The Food Allergy Research & Education Center, (FARE) has been created for kids who suffer from food allergies and cannot consume nuts or various other foods that candy could contain. A real health concern for parents are the kids that go trick or treating on Halloween with food allergies. The Teal Pumpkin Project suggest that a family displays a teal blue pumpkin or a poster that will let families know that non food items will be available to kids who suffer with allergies. It is good to know that there is support for families who want their kids to enjoy a traditional night of trick or treating. There seems to be more demand for non food items to hand out on Halloween night or to have available for parties. Many companies are offering fun alternatives instead of candy.

Happy Halloween!
The Simplicity of Appreciation by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger
Animals teach us so many things simply by being who they are. We’ve written about this in various contexts over the years. Today we would like to share some thoughts about what animals can teach us about appreciation, balance and happy living. We have often talked about how animals are fully present in whatever they are doing or being. One minute they can be thoroughly enjoying a nap in a sunny spot in the great room. The next minute, at the sound of the door opening, they are flinging themselves at you in utter joyous celebration that you are home. How do they do this? I personally think it has everything to do with animals thoroughly experiencing each moment. They can fully experience the nap in the sun, luxuriating in the warmth and the life giving light, the soft dog bed or rug beneath them, the companionship of other dogs near them, the breeze coming through the open window. That is all
4
that matters to them in that moment – those simple pleasures. They are content with the abundance of the moment because they keep it that simple. Of course, animals do have moments where they are focused on what they want or do not want. For example, if our older dog Lukas thinks it is time to eat, he will simply go and sit in the kitchen and wait for us to get with the program. The closer it gets to his normal feeding time, the more he sincerely reminds us with little whines and soulful eyes. He is still in the moment, but he also wants something to happen IN that moment as well. When we get out a suitcase, our dogs will begin to look worried, because they are so focused on what suitcase MEANS (mom or moms are leaving them), that is what they fully experience in that moment – the memory of us leaving before. The point we are making here is this: animals have,
Oct / Nov 2017
in our opinion, a much greater capacity to experience and appreciate the abundance in their life than we do. The reason why is that they simply immerse themselves in the experience of each moment, so they in effect have the opportunity to feel that abundance, to savor it. They are content with simple things such as sunlight, a warm soft bed or couch, fragrant grass to roll in, a succulent bit of meat in their kibble, a drink of cool water, a human lap to sit on, the amazing smells that come to them on a windy day. If you live with or around animals, take a moment and observe them and you’ll see what I mean. The other day I went over to the barn to say hello to my horse. What I observed was her standing on the bank of the creek, her butt up in the air, and her front feet in the water. She was fishing something out of the water with her mouth, and shaking it up and down. I was intrigued. What she was doing was fishing out floating may apples, shaking them up and down to open up the skin, and then eating the inside fruit. She was having great fun doing this, I could tell, and she was thoroughly enjoying the treat. We, on the other hand, miss the simple abundance all around us more often than not. When was the last time we allowed ourselves to fully experience a beautiful sunset or sunrise … not only the beautiful colors but also the coolness of the air, the sounds of the insects and birds, the smell of newly mown grass… you get the idea. We stop, we look, we say “oh wow look at those colors” and then off we go to the next thing we have to do. The last time you had a really good meal, did you really stop and taste each mouthful, really appreciate all the flavors that your mouth was enjoying? When was the last time you allowed yourself to just – STOP – and observe what is around you with all of your senses? There is a lot of discussion these days about “mindfulness”. I think one of the key components of mindfulness is stillness for just a moment, to allow yourself to be fully present. It’s a really hard thing to do for some of us, because we are losing our ability to focus on one thing at a time. I think this is robbing us of being able to fully acknowledge and appreciate the abundance all around us. Since I work from home, I try to take a short break each morning and do 5 minutes of simple yoga. If you watch dogs, cats, and horses – they do some very
Infinity
basic yoga stretch moves. Dogs for example naturally do “downward facing dog” , “cat back”, and “cobra”. One day when our dog Beau got up he stretched and I said “Yoga Beau” in a very fun voice. I then got down on the floor and did child pose. He thought that was very curious. Over time, he has learned that when I say “Yoga Beau” we are going to take a break and I am going to get on the floor with him and we are going to do our version of yoga together. This very simple thing – getting on the floor with my dog and doing a little yoga with him – is taking a break and just being present. I feel so much more energized and positive after that 5 minutes. The final piece of this issue’s theme is balance; striving to achieve balance in our lives. I don’t think balance is something that one can achieve necessarily. Rather, like our animals, it is something that happens when we allow ourselves to be fully present in a given moment, to experience all that is around us… the wonderful and not so wonderful things that all together define a given moment in our lives. If the present moment is difficult, the next moment may or may not be. If I feel angry right now, I can trust that if I allow it, that emotion will eventually fade away. Animals, by virtue of being present in the moment instead of thinking about what happened yesterday and what might happen tomorrow, achieve balance through the transitory nature of the present moment. We have so very much to learn about life from observing the animals around us. Enjoy the beautiful fall weather… go for a roll in the leaves with your dog or your kids … or by yourself if you dare!

by Mike Perry Do you wonder how to leverage the power of the internet to grow your business? Does this sound familiar, oh man I forgot to link my Facebook to my website? What is SEO, for that matter how do I find keywords to use? We know the hassle first hand of running a business in the New Age industry. In the past, we had opened and operated a small book store called Mind (e) d of Earth Books and Gifts. We were eager to open and start making money as any business is. Boy did we learn and quick that we didn’t have a clue what to do. That is how we created Eleadora. Tiffany and Mike spent 5 years learning to grow a business. We learned to build a website that speaks to our target market and in turn creates sales. Then we learned to drive traffic from our social media channels. It has been a wild ride, one with many lessons. Some that we could have avoided. But if they were, we may not be able to share with these three important tips with you. To make your website and social media channels stand apart from your competition. Tips 1. A theme will help people connect with your brand and business. You can have a theme every day of the week. Like Motivational Monday. Tip Tuesday, Wisdom Wednesday throw back Thursday. Fun Friday. Themes help you to connect with your audience. People buy from people!!! 2. Images speak louder than words. A post on your website I.E. Blog or on your social media channels should have an image that relates to your content. An easy way to make professional images for your posts is Canva. Pssst Pro tip you can find free stock images here https://pixabay.com/ Check out our how to video on eleadoradesigns.com 3. Keywords!!!!! Looking for keywords can be like looking for a needle in a hay stack. If you don’t know where to look. Check out Google keyword planner. See it in action at eleadoradesigns.com.

The Spiritual Path by Wayne Holmes Religion is a means to an end. Our goal is not necessarily to be religious, but to reach our final destination. I think of that final destination as going Home. Meister Eckhart said, “God is at home, it’s we who have gone out for a walk. Everyone is on a spiritual path whether they realize it or not, and that path leads us to whatever waits for us after this mortal life. Different religions claim to know what “Home is like, and even have elaborate descriptions. But, honestly, we won’t know until we get there.

