Introducing Fresh Table Serving the Community with Dedication and Commitment
In Cincinnati there are a myriad of charitable giving opportunities. Many of them depend on the talent and generosity of the areas local chefs and restaurant owners. There is Seven Nights for SIDS to benefit research on this tragic disease. One Night, Twelve Kitchens benefits the scholarship fund at Midwest Culinary Institute. Eat Local for the Globe and Lunch on the Land benefit the historic preservation fund for Findlay Market. A taste of Duvenek benefits the Cincinnati Art Museum. The list is seemingly endless and all are possible because the chefs who cook for these events donate their time and in many cases, the products and supplies as well. One small business making a big impact on the local food scene is Fresh table at Findlay Market. Established in October of 2010, Fresh Table “believes in preparing the freshest readyto-eat offerings with eclectic menu choices that are not only sustainable but sourced locally and organically whenever possible.” To that end, they shop within the market and from local farmers and urban growers from Findlay Market Farms. Fresh Table sources over $55,000.00 in local food products annually. Their commitment doesn’t end with supporting local small businesses and local agriculture. Since opening last year, partners, Meredith Trombly, Louis Snowden and Victor Brown have donated over $20,000.00 in goods and services to local charitable causes. They have supported events to benefit the Cincinnati park Board, The Findlay Market preservation Fund, Midwest Culinary Institute, the Civic Garden Center and Art Works among others. They also have made a commitment to give back to the community by providing job opportunities for people interested in the culinary profession. They partner with the FreeStore Food Bank’s Cincinnati Cooks program by hiring its graduates. So this holiday season as you plan your gatherings and special dinners, explore your options. Support the local restaurants, food stores and chefs who give so tirelessly in the community. They have made a strong commitment to you, their customers and to this community. Celebrate the season and celebrate them as well.
Service as a Spiritual Path by Victor Paruta I recently went to a restaurant alone for a late dinner. I entered, sat at the bar and waited. The bartender was nowhere to be found. Two waitresses were folding silverware into napkins at the bar. Though I sat only 3 barstools away, I was not acknowledged. After a few minutes I walked over and asked for service. It was begrudgingly provided. Throughout my time there I felt like an unwanted guest. The experience left me with an icy feeling. I felt unappreciated and invisible.
After thinking about my contrasting experiences I realized that high service is automatically provided when one cares. Caring brings Light into your aura which flows into the people and situations you care about. This Light is actually Divine Love.
A couple days later I went for a haircut from someone I had not been to before. When I arrived I was warmly greeted, offered a drink, and listened to attentively. The stylist spent unhurried and focused time with me, providing a level of service far beyond what I expected. It left me feeling warm and appreciated. Afterwards, I told many people about my wonderful experience there.
This is why the path of service is a spiritual path. It infuses you and everyone around you with Light. As with most things spiritual, this law is incredibly simple. Start with the people and situations that are already in your life and recognize opportunities for selfless service when they arise. When you notice blocks to caring, move past them. Eventually these blocks will dissolve. To serve is to be a vehicle for God’s light and love into you and into the world.
When a simple everyday experience touches you deeply and leaves an imprint, whether pleasant or unpleasant, it is a learning opportunity which can lead to insight. When that experience is juxtaposed with a contrasting experience, the lessons learned can be even more illuminating. Thinking about these experiences, I remembered that service was one of the four paths of awareness in the Hindu tradition. The Indian mystic and guru Sai Baba, who died last April at the age of 84, said that “service to man is service to God.” Service is “Love made manifest.” To care only for our own interests and those of our families is a constriction of our heart which results in loneliness and unhappiness, the malady of the present age. The cure is service to others. The first thought in true service is what can I do, not what can I get. By giving, not through greed of receiving something in return, but through right action of service, the giver gains in return. Service broadens one’s heart, bringing with it an unexpected feeling of happiness, and it begins to transform the community around us as well. Through giving, we receive.
4
Not caring is the absence of Light. Not caring stops the flow of Light. There is nothing to receive and so one is left feeling cold and empty.

Keys to Intuitive Development by Kathy Vaske Learn to meditate. It clears the mind, so spirit can get through. It’s hard to pick up what spirit is trying to tell you, when your mind is cluttered with everyday thoughts. Finding something to focus on, helps you to feel what spirit is bringing in for you. Develop a positive attitude. Stay focused on the positive end results you desire, to the exclusion of everything else. You must look away from what’s happening in the physical, and set your sites entirely upon what you are trying to manifest in your life. The physical will always give you the illusion that what you are experiencing at the moment is true, and can not be changed. That is a lie. Energy flows where thought goes. It’s how the universe is set up. We are all capable of changing our situation we find ourselves in. It’s just really frightening to think we could be responsible for whatever is happening at the moment. Then we would have to take responsibility for it. Get started in some training to open up your intuition. Once you have the name of one of your guides, that one will usually give you the names of your other guides, if you ask. Choose a form of communication you feel you have some success with, to communicate with spirit. The tool can be anything from tarot cards to crystal balls. Spirit will use absolutely anything to communicate with us if we set up the agreement with them first. Practice and lots of it is definitely required. That’s where classes come in. Class allows you a friendly, non threatening environment to learn and to grow, with like minded people.
Check out Whatever Works at the Kenwood borderline. Weekly training on all aspects of spiritual development. New guests are always welcome. Individual training available upon request. Psychic readings daily by appointment. Sometimes same day within two hrs. of your call.

