Make Way for the New Oct / Nov 2018 A Health & Wellness Publication Magazine Vol. 82 Southwest Ohio’s Leading Health Magazine
L etter from the editor Dear Readers, The harvest moon is all aglow as there are creepy crawlies everywhere. Things that go bump in the night are suppose to prepare us for a freaky fright! Autumn chills bring spooky thrills to all who dare not take themselves too seriously. As Hallow’s Eve is drawing near, mysteries unravel to tell a tale or two. Contemplation and anticipation of the unknown depends on the outcome in the shadows of deception. There is an ounce of magic in every trace of reality. It is indeed tragic that we sometimes depart from truth and lose our way along the path of life. Crimsons and golds are not too bold for weary eyes to behold, as the abstract patterns of the wayward leaves fall onto sacred ground. The sound of the blowing winds echo and linger in the cobwebs of our minds. Is it nothing but an illusion? On the grand scheme of all that is, we are existing as a tiny particle in this vast Universe. As we take this life day by day, time is nigh, as the Autumn sun sets in the sky. Be reminded that truth has broken as the darkest of dark will begin to fade away, but with this comes a great divide. Take solace as the lightest of light will shine through and lead us to a sacred space and place. Yours in Health,

Breast Cancer Awareness Quote-”She never seemed shattered: to me: she was a breathtaking mosaic of the battles she’s won.” Matt Baker October marks the month of breast cancer awareness with everything pink. It is important to note that there are those women and men that know the seriousness and dread of this horrific disease because they have experienced it first hand. These are the people with courage and determination to survive and may or may not be pleased to see so many reminders that all the pink ribbons bring. There are those who have lost or nearly lost their loved ones to breast cancer and know the reality of the extremely painful process of this unforgiving form of cancer. At some point in our lives, all of us will know or do know someone who has fought a good fight and lost or won the battle. We can admire their strength and endurance with unwavering faith that they will overcome a disease that can strike women or men in their adult life. The very best we can do to help support the women or men, that experience breast cancer is to offer our love and support and also to create an awareness for prevention. Most of us may focus on a cure, but it would be beneficial for us to also be informed about the causes. Some are genetic and we can be predisposed to this disease maybe without even knowing it. Most health experts will agree that eating healthy, regular exercise, managing stress, with no smoking and moderate drinking of alcohol beverages would be wise, but none of us are ever immune to developing cancer of any form. Taking precautions is necessary and always the right step to maintaining optimal health. Some women have suffered endlessly and endured so much with experiencing breast cancer, we may never be able to comprehend their journey. These people have faced the worst odds in their life and when they become survivors, they will tell the story that they are stronger than ever before. With dignity and grace we honor all who participate in creating an awareness for breast cancer, whether it be a pink ribbon or wearing pink, it is a worthy cause for humanity.
Soul Release and Making Way for the New by Cynthia White Flower
Autumn is the season of the soul’s release of old - making way for the new. The consciousness of abundance has peaked, giving way to release, change, and transcendence, revealing the golden shades of introspection and enlightenment. Our soul waits for us to open the door to our realization of that which is most important to us. She sits patiently, allowing us all of the time that we need to recognize that all cycles lead back to the Divine. Our choices determine our density and our lightness of Being. Our soul cannot remain in a place that is too dense. She suffers and sometimes flees from that which cannot positively sustain us. When we experience a situation that gives us severe trauma, for example, our Conscious Self can decide to withdraw and hide from the experience. Then the soul fragments and withdraws to hide from the experience that it cannot bear. This leaves us with less light, baggage, and unresolved issues.
4
We must invite our soul back so that we may empower ourselves and ultimately, consciously release the old to make room for the new. As Earth is The Schoolroom of Light, even in a time when the sun changes its cycle to provide less, we are reminded that we are as golden as the autumn leaves, worthy, and expected to continue our journey in The Light. How do we know where we are in this process? Our soul shines forth our truth to us and to the world. Proverbs 30:17 reminds us that, “The eye is the window to the soul.” What do you see in your eyes? Is the fire still there? Our soul waits for us to manifest that which she is, our goodness internalized, realized, lived. Our Divine Self is within us to lead us to consciously become who we really are. Who are we? The Divine in manifestation. Genesis 1:27 says “So God created

man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.” Yogi Master Paramahansa Yogananda teaches us that “God is the Eternal Consciousness…” What does this mean? We are “the Eternal Consciousness.” We are not limited. We have only to open our minds to this realization. We have chosen to separate from the Oneness to learn that the Self is both, finite and infinite. Rumi states “You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean, in a drop.” Ultimately, it is our goal to return to the Oneness. However, in our chosen lifetimes, our world becomes and is whatever we open and fill our consciousness with. We are our own deepest desire. If we desire love, we must BE that love. If we desire material things, we will anchor ourselves to the cycle of continuous reincarnation with the manifestation of material densities. Our deepest desire in this life will shape our next life. It also shapes the karmic patterns of our family: the females inherit from the females, and the males inherit from the males. Lamentations 5:7 tells us, “Our ancestors sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment.” To manage our deepest desire is to develop the Divine within and manifest it in our lives. Rumi reminds us: “What you seek is seeking you.” We have help: our Holy Christ Self waits for us to call and to recognize that we ARE the Christed Ones! Our Holy Christ Self will pray with and for us, will go and get who and what we need on a Divine level, but we must ask for help. Luke 11: 9 reminds us, “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” We must ask our Holy Christ Self in prayer, to be an active part of our lives. Then one day, we will be “the return of Christ” as we manifest pure unconditional love-personified. This is the time for our personal harvest. This is reflected to us - not only by all of the changes in our lives, but by the seasons that show us that there IS a time for everything. The time for releasing the old is now. To let go of that which no longer serves our higher good opens us to our truth. Consciously choosing what fills our space gives us control of the direction that we are going. Every day, we can ask our soul to come back to us. From our hearts we can say: “My precious soul, come back to me now. My beautiful soul, fill me with your presence. My amazing soul, stand where I stand and be at one with me- today and always.” See your eyes change. They will fill with fire! You will feel a calm energy return, and you

