance of coincidences, not just attributing them to chance. When a twist of fate occurs, is

June / July 2020

someone orchestrating that? When we feel terrific about something or have a bad feeling – are we warned to avoid or seek something? Where did that message come from? Is there a savior, that is us in another level, dimension, or reality? Can this part of ourselves - the highest and the best version of ourselves, direct us in ways that we didn’t even know were possible for us? Can we actively seek the best in ourselves and receive this energy, advice, and support? I love working with saviors and have benefited tremendously from these experiences. I am respectful and grateful. They have “saved” me many times. I continue to honor and enjoy my Saviors. When I continuously help others, and I see them learning to help themselves, I feel uplifted and feel that my gift is worthwhile. When others keep coming back to me for more, I often feel used. Surely my Savior would prefer that I help myself and others rather than continually

praying for more gifts? When I honor the best in me, I honor my Savior. My Savior must feel beautiful when I learn the ways of my best self and help not only myself but those around me. Notes from a Conscious Filmmaker by Nikki Luna Williams, Producer/Director of Time of the Sixth Sun

“It is madness to spend millions of dollars on films that do not elevate the human condition, but contribute to further suffering. Each new film that is brought forth has the opportunity to contribute to an evolutionary leap for humankind, or it can further contribute to the decline of our civilization. Our films need to become guiding lights during this time of confusion.” This quote by Allegra Celeste Adams has really guided me these past years and Theo and myself believe that this film is one of those guiding lights. Time of the Sixth Sun – Dreaming Ourselves Awake is so much more than a movie and 8 part docuseries. It is a rapidly growing movement of an awakening tribe. Told through several levels of conscious awakening, we move through the stages from awakening, to change, shadow, purification, heart, dreaming, new earth, sovereignty and finally to ascension.

8

Shift your inner world experience to create a more harmonious external environment as we ‘dream ourselves awake’. The film is a synergy of indigenous ceremonies and powerful interviews to produce a multi-layered, multidimensional film with a depth and texture that draws the audience into a rich emotional experience. A sensory feast that is as impressive to the ear as it is on the eye. The ‘soundtrack’ seamlessly intertwines sacred songs, prayers and chants. But the true authenticity of the film though comes from the sacred transmissions of the Elders, visionaries and thought leaders of our time. I could begin by telling you about the process of making the film, but I have chosen to leave that to an article in this magazine later this year, which will coincide with a book I am currently writing about the process of making the film over 11 years in 16 countries. It

June / July 2020

is called “Filmmaking Guided by Spirit”, and guided I was. So instead, I’m going to write about what is present for many of us right now. In this time of sacred seclusion, right across the world we are seeing a divisiveness, extreme polarities in opinion and we are split. Brexit/EU, red/blue, black/white, left/ right, right/wrong, and on it goes. The media have played a large part in this drama, promoting ‘fear porn’ and transmitting political spin & lies by the majority of our politicians and world leaders. Facebook threads are spiralling off into heated conflict with the trolls and shills duelling away in this cerebral soap opera. I’m a great believer in our human right to freedom of speech, but even on our own FB page we have witnessed this playing out again and again, and it is a conundrum that at what point do you censor or delete a post or person, in order to keep harmony in the group. Lazy name calling and abuse are simply not tolerated, as we and the majority of our members genuinely want to elevate the conversation. What I am observing is this need for people to be right, and it seems that if anything comes along to challenge their rigid and deeply held beliefs, it is like the end of the world to them. I believe that fear levels are running so high amongst our world population right now, that everything is amplified and shaking the very ground our belief systems are based on and right now those foundations are being rocked and we are being shocked to our bones with this virus. As one of our elders recently said to me, if they could just step back and take two minutes to walk in another mans shoes and see what life looks like from their perspective, they’d find a shift in their perception and potentially a way to heal the wounds that shackle them. Our film is essentially about awakening. Waking the sleeping beauties of our world, and trusting that those that are meant to find their way to the movie, will do so. Episode Two of our “Lifting the Veil” docuseries is called “Healing our Ancestral Wounds”, and it has touched many of our viewers very deeply. When I returned from filming at a Gathering of Ancient Traditions in India back in February 2009, the one thing that I came away

Infinity

with was seeing the unity in the diversity of human beings, and what unifies us all beyond borders and culture, is that we all carry a deep wounding regardless of whether it was ancestral, through apartheid, the holocaust, or the stolen generations of Originee & First Nations children who were ripped from their families and placed into reformatory schools across America and Australia, where they were then abused by those they trusted to look after them. We all carry a profound wounding… and we need to heal it. According to Mac Macartney, also featuring in our docuseries, even the perpetrators of this damage, the (not so great) British Empire, was itself a victim of terrible abuse in 60AD in the final days of Boudeca, when so many of the ancient British tribes were slaughtered by their hundreds of thousands and wiped out, along with the mystical Druid tradition by the invading Roman army. We were traumatized as a nation, and later much like an abused child, we then exported that trauma all around the world, and meted it out to all corners of the earth, what had been done to us. So on behalf of my ancestors … I say to you; I’m sorry – Please forgive me – Thank you – I love you. I’M SORRY PLEASE FORGIVE ME THANK YOU I LOVE YOU Ho’Openo’Pono – translated means “to make right”. It is a process by which we can forgive others to whom we are connected, and when we become right with others, we become right with ourselves and self-forgiveness is key. It is time for us to take individual responsibility for the actions of our forefathers historically and the only way I see that we can do this effectively, is by forgiveness ceremonies, from the people to the people. It’s useless to expect ineffective leaders that we have voted in to do this on our behalf, because it has become crystal clear that their agendas do not have our best interests at heart. So we must do it for ourselves as a global collective of awakening ones.

