A DIFFERENCE-MAKING DISINFECTANT

With a need to protect your home and family like never before amid the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s exceedingly important to ensure your spaces are properly disinfected, which means bacteria and viruses are completely inactivated or destroyed. Consider these steps to disinfect surfaces with an option like Original Pine-Sol Multi-Surface Cleaner. The disinfectant received approval from the Environmental Protection Agency for kill claims against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, after third-party laboratory testing proved the disinfectant’s efficacy against the virus when used as directed on hard, nonporous surfaces. THREE THINGS EVERY CONTACT LENS WEARER SHOULD KNOW An estimated 50 million people in North America wear contact lenses, precisely correcting their vision while offering ultimate flexibility to be physically active and look their best. Healthy eyes require good contact lens wear-and-care habits -- yet sometimes adults and teens struggle to remember. “People who love their contacts often have the best intentions to follow instructions from eye- care professionals. With so much else happening in their lives, it is possible to forget at times. That’s human nature,” says Dr. Rick Weisbarth, an optometrist and chairperson of the Washington, D.C.-based Contact Lens Institute. These behaviors are consistent with recently-conducted YouGov research among 705 adults in the United States. It reveals that while about three in four people will read a new product’s instructions, problems arise if they are too difficult to understand, misplaced or users find themselves in a hurry. In another eye-opening finding, 58 percent of respondents admit to figuring out how to use a new product by trial-and-error. Aided by these insights, the Contact Lens Institute has introduced The EASY Way (Eyes, Awareness, Safety and You), designed to streamline and simplify sometimes confusing contact lens wear-andcare guidelines. At the center of the program are three easy to recall steps for healthy, comfortable contact lens wear that everyone should know: 1. Think Clean. Wash and dry your hands every time before touching your lenses or eyes. If you wear reusable lenses, always clean and disinfect them with each removal, and clean your case as directed. Keep your lenses and case away from any type of water, which can contain harmful microorganisms. 2. Remember: Fresher is Better. Wear your contacts for as long as your eye-care professional says, replacing them with fresh lenses on schedule. Only wear daily disposable lenses once, and always rely on new solution for reusable lens disinfection and storage. Replace your case at least every three months. 3. Trust Your Eye Doctor. Listen to your eye care professional, who has specialized training. If you have any questions, contact their office -- they care about your health and great vision. More information for contact lens wearers is available at EASYwayprogram.org/MyEyes/ “Taking care of your contacts doesn’t have to be hard; it can be easy. That’s why thousands of optometrists and ophthalmologists across the U.S. and Canada will be sharing The EASY Way with patients in the coming months,” says Dr. Weisbarth. The Contact Lens Institute’s members include Alcon, Bausch + Lomb, CooperVision, and Johnson & Johnson Vision. (NewsUSA)

T

he Austin based artist is a tornado of talent and charisma, possessing an impressive vocal range and a light-from-within aura. Kenny studied voice at the University of Texas and cut his teeth as an actor and entertainer in clubs on the city’s famed 6th Street and at ZACH Theatre, Austin’s premiere professional theatre.

In 1997 with his sights set on Broadway, Kenny left Austin to embark on his first national tour with the musical Grease! and then Smokey Joe’s Café. After two years on the road, he moved to the Big Apple. Kenny appeared in several regional productions, including Purlie for New York City Encores! and the world premiere production of The Color Purple: The Musical, produced by Oprah Winfrey. He made his Broadway debut in Disney’s hit musical The Lion King. Kenny also made numerous solo artist appearances at some of New York City’s finest clubs, including Joe’s Pub, B.B. King’s, S.O.B.’s, BAM Café, and the legendary jazz club, Birdland. Since returning to Austin, Kenny released his debut EP, Kenny Williams Sings. It boasts six classics from the American Songbook and a sexy version of the Van Morrison classic, Moondance. His experience as an acclaimed Broadway performer and solo artist merge on this elegant project. While theatre is still a prominent part of his life, he’s most often found on musical stages around Austin. Kenny Williams was born to entertain, and his star shines brightly. He’s a truly gifted vocalist and his spirit, energy, and passion will bring you back for more. The song lives on in Kenny Williams. Join us as we share our engaging conversation. Hopefully, you’ll come away with a greater understanding of why I believe Kenny Williams is a tremendously talented singer and worthy of every accolade he’s received and has yet to receive. William Jackson: Kenny, can you believe the life you’ve created for yourself? I ask this as someone who often must step back and note from where I’ve come. Does this happen to you? Kenny Williams: This happens to me all the time William. Looking back and counting my blessings is a way of life for me. I’m truly grateful for all I’ve done, I’m doing now, and I’m yet to do. It’s an exciting place to be in, although it’s

not always comfortable or certain. But I’ve accomplished more than I ever planned or hoped I would. If this were it, I’d be pretty happy. However, I’m not done yet. There are more dreams and ideas I’d like to see fulfilled. William: I was just listening to Kenny Williams Sings. You truly possess one of the most captivating male voices I’ve ever heard; trust I don’t say this lightly, nor very often. Kenny: Thank you very much for saying so. I genuinely appreciate it. And you’re a man of discerning taste, so I know those words don’t come lightly. William: You want listeners to embark on what journey when listening to Kenny Williams Sings? Kenny: When I went into the studio to record the songs for the EP, I didn’t have a planned journey in mind. We recorded 11 songs in total and seven songs made the cut. Every song we recorded that day held a special place for us musically. But, as we listened back, there was something extra special about the final seven songs we chose. It was either because of something sonically, musically, vocally, or with the storytelling that made those songs stand out. But sometimes the reason was purely instinctual and couldn’t be explained. It was just in the moment of listening and responding emotionally that made the choice clear. Then, when it came time to compile and order the songs, I listened to them backto-back and focused on the flow of energy from song to song, which is what I also do when planning a set list or calling tunes at a gig. I like to flow with the energy of the room. However, in this instance there was no room, only seven songs. So, I simply let the emotion and energy of each song direct me to where they should be placed. Not to mention, how well a song flowed into and/or out of another. But the journey will be different for each listener and open to individual interpretation. William: The music you’ve chosen is timeless. What have you learned about the way your songs continue to resonate with different audiences? Kenny: That people like, and want, real music. Authenticity, honesty, and genuineness shine through. Those attributes are, in and of themselves, timeless. They’re constant. Fads

and trends come and go, but there’s a reason why this music has survived as long as it has and still resonates with so many today. It transcends age, race, gender, and identity. For me, this music possesses an emotional content and lyrical depth you don’t find in much of today’s music. It’s universal in that it expresses the desires of love and life we all share and long for. I’m honored to be singing this music because, in a way, I feel as though this music chose me. William: Your live performances are an awe-inspiring experience. Kenny: WOW! Thank you, William! William: Do you acknowledge how unique your voice is to so many?

18

FLUENTIAL MAY / JUNE 2021

Kenny: No, not really. Although, I do acknowledge, and recognize, people’s reactions to my voice, which still baffles me. I do realize I’ve something special that has always had a unique effect on people. But I try not to focus on that, especially when I’m on stage. I prefer to stay present and, in the moment, to serve the music and ultimately the listener. Plus, I’m my worst critic and can be very hard on myself. William: Would you give insight into your creative process? Kenny: I wish I could say I’ve this elaborate regimen to share with you, but I don’t. When it comes to music or acting, for me it’s an emotional response. Be it a song or a theatrical role, it starts with how I’m emotionally affected by what I’m hearing, reading, or seeing. music. if a song resonates within me and connects with me lyrically and emotionally, then I know I can perform it and move you just the same. As for acting, I tend to look for myself in the role I’m playing. If I can identify in some way with the character, that anchors me and gives me a solid place to come from. Since I’m a singer and do mostly musicals, I usually find the character through the songs they sing. I keep things simple to begin with and try to let the music speak to me and reveal itself. As an actor you must trust your gut or instincts and as a singer, your ears will never let you down. If I can first hear an idea, then I can manifest it vocally. William: Let’s go back to the start. What was it like growing up in Austin, Texas?

Kenny: It was great fun growing up in Austin, Texas. But it was a completely different city from Austin today. Simpler, relaxed, and culturally diverse. I remember hanging out on 6th Street back when it was all about the bands and the music. I was exposed to so much amazing music and so many brilliant musicians. Not to mention the black gospel church scene at the time. It was so inspiring in it’s own way. William: Did growing up in Austin give you the drive to become who you are today? Kenny: Growing up in Austin contributed to my drive in becoming who I am today, because Austin is where it all began. It was the backdrop for everything I did or hoped to do. It offered the platforms and opportunities to learn, discover, and grow into myself. MAY / JUNE 2021

William: What are your parents’ names? Kenny: My mother’s name is Earlynn and my father’s is Roy. William: How many children are in your family? Kenny: One. Just me! I’m an only child. William: Did you feel loved in your home? Kenny: Yes! I was deeply loved. Growing up, it was just me and my mom. I lost my father in the Vietnam war. But, openly expressing love and saying “I love you” was the norm for us, and still is today. William: Was there music played constantly in your home? Kenny: Yes, there was. Every morning while getting ready for school and every Sunday when getting ready for church. We had one of those huge stereo consoles in the living room that blared music all over the house. And I personally played music all the time. It was, and still is, my favorite pastime. I used to come home from school and spend hours by myself, just me and my record player, listening to and singing along with all my favorite songs. I’d often give concerts to the make-believe audience made up of the furniture in my living room. And I listened to everything from James Brown to the Carpenters. I literally loved all types of music. In addition to recorded music and me singing, I also played alto saxophone and flute. So, the sounds of me practicing filled the house as well. Thank God for a loving, supportive, and tolerant mother. William: Was religion practiced in your home? Kenny: Yes, it was. My mother is a woman of faith and she instilled that in me from an early age. I grew up Baptist but don’t follow a specific denomination today. But God and faith are at the center of life, hopes, and dreams. William: As a young boy, when did you realize the music was in you and you were in the music? Kenny: Hmmm? That’s hard to pinpoint. I’ve literally been singing all of my life, and probably had a few of those moments. William: When did you decide you wanted to be a singer? Kenny: I’ve known since I was five years old, I wanted to

20

FLUENTIAL MAY / JUNE 2021

be a singer. It was then my mother put me in voice lessons because I was always walking around the house and singing into a brush like it was a microphone. That’s when my formal training in voice and music theory began. William: How did your family embrace and provide encouragement and support of your interest in singing? Kenny: My mother provided encouragement and support for my interest in singing mainly by showing up. Whenever there was a concert or competition, she was there. She also chaperoned choir and band trips when I was in high school. Her presence, believe it or not, meant the world to me. Not to mention, she paid for everything. So, there’s that. To this day, my mom is my biggest fan and supports me in whatever way is needed. William: How important to you was her embrace? Kenny: It was especially important. It was validation for who I was. I had the support of friends, teachers, and others in the community, but nothing beats the support of home.

