A NOTE FROM OUR PUBLISHER Like so many, I surmise you were eager to turn the page on 2020, a year that’s a clear representation of despair. At this time of the year, it’s appropriate to look back at the past and forward to the future. People have asked me how the InFluential Magazine family is doing. The quick answer is, we’re adjusting much easier than we initially thought possible; however, many things remain uncertain and precarious. The early impact of COVID-19 arrived in March and changed many key aspects of our business model. Our management had to respond expediently to identify changes needed to our finely tuned advertising, sales, editorial, and human resource process foundations. Refinements were mostly seamless to the view outside our organization but impacted the way we conducted business to bring each of our award-winning editions to life and continue to serve our communities. During early 2021, we expect to finalize and, if necessary, implement additional adjustments to further guarantee the future of InFluential Magazine, Spanish InFluential, and Teen InFluential. I hope you’ll continue to support us as we continue our thrilling work to improve our publications and inform our readers. Of course, we’ll strive to keep you updated on our progress. SURVEY SHOWS HOW COVID-19 INFLUENCES

As being in quarantine and weathering the COVID-19 pandemic continues to put a damper on things, American women are turning to their makeup routines to feel a sense of control and comfort, according to new research.

I

n September, marketing firm OnePoll asked 2,000 American women about how they’re staying positive and confident as their time in quarantine and social distancing drags on. According to the findings, 51% said wearing makeup and changing up their looks turned out to be a small way to help them escape the stress of current affairs. If you’re feeling the need to switch things up, you’re not alone. Read on to

For that reason, respondents identified a rise in more natural makeup looks as a key trend of 2021.

Pro Pointer: Serve your extra-sharp, aged cheddar (and other cheeses) at room temperature. When cheese is too cold, its taste is muted. By allowing cheese to come to room temperature, you’re allowing its flavors to come out and join the party.

Directions: 1. Bring large pot of water to a boil. Once water is boiling, add plenty of salt and 1 pound radiatori pasta. Cook until pasta is al dente (5-10 minutes depending on type of pasta). 2. While pasta is boiling, add 1/2 cup half and half to a separate large pot or saucepan and reduce about 15 minutes over low heat. 3. Once cream is reduced, whisk in 16 ounces cream cheese cubes until smooth, then add 2 cups of The Big Cheese. Continue whisking until smooth. 4. When pasta is cooked, strain and transfer to pot containing creamy cheese mixture. Mix until pasta is evenly coated and serve.

FOOD & BEVERAGE Peanut Butter Chicken Recipe courtesy of “Unsophisticook� Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 12 minutes Yield: 6 cups Peanut Sauce: 1/2 cup creamy natural peanut butter 3 tablespoons sweet red chili sauce 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1 tablespoon honey 1/8-1/4 cup hot water (optional) chopped unsalted roasted peanuts (optional) 2 tablespoons olive oil or avocado oil 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, diced into 1-inch cubes 1 tablespoon soy sauce 3/4 cup peanut sauce cooked brown rice assorted bell peppers, sliced chopped unsalted roasted peanuts (optional) 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter 1/2 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/4teaspoon salt 2 cups rolled oats (quick or regular) 1 cup bran flakes 1 cup sweetened coconut flakes 1 cup dried fruit (raisins, blueberries or cranberries) 1 cup roasted peanuts, chopped 1. In large, shallow, microwavable dish, combine honey, butter, peanut butter, brown sugar, vanilla, and salt. Microwave at 50% power 2 minutes then whisk to combine and microwave at 50% power 2 minutes.

2. Add oats, bran flakes, coconut flakes, dried fruit, and peanuts; stir to combine. Microwave on high 1 minute. Stir and microwave 30 seconds. 3. Press mixture into 13-by-9-inch baking dish lined with parchment or wax paper with some extra hanging over edges to easily lift bars out. Use bottom of glass wrapped with plastic wrap to press granola mixture firmly into pan. Allow to cool completely 30-45 minutes. Cut into 12-14 bars.

1. To make peanut sauce: In small glass bowl, whisk peanut butter, sweet red chili sauce, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and honey until blended smoothly. 2. Thin sauce with hot water to desired consistency. Garnish with chopped unsalted roasted peanuts, if desired. 3. To make chicken: In large skillet over medium-high heat, drizzle oil. Add diced chicken then pour soy sauce over top. Saute about 10-12 minutes until chicken is fully cooked. 4. Serve with peanut sauce, brown rice, and colorful sliced veggies. Be Upfront About Your Symptoms Being honest with your doctor about your symptoms is an important first step in your journey with your IBD diagnosis. Oftentimes, this starts by sharing exactly what you are experiencing on a daily or even weekly basis, such as frequency of bathroom visits, pain, blood in your stool or fatigue, so your health care team can gain a better understanding of how you are feeling. One way to help ensure you’re managing your diagnosis properly is to keep a journal, which offers a simple way to track if symptoms have improved or worsened since your last visit and help you remember questions that may arise. If you find it difficult to discuss certain topics, practice talking about these issues with a friend or family member before appointments and consider bringing a loved one to appointments for support.