Forgotten Dreams by David Mahen
What happened to your dreams? Think back, remember the dreams you had as a youth? As boys we wanted to be Firemen, Policemen, Pilots, or Doctors. Girls wanted to be Nurses, Teachers, Musicians, or Dancers. Some held fast to their dreams and became who and what they wanted to be. Over the years of transition from youth to adult those dreams solidified into a working, living reality. Motivation, goals, work, and accomplishments became the fulfillment and continuous outward expression of gratitude, and joy in their lives. Dreams fulfilled! But not everyone held fast to their dreams. For some the economic challenges are seemingly impossible to overcome. Others lived their youth in situations that stifled dreams in a dysfunctional environments. Discouraged, ignored, endangered, and abused, many buried their dreams so deeply that they became bittersweet memories, difficult to recall. Instead of following our dreams we followed a different path; one that led to school or work, a house, a family, and to the ever present pressure to meet expectations not quite our own. I have heard the expression “I
6
never dreamed it would be like this,” and sometimes enthusiastically proclaimed! More often I have heard it in a negative connotation, followed by phrases like “I feel trapped, I’m getting nowhere in this job,” or “I never wanted this…!” For a time, most look for ways to rekindle their dreams, their passion, and their love for doing something meaningful and fulfilling in life. A very few find their passion and we admire them and their lives have taken on meaning. But so many others follow a different path, where dreams, passion, and fulfillment are lacking. For a time they lean on excuses like: There aren’t any opportunities for what I want, I have a physical limitation, and the economy is to blame. Slowly and with certainty, the excuses become deeply programmed in the subconscious. Before long, the dreamers become victims and they own their excuses and believe them to be true. Life boils down to a choice—have I created my life or am I a victim of life? If we are creator, life is good because we are living our dreams. If we are victim, we can remain
Oct / Nov 2011
in that state or we can choose to begin creating again. How? Begin with the dreams, but don’t judge them with old patterns that say “I can’t, not me, I’m not deserving, or worthy, I don’t have what it takes.” Choose another thought. Call it a daydream or a wish, and see yourself living that dream. In that wish, you can be a pilot, an actress, a singer, a butcher, baker, or candlestick maker. Next take action toward that dream. How? This seems so terribly difficult, but there is a secret simple way to get there. You make it a project. A project has a beginning, a series of steps, and finally, actualization. What’s the obstacle? Well, first off, we don’t know how to make an effective project and action plan to follow. And the next step is harder—we probably won’t follow an action plan that leads us to our dream life. Why? It’s because we are conditioned to expect instant success. We have years upon years of conditioning in the patterns we need to change, and although it can be both rapid and profound, change is not often instant. One solution is to have a “friend” that will help you remain focused on your project. How? By helping whittle your life-project down into small easily digestible portions. It’s like eating an Elephant, a seemingly impossible task, but one that can be done one bite at a time. A great solution is to hire a Life Coach to assist with your life-project. A coach can assist in ways that your very best friends seldom do. Your friends can give great advice, but Your Coach can help you create a project and action plan based on your life and your dreams. Your Coach will help you stick with your action plans through regular reviews of your progress that include frequent meetings and telephone and email support. Live your dreams, they’re still waiting for you.

When the Student is Ready A Teacher will Appear by Michael McAdams All of my adult life I have been a seeker, a seeker with an open mind. In one form or another because of my desire to achieve a higher purpose I have been led, guided, and directed by gentle persuasives to the level I find myself at this day. As I have carried on conversations, met and questioned those with greater knowledge than my own, and investigated many sources of spiritual communication, there has always been that one book or that one person that was there to take me one step higher as I made my way upon this journey that we call life. Life is funny that way. Based upon your intentions and your desires God will make available to you information that will help you continue upon your quest of learning and advancement if your intentions are honorable and your motives are just. Many can look back upon their life and see that when they were ready someone was made available or some new information was brought to their attention that allowed them to continue upon their journey with renewed interest and piqued curiosity. Such is the way our spiritual teachers, angels, whatever name you care to give them will work with those they see as willing and receptive vessels eager for the joy of communication with spirit and humble before God, conscious not to use this new found ability to take advantage of their fellow man. In all humbleness and humility of spirit are these gifts given freely to loving and willing receptacles so that they may find joy in their existence and satisfaction in the act of service before God. God has given us many gifts. He has given us the gift of life. He has given us a soul. Most importantly He has given us the ability to choose. He has given us the gift of “free will.” One of the best definitions of will I have ever read is in the Urantia Book: “Will is the deliberate choice of a spirit-conscious being which leads to decision-conduct based upon intelligent reflection.” We all have been advised, led and guided. Then many times we toss all that advice aside and make decisions based upon what we feel is best or out of emotion rather than thoughtful consideration given to future

consequences. Life is a journey. Hopefully we all learn from our mistakes. Try not to waste a perfectly good learning opportunity by making the same mistake twice or even three times before the learning kicks in. I am publishing a book of messages and teachings dictated directly from spirit teachers/angels by a beautiful and most spiritual lady by the name of Wilma Jean Jones. Her book is “An Angel Told Me So.” I have a number of excerpts from her book on my web site spiritspeaks.com. Theses messages and teachings have been received over a period of twenty two years. Many of these messages end with a beautiful last line that sums up the teaching in the message. On April 1, 1979 a message from spirit teachers was received by Wilma. These teachers ended the message with this last line: “Work always to improve your own beings… for in the “end time” there lies your soul…with all the nourishment you have given it… totally dependent on the outcome of your intentions.” This message was signed: Your Loving Spiritual Teacher
About the author: Michael offers a set of his own writings called Spiritual Parchment Prints as a fundraising item for youth groups for churches and to the public. Michael has signed a contract to publish Wilma Jean Jones book “An Angel Told Me So” with Balboa Press, a division of Hay House. Wilma and Michael worked closely together as she received these dictated messages and teachings from spirit teachers over this twenty two year period. Wilma is Michael’s mother. Michael owns Starpath Satellite and sells satellite systems and Clearwire high speed internet for a living. Michael can be reached via his web site spiritspeaks.com.