Cole, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Cooke, Peabo Bryson, and Kenny Loggins, to name a few. Plus, I was in choirs and sang classical music all through school. But the influences were never conscious or intentional.

If I had my mother’s support, that’s really all that mattered to me. She’s the only human I’ve wanted to make proud. William: What did you study in college? Kenny: I was a voice major at the University of Texas at Austin. William: Now, at any time did you want to pursue any career other than music? Kenny: Not at all. The only other career I was remotely interested in was journalism. For a short moment I was intrigued by the idea of being a reporter and/or news anchor. But, singing quickly eclipsed that. William: Who or what played an influential role in deciding your vocal style? Kenny: The characteristics of how I sound when I sing have always been evolving, and I’ve never emulated any one singer. But the types of voices I’ve always gravitated toward include Karen Carpenter, Nat King

William: I’m intrigued by your entrance into music theatre. Talk to me about your interest in acting. Kenny: Acting was a beautiful detour that happened after college. I never had an interest in being an actor or being in musical theatre. But, through the persuading of a friend who was an actor, I auditioned for Once on this Island at then, Zachary Scott Theatre. When the day came, I ended up not going because I wasn’t feeling well. I didn’t know the protocol, so I just didn’t go. The next thing I knew the general director of the theatre was calling me. I explained what was happening, but he said to come anyway. In short, I sang and was cast as Daniel, the male romantic lead. To say I didn’t know what I was doing would be an understatement. But I knew I was cast because I could sing the role. There were many days when I’d be in rehearsal and a voice in my head would say, “Just get your bag, walk out of the room, and don’t come back.” Needless to say, I made it through the process and on to opening night, and in that moment, I fell in love with theatre. Afterwards, I enrolled in acting classes and dance classes, lost a lot of weight, and did everything I could to be my best on stage. A few years later, I set my sights on Broadway. And that’s how it began. William: Is there a difference when you’re preparing for an acting role as opposed to Kenny Williams, the singer, preparing to record an album? Is the preparation and your mindset different? Kenny: The main difference is when I’m preparing for an acting role I’m playing someone other than myself. But, when I’m preparing to go into the studio to record, I’m going in as Kenny Williams. However, one of the benefits of being in theatre is I’ve become a better storyteller. Theatre taught me the importance of the text. Every word has value. And that has transferred to my preparation and performance of a song. In the same way I give focus to what I’m saying and how I’m saying it in a script for a role, I give to the lyrics of a song. It’s good to map out your journey so you can enjoy your trip. William: With iconic roles in the Purlie and the Lion King, is there anything that would inspire you to take up acting roles again? Kenny: Of course. I haven’t abandoned acting. I’m just more focused on my expression as a vocalist and solo artist. Since returning to Austin in 2013, I’ve appeared in Gospel at Colonus, Sophisticated Ladies, and A Christmas Carol at ZACH Theatre. And I’ll continue to act and pursue the roles that intrigue me and speak to my spirit. William: Let’s talk about discipline and inspiration. How do you find your inspiration and where do you get the discipline to make those inspirations a reality? Kenny: I’m inspired by doing and listening. I often get the inspiration for an idea while performing myself or while listening to others perform, live or recorded. Also, from the everyday life around me. The discipline to make those inspirations a reality comes from the desire to see them manifest. William: How do you cope with any butterflies you may encounter before a live performance? Kenny: I don’t do anything, really. I’ve learned to simply acknowledge it and be in the moment of what I’m feeling. Because the moment I hit the stage they go away. I used to frustrate myself with asking why and trying to figure it out, and that just made it worse. More recently, I’ve turned butterflies into a spiritual omen reminding me I can’t do it alone. So, I’ll stop, take a deep breath, pray, and let it all go. William: Do you recall the point in your life when you realized you had real power? Kenny: It was probably the night of my debut concert in New York City, May 5, 2008. I walked out to a sold-out room, wall to wall with people cheering to the top of their lungs. And, during the show people were leaned in, hanging on my every word. More than recognizing the power, it was very humbling. And I felt so loved. William: I’m not aware of anyone who isn’t fond of you. From where does your large heart come? Kenny: Really? I’m sure there’s someone who’s not fond of me. But I can’t really say where my large heart

22

comes from. Off the top of my head, I’d say my mother because she’s the same way. Or it’s simply the grace of God. I want to give to others what I want for myself. William: What are your feelings on the power of love? Kenny: Love Saves. Love Heals. Love lifts. Love sets us free. And that’s not only the love from another but for oneself. Love starts with you. William: How do you live a conscious life? Kenny: By staying true to who I am and what I do, the way I do it. As I used to always say, “Do you boo.” William: What do you believe Kenny Williams represents to the community? Kenny: Joy. Love. Healing and Hope. These are not my words, but actual words that people have used when describing their experience of me. William: Do you worry about the narratives others have said or written about you? Kenny: Sometimes. I also realize I’ve limited control over what others say or write. But so far so good. No lawsuits filed as of yet. William: Do you feel changed as a person by global events of 2020, and if so, in what ways? Kenny: In a way, but not really. However, the one thing 2020 did do for me was to offer an opportunity for reassessment. It allowed for the slate to be wiped clean and to start anew. Given all the free time on my hands, I decided to go within. I sought to reconnect with my heart’s will and desire and to re-examine what it was I truly wanted. I’m still on that journey and still asking questions. But one thing I’ve learned as a result is to say “no” without guilt. I’ve decided going forward, I only want to do, and say yes, to those things that feed my spirit and bring me joy. Despite the many hardships of last year, I’m grateful for the events of 2020 and how they’re shaping us and our world. William: What do you want to accomplish with the next phase of your career? Kenny: I want more of the same, but on a much larger

scale. More albums. Symphony concerts. Touring in the United States and Europe. A Grammy nomination and a Grammy win. William: What has been your most rewarding professional achievement? Kenny: My most rewarding professional achievement was releasing my self-titled debut EP on January 31, 2019. It felt so amazing to release my vision into the world and have people like it. Second, would be my Broadway debut in Disney’s The Lion King. William: And your most rewarding personal achievement? Kenny: The same as my professional achievement. They’re really one in the same. Music is my life, and my life is music.

William: What’s your proudest moment away from the entertainment industry? Kenny: When I signed the lease on my first New York City apartment by myself. William: What’s something I’d find surprising about you? Kenny: That I can twirl a baton. William: What recently has given you immense joy? Kenny: Releasing my new single Bella Luna into the world. William: What is your idea of living your best life? Kenny: Being my most authentic and genuine self -physically, emotionally, spiritually, and musically. Pack all the kids’ favorite snacks and beverages to keep cool and hydrated. Choose your spot under a big shady tree and spread out for an impromptu picnic. Be sure to bring along outdoor toys for a game of catch or lighten the load and create a nature scavenger hunt with different types of leaves, rocks, and flowers for kids to discover. If they come across an unfamiliar plant or animal, snap a picture with your phone so you can do some research on it when you get home. Encourage the kids to draw or design a piece of art reflecting the things they saw.

The sponges are reusable so you can use them all summer long. Make it extra fun by organizing teams with kids against adults or everyone fending for themselves. Encourage kids to devise their own blockades and targets or adapt a classic game like baseball or dodgeball using water sponges in place of the usual balls. You could also do a sponge scavenger hunt to load up everyone’s buckets before the dousing begins.

Find the Animals Visit your local Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoo or aquarium and have your kids find as many animals as they can from the AZA SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction species list. It’s a good opportunity to talk about the concept of extinction and why these animals are on the list. Follow up the visit with an activity that reinforces how everyone has a role in conservation and look for ways to help protect each family member’s favorite animal.

Make Oven S’mores On a rainy night (or any night) make a s’more by putting it in the oven. They turn out just as melty and gooey as the campfire version but with easier prep and cleanup. This is a tasty way to get those creative juices flowing. Experiment with different candies, such as peanut butter cups in place of chocolate bars. Or add different ingredients and have other family members guess the flavors.

Recycled Animal Crafts Combining a creative activity with an important message such as conservation can help kids grasp big concepts about keeping animals and the earth safe and happy. Use recycled materials such as cardstock and “junk” from the recycling bin as well as hot glue and colored pens or pencils to have your kids create an art project featuring a favorite animal or one they’ve seen at a park or zoo. Simply piece items together to look like the animal as well as its habitat like trees, grass, or the dessert. Then hot glue the items to the cardboard base and use pens or pencils to add details. Ways to Get Fit with Friends and Family

FLUENTIAL MAY / JUNE 2021

influential-magazine.com

With warm weather, longer days, and more free time, it’s easy to find ways to stay fit in summer without a gym. And while you may squeeze in a solo workout here and there, making fitness a social activity can keep participants motivated and accountable.

