Autumn, the Season of Self Reflection
A Health & Wellness Publication Oct / Nov 2016 Magazine Southwest Ohio’s Leading Health Magazine Vol. 70
L etter from the editor Dear Readers, Autumn’s tempo sets the pace in preparing us for the new season at hand. Pumpkin spice and everything nice or as it should be is a reminder that there is always room for improvement in our lives. As the sun sets over the horizon, let us never forget our roots, our ancestry, that brought us to the place that we stand today and call it home. Through determination and courage our nation became unified by hard working individuals who shared a common dream. They fought for freedom for our people. Every man, woman and child carried on and passed the torch to generations of families creating history and traditions that are still celebrated today. Raising awareness to those who do not wish to stand for what is right and dignified is a responsibility that all of mankind should share. Let integrity and strength be a common theme in the thread of our lives, the fabric of our nation and world depend on it. Let us always represent honor and respect to fortify and nurture a wounded world. Stand tall, let wisdom become a mainstay with every decision making process. Reach out to the souls who need healing, step forward and seek justice for our children, innocence should not come with a price. For it is the pure heart that will amplify what is needed for humanity. Listen closely for the sound of peace, it is only a heartbeat away. Tread where others do not dare to go, take a chance and watch your dreams unfold. The season of Fall can bring forth an inner sense of reflection where you have walked your path. Continue the journey in a new direction, set your course for success, allow yourself to be graced by the rich abundance of life that surrounds you. In the spirit of peace and harmony, pay it forward in everything you do, for it is the true measure of happiness and contentment. Happy Thanksgiving to all and to those of you around the world, may you celebrate the gift of family and friends. Yours in health, Jane Phillips Editor in Chief Publisher On the cover: A Cornucopia of Abundance! As the brilliant colors of Autumn begin to unfold, get ready for the pumpkin patch with a hayride, and pick a pumpkin or two! Take a walk in nature exploring the beauty of the season. Enjoy all the comforts the season of Fall has to offer!

Signature Profile Teal Blue is the New Orange! For a Happier and Safer Halloween It is that time again! Fall is here and that means your little goblins are getting excited and probably beginning to think about Halloween. Sometimes this annual event of trick or treating can be fun for kids but scary for the parents because of their child’s food allergies. Introducing the Blue Pumpkin Food project, developed by the Food Allergy Research & Education Center (FARE). This new campaign has been designed to make Halloween safe for all children but mainly for children who suffer with food allergies that could be hidden in all types of candy given out on trick or treat nights for Halloween. It is a serious situation for children who suffer with food allergies. Halloween’s trick or treat night can become a nightmare for parents, the safety risk of a child eating a piece of candy that could contain nuts or other foods that the child is allergic to can create a real health concern. FARE began this project by creating an awareness with suggesting a family display a teal blue pumpkin or a sign of a teal blue pumpkin on Halloween. This teal blue pumpkin represents that non candy items will be passed out on trick or treat night for children who may have food allergies. Non-food items can be stickers, crayons, erasers, bubbles, spider rings, vampire teeth, glow sticks, just to name a few. Amazon and the Oriental Trading Co, online have a variety of items to choose from. Get the whole family involved and when it is time to carve the pumpkin, paint a pumpkin teal blue and begin a tradition that will last for years to come and it will greatly benefit children who are at risk with food allergies. To learn more about this wonderful project, go to foodallergy.org/teal-pumpkin-project.
ASpiritual sk Sage Woman: Advice
for the Real World with Sage Woman
Dear Sage Woman, I suffer from depression and anxiety. I am seeking a more holistic and spiritual way to deal with it. If you can offer any tools to go alongside the professional/ medical care I am receiving, I would so appreciate it. Thank you, Celia D. _____________ Dear Celia, I am happy to share some of the tools I have used during my own experiences of depression and anxiety in life. What I am offering today should not replace any professional and/or medical care you are currently under. Please discuss these suggestions with your doctor before incorporating them into your daily routine. Many of us experience periods when we have feelings of anxiety and depression. At times we can trace these feelings to a particular life experience, trauma or loss. Other times we just feel the way we do and have no idea why. If the symptoms continue for an extended period of time, it is important to seek medical advice. Alongside, however, there are many ways you can begin rebalancing yourself and reconnecting body, mind and spirit. As you begin your healing journey, know that the real you isn’t truly depressed and never has been. Your essential nature is pure love, pure spirit and pure potentiality.
4
The first thing I do when I feel anxiety, is breathe. I use a simple breathing exercise that takes very little time, but packs a big punch. If possible, stop all movement, close your eyes, and take seven slow deep breaths. Send each breathe to the seven chakras. Inhale and send your breath to your root chakra and exhale and do the same to the remaining six: sacral, solar plexus, heart chakra, throat, third eye and crown. Connecting with your sacred breath will connect you with Source and will instantly bring an inner calm. I still do this at least once or twice a week. It works! Numerous scientific studies have found meditation to be effective for treating anxiety. All mental activity requires a physical correlation to the brain, and this connection is often studied in relation to anxiety. Regular meditation allows your brain to develop new pathways, replacing the old patterns of worry. If meditation is difficult for you, simplify it. Choose a mantra such as: “I am centered,” and repeat it over and over as you sit comfortably in 3-5 minutes of silence. Do this every day and it will become a habit. A habit in which you are giving your mind, body and spirit permission to detach from the outside world in order to reboot. When I was experiencing my own “dark night of the soul,” I incorporated walking into my morning ritual. I was filled with much grief, anxiety and sadness, and it sometimes took a miracle just to get me out the door. Once I began to experience the magic of walking in nature, however, I began to organically decompress. Walking is proven to be a simple and effective way to elevate your mood. Unused energy in the body appears to cause anxiety in the mind. The mind/body connection really does exist, and since a lack of activity causes
Oct / Nov 2016
a considerable amount of unused energy, anxiety may be the result. So it makes sense to take a walk and walk away the unused energy. I highly recommend a ritual bath for cleansing one’s body, mind, and spirit of inner and outer negativity, as well as stagnant energy. I normally do so once a month on the full moon. I begin by setting an intention of releasing any and all things that may be weighing heavy on my mind or heart. I brew myself a cup of chamomile tea and let the bath begin. The first step is to smudge your entire body with sage, cedar or sweet grass, setting your intention for your bath. What do you wish to release? The root cause of illness, anxiety, and negativity is the unwillingness to let go physically, mentally, and emotionally of anything that does not serve your highest good. Next light your favorite candle or candles and set them out around your bath. Before your run the water, you will want to bring to a gentle boil (in a large pot) a very generous handful of each: rosemary, white sage and basil. Fresh is best. Once the water and herbs have come to a full boil, let them sit for a few minutes and then add the herbal water to your already warm bath water and soak in it for at least 15-20 minutes. During my soak, I often focus on all of the things I am grateful for in my life and even look for the gifts in the very issues likely causing my anxiety and depression. This is definitely one of my favorite ways to decompress. Of course there are so many other ways to holistically and spiritually bring peace into your life. Other possibilities are yoga, prayer, journaling, spending quality time with friends and family, to name a few. I hope that you can resonate with one or two of these suggestions and I wish you peace, wholeness and unconditional love. Blessings, Sage About the Author: Sage Woman is a spiritual life coach &