It wasn’t until I donned a clerical collar that I came to understand how people viewed religious leaders differently. Some were comforted by my presence while others seemed ill at ease. “Before long I realized that many had been damaged through judgment, guilt, rejection, and condemnation by a religion or by someone religious. I’m happy to report that these people do not have to languish in fear, depression, or resentment. “In Every Path Leads Home, Wayne Holmes has created a brilliant and very gentle way out of religious abuse and intolerance into peace, happiness, and personal freedom. “It is a way to heal us all. –Rev. Mr. Holmes’ words resonate way beyond the printed page—they vibrate within your heart as truth. I absolutely LOVE this book! It is the best bridge I have seen joining traditional religion, spirituality, and the spiritual nature of us all. “The integrity of the author in revealing his own story is authentic, reminding me of the humanness of all of our experiences. I felt wrapped in the arms of loving kindness throughout the whole book. I predict this book will enlighten all who read it.

Wayne Holmes’ Every Path Leads Home is a beautiful book of acceptance. Our lives on this plane of existence are of short duration, and we are all “headed home. Different faith experiences define “home differently, and each suggests a path or paths. For anyone who has been abused by the supposed rules and strictures of a church or congregation or pastor, for anyone who has come to see religion not as a faith experience but rather as a set of ironclad rules, for anyone who has grown weary of the struggle to find God by whatever name: Every Path Leads Home is a must-read.
Every Path Leads Home:
Part of the process of going Home is to discard any baggage that would impede our progress. We strip away material things by not clinging to them. We may use them, but we always understand that we own nothing (no-thing), or else we are owned by those things. We discard negative emotions that create discord and pull us away from love. Our major pursuit is love. Everything that happens along the journey has the potential to help us return to the pure love of The Divine. Even “ strife, discord, and fights have the potential to lead us further down the spiritual path. It all depends“ on how we respond to the situations that would seem to impede us, and also on how well we learn the lessons that are inherent in each encounter.
Wayne Holmes’ Set Your Course shares six months of reflections that will give readers a path to spiritual freedom and help them connect to their soul and inner spirit. Not only does it provide healing from past religious abuse, but also abuse of nearly any form, and beyond that, it provides a path towards taking solid control of one’s religious and spiritual journey.

Afor sk Sage Woman: Spiritual Advice the Real World by Sage Woman Dear Sage Woman, I have recently been reading about crystals and gemstones and how their energy can be used in daily life. Would you share how you use them in your life? Thank you, Beverly M. _____________ Namaste Beverly, Crystals, gemstones and rocks are not only part of earth energy, they are energy themselves. Spirit is the driving force behind the qualities of natural things – spirit is the energy! Crystals amplify energy. Personally, I use crystals every day. This includes during my readings and healing sessions, as I find that crystals help me focus. I use them for sleep, protection and to enhance my physical health and healing.
8
Science and technology also incorporate crystals and gemstones. These amplifiers and transmitters of energy, have been used in sound technology for decades. Quartz crystals maintain many practical applications in technology as well. They are used in recorders, and for many years, watches. I use crystals in many different ways. I will wear some as jewelry, specifically choosing the stone that represents what I am either focused on, or wanting to work towards, that day. I will carry a crystal or stone with me all day in a pocket or my purse. I’ve been known to sleep with them close by or under my pillow, depending on what healing properties I call in during sleep. Are you wanting an energy boost? Need assistance in grounding or are you looking for a manifestation tool? For whatever your purpose, there is a healing stone. No gemstone has a singular purpose, instead, multiple healing qualities are housed within one stone. As always, it is important to trust your intuition

when choosing a crystal or a stone. They will speak to you. Allow your self to be drawn by the ones that call to you. We can all use an energy boost from time to time. My two favorites are opal and topaz. For a powerful grounding stone that helps root you into place, choose a bloodstone or smoky quartz. Sapphire and onyx are quite magical in manifestation work. They help focus on what we truly want. I use amethyst and lapis when connecting to my power source, the angels and my spirit guides during mediation. Use the rose quartz to help attract love, assist you in learning how to love yourself, or to become more compassionate with others. Some other favorites are the quartz rocks I pull out of the lake where I live in Texas. After always asking permission to take them, I set them out in the moonlight to charge their energy. I use these during chakra balancing sessions and intuitive readings with clients. They have proven holders of ancient memories and messages, greatly energizing the user’s healing process. I hope this information has been helpful and that you enjoy your ongoing relationship with the energies these amazing stones hold. Blessings and gratitude, Sage