THIS SUMMER

S

ummertime can be a perfect time to establish new fitness routines with friends or family members. If you’re new to finding workout buddies, here are four ways to get started – as well as shoe suggestions to help keep everyone comfortable and stylish this summer season.

1.

Create your own fun run:

In-person races may still be few and far between this summer, however, it’s still possible to enjoy the love of running. Map out a nature trail to hit once a week, sign up for virtual fun runs, or set up a series of running relay events in the neighborhood. Men’s shoe to try: The Asics Mens GT 1000 10 running shoe is designed specifically for active runners and includes GEL technology cushioning in the heel to absorb shock. Additionally, the AHAR Plus outsole holds up longer than the high abrasion rubber.

2

. Learn a new sport: From tennis to beach volleyball and from soccer to golf, there are

various ways to experience healthy activities as a group while adhering to social distancing guidelines. This can also be a great time to offer younger children the opportunity to try something new. Boy’s shoe to try: Sporty, fashionable, and comfortable, the Nike Boys Reposto sneaker is well-suited for a variety of athletic adventures. Its lightweight design and cushioned insole provide comfort with every step, and the mesh construction adds breathability.

3. Participate in an online class: Whether you enjoy Zumba classes or strength training programs, the online options to exercise are abundant these days. If you have several workout friends, set up a shared calendar and let everyone pick a class. Women’s shoe to try: The Brooks Womens Adrenaline GTS 2 running shoe combines style and performance in a slim silhouette. Available in three colors, it even provides on-trend metallic accents in gold or silver tones.

4.

Lead by example: The next time you go for a run in the park or hit the court for a quick pick-up game, bring the kids. By highlighting the value of exercise and modeling proper form, you can help them gain the skills they need to be active for life. (Plus, the enthusiasm you have for your favorite hobby can be contagious.) Girl’s shoe to try: For a style that brings comfort fashion-forward, consider the Adidas Girls Racer TR 2.0 Sneaker. It comes in navy, white, grey, or clear – and features a lightweight rubber outsole to keep her ready for any family activity. For a one-stop-shopping experience and shoe trends for families, friends, and new fitness partners, visit the Athletic Shop at Rack Room Shoes in stores or online at www. rackroomshoes.com/athleticshop. Exercise shouldn’t be a chore. With new gear, a great attitude, and a sense of adventure, getting fit this summer can be fun for all involved. (StatePoint) l

Are You Growing the Right TYPE OF GRASS?

“Y

Choosing the right type of grass optimizes the chances that your lawn will be healthy, beautiful and easy to maintain. However, experts say there are many factors to consider.

ou may have your heart set on a specific type of grass because of where you grew up or because the Joneses down the street have a beautiful lawn and they grow XYZ grass. But what’s best for your lawn depends on where you live now and your growing conditions,” says landscape designer Doug Scott of Redeem Your Ground in Atlanta, Ga. A free video series from Exmark, a leading manufacturer of lawn care equipment, can help you master your lawn. In a recent Exmark Original video, Done In A Weekend, Grass 101, Scott discusses the various benefits, maintenance needs and other considerations of each grass type. Here he shares some top factors to keep in mind:

Climate: Grasses are typically divided into two temperature categories: warm-season and

l

40

cool-season. Warm-season grasses grow best in hot, southern climates reaching 80 to 95 degrees, and go dormant when temperatures consistently drop below 65 degrees. Species like Zoysia, St. Augustine, Bahia and Centipede all grow best in hot, humid regions, whereas Bermuda grass grows best in hot, arid areas. On the other side of things are cool-season grasses, which grow best in northern regions where temperatures fall between 60-70 degrees. Species include tall and fine Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, and annual and perennial Ryegrass. Living in the middle, in what’s known as the “Transitional Zone” can be both a blessing and a curse. On the positive side, you may have more grass choices, but on the downside, cool-season grasses may look worn-out by late summer, and warm-season grasses will be dormant longer.

FLUENTIAL MAY / JUNE 2021

l

Sun and Shade: While there are

exceptions, warm-season grasses generally grow best in full sun areas getting 8 or more hours of direct sunlight daily, and cool-season grasses grow best in moderate or medium shade areas getting between 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. You may notice that no one talks about “full shade” -areas getting less than 4 hours of sunlight daily -- when discussing grass. That’s because there’s no grass that thrives in these conditions

Water: Different types of grass need different amounts of water to thrive. Warm-season grasses tend to be more drought-tolerant and require less water.

l

Use: Heavy-turf grass like Zoysia or Bermuda stand up to activity best, whereas cool-season grasses typically don’t do well in high-traffic areas where children play or dogs run.

l

influential-magazine.com

l

Maintenance: What’s required

to maintain a healthy lawn also deserves consideration. In general, cool-season grasses cost less to install but more to maintain. Because they don’t form that dense carpet-like structure that heatloving grasses do, cool-season grasses need to be watered and tended more. For more tips, visit www.Exmark. com/Backyard. Exmark’s Backyard Life is a multimedia destination

focused on helping homeowners make the most of their backyard. While visiting the site, you can also access other Exmark Original Series, including Done-In-A-Weekend Projects, Prime Cut, and Dream Yards videos. By understanding your property’s growing conditions and a bit about grass types, you’ll be wellpositioned to select the best grass for your needs and lifestyle. (StatePoint) l

As days are getting longer and temperatures are heating up, people are enjoying more time outdoors and this requires updating skincare routines for the months ahead. During the spring and summer, people are exposed to stronger UV rays from the sun and for longer periods of time, which makes it an important time to refresh daily regimens.

The Real Deal from a Top NYC Dermatologist on

SPRING AND SUMMER SKINCARE

T

op NYC dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner, M.D. shares advice for caring for your skin during warm weather months, so you can continue to look and feel your best - now and for years to come.

1

Safeguard Against the Sun

You should wear sunscreen all year round, but it is especially important during warmer months. Whether there are clear skies or it’s a cloudy day, apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin against the sun’s harmful UV rays that cause wrinkles, dark spots, and even skin cancers. keep the formula fresh and stable. This makes capsules an affordable and effective way to incorporate this key ingredient into your nightly skincare routine.”

Beside wearing sunscreen, sit under an umbrella and wear a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and UV-protective clothing to provide added protection from the sun.

RoC was the first brand to stabilize retinol 25 years ago - and the brand’s heavy focus on clinical studies has helped it become the most awarded retinol brand of the past decade. Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Night Serum Capsules are proven to visibly smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and firm skin while you sleep. In fact, 97% of the product’s testers had visibly reduced lines and wrinkles in just one night. Designed to rival prescription skincare without the irritation, the Serum Capsules caused 0% irritation to the testers’ skin in a clinical study.

2

Turn to Retinol for Fresh and Healthy-looking Skin “Retinol is one of the best studied ingredients we have to fight the appearance of fines lines and wrinkles, and I look at it like the foundation of any skincare routine,” says Zeichner. “Some people unnecessarily shy away from using it in the spring and summer because it can make skin more sensitive to the sun, but the truth is, you can use retinol all year round. Just make sure to always wear your sunscreen, which is important to add to your everyday routine whether you’re using retinol or not.” Commonly regarded as the “gold standard of antiaging ingredients,” retinol is a Vitamin A molecule that naturally occurs in your skin. It works deep within the skin to boost collagen production and increase skin cell turnover. Retinol has been shown to thicken the foundation of the skin, improve skin tone and texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. “I usually have my patients apply retinol at night along with a moisturizer,” Dr. Zeichner advises. “Protecting your skin from signs of aging is more effective if you start now,” says Zeichner. “RoC Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Night Serum Capsules use a high concentration of retinol combined with antioxidants, to smooth skin by helping the skin shed dead cells on the surface to reveal fresh, new ones, so your skin looks healthier. Serum capsules are a great option because they are easy to use and portable. They give a pre-measured perfect amount of retinol serum for one application and they are sealed tight to

Even better, these capsules are 100% biodegradable and available for under $25. Find them in stores and online at Target, or during your next trip to Costco.

3

Hydrate from Inside-out and Outside-in As we are sweating more during warmer months, it is important to keep your body and skin hydrated. Thanks to today’s variety of flavored water, sparkling water, herbal tea and sports drinks, it’s easier now than ever to find a drink for every personal preference. The most important thing to do is to actually drink it throughout the day. “While drinking water is important for your overall health,” says Zeichner, “you still should apply a moisturizer if you have dry skin. There’s no data showing that drinking more water will hydrate your skin, and there’s no data showing that not drinking enough water causes dry skin. I recommend lighter moisturizers like gels and lotions when the weather is humid.”

Avocadoes Dark leafy green vegetables l Eggs l Legumes l Olive oil l Salmon and tuna l l

Healthy fats found in avocadoes, olive oil, fatty fish, nuts and seeds are also essential to keep your skin looking and feeling great, any time of year.

5

Be Comfortable in Your Own Skin Take time to understand what your skin needs, which may change depending on the time of the year and your geographic location.

In addition to applying moisturizers and drinking liquids to hydrate, consume fruits like watermelons, apples and peaches, plus vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce, which have a high water content.