Work with Your Health Care Team to Set Goals Goals, or targets, will be different for every patient based on the type of disease, severity, progression, and a variety of other factors. Finding the right IBD treatment can take time, so it’s important to balance your present priorities. Start by taking an honest approach to your personal preferences regarding medications. Consider if you have time in your schedule for lengthy infusions. Or perhaps you prefer administering self-injections. You may have short-term goals, such as attending a family wedding in two months, as well

Be willing to learn each part of the process, including treatment options, potential risks, and benefits. It may take some time before you see any progress made toward achieving your goal. Certain treatments may take some time to work. Review any external factors that may impact the effectiveness of your treatment. Talk to your doctor about adjusting

In addition to medical treatments and procedures, patients should practice selfcare and seek help from mental health professionals when necessary. IBD patients are at greater risk for anxiety and depression than the public, according to research published in “Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics,” so it’s important to address these issues when they arise. Simple strategies to tackle IBD one day at a time include planning the night before for the day ahead, allowing yourself extra time in the morning and scheduling time in your day for rest. To relieve stress and anxiety, consider low-impact exercises, such as yoga, walking, biking, or swimming, techniques like meditation and mindfulness or diaphragmatic breathing, also known as deep breathing or belly breathing. These complementary therapies can help improve your mental health and emotional well-being. Along with your own self-care, it’s important to be willing to admit when you need help. For some, this may include reaching out to a mental health professional. A therapist, such as a clinical psychologist or licensed social worker can help you work through sadness, uncertainty, and anxiety – emotions common for many patients with IBD. Visits may be short-term or can be longer, if needed. Effective therapy allows

patients to practice the coping strategies learned between visits. Mental health therapists may also provide assignments to reinforce what is discussed during visits. Build your support system and seek guidance from mental health professionals if you ever feel as though the burden of your diagnosis is too heavy to carry alone.

A More Targeted Approach to IBD Care In the past, health care providers managing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients focused on how their patients were feeling in the moment. They worked toward fixing active symptoms and tailored treatment plans specifically to address those symptoms. Today, providers are moving toward tailoring treatment to address individual patient needs and helping them achieve remission. This approach, known as “treatto-target,” works to improve IBD care and outcomes by encouraging patients to partner with their health care teams to identify specific treatment goals and monitor progress toward those goals. While clinical remission (absence of symptoms) is one level of success in managing IBD, the treat-totarget approach is geared toward achieving mucosal healing, when no active inflammation is seen during a colonoscopy, and histologic remission, when there is no active inflammation seen at the tissue level. Achieving these levels of mucosal healing or histologic remission generally results in a lower risk of flares, fewer surgeries, lower reliance on steroids and reduced hospitalizations.

Providers adopting the treat-to-target method are likely to work with their patients to consider the risk of developing complications in the future and tailor treatment recommendations based on the disease activity and severity, patient’s genetic makeup and anticipated risk. It’s a more proactive approach than the traditional reactive treatment style as it emphasizes the importance of looking toward the future to avoid complications of the disease and minimize risks.

To achieve a patient’s goals, a provider regularly checks to make sure the patient is responding to the strategy at certain intervals. Both diagnostic and prognostic, or predictive, tests help physicians assess progress against a target. Common tests include endoscopic procedures, radiologic scans, and diagnostic and predictive biomarkers. If tests do not demonstrate sufficient improvement, additional evaluation or treatment adjustments may be advised

to provide the right drug to the right patient at the right time for treatments tailored to the individual. Goals depend on multiple factors and variables, but the anticipated outcome is an improved quality of life for patients managing IBD. efore the COVID-19 crisis began, one in nine people, including 10 million children, already lived in a food insecure household. Communities of color are disproportionately affected by both poverty and hunger. For example, one in four Native American and Alaska Natives experience food insecurity. One in five Blacks and one in six Latinos experience food insecurity. As a result of the pandemic, unemployment has soared and the need for food assistance has increased. More families are accessing food banks than ever before, and many of them for the very first time, which is why it’s really important for everyone to come

BRIGHTER FINANCIAL FUTURE IN 2021 As we enter 2021, here’s one more essential item to put on your list in addition to canned goods and masks: a financial checkup. According to Fidelity Investments’ 2021 New Year Financial Resolutions Study, more than two-thirds of Americans experienced financial setbacks in 2020, often from the loss of a job or household income or another emergency expense. ven those lucky enough to maintain their income still may have had to tap savings to help others, as nearly one in five attribute their financial setback to providing “unexpected financial assistance to family members or friends.” Despite this, many Americans remain optimistic and determined to make their money work harder in the New Year, with 72% confident they’ll be in a better financial position in 2021. “Americans are clearly ready to leave 2020 behind and start 2021 off on the right foot, including when it comes to their finances,” said Stacey Watson, senior vice president with oversight for Life Event Planning at Fidelity Investments. “This year’s top financial resolutions are consistent with what we’ve seen in the past, however, what makes 2021 unique

is how people will achieve them, given the financial pressures and major life events many continue to experience throughout the pandemic.” This year, 65% of Americans are considering a financial resolution for 2021, which is down marginally from last year (67%), but still quite strong given the headwinds experienced by so many families. Younger generations appear to be more committed to actively improving their finances in the new year, with 78% of all Gen Z and Millennial respondents considering a financial resolution compared to 59% of all Gen X and Boomers. “Younger generations are building up their careers, families and finances, so it makes sense they have important financial resolutions to make. Still, Gen-

• Begin with a budget Of those who said they were in a ‘better’ financial situation this year compared to last, more than one in five attributed the success to budgeting better. Replenish that rainy-day fund More than 8 in 10 Americans say they’ll build up their emergency savings in 2021, an important money move considering that many may have tapped into their stash of cash due to financial setbacks in 2020.

• Find new sources of income Nearly two-thirds say they plan to find new ways to make money in the new year, whether with a side hustle, selling items online or getting a part-time job. And with 30% of Americans planning to ‘declutter’ their homes in 2021, there’s a good opportunity to find more than just loose change in those cushions and closets.