Baker Chiropractic Reluctantly, I agreed and began therapy about a year and a half ago. It was slow progress in the beginning with three visits a week. Eventually, the sessions decreased to two and finally once a week. Over the past year, I have had minor set backs (but bounce back more quickly) mostly due to excessive exercise or long distance walking. Dr. Baker discovered that my arches were breaking down and prescribed orthotics for my walking shoes. What a difference this has made!
Joyce C. Smith’s Testimonial To awake in the morning and go throughout the day without a conscious thought of lower back pain, could be considered a miracle for me. Having lived with chronic back pain most of my adult life; having had two major spinal surgeries (including physical therapy) and possibly facing a third, my son Kent encouraged me to try chiropractic help from Dr. Baker before I went under the knife again.
My quality of life has so changed!! What Dr. Baker has done to enhance and improve it is beyond words. My bucket list has increased twofold: so far this year, I bought that little red convertible (makes me feel 25 years younger), traveled on my own to locations that some can only dream about and plan to do lots more before I reach 100. Kudos to you Dr. Baker and your team of excellent caring staff!

Mental Slave or Master Which are You?
by William Molitor, BCH, CI Do you feel like you are moving through your life in a daze, lacking motivation and enthusiasm? Have you ever looked back at the end of the day and realized that nothing you did inspired or motivated you? Have you ever become angry with someone or some event and then later wondered why you felt the way you did? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then this article may be just what you’re looking for to help you create a life that is more fulfilling, inspirational, or stimulating. Very few people are truly aware of the thoughts that they have in their own minds. Most thinking is habitual, automatic and unconscious. When these habitual and unconscious thoughts are positive in nature the outcome is good. But if your habitual thoughts are negative, this can cause problems. You can imagine your unchecked mind being like a small child who accepts and takes for granted everything he/ she sees and hears without any critical thought. If you continue to allow your mind to work this way you will quickly become a slave to your reactions instead of a master of your actions. Your subconscious mind is constantly flooded with ideas and information that come through all of your senses. This information can come from newspapers, TV as well as other people, and occurs whether you are aware of the process or not. If left unchecked this flood of information can easily become your way of thinking. The information that is stored in your subconscious mind has a direct influence on your behavior in the form of actions and reactions. It influences your choices, as well as your likes and dislikes. In short, this means that you could actually be allowing outside influences to control you. If you are like most people, you believe that your thoughts originate from your own mind. Have you ever
10
considered how you determined your desires, likes and dislikes? Have you ever wondered why you like a certain car? Was it because someone told you it was fast, reliable and a good buy and you believed them? Or was it because you checked it out, drove it, or you compared its cost to other cars? Much of the information at the subconscious level is recorded and unconsciously accepted as your own. When you have made a decision that you trust someone or a certain source of information, then much of what you receive from that person or source will bypass the critical factor of your conscious mind and be recorded as fact. This is very much like what occurs in hypnosis: a competent professional hypnotist will introduce new information in the form of hypnotic suggestions. If these suggestions meet the criteria of safe and believable they will be recorded in the subconscious mind as fact and immediately begin to gather more information to support the new way of thinking creating rapid and often permanent changes. An example of a common thought that creates problems in so many people is the thought that you have no “willpower”. In nearly every case this thought was learned from someone or a source other than yourself. If the thought, that you have no willpower, goes unchecked it begins to wreak havoc in your life. The more your mind repeats this thought, the stronger it becomes until it quickly becomes a belief. Regardless of whether it is true or not, it will have no effect on the results that you experience. You then become enslaved to miss-information. So by now you may have begun to see how your own thoughts could be enslaving you. When you allow other people’s opinions and ideas, judgments and beliefs to enter your mind unchecked you are literally turning over the control of your life experience to other people. Everyone has ambitions, desires and dreams that have been fostered from childhood. They may have come from a book that you read, a story that you heard, or even from a parent, a teacher or friend. The exact same source of influences can create fears, disabilities and self restrictions if accepted uncritically.
Oct / Nov 2011
To reduce the power of outside influences and thoughts on your life you only need to become more aware, or conscious, of the thoughts and desires that you allow to become a fact in your mind. Begin to analyze your motives and actions and you will be surprised to find that many of them are actually controlled by outside influences. The good news is that you do not have to accept each and every thought and idea that you receive. You can easily learn to check or analyze your motives and actions simply by conscious thinking. This means you take the time and think on purpose. You ask yourself whether you entertain certain thoughts and act and react a certain way because you decided to do so or because you automatically accepted outside influences. Learn to be free, do not accept every thought that you encounter as true. Ask yourself first whether it is for your own good to follow that thought. This may be difficult to do on your own because of the many beliefs that will block the information necessary to support this change. This difficulty would explain why many people that chose to use hypnosis to make positive changes in their life have reported that it was unbelievably easy. If you want to be the master of your mind and life, you should not let other people’s thoughts, desires and motives rule your life, unless you consciously choose so.