The Season of Self Reection by Cynthia, Little Flower
The moody skies give way to the ever changing mosaic of color that soothes the soul. A hint of crispness taints the air, and the aroma of ripe apples teases our appetites. Anticipation of cozy, quiet evenings fills our hearts with expectation, as we plan the traditional celebrations to come. The season of gratitude, mystery and tomfoolery is upon us. We are excited for the gifts this equinox brings. Beautiful, wonderful autumn is here and we are delighted! Fall is the time for self-reflection. A fire ensues, as healing green transforms to the gold of illumination, reminding us to pay attention to that which presents itself to us because it does have meaning. The orange of spiritual intent provides a clear message that we are creatively supported on our journey of self-discovery. Red calls us to action, to use all of our energy to move us in the right direction. Brown is for grounding staying focused as Mother Earth so graciously cares

for us. The leaves on the trees are our picturesque guides, setting the stage for success for this blessed time of contemplation. The golden winds of change are swirling into our lives. Daylight wades and darkness begins its lessons encouraging us to return to introspection. It provides more time for this spiritual journey with longer nights than days. Our subconscious brings us messages in our dreams and we are encouraged to pay attention to the details. As autumn paints the most exquisite picture filled with rich colors, we are reminded of the changes within us – so vivid that they cannot be ignored. Forgiveness is a necessity for us to go on freely, and the process is three-fold. We must forgive ourselves for being in the situation, forgive those who played a part in the karmic scenario, and forgive this world of polarities, which brings us the severe opposites of

negative and positive. Darkness defines the light. We will be in more darkness in this season, to redefine our light. As the season of gratitude, we must be grateful that the lessons have played out and we are moving on to the next lesson, wiser and more filled with light. The mystery of the season fills us with excited anticipation as we are presented with an opportunity to know ourselves better. The masks of Halloween (All Hallows Eve) are a reflection of the many masks we wear already: mother, father, sister, brother, wife, husband… If we were to choose a mask for our new karmic direction, what would it be? The balanced scales shift as everything in our lives presents reflections - a mirror, a gage, a testament to where we are right now and what we have created. We have time to look at this reflection and think about it, and decide what our next step will be. This is the time to celebrate the end of a bountiful cycle and to take a rest. Although our days are full of activity, with school in session, programs and work, nature informs us that rest is still necessary. She gives us shorter days and longer nights. Let’s rest well as we rediscover our new path. Let’s enjoy the journey and drink in the beauty with all that we are. We have earned it.