4

Feed Your Skin for a Healthy Glow The nutrients in your diet provide your body with the building blocks for optimal functioning. Getting enough nutrition from foods you eat can be a challenge when you’re on the go. Vitamin supplements can bridge the gap if you’re lacking essential vitamins or minerals. Always ask your healthcare provider for recommendations before starting a supplement. “Some of the most helpful vitamins and minerals for your skin include Vitamins A, B complex, C, and E, along with zinc and selenium,” recommends Dr. Zeichner. These can be naturally found in foods like:

If you live in a dry climate like a desert region, you may need a richer moisturizer than if you are living in a humid area. Your choice in cleanser may also change depending on your climate and skin type. When the weather is dry, hydrating cleansers may be best, but if it’s hot or humid, foaming options more fully remove oil. “You should also wash your face using warm water rather than hot, which can strip your skin of natural oils,” says Zeichner. “Pat dry then apply a moisturizer within five minutes to lock in hydration.” Following these tips will help keep your skin looking and feeling its best this season and beyond. HAVE YOU BEEN ON A RECENT VIRTUAL DATE OR JOB INTERVIEW AND JUST NOT FELT THE ENERGY YOU MIGHT HAVE IN PERSON?

ou’re not alone - as the pandemic has taken away the ease and safety of in-person meetups, “Zoom fatigue” has become a regular part of our vocabulary. Sometimes, trying to connect with someone through a webcam just doesn’t feel right, but the good news is that there are solutions.

HOW TO CRUSH INTERVIEWS AND BUILD RELATIONSHIPS

-EVEN THROUGH A SCREEN

Some people have mastered the Zoom life and have some tips to share about how to foster meaningful personal interactions, even through a screen.

“You’ve got to let your curiosity fuel you,” says OZY CEO Carlos Watson. As host of the viral YouTube talk show sensation The Carlos Watson Show, Watson has created the warmest place on the internet, where his uniquely charming conversation style leads to some of the most intimate conversations with the world’s biggest names. “Don’t think of it like you’re miles away; appreciate the intimacy Zoom brings - you’re in each other’s homes.” And while Watson has invited TV’s most diverse lineup to his virtual coffee table, boasting names from Ava DuVernay to Mark Cuban, John Legend to Megyn Kelly, here are his top tips for anyone trying to get past Zoom fatigue and create real relationships over calls:

Start in a Place of Mutual Understanding Having interviewed everyone from President Obama to Karl Rove, Tomi Lahren to Rep. Ilhan Omar, Watson knows he might not agree with every guest, but emphasizes the importance of finding common ground. “It feels like one of the most divisive times in history, but we need to remember that there’s more that connects us than divides us,” he says. Try to find something you do agree on or a mutual friend or favorite activity. Starting things off on the right foot will allow the rest of the conversation to go more smoothly. Have an Open Mind and no Expectations Don’t approach a new conversation with expectations, because you may be disappointed if they’re not met. But an open mind allows conversations to take whatever serendipitous turn they might. Watson knows this and covers a notable range of topics with the world’s top names. Let your conversations wander

because you never know where they might take you. Surprise Yourself with Creative Questions Along with avoiding presuppositions of the conversation, avoid presupposing what your conversation-mate might be interested in talking about. In his show, Watson focuses on asking creative questions. He might talk about love with politicians, politics with musicians and music with athletes. Whether on a virtual date or job interview, the likelihood is the person you’re talking to is used to getting similar questions and doesn’t get to be creative with their answers. By thinking outside the box with the questions you ask, and pivoting from the norms, you can get the most genuine answers. Hopefully, you feel prepared to tackle that next Zoom interview or ask your Hinge date for a virtual coffee. And make sure to check out Carlos Watson’s expertly charming conversations on The Carlos Watson Show. (BPT) l MAY / JUNE 2021

BIG DREAMERS WAYS TO HAVE CAREER CONVERSATIONS WITH KIDS

PRE-PANDEMIC, TAKE YOUR CHILD TO WORK DAY WAS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CHILDREN TO PEEK BEHIND THE MYSTERIOUS VEIL OF “WORK” – TO SEE WHAT THEIR PARENTS DO ALL DAY AND BEGIN TO DREAM ABOUT THE CAREERS THEY MIGHT LIKE TO PURSUE WHEN THEY GROW UP.

or some parents, every day might feel like Take Your Child to Work Day. For others, health and safety concerns might make it impossible to bring children to their workplaces. That doesn’t mean it’s any less important to take some time to help your children imagine turning their passions into careers. “Children need exposure to the possibilities that exist so they can

influential-magazine.com

envision themselves doing what inspires them in the future,” said Content Architect Rashelle Chase from KinderCare Learning Centers’ education team. “Learning about different career options also helps children learn about how the world works and the different types of roles and systems that are in place to help society function.” Consider these tips from the experts at KinderCare to help parents infuse some of the Take Your Child to Work Day spirit into everyday life. Expose your children to a variety of career options. Young children tend to think of careers in terms of the kinds of jobs they see adults doing, like doctors, firefighters and teachers. Help your children discover careers that are new to them. Talk about essential workers and why they are depended on so heavily. Share details about the work your immediate and extended family members do – perhaps you could arrange a virtual call so your children can see a family member at work. Point out other kinds of workers as your child encounters them, whether that’s during a walk around the neighborhood or while reading a book. Help your children imagine turning their passions into careers. Not every block builder turns into an architect. Some go into construction, some into engineering and some pursue other careers entirely. When children express an interest in a specific career or type of work, help them think about the kinds of skills they could work on now to help turn that dream into a reality. Help your

children make connections between the things they like to do now and the kinds of careers that could lead to. Maybe there’s an activity or volunteer experience your children could do, or a club they could join, that would help nurture that passion and expand their skillset. Break career stereotypes. Point out diverse people doing jobs as you see them in the community or in books or media – like female firefighters, male teachers or biracial female vice presidents – and talk about the diverse viewpoints and experiences each person can bring to his or her career. Be active about squashing gender stereotypes whenever you see or hear them. Encourage your children to pursue their ambitions and let them know you believe in them and their ability to succeed in whatever career they want. Help your child to see “work” and “jobs” as positive things, especially after rough days. Be honest about the struggles and successes you have in your own career. Celebrate your successes and talk with your children about how you problem-solve or persevere through tough times. Model coping skills your children can apply to their own “job” – school. It’s important for children to understand one can still find fulfillment and passion in a career even if there are tough moments. According to fintech company Stilt, consumers paid $11.6 billion in bank fees - including overdraft and ATM fees - within the first three months of the pandemic. If your bank is currently charging you to access your own money, consider switching to a no-fee online bank like Sesame Cash where you have no minimum deposit, no overdraft fees and free withdrawals at over 55,000 ATMs worldwide. Once your needs are met and you’ve identified how much money you have to allocate to other expenses, you can focus on building up your savings, paying down debts and splurging for the occasional “want” like dining out or a new phone or car.

Establish a Savings Routine Building your savings is the best way to prepare for the future and set you and your family up for success. Having a savings account can act as an emergency fund that can keep you financially stable when unexpected costs or emergencies arise - whether that’s a sudden job loss or essential car repairs - and save you from racking up debt. Saving isn’t easy and it can take time to build up a nest egg that will open new doors for you, so it’s important to start right away. Make sure to pay your bills on time and cover your essentials first. Missing bill payments can have a detrimental effect on your credit score, which can result in you paying higher interest

rates in the future, so making at least the minimum monthly payment on your bills is number one. If you have any money left over, you can start to set even small amounts aside into a savings account. You can also set up auto deposits to transfer a set amount of money every week from your checking account into your savings account so you can save without having to think about it.

Start Small and Celebrate Wins It’s OK to start small - even saving $2 a day will pay off and net you $728 at the end of one year. If you can save $50 a week, you will have saved $2600 in a year. It’s

influential-magazine.com

important to celebrate your milestones along the way and set achievable goals - from your first $100 saved to your first month of saving consistently. It’s also important to make sure your savings are accessible if you need them for an emergency - try looking into a high-yield savings account to store your money. A general rule of thumb is to work to build enough funds to cover a 6-month period of rent, utilities, car payments and other financial commitments. This number may seem daunting, so start with smaller goals to save your first $500, $1,000 and beyond.

Don’t Forget About Your Credit Your credit and cash are inseparable when it comes to your financial health. Paying your mortgage or rent and bills on time keeps your credit score healthy, which opens up doors for better credit card offers and lower interest rates on everything from your car payment to credit cards, saving you money in the long run. If you have a good credit score and a history of making on-time payments, asking your bank to increase your credit limit could also give you more access funds, or at least give you a buffer if you need it. Look into resources like Credit Sesame’s free Sesame Cash online bank account and debit card that can help you start earning cash - up to $100 - when your credit score goes up. Discounts and cashback rewards can also help you stow away money for saving: Credit Sesame, for instance, offers up to 15 percent instant cash back from thousands of restaurants and retailers when you use your debit card. This way, you are improving your credit score and saving for the future. And if you connect your employer or IRS direct deposit (including your tax returns and future stimulus checks) to your Sesame Cash account, you can get paid up to two days early.

Keep an Eye on the Prize Saving money isn’t easy, and it’s not exactly fun - but as the world continues to reopen after a year of lockdown, saving now can set you up for that vacation, bigger purchase or return to “normal spending” once it’s safe to do so. HOW TO CREATE A

REALISTIC BUDGET A BUDGET IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FINANCIAL TOOLS IN YOUR ARSENAL, BUT BUDGETING ISN’T ONE SIZE FITS ALL. TO BE SUCCESSFUL, YOUR BUDGET SHOULD REFLECT YOUR INCOME AND SPENDING, BUT ALSO YOUR DESIRES AND NEED TO LIVE A BALANCED LIFE.