How Can Conscious Parents Create
and Keep Life Balance with Children? by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE
In your life B.C., Before Children, it seemed easier to get and stay in balance. You could get plenty of sleep, make time for self-care, and meditate every day, if you wanted. Most of the time, you felt grounded and centered, in the present moment, and in a space of calm inner peace. As a conscious parent, you still have good intentions, but creating and keeping balance seems to take more effort and it feels like you are always one step behind. For example, most mornings go like this: You wake up tired, because you stayed up late for some me-time and got up extra early to meditate. As you sit there, you either doze off or your mind runs through the list of all you have to do. You’d like to work out, but get interrupted so often you give up and resolve to just take the stairs and do squats and stretches throughout the day. After getting kids on the bus, you work hard all day at the office or at home with the little ones, barely taking breaks. After school, you drive each child to their after-school activities. Dinner is rushed and bedtime is too chaotic and late to accommodate calming, snuggly pillow talk. You wouldn’t trade your children or your life, but do feel guilty that you aren’t more calm, centered and present. You don’t want to be one of those perfect super-hero parents, or let your kids run wild while you zone out in the lotus position! You just want to live a more balanced life with children. Well you can, and the first step is to get into the “Balanced” zone with your parenting style. A parenting “style,” is your overall way of parenting, based on your belief system about what parents are “supposed” to do and be, which then drives your decisions, thoughts, words, and actions. Over the past 75 years, as recently as 2016, parenting styles research has identified five parenting styles
10
and their predictable outcomes. Two are controlling, two are permissive, and the one that gets exclusively positive long-term results is what The Parent’s Toolshop® has called the “Balanced” parenting style for over 25 years. Human evolution has not changed much in that time. Children still go through the same developmental stages, in the same order, from simple to complex, in eight domains (i.e. cognitive, emotional, social, etc.) at their own rate and style. Still, the most important factor in their development is having involved, responsive parents. So it’s wise to avoid being too hands-on, controlling and interfering and too hands-off, chanting, “All they need is love,” and leaving children to “figure things out for themselves,” with too little guidance, boundaries, or structure. The Balanced parenting style is a holistic, integrated approach that uses common sense logic, emotional intelligence and intuition to parent. For example, Balanced parents: • Provide love, guidance and support, without taking over or over-controlling. • Respond to children’s needs without coddling, spoiling, or over-indulging. • Build self-esteem, not egotism or people pleasers, and engage cooperation, by fostering self-motivation, without bribes, stickers or threats. • Offer choices to children within bottom-line limits, so they don’t become spoiled or demanding. • Teach children skills and provide some freedom, within structure and routines, so children can practice the skills safely and feel secure having consistency. • Acknowledge children’s feelings and ask openended questions, so children learn how to solve their own problems and make decisions responsibly. • Understand the cause of misbehavior, show children
Oct / Nov 2017
how to meet their needs through positive behavior, and use discipline not punishment. •… And much more. Within the Balanced parenting style, you can also following these simple, practical tips for making day-to-day life with children more balanced and enjoyable: • Use good time management skills, to create flexible structure in your family routines that allow for down time, family time, and snuggle time. • Limit extra-curricular activities to only two per season, and rotate them throughout the year. • Limit screen time to no more than an hour a day, especially for children ages 2-5, or it starts literally rewiring and even damaging the developing brain. Interact with each other instead.
About the Author: Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE, is the author of The Parent’s Toolshop® and CEO of Relationship Toolshop® International Training Institute, LLC, where she oversees an international network of Toolshop® trainers. She has 30 years’ experience training over 50,000 parents and family professionals worldwide. She’s a toprated speaker and parenting expert to the media worldwide, including serving as the Co-Producer and Parenting Expert for the Emmy-nominated Ident-aKid television series. She has dozens of multimedia resources that support and educate parents and other adults who live or work with children. You can find them at her award-winning website, www. ParentsToolshop.com.
• Learn stress-reduction techniques you can use almost anywhere, anytime, such as: – Deep diaphragmatic breathing to get oxygen to your brain, calm down and think clearly. – Grounding techniques you can do while sitting, waiting, or even at a traffic light. – Centering and chakra-opening energy techniques, so all you have to do is look up and hook up to Source in a matter of seconds. You can be a Balanced parent, in every sense of the word, by taking action on your intentions and learning the beliefs and skills that are part of that parenting style. Although love may come naturally, these skills are learned and, unfortunately, most parents (and even family professionals) don’t learn them in their family of origin. So learn more about the healthy parenting practices associated with being a conscious Balanced parent with the resources listed below.

BYou e the Change Want to See by Cynthia, White Flower
Look around you. The picture is being painted. You are in this picture. The transformation has begun. The falling leaves remind us that change is imminent. Where it ends depends upon what you put into it. Now is the time to transform your life. You are being offered clues as to what is actual, no matter how hard they may be to believe. To second guess yourself is to deny the Divine within you. As the golden light dominates autumn’s portrayal of the season, it reminds us that “truth” is necessary. Matthew: 7:7 instructs us to “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” The choice is made clear for our landscape. It is the discovery of truth. The harvest has blessed us, and that which is no longer needed fades away. Autumn is the season
12
of “letting go.” As the leaves boldly reflect the new direction their lives must take, we are being shown that it is time to free ourselves from the system that dominates. We are reminded to let go of that which has served its time. The revolution has begun. You are being called to participate. This reformation requires us to ask ourselves how we feel about what the world has become, and to begin our road to the change that we want to see. The charcoal of negativity can give way to warm fall colors of mixed media, as in water and oil paints in one painting. We must choose to end the descent. As in the painting, there is room for diversity. It is mandatory that we choose what is really important instead of the distractions we are fed by politics, media and past ideologies. The golden light that dominates in the trees’ pallet reflects illumination. This is the
Oct / Nov 2017
color of the crown chakra, and the season of wisdom, understanding and judgement that reminds us that we do have power. We can use our power together. If you will, sit quietly and take three deep breaths. Now say, “I AM at One with the Divine within me.” Say it two more times, feeling it within your heart. Now visualize a globe of the Earth in front of you. Along with your Divine Self say “I AM the Golden Light” three times. Now project that golden light from the top of your head and the tips of your fingers towards that globe. See the golden light surrounding and filling the Earth. Hold that light there. Give the light some commands. “The Divine in me fills the world with love and light. The Divine in me fills the world with healing. The Divine in me fills the planet with truth, revealing all that is less than the light to come forth. The Divine in me now commands that we are all free from the slavery of the system that requires money and devalues life. The Divine in me sees the world as my family.” Let us elevate our world together and daily as we take part in this revolution! The light grows shorter with the days and reminds us to keep it burning within ourselves. We are love. We are light. We have only to realize and feel it. Let’s sit in the sunlight daily. Let’s feel its radiance and see ourselves as a part of its golden brilliance. Feel it fill your mind. Feel it fill your heart. Say, “I AM the light behind the light filling myself with light.” Bask, as the golden time of the year reminds us that we are golden too. As the season presents us with time to contemplate, and to do research, we can rediscover our true foundation. Gold is a magnificent color on the pallet, it is the color of knowledge. Let us seek intelligence instead of following the system that is now obsolete.