(Continued on pg. 10)

(Continued from pg. 9)

You know people often write to us asking what they can do to help make a difference in this world, and in my humble opinion I would say this; Show up, think outside the box and create something that is so simple & so crazy that people will tell you you’re mad. Don’t listen to them. Act on it. Make that first step and never look back. There will be challenges of course, there always are when we are being outstanding and magnificent, but stand up like the Sovereign beings that we are, step up and make a difference for generations to come. Our children are our future grandmothers and grandfathers and they will inherit the earth when we are gone, so we owe it to them that we include them in all the decisions we now make on their behalf. A beautiful example of this comes from the amazing quintessential gentle man and Elder, Mac Macartney, who has written a book called The Children’s Fire which is based on an ancient Native American ceremony where the Chiefs would gather around a children’s fire and vow never to make any decisions for the tribe that would ever harm the children now, and for the next seven generations to come. So Mac took this ceremony out to giant corporations around the world where he then gathers the CEOs and Heads of Department, and he talks to them about this Native American teaching, and there are often tears. Many tears. Then finally, he invites them to sign The Children’s Fire pledge where they make a vow never to make decisions within the company that will harm either the children or the kids to come for another seven generations, and many companies have signed up to this extraordinary pledge. We’ve been calling for this change for many years now… you and I, and here it is. It’s time for us now to walk our talk and use the tools and skills that we have collected over our lifetime. We all hold a part of the puzzle. There is no longer time for procrastination and it’s time to step out of our comfort zones, and grow up to become the adult of our species. We know that this film is planting seeds and opening hearts all over the world and it is our vision that the film will go viral and awaken more and more souls. Brothers and sisters who have forgotten and the film serves as a ‘remembering’ for us all.

10

We want as many people in the world to watch the movie and docuseries online for FREE, where they can also purchase our amazing film package if they choose to. Go to: https://timeofthesixthsunlaunch.com – Please share the link with others and help us to get the film to go viral spiral around the globe. Just like a virus except in this case, instead of spreading a message of fear and anxiety, this movie spreads a message of love and compassion. Help us to make a difference. Thank you and Bless you. “Each of us individually has to walk our own spiritual path, and tend to our own inner consciousness in order to discover the truth and peace known to the true seers. ‘Time of the Sixth Sun’ shows us some of the sources from which we may find support and a genuine wealth, and nurturing of the inner spirit. It is a question of living correctly according to the natural laws that govern us all as human beings in a natural world. With the growing warnings from environmentalists, scientists and leaders who have genuine integrity, a race for sanity is now intensifying. This film prises open the closed doors of conservative spiritual ideas and shows us how to expand our human potential.” (Richard Beaumont – Founder & Editor - Kindred Spirit Magazine)

Artist of Life,

Drawing from Within by Patti Lightflower

“Comfort food” is a choice we make to nourish our soul but not often our body. Yet, why is it that so often the choices that are best for us are not what we reach for to fulfill that need, desire or urge to feel a sense of comfort? Such as choosing to nap when feeling lethargic rather than get up and move that body. Choosing sweets over something more nourishing is another. Being productive and creative is similar. Writers call it writer’s block. We re-re-organize our workspace and reprimand ourselves for not pushing harder to make something creative magically formulate itself from the tips of our fingers, even when the ideas are swirling at the top of our head. Like just about everything else in life, it’s when we surrender to the ‘what is’ and go with that, whatever it might be or wherever it might lead, we find ourselves opening and the creativity flows, again, and there is a feeling of one’s soul being restored. There is sweet comfort in surrendering to letting go of the pressures we place on ourselves and maybe are not consciously aware. Meanwhile, I’ve created a new workspace for my sewing projects where they can be available for play when the mood hits and time allows. My apron pieces, sketches, threads and needles await me. I hope you are working on your personal apron. Perhaps embroidering flowers or phrases on what will be a pocket. I’ll share my work in the next issue. Making a Hanko is a simple creative activity. It’s a personal signature stamp and you can use it to sign your project using fabric paint or ink. It is traditionally seen on artwork in red. A few weeks ago, we shared this image of a Hanko, an Enso and a Haiku. These are creative Japanese expressions. To make a Hanko, you can etch into a rubber eraser, found in art supply shops, then use an exacto knife or lino carving tool to cut out your design. I used a sun and a flower to represent my name.

Infinity

Hanko, Enso & Haiku All three of these are creative Japanese expressions. Can you find them in the artwork below?

Hanko: Personal signature stamp. Enso: A circle made in a continuous brush stroke and one breath. Haiku: Japanese verse of 3 lines. The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables and the third has 5.

About the Author: “I’ve always enjoyed working with textiles. As a child I watched my grandmother turn color cotton feed bags into play clothes. I designed and made dresses for my dolls from scraps of fabric and shoes for them from orange peels, which I pretended were leather. I attended art classes at the University of Cincinnati in the 70’s, and have studied with textile artists at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, along with many other professionals in their studios over the years. My long-time passion has been the study of hands and their owners, being creative and expressing my artistic side allows for manifesting something tangible whereas reading hands is more esoteric.” Patti Lightflower can be contacted at pattilightflower2@ gmail.com and more information can be found at her website: www.ireadhands.com

How Nature Saved my Sanity by Maureen Hollmeyer

Over the years, many people have asked me, “How did you turn out so normal?”

were, ‘Oh, boy!’ and it said that I started camping at the age of 6 months old!

This question always came after I revealed some of my childhood trauma and my answer was always the same, “I don’t know!”

Imagine that!

Well, during this Pandemic, I’ve had the time to figure it out and I’ve connected the dots all the way back to when I was an infant.