L

earn to build a realistic budget with these tips from the financial experts at First Boulevard, a Black-owned digital bank with a mission to close wealth gaps and build generational wealth: Know Your Numbers Start by gathering all income you receive monthly. This should include regular income like paychecks, as well as variable income like money from babysitting or driving for a ride-share company. Next, outline your expenses, or the things you spend your money on each month. To get a more accurate idea, look at your bank or credit card statements. This includes recurring expenses like your rent or mortgage, utilities, car payments and subscriptions, as well as variable expenses that may change from month to month like entertainment

and dining out. Look for trends in your variable expenses. Be sure to include everything in your outline, including trips to the hair salon, shopping, and other treats. Determine Essential vs. Non-Essential Break down your expenses by categorizing them as essential or nonessential. Here, you’re differentiating your needs from your wants. Essentials include things you need to survive, like your mortgage or rent, utilities, groceries, and medical needs. Non-essentials include the things

you don’t necessarily need to survive, but provide you with comforts like cable, gym memberships, dry cleaning or trips to the spa. Nonessentials also include savings and any debts you may have. Create your budget by listing your essential expenses first. Your debts, like student loans or car loan payments, may not be essential for you to survive, but they are highpriority expenses that need to be paid. Put these at the top of your non-essential expenses list. Then list other non-essential expenses based on their level of importance to you. For example, if health and wellness are important to you, your gym membership may be higher on your list of non-essential expenses than buying new clothes. Keep listing your expenses until the total equals all your income for the month. Using all of your income is called zero-based budgeting and helps make sure every dollar of your income is accounted for in your budget. If you get to a point where you don’t have enough income to

Be Realistic When creating a monthly budget, it may be tempting to try and restructure everything to meet your financial goals faster. While this can fast-track your way toward a goal, it can cause you to lose sight of the person who has to do the work to stick with the budget. Instead of creating a bare bones budget where you limit yourself, plan to allow yourself at least a couple of times per week to indulge in small treats. Choose a Budgeting Tool Once you’ve gathered all of your financial information, it’s time to choose a way to manage and track your budget. If you’re old school, you may want to use the pencil and paper approach. Or you can start with pen and paper then transfer that information to a budgeting app. By writing it out first, you’re more likely to catch mistakes or omissions. If you’re a little more tech savvy, there are some convenient and affordable apps and websites available to help. The key to creating a realistic budget is balancing the needs of your finances with your personal needs. Find more practical advice and tools for managing your money at bankblvd.com. worth is simply the total of your cash, investments, and assets, minus your debts. Knowing your net worth is an important step towards financial independence and wealth building as it provides a picture of your overall financial health and can help you focus attention on meaningful financial goals. The Hills’ primary goal was enough financial security so that Nicole could raise their children at home. As their kids grew older, new goals emerged. But what they achieved is something everyone can learn from: They grew their net worth from negative $50,000 to a million dollars in ten years.

Figuring Out Your Net Worth To determine your net worth, you need to add up your cash, savings and checking accounts, investments and retirement accounts, plus significant assets such as your home. Then subtract debts: home mortgage, car loans, student loans, credit card debt, etc. The remaining figure is your net worth. Sound challenging? There are some great free tools available to help you accurately track your net worth to the penny and continue to track it over time as your financial situation evolves. Tips for Building Net Worth The Hills followed sound financial practices spending less, saving more - to build their net worth. Start with these simple steps: Figure out where your money goes. Track monthly income and expenses, to see what you’re earning and spending. Determine which expenses are essential, and where you can trim. Short-term sacrifices can help you achieve long-term goals. Pay down debt. Reducing debt makes a big impact on your net worth. Pay down high-interest credit cards or loans to keep debt from increasing and avoid using credit. Pay more than monthly minimums whenever you can.

EGGS Eggs are known as a good source of protein, but they offer so much more than that. However, it’s important to recognize not all eggs are equal. Eggland’s Best eggs are the only egg with superior taste and nutrition such as 25 percent less saturated fat, more than double the Omega-3s and Vitamin B12 and more compared to ordinary eggs. Omega-3s along with protein can help reduce soreness and aid in recovery after a strenuous exercise and Vitamin B12 provides a natural energy boost, making Eggland’s Best eggs a perfect, versatile food to enjoy before or after a workout.

BEANS Dried or canned beans are found stowed away in cupboards across the country but may not be the first item you reach for when you’re hungry. Consider making them a regular part of your meal planning, because this underrated food is packed with a variety of nutrients to support health and wellness. In addition to being an excellent source of plant-based protein, they are loaded with fiber - helping you feel full longer so you can make it through your workout without any pesky hunger pangs. When buying canned beans, keep in mind purchasing a low-sodium option and rinsing to manage salt intake. From dips and spreads to soups and stews, beans are versatile and great for snacks and meals.

POTATOES Potatoes are a bit of a misunderstood vegetable. While French fries and chips are not the healthiest choice due to how they’re processed, fresh potato options are nutrient-packed, tasty and easy to make. In fact, one medium 5.3-ounce potato with skin-on provides 26 grams of carbohydrates, which can help boost energy. They’re also an excellent source of vitamin C, which is an antioxidant that supports the immune system, and fiber, which prevents blood sugar highs and lows for consistent energy throughout the day.

REASONS TO EMBRACE,

LOVE, AND ENJOY ALL

GRAIN FOODS AS MOST AMERICANS HAVE HEARD BY NOW, WHOLE GRAINS ARE GOOD FOR US - DIETARY GUIDANCE TELLS US TO “MAKE HALF OUR GRAINS WHOLE,” CEREAL BOXES AND BREAD BAGS TOUT THEIR WHOLE GRAIN GOODNESS, AND NEWS HEADLINES REPEAT THE MESSAGE.

hole grains do provide a host of health benefits - for example, the dietary fiber that they deliver supports a healthy heart, gut, and even weight by helping you feel full between meals. But if whole grains are so good for us, what about the other half, the non-whole grains? Enriched refined grains not only deliver vital nutrients but also offer the versatility and affordability that allows you to easily and affordably satisfy the entire family.

1

Foods made with refined grains, which are often mislabeled as something to limit or avoid, are also an essential part of a healthy diet. This is true because millers enrich these grains by replacing nutrients that are lost during the milling process, and sometimes adding nutrients that weren’t even there before - so enriched refined grains have essential nutrients like B vitamins, iron, folic acid, and yes, even dietary fiber!

90

Each of these nutrients is key to living a healthy life at all ages, and recent scientific research shows that eating grain foods made with both whole grains and enriched refined grains - everything from cereal and bread to pretzels and crackers - helps us get enough of them. In fact, almost 40% of our dietary fiber comes from refined grain foods. “Americans need to know the many benefits of including both

FLUENTIAL MAY / JUNE 2021

whole grain and refined grain staple foods in their diets,” says Dr. Glenn Gaesser, a researcher with the Grain Foods Foundation. “Make-half-yourgrains-whole dietary guidance is sound, but the rare research that studies staple refined grain foods, like bread and cereal, shows that they are far from being the ‘bad guy.’ And as everyone will be glad to hear, there’s even room for ‘indulgent’ grain foods, like cookies and cakes, in a healthy diet as long as you enjoy them in moderation.”

2

You can’t beat grain foods when it comes to value. “It can be tough to prepare nutritious meals every day when you’re on a tight budget, but staple grain foods are one of the most affordable sources of high-quality calories and nutrients,” says Sylvia Melendez-Klinger, Founder of Hispanic Food Communications. “Plus you can find them almost anywhere, from convenience stores to dollar stores, and feel good knowing that you’ll always be getting great nutritional bang for your buck.”

DID YOU KNOW YOUR BODY REPAIRS ITSELF WHILE YOU SLEEP? THIS IS JUST AS TRUE FOR YOUR BODY’S SKIN AS IT IS FOR YOUR BRAIN AND YOUR MUSCLES. Sleep in a dark, cool room to fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep. Minimize noise with a white noise machine or fan if you wake frequently during the night.

3. Elevate Your Nighttime Body Care Routine With a Rinse-off Body Conditioner Simply applying lotion after you shower may provide only temporary relief, leaving you reapplying frequently. Instead, Farhang recommends a proactive approach.

Practice a soothing bedtime routine, like turning off gadgets early and enjoying a warm, relaxing shower. 2. Use Products That Work Overnight Choose products that work overnight to moisturize to revitalize skin, renew your skin’s surface, and restore dry skin while you sleep. “If your skin sounds squeaky or feels tight after a shower, it has likely been stripped of its natural moisture,” said Farhang. “You condition your hair, so why not condition your skin?” asked Farhang. “Consider adding an inshower moisturizer such as Olay’s Rinse-Off Body Conditioner with Retinol for an added dose of moisture to help stop dry skin before it starts.” Like the companion body wash, this body conditioner is made with Retinol and Vitamin B3 Complex. Using it every night can help you wake up to renewed and radiant skin.

4. Moisturize Inside and Out “Hydration is key!” added Farhang. “In addition to using products with formulas supercharged with high quality skincare ingredients like Retinol, it’s also important to make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day.” Most health care professionals recommend drinking at least eight glasses (eight ounces each) of water per day. 5. Moisturize Your Environment Especially if you live in a dry climate, or if you are heating your home with dry air while the outside temps are still chilly, consider an inhome humidifier to help keep the air in your home more skin friendly. Humidifiers are available in many different sizes, including portable units that can be moved from room to room. Using a humidifier will help keep the air from drying out whether you’re just relaxing, working from home - or sleeping. Following these dermatologist recommendations will contribute to a good night’s sleep and help your body’s skin stay healthy yearround. (BPT) l MAY / JUNE 2021

THE RIGHT DIAGNOSIS FOR A

RARE DISEASE

ALDELLY ALWAYS LIKED TO WEAR HEELS - “EVEN TO THE SUPERMARKET,” SHE SAYS. BUT IN 2013, WHEN SHE WAS 25, SHE BEGAN TO HAVE DIFFICULTY WALKING IN HER FAVORITE SHOES. “MY FOOT JUST STARTED NOT WORKING WELL.”

he began to experience other strange symptoms, including weird pains in her body, fatigue and troubles with her bladder. But when she saw her doctor, every symptom got explained away. Her feet problems might have been caused by a childhood of dancing. The bladder issues and fatigue could be due to having recently given birth.