HBring ow the Universal Laws Prosperity Into Our Lives by Jennie E. Taylor For the last several years, I have made a concerted effort to work with the laws of the universe as advised in the Edgar Cayce readings. More recently, I’ve also tried to change my consciousness from one of lack to one of prosperity-realizing that there is enough prosperity in the world for everyone; in fact, more than enough! And if I can apply a positive attitude toward prosperity, perhaps I can attract more of it into my life. Not for selfish reasons, but just acknowledging that there’s nothing wrong or negative about money—it’s really all about how we use it. And I can state that it is working. I know from the Edgar Cayce readings that mind is the builder (“thoughts are things”) and that our attitudes and emotions can affect more than just our happiness. In fact, what the Cayce readings stated about the effects of attitudes and emotions on our health has been confirmed by modern science as well. As I learn from the readings and from other kindred materials, the energy you put forth is returned back to you--much like cause and effect. Cayce put it this way: “For, to have friends, show thyself friendly; to have love, give love to others; to have patience, manifest same in thine own relationships; like begets like.” (2905-3) Just last week, I was listening to National Public Radio (NPR) on my ride in to work, when I heard a story about a homeless man that reminded me of the universal laws and how they apply to prosperity. (Shapiro, Joseph, May 5, 2016, Colorado Springs Will Stop Jailing People Too Poor To Pay Court Fines, NPR.org) The story discussed a change in the practice of the Colorado Springs, Colo., court system, which had been imprisoning people who couldn’t pay their court fines. That action, which was judged unconstitutional and likened to the debtors’ prisons that were done away with in the 1800s, resulted in the city itself being fined and asked to make payments to the
14
people it had wrongly jailed. The ACLU of Colorado discovered nearly 800 cases where people had gone to jail in Colorado Springs when they couldn’t pay their tickets for minor violations, and one of those people was Shawn Hardman, aka, Q-Tip. Q-Tip, a homeless man who claims he is not a panhandler but a “flyer” (a term used for someone who stands and holds a sign—an action covered within the laws of “free speech”), was nevertheless jailed for panhandling and then being unable to pay his fines for what ended up being a total of 90 days within just one year. But instead of feeling anger over his arrests, Q-Tip’s response was gratitude—after all, being in jail was better than being on the street during a Colorado winter, and it came with other perks too, in the form of three square meals a day. Besides Q-Tip’s positive attitude, I was also struck by the content of the signs he held. This is how he described them: “My sign always said, ‘Have a beautiful day. God Bless You…’ “And I always put my famous logo: ‘TLA. Q-Tip.’ It stands for ‘True Love Always.’” When the Edgar Cayce readings speak of universal laws, they often mention how our own thoughts and actions bring similar energy into our lives, such as with this quote “For, there are universal and spiritual laws that are a part of the self as well as of the universal consciousness. or, like begets like in every phase of material, mental and spiritual experience.” (2560-1) When another reading recipient asked about reaching his full potential, he received this advice from the sleeping Cayce, stating that one must first know their ideal and that harmony and peace and prosperity “are one” if bound by love: “First, know what is thy ideal—spiritually, mentally, materially. Know they must be dependent one upon the other… just as the adherence to those principles interpreted in the material relationships brings harmony and peace and prosperity. For, these are one-if they are bound together in brotherly love.” (2809-1)
Oct / Nov 2017
When I hear Q-Tip’s messages of love, I have a pretty good idea of what his ideal may be. And when Q-Tip meets adversity with gratitude, I believe the energy he is sending out exudes positivity. If one believes in the law of attraction, the energy of love and gratitude sent by Q-Tip and his flying signs were creating and attracting that same energy right back to him. If we examine this story further, we can also see how the negative actions of Colorado Springs resulted in a loss of “prosperity” to that city. But perhaps their restitutions—payments to those who were wronged— will bring more prosperity for the city in the future. As for Q-Tip, he will receive about $11,000 from the settlement ($125 for each day he was wrongly held in jail). He says he’s going to use it for a place to live and to advocate for homeless people. I’m not a bit surprised.

Holy Shiitake!
Mushrooms with Amazing Benefits
The Shiitake mushroom still grows wild and they are famous for their rich and smokey flavor. These particular mushrooms fall into the fungus category, and the health properties that they contain have been discovered and used as medicine over the centuries. Compared with other mushrooms, shiitakes have 10 times more flavor. They contain a high amount of copper, researchers say that most people do not consume enough copper in their diets. Copper deficiency can be a factor in coronary heart disease development. Shiitake mushrooms contain compounds that have an ability to fight inflammation, bad bacteria, viruses and even fungus. They can provide energy because they are loaded with B vitamins. These little gems contain an antifungal protein called,
16
Lentinan, one study found this protein to slow the development of tumors and protect the liver. Shiitakes also provide cancer preventive properties. It is best to look for the organic shiitake mushrooms to ensure the finest quality. They can be used in cooking when purchased dried as well. It is very important to store shiitake mushrooms properly to keep them fresh. One method is to store them in a brown paper bag, write the date on the outside and they can last up to 5 to 7 days in the refrigerator. Another way to store these mushrooms is to choose the dried variety, seal them in a glass container and freeze them. They will keep up to 7 to 12 months. There are many ways to enjoy mushrooms, sauteing in

butter with some fresh parsley is a simple and elegant way or they can be added to many dishes for an exotic flavor to spice up a main entree. However they are added to your diet, one of the rewards of consuming this amazing healthy food is that it can boost one’s immune system preparing for the cold seasons ahead. Bon’appetit!

Longevity Resources Discovering Optimal Health Naturally
Welcome to our feature, “Longevity Resources.” Each issue we will cover topics that will explore endless possibilities in achieving optimal health. We are honored to feature one of own past writers, Dr. Paul Fulk (1935-2014). The article written below is just one of many he had written over the years. He was a true pioneer in the field of alternative health and nutrition. The statements or content of the article in this feature is strictly to educate and inform. It is not intended to replace the care and advice of your regular physician.
Curing the Cause of Cancer Why do Mediterranean people have a very low incidence of cancer? It might just be that they consume a phytochemical known as oleuropein found in the olive leaf extract which has been shown to eliminate cancer tumors in 9-12 days. Cancer cures around the world number more than twenty five. The Hunza people in the Himalaya Mountains eat and drink a diet that does not allow cancer to exist. It is non-existent in their society and their life span ranges in the hundreds. They have no drugs and 80 percent of the foods they eat are grown in the sun. The only meats they eat are fish and fowl plus they eat eight almonds a day which contain vitamin B17. Cancer does not exist in their society. The general public just does not see or hear about these cures because the FDA does not permit them to be manufactured and sold in the United States. Herbal remedies are not patentable. Unless the drugs or any chemical remedy can be patented, the big Pharmaceutical companies are not interested in the product. The billions of dollars that have been spent to find the cure for cancer by the American Cancer Society in the 75 years that I have been around has not turned up a single remedy that will, without question, cure the CAUSE of cancer. Yes, there is chemotherapy, but the cure ratio with chemo is very poor. Interesting enough Dr. Tullio Simoncini of Rome, Italy, stated that “Cancer is a Fungus” and wrote a book by the same title which I have . He treated many forms of
18
cancer very successfully by treating the Cancer, whether it is breast, lung, colon or prostate. In fact I quote from his book on page 82 “after many years of disappointed expectations in oncology we should firmly discard the matrix as the cause of cancer.” In other words he said that the orthodox treatment of cancer should be abandoned. Chemo therapy only wipes out the cells that actually give our body the ability to fight foreign organisms. Our whole immune system is depleted via chemo therapy. It just does not make any sense to wipe out your fighting system to cure a problem. Dr. F. C. Odds from England discovered some years ago that there were 150 forms of Candida Albicans which is a symbiotic bacterium that belongs in the small intestine. Its function is the absorption of “B” vitamins. Practically every organ in our body needs “B” vitamins, particularly the liver, eyes, and adrenal glands. Without their functions we will not survive. It would be like driving an automobile without an accelerator pedal. This might be what we call the “chronic fatigue syndrome.” The causative factor is the use of antibiotics and steroids that are consumed orally whether it is a prescription or in the foods we eat. Antibiotics and steroids are added to the food of the animal meat we are eating. As long as there is food for candida albicans to feed on in the blood stream, you can’t get it out of the blood and back into the small intestine. One of the things that Dr. Nieper taught me was, “you have to get the food out of the blood stream that candida is feeding on.” Candida Albicans only feeds off dead undigested protein that never got digested in the stomach. Some literature today states that it feeds off of carbohydrates. This is not true. It is a saprophytic bacteria that by definition feeds on undigested protein. What I have observed through the Dark field microscope, which allows one to see live activity Candida Albican buds literally tear the walls of white and red blood cells apart which dumps the contents of the WBC’s back into the blood component. This produces a lot of toxicity in the blood. Not only that, but by depleting the number of red and white blood cells, the cause for lymphomas and leukemia is explained. Our white blood cells are our fighters and therefore when gone, we have no fight left. My theory is that viruses hiding out somewhere in the body are now able to run rampant causing the cancers to exist because there is no interferon to catch the viruses. Our body needs certain nutritional components to
Oct / Nov 2017
make interferon. For those who have developed cancer, apparently are missing the needed ingredients to make interferon in our body. This is my theory and has not been sanctioned by the FDA.
how they have treated patients for the last fifty years He explained how to get Candida Albicans out of the blood stream and back into the small intestine. By stopping the destruction of the white and red blood cells, the immune system which involves the spleen, thymus and adrenal glands are preserved.
Dr. Royal Rife in the twenties and thirties discovered the viruses that caused cancer. A few years ago I spent a day with the assistant to Dr. Rife, John Crane, who had been with Dr. Rife in the lab for twenty years, who confirmed his discoveries to me.
By producing interferon in between the cells, the viruses are trapped so that the macrophages (WBCs) can literally come to the trapped virus site and eat it up and then take it to the lymphatic cells to be eliminated. Our body operates almost the same way a spider does that makes a web to catch a fly. It has to make the web before it can catch and eat the fly.
Definitely proving it was a virus that causes the many forms of cancer. Dr. Rife had developed a microscope that was able to view virus activity in a live form.. Whereas the electron microscope that is generally in use today destroys whatever you are looking at because of the intensity of the light that is used. Dr. Rife also found that certain sound frequencies would kill the viruses that caused cancer. Yet his method for treating cancer has never been approved by the FDA.
Interferon is our web to catch the virus so it can be eliminated. This may be a preventative to colds as well, and possibly cancer. Consider the fact that colds and flu are viruses.