Autumn Prose by Charley Sky
Ahhhh, the beauty of an autumn day. fireworks like displays dot tree filled hillsides bursting with vivid color, giving in to ole man winters fond desire. Ahhhh, the beauty of an autumn day. where new lovers found in spring hold each other tight against the autumn chill. where children’s laughter fills the air as they bury each other in piles of brightly colored leaves. where older couples walk hand in hand, recalling fondly the springtime of their years, but delighting in a seasoned autumn bliss. Ahhhh,

the beauty of an autumn day. as we look forward to holiday cheer, with friends gathered around fireplaces sipping cider and telling tales of last summers fun. Ahhhh, the beauty of an autumn day. where life slows down from the mad rush of long summer days, and finally we catch our breath as we wait for our winter wonderland. Ahhhh yes, we must rejoice for the incredible beauty of an autumn day !
I wish all of you a joyous fall and winter season. Love and peace... Charley Sky

For those who have been here many times, the journey may appear less difficult. Whether you are an older soul or a newer one, obstacles often appear in our path. The important thing to remember is that we are on a path that promises riches untold for those who remain steadfast. The riches of Love, Service, Manifestation, Peace, Abundance and unbelievable Joy and Happiness awaits each and everyone who truly dresses in the armor of Spirit, cloaked in love and brings words and messages of truth and respect for everyone they encounter in the crusade of light. Change of Seasons by Tommy R. Thompson, DC, NMD, LAcp In Asian theory of health one of the philosophies is called “The 5 Element theory” it is used to demonstrate Change: Seasonal daily cycles, yearly cycles, life cycles changes. The Symbol “Tia Ghi” fig2 represents the yin and yang cycles of negative and Positive, day and night, male and female, coming and going, raising and lowering. The only constant in life is change. This diagram below
to the Metal element time of the year is the fall which rules the lung and Large intestine, the emotion is grief and loss, it also controls the skin. If the bowel is toxic then boils can appear, or if Lung is involved the skin can be dry, also so, seasonal allergies can be aggravated. The flow continues to the water element, Winter which represents kidney and bladder, the emotion is fear and uncertainty, area of the body is low back and knees, also chronic fatigue, many chronic low back problems are worse in the winter. Next is the wood element which represents the spring and the organs are the Liver and Gall bladder, the emotion anger and resentment. How many nice and happy alcoholics do you see? The body parts are tendons and muscle junction. The daily cycle is called the horary cycle and in the west the Circadian rhythm. Throughout the day our body cycles, the body spends 2 hours on each organ specifically through the day. This is why certain symptoms occur and return at certain times during the day. The 12 hour rule is an example, I will use this example because it is common among women. The concept of eyes open eyes close imbalance
Demonstrates this cycle of seasonal change, fig 1. The 5 elements can be also used to diagnosis organ dysfunction and the interaction between organ systems. This concept balances the Chi in these systems. CHI is body energy. To simplify this concept we are just going to explain the seasonal aspect, and daily aspects of these imbalances. Asian Medicine is metaphoric in describing many conditions. 5 element theories are used in Acupuncture to treat symptoms of pain, discomfort and imbalance. The top of the cycle is called the fire element it represents the Heart, small intestine, Triple burner and Pericardium, It represents the summer and the emotion of over Joyous or over excitement. It has a close connection to the energy of the mind or the “SHIN” this is why when there is change affecting the heart, physically or emotionally it can cause depression. It flows to the right to the Earth element is stomach and spleen represents late summer the emotions are worry and pensiveness (this why ulcer and digestive issues develop from too much worry), the flow continues next

the patient and can’t sleep through the night and is extremely fatigued in the late afternoon. This is an imbalance of the horary cycle. The eyes open at about 4:00 am in the morning; they toss turn and can’t fall back asleep, and could have night sweats. These patients are extremely fatigued in the late afternoon and upon waking. This is why the 5 energy drinks are so popular it gets them through the cycle of the kidneys and adrenal phase in the late afternoon. They keep pushing themselves with diminishing returns and end up taking sleeping medications so they can sleep.

These folks are later diagnosis with depression and anxiety disorders. They will take in too much caffeine to stimulate themselves, to get thru a work out or more long hours at work. In the end a cocktail of drugs to sleep and stay motivated without depression. The eyes open eyes closed disease is a metaphor of this imbalance of the Kidneys and lung based on the 12 hour rule. Mary Jane Hears a WHO? by Mary Jane Brigger When what we consider to be our self identity comes to an end, it can bring grief and a state of shock. Many of us define ourselves by our careers. I know I did, but in looking back my identity had nothing to do with my career. I defined myself by WHAT I WAS, not WHO I WAS. But how can you define WHO YOU ARE when you don’t have a clue to what that really means? About five years ago I lost my career to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. My body could no longer produce the energy it needed to function both mentally and physically resulting in losing my life as I knew it. I went from being an energizer bunny to road kill. Day after day I lay curled in a recliner in constant pain with debilitating weakness. The grief of losing my life and career was devastating beyond comprehension. But I discovered in time, there is a gift in endings. The gift is new beginnings. The long days of grief and convalescence became a review of my life. As I watched the parade of memories go by, I recognized so many life events and people who shaped my life, both good and bad. I recognized people and events that left bleeding emotional wounds deep in my body and soul. Some memories came from childhood, some came from adulthood. As each emotional wound magnified itself to me I realized I had been carrying these many wounds inside of me for years. Unable to express this pain, they became buried within my body as neverending body stories that replayed its chapters 24/7. These” body stories” attached themselves within me and infected my entire body, inside and out. My “body stories” developed layers or additional chapters that built on the origin of each of my emotional pains. My body made a “contract”’ with these body stories to keep me from recognizing or releasing them. Eventually these “contracts” led to physical illness. I had warning signs, but I did not recognize what was happening to me physically as well as emotionally. Crash, boom, bang, life as I knew it was over. I grieved over who and what I used to be.
16
In time I awakened to the fact that I never was a WHO, I was a WHAT. I discovered through learning to listen and understand what my body was telling me was that I was WHAT was expected of me from family, friends, employers, and society all my life. All I really understood or knew was their expectations of me and they were never good enough for anybody. Eventually my own expectations weren’t either. Then the life and career I thought I wanted back, I finally understood had ended for a reason and a purpose. The Gift of the Ending of WHAT I WAS became the Gift of New Beginnings of WHO I WAS. I became acquainted with two healers, Donny Lobree and Dr.Kirk Prine who taught me how to release these old body stories and break the contracts my body had made with them. It was a weekend called The Body Story Experience that changed my life forever. As I released my body stories I became awakened to WHO I WAS with acute awareness of my Beloved Spirit within me. Each step on my journey of personal healing led me closer and closer to connecting with the True Me and My Personal Truth. I became transformed by Healing Light and Love that revealed my New Life and Purpose. I was to be a healer to serve those who have struggled all their life with low self esteem, low self confidence and worse of all, no idea of WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT A GIFT YOU ARE TO THIS WORLD! My miraculous transformation has also led me to becoming a healer in Reiki as well becoming a Body Story™ Expert from The Body Story™ Experience with Donny and Kirk. Blending Reiki with the inner healing power of The Body Story™ Experience I found to be a powerful alchemy of Love, Light and Healing. I daily give thanks for the Gift of Endings and Beginnings, for I now know it brings me my True Self Identity with the Gift of New Life in Service with Purpose. NOVEMBER Homegrown Medicine Saturday, November 19th from 10am-NOON Hosted by Dr. Cathy Rosenbaum, Holistic Clinical Pharmacist & Wes Duren. Prior to the emergence of modern healthcare and the age of lab-inspired pharmaceuticals, humankind acquired relief from all manner of maladies through the use of plants found in nature, dating back as early as 1500 BC. Only in the last 50 years has chemically derived medicine become the norm. Conventional medications can be expensive, habit-forming, and are frequently used to treat symptoms rather than the root of illness. Not to mention, they’re known to produce damaging side affects, causing dangerous counteractions when used with other medications. Learn about homegrown medicine courtesy of Dr. Cathy Rosenbaum (Holistic Clinical Pharmacist) and our own Wes Duren from Marvin’s Organic Gardens, as they discuss the benefit of organic herbs and natural medicinal plants to promote optimal human health and how you can grow them in your own backyard. Join us for this enlightening discussion! For more information, please contact the Garden Center at 513.932.3319.