Despite being told everything was OK, Aldelly knew something was wrong. One day, at a work event, she broke down. She couldn’t walk, couldn’t control her bladder and she felt exhausted. She called her primary care physician from the party, who said she was going to send her to a neurologist. In 2016, the neurologist did some tests, including an MRI, and later called Aldelly to tell her she had a rare disease called neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). NMOSD is a debilitating autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS), where the immune system mistakes normal tissues of the CNS as foreign. NMOSD affects up to 15,000 people in the U.S., primarily women, and mainly attacks the optic nerve and spinal cord. With NMOSD, recurring attacks can lead to an accumulation of debilitating symptoms and blindness, muscle weakness, and paralysis. But understanding the disease and early diagnosis offer the best opportunities to help treat the condition. In some ways, it was lucky that Aldelly was diagnosed quickly. Many people with NMOSD are misdiagnosed, especially since the symptoms often seem similar to those of multiple sclerosis. But with two small children, a job and a new house, Aldelly denied she had the debilitating disorder. “I just didn’t have time for this.” After other neurologists confirmed the diagnosis, she began treatment.

Still, for a long time, she pretended nothing was wrong. She would make excuses about a twisted ankle when she limped or explain away her cane by saying she’d been in a car accident. Then she decided to come out to her friends, and her wider social media community. “It allowed people to understand me, and for me to be open about my physical limitations.” She has since learned to adjust to living with NMOSD. The disease has made her life unpredictable - she often has spasticity in her limbs, incontinence, numbness and tingling sensations. Unlike many people with NMOSD, Aldelly is grateful she hasn’t had troubles with her eyes. But it has prevented her from doing everyday activities, like take her boys to football practice and watch them play. “It’s a roller coaster,” she says. Aldelly has a strong family support system - her parents live nearby and she says social media has given her a powerful community. “People just started reaching out,” she says. “That’s helped a lot.” Social media has played a key role in bringing together many people living with NMOSD, including Sumaira Ahmed, who started The Sumaira Foundation after she was diagnosed with NMOSD at the age of 25. Her foundation aims to generate global awareness, fund research to find a cure and build a community of support for patients and caregivers while providing education about NMOSD to a variety of audiences through

social media events, conferences, a podcast and more. “We’re passionate about building positivity and communities of support,” says Sumaira. “None of us can go through this alone. I know that if I’m having a tough day, there are people around the world, on social media and in advocacy groups, who will help me through and support me unconditionally.” Three other organizations the Guthy-Jackson Charitable Foundation, the Connor B. Judge Foundation, and the Siegel Rare Neuroimmune Association - have played a critical role in creating the NMOSD support community, which also collaborates with academia and industry to drive research, and educates health care professionals and the public about what people living with the condition experience. Aldelly knows that stress can make her symptoms worse, so she meditates, works out with a trainer and eats healthfully. “I’ve been focusing on me,” she says. “As much as I want to be a great mom and wife, if I’m not OK, my family’s not OK.” She has started writing about her experiences with the disease, “talking about things that people don’t talk about.” Bilingual in Spanish, she engages daily with people living with NMOSD all over the globe. Aldelly says,“living with a demyelinating disease is not a death sentence, more like a constant reinvention of an adaptive lifestyle.” (BPT) l MAY / JUNE 2021

TIPS TO COMBAT CHILD WEIGHT GAIN DURING

THE PANDEMIC

ince the start of COVID-19, many children have not had access to the nutrition and physical activity they would have received in school. This combined with the stress and change of routines resulting from the pandemic has accelerated the childhood obesity epidemic. While childhood obesity has been plaguing the United States for years, pediatricians have seen a stark increase in abnormal rates of weight gain over the past year, and it may have lasting effects on children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children who put on excess weight face a greater long-term risk of health issues, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, depression, high cholesterol, asthma and sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. The good news is it’s never too late to help set a healthy course for your child and your family. Dr. Arethusa Kirk, chief medical officer at UnitedHealthcare, shares warning signs and ways to help keep children active and healthy:

96

What Warning Signs Should Parents be Aware of? If you notice any changes in your child’s weight, the first step is to determine the underlying cause. There is a difference between normal body changes that come with routine growth and development of growing children and rapid weight gain that indicates a more serious health issue. If your child suddenly gains 10-20 pounds, this may require a deeper investigation and a consultation with your pediatrician or family practice provider. With the pandemic, health providers are seeing heightened depression and anxiety from limited social interaction for both children and adults. In states of depression, eating habits and appetite can change which can result in excess snacking and extended time spent inactive. Ask questions to understand your child’s motivations. Are they eating out of hunger, just boredom or when they feel emotional or anxious? The more you understand the motivation and cause, the better the ability to intervene and enlist the help of the right professionals like your pediatrician.

Ways to Keep Your Child Active and Healthy Replace Screen Time with Family Time With the shift to virtual learning, it’s not uncommon for children to sit idle for hours staring at a screen. To combat this, set a daily limit on screen time for all members of the household. Then use that extra time to engage in activities that keep your family physically and mentally active.

influential-magazine.com

WITH THE STRESS OF THE ONGOING PANDEMIC, CHILDREN STARTING TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL IN PERSON AFTER MONTHS OF VIRTUAL SCHOOL, SPORT AND ACTIVITY CANCELLATIONS, AND THE CHANGE OF WHAT WAS CONSIDERED THE “NORMAL” ROUTINE, IT CAN BE EASY TO CONSIDER YOUR CHILD’S WEIGHT GAIN OF A FEW EXTRA POUNDS AS TEMPORARY. BUT THIS WEIGHT GAIN MAY NOT BE TRIVIAL. Building in “movement snacks” such as stretches, jogging in place or dancing during the school day can be a mood booster and get kids moving. Encourage Healthy Nutritional Habits While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying treats in moderation, setting expectations around snacking is crucial to a healthy lifestyle. When kids are at home all day, they’re more prone

to excessive snacking. Curb those cravings by limiting snacks in general. Making healthy options visible and unhealthy options invisible using a ‘this not that’ approach such as carrots and hummus instead of chips or cookies will help set patterns and habits for building healthy choices that have the potential to last a lifetime. Reestablish a Family Routine The structure and predictability that came with a normal school schedule can be difficult to reestablish or replicate in hybrid, virtual and inschool settings but maintaining regular sleep and meal patterns can be a great starting point. Reestablishing a set of patterns and routines in the new normals as they continue to evolve helps everyone in the household feel a sense of control and understanding of expectations. The bonus is, not only will a bedtime and meal routine help children stay focused during the day, it will also help them maintain a healthy weight. Supporting Your Child - No Matter What While you help your child on their journey to a healthier lifestyle,

remember to demonstrate compassion and understanding to your children as well as yourself. How you approach your child’s weight challenges will ultimately define how they view themselves. Be sure to provide daily encouragement, pointing out what your child is doing well. If you maintain a positive and supportive approach, the results will follow. Talk to Your Child’s Pediatrician If you’re worried your child is putting on too much weight, reach out to their providers. A pediatrician will consider your child’s history of growth and development in the full context of their medical history. This can help determine if your child’s weight is in an unhealthy range and if more lifestyle changes are needed. While busy schedules and competing demands can often get in the way of good intentions, every parent wants to ensure their child grows up healthy. Each new day provides a fresh opportunity to make the commitment, choices and changes needed to keep your child on a path toward a lifetime of health and wellness. (BPT) l MAY / JUNE 2021

INSPIRING WAYS PEOPLE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE

IN CANCER CARE F

THE CANCER JOURNEY INVOLVES CHALLENGES WELL BEYOND THE MEDICAL ISSUES. THESE EMOTIONAL, SOCIAL AND LOGISTICAL DIFFICULTIES - FROM TRANSPORTATION STRUGGLES TO COPING WITH THE DIAGNOSIS TO CHILDCARE SUPPORT - CAN OFTEN MAKE PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS FEEL ISOLATED AND HELPLESS, SEARCHING FOR WAYS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

ortunately, many survivors, innovators, and entrepreneurs are striving to support people with cancer as they navigate that journey. Astellas Oncology encourages and celebrates those efforts to tackle everyday challenges in cancer care beyond medicine with its fifth annual C3 “Changing Cancer Care” Prize. This year’s winners developed new approaches to support people impacted by cancer, from the onset of their first symptoms throughout the recovery and healing process. They show that by offering cancer patients and their caregivers hope through support, resources and information, change is possible. Here are the stories of the three winners and their inspiring ideas.

Grand Prize Winner Dr. Omolola Salako, an oncologist from Lagos, Nigeria, will receive a $100,000 grant and resources to advance her winning idea: a groundbreaking web and mobile app to connect Nigerian cancer patients with specialists and hospitals - along with a supportive community of survivors. After her sister died from advanced kidney cancer, Salako was driven to improve the accessibility of care in Nigeria for others touched by cancer. PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF WWW.OMOLOLASALAKO.COM.