First of all, I think I had the ‘all knowing’ feeling that my life would be difficult while under the supervision of my parents. Why else would my first words be, “Oh, boy” and I used this phrase quite a bit growing up.

Yes, something as simple as having the luxury to be outdoors saved my sanity. Knowing what I do now, I can say that being outside in nature kept me grounded enough to survive.

I realized that I had been a traveling camper from Ohio to different states throughout the US for two weeks every year until I was the age of 16yrs old. We only stopped because we ran out of places to visit. Also, every weekend in the summer we went to a permanent camp site to escape the suburbs.

My baby book gave me a few clues: My first words

So why did I forget I grew up in nature?

Now I know what saved me: NATURE.

12

June / July 2020

Because, I disliked camping! Imagine, the one aspect of my life, something I disliked, actually saved my sanity over the first 16 years of my life. Now, I realize it wasn’t nature that I didn’t like, it was being trapped with the authoritarians day in and day out. And as an adult I did everything possible to avoid camping. Then once I became a travel agent, I became spoiled, because for a small penny I was able to live the life of luxury and travel in style! Let me remind you that during the 70’s the average family had a station wagon with no air conditioning! There was only hot air blowing into the car while driving through the desert and when it rained there was no air at all. There had been no glitz or glamour nor the option to eat out. However, camping allowed me some freedom to explore and bask in nature. There were the hayrides, bomb fires and country music in the old barns. I learned how to fish, clog hop (dance), canoe and jump off a swing set without breaking a leg. Also, camping allowed my parents free babysitting and a chance to have responsible drinking around the camp fire. I used to be the first person up in the morning to investigate the severity of the prior night. Usually, the fire still had steam coming off the coals from the morning mist and I would try to find the beer bottles in the fire pit that melted into ashtrays. I felt a certain power knowing this prior to the adults waking up and it gave me the opportunity to get a feel for the day ahead. Then there were fireworks on 4th of July and full days of swimming in the lake while feeling the muddy water under my feet and on shore the sand on my toes. There was a lot of running barefoot, hide and seek, scavenger hunts and outdoor movies while sitting on the grass. I know you are thinking, this sounds like an ideal childhood. On paper and upon observing from afar it does seem ideal. Although I’m not revealing all the turmoil that occurred inside of me, because all I knew was that I was riddled with fear of the authoritarians. I felt like I was walking on eggshells and all I wanted

Infinity

to do was run away. Luckily, I escaped in nature and I made friends with whoever I could in order to keep my anxiety company. Also, looking back, I can picture each home we lived in and how it helped me to stay grounded; from the Spanish style tiles that were cool on my feet, from the front lawns that I did summersaults downhill along with the sand box that felt like being on the ocean. Let’s not forget all the years of walking to and from the school bus stop including in the rain and snow. We made outdoor ice-skating rinks along with snowmen, we went sled riding and had snowball fights. The hikes in the woods where we always seemed to get lost and the sprinklers, pools, picnics and bike rides. I think about how the children of today don’t have this freedom and it saddens my heart. They don’t know what it’s like to be safe enough to walk alone even in their own neighborhood. Let alone being able to enjoy daily nature instead of electronics. Fortunately, after a lot of counseling and reading a lot of self-help books, I met my husband who has brought me back to my roots. Through his eyes I learned to appreciate every single breath I take outdoors and I’m forever grateful that he has helped me become grounded through nature. Together we enjoy the smell of the rain, thunderstorms, sunsets, the smell of the woods, the sound of the waves and the fresh air from the afternoon breeze. May you find peace within your heart through the beauty of nature.

Stress and Anxiety in Pets by Cindy Huff Animals can feel stress and anxiety just as we can. Many of us who live with pets are likely familiar with some of the more common types of stress and anxiety in pets – separation anxiety, fear of men or women, anxiety around children or other animals, or stress when riding in a car. For those of us in the United States, we as human beings are experiencing stress and anxiety on a national level as well as a personal level. We are living through a pandemic that has killed over 100,000 of us so far. In addition, there are nationwide protests against institutionalized racism. At some level, we may not feel safe. At some level we may also be dealing with grief. Some of us have lost someone to COVID-19 or have experienced racism personally. Suddenly, life is different for all of us. Our pets do not read or watch the news. They have no comprehension of what we humans are dealing with. All they know is that their humans are anxious and unsettled. They do not know why. We are their source of safety and security. When we are anxious and uncertain, they react at an instinctual level – they may feel as though their survival is at stake. This can result in a wide range of behavior changes from suddenly peeing or pooping in the house to constant whining or pacing, sudden separation anxiety, hiding, or clinging to their humans. From our perspective, we may see the behavior change and not realize why it is happening. We address the behavior, not the root cause of the behavior. What we need to do is stop and examine how we are feeling and understand that our pets may be reacting to the changes in us. If we can do that, then we can begin to address the real issue. If you experience a sudden behavior change with a pet, the first thing you need to do is ask yourself “what changed?” Has your schedule changed (ie

14

working from home, being out of work, working a different shift, etc)? Are you watching the news more, or spending more time on social media? Are friends and family not visiting due to COVID-19 restrictions? Are you worried that you will lose your job, or that someone close to you will? All of these things can impact us and indirectly, our pets. The first thing that you should do is contact your vet, especially if your pet is suddenly starting to have accidents in the house/not using the litterbox or begins hiding or acting scared. Make sure there is not a physical reason for the change. If there is no obvious physical issue, then the next thing to do is look at yourself and understand that their safety and wellbeing depends on you. Spend some time with them playing, cuddling, going for a walk – whatever you both enjoy. Sit with then and reassure them by talking with them, letting them know that they are safe, that you love them, and that you will be sure that they are ok. They will read your body language and the tone of your voice. Picture doing happy things with them, they will see the pictures in your head. Be patient with them. You will get through this together. WE will get through this together! Be safe and well.