Sweet Potato
One Nutritious Vegetable
The sweet potato is a familiar vegetable served at the Thanksgiving Holiday feast, but we all would benefit from consuming this nutritious vegetable all year round. Not to be confused with yams, sweet potatoes are really not a potato at all. A sweet potato is a root, and a yam has a distinct taste with a hardy texture and are hardly sweet. Sweet potatoes come in many varieties, their flesh can be white, orange, yellow and purple, they come in different shapes and sizes. Very rich in beta-carotenes, especially the deeper colored varieties, sweet potatoes have an excellent source of vitamins C, B2, B6, E and biotin (B7). Rich in dietary fiber, sweet potatoes are packed with minerals, they provide good amounts of manganese, folic acid, copper and iron. They contain powerful anti-oxidants which help combat inflammatory conditions like arthritis, asthma, gout, etc.
18
High in potassium, sweet potatoes help to prevent heart attack and strokes, and it helps to regulate blood pressure. Safe for diabetics to consume because sweet potatoes actually help to stabilize and lower insulin resistance. This wonderful vegetable strengthens the immune system, can give you a boost of energy while keeping your digestive tract very healthy, and has also been known to prevent colon cancer. The best way to store them is in a cool, dark and well ventilated space, not wrapped in plastic and not in the refrigerator, they will last up to 10 days. There are many ways to serve this super food, sweet potatoes are delicious baked, and they are excellent choices for soups and casseroles. Enjoy the healthy benefits, they are not just for Thanksgiving dinner anymore!

Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. In a separate, large bowl, mix the sweet potatoes and butter. Add the flour mixture to the potato mixture and mix to make a soft dough. Happiness is Having a Pet by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger We pick up their poop, clean their litterbox, muck their stalls. We take them for walks even when we are exhausted from a long work day. We get up early on cold, dark winter mornings to feed them. They leave hair all over our furniture, embarrass us by jumping on visitors, and hack up hairballs in the middle of the night. They probably eat better food than we do. We will take them to the vet long before we take ourselves to the doctor. Even when we need to sleep, we will take time to pet and talk with them. We hold them close to us when they transition, and we mourn their loss for years. Why? Because.... They are always glad to see us, even if we have only been gone for 5 minutes. They sit beside us for hours while we grieve the loss of a loved one. They lay on the bed with us when we are sick and grumpy. They watch Tv or read with us on lonely nights. They forgive us for yelling at them, forgetting to fill up their water, leaving them home alone for long hours while we work, for not being present with them. They let our children dress them in funny clothes. They carry us uncomplainingly on their backs and forgive our poor skills and lack of understanding. They chase foreign objects for us, and sometimes even bring them back. They listen to our bad jokes, our complaints about the cost of gas, the idiot co-worker, the rude driver, the inconsiderate child or spouse. They will be with us, in silence, in peace, in joy, in sadness, in anger, and in conflict. They make us smile with their silly antics, and shake our heads at their peculiar ways. In short, they love us ... No matter what we do or how we treat us. They are always there for us, even after they pass over.
hamster a special treat. Thank them for loving you, no matter what. Appreciate them for exactly who they are, even when they soil the carpet, chew up your shoe, step on your foot, or think your finger is a carrot. Express gratitude for the gift they truly are for you. Acknowledge them when you come home, even when you are very tired. You are the center of their universe.