Secrets of Sonic Levitation by Jill Mattson
Ancient manuscript describe sound levitating heavy, perhaps aiding in the building of huge pyramids and monuments. Ancient texts, all over the globe, describe sound as an effective method to move and alter dense physical matter. According to ancient wisdom, the power of sound increased with large numbers of participants singing or playing musical instruments. Each individual accessed energy that originated from the heavens. Two singers together created more energy than each singing separately, as if their combined voices increased energy logarithmically. Heavenly energy from large choirs constantly sang to make a country potent, almost invincible.
their sound to go underneath a huge rock and up it went. Details are given in Bruce Cathie’s free book, Acoustic Levitation of Stones.5 In another example, Edward Leedskalnin, a man with humble financial resources and a fourth grade education, built a monument to his lost love who canceled their wedding one day before the ceremony. In this area of Homestead Florida the coral can be up to 4,000 feet thick. Leedskalnin cut and moved huge blocks of coral himself with only hand tools, yet each section weighed more than 58 tons.6 Leedskalnin left the castle as proof that he could move large stones without equipment.
Author Bruce Cathie described an eye witness account of many Tibetan monks moving huge boulders with their voices and musical instruments. The exact location of the singers and musicians was crucial for the “anti-gravity sonic effects” to work.1 Various ancient writing describe directional sounds as a source of mechanical power, as if sound was squirted out of a water pistol: aim was important.2
Leedskalnin claimed he knew how the Egyptians built their pyramids. He built Coral Castle by reportedly “singing” to large stones to lift them. Leedskalin placed his hands over a stone to be levitated. He sung a scale until his hands felt a response from the stone. (Each tone was sustained to detect a subtle vibratory response.) The sound that produced the strongest vibration was sustained for quite some time to give the rock a powerful dosage and the rock levitated.
A German article, by Swedish engineer Olaf Alexanderson3 described sonic levitation: ‘We know from the priests of the far east that they were able to lift heavy boulders up high mountains with the help of groups of various sounds... the knowledge of the various vibrations in the audio range demonstrates to a scientist of physics that a vibrating and condensed sound field can nullify the power of gravitation.”
In a high tech example, high powered sound can suspend and move objects in air. Yoshili Hashimoto of Tokyo’s Kaijo Corporation developed an acoustic levitation machine. The sound vibrates 20,000 times per second to keep a small silicon wafer hovering on millimeter above a surface. Acoustic levitation experiments have been conducted in space as the absence of gravity make better conditions to observe just the impact of sound.
Observations4 only 20 years ago in Tibet from a civil engineer, Henry Kjelson, reported that a Swedish doctor, Dr Jarl, made a journey to Tibet in 1939 to visit a high Lama. This lama let him observe sonic levitation of huge rocks up a cliff of about 250 meters.
The wonders of sound… we have not scratched the surface of what this energy source can do – if properly harnessed. The future science of sound and vibrational energy will “rock” our world!
The task was accomplished by mapping out exactly where singers and musicians stood. They angled

It’s not right or wrong to desire things, but the things we choose to desire determine the quality of our lives. If our desires never go beyond material things, then we live a shallow life. If our desires go beyond accumulating things for ourselves to helping those around us, our lives tend to be more satisfying. If our desires go beyond the material to the spiritual areas of life, we find our lives are full and meaningful. There is nothing wrong with wanting material possessions — for us or for others. It is good to want to live a more spiritually-centered life, but in all circumstances a balance can bring us the greatest joy.

It wasn’t until I donned a clerical collar that I came to understand how people viewed religious leaders differently. Some were comforted by my presence while others seemed ill at ease. “Before long I realized that many had been damaged through judgment, guilt, rejection, and condemnation by a religion or by someone religious. I’m happy to report that these people do not have to languish in fear, depression, or resentment. “In Every Path Leads Home, Wayne Holmes has created a brilliant and very gentle way out of religious abuse and intolerance into peace, happiness, and personal freedom. “It is a way to heal us all. –Rev. Mr. Holmes’ words resonate way beyond the printed page—they vibrate within your heart as truth. I absolutely LOVE this book! It is the best bridge I have seen joining traditional religion, spirituality, and the spiritual nature of us all. “The integrity of the author in revealing his own story is authentic, reminding me of the humanness of all of our experiences. I felt wrapped in the arms of loving kindness throughout the whole book. I predict this book will enlighten all who read it.

One secret to contentment is to desire fewer things. When we struggle to keep everything our head wants, we end up with a lot of things. Then the problem is how to maintain, store, and use each to its fullest potential. When we don’t say no to every whim and wish, we end up with a cluttered life—and also a cluttered mind.

Give Your Pets Something to Do by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger I’m sure many of you have thought that having a day to do absolutely nothing is your idea of utter bliss. Most of us who work don’t get to do that unless we are on vacation or we’ve asked our spouse/partner to give us such a day as a gift on a holiday or our birthday. If we watch our pets throughout the day, as I am able to do as I work at home now, it seems as though that is what our pets do all day everyday – eat, sleep, lie in the sun, sleep, eat… I think you get the picture. From our perspective, we probably envy their life. What we have found over the years with our own pets, as well as our clients’, is that pets need jobs. It gives them a sense of purpose, and it allows them to give something back to us. Even cats like to do things for us, although often they don’t like us to know that is what they are up to. The history of the human and dog/cat/horse relationship originated in them providing a service to us in exchange for our protection and care. Yes, even cats had a reciprocal relationship with humans – they kept the rats and mice out of the grain in the pyramids, and in turn the Egyptians worshiped them as gods. Dogs have done a variety of jobs for us, and this is the origin of many of the breeds of dogs we have today. The same is true of horses. What happens when we bring animals into our lives as pets is that we sometimes forget that most pets, like most people, need a purpose in their lives. If they feel they do not have a role/job in the family, behavior or health issues can result. What we have done with our animals is given them in essence 2 jobs: first and foremost they have the job of being the most loving and well behaved companion animal that they can be. The second job our animals have depends on their individual abilities. Our Portuguese Podengo is a sight hound, so he is our watcher. Lukas is a sweet Basset Hound, his job is to sit with us and just love us, especially when we are tired or sad. Simba the indoor cat allows Terri to pet him at night in bed, which calms her to sleep. Diana is our hunter cat, and Sophia is our barn cat who takes care of the barn and the horses. You get the idea. We tell the animals what their jobs are, and remind them periodically. We
10
praise them when they do their job well. Our animals seems happy and less anxious as a result. What I have noticed, now that I am home most of the time during the day, is that whenever I come into the great room, our dogs acknowledge me in some way – an eye opens, a tail thumps, and often the little dog will get up and greet me. The same thing often happens with our indoor cat; if I sit down on the bed, he comes to see me. When I walk outside, usually my horse will lift her head (to see if I have a food bucket no doubt). She will walk to me, offer her muzzle to sniff me and to give me permission to touch her, and stand quietly with me for a moment before walking away. What this reinforces for me is how very central we are to our animals’ lives. When we are absent from home for long hours, our pets can become anxious, grumpy, bored, and sometimes even angry. They can become destructive for any of those reasons. In addition to giving your pets a job and praising them when they do it, we suggest the following if your pets must spend long hours without their human family. DOGS – consider getting a kong, filling the inside with peanut butter with small treats imbedded in it, and freeze it. Give it to them when you leave as a special treat. It can keep them busy for hours. If your dog is not food motivated, there are all sorts of puzzle toys that you can try with them to see what they like. A nylabone for them to chew on is another option, and can be good for their teeth. If you can, consider doggie day care at least a couple of days a week, or have someone come in to play with and perhaps walk your dog as an alternative. CATS – make sure they have cat stands and other pieces of cat furniture in their area of the house so they can climb, claw, and have a place to hide when they want to. Hang some dangling cat toys for them that move when the heat/air conditioning comes on. Put a few toys out like balls or feather toys that they can chase and bat around. For dogs and cats both, it’s important that they have a way to see outside so that they can see what’s