“Cancer is a public health crisis in Nigeria, where the ratio of a clinical oncologist to new cancer patients is extremely low and cancer death rates are high,” said Dr. Salako. “I see this firsthand as an oncologist. The Oncopadi app navigates cancer patients and caregivers from the comfort of their home, to the clinic and back home.” With those goals in mind, Salako developed Oncopadi, a platform for patients to access information about symptoms and screening, to find doctors, counselors and medical resources, plus to connect with other patients and survivors for support. “Our mission is to demystify cancer,” said Salako. “Avoidance of care means that many Nigerian cancer patients die. We can save more lives if we detect and treat cancer earlier.” Thanks to the C3 Prize, Salako will expand her app to reach more patients in Nigeria and other countries, providing free access to a cancer coaching program that educates, engages and improves cancer patients’ experience.

Innovation Prize Winners Each winner will receive a $50,000 grant and resources, along with tools to help them develop and advance their ideas. Dr. Valeria Arango Vélez from Medellin, Colombia, is a medical doctor - and cancer survivor. She developed a mind-body therapy app called Healing Presents, using scientifically proven mind-body techniques to help people cope with the emotional challenges of the cancer journey. These therapies help patients enhance the relaxation response of the body, to improve their quality of life and support the healing process. Healing Presents is the first and only app created for each moment of the cancer journey, from diagnosis through recovery, to address specific emotional needs patients have at each stage. The apps address challenges including dealing with pain, insomnia, stress and physical changes during the treatment and healing processes. “The app uses methods including mindfulness, music therapy, guided breathing and meditation to practice before, during and after treatment under a doctor’s care to help with specific moments of the cancer

journey,” said Vélez. “Using these techniques can help improve patients’ quality of life as well as treatment effectiveness.” Vélez hopes to expand use of the app to more patients, including low-income patients, and to translate it into Portuguese. Lisa McKenzie from New Orleans, Louisiana, is the founder of You Night Empowering Events. McKenzie witnessed up close the challenging emotional journey of cancer through two good friends. In response, she developed an organization to help address the emotional challenges of the cancer journey and, in 2020 during the pandemic, she created a virtual storycrafting program to empower those with cancer. Through McKenzie’s program and Story Crafting course, people are empowered to articulate their life’s journey through key experiences, finding inner strength and remembering they are far more than their cancer diagnosis. COMMIT TO GETTING THE CARE YOU NEED AS YOU AGE

Older adults in America are living longer lives and will outnumber people under the age of 18 by nearly 500,000 by 2034, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. However, living longer does not automatically mean living healthier or happier. In fact, nearly 61% of people in America aged 65 and older live with chronic conditions, according to the National Institutes of Health, and a report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine found nearly 1 in 4 older adults are considered to be socially isolated. Research published in “Health Affairs” indicates that people who advocate for their own care feel more empowered. The age-friendly health systems approach can help older adults take control of their well-being and demand care that helps them maintain independence by making sure their doctors know their needs and preferences; also called “what matters.” Just as the name implies, age-friendly care prioritizes what matters most to each individual older adult and helps meet goals such as daily walks around the neighborhood or cooking favorite meals. To get started, consider these four essential elements of age-friendly care from The John A. Hartford Foundation to discuss with your doctor: What Matters. As people age, what matters most to them might change. It is important to share concerns, goals, wishes, needs and experiences with your health care providers. What matters also includes end-of-life care goals and preferences.

Medication. Many older adults take multiple medications, which can cause side effects and, in turn, impact daily living. Honest conversations with doctors about medications, their interactions and side effects can ensure treatment plans are optimizing quality of life. Mentation. Older adults are at higher risk for dementia, depression and delirium, and conversations with medical providers about changes in memory or mood and annual screenings for dementia and depression can lower the risk. Mobility. Staying active can help older adults maintain health and independence. Talking to health care providers about mobility concerns can identify personalized tips to improve strength, flexibility and balance. Healthy aging is possible when the patient and care team are on the same page with the same plan in mind. For ideas on how to start these conversations, visit johnahartford.org/ agefriendly. eniors are particularly vulnerable to home fires. According to the Pew Research Center, older Americans are more likely to live alone in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world. There’s also been major growth in the older population. In fact, the National Institute on Aging reveals there are currently 39.5 million people in the United States over the age of 65, including 5.6 million people over 85. When living alone, older adults can often neglect or are unable to install and maintain smoke alarms. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 40% of people aged 65 and older have at least one disability, which could impede their ability to adequately maintain their home safety and security systems.

When working alarms are installed, age-related hearing loss can make it difficult to respond quickly to the sound of a standard smoke alarm. Home occupants also have far less time to evacuate - only 2 or 3 minutes - due to the increased prevalence of synthetic-based furnishing materials. “While keeping our older relatives safe has always been important, it’s never been more so as many of us remain separated due to COVID-19,” said Sharon Cooksey, Marketing and Communications Manager for Kidde. “This part of the population is particularly vulnerable to home fires, so it’s critical for family

l

Prepare your sleeping area. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, most fatal fires occur when people are sleeping. Consider sleeping in a room on the ground floor to help make an emergency escape easier and have a landline telephone or cell phone and charger nearby along with a local emergency number in case you are trapped by smoke or fire. Keep a flashlight and whistle near your bed to signal for help.

a home fire due to hearing loss and mobility issues. Interconnected alarms - if one alarm sounds, all alarms throughout the home sound in unison - can help alert seniors to a fire incident more quickly. Alarms should be installed on every level of the home (including basements), in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area.

Opt for alarms that can be powered by a 10-year sealed battery. For older Americans l

l Be extra cautious in the kitchen. Seniors 65 and older are 2.5 times more likely to suffer from life-threatening or fatal injuries in kitchen fires compared to the rest of the population. Never leave cooking unattended and turn off the oven and burners once finished. Consider programming kitchen devices to automatically shut off after a set period of time and avoid wearing loose clothing as it can easily catch fire. l Check your escape route. Ensure you’re able to open all doors and windows in your home; locks and pins should open easily from the inside. Know how to operate emergency release devices on any security bars on doors and windows, and check that windows haven’t been nailed shut, or sealed shut with

who are unable to access their alarms every six months, consider a 10-year sealed battery smoke alarm that eliminates the need for frequent battery replacement. Depending on your preference, you can either install a hardwired alarm with a battery back-up or an alarm powered by a 10-year battery. l

Consider a strobe alarm or bed shaker.

For older residents who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, or who remove hearing aids to sleep, consider alarms with strobe (flashing) lights for a greater chance of waking a sleeping person. For more fire and carbon monoxide safety tips for your entire family, visit www.kidde.com/seniorsafety. (BPT) l

THE EVOLUTION

C

OF SPORTS CARS OVER A CENTURY kPHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF WWW.COMPARETHEMARKET.COM.AU.

omparethemarket.com.au created a video animation to visualise the evolution of the fastest production car of each decade, spanning the last 100 years. As well as providing an average horsepower and top speed figure, the video shows how the shapes of these speed machines has changed over time. The Roaring ‘20s: Old Fashioned Speed Machines Sports cars during this decade were a statement in elegance, but that didn’t stop them from paving

WHEN IT COMES TO THE FASTEST PRODUCTION (ROAD-LEGAL) CARS IN HISTORY, THE LAST TEN DECADES HAVE DEMONSTRATED HOW BRANDS HAVE REALLY SHIFTED GEAR TO PUSH PERFORMANCE FASTER AND FASTER OVER TIME.

the way for faster supercars in years to come. With an average horsepower between 50 and 70, engines ranged from four to eight cylinders and the fastest of the lot reached speeds over 60mph. Adorned with stately leather seats and hoods that opened sideways, models like the Bentley 3 Litre or Rolls-Royce Phantom Jonckheere Coupe are timeless pieces of art as much as they are road cruising machines. During and After World War II The ‘40s saw speedy automobiles, such as the Aston Martin Atom and

influential-magazine.com

Jaguar XK120 become more curved with smoother shapes and lines to minimise wind drag.

This decade also saw the legendary battle between Ferrari and Ford, as well as Ferrari and Lamborghini.

These cars’ bodies also sat lower to the road, and they grew wider to make room for larger, more powerful engines like the Jaguar’s 1970CC twin carburettor heart or the six-cylinder dual overhead camshaft XK6 engine used on the Jaguar XK120. World War II caused a bit of a dip in the average top speed in our animation, as some car manufacturers turned their efforts into creating engines for their nation’s war machines.

An Age of Sci-Fi Beastly supercars of the ‘80s saw rear spoilers become fashionable not just for their sci-fi looks but also increased downforce – providing grip around fast corners. Rear ends grew larger and recessed side vents (fender vents) became popular for their style and ability to relieve pressurised air, improving stability.

The Era of the Muscle Car The ‘60s beckoned the golden age of American muscle cars, like the Chevrolet Corvette C1, the 427 Stingray and Shelby Cobra – long, powerful cars designed to go fast in a straight line. European brands produced agile roadsters with sleeker angles and headlights that retreated into the car’s framework, further reducing wind drag to help the fastest cars of this decade reach speeds over 170mph.