Stone Ten: Harmonize by Wayne Holmes and also Revelation Spiritual Church. He is the co-founder of Religious Recovery, an organization dedicated to healing wounds inflicted by religion or the religious. He is not opposed to religion, but he sees the hurts and endeavors to help.

“I look for the harmony in all spiritual belief systems and seek to add my voice to the music of the Earth. I seek peace with myself and with all people. Religious institutions seem to splinter regularly and form new factions and even new religions. There seem to be branches of every religious system, and the reasons for the multitude of beliefs often seem irrelevant, at least to an observer. To propose we look for the harmony in religious organizations seems quixotic in nature. How in the world can we persuade all these religions to get along?

Wayne is the author of seven books including the title, Every Path Leads Home: Opening to Your Spiritual Journey. Learn more about Wayne’s healing work at ReligiousRecovery.org.

Wayne Holmes’ Set Your Course shares six months of reflections that will give readers a path to spiritual freedom and help them connect to their soul and inner spirit. Not only does it provide healing from past religious abuse, but also abuse of nearly any form, and beyond that, it provides a path towards taking solid control of one’s religious and spiritual journey.

The only hope of finding harmony seems to be through recognizing the things we have in common, not the things that tear us apart and cause us to fight with one another. Each religion has — or hopefully had at one time — a basis in spirituality. There seems to be some charlatans who appear to be involved for the money, power, influence, and fame. They have their reward, and perhaps some of their followers find some benefit in their teaching, but without spirituality as the basis of their faith, their power, money, influence, and fame will die with them — and in some drastic cases, their followers might literally die with them, too. It wasn’t until I donned a clerical collar that I came to understand how people viewed religious leaders differently. Some were comforted by my presence while others seemed ill at ease. “Before long I realized that many had been damaged through judgment, guilt, rejection, and condemnation by a religion or by someone religious. I’m happy to report that these people do not have to languish in fear, depression, or resentment. “In Every Path Leads Home, Wayne Holmes has created a brilliant and very gentle way out of religious abuse and intolerance into peace, happiness, and personal freedom. “It is a way to heal us all. –Rev. Mr. Holmes’ words resonate way beyond the printed page—they vibrate within your heart as truth. I absolutely LOVE this book! It is the best bridge I have seen joining traditional religion, spirituality, and the spiritual nature of us all. “The integrity of the author in revealing his own story is authentic, reminding me of the humanness of all of our experiences. I felt wrapped in the arms of loving kindness throughout the whole book. I predict this book will enlighten all who read it.

Wayne Holmes’ Every Path Leads Home is a beautiful book of acceptance. Our lives on this plane of existence are of short duration, and we are all “headed home. Different faith experiences define “home differently, and each suggests a path or paths. For anyone who has been abused by the supposed rules and strictures of a church or congregation or pastor, for anyone who has come to see religion not as a faith experience but rather as a set of ironclad rules, for anyone who has grown weary of the struggle to find God by whatever name: Every Path Leads Home is a must-read.

Every Path Leads Home:

Religious Recovery not only hopes to heal individuals from their hurts, but whenever possible we hope to give people the tools they need to discern what religious institutions will work best for the path they are on. We don’t accomplish this by judging religions, but we hope our words and thoughts can help people discern what path works for them and which ones do not, which ones will help them connect with The Divine and which ones will not. We encourage each person to look for the harmony within each path.

Blooming Where Planted Baker Chiropractic Testimonial by Cynthia M. Brown

OK. Summer is finally here. I am glad it has warmed up a bit but I must say I loved the long cool spring especially since I was quarantined. I spent a lot of time outside and now have created a lot of work for myself for the rest of the year. There are vegetable and herb gardens to tend, shade gardens to manage. It is really fine though. It has made me spend a lot of time thinking about what I used to spend my time doing… you know before the COVID 19 pandemic. I have been lucky. I did not lose my job. I still worked 48 to 50 hours a week. So, my quarantine was about the rest of my time...going to movies, dining out, shopping….I spent all my extra time doing stuff AWAY from home. Now, I really don’t want to leave and go do other stuff. I have made progress on projects in my house that need tending to. I have begun to tame the edges of my property and to create beautiful spaces I want to be in. I have even enrolled in graduate school to complete my Masters. Before the pandemic I never had time for any of these things. I know that our entire culture is predicated on consumerism. I know if I do not engage in some of those activities many businesses will not re-open. I have family in the restaurant business who need their jobs and need for people to dine out. So it is a hard place I have come to now. I am finding that I really enjoy tending my own garden as Epicurious tells us. I find great satisfaction in how peaceful my backyard can be. I want to stay focused on my own little domain and making my home the center of my life instead of my forever motel. I guess the rest of this year, as well hold our collective breaths and wait to see what the next virus cycle brings, I will be figuring out how to create a balance between my former frenetic time filling and celebrating the possibilities of home and creating a peaceful, beautiful space where I am… a space that brings peace and joy… a space that feels safe and freeing. So, as summer unfolds and my gardens bloom and do their amazing work of feeding my soul and my family, I will do that work of creating that balance between the two. Here’s to a summer filled with beauty and the promise of abundance.