Finding Meaning by Jean Jeffers What brings meaning to life? We are meaning makers, each finding, in our own way, a path to intimacy. Mickey found what was important in his life by using his talents and being of service. As a teacher, as a pro life warrior, and as a St. Vincent DePaul volunteer, Mickey is committed to a life of service. I found in Ed’s story a similar thread. He describes finding the meaning in his life by getting involved with others, in church, and in activities. Ed has, for a number of years, been part of a mission group which has traveled to Appalachia, and to Central America. He also belongs to a men’s group at church and finds relating with these men invaluable in his life, in his Christian walk. Says Ed, “I find there is strength in getting together with others for matters of faith.” These men have found passion in life. They have found a way to make a contribution.
Some other areas that may bring meaning to life include: 1. Getting healthy and working on self. Working on being fit, or taking up yoga, are ways to plug into this setting. 2.Taking up a new hobby, or an educational pursuit. Finding an activity for which we have enthusiasm may lead to a finer life. 3.Doing something to help another. Everyone needs a hand once in a while and giving a hand from time to time is a way of meeting a personal need. Living a life of purpose can build character and enhance life. It sets us up for right living. And if we have a community of mature people about us to support us, then if we falter, we will be lifted up. About the Author: Jean Jeffers is a retired RN and a writer. She tries to incorporate the spiritual in her work. She is a member of St. Xavier Parish.
Meaning is not found in competing for top jobs or in looking to snag the corner office. It is more often found in” the ground of our being” –being a father who spends time with his children, being a woman who takes a second job to help her son get through school. Being courageous, being noble, being compassionate, or just being authentic and sensitive, is about bringing meaning to life. Perhaps you are looking for this something as well. Finding it is not through business as usual or a frantic search. It is more like being led by God to a talent or calling. It is something to reflect upon. Prayer is an effective starting point. It opens the floodgates to that place where we can commune with the Divine. It helps us hear the whisper from above. This could be a time for meditation, for Scripture, or just prayer. A sense of meaning may also be reached by something as simple as setting life goals, immediate and long term. These goals may not need to be met entirely, just progress is sufficient

Thyroid: Over-active or Under-Active?
by Paul F. Fulk,
D.C., F.A.S.A. So many times over the years I have seen this subject misinterpreted. Is it when the TSH(thyroid stimulating hormone) is low, that the thyroid is low or hypo? Probably one of the most misinterpreted lab values is this one. Because when it is low, the value is saying that the thyroid is actually hyper and the opposite is true when it is high. In other words the thyroid when the TSH is high above the lab normals, the thyroid is hypo or underactive. Some other values that are relative to the thyroid and parathyroid are the T3 and T4 lab values. To make it even more misunderstood when the T4 is above the lab normals, it is saying that the parathyroid is not functioning up to par. What does all this mean to the average patient? It means a lot of confusion especially when the physician does not know how to interpret what the lab is reporting. When I see a patient gaining weight simply by drinking water, it is not saying that the thyroid is not doing it’s job and being sluggish causing a person to gain weight. What the values are telling me is that the parathyroid is not doing it’s job. I have seen this in many cases. Many patients have arrived at the office thinking their thyroid was underactive and that was the reason they were gaining weight. They were totally confused when their diets did not support the reason for them gaining weight. They were consuming very few calories, but still gaining weight. The only thing that they were drinking was water, not even sodas with sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Both of which will put weight on most people. Especially if the sodas were diet sodas. They will actually make you gain weight. The thyroid is a very important gland that sits just underneath your chin in the front part of your throat. It’s primary function is to make thyroxine and triodothyronine. Triodothyronine is utilized by the ovaries in the female. Thyroxine is a controller of your metabolism via the liver. In the liver this hormone
22
is what breaks down protein to muscle sugar, blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides and protein bound urea nitrogen. Which means that it plays a very important role in your body’s energy levels and your brain function, since your brain requires one-third of all the blood sugar that the liver produces. So maintaining normal blood sugar levels is dependent upon the thyroid functioning in a normal manner. In order for that to happen, the thyroid needs iodine in order to function. It also needs thymoglobulin made in the spleen to combine it with iodine to make thyroxine. All this is important to make the liver work as long as it is not disrupted and shut down by statin drugs. Believe it or not cholesterol is a good thing. Without cholesterol you cannot survive. The outside covering of the red blood cells and white blood cells is cholesterol and just as important is the fact that cholesterol is what you use for your hormones whether it be testosterone, progesterone or estrogen. All, very important for your body functions. You may be telling your doctor that you are tired, just can’t function, you are dragging around the house, even at the beginning of the day and after you have had a good night sleep. Your doctor will request that you have blood work done to verify his suspicion of a sluggish thyroid. If the lab report comes back with the results and the values are indicating a hypothyroid, he will in most cases prescribe a drug called synthroid which is a synthetic thyroxine. There is a more natural product that can supply you the needed thyroxine called Armour’s thyroid. This is also a prescribed product because it contains the hormone thyroxine. However, in many cases the only product that you need is natural organic iodine which is what the thyroid needs in order to make it’s own thyroxine. I cannot finish this article without including something that I have observed in my 34 years in practice. It is very noteworthy to consider the normal and abnormal anatomy. In many underactive thyroid cases, I have seen vertebrae out of place and impinging the nerves that go to and from the thyroid that basically control its function. So, it is obvious that the thyroid cannot