The Colors of the Wind by Jill Mattson
The wind whistles, roars and purrs. It teases, soothes, or rips us with cold stabs to match its winter song. Poetic? Yes, but literally and subtly true. As the speed of the wind increases, its pitch rises. A diminishing breeze sings a corresponding lower tone. When the wind dances, its movement speeds up, creating musical glissandos, with its pitch gradually changing like the howling of a wolf. How much fun it is to listen to the melodious voice - of the wind. You hear the wind and feel it caressing your skin. It “plays” with you, as if it is keeping you company. Notice how the air makes you “feel”. We all experience music that stirs our feelings. Likewise, listening to “wind choirs” strums your emotions, producing tiny nuances and subtle feelings. Your body has sensors in the skin, in which, you literally and subtly intake sound and yes, even the gentle purr of the wind. The wind is invasive.
20
Energy from sound can transfer to many things, each with correlating frequencies. This happens all the time. Think to the emotive qualities of a movie track. The movie is lifeless without the sounds and music animating it, but its music orchestrates our feelings. This is due to resonance, a phenomenon in which a vibrating force (such as sound) drives something else (such as emotions) to increase its vibrations. Airstream sounds affect your emotions via resonance. Sounds and colors are related. The cycles per second of colored lights, taken down musical octaves, correlate to musical notes. Through resonance, the energy from a colored light causes its corresponding musical note to increase its vibrations. Native Americans Indians believe that the wind colors the sky. Literally it does. Colors correlate to emotions - as one may intuitively feel. Blue lights create a chilling feeling, while red ones emanate warmth. We even hear this in our language. Common examples include: “I was blue today”. “He is
Oct / Nov 2017
red with anger”. “She was green with envy”. Colors are closely linked to emotions. Imagine the colors of the wind! Some days a blue breeze helps us grieve; touching our sorrow to gently pull it out. When the hum of the wind is red, it is enlivening, fortifying and energizing! The green airstream bestows healthy well-being and stability. It assists in relieving anxiety! Can’t tell what color the wind is? Notice your feelings, as you experience the breeze – that tenderly exchanges energy with you. An element of nature that features sounds, colors and emotions is the wind. Its different sounds correlate to musical notes and colors. This “strikes chords” within you! Consider spending a day on a computer and recall how flat and dull it makes you feel. Unseen electronic energy waves subtly drain health. Contrast that with a walk in the woods or even just enjoying the friendly trees lining the street. Nature, and yes her melodious voice - the wind - sings us vitalizing melodies. Windmills harness the wind’s energy on a large level. On a smaller scale, the wind creates sounds, which you ingest. The wind’s gliding tones contain juicy little frequencies that your body loves. You don’t hear these tones in musical scales today. There can be countless frequencies in-between some of the smallest intervals that we hear in music. Our bodies need all these rarelyheard frequencies for balance and health! Our friend, the wind, softly sings these invigorating and healing mini-tones. The wind has many musical tools that she uses, in addition to musical pitches. The weather affects tiny nuances of the “music of the wind”, as she holds moisture and smog. Moist-winds feel differently than dry-winds, creating characteristic sensations, regardless of the pitch. It’s like listening to the same song played by a trumpet versus a violin. Music created by a violin sounds different than the same music performed with a trumpet – due to the instrument’s harmonics. The moist and dry winds create different harmonics, too. The wind creates pitches with its speed, but each pitch has a “harmonic-after-ripple” of sound, depending on the degree of moisture. The speed of the wind can puff and slow down, creating free-form rhythms too. The wind creates pitches, harmonics and rhythms! She is quite the musician! The wind and me? We are chums – singing our song