Over 10 Years of Chronic Migraines Resolved with Corrective Chiropractic Care

Dr. Patrick Baker and Patrick Donnellan In my line of business, validation of results means everything before calling something a success. In the case of my treatment at Baker Chiropractic and Wellness, I have made significant enough progress where I can declare success! I have been affected by migraine type headaches and separately with lower back issues for over 10 years. I learned to “deal” with both but each had gotten progressively worse to the point that it was time to seek help in resolving the problem. The chronic migraines have been my clear focus since I was getting them 3 or even 4 times a week and they could get to levels bad enough that I could not function well. I used to think my headaches were sinus related since I used to feel pain and pressure in my ear and sinus cavities of my cheek and around the eyes. I used to take a LOT of pseudoephedrine and either ibuprofen or acetaminophen. My first visit with at Baker Chiropractic and Wellness demonstrated to me that the cause was a subluxation that caused my muscles to tighten through my shoulders and neck, further affecting the other nerves. My first adjustment and treatment with Dr. Paul Baker provided near immediate relief and showed me the real cause of my pain. Since that first visit 1-1/2 years ago Dr. Pat Baker

has gotten me to the point where a headache is a rare event for me and we can now concentrate on completely treating them for this cause. The other issue of my lower back pain from old injuries has been getting better and as long as I don’t do anything to reinjure it, I am expecting it too, to be decreased.

effects from electrotherapy and deep tissue massages have been very instrumental with the chiropractic treatments to get me to a higher functioning condition where I am now. I am very glad I made the decision to come to Baker Chiropractic and Wellness and I feel like I am well on my way to correcting past injuries and treating my chronic migraines and painful conditions.*

I really like receiving treatment at Baker Chiropractic and Wellness. The whole staff makes you feel like part of a family and not just a patient. The Baker Chiropractic program treats the whole person and not just chiropractic treatment. It really helps a patient to understand everything that affects the health and wellness of our bodies.

TGround he Stepping Stones and Fertile in our Weeds by Leslie Cayce

“If each and every disappointment, each and every condition that arises, is used as a stepping-stone for better things and looking for it and expecting it, then there will still be continued the optimism.” - Edgar Cayce reading 462-10 This central tenet in many spiritual traditions is also familiar to students of the Cayce readings. Yet it calls to be examined with new eyes just now when most of the world is … in quarantine!! Weeks into the new experience of this ever-changing big picture, most of us are grappling with unimaginable upheaval. The term Earth Changes suddenly has new relevance. The ‘solid ground’ we so recently took for granted is now shaking. Within this reading’s challenge to see ‘… each and every disappointment and each and every condition that arises as potential stepping stones,’ there is fertile ground for spiritual growth right here and now. How

20

we react during these hard, scary, stressful times is key. Our daily reactions are one thing; how we deal with that nitty-gritty is an essence of spiritual growth. Here in the weeds of our messy emotions and reactions – with ‘each and every condition that arises’ - is fertile ground for profound soul development. Typically, it’s easy to shy away from our own nittygritty. It’s uncomfortable. We want to avoid it and it’s easy to. A myriad of distractions and obligations beckons. But in this peculiar abnormal time, it’s not as easy to avoid facing our reactions. Here at home, we are pushed to witness our personal nitty-gritty whether we want to or not. And thank you for that, Universe! Because most of us ARE members are interested in spiritual growth and here, right in our faces, perhaps more than ever, is a unique opportunity for it. Studying spiritual texts is one path; meditation and prayer is another; there are

June / July 2020

many. Attending to our reactions, to let them go, is another crucial path toward soul development.

we inevitably falter or lash out, how do we deal with that? Taking stock…

Right now, most of us, across the globe, are at home. That fact is rich with (hopefully positive) potential. Lessons abound here. What are they? How are we actually doing day by day, moment by moment with this scrambled time?

The nitty gritty of our detailed observations creates the space needed for positive choices and changes, for stumbling blocks to become stepping stones.

Quarantine invites us to open our eyes wider. Imagine the global changes that could be triggered if many people paid attention to just this. With no one venturing out for necessities nor safe from threats to our most basic security, the world’s population is suddenly subject to drastic fast-paced changes and fears. We may be physically separated but we are all vulnerable to huge, unprecedented challenges.

Quarantined at home, choices are key. They are one thing we can control. We may choose to step away from being stressed and to step instead toward observing our reactions to stress. These unique circumstances of fewer distractions and increased challenges make it harder to avoid our own selves. Thank you, Universe! Let’s say yes to the invitation to tread this unwieldy spiritual path of honest selfobservation. Let’s choose to use this unprecedented quarantine as a needed push (one we may even have longed for) to step toward soul growth by creating some distance from our own reactions.

As our basic needs are shaken, how stressed, fearful, anxious are we? What about others – are we reaching out? Transforming these challenges (stumbling blocks) into spiritual growth (stepping stones) starts with such observations. Taking an initial step of paying more attention to our reactions, we may find that difficult moments also offer different responses than usual. With more time now to observe and contemplate, we may start to choose those.

As we choose in this manner, the fertile ground where stumbling blocks turn into stepping stones is revealed. At this precise moment in time, opportunities to accelerate our soul development open up as never before.