Leading into the ‘90s, stability became an issue. The MercedesBenz CLK GTR flipped over backwards at speeds of over 200mph in 1999 on the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans. The same model had also become airborne twice previously, including one instance involving Australian racer Mark Webber. A New Millennium, a New Age of Supercars At the turn of the millennium, cars became wider at the rear and

angled slightly downwards; this design helped them to maintain a neutral or negative pitch, helping reduce any air pressure buildup. A new century also saw new contenders enter the race, such as Koenigsegg, Zenvo and Shelby SuperCars (SSC). Cars like the Bugatti Veyron, SSC Ultimate Aero, Zenvo ST1, Koenigsegg Agera R and Hennessey Venom GT all brought more than 1,000 horsepower to the road. In the early 2000’s, the fastest supercars and hypercars were able to reach speeds just over 250mph. In the late 2010’s, the fastest hypercars were recording speeds over 298mph. In 2019 the Bugatti Chiron was the first to break 300mph (490kph) . A Shift to Green Power While recent years have seen a growing number of supercars embrace hybrid and pure electric engines, electric cars aren’t anything new. In 1899, Belgian inventor Camille Jenatzy created the first car to reach 100kph, La Jamais

What’s Next? The race for supercars is always speeding up with carmakers pushing the limits of aerodynamics, power, and style. Looking to 2020, Hennessey Performance is working on a new carbon fibre chassis for their Venom F5 to help propel its car to speeds of over 305mph, according to one Hennessey Performance spokesperson. Indeed, the competition may never end as luxury marques and performance brands chase racing glory – and at least right now, there are exciting things to come. Diversity Without Division: According to Irshad’s research, we humans are terrified of being judged negatively by our peers. That’s why we’ll easily conform, even to bad ideas. And a bad idea sweeping through education today is the myth that we can honor diversity through divisive tactics. False, says Irshad. Depicting certain groups of people as inherently oppressive and others as uniformly victimized strips all people of our common humanity. It also drains you and me of our unique individuality. In both cases, diversity loses. To practice diversity without division, Irshad has innovated the Moral Courage Method. The Moral Courage Method: Informed by neuroscience and psychology, the Moral Courage Method equips students to communicate effectively across differences and disagreements. At its core is a basic law of human behavior: We usually open our hearts to those who give us a fair hearing first. In other words, if you want to move the needle on an issue that you’re passionate about — from racism to climate change to abortion to animal welfare — listen before speaking. This skillset is crucial to reaching durable solutions for the world’s biggest problems. Teaching it is the passion that propels Irshad Manji and Moral Courage ED.

I grew up in a very rural area, Culiacán, Mexico, and spent much of my childhood at the farm my grandfather worked on, watching him interact with the farm dogs. He was very instinctual with the dogs, a natural pack leader, and I think he saw that same gift in me. It sparked the beginning of a lifelong interest in dog psychology. William: When did you realize your relationship with dogs was special? Cesar: I always had a connection with dogs, even when I was a child people called me “el perrero” (the dog boy) because I was always with my pack. Cesar: I’ve had many dogs in my pack throughout my life and they’ve all taught me to focus on what’s truly important in life: living in the moment, embracing a connection, and enjoying life. William: What is your basic training philosophy? Cesar: I always say I train people, not dogs. Dogs follow their instincts; it’s the human who needs training to lead their pack. find she’ll give you loyalty right back. It’s all about trust, respect, and love. With anything, especially with dogs, always remember to have calm, confidence, love, and joy. William: Which dog training techniques do you consider the most effective, and why? Cesar: The most important and effective training technique is to understand dog psychology. To me energy is everything. We must be good pack leaders who instill a calm and confident energy. And never forget...nose, eyes, and ears in that order when training. Dogs are also pack animals by nature and when you make a dog a part of your family, you’re now a pack. If you’re not a good leader, you’ll not be able to effectively

train your dog. Consistency as a leader is key, and what we do consistently is what’ll stick with your pack. I also believe exercise is paramount to success and will help to have them and you focus on training. Exercise, discipline, and affection. William: What are the most common mistakes you notice pet owners making with respect to giving feedback to their dogs? Cesar: Not understanding nose, eyes, and ears. And remember dogs live in the moment. Pet parents always think it’s affection, affection, affection. The truth is, it should always be exercise, discipline, and then affection. If you understand that, then you’ll know when feedback is best. William: Safety, communication, and freedom. How are these important considerations for a dog parent? Cesar: Safety is the number one priority for all dog owners. It’s all about safety, peace, and love. As the pack leader, we must protect our packs as well as interact safely with them at all times. Packs continuously look to their leaders for communication, which is why your body language and energy is so important. We must ensure our packs remain free from fear and distress, and we, the pack leaders, provide this by remaining in a calm state. Animals follow calm energy; humans are the only animals who’ll follow an unbalanced leader. If we’re not calm, our dogs aren’t calm either. Freedom means giving your dog the ability to express themselves in normal dog behavior. One of the most important aspects of freedom is allowing your dog the opportunity to roam and explore; therefore, it was so important the Halo Collar gives pack leaders the ability to create their own wireless fences. Our wireless fences allow dogs to safely explore within set boundaries. William: What are your favorite things to do with your dogs? Cesar: WALK. I walk for a living and that’s the best thing you can do for your own mind especially for your dog. I love pack walks and so do all my animals.

This, and exercise, in general are very integral. To me it’s fun and provides my pack with the fuel they need to continue being as incredible as they are. One of my favorite things when I have time is also a beach day. With Halo this has helped me make this activity even more fun as it provides more freedom. Of course, though, you must follow the rules and boundaries along with understanding your environment to create safety for you, your pack, and for those around you. We also love to listen to music and dance. Have you seen some of Benson’s moves? Or doing tricks with Sophia. What an amazing girl she is! It’s all about being creative and instilling good energy overall. William: You’ve partnered with Cesar Millan and founded Halo. Tell me about this new business venture. Ken Ehrman: The Halo Collar isn’t just a smart collar, it’s the next generation in dog fence systems. It was designed to keep your dog safe anywhere, and to do this by incorporating the best dog behavioral advice directly into the way the system works. With Halo, you can simply create a fence on your phone (including up to 20 unique fences), and the fence is “sent” to your dog’s Halo Collar. From there, the Halo Collar works autonomously, providing automatic guidance that reminds your dog to turn around if they walk too close to the boundary (and provides encouragement when they’ve accomplished their goal). After years of development, testing, and innovation, we had our official launch in Fall of 2020--and we’re already seeing our community grow by thousands of dogs each month. It’s been so exciting to hear about how Halo is changing lives and keeping dogs safe. People are reaching out to us from all over the country to share their stories about how Halo is helping them feel relieved, like their dogs are protected, and like they’re growing a stronger bond with their best friends. It all started with a vision of accomplishing this goal, and now that we’re seeing it come to fruition, it’s all very exciting and humbling. MAY / JUNE 2021

William: What is the shared vision you and Cesar had in mind when developing the Halo brand? Ken: Halo initially started as a vision to keep dogs safe from roadside accidents. The number of dogs who are lost or hurt each year because they don’t understand boundaries is staggering.

Millan and my brother, Michael Ehrman, to create a revolutionary system that lets you create a boundary on your phone that keeps your dog inside. Both the technology and the behavioral techniques work together to create a system that works with your dog’s instincts, rather than against them.

So, our vision was to bring humans and dogs a nextgeneration solution that teaches them how to train their dogs boundary awareness. As César says “Rules, Boundaries, and Limitations” and an important part of Halo is to help pet parents and their dogs gain safety, peace, and love. With Halo’s advanced technology, dogs and their people now have the freedom to go anywhere, easily set up a fence, and know the Halo Fence boundaries will provide automatic guidance to keep dogs safe. We know safety is top-of-mind for any pet parent (ourselves included), so our vision is to give people the tools they need to achieve safety, communication, and freedom with their dogs in a single, all-in-one solution.

So, with Cesar’s guidance, we’ve developed an amazing system that works with dogs’ instincts, rather than suppressing them to keep them safely inside portable boundaries to address this major problem. By following Cesar’s training program in the Halo App, you’ll learn everything you need to know to train your dog to recognize the boundary using specific associations.

William: What is the value in involving the “best” in technology, dog expertise, and dog psychology in developing the Halo Collar? Ken: The value of involving the “best” technology and dog expertise is we were able to design a system that works with your dog, for your dog. Using my background in next-generation Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, I partnered with Cesar

William: What are the needs to be addressed by the Halo Collar? Ken: The Halo Collar provides protection that reaches far beyond the limitations of any other “smart” system or dog fence. Traditional fences can be dug under, jumped over, or simply left open. In-ground wired fences have a limited range and are easily cut or damaged. And activity trackers or GPS Collars can only track but can’t prevent your dog from running into a dangerous area or escaping the yard. Most importantly, every pet parent just needs a way to keep their dog happy and safe. Cesar’s training program teaches people to bond with their dogs, and the Halo Collar addresses all the major gaps that other fences leave open. So, everyone can have the safety,

communication, and freedom they’ve always wanted with their dogs. William: How does the Halo Collar work? Ken: The Halo Collar lets you create a fence outline by tapping on your phone screen or walking around with your Halo Collar. Once that fence is created, it is “sent” to the Halo Collar, which then uses its “internal logic” to automatically guide your dog to stay inside the boundaries you set. This is possible because the Halo Collar intelligently calculates your dog’s location in relation to the GPS fences. When your dog enters the “Warning Area” or leaves the fence, their Halo Collar provides customizable feedback at the right time. Cesar’s 21-day training program will teach you how use boundary awareness and positive associations to train your dog to turn around and come back to safety when this happens. So, with Halo, you can create fences anywhere--at home, at the park, at the beach--to keep your dog safely inside.

humane education and compassion, we can create change” rings true for helping both people and dogs. Better Humans, Better Planet. William: Cesar, of what are you most sure? Cesar: Never go against Mother Nature as my grandfather taught me. If you follow this, you’ll gain something incredibly special and that is loyalty. I’m also most sure my responsibility and purpose are to provide the world with education through the spirit of the dog. This is all a part of my mission...Better Humans, Better Planet. l

William: How do you continue to be of service? Cesar: I continue to work on my mission to help educate people and rehabilitate dogs, providing support through my Dog Psychology Center and my flagship training programs experienced with Training Cesar’s Way. Going even further by connecting and providing ways to have a great experience with your dog through products that help people at home like the Halo Collar. Additionally, my work through the Cesar Millan Foundation is focused on providing education through canine companionship especially with kids. Our mission statement “through