going on. If your dog is a chronic barker, this may not be a good option if your neighbors don’t like the barking. An alternative may be to leave the TV on a cartoon channel or a nature channel that doesn’t show violent animal behavior. The movement on the screen can keep them very busy. I have even heard of DVDs made for dogs and cats that can be played on your TV while you are gone. For horses, being able to move about, to be outside or at least see outside, and good ventilation is very important. Bottom line – give your pets something to do, especially when you are gone from home. This will help them feel less anxious and more a part of your family.

Autumn: A Time of Sacred Seclusion by Sage Woman
Fall is a season for balancing light and dark, letting go and accepting the impermanence of things. The autumn equinox marks the arrival of the autumn season, traditionally seen as a period of change leading to the dark of winter. As we watch the leaves drifting to the ground, we are reminded that nature’s cycles are mirrored in our lives. Autumn is a time for letting go and releasing things that have been a burden. Fall is the perfect time to practice getting out of the way and letting Spirit take charge of our lives. Let go, Let God/Goddess.
Sometimes the world gives us no choice, and we have to let go of something or someone. Many times we make a conscious decision that simply means it is time to stop holding on. Even when it is our choice, though, it can still be tough.
Letting go can be difficult to do initially. It doesn’t really matter if the thing we are trying to let go of isn’t even something we want or need anymore: it’s ours, we’ve grown accustomed to it, and we may have a hard time taking that last step to release it. Letting go of people can be even harder.
One of the ways I celebrate this time of the year is to create a mini-retreat for myself. During this retreat, I do the things that assist me in celebrating both endings and beginnings, releasing and letting. I pick one day that is only mine and mine alone, no social media, business, contact with friends, television or
12
On the autumn equinox, day and night are of equal length. This signals the need to balance the light and dark within us. It is the perfect time to embrace the gifts of going within the depth of the darkness to reveal what is ready to come to the light.

radio. Just me, my home, nature and maybe a book or two. This opportunity allows me to get back in touch with me, my light and my dark and prepare for the upcoming energy of the winter months. I will spend time writing in my journal, walking in nature or simply sitting outside and watching birds fly over the lake, fish jumping and leaves falling to the ground. During this special day, I rise early to watch the sunrise and end my day with the sun setting. Very few physical words will be spoken. I will light candles, burn my favorite incense and fill my home with its beautiful fragrant smell. I will eat when I’m hungry and nap when I’m tired. I will utterly let go and simply be. Stepping away from the loudness and hectic pace of our modern lives, even for just one day, helps us to simply be. We are human beings after all, not human doings. This is the time for balance. To experience balance in our outer life, we must create it from the inside. As within, so without. When we go into the quiet, we find that center point, that sense of self, we can then let it go, and seek out the deeper connections found when the self is released. This is not about going with the flow, it is about being in the flow. This is where the magical and mystical gifts of Spirit can become manifest. The freedom of letting go, opens us up to being a part of the universal flow, attached neither to light or dark, as both are one in the same. Every day there is a chance to stop, to enter into a ritual, to take a step back and simply savor the moment. When I am unable to take a full day to go into the silence, I will take an hour and make it my hour, using the time to be unplugged and tuned in. Give it a try for an hour or for a day, and see how you are refreshed, revitalized and renewed. Tis the Season. Blessings and gratitude, Sage

After going to physical therapy twice a week for two months I was still not getting much relief. I awoke another morning and found myself hardly being able to get out of bed. I then decided to go to Baker Chiropractic and Wellness.
with Dr. Brock and Dr. Baker who both told me to hang in there and they promised me with continued treatments and adjustments they could help me. I stuck with it and I am so glad I did. I feel so much better and have gotten back to my normal lifestyle! I am now getting adjusted once a week to keep my back in good shape.
When I arrived there I was in so much pain I was crying and could hardly walk. Everyone in the office was so nice and got me in to see Dr. Brock Frear right away. My scan showed that I had very bad degeneration in my neck and back. I immediately started getting therapy and adjustments 5 times a week. I also got massages 3 times a week.