Quiet moments within these quieter days invite us to take stock. Here at home, how are we with this scrambled time? How’s our relationship to money? Spending less time at a computer? Or more? Picking up neglected projects or friends? Simplifying our stuff? Feeling increased restlessness or anxiety or calm within the storm? How are our relationships impacted? Taking stock …

- Edgar Cayce reading 462-10

Noting our feelings and reactions – looking within - is the spiritual instruction of the most spiritual traditions, including the Cayce readings. Now, as circumstances push us to reevaluate major swaths of life, this instruction looms large. Within our stew of emotions, this ‘range of each and every condition,’ are we kind and gentle with ourselves and others? And as

Lbeet More Your “New Normal” Empowering &

Transformative than Ever by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE

It’s a guarantee that this summer will be one to remember. Nothing like last summer and not even like the past few months. Have you given yourself credit for all you’ve done? It might seem like you’ve “done” very little, being on lockdown, but you have! First, you went on lock-down, with little notice and almost no preparation. You quickly adjusted to an income change and either working from home, being laid off, or risking your life to go into work. You also either had children home all day, have been missing your grandchildren, or have been isolated and alone, with maybe only a pet for company.

done your best. The prolonged restrictiveness is wearing on you, you are itching to see your family and friends, and give them hugs again. So, while you want to cheer, “Yay” Summer is here!” you wonder what the “new normal” will look like and manage any anxiety your imagination and thoughts create. Where you can go and what you can do when you get there has changed. Since rules are in constant flux, you must be in a constant state of readiness to adjust, flex, and try to go with the flow --- but little feels like “flow” these days. Dealing with constant change and re-entering a not-totally-safe world is stressful! Children may not understand double standards. What you thought this “new normal” would look like in your area is different than what you see when you venture out.

As you learned new rules called social distancing, you might have ventured out a few times, and likely also learned how to video chat, order groceries online, and have a restaurant deliver a meal to your door.

So you need to be ready to assess and re-assess in each situation what to do, where to go, what to wear, who to get close to, and what to do if you get there and others aren’t doing what you think is safest!

Parents have had extra challenges, helping children understand why they had to follow these strange new rules, and deal with their heartbreak and breakdowns over not seeing their friends and extended family. They’ve had to become their children’s teacher, therapist if they have special needs children, and that’s all on top of trying to work from home with their children present. Now it’s summer break, they might be able to go back to work, but children are out of school and childcare options are scarce.

By now, you probably are familiar with how to find the latest guidelines and tips for staying safe and social distancing. Those are external things you can do to stay safe and healthy. But what about internally? What can you do, within yourself, to stay healthy, positive, and in flow?

But it’s not all bad, right? Maybe you’ve found some silver linings to the lockdown, like spending more time as a family, having more time for yourself or creative ventures, time to get some projects done, or learning a new skill. So, give yourself credit for all you’ve done and learned and become! While you might not have ironed out every wrinkle, because things change every week it seems, you have

22

First, put your judgment of others in check, accept what is, and quickly move to thinking of alternative solutions and plans. This can help prevent any selfimposed stress and worrying. Next, practice gratitude daily, every morning and night, maybe even every hour! Gratitude has been shown in scientific studies to cause the body to release endorphins, which relax you. You also get oxytocin, that wonderful hormone that usually only nursing mothers get, that put them in that Zen calm state. These nourishing biochemicals boost your immune system, where worry and stress can compromise it.

June / July 2020

Lastly, keep reaching out to people however you can and that feels safe. Feeling connected and having support is the number one factor in being resilient, which is your ability to stretch without breaking and/ or bounce back from during challenging times. Other protective factors are Faith, family, fun, rest, and other forms of self-care, and channeling any stress into productive activity. So get in the flow and consciously pay attention to what you are thinking, saying, and doing, so you can stay in the flow, even when plans and rules change suddenly. Then you’ll be ready to see what’s right, good and positive in every situation, even if you are leaving it to stay safe. Together, we can create a safe and healthy “new normal” by focusing on all the positive blessings we already have and those we can cultivate safely. Have a great summer!

Be the Bliss

by Cynthia White Flower

The summer bliss of the season gives us the opportunity to empower and transform our lives. We can let the warm rays of the summer sun sustain us and fill our souls with healing light. The ecstasy of summer is generated from our sun. It bestows gifts of empowerment and transformation as it radiates energy, transmits light, which is intelligence, and resonates at a high frequency of consciousness. Summer blesses us with the opportunity to receive empowerment just by exposing ourselves to the sun. We don’t have to consciously do anything to receive these gifts. We only have to open ourselves to the sun’s magnificence and we are given these blessings freely! We become automatically transformed. The sun stimulates a conscious reminder of our energetic progress. Its magnitude provides our greatest external energy source from Nature. Light excites electrons. Light enters our body through our eyes, our skin, our being. It provides an energetic assertion into our world, our bodies, our emotions, our mental wellbeing.

24

We are left in a place of peace and joy. Have we been programed to avoid one of our greatest gifts? Everything in moderation. It is our job to hold the light through this world desolation, as the sun holds the light for us. As we expose ourselves to the sun, we feel energized, rejuvenated, regenerated and renewed. We feel revitalized and as if we can accomplish anything! We are invigorated, as we take in the rays of the sun. In the sunlight, we become empowered. We are reminded that we can consciously take ourselves to higher levels of energy and transformation as the sun provides this for us through exposure. The sun shows us that we are the microcosm of its macrocosm, aspiring to our magnificence. To consciously take the opportunity to empower ourselves is to help the summer sun to do its job. It is reawakening our greatness! To resonate energetically as high as we possibly can is to raise all that is within us. The freshness and purity of life energizes us.