will experience an inner strength that will fill you with peace. Check in with your soul throughout the day. Talk to her. Have your children and family call to their souls. We can all reclaim our Divine. The Corona Class Lessons quotes a channeling from Jesus: “All who would follow in my footsteps must understand that, unless they are able to connect the Great Source Of Life and continually renew their strength, their mission will not be carried forth in the manner desired by God.” Meditation is the key. Yogi Paramahansa Yogananda explains: “What is meditation? Becoming one with the soul. It means banishing the consciousness of being related to the body and to human limitations, and trying to remember that one is a soul. When man begins by conscious mental effort to relate himself to the immortal soul, rather than to the body that he inhabits for one life only, he will recall more of his past experiences, and will eventually remember that he has come down from the bosom of God.” © Copyright 2018 About the Author: Cynthia McNabb, B.S., M.S., (aka, Cynthia, White Flower) is an author, teacher, counselor and an ordained spiritual minister. ASpiritual sk Sage Woman: Advice
for the Real World with Sage Woman
Dear Sage Woman, I have recently been studying the Tarot and I would love your thoughts on why these cards seem to be so taboo with religion. Also, I am curious about the negative association with a few of the cards like the Devil card and the Death card. Thank you so much! -Liz B. __________ Liz, Blessings to you. I would love to delve into this subject especially as we enter the Season of Samhain and Halloween. I have studied the ancient Tarot for over thirty-five years and along my practice, discovered many meaningful connections to religion and spirituality. With their centuries-old iconography, blending of ancient symbols, religious allegory and historic events, the tarot, contains timeless purpose. There is evidence of the Tarot being used as a popular divining tool no later than the 18th century. The essence of this tool is to function as a language through which we speak with the divine. It is not intended to replace your Source (God, Buddha, Goddess, Universe or Great Spirit), but rather to connect you with your deep intuition, your higher self, and the divine source, or God, as uniquely expressed through you. Personally, I honor an individual’s own beliefs about the Tarot, as it is a personal decision whether one chooses to incorporate them in your practice. When I use the cards in a reading, there are two guiding principals helping me understand their power and symbolism. The first principle is “as above, so below.” Everything
6
that happens on this physical world is merely an image of the spiritual higher reality. The second principal concerns the relationship between individuals and community. On an energetic level, what happens to an individual also affects the entire world. When connecting with the Tarot cards, I always work from a higher spiritual perspective. This is why I engage with the so-called negative cards in a much different way than through literal interpretation. Liz, you asked about interpretations of such cards, specifically the Devil card and the Death card. Those are actually two of my favorites. The Tower is my third favorite. Let me explain my perspective on each of these in order to shed light on the positive roll these cards may play in a reading. Death is one of the most feared cards in the Tarot deck, and I believe it is deeply misunderstood. To me, the Death card signals one major phase in our life is ending, and a new phase is preparing to start. The past needs to be placed behind, so energy may be focused on what is ahead. Death is a card of significant transformation. The Devil card represents the shadow self and all that can hold one back from being our best. This card often appears when we have been tricked into thinking we have no control over our shadow self or over negative forces. See this card as an opportunity to bring any and all negative influences into your conscious awareness. When we are consciously aware, we can take actions to free ourselves from their hold. Finally, the Tower, depicts a phoenix rising out of the ashes. It represents transforming from victim to victorious! In this most powerful form, we find the opportunity to break free from the old ways of thinking hindering vital

growth. To me, the Tower may indicate a spiritual awakening or various revelations. I hope this has shed some light on your question and gives you a new perspective on your journey in working with the Tarot and spirituality. I am available for Intuitive Tarot readings by phone. The World is Your Drumming Circle by Jill Mattson
The beat pattern of the rain speeds up and calms down until it slackens to a slight drip-drop. The brittle fall leaves create precise rattle-sounds, rustling and shaking like a tambourine. Yet, the spring leaves birth fresh and soft rhythms, as they wave in the beat of the wind. Invisible currents from animals running, moving insects, wings flapping overhead and even our own footsteps provide our own personal drumming circle. Just as we connect with others by joining a drumming circle and sharing the rhythm, nature joins with us in our own individual drumming circle. Our rhythms reflect who we are to a larger extent than we ever imagined. Our personality is reflected in our personal rhythms: our gait of walking, how fast or slow we speak and move, and even our characteristic postures with their unconscious communications. In the Caribbean, this signature rhythm is called your tumbao;
8
it is as unique as your finger prints. It is the unique beat that you project! The environment unconsciously moves us with circadian rhythms of Mother Nature. Her beatpattern of summer, fall, winter and spring gently guide our moods. Her swing-like movements of more and less sunlight, softly rock us into compliance, as the days march on. Shooting down from the sky are invisible frequencies, below our hearing range, originating from the movements of the stars in the heavens, combining with magnetic currents from underground magna - deep within the Earth. These multilayered waves combine with the rhythms of our breath, circulation and heart beats. Rhythms in close proximity “entrain and impact each other. We are a fluid participant in the rhythms of Earth.