Drumming to the Beat of our Hearts
by Patti Lightflower Our internal drum beats with us all lifelong. Its rhythm speeding up during moments of great joy and excitement, beating strong and hard at times when we are afraid, and slowing down to a calming steady beat when we are at rest. I have always been drawn to drums. In my youth I never thought of myself as having or playing a drum, but I always fell for the drummers in the bands. My collection of signed broken drum sticks will attest to that. The urge to get up and move to the rhythm seems to start at the heart and moves to my arms and legs and I just have to get up and move to the beat. We drum our fingers on table tops, tap the tips of our nails, without thought to the glass we are drinking from, and nod our heads to the music on the radio playing in the background, often doing so without conscious awareness. When asked if I’d like to write an article about drumming and tie it into my work as a Hand Analyst I immediately said yes. Then as I wondered how to blend the two, which should be easy, they both involve hands and rhythms. While wondering about this I received an email from a woman whose life has not been an easy one as she suffered at the hands of those that should have been loving and protecting her as a baby and child and young girl. She wondered if I could unravel the story she knew was hidden in her hands. She sent an attachment of some of her writings. Glancing through, these words caught my attention: “I hear the beating of the drums since I was a tot. It calls me. I may not know about my heritage but I always felt it.” ~ G. Storm Telling her about the synchronicity of her request, I asked her if I could include it in my article. I wondered about the tribal aspect, the connection to ancient ancestors that I feel is connected to the heart beat. Do our beating hearts that beat from birth to death carry on a rhythm started long ago. Our skin is a membrane that covers our entire body and is filled with touch sensors. Most of these
16
are concentrated in the palms of our hands and in particular the fingertips. Every cell in our body has a membrane containing within its full potential, and works in unison with other cells to create the vibes that to the eyes of the world is our unique individual selves. At the time our hands our developing in the womb so is the brain and heart. The source of the cells that form the heart is the same place where the cells stream out and form the upper limbs. Our hands and hearts have the same origins in our newly forming bodies. No wonder our hearts feel what our hands touch and our hands want to reach out for our heart’s desires. Our earth mother’s natural resonance is nearly the same as our own brain frequency. During the early space program it was discovered that being away from earth’s frequency caused the astronauts health to decline rapidly. To overcome that they added a machine that simulated the frequency in the space capsule. We must have vibes to thrive. Historically, the first drummers were women. The earliest known drummer was a priestess named Lipushiau and her instrument was a round flat frame drum played by hand like a tambourine. She was from the city of Ur over 4,000 years ago. Due to the nature of our love for rhythm, I think drum history would go back even further. Rhythm is everywhere around us. Even now in the evenings with the crickets and other insects playing their loudest before the cold weather sets in. We cannot escape our need for rhythm in our lives. You don’t have to be a professional or have lessons to enjoy playing a drum in your own private space or with friends and family. Joining with others in a drum circle offers a special gathering of connection and sharing. Each person contributes their own beat and as we play together, we come together building an energy that feels like magic as our rhythm begins to synchronize and complement each other’s. As we develop from genetic code, along with how our experiences shape us, our preferences and personalities are inscribed into our hands. Want to learn to read hands? Patti offers classes and workshops teaching the basic and advanced methods of reading hands which include how science is now able to connect our sense of touch to our emotional selves. We are Pining for Pine Nuts! Pine nuts are not nuts at all, they are edible seeds from a pine tree. For those of you that really just don’t think about pine nuts or don’t use them for cooking or salads, you may be enlightened when you find out how nutritious they really are! Pine nuts have been enjoyed since Roman times, they have nutrients similar to other nuts, but have a unique flavor packed with protein, iron, magnesium and other healthy nutrients. Research suggest that these little seeds actually may reduce heart disease because of the pinolenic acid that they contain, helping to support good cholesterol levels. Pine nuts contain lutein, a carotenoid that helps to ward off eye diseases, such as macular degeneration. Pine nuts have been regarded as a nutritious snack but they are loaded with antioxidants that are crucial in fighting off free radicals in the body.
18
A natural energy booster, pine nuts also contain fatty acids that can help you feel full because they produce high amounts of an appetite suppressing hormone. Pine nuts are delicious roasted, they can be added to a salad or to any sweet and savory dish. Some people may get an aftertaste when consuming pine nuts, it is rare, but it can leave a bitter taste in your mouth, if this seems too unpleasant, then it will go away usually after a few moments or a couple of hours. An allergy toward pine nuts can be possible just like any allergy with nuts, so if you already have nut allergies, proceed with caution, even though they are seeds. Pine nuts can be expensive, so it is best to buy them on sale whenever possible. They need to be stored in air tight containers in the refrigerator or freezer because they can go rancid very quickly.

Full of fiber and so many power packed healing properties that your body needs, these little gems are amazing! Add pine nuts for a buttery, nutty taste, especially when they are roasted. They can enhance the flavor of several dishes helping to create what would be just a normal meal turn into a wholesome elegant cuisine!