June / July 2020

We can approach this from “the four lower bodies” standpoint. Our physical body demands purity: clean water, pure and lighter foods, fresh air, movement for our muscles to remain healthy, all of which energizes us. Our mental body needs clarity and peace. The divine breath is our gift. Breathing in the sunlight can help: exhaling a thought or worry and replacing that space with inhaling of the sunlight through our mind’s eye will make a difference. As we work with nature at its height, becoming the light happens simultaneously. Light is intelligence transmuted through electrons. Our lives are charged with the patterns of our individual lifestreams as a result of our control of the electrons through our thoughts. What do you want to see in your life? Change your thoughts. We will notice that we are becoming more enlightened as we will begin to understand the “why” of any given situation. As we become more peaceful, we see more clearly. This is a transformation into higher consciousness. Our emotional body asks for forgiveness and peace. Daily say, “I forgive me.” As we take responsibility for where we are, we begin to let go. We don’t even need a reason why. It becomes automatic like the sun. Music moves our emotions into magical and transforming places within. To open that door is to alter our vibrations as we consciously choose music that soothes us. Peaceful emotions takes us to a place of compassion and understanding. Our spiritual body calls out for our oneness with the Divine. Positive thinking, affirmations, prayer and meditation brings us peace and divine assistance. Inviting people and resources into our lives who resonate at the frequencies that we aspire to is beneficial. Your level of consciousness is where you resonate, where you live, what you draw and what you understand. See the sun glow? That divine spark lives in your heart. See a ray of the sun entering your heart and expanding that flame to encompass your heart, body, room, house, town, planet, world. Be the light. As we raise our vibrations, replacing darkness with light, we become a part of the solution. We open the doors for our soul to expand and to be an asset to us and our the world. We can choose to do it consciously or unconsciously by sitting in the sunlight. Whatever

Store Bought Vegetables

& Herbs to Regrow at Home by Dr. Joeseph Mercola

Gardening is a healthy outdoor activity that reaps more rewards than just the food you grow for yourself. One study1 by Dutch researchers found gardening produced a reduction in cortisol levels significantly stronger than those who did not garden after a stressful experience. Cortisol is excreted when your body is under stress; chronically high levels have been linked to obesity,2 cognitive ability3 and heart disease.4 Working in the garden is another way to help achieve 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity exercise every week.5 However, unlike biking or walking on a treadmill, gardening produces edible results. One study6,7 found those who regularly enjoyed formal exercise and were physically active, including gardening, experienced a 30% reduction in risk of death from all causes. Gardening helps improve hand strength and dexterity. One study8 following 3,000 older adults found the incidence of dementia was reduced in those who enjoyed daily gardening. Gardening boosts your mood9 and offers a productive way of getting sensible sun exposure and boosting your levels of vitamin D. If you’re ready to get started planting a unique and wholesome edible garden, you may not need to run to the garden store for starter plants or grow your garden from seed. Starting with non-GMO, organically grown produce may only require a quick stop at the grocery store to get just what you need to fill your garden with fresh vegetables and herbs to last you all summer long. Ginger is a set-and-forget-it type of plant Ginger might be the least difficult plant to grow at home. You can plant it in the ground or in a pot depending upon your location and temperatures, and you’ll easily get enough to plant for the following season and eat through the year.10 The ginger foliage is a single stem with long slender green leaves. The part you eat are really rhizomes, although they are commonly called ginger root.11 Amend the soil with plenty of compost.12 Ginger loves filtered sunlight, warm weather and rich moist

26

soil since it’s a tropical plant. Temperatures lower than 50 degrees Fahrenheit may trigger dormancy in the plant and even lower may kill it.13 Keep your ginger away from frost, direct sunlight and strong winds. Although your plant enjoys moist soil, they do not like soggy or waterlogged soil.14 Get a large ginger root from the grocery store 2 inches wide and 2 inches long.15 You may have better results if you soak your ginger overnight as it may have been treated with growth retardant.16 Split it in half and place it in the soil about 1 inch deep. Within a couple of weeks you’ll start to see the foliage appear from the ground.17 Ginger root is used as a seasoning or may be sliced and boiled in tea. The antibacterial power in ginger may help reduce your risk of periodontal disease.18 and ginger tea is commonly used to calm nausea during pregnancy or chemotherapy.19 Ginger also has anti-inflammatory properties and has been used to reduce swelling and pain in those with arthritis, either orally20 or as a compress over the area.21 Ginger may help improve blood sugar22 and lower LDL cholesterol levels.23 Loaded with antioxidants, ginger may help normalize blood pressure, reduce your risk of heart disease24 and promote healthy aging.25 Add spice to your garden with garlic Garlic loves a sunny location in free-draining, fertile soil. Amend your soil by adding plenty of compost or organic matter a few months before planting. Garlic is best planted in the fall months in a sunny location so the cloves can put down roots before the ground freezes.26 Use a large head of garlic from the grocery store and break it into cloves. Only use the large cloves for planting.27 Put them about an inch deep and 6 inches apart leaving about a foot between each row.28 If you live in a cold area, you’ll want to plant the cloves in trays and keep them under cover until spring. Don’t worry if you see some green shoots in the fall as this does not harm the plant.29 If you’d like to plant in containers, be sure the container is at least 8 inches wide and plant the cloves

so there’s 4 to 6 inches distance in each direction.30 Your garlic needs a little attention until it’s time to harvest. Keep the area weeded and add organic mulch occasionally. This also helps to retain moisture and keep the soil cool. If the weather is dry, you’ll also need to water.31 Determining the time to harvest might be the trickiest part about growing garlic since if you harvest too soon the immature cloves maybe usable but not as big. However, if you wait too long, the cloves begin to dry and separate.32 Harvest often occurs when the leaves begin to turn brown in mid-July to early August. Dig up the bulbs but be careful not to bruise them. They can be tied, with the leaves braided or the stems maybe cut just a few inches above the bulb. Hang the braided garlic or store the loose bulbs on screens to allow for drying.33 For centuries, people have used garlic for the flavor and health benefits. In test tubes, it appears to kill cancer cells34 and may help to boost immunity.35 Garlic is a natural anti-inflammatory36 and although the verdict is out on cholesterol, research has found a positive effect on your arteries and blood pressure.37 The antioxidant and antifungal properties may help fight athlete’s foot.38 Grow your carrots for more than just the roots Carrots are another vegetable you can regrow from the produce you purchase at the grocery store. Use non-GMO organically grown carrots and begin by cutting off the end, leaving approximately 1 to 2 inches where the greens had been cut from the plant, the thick end the carrot.39 The ends of the carrots may then be planted in welldraining soil with the cut end down. Leave the top of the carrot exposed to air and water the soil. In approximately one week the carrot will start to grow leaves.40 The plant will not grow another root carrot but will produce plentiful leaves that are tasty and a good addition to your salad. Carrot greens may also be added to a number of dishes including curried frittatas, roasted vegetable broth41 or a chickpea and carrot top salad.42 Organic Facts43 includes vitamin A, calcium, iron, fiber and vitamin C in the nutritional content of carrot greens. These nutrients contribute to your immune system, kidney function, digestion and bone density.