Theof Halloween Legend We naturally sync with the energies and rhythms around us – without any conscious thought that this has occurred. We submerse ourselves in beat patterns of phone and internet signals. We are in the center of a drumming circle of cars impatiently honking, fire sirens screaming, people yelling and frantic hip hop sounds pulsing out of phones. The brain naturally looks for repeating patterns - as we have evolved in nature and she responds to such patterns of sound. Man’s chaotic drumming without any pattern, tires the brain, producing stress and draining our peace and energy. We are more connected than we ever imagined to rhythms and beats, many that we are unaware of. Our life pace and our hearts reflect sounds from within our bodies as well as from the environment and the cosmos. This fall, consider immersing yourself in calming sound patterns. Our bodies relax and restore with caresses of nature’s healing drumming circles.

Halloween is one of the oldest celebrations in the world, dating back over 2000 years to the time of the Celts who lived in Britain. Halloween is also known by other names: All Hallows Eve, Samhain, All Hallowtide, The feast of the dead, The day of the dead. The Celts celebrated their New Year’s Eve on Oct. 31st. It was celebrated every year with a festival called Samhain (pronounced ‘sow-in’), that marked the end of the “season of the sun” (summer) and the beginning of “the season of darkness and cold” (winter). The beginning of the Celtic New Year is on Nov.1st. After the Roman invasion, Samhain also became a harvest festival. They honored the goddess Pomona who ruled fruits and garden. The Romans pictured her as a beautiful maiden, her arms filled with fruit, a crown of apples on her head. Nuts, fruits and apples were part of the ceremonies Apples were considered to be sacred and lucky. It is thought that the colors of orange represented harvest and black was associated with death. ]ackO’-Lanterns were made from turnips to welcome home the souls of the dead. Today, Halloween in America is celebrated with carved pumpkins, trick or treat with plenty of sugared delights and festive parties for children and adults. Halloween is second only to Christmas in spending. Consumers will spend over $2.5 Billion during Halloween. That is a lot of candy, costumes, decorations and party supplies.

AThrough ncient Wisdom the Spirit of the Cat
with Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger I asked our cat Simba what he thought about the concept of the spirit and the body. I suppose I have always thought of it as the body being the “container” or vehicle that the spirit exists within for a time. When the body wears out, the spirit separates from the body and goes home to the Other Side. I was curious to see what Simba had to say about it. What followed is transcribed below. The first paragraph is from Simba, as he answers my question. I added the suitcase/ laundry bag analogy, which he found amusing. Then, it seemed as though a group of voices began to speak THROUGH Simba, and that continued through to the end. I purposely did not edit the text beyond punctuation, as I felt the cadence and expression was fascinating. Thank you. Cindy and Simba “For most of their lives the spirit and the body are one in the Consciousness. At the very beginning and the very end is where there is a sense of separate entities. At birth the spirit feels uneasy as it wiggles into the body... kind of like cramming that extra bit of stuff into your suitcase or the last piece of laundry into the laundry bag. The spirit feels constricted into the

body it chooses for a life. At the end it is the same. The spirit feels constrained in the body and wishes to be released to return Home. Why do we come into a body to begin with? Many have attempted to answer this. Many have failed in that there is no one answer to this. As many as there are spirits, as many there are answers to this question. Simba and those speaking through him... he is the single voice of many spirits at this time... say that for many, it is the longing to experience things in a physical form of their choosing. The spirit may not always anticipate the consequences of or the circumstances to which it comes into as in the form body. Spirit cannot always foresee the impacts of other spirits in body at the same time. Hence some spirits may unconsciously choose to leave the physical form earlier than they had anticipated. Still others settle into the body, and adapt to the circumstances in which they find themselves, and move along in that life for the full time. When one selects the time to return Home, when the One summons that part of Oneself back to the One, then transition happens and the One is whole again and is able to absorb the experiences in order that all spirits may absorb it. At times spirits may ask to travel into body for the purpose of a particular experience, or to perform a specific service for others in body. Hence some may be Teachers, Companions, Workers, or even Servants or Protectors. Some may have a rough path to do so, but bring great honor and are a special gift to all as One. Some spirits wonder greatly at those spirits who choose to be in human form for a time. This requires great courage for some, as often the memory of much the spirit knows is erased when that spirit enters the human form. Sometimes the spirit retains the memories and is seen as a wise or special one by other humans. Sometimes those who remember are ridiculed or thought to be foolish or deluded. For these, the time in body is difficult.

This has been shared with us, as a opening to the understanding that spirit is love, and this is often shining through the eyes of the beloved in animal form. For these allow us all to see the Love of the One from which all spirits are a part. Thanks be to all.”

Feng Shui Basic Principles by Peggy Cross
Feng Shui, meaning wind and water, is an ancient Chinese teaching, both art and science, regarding the energies of space and land, that has evolved throughout centuries. . Indigenous peoples have their systems for honoring and connecting with the Divine with the energy they see and experience in their worlds, and with nature. All are valid according to the teaching of H.H. Professor Lin Yun, founder of the Black Sect Tantric Buddhist (BTB) School of Feng Shui. Feng Shui is a process by which the elements within an environment are analyzed and balanced to enhance the flow of energy. Feng Shui is based on the flow of energy, or chi, around and throughout an environment, and we know that energy, in one form or another, is all there is. In our modern Western world, Feng Shui has been united with concepts of architecture, interior design, psychology, ecology, sound, and intuition because it is about the totality of our environments. There is a great
12
deal of common sense in the teachings, and yet some of it makes no sense at all; it simply is. All people intuitively or subconsciously react to their environments and, depending on their awareness, may or may not make changes to their homes and the space at their work places to positively affect their feelings, emotions, or behavior. One of my favorite teachings of Professor Lin is to honor your intuition about your personal space. When our life is in balance, our thoughts, activities, and relationships flow smoothly. We are connected to the universal energy. When something destroys that balance, then nothing works, and life can be a struggle. A large part of that balance depends on the spaces where we live and where we work—any place where we spend a significant portion of our time. Some spaces feel better than others; they may be more inviting, more