together like old friends. The wind sings to me. I sing back to the wind – she listens. The wind takes my song and spreads the harmonies so they intermingle with animals, plants and all kinds of things. Most wondrous of all, the wind colors my moods and outlooks, with splashes of rainbow energies, literally painting vitality into my life! BTestimonial aker Chiropractic My Dad Wanted Me To Go To Dr. Baker and It Literally Changed My Life!
Natalie S. and Dr. Patrick Baker “I started coming to Dr. Baker when I was 16 years old and I just started driving. It was perfect timing for me because I could drive over to Dr. Baker’s whenever I needed him vs. waiting on my parents. I didn’t really start going to Dr. Baker’s for any sort of reason except that my dad wanted me to go because he said it made him feel so wonderful. He talked our whole family into going and I decided that one day I would go. I do not really remember why I finally went but I did and I am so glad that I did! Earlier that year I had suffered a tail bone injury that was probably really bad in medical eyes but I ended up never going to the doctor for it, I also play goalkeeper and do lots of pounding onto my body from running and jumping onto the hard ground. Over the years this has cause my body to be wracked out of place from just all the different movement I was doing. I never really even realized it and some of my friends said I used to walk really funny but I never really knew what they meant by that. In the end, I ended up going to Dr. Baker and receiving my first adjustment. I’ll actually never forget my first adjustment because it was so life changing, literally. Dr. Baker had a very hard time adjusting me as first,
22
he said it was because I was soooooo stiff throughout my body. It felt great at first then I went home and started feeling terrible. I had to go to bed around 7 o’clock or something because I was like I need to chill out after that adjustment. I woke up the next day though and felt amazing. I knew though I still needed a ton of work done on my body because my body had this stiffness to it that was preventing from doing movements and I didn’t even know it before. It probably took a year to six months to where my body wasn’t so stiff anymore, after many adjustments a week and massages. After a while my friends said I lost that weird walk I used to have and my playing in soccer increased dramatically. I felt myself actually become more athletic, which I was super happy about because this was the year that colleges started looking at me. I now was able to perform at a higher level in front of these coaches and make my dreams come true. Dr. Baker also helped me not have TMJ anymore and if I ever jammed up something in the body he would fix it, every single time. I am very thankful that I met Dr. Baker. He changed my life with my body performance but his clinic is more than just adjustments. He cares about you and what you want to achieve in life which is why I always enjoy my visits. I’ve known him now for 7 years and I think this is a friendship that will last, plus he always hires the best people to work with him. Mostly everyone in the that office has impacted my life in a way, especially Courtney trying to help me edit my essay, but going to Dr. Baker’s is about getting the whole package when you go and that is why his family clinic is so special to me.” - Natalie S. Learning Thanksgiving and Gift Giving by Cynthia M. Brown
People say I have a lot to be thankful for… I have beaten cancer for 14 years now. I have lived through sepsis… I survived being hit by a car while crossing a street… I guess I am lucky, in a way… I am not sure it is good luck. Think about it for a minute. I am 55 years old. My body has taken a beating: I was a chef for most of that time, working 75-120 hour weeks; lifting 50-100 pounds routinely; hot kitchens; eating on the run; sleeping in power naps. Then, there was the chemo; the huge doses of antibiotics; the steel rod and pins in my leg and the usual wear and tear of an active person, plus a few years of over-indulgent, hard living. My therapist says I am a physical power machine and an extraordinarily flexible person emotionally. I guess that is a compliment…. These days I am trying to understand what my life is about. I didn’t do ANY of the things I set out to do. I have never been big on career with a capital “C”. I have just wanted to make enough money to feel secure. I told a friend once that I would never have much except a place to share good food, good wine, good music and interesting literature and art and she told me that I was the richest person she knew. I am especially having difficulty being thankful these days because our country is so violent, senselessly so. As I write this, in 272 days of this year, we have had 274 shootings in this country in which 4 or more people were injured or killed. I thought one of the great promises of democracy was that the people of this nation could live in freedom without fear. That is a promise long broken and I am not sure how we fix it. So, I am trying to find that place where I AM thankful… I am alive and relatively healthy. I have a good job, a home, a wife who loves me; a talented and devoted son who visits when he doesn’t need something. Yes, I am grateful for these things… then something small happens in my world… I sell ice cream for a living. Our cash registers are very sophisticated machines, served by a cloud network. A few days ago, the firewall blocked all credit card
Infinity
transactions. My store is in an airport. People are always running in to purchase candy or a coffee mug or some small thing as a gift for someone as they travel. So, when the register would not allow a credit card transaction, the two people in the store were patient enough to wait for me to reboot the machine and try again. They began chatting, telling one another where they were going and why… The machine still would not allow the transaction and the woman in line paid with cash. The gentleman she had just met said he would have to forgo buying the Teddy Bear he wanted (his fiance collected bears with smiling faces and had been looking at it earlier) because all he had was plastic. The woman said, “Please let me buy that for you. It would give me such pleasure to do so.” He smiled shyly and thanked her. She watched him give it to his fiance who was delighted with it and he waved to the woman as they passed one another in the gate. Later that same day, another woman did not have cash and the gentleman behind her said, I will be happy to buy you an ice cream. Just remember to pay it forward.” She actually teared up because she was on her way out of town and would not be back for a while and our ice cream was her favorite…. In the strangest places and ways, there are small moments that remind me of what grace-filled and genuine beings we as humans can be. That gives me hope. Those small interactions between people, strangers, in a crowded, hurried and harried airport are gifts-not just to those people but to me. They are small moments of simple kindness and humanity that give me the ultimate gift … the gift of hope. And for that gift, in these dark and violent times, I am truly thankful. Have a wonderful, wonder and hope filled holiday season.

RComing eleasing the Pain of Trauma: Alive in a Whole New Way by Amy Shoko Brown The vast majority of adults in the US carry some form of trauma in their bodies long after overwhelming events have passed. And yet not every overwhelming event “causes” trauma. Sometimes we an overwhelming event like a car accident, injury, even an abusive situation or natural disaster, happens and then it’s over. Other times, the pain or residuals of the events linger like a ghost haunting our vitality. What makes the difference? When there is time, space, safety, and care after an overwhelming event, people tend to heal and are able to move forward in their lives. But for most people, those conditions of time, space, safety and care don’t happen every single time there’s an overwhelming event. And when we don’t have safety, care, time and space after an event (or series of persistent events that can’t be avoided), we develop coping strategies, because we need to do something in order to survive or move forward, in our lives. We might need to push the pain aside, and determinedly strive ahead, insensitive to our health and well-being; or if we’re still in danger, we might have to pull inwards to try to avoid further pain. Those are fine short term coping strategies when we truly are under threat, but when they become longtime habits, they come with a high price. Our health suffers from an over-taxed nervous system, overstressed physiology, and depleted emotional capacity. And that’s why clients shows up in my office with persistent unexplainable health problems, frustrating relationship struggles, situations that trigger them into fight/flight/freeze feelings, or, if their life is going well, an ennui and inability to enjoy it. While it’s tempting to try to address trauma by understanding what happened, that approach alone is not satisfying unless the body gets relief as well. It doesn’t satisfy the pain of trauma. The pain of trauma needs a witnessing, not an understanding or analysis. Pain doesn’t care what you call it or how you analyze it. Pain wants to be soothed, released, acknowledged,
24
accepted, and transformed, definitely not ignored, denied, or explained away or analyzed. That’s why working with relieving the pain of trauma must be informed by the body’s experience, wisdom and intuitive responses. Understanding why we have pain can be important, but understanding is not, in and of itself, enough to relieve pain. The futility of just understanding trauma, without tending to the body, can be likened to an experience that could happen when preparing dinner: you’re cutting vegetables and the knife slips and you nick your finger enough that there’s some blood. It would be ridiculous to pick up the knife to see what brand it is, to try to remember where you got it, or to examine the knife in any way. We intuitively that the spontaneous response is to hold one’s finger, stop the blood, clean it, and put a bandage on it so we don’t bump it while we give it time to heal. We do not have to make it heal. The body knows how to do that. This is true on an emotional level too. A client, I’ll call her Sue, needed help because she had a medical procedure scheduled. Her anxiety level was overwhelming as she the date approached. She told me that she was terrified of lying on a table unconscious with people she didn’t know. Sue understood why she was frightened, and was surprised it was still a problem because she had already done extensive therapy on those issues from the past. What a dilemma! Her adult body needed the procedure to take care of a health problem, but her body memories were in the way of moving forward. As I guided Sue in Somatic Experiencing sessions, her body was able to tell it’s story, and to be heard in the present time. I also helped her address practical concerns about the procedure, and to untangle the past from the present, giving her scared body time and space to tell its story. During sessions, her body released with feelings of warmth, ease, sometimes shaking, trembling, energy flows, deeper presence and sensation, tears and laughter. Sue was able to access the comfort and safety in the present moment, to recognize all those things in her life that are