Longevity Resources
Discovering Optimal Health Naturally
Welcome to our newest feature, “Longevity Resources.” Each issue we will cover topics that will explore endless possibilities in achieving optimal health. We are honored to feature one of own past writers, Dr. Paul Fulk (1935-2014). The article written below is just one of many he had written over the years. He was a true pioneer in the field of alternative health and nutrition. The statements or content of the article in this feature is strictly to educate and inform. It is not intended to replace the care and advice of your regular physician.
SAD or Depression? Better known as winter blues. It has many titles but all of it boils down to a malfunction of a tiny little gland in the center of your skull. There are several nutrients that make this gland work. When they are lacking for one reason or another, many symptoms occur. The pineal gland is in total control of many functions in your body. Envision the pineal gland, it is the major boss in your brain that controls the whole show. But if it is asleep on the job, many of the body functions fail to work as they are supposed to. In China the pineal gland is called the “third eye” because of the major jobs it is responsible for. If it does not function, one of the symptoms is “depression.” This is a result of the hypothalamus not being told what to do. This is the computer in the brain that has many jobs to do. All but two, of the stimulating hormones are secreted by the hypothalamus. Ovaries in the female and testicles in the male do not function if they lack instruction from the hypothalamus. Then the thyroid does not do it’s job because the hypothalamus is not doing what it needs to be doing. Also the adrenal glands which sit on top of each kidney, are not up to “par” of running the show from the chin down. Without instruction there are a number of other functions that are lacking because of the malfunction of the pineal gland and the hypothalamus. We could go into a lot of detail about what happens,
20
however, it is better known as “depression”. The body functions are very sluggish, you can’t sleep and you just “feel like a dimes worth of dog meat”. This is how it was described to me by a fellow from Louisiana. In any case he felt pretty bad and just did not want to do anything. Getting out of bed every day was a challenge. The pineal gland is also responsible for your circadian rhythms that change as you travel through time zones across the country. The SAD syndrome or seasonal effective disease as it is called, is prevalent during the entire year. Specifically in the winter season when days are short and the atmospheric pressures are low (when it snows) are peak months for SAD occurrences. This pea-sized organ regulates and controls the production of melatonin which is your sleep inducer. The pineal gland needs lithium plus tryptophan which is an amino acid in order to function. Did you ever notice that after eating turkey on thanksgiving, you get very sleepy? It is because turkey has a abundant amount of tryptophan in the meat. A vitamin D supplement and a pineal concentrate supplement may help with these symptoms. People who suffer from this disorder, until now, have only had to rely on antidepressant drugs. Most importantly is the fact that the pineal gland has some direct connections that affect the adrenal glands and the gonads, (testicle and ovaries). In the medical text books very little is described about the function of the pineal gland except that it has to do with skin color and gonadal function. But I will have you to understand that this little pea size organ is very important and I would call it the “master glands”, instead of the pituitary gland. There are over 25 million people in the US that are suffering from depression and many of them are not aware that they are depressed. This condition presents itself with fatigue, self neglect, insomnia, deep sadness, and lack of interest in surroundings. If drug oriented medical treatment fails and if the

psychiatrist’s couch can’t do much to help, My hope is that the supplements listed in this article under supervision of their personal Doctor will help people feel a renewed sense of vitality and will feel energized once again. It may be possible to enjoy the winter months ahead instead of experiencing sadness. Copyright 2013 Paul F. Fulk D.C.,F.A.S.A
Lofittle-Known Causes Ongoing Financial Distress
Part 3 of a Series by Brian Eastman In our first article Bob said, “I’ve always struggled to have enough money, I’ve attended many prosperity classes. I do the work and say the affirmations. But every time I start to get ahead, something still goes wrong.” * Bob remained stuck because of hidden damage passed down from his Family Ancestors. The first two articles explored four of nine little-known root causes of financial distress: Family Ancestor experiences, broken father relationships, broken mother relationships, and money allergies. In this article we will explore another root cause. Little-Known Root Cause 5. Seeking Love by Being in Financial Distress Even infants know when they are not receiving the nurturing love they need. The experience of growing up without receiving the nurturing love they need and want stays with them for the rest of their lives. The experience of lovelessness cuts swaths of damage throughout their childhood, teen and adult lives. For instance, think of people you know who are always desperately “looking for love in all the wrong places.” A less visible example might be the person who seems