peaceful, more energized and uplifting. Other places do not feel inviting or good and many of us are aware when this is so, either in our own homes or other built spaces. Feng Shui is a process by which the elements within an environment are analyzed and balanced to enhance the flow of energy.
Shui is about living a life of awareness, intention, vision, and Divine connection. I like to think of Feng Shui as Environmental Energy Healing.
Feng Shui reflects your life, so utilizing its teachings is about looking at your life, recognizing the beauty and strengths therein, and being grateful for all that you have. You can then look at what you want to bring into your life, and how you can share your gifts with the rest of the world. It is about correcting what is not working, whether it is colors that you don’t love, imbalance of yin and yang, negative energy, or an unadvised extension of energy reflected in a building footprint. Any of these can produce imbalance and a life that is not fulfilling. The objective is to achieve a harmonious balance within any home or work space that enhances the wellbeing of all the occupants of that particular space. It is the marriage of people and places to the intention in their lives.
About the Author: Peggy Cross began her Interior Design career in 1988 and added Feng Shui to her professional skills in 1998. She is an award winning interior designer and her designs have been published in The Naples Daily News and Architectural Digest.
The first aspect, from a Feng Shui perspective, of creating a harmonious environment, is to recognize and deal with your physical clutter. Many of us have more stuff than we need or even want, by way of inheritance or gifts or sometimes compulsive shopping. Physical clutter is the bane of abundance.
Peggy’s teaching includes several colleges in Florida, Tidewater Community College, The Art Institute of Virginia Beach, The Hermitage Museum as well as private venues locally and throughout the country. She has published many articles in Southwest Florida magazines as well as “Venture Inward”. Peggy has enjoyed many TV and radio interviews in Florida and Michigan and has been a weekly featured guest with other A.R.E. conference presenters during their on line radio shows. She creates energetically enhancing abstract paintings, some of which she has here today as well as upstairs in the library and the bookstore. She knows, as did Edgar Cayce, that beauty, specifically color and art, can be an uplifting energy. Her artwork is in private collections across the country and will be part of a show opening soon at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach. Her CD of meditations is available in the bookstore. Peggy has been a presenter for A.R.E. conferences since 2008. Her service includes giving monthly survey lectures and she is an eGroup mentor.
The ancient energy systems containing the teachings for space analysis are the Bagua, or life map, the Five Elements or Transformational Energies, and the balance of yin and yang. The representation of the Bagua contains yin, yang, and the Five Elements, and considering all of these will provide many answers about your home. All are applied to the shape of any built space and its contents. These will include the colors, furnishings, and shape of the space—rooms, ceiling heights, doorways, and placement and symbology of everything within the space. When one of my clients analyzed the Five Elements in her home, she discovered immediately why her dining room had always felt uncomfortable. As she described it, “I have a wood floor, table, chairs, buffet, and window seat.” She also had plants on the window seat, and immediately understood this obvious overabundance of the wood element. This kind of analysis can help you evaluate your own home. There are many ways to create a harmonious home, one that supports you and what you love. Feng

In addition to Hampton Roads and other areas of Virginia, Peggy has Feng Shui clients with whom she has consulted, on site, in California, Florida, Michigan, Nevada and the Bahamas. Her clients have found spouses, sold homes, enhanced spiritual growth, healed family relationships, changed careers, increased financial flow, and more. She does remote consultations using floor plans, family history and conversation. Peggy also clears homes of negative energies.

What Falls Away by Cynthia M. Brown It is fall. The holidays will be upon us soon and then another year will begin. I am soon going to be 57 years old. I think about aging a great deal. In my mind, I want to believe I can still do anything and everything. My body, on the other hand, tells a different story. I have faced serious illness and physical trauma and my body laughs at my mind all the time! Don’t misunderstand. I have always been pretty healthy and strong so I recovered from these setbacks pretty well. Middle age has set in and now I have become allergic to foods I love; mushrooms, peanuts and all tree nuts. Dining out is a minefield. Will they be baking pecan pie while I am there? Do they fry with peanut oil….can’t go in the door of that place. Oh the French and Italian LOVE of mushrooms. Choices in my two favorite cuisines have become quite limited. And nuts...I love them. They have always been my go to snack. Now what?! I am aging, no doubt about it. Every year, time seems to move more quickly. I seem to move more slowly. So, another year is ending soon. My wife and I just completed a cleanse to jump start a weight-loss program. We both want to be healthier; age more gracefully. My goal is to be within 35 pounds of my high school weight by year’s end. I have lost 16 pounds. Since beginning to swim a year ago, I have lost four pant sizes and two shirt sizes. I am beginning to think that the middle aged spread is beatable. I am also thinking of this weight-loss as a metaphor for my life. I have carried a great deal of weight and responsibility for much of my life. I am a fixer. I like to lighten everyone’s load; fix all that is wrong even when it is not really my responsibility to do so. So I am trying to drop the reigns a little; to do less for others unless they ask for help. I am trying to listen to others and to really listen to myself-what my body needs; what my soul needs; what my mind needs…. Being still and not doing is hard for me. I credit my wife with counselling me to stop fixing everybody’s problems and just BE, more. So, I am trying to lose the weight this year--all of it.