very different now compared to that past time, and to anchor those feelings in her body. In the session just before her procedure, she was looking forward to having it! After the procedure she sent me a note of thanks: even though the procedure had not yielded the medical results they had hoped for, she was in a radically different place emotionally, with more ease in her body than she had ever had before. She also had a spontaneous beautiful dream vision of her younger self joyously playing, and she felt a tremendous relief and joy, saying, ‘that is how I was, who I am, when I am safe and can just be myself.’ The healing of trauma is ultimately not about just getting over wounds or pains. Its really about restoring a profound goodness and pleasure and joy and vitality. Oddly enough, trauma itself can be the gateway for people to be truly alive. Left unattended or overanalyzed, wounds fester and cause even more symptoms. But there’s another possibility, from the other side of trauma, where the work is a life-affirming process. It is not easy work, yet living restrained by the past is much more difficult. With safety and containment, the suffering can be released and life can open up with possibilities, hope, and ease.

Using the Wheel of Life to
Create Balance in Your Life by Brian Eastman
Back in the 1960’s, Paul J. Meyer of Success Motivation International created a concept which has since been adopted by Zig Ziglar and others: the Wheel of Life. This specific wheel is credited to Ziglar. For a well-rounded life, Paul Meyer said, you need to be putting balanced energy and attention into each part of your life. If you have never checked to see how well-rounded your wheel is, I suggest you do it now, before reading the rest of the article. For well thought-out insructions go to https://sonysimon.com/ productivity/wheel-of-life/. Her wheel break-out is a bit different. Her instructions on how to create your own evaluation are superb. Our Life Wheels tend to be unbalanced because we always tend to do more of what is easiest for us to accomplish. In order to balance our wheel, then, we must put more attention and effort into sections with resistance. Sometimes extra effort is all it takes. But other times, no matter how much effort we put out, we only manage to barely accomplish a change. At that point we must explore whether some deeply held toxic beliefs in our Internal Operating Software are preventing us from achieving a truly balanced life. What are Toxic Beliefs? LIIFT defines Toxic Beliefs as any Belief Statement which interferes with your ability to feel welcomed, loved and accepted in life. Or a statement which prevents you from living a life filled with abundant love, success, joy, happiness, success and contentment. Here are examples of Toxic Belief Statements which affected my clients’ lives. -Financial: It is dangerous to have enough money. -Spiritual: I am unworthy of God’s love. -Physical: If I am healthy my mother will refuse to love me.
26
-Intellectual: It is dangerous to be smart. -Family: I must take care of my family regardless of how it damages my life. -Social: If I trust someone they will betray me. -Career: People will dislike me if I have a good-paying job. How to quickly find and fix toxic beliefs These Belief Statements often reside in the subconscious and are often invisible to our conscious minds. The removal and replacement of these toxicities must also occur within the realm of the subconscious. For example we could change the toxic Spiritual statement to “I am valuable, important and much appreciated by God.” Here are four healing modalities which can help quickly remove toxic Belief Statements and replace them with positive ones: Neuro-Modulation Technique, Easy EFT, Psych-K and the process I developed, LIIFT. If you want to find an appropriate practitioner to help you identify and repair damaging beliefs, please contact me, Brian Eastman. (See below.) I know many practitioners and can assist you to locate someone appropriate.

NSweeteners ew Study Shows Artificial Can Lead to Diabetes by Dr. Joeseph Mercola The American Diabetes Association states foods and drinks that use artificial sweeteners are an option that “may help curb your cravings for something sweet” if you have diabetes. They’re among a number of public health organizations spreading the deceptive and incorrect message that artificial sweeteners make a sensible alternative to sugar for diabetics even as the research continues to accumulate to the contrary. In a small, preliminary study presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Lisbon, Portugal, researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia revealed that artificial sweeteners impair the body’s response to glucose, reducing control of blood sugar levels.1,2 The study involved 27 healthy participants who were given either capsules of the artificial sweeteners sucralose (brand name Splenda) and acesulfame K in an amount equivalent to consuming 1.5 liters of diet drinks a day or a placebo. It took just two weeks for the artificial sweetener group to show adverse effects to their blood sugar levels, including a reduction in numbers of the gut peptide GLP-1, which limits the rise in blood sugar after eating. Lead study author Richard Young, associate professor at the University of Adelaide, said in a news release, “This highlights the potential for exaggerated postmeal glucose levels in high habitual NAS [noncaloric artificial sweeteners] users, which could predispose them to developing Type 2 diabetes.”3 Science Increasingly Suggests Artificial Sweeteners Contribute to Glucose Intolerance, Diabetes Critics of the University of Adelaide study suggested it was too small and “impossible from the data available” to conclude that the observed changes would lead to diabetes.4 However, it’s not the first study to suggest such a link. For instance, drinking aspartame-sweetened diet soda daily increased the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 67 percent (regardless of whether the participants gained weight or not) and the risk of metabolic syndrome 36 percent in one study.5 Artificial sweeteners may increase your risk of weight gain, obesity, metabolic syndrome and other related problems like Type 2 diabetes by inducing “metabolic

derangements,” according to a report published in the journal Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism.6 Research published in Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism also found aspartame intake is associated with greater glucose intolerance in people with obesity.7 Glucose intolerance is a condition in which your body loses its ability to cope with high amounts of sugar, and it’s a well-known precursor to Type 2 diabetes. It also plays a role in obesity, because the excess sugar in your blood ends up being stored in your fat cells. This means obese individuals who use aspartame may have higher blood sugar levels, which in turn will raise insulin levels, leading to related weight gain, inflammation and an increased risk of diabetes. Artificial Sweetener in Four Cans of Diet Soda Daily May Increase Fat Production, Inflammation As far as sucralose goes, in April 2017 research presented at ENDO 2017, the Endocrine Society’s 99th annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, also found that this artificial sweetener promotes metabolic dysfunction that may promote the accumulation of fat.8 Sucralose was tested on stem cells taken from human fat tissue, which revealed that a dose similar to what would be found in the blood of someone who drinks four cans of diet soda a day increased the expression of genes linked to fat production and inflammation, as well as increased fat droplets on cells.9 The study’s lead author, Dr. Sabyasachi Sen, associate professor of medicine and endocrinology at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., noted in a press release, “From our study, we believe lowcalorie sweeteners promote additional fat formation by allowing more glucose to enter the cells, and promotes inflammation, which may be more detrimental in obese individuals.”10 The fact that the artificial sweetener was associated with increased glucose uptake in the cells was particularly concerning, as it could have detrimental effects for people with elevated blood sugar levels, like those with diabetes or prediabetes.11 (Continued on pg. 24)