do its job without any power supply from the nervous system and the brain nor have its messages to the brain impeded. So if you feel like you have lead in your pockets and are just dragging around, the thyroid is one of the organs that can have an influence on how you feel even though there are many other causes that can also produce the same type of symptoms. It is worth while having it checked to see if it is only iodine that you might need. If you have any questions, feel free to call me and schedule a fifteen minute free consultation time. Full Circle by Cynthia M. Brown
I have just ďŹ nished visiting Cherokee N. C. as part of a gathering with Cherokee medicine man J.T. Garrett and his son Michael. I have long wanted to come to a Full Circle Gathering. If you are not of the tribe, you must be invited. To receive an invitation, you must ask for one and tell Doc Garrett why you want to come. Usually non-tribe members must be healers or working in ways that promote the healing of self, community and earth. My position as Executive Director of a transformational healing and peace education center provided me with the opportunity to attend.
live in sectional homes and townhome complexes. There is a beautiful school complex, shops, hotels, wellpaved roads and many social services. While the casino has brought many needed improvements, it has also changed the face of Quallah Boundary in ways typical of urban sprawl, modernization and consumerism.
First, I have been going to Cherokee for much of my life. As a young child, I remember the poverty; the dirt oors and the shacks without running water. The village was small and the main tourist attractions were a caged bear and alligator wrestling. The wolf clan where we visited was at the top of a mountain with gravel one lane roads.
I was apprehensive about going to the actual village. I knew it had burned but did not realize it had been completely destroyed. I knew about circle gatherings and how once invited in, you are family, so I expected we would be in the real village not the tourist complex. Unfortunately, we held our gathering in a convention center hotel just outside Cherokee. We did do rituals on the land and water but we stayed at the center most of the time. After the conference was over, I tried to ďŹ nd the old road to wolf clan land but was unsuccessful. The old village is no more.
In the past decade, I have visited when I drove to Sylva, N. C. to see my grandmother. The casino has meant a lot of change. The old village burned down years ago. The clans
I was reminded of the adage that one cannot ever go home again. While Cherokee was not ever my home, many of my childhood memories live in those beautiful

mountains. I know I have an ancestral link to the Boundary and the people. Even though so much has changed, I did learn that the things that make those wonderful people unique and so amazing is forever the same. I went to Cherokee to study the Medicine Way. The tribe is very protective of its history and its rituals. They do not give information concerning their spiritual life easily, nor do they give it in ways most understand. The Medicine is taught through story and memory. The learning is contextual. It is taught through searching for the right questions and understanding that sometimes the answer is just that we are not ready to receive the knowledge. What is freely given, is hospitality and the genuine offer of family to all who ask with an open heart. The Medicine teaches to always welcome another without judgment because we may share an ancestor and therefore be brother or sister. The Medicine teaches us to accept that in every moment, we are choosing how to live and accepting the consequences of those choices. It teaches us that in everything, there is a gift, if we are willing to reflect and see it. The Cherokee village of my childhood is gone. I know it was a place of poverty and suffering. I know it was a world where children could not speak their own language in school or in just in a public place. Still I mourned its loss. Today new houses line the roads. The dirt and gravel lanes are wide, well-maintained roads. The new school has signs in both English and Cherokee. Young people compete in story telling from the old days in their own language and proudly call out their Cherokee names to one another. I came to Cherokee to learn about the Medicine and, to chase a few ghosts. I leave these hills and streams that I love so well, having learned that the People and the way of being are the heart of this place. That will never change. Doc Garrett says to understand the Medicine Way we must first surrender our expectations and learn to just be. To be welcomed into Full Circle, to dance the feather dance and sing the Pine Needle Song, to be touched by an eagle’s feather and embraced by a sister or brother of the blood is to be in the Medicine. It is good to be in the Medicine and I am thankful.

“What Prayer Can Do” God, Please Give Me A Sign Upon retiring, I did a myriad of things - I enrolled in non-credit courses, volunteered with mailings at the Garden Center and Art Museum, sorted clothes for the Pregnancy Center, and sold raffle tickets for a nonprofit organization. But, through the years I began to feel unfulfilled; I wanted to do something more. While growing up, a few people told me I had a flair for writing - but I never felt good enough. “God, please tell me what I should do,” was my prayer for months. One day I was sitting in the lounge at the University of Cincinnati, waiting for a class to start, when a moderator came over to talk. Shortly after, his wife joined us in the conversation. He introduced me to her by saying: “She’s (meaning me) a beautiful writer.” (I had been in one of his writing classes earlier that year). Although I was flattered by his compliment, I passed it off by thinking he was just being kind. I couldn’t compare my skills to the people in his class who had been so accomplished!
26
When I arrived home that evening, in the mailbox was an issue of a local health and wellness magazine. Inside was a short story I had written for a monthly contest. A few months earlier, I had been informed that I had a runner up, but that my story would be published the following month. At the time, I thought: “I’m just being placated.” But, sure enough, here it was in print with my name at the bottom! That same night ,the assistant editor of an inspirational magazine called to tell me a short article I had sent in was being published. (All this happened on the same day!) When I told a friend about these three incidents, she said: “God is talking to you.” I felt God was showing me by these signs the path He wanted me to take. So - since then I’ve been free-lancing in an effort to do His Will by helping to touch people through the written word. And I’m feeling fulfilled! - Geraldine McDougall

513-834-0317 It is in the time of managing the simplest to complexity of things and matters of the soul that the noncompliant soul “tethers and tethers” about the mundane. When the sky seems to tear from the clouds in an immensity of clouds bursting, tasks of everyday life comes to a halt. It is all important sweet ones, that you must come to a sense of prioritizing in a single but most effective sense. Intensity in vibration will enhance. There will be a feeling of edginess, that is, likened to a fractured energy. Many earth changes and political changes will be aligned. Waking up in the middle of the night will be an effective way for angels to communicate with individuals. Those whom have open hearts, open minds, souls alert and sensing change will be the instruments for the higher consciousness of God, the Father. It is not important what your system of thoughts are, the kingdom of higher intelligence will take you by surprise. You will feel the “gifts of spirit” touching your direction. The “veil” between heaven and earth is opening, becoming thinner and thinner. Rest assured, sweet ones, the love of the creator has not forsaken or cast aside your dreams. Lessons will arrive with a new sense of direction, children do not lose faith in goodness unless they are in the dark too long. Bring family together in prayers. It is the most powerful mixture of the execution of faith and good intention, a vision for only goodness and healing that can change the misdirection of that which is around the hill, so to speak. Sweet ones, remember that you are the very core of power shared with the spirit of goodness. Do not distrust your true nature from inheriting the richness of joy that only peace can bring.