It is fall. The most beautiful season of the year. Trees lose their camouflage and show their true colors just before their leaves fall. I am shedding unwanted pounds and trying to allow some of the weight of my world to fall away as well. Soon, so very soon, I will be 60. I would like to think by then I will be working on what is my essence and what is truly essential in my life. I would like to walk lightly into my sunset years, physically healthy and unburdened in spirit as well. It is not a resolution or a promise; it is more a pathway opening up amid the swirling leaves of time. Enjoy this fall season and take time to ponder the beauty of it and ask yourself what is falling away in your own life?
Relax
by Wayne Holmes
There are times in my life when weariness plays in my favor. I can be a perfectionist and worry over little details. If you recall the television show called Monk you’ll get a somewhat exaggerated image of how I can obsess at times. Weariness often forces me to slow down and decide what is important. When I’m exhausted, I prioritize what must get done and let lesser things go for another day. Weariness can be our bodies’ way of telling us to slow down, relax, and take it easy. The Universe does not depend upon how much we accomplish today. The sun will rise and set no matter what we say or do — or don’t say or do. We cannot mess up the Universe. It will run, the grass will grow, and life will go on. The Dalai Lama said this about worry: “If a problem is fixable, if a situation is such that you can do something about it, then there is no need to worry. If it’s not fixable, then there is no help in worrying. There is no benefit in worrying whatsoever.”[1] Relaxing and letting go of worries isn’t something a lot of us come by naturally. I struggle with it — and maybe that’s the problem, I struggle. Instead, I need to relax, let go, and let it fall away. I also want to remember that my

It wasn’t until I donned a clerical collar that I came to understand how people viewed religious leaders differently. Some were comforted by my presence while others seemed ill at ease. “Before long I realized that many had been damaged through judgment, guilt, rejection, and condemnation by a religion or by someone religious. One of the first signs that can remind us of Fall, is our search for that perfect pumpkin. Activities and fun filled events include a trip to a pumpkin patch, to carve and create a unique Jack 0’ Lantern, typically for Halloween. A variety of winter squash, the pumpkin and seeds have been used by the Native American cultures since ancient times. Are we aware of the pumpkin’s unique healing qualities? It is packed full of antioxidant vitamins A, C and E, and many valuable minerals, including zinc. Pumpkin seeds are armed with amino and essential fatty acids, including fiber, and four times the amount of beta carotene that is found in carrots. Pumpkin seeds have been used as a soothing diuretic and to help relieve an irritable bladder. They have also been used as an effective treatment for enlarged prostate. There are two uncommon amino acids found in the seeds. Cucurbitin, which has been one of the most efficient remedies for killing intestinal parasites, and Myosin, the primary protein constituent of nearly all muscles in the body, which is important in the chemistry of muscle contraction. Pumpkin seeds have been helpful to alleviate the painful symptoms of gout, and reduce swelling of the knees and ankles. Introducing Capers
The Star of the Show!
Capers originate from an evergreen shrub that grows best in warmer climates. The caper is actually an unopened flower bud that is picked before it blooms. They are usually packed in vinegar and served pickled from a jar. There are also caper berries that are derived from the same plant which could be mistaken for capers. The berries are a bit larger and harvested after the flower blooms and have a more mild flavor than the flower bud.
fiber. Digestion is improved greatly just keeping a supply of them on hand, they are delicious sprinkled on top of appetizers or finger foods.
The health benefits of capers may be surprising to some people and the taste of them is unique and pleasant. Widely used in Mediterranean cuisine, capers enhance the flavor of many dishes and salads.
Capers are tiny but provide a powerful supply of various minerals and vitamins with good sources of iron and Vitamin C just to name a few. They can prevent cancer, heal the respiratory tract, and help to relieve congestion. People with allergies can benefit as well. Capers build your immune system, adding them to your diet for the winter months ahead can protect your body from colds and flu.
Capers help with the metabolism in the body and can be good for people who would like to shed a few pounds, because they are low in calories and high in

Those who suffer with diabetes could benefit from consuming capers, according to research studies. They help to reduce high blood sugar levels and triglycerides while assisting with maintaining healthy liver functions.

A special compound found in capers can protect the skin from harmful UV sun rays. Enriched with Vitamin E, they heal a variety of skin problems, like rashes, acne, eczema, psoriasis and inflammation. Capers can also keep skin moisturized, producing a more youthful appearance. It is important to mention that capers are high in sodium, so if someone has high blood pressure problems, it is best to stay away from them. Capers or caper berries can be rinsed or soaked to reduce salt content. Capers are usually not cooked and are tossed in at the end of preparing a dish. Recipes that require garlic, lemon and butter with a main dish can be wonderfully enhanced by creating a elegant cuisine using capers. Bon appetite!
Turkey Breast with Lemon & Caper Sauce
INGREDIENTS: • Two 2- to 2 1/2-pound boneless, skin-on turkey breasts, rinsed • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 3 cloves garlic, crushed • 3 sprigs fresh thyme, plus more for garnish, optional • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary, plus more for garnish, optional • 10 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1/2 cup white wine • 2 cups turkey stock • 1 tablespoon small capers in brine, rinsed • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, minced, plus sprigs for garnish, optional • Zest of 1 lemon
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Fit a baking sheet with a wire rack. Pat the turkey breasts dry and season heavily with salt and pepper all over. Put the olive oil in a large skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Sear the breasts skin-side down until light golden brown, about 5 minutes. Flip the breasts over and add the garlic, thyme, rosemary and 4 tablespoons of the butter to the skillet. Once the butter has melted, use a spoon to baste the turkey breasts with the herb and garlic infused butter for 30 seconds. Transfer the breasts to the rack on the baking sheet, pour the butter and herb mixture over the breasts and cook, basting every 15 minutes, until the internal temperature of the thickest part of the breast reaches 160 degrees F, 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Transfer to a cutting board, tent with aluminum foil and rest for 15 minutes. Deglaze the skillet that the breasts were seared in with the white wine over medium-high heat, then reduce until almost dry, 5 to 8 minutes. Add the turkey stock and reduce by 90 percent, another 8 to 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and slowly whisk in the remaining 6 tablespoons butter, keeping the mixture creamy and emulsified. Once all the butter is incorporated, add the capers, parsley, lemon zest and shallot. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Slice the turkey and transfer it to a platter. Pour some sauce over the slices and serve the rest of the sauce on the side. Garnish with fresh herb sprigs if desired.