Consuming Artificial Sweeteners Alters Gut Flora, Exacerbating Metabolic Disease It’s a little-known fact that artificial sweeteners have been shown to induce glucose intolerance by altering gut microbiota.12 Research led by Eran Elinav of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, first showed that mice fed artificial sweeteners developed glucose intolerance after 11 weeks. They then revealed that altering the animals’ gut bacteria influenced their glucose response. Specifically, when they transplanted feces from glucoseintolerant mice consuming saccharin to mice with sterile intestines, the latter group developed glucose intolerance, “indicating that saccharin was causing the microbiome to become unhealthy,” Scientific American reported.13 Perhaps the most revealing part of the experiments came when the researchers tested artificial sweeteners on people. Scientific American continued:14 “[Elinav’s] team recruited seven lean and healthy volunteers, who did not normally use artificial sweeteners, for a small prospective study. The recruits consumed the maximum acceptable daily dose of artificial sweeteners for a week. Four became glucose intolerant, and their gut microbiomes shifted towards a balance already known to be associated with susceptibility to metabolic diseases.” Splenda has also been found to reduce the amount of beneficial bacteria in rat intestines by 50 percent15 and depending on which ones are affected it could certainly affect your diabetes risk. Studies have found that the microbial composition in diabetics differ from nondiabetics.16
Diet Drinks May Trigger a Greater Metabolic Response Than Sugary Drinks Part of the problem with artificial sweeteners is that the sweet taste they provide (in many cases even hundreds of times sweeter-tasting than sugar) does not match up with the energy (or calories) the food provides. Your body, however, is designed to relate the two, and a recent study by Yale University School of Medicine researchers revealed that the mismatch that occurs when consuming artificially sweetened foods and beverages leads to disruptions to metabolism.18,19 In a Yale University press release, senior author and psychiatry professor Dana Small said:20 “The assumption that more calories trigger greater metabolic and brain response is wrong. Calories are only half of the equation; sweet taste perception is the other half … Our bodies evolved to efficiently use the energy sources available in nature. Our modern food environment is characterized by energy sources our bodies have never seen before.” The study found that an artificially sweetened, lowercalorie drink that tastes sweet can trigger a greater metabolic response than a drink with a higher number of calories.21 Your body uses the drink’s sweetness to help determine how it should be metabolized. When sweetness matches up with the calories, your brain’s reward circuits are duly satisfied. However, when the sweet taste is not followed by the expected calories, your brain doesn’t get the same satisfying message.22
In particular, diabetics tend to have fewer firmicutes and more plentiful amounts of bacteroidetes and proteobacteria compared to nondiabetics. A positive correlation for the ratios of bacteroidetes to firmicutes and reduced glucose tolerance has also been found.
This may explain why diet foods and drinks have been linked to increased appetite and cravings, as well as an increased risk of diabetes and other metabolic diseases.23,24 When you eat something sweet, your brain releases dopamine, which activates your brain’s reward center. The appetite-regulating hormone leptin is also released, which eventually informs your brain that you are “full” once a certain amount of calories have been ingested.
A researcher in Amsterdam, Dr. Max Nieuwdorp, has published a number of studies looking at changes in the microbiome that are characteristic of Type 2 diabetes.17 In one trial, he was able to reverse Type 2 diabetes in all of the 250 study participants by doing fecal transplantations on them. Remarkable as it may sound, by changing the makeup of the gut bacteria, the diabetes was resolved, so it’s not a stretch to think that the opposite could also hold true.
However, when you consume something that tastes sweet but doesn’t contain any calories, your brain’s pleasure pathway still gets activated by the sweet taste, but there’s nothing to deactivate it, since the calories never arrive. Artificial sweeteners basically trick your body into thinking that it’s going to receive sugar (calories), but when the sugar doesn’t come, your body continues to signal that it needs more, which results in carb cravings.

Yale Cardiologist — and Ex-Diet Soda Fiend — Speaks Out Against Them Dr. Harlan Krumholz is a cardiologist at Yale University School of Medicine who openly states, “I used to pound down diet drinks.”25 Like so many Americans, he believed the low-calorie, sugar-free drinks to be a guilt-free source of caffeine that helped him keep his weight down. Now he feels betrayed, and he’s speaking out against them. Krumholz cited a recent systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) — the gold standard of research — which found:26 “Evidence from RCTs does not clearly support the intended benefits of nonnutritive sweeteners for weight management, and observational data suggest that routine intake of nonnutritive sweeteners may be associated with increased BMI [body mass index] and cardiometabolic risk.” He also mentioned other concerning studies, like one that found artificial sweeteners activate different areas in the brain than regular sugar,27 which could ultimately influence feelings of hunger and reward pathways. Another, conducted by his Yale University colleagues, found artificial sweeteners “are not physiologically inert compounds” and may “impact energy balance and metabolic function, including actions on oral and extra-oral sweet taste receptors, and effects on metabolic hormone secretion, cognitive processes (e.g., reward learning, memory, and taste perception), and gut microbiota.”28 Krumholz wrote in The Wall Street Journal that he’s stopped his daily diet drinks and is removing them from the rest of his diet as well. “It is reasonable to ask why these substances were not evaluated as drugs in the first place,” he says. “Millions of people are exposed to them every day, and yet their longterm effect is uncertain. Could they be actually causing the health problems they were intended to prevent? I don’t know the answer at this point, but it seems to me that the burden of proof is on the manufacturers to show benefit and demonstrate safety through clinical trials …
agencies to catch up to the science and change their stance on artificial sweeteners before making changes to your diet. If you’re currently an artificial sweetener fanatic, or even if you consume them in moderation, ditching them from your diet is a smart move for your health. Be aware that they’re found not only in diet sodas but also in many low-calorie and reduced-calorie foods, from yogurt and ice cream to bread and salad dressing. Stevia is an acceptable replacement, but I also suggest curbing your sweet cravings by eating fermented vegetables or drinking water with lemon or lime juice added — the sour taste helps reduce cravings, as does organic black coffee.30,31 To learn more, my book “Sweet Deception” has the details about why artificial sweeteners are so hazardous for your health as well as common artificial sweetener-related side effects to watch out for.