always to live in financial straits. In my LIIFT work, I often encounter financially-stressed clients who hold a toxic Belief Statement like, If I am in financial trouble, maybe God will love me. I have also encountered clients with similar statements involving mother, father, and “they.” For these clients, the Belief Statement might read, If I am in financial trouble, maybe mother will help me, and then I will feel loved. The Belief Statement will remain active, and the client’s life will reflect it, even though his mother may have been dead for years. A toxic belief statement can also be something like, Since no one loves me, I am undeserving of having abundant money. Yes, the statement does not make sense on a rational level. But the statement was created and internalized by a young child working with his or her limited life experience, not someone working with a rational adult brain. How to Remove or Heal this Root Cause There are several ways clients can heal by removing the inappropriate Belief Statements in their Internal Operating Software. Transactional Analysis counselors would use Re-Parenting techniques to do this. Hypnosis with a life-issue hypnotherapist can do the trick. A LIIFT client can quickly rewrite the toxic Belief Statements into positive ones, which then changes the client’s life patterns toward the positive. Other healing modalities such as Neuro Modulation Technique, Psych-K and traditional psychotherapy might also be effective when working with a capable practitioner. * Names and situations have been modified to protect privacy. Gare luten-Free Diets Beneficial for Many by Dr. Joeseph Mercola Gluten-Free Diets Are Beneficial for Many — Not Just Those With Celiac Disease In recent years, the benefits of a gluten-free diet have become widely recognized and, according to recent research, people are embracing gluten-free in ever-growing numbers, even though the number of Americans diagnosed with celiac disease has not increased since 2009.1,2,3,4 In 2009, an estimated 0.5 percent of Americans were on a gluten-free diet. By 2014, that number had more than tripled, to 1.69 percent. Meanwhile, the number of people diagnosed with celiac disease remained fairly steady, declining only slightly, from 0.7 percent to 0.58 percent. Gluten-free diets are particularly popular among Caucasian women and younger adults between the ages of 20 and 39 — many of whom do it simply because it makes them feel better. It’s well worth noting though that while gluten-free has many advantages, just because a food is glutenfree does not automatically make it healthy. There are plenty of gluten-free junk foods out there.
by celebrity endorsements and an increasing number of books linking wheat and gluten to a wide range of health problems, from gut dysfunction and allergies to neurological diseases and autoimmune problems. This includes The New York Times Best Seller, “Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar; Your Brain’s Silent Killer,” written by Dr. David Perlmutter, a neurologist, in which he reveals how processed grains contribute to dementia. My own book on this subject, “The No-Grain Diet,” was published in 2003. While still in medical practice, I recommended eliminating gluten as a first line intervention before I would further fine-tune a patient’s diet to address their specific health problems. As the title of my now 13-year-old book indicates, I believe most everyone would benefit from avoiding all grains, not just gluten, as doing so well help you burn fat much better. Plus, healthy fat is a far cleaner and more efficient fuel for your body. Despite the prevailing skepticism, studies are now confirming that many people do indeed experience adverse reactions to gluten even if they test negative for celiac disease. This suggests gluten-sensitivity is a real problem,6 and that gluten-free diets may benefit many — not just those with celiac.
Just because a food is gluten free doesn’t make it a health food, just as a food sold at Whole Foods does not make it a health food. There are plenty of lousy fake foods in both categories.
Celiac Disease Versus Wheat Allergy and Gluten-Intolerance
For most people, drastically cutting down on your net carbs (total carbs minus fiber) is the key to optimal health. This includes but is not limited to grains (not just wheat, as all grains will spike your insulin levels and contribute to insulin and leptin resistance).
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder. People with celiac suffer severe gastrointestinal (GI) reactions and malabsorption of nutrients in response to gluten found in wheat and other grains, and a strict 100 percent gluten-free diet is critical for these people.
Doing this will help your body burn fat rather than carbs as its primary fuel, which helps optimize your mitochondrial function and boost weight loss.
Celiac disease is typically diagnosed by measuring the presence of autoantibodies such as transglutaminase 2 (TG2), which is thought to be the most sensitive marker for celiac.
Is Going Gluten-Free a Pointless Fad?
Many others have wheat allergy or some level of gluten intolerance or sensitivity, and fare better on a glutenfree diet even if they don’t have celiac disease. If you’re
Some doctors dismiss gluten-free as a mere fad,5 fueled

allergic to wheat, consuming it will result in an immune reaction that can be diagnosed by measuring antibodies called IgE and/or other immune system markers. Food intolerances, on the other hand, are typically related to a lack of a specific enzyme to break down the food in question. Food intolerances tend to generate fewer symptoms that are slower in onset, and can therefore be more difficult to diagnose. Diarrhea or constipation, bloating, headache, anxiety and fatigue are common symptoms of a food intolerance, but may not appear until hours or even days afterward. Gluten sensitivity IS real though, researchers say, and may affect up to 6 percent of the population. Gluten Sensitivity May Affect a Majority of People Gluten is a protein made up of glutenin and gliadin molecules, which in the presence of water form an elastic bond. Gluten can be found in grains other than wheat, including rye, barley, oats and spelt. Gluten can also hide in processed foods under a variety of names, including but not limited to11 malts, starches, hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP), texturized vegetable protein (TVP) and natural flavoring. If you do a search of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, you will find that gluten-containing grains have been linked to dozens of adverse health effects12 and adverse modes of toxicity. Topping this list is neurotoxicity, and in his book, “Grain Brain,” Perlmutter specifically looked at the neurological impact of gluten (wheat) and casein (dairy) on both our brain and autoimmune diseases. He also believes gluten sensitivity may be involved in most chronic diseases, because of how gluten affects your immune system.
zonulin in the intestine in response to gluten. This protein, found in wheat, barley and rye, makes your gut more permeable, which allows proteins to get into your bloodstream. This sensitizes your immune system and promotes inflammation and autoimmunity. In the press release announcing the publication of his new book, “Gluten Freedom,” Fasano said:14 “We’ve shown now that gluten sensitivity actually exists. It’s moved from a nebulous condition that many physicians dismissed to a distinctly identifiable condition that’s quite different than celiac disease. Gluten sensitivity affects six to seven times more people than celiac disease.” Mercola, J. “Gluten-Free Diets Are Beneficial for Many — Not Just Those With Celiac Disease” Retrieved September 21, 2016, from http://articles.mercola.com/ sites/articles/archive/2016/09/21/gluten-sensitivityceliac-disease.aspx ____________________ 1 JAMA Internal Medicine September 6, 2016 [Epub ahead of print] 2 Reuters September 6, 2016 3 WebMD.com September 6, 2016 4 Huffington Post September 8, 2016 5 Huffington Post September 7, 2016 6 Mother Nature Network September 8, 2016 11 Celiac.com, Unsafe Gluten-Free Food List 12 PubMed National Library of Medicine. AThe n Apple a Day? How about Six? Apple Diet in the Cayce Readings by Josephine Adamson, MD, MPH, CMT
For more than 20 individuals, the Cayce health readings recommended the “Apple Diet” as a threeday cleansing. The Apple Diet was a modified fast where one eats nothing but apples for three days and drinks only black coffee and water. One reading advocated eating at least five or six apples a day.
the ones ripening early in the growing season. Though most of these American heirloom apple types are hard to find, Jonathan and Delicious varieties are available in many large grocery stores. Those apples we now label as chemical-free, “organic,” are preferred. Even back in Cayce’s day, there were concerns about artificially ripened and preserved fruit. Many of our supermarket apples come from orchards as far away as New Zealand! Apples grown as close to the consumer as possible are the best choices.
Apples of the “jenneting” variety were specified in the Apple Diet readings including Jonathan, Black Arkansas, Red and Golden Delicious, Oregon Red, Sheepnose, and Arkansas Russet. Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary traces the derivation of the word “jenneting’ to an old French festival of St. John’s Day on June 24. These apple varieties were
Additional instructions appeared in another reading: “Drink plenty of water, and follow the three-day diet with the big dose of Olive Oil.” (Edgar Cayce Reading 1409-9) The doses recommended varied from 2-3 teaspoons (3673-1) to two tablespoons (780-12) to as much as one-half a teacup (6 oz) which would be 6 tablespoons (1622-1).
Many people choose to fast for spiritual and/or health reasons. For some it offers a time of focus and reflection. For others it’s a kick-start for changing eating habits and losing weight.
24
Oct / Nov 2016
For some individuals the readings suggested that the person repeat the Apple Diet once a month for 2-3 months. For others the readings suggested a quarterly Apple Diet. In all cases, the readings counseled that the Apple Diet would be effective: “This is to change the activity through the whole alimentary canal.” (3673-1)
Sometimes, the short term effect of detoxification is that you will feel worse. This is because toxins that have settled into the tissues are being drawn out into the circulation for elimination.
Instead of choosing a commercially-produced modified fast, the Cayce readings offer us a natural and holistic Apple Diet.
There was an alternative option for those on an oil-restricted regimen. This one recommended that for four to five days: in the morning, drink only citrus fruit juices slowly; for lunch eat only raw vegetables (such as lettuce, celery, radishes, mustard, spinach, cabbage, tomato, pepper, onion) if desired, a dressing such as mayonnaise (1621-1) or olive oil and apple cider vinegar may be used; and in the evening eat only raw apples.
Please consult with a qualified health care professional before starting any fast or new diet program.