Baker Chiropractic Testimonial
Carrie & Her Family I remember the first night in the hospital after having my first child being so happy to have a healthy newborn, but he cried all night long. Everyone told me the next morning that he was just “getting used to his surroundings”. The crying did not get any better after we got home, as a matter of fact it got worse. As a few weeks went on he started to cry around 11 AM, and then was fussy and crying until 4 AM. I was so exhausted and the only way I could get him to sleep was sitting in my lap on his side on a Boppy pillow. That was very unsafe, but that was the only way I could any rest. The pediatrician’s said he had a horrible case of colic. He had an abdominal ultrasound, and an upper GI to see if there was anything else going on. All the tests were normal. He was on 3 different medications and none of them seemed to help. The crying then moved to the car and he cried inconsolably in the car seat. I stopped going places. It was very hard. He did not sleep through the night until the week of his first birthday. I remember it like it was yesterday. If I had only known then what I know now. When he was 27 months old, we welcomed our daughter into the world. Everyone told me that “surely I would not have 2 kids that were that fussy, etc….this one would sleep.” She didn’t. When we came home from the hospital, she started to exhibit almost identical symptoms as our first. The crying started at night, then during the daytime, then in the car seat wherever I went. The big difference this time was that I had a 27 month old running around to watch after, I could not just lay down and “sleep when she slept” – which was not very often. Again, I

stopped going places, it just wasn’t worth it – she was screaming, then my son would start to cry because she was crying and pretty soon I was so stressed I would just go home. When she was 4 weeks old, one of my best friends talked to Dr. Patrick about my situation and she brought me a Chiropractic magazine where he had flagged some pages for me to read. I had not experienced chiropractic care myself, let alone heard of taking children to one. I was skeptical at first and scared. I mentioned it to my husband and a few others, and they were skeptical as well and seemed to be against the idea. I went another 2 weeks with no sleep, exhausted, and not going anywhere and then had had enough. So, I made an appointment, and did not tell anyone except the babysitter who was watching my older child. After her 5th visit, she stopped screaming in the car. She also slept for 5 hours that night. It was unbelievable. It was like this enormous weight was being lifted off my shoulders and I could live day to day again. Dr. Patrick said her neck and her lower back were really out of alignment. Since I had 2 kids that pretty much acted the same way, it makes me wonder if that was my older child’s problem all along since nothing else helped him. She continued to go every week for 3 months; she was seen 22 times before Christmas and was doing great. She had turned from this unhappy, sobbing baby that would not sit a minute in the car to a happier, smiling baby. I felt like I had my life back in many ways and I of course was happier. She is now 3 and continues to go see Dr. Paul and Dr. Patrick. Dr. Patrick and Dr. Paul have also helped me in many ways, after seeing Caroline’s progress – I became a patient myself. I was later in a rear-end accident suffering from whiplash, and I went for months and was able to recuperate from that accident as well. Then while being pregnant with baby #3, I fell on the ice while carrying the dog and injured my back. Here I was pregnant, with a 4 year old, a 2 year old, and I could barely walk. I had several pinched nerves and at times I was unable to put pressure on my feet. From time to time my left leg would just give out on me and I almost fell numerous times. If it had not been for Baker Chiropractic’s care during the last 3

months of my pregnancy, I don’t know how I would have ever made it. I would go to my visit barely being able to walk, and when I was leaving, I walked out like a normal person. Numerous times during that time I walked into the office in absolute tears and everyone in the office was always so friendly, caring and confident. I made it through the pregnancy and delivered a healthy baby boy. The first night in the hospital I was up all night with him. I remember crying in the hospital room, thinking “here we go again…how am I going to do this now with a 4 year old and a 2 year old?” When we got home, things did not change, and this baby cried in the car seat from day one. When he was 2 weeks old, we went to see Dr. Patrick, and sure enough, same problem as Caroline, but not as severe as hers. Within numerous visits again, he stopped crying in the car, and started to sleep. He is now 14 months old and still goes to see Dr. Patrick and Dr. Paul on a regular basis.
received such fantastic care and help from Dr. Patrick and Dr. Paul during so many difficult times. They helped me through some very trying times with several of the kids and with concurrent issues with my own health. I was able to have kids that were comfortable, would sleep again and were happy. I was also able to enjoy them, rather than having them cry all the time. I wish I had known when I had my first child; I truly believe he had the same issue and the first year of his life could have been more comfortable for him if I had known to take him. I have referred many people to them as patients as I am very confident in their abilities and know they can help so many others. Everyone in the office is always so nice, friendly and welcoming. Thank you to Jennifer, Sandy and Danielle for always being so sweet and helpful in the office. And again a huge thank you to Dr. Patrick and Dr. Paul for your years of care and help and to Lana for encouraging me to make the appointment years ago. I could not have made it through all this without Baker Chiropractic’s help and care.
Words cannot describe how thankful I am to have