Grow and regrow lettuce all summer Once you’ve cut off the ends of your romaine lettuce, you may just toss it in your compost pile or the garbage. But, did you know you can regrow lettuce at home? Lettuce begins growing more easily when started in water but once the roots take form, the plant will perform better when planted in soil.44 Cut off the end of your romaine lettuce leaving approximately 1 to 2 inches of lettuce. Place the bottom end into about 1/2 inch of water. Most importantly, change out the water every day. Usually within a week you’ll notice the leaves growing.45 You’ll want to transplant this into the soil after roots have developed. Although you can leave them in water, the plants usually never reach full size. Make a hole in well-composted, well-draining soil and plant the lower ends and roots, leaving the leaves exposed. Lettuce grows well in a container46 and may be grown indoors when given plenty of sun.47 You can start harvesting the outside leaves as they get larger, leaving the inside leaves to grow bigger. Lettuce is low in calories and high in vitamin A, C, K and potassium. Like all leafy green vegetables, it provides multiple health benefits.48 Herbs grow well in containers, inside and outside Starting herbs from your grocery store is simple and easy. Some take a little longer to take root and grow but all can be grown in containers outside in your garden or indoors near a window. All herbs require soil with good drainage and most grow well in typical garden soil.49 Rosemary is a woody plant50 that prefers slightly gritty soil and good drainage as it is prone to root rot. Your herbs will do best in six hours of direct sunlight each day.51 A south to southwest facing window works well. If you don’t have an available window sill for your herbs, you may need to use a grow light for the additional lighting.52 While outdoor temperatures in spring and fall can get tricky, most herbs do well in indoor temperatures, (Continued on pg. 28)

between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Herbs will tolerate it if indoor temperatures dip to 60 degrees at night. Just keep the foliage from touching the glass to protect it from cooler temperatures.53 Use these simple strategies to start your herbs at home:54 •Oregano — Before adding to water, take off all leaves except two to three sets at the top of the stem. Cut the stem at a 45-degree angle with sharp, clean scissors and place the stem in water. Oregano takes about four weeks to develop roots before you can plant in a container.55 Fresh oregano has antibacterial phytonutrients and is loaded with antioxidants. The leaves are a good source of vitamin K, E, tryptophan and calcium. Consider drying the leaves to extend use. However, they must be stored in a dry, glass container; they will lose flavor and health benefits at around six months.56 •Rosemary — Choose a green-colored rosemary stem and strip off the lower leaves. Place the stem in water next to a window in full sun. The plant may even begin growing new leaves as it’s rooting. Once a good root system has developed, plant it in well-drained soil.57 Rosemary plants live about two years.58 The plant has health benefits associated with improved concentration59 and digestion.60 However, too much of a good thing is not better. Purposefully taking high doses may trigger pulmonary edema, vomiting and coma.61 •Mint — To start mint, strip off the bottom leaves from a tender young shoot of mint that has not developed flowers or seeds, and place it in water. Once rooted, plant in a container or raised bed as mint grows like a weed,62 sending seeds and root rhizomes. It can quickly become invasive.63 Mint contains menthol, which works as a natural decongestant64 helping you to expel mucus more easily. The cooling effect may be soothing to a sore throat. One study65 found peppermint water may help nipple cracks and pain in breastfeeding mothers. Mint is likely best known for the calming effect on indigestion and upset stomachs and is a common remedy for intestinal gas.66 •Basil — Strip the bottom leaves from a stem that has not become woody. Place the cutting in water. If

28

your water is heavily chlorinated, use filtered water. The plant will begin to grow roots after two weeks. Transfer this plant to a pot of well-draining soil to your garden or window sill.67 Basil is an excellent source of vitamin K and contains a unique combination of flavonoids that offer protection against cellular damage.68 The leaves also have antibacterial properties and may have antiaging effects.69 •Sage — After removing the lower leaves, cut the stem at a 45-degree angle and place in water. The sage plant may take up to a month to grow roots before you can plant it in a container.70 Sage has traditionally been used for pain relief and antibacterial properties. In one review,71 researchers found sage had a positive effect on memory and cognition, sage tea could improve lipid profile and may be as effective as Metformin to reduce liver glucose production in people suffering from diabetes, exerting a hypoglycemic effect lowering blood sugar. Additionally, application of sage extract showed positive effects in easing menopausal hot flashes.72 •Thyme — Choose a green stem of thyme to root. Take off the lower leaves and cut the end at a 45degree angle, being sure to remove all the brown areas of the stem. Once the plant has developed roots, plant it in your container.73 As noted by Medical News Today, thyme has a distinctive phytonutrient profile that may offer antibacterial, antifungal and insecticidal properties.74 Thyme has been effective against several garden pests including ants, spiders, ticks, mosquitoes and grasshoppers.75 Researchers have found thyme showed strong activity against clinical strains and good results against antibiotic resistant strains of Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Escherichia and Pseudomonas genera.76