She joined A.R.E. as part of the organization’s renewed focus on the health information, one of the most important, enduring legacies from the Edgar Cayce readings.
Additional Information: While the diet was never suggested for weight loss, it was recommended for its internal cleansing action and ability to remove toxic forces from the digestive system. Cayce told one man that “three days of raw apples only and then olive oil and we will cleanse all toxic forces from any system.” The olive oil is to stimulate the gall bladder to release bile into the intestinal tract to enhance eliminations through the bowel.

Hummingbird Passage It will be one year next month when my Mom crossed over, I still cannot believe she is gone. Not a day goes by that I do not think about her, but I know her spirit is close by. I remember standing in her kitchen that she loved so much, I was faced with the daunting task of gathering her personal belongings she left behind, it seemed very sad to me to look at the things that she treasured, and one of the things she admired were hummingbirds, when I opened some of her cupboards I found what seemed like dozens of hummingbird feeders. I knew of her love of watching these tiny birds in awe as she would have her tea and look out her window. The feeders seem to be everywhere, some new, old, big, small and even tiny. As I walked through the house, I started noticing hummingbird wind chimes, vases, glass hummingbirds and ceramic statues of these precious birds. The memory of this stayed with me and I took a few feeders home intending to use them but have not yet. As days turned into months, I have thought of my Mom quite often and at times I would think of her while sitting at my computer. One day quite to my
26
surprise, I looked out of the window, a hummingbird showed up and flew to the middle of my window suspended in flight looking right in at my family and I. We were delighted and could not believe how long this tiny creature stayed in the same place just staring into our room! We all froze as this bird brought great joy to all of us in the short precious time it stayed in front of the window and then flew off. Of course I did not think about it again until it happened a second time and a third! I did not even make the connection until something else happened that was extraordinary one day. My brother called and I stepped outside with my cell phone as we started talking about Mom and how we missed her, speaking of her house and getting it ready to sell. As I was talking a hummingbird flew within inches to my face, and stayed in flight until I was so excited and became too loud that it flew over to a nearby shrub. I described to my brother what was happening and we both concluded that it was our Mom’s spirit letting us know she is with us! Never had I experienced anything quite so amazing as a hummingbird getting up to my face so close that I finally realized it was a sign. I just cannot believe it took me so long to figure it out. All of us do indeed get caught up in every day stress and daily routines that when something happens so out of the blue and a loved one that has passed is trying to send us a sign or reach us we can overlook it easily until it is truly so obvious it cannot be ignored. Some could say, it was just a coincidence, that’s okay, everyone has the right to their opinions, but I know in my heart that my Mom has found a way to let me know she is near and her spirit lives on. I miss her every single day and I am grateful that now I am aware and I am paying closer attention of the gifts she is sending my way. It touches my heart and helps guide me through the healing process of grief. There is a special closeness I feel now with my Mom and a sense of peace, which to me is one of the most precious things on earth. –J.P.