Rtoelease Old Parenting Habits Consciously Embrace the New by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE Autumn is a time of year when change is in the air; it’s obvious everywhere you look. When you are ready for a change, internally, it always starts with your beliefs — and from beliefs (and thoughts), come your emotions (feelings), which motivate you into action. When you become a parent, you can’t help but change --- and the change is usually for the better! Having a child is a choice that presents far more opportunities for growth than we’d likely have otherwise. To grow, however, we need to not fight change but embrace it, welcoming it with a Conscious mindset. There are actually three different parenting mindsets every parent operates out of from time to time: Conditioned parenting is doing whatever your parents did, without thinking about it. It allows your old subconscious programming to determine your choices and responses, even if they aren’t the most effective or what you consciously, intentionally want to do.
If you want to be a more conscious parent, release old, unhelpful or unhealthy beliefs and action with more helpful or healthy ones, which may require learning more effective skills. Recognizing a belief no longer serves you or isn’t as healthy as a different belief does not need to judge the belief being released as “bad,” which creates guilt. New information is always coming our way and we always have a choice to release the old and embrace the new. Release doesn’t have to be or feel like a death; just as those old dried up leaves fall away, they make room for fresh new buds to come in spring. So, too, can our release of old beliefs and habits be, with joyful anticipation of the new growth to come. __________________________________
Reactive parenting is usually a “fall back” parenting style that pops up when you are stressed, have run out of options, or a trigger button gets pushed. It can also involve doing the opposite of what your parents did, because you don’t like how you were parented.
This article is based on Jody Johnston Pawel’s new book, The Parents Toolshop® Jump Start Guide, which has not yet been released to the public and is only available through her website at this time: www. ParentsToolshop.com/
Conscious parenting involves more than having “good intentions,” which won’t take you far if not supported by skills. It’s choosing the outcomes you want and then making an investment of time and energy to learn the steps and skills that will help you achieve your parenting goals.
About the Author: Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE is the award-winning author of The Parent’s Toolshop® and CEO of Relationship Toolshop® International Training Institute, LLC. She’s a top-rated speaker and parenting expert to the media worldwide, including serving as the Co-Producer and Parenting Expert for the Emmynominated Ident-a-Kid television series.
Conscious parenting involves thinking of the longterm, in the now of each moment, and choosing a response that will take you one step closer to your vision of the parent and family you desire to become. Conscious parenting is also balanced and holistic; engaging your thoughts and feelings, logic and intuition, biology and spirituality.

CMiracle ongratulations to Meredith Lowe – Feature Winner! Meredith is the winner of our Miracle Feature. Sometimes situations happen for reasons that are beyond what we can comprehend. Later, when one has a chance to reflect, a true miracle of life has been discovered!
I feel so lucky when I think back years ago about the time in my life, where things could have gone terribly wrong with my health and now I am so proud that my daughter has grown into a fine young woman, my family has been truly blessed.
Thank you Meredith for such an inspiring story. The Miracle of Life by Meredith Lowe It was getting closer to give birth to our beautiful baby girl and I was ready more than ever! The last months of my pregnancy were very painful. The Doctor proceeded to let me know it was somewhat normal to be feeling discomfort, especially because I had a big baby and I was a petite woman. I had been experiencing sharp pains in my right side for awhile. We thought it was my daughter in an awkward position or she simply was kicking hard, very hard! It was my first baby, so I was not sure what to expect. It was finally time, my husband and I were very excited and nervous for our sweet baby girl to arrive! What was suppose to be a normal delivery turned out to be much different than anticipated. My baby was in a breech position and my Doctor felt it would be best to perform an emergency C-section. Our baby was a very healthy beautiful girl, but there was an astonishing discovery! My Doctor had found a huge tumor on my right ovary the size of a baseball!

I was in recovery a lot longer after the surgery but I was so grateful that the tumor was discovered and removed.

I consider it a small miracle because if my baby had not been in a breech position and I did not have a C-section, my tumor may have not been discovered until it did some real and potential damage to my body and well being.