October begins with Saturn, the teacher, affecting mainly the birthdays in mid October. You are learning, through experiences that affect your loved ones, that you can indeed become more independent, and take more responsibility for your own needs. Also, surprising new friends will be showing up. Some of you will be signing up for new learning procedures, or travel, and another area claiming attention will be in terms of income, outgo. Jupiter, planet of opportunities, can be bringing in some monetary increases, and some of that just may go for much needed repairs on the home front.

October 23 – November 21
In October, Scorpios are occupied with a very favorable process of remaking themselves, designed to show their more charming side. This may be because they are more in the public eye and in a “take-charge” mode. For early Scorpios, the possibility of favorable connections with partners is very strong, and this may be because of new and surprising changes in the work area. Lots of activity concerning money – coming or going – is going on, but be aware of a tendency to go overboard, and make sure that the contracts and paper work are in order. New moon around Halloween will be a trigger point to bring this in.
f 21
Sagittarius November 22–December
You’ve always got big plans, but much of October finds you working diligently behind the scenes to bring the plan to fruition. And at the same time, there could be learning and/ or travel experiences that are very enjoyable or favorable. Also, do be aware that there could be the possibility of serious illnesses pertaining to loved ones. But the clouds lift come November, and you could be traveling. Your ruling planet, Jupiter, is bringing possibilities in the labor or employment area, but the arena is a bit tighter than you prefer, meaning closer to home, or the expenses need to be more realistic.
28
Mercury retrograde in your sign at the end of October will cause you to rethink some of your expectations.
g
Capricorn December 21 – January 19
Early Capricorns are going through a serious remake in terms of their self image, and are likely re –thinking their position, career or partnership in terms of how much or how little they may have invested in the process. Parents (or your role as a parent) are quite likely to be part of this situation. New moon at Halloween has you rethinking your goals. In addition, there could be children who are needing financial support, and you do spend a considerable amount of time doing planning or refiguring on their behalf. Also, there may be some sudden, unexpected events concerning either a parent, or the home base. This all means you have to keep making adjustments.
h
Aquarius January 19 – February 18
Hail to the Aquarians, fore-runners of the Aquarian Age. This time frame finds you traveling, teaching or even publishing, with a very serious intent of working diligently at these projects. You are being called to get your message out. This could mean sudden, abrupt changes in location, or possibly sudden travels. Your intuition is telling you that you may have to be a bit more organized, or even grounded, as your future means of income may be more holistic, or individual, but still needing structure to contain the dream. Changes in the career may of course require attention to home base, either to sell or purchase. The new moon at Halloween will register here.
i
Pisces February 18 – March 20
Early Pisces are somewhat aware that the old order for them is leaving, and they are being called to embrace the unknown. This brings on the twin energies of fear or faith. You know that you have to restructure your future goals and plans, and this is urging you to partake in more learning or studies. The new moon at Halloween will indicate this.
Oct / Nov 2011
Mercury retrograde at Thanksgiving will find you rethinking your career, and refiguring time spent versus income or outgo. October finds you going over the financial picture, and paying off old debts. November will reward you with exciting insights and potential new psychic gifts.
^
Aries March 20 – April 19
Early Aries are eager to break away from old patterns and start some brand new activities. There are planets that are creating difficulties here, many of which involve marriages or close relationships, and may actually require a change in the career. Some of you will be having a very enjoyable October in terms of fun and recreation. October also sees you working on your financial picture and deciding what to keep and what to throw away. November comes in with a strong demand to get busy and get the job done, but is also paired with some recreational activity. It seems to be a balancing act between fun and work!
_
Taurus April 19 – May 20
Early Taurus individuals have Jupiter, planet of opportunities, in their corner, and could be benefiting from property and/or financial investments come late October. Possible partners with money or financial advise may show up, so be aware of this possibility coming in around Halloween. November may find you in the mood to travel, or spend money on much needed items. The planet Uranus is in the background, suggesting change, which is difficult for Taurus, but you will find it will pay off in the long run. Take care of your health issues now..
`
Gemini May 20 – June 21
Your ruling planet, Mercury spends much of October finding you immersed in overhauls at the job site, or possibly taking a longer look at your health issues. November brings in an exciting period of making plans with partners, and even the Mercury retrograde here cannot dispel the growing sense of enjoyment of potential recreation/romance. Some of you will find an old romance flourishing again. And some of you will take pleasure in the growing maturity of a child or children. You are excited about setting new goals for yourself, and along with this is the need to reconsider the financial demands.
a
Cancer June 22-July 22
Early Cancers may be very much involved with a serious review of significant others, whether that be a marriage, or a
Infinity
significant other, or even just the idea of “how do I relate with people in general, and how might that be improved”. In that same mix they will be factoring in their role as a parent, or the role of parents in their life. This may lead to a sudden change of status, when all conditions have been brought to light. Extra work as the holiday period comes in may just put more dollars in the pocket. The new moon eclipse at Thanksgiving will bring in more opportunities on the job and even in the social life.
b
Leo July 22 – August 22
This period finds you in a rather serious study mode, which may have come about because you are excited about new learning techniques or programs. The full moon in mid October will highlight this. Around Halloween the new moon will set off some renovations at home, or possibly awareness of the needs of one of the parents. Career potentials are looming as being prosperous and/or productive, so be prepared to do the learning or skills that will benefit you here. Employment conditions have more governing regulations, but put in the effort to submit the paper work that they require.
c
Virgo August 22 – September 22
You are preparing behind the scenes for what you need to do, and by early November will have your plan intact. There is a tremendous concern over financial matters, and you are getting very clear on what the obligations are. You may get financial advice from the experts in these fields, and the new moon at Halloween will emphasize the need for this. In the month of November there appears to be travel and movement, either away from home base or to larger quarters. You are looking at new ways to support the income, and are more willing than usual to take a risk.