Do chemical injections change this ability? The MMR shot given to infants can change this ability. The idea that to protect the infant from mumps, measles and rubella is nothing but great if that is all that happens. The toxic residue that accompanies these shots is astronomical. The authorities will defend the need to get the immunizations, but for what reason since none of these viruses are in existence today. Too many systemic conditions have been related to the shots. My children have never had any of the shots and have been very healthy. The youngest is 36 years old and has never had any of the shots. All of them have had nothing but healthy days since they were born. Why is that? They have had constant evaluation and health care that involves chiropractic. The circuit breakers (spine) have been properly aligned so that provides nerve impulses to all their organs are allowed to function in a normal manner. If the vertebrae were out of place no energy would be allowed to flow to the organs. This results in a malfunction of the organs. We call this “disease,” or “dis-ease.” It is very simple to assume that if the organs cannot get the needed energy that they need they cannot do the job that they were designed to do.
26
Is it fair to assume that this may be the cause of many symptoms that creates many disease syndromes? The signals that are supposed to be transmitted from the brain can’t be delivered to specific organs because of a vertebral interference. Do we take a drug to mask this failure? Or do we have the interference removed? The body sometimes tries to remove the “inflammation” which can cause many other problems. Which is nothing more than putting a bandaid on a problem. Many times fatigue, comes from interference to the adrenal glands. Stress, toxins, toxic metals, nutritional deficiencies, and inflammatory markers, are all influences that can cause fatigue and signals the mind that there is something not functioning the way it should. Multiple Sclerosis, ADHD, ALS and all immune system conditions can be resolved in many cases by making sure the vertebrae are in their proper position in the spine. Sometimes it is an inflammatory condition that needs to be resolved. In many cases it is diet that needs to be changed. Such as eliminating too much white refined sugar, which is nothing more than an alcohol in a different form. A yeast form called Candida Albicans causes the immune system to fail causing cancer to become a death threat. Because the immune system has no fight left. I have seen candida tear the red and white blood cells apart, which overloads the adrenal glands, spleen and thymus gland. The cause for all lymphomas and leukemias is candida in the blood stream where it does not belong. However, It is a good guy in the small intestine where it belongs. Where it’s job is the absorption of “B” vitamins. Just like E-coli bacteria which belongs in the large intestine where with acidophilus it makes vitamin B 12. But If you have E-coli bacteria in your throat it will kill you . In the large intestine it is a good guy. This I know, because for many years now Armours veterinary vitamin B 12 comes from the sewers of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and this was a project that I was a part of. Do you know that the bones in your head move?
Oct / Nov 2018
Every time you breath the bones in your head move in specific directions. This motion is what pumps the cerebral spinal fluid up and down your spine. It does not take much of an impact to the head or chin to disrupt this flow. Lack of flow is what causes migraine headaches. The need to take pain pills for headaches is unnecessary. What needs corrected is the movement of the cranial bones in your head so the cranial sacral fluid can move. There are a few professional people who are trained in the technique of adjusting cranial bones. If you have headaches, neck aches, back aches, and TMJ problems, a chiropractor or some osteopaths can make the proper correction to the vertebrae. There is a bone behind your eyes that when it tilts high on the left side it affects the thyroid and seven other hormones in your body. An impact to the head can cause this. So people with thyroid problems sometimes the only thing they need is for these bones to be adjusted to the proper position. When the thyroid does not produce thyroxine, the liver does not function, that breaks down your protein in the liver. This is what produces muscle sugar, blood sugar and triglycerides. If this does not happen weight gain is often the result. All together, when the organs and the brain function properly, it determines how you feel. When we say that we feel good, it is saying that all of our body organs and brain are functioning properly. In order for this to happen, our brain has to get the proper nerve impulses to all of our organs the same way our automobile has to have the spark plugs, which have to get the signal to the motor. If this does not happen, the motor does not take you anywhere. What do we do, we take it to the shop to have it fixed. Is this not what we do? What about this million dollar body you have that may have to be tuned up once in a while? Take it to a good chiropractor who knows how to fine tune your body. The head and spine may need some correction. Copyright 2014

The Golden Charm Summer was indeed over, the Fall winds were beginning to blow and the leaves had been falling in my back yard. I came home from work, changed clothes and decided to grab a rake and start raking, I needed to work through some stress of the day. Enjoying the sunshine, I noticed a gold beam of light hit my wrist, I thought to myself, I should have taken my gold charm bracelet off. It was a gift from my Dad, it had a small gold charm that had my initial engraved on it, I just loved it, but thought it would be fine as I was not intending to stay outside very long. My neighbor came over with her new dog, she was so cute and sweet, I started petting her and my bracelet was shining in the sun again, my neighbor commented that she really liked it and said she had not seen anything quite like it before.
28
It was getting late, I decided to just leave the huge pile of leaves until the next day as I needed to get in and start dinner. As I was washing my hands, I suddenly noticed my bracelet was on but the gold charm was gone! I immediately went back outside searching through the pile of leaves knowing in my heart the charm had to be there. I kept carefully sifting through the leaves with my hands, to no avail, the charm was not showing up, I was very upset and knowing the sun was setting, I went back inside with a heavy heart. The very next morning I had a cup of coffee and went out to begin my search for the charm, I was determined to find it, after going through my steps from inside and out I knew it must be in the pile of leaves that I had raked the day before. Again, I was searching and could not find my beautiful charm. I had remembered telling my girlfriend about the incident the night before and she told me, whenever she had lost an item, she would pray to St. Anthony, the Saint to pray to if you have lost something and he will hear your prayer and you shall find it. I went back inside and decided to pray to St. Anthony, I knew the longer the time it would take to find it, it could perish somehow with the leaves or the grass. I prayed sincerely and went out to search again. Still, I found nothing and sadly headed into work, deciding to pray in intervals the rest of the day, I was not going to give up finding my charm. Heading home, I prayed again to St. Anthony. I drove into my driveway, got out and went to the familiar leaf pile again, this time I took the leaves and ruffled them up and threw some of them up in the air, which seemed odd to me as I was doing it, but I did it anyway for some reason.
Oct / Nov 2018
I saw a glimmer of light with the second bunch of leaves I tossed in the air, I thought it was just my imagination, but it looked like my golden charm, I looked down on the ground where the leaves fell and lo and behold there it was just gleaming in the sun!
Thank you St. Anthony! Lori Stevens

I’m happy to report that these people do not have to languish in fear, depression, or resentment. “In Every Path Leads Home, Wayne Holmes has created a brilliant and very gentle way out of religious abuse and intolerance into peace, happiness, and personal freedom. “It is a way to heal us all.
