I’
influential-magazine.com
m grateful to experience summer in Austin! I anticipate it’s going to be hot, especially if the past few weeks have been any indication. There’s something about living in Central Texas that stimulates so many aspects of my being. My creative side explodes with the creation of some of my best musical compositions. Because I want to rock new summer fashions, the warmer weather provides the incentive to stick more closely to my health & wellness regimes. And, there’s so much to love. There’s nothing more pleasant than savoring the Gentleman Jackson, my namesake cocktail created by the expert staff at Fixe, one my favorite fine dining establishments. Who doesn’t enjoy lively rooftop patios packing in crowds in downtown’s Rainey Street district, or in Rock Rose at the Domain. And, the music! I live in one of the best cities to experience worldclass musicians ready to tickle our ears with any type of music desired to complement the sunny days and humid nights ahead. So consider these Issues of InFluential Magazine, Spanish InFluential and Teen InFluential your invitation to the best of summer and an all-inclusive guide to living well. Inside, we’ve compiled great information dedicated to helping us live well – from summer ready beauty secrets, crave worthy grilling techniques, to providing useful etiquette tips for our young readers; there’s something for everyone. We’re pleased to feature Sarah Jessica Parker who shines a spotlight on the realities of living with potentially life-threatening allergies. Her story is inspiring for families who face similar challenges. I’m very thrilled to read about teen vlogger Josh Tryhane who just wants to make us smile. After reading his story in Teen InFluential, I’m expressed with this young man and his desire to make a positive impact. Enjoy your summer, stay hydrated and be sure to live well, laugh much and love hard! Sincerely,

Ways to Take Your
Grilling to a
Whole New Level
It’s time to grab the tongs and apron because it is officially grilling season.
Y
ou’ve waited months to reclaim your rightful position behind the grill, and it’s finally time to achieve your goal of making this your best grilling season yet. Now, you need a game plan. To take your place as the rightful master of the grill this year, consider following these five barbecuing tips.
1Keep
it clean. It may be the least glamorous part of your grilling experience, but keeping your grill clean is essential to delivering a quality product. A stiff wire brush is just the ticket along with plenty of oil once you’re done. Then, turn up the heat and enjoy preparing your meal on a clean, hot surface.
2
Direct and indirect grilling. Many summer chefs aren’t familiar with these terms, but mastering direct and indirect grilling is a great way to bolster your cooking skills. Direct grilling cooks the food directly over the heat source and is perfect for smaller, thinner pieces. Indirect grilling cooks the food near the heat source — but not directly over it. This is good for larger, thicker items.
3Don’t fill the grill. A
loaded grill is a mouth-watering sight but

Big Island Lava Glazed Sesame Chicken Sandwich Serves 6-8, Prep Time 15 mins, Cook Time 15 mins Ingredients - 2-3 lbs. chicken breasts, thinly cut - Lettuce - Tomato, sliced - Mayo - Sesame seeds, for garnish - 1 bottle King’s Hawaiian Big Island Lava Sauce - 1 package King’s Hawaiian Original Sweet Hawaiian Hamburger Buns
it jeopardizes the end result. Keep your grill at least 30 percent free so you have space to move food when the eventual flare up occurs.
4
Use the right tools. When it comes to rotating food, a reliable set of tongs beats a barbecue fork any day. Puncturing meat allows juices to escape prematurely, so don’t stab your food with a fork and never press burgers with a spatula.
5
Sit before you serve. For the best flavor, let your newly cooked meat sit for about 10 minutes before serving. The meat will be juicer and everyone will enjoy the meal a little bit more.
Ready to take your grilling game to the next level? Creativity and having the opportunity to experience new tastes and flavors is arguably one of the most rewarding aspects of grilling season. To get you fired up for the season ahead, the team at King’s Hawaiian has offered up this one-of-a-kind chicken sandwich recipe your family and friends will love. Made using their new brand new line of Hawaiian-inspired barbecue sauces, this sandwich is sure to be a mainstay at your seasonal events. For more recipes visit http://www.kingshawaiian.com/ recipes/. l
Preparation Step 1 Lightly season chicken with salt and pepper. Step 2 Grill chicken. As chicken is cooking, use a basting brush to glaze each side of the chicken with King’s Hawaiian Big Island Lava BBQ Sauce. Step 3 Toast King’s Hawaiian hamburger buns over indirect heat. Step 4 Build your sandwich: Bottom bun, mayo, lettuce, tomato, chicken, sesame seed garnish, extra King’s Hawaiian Big Island Lava BBQ Sauce, top bun.

For the
Love of Wine Industry transitions as wine becomes more casual.
W
hether it’s relaxing at home, dining out at a restaurant or celebrating with friends and family, Americans are enjoying wine at a wider variety of occasions than ever before. In fact, 85 percent of frequent wine drinkers now believe wine is equally appropriate for casual and formal settings alike. Today’s attitudes and behaviors toward wine drinking were recently captured in the second Gallo Consumer Wine Trends Survey, commissioned by E. & J. Gallo Winery. The survey of 1,000 frequent wine drinkers found that 82 percent enjoy between one and five glasses per week, which they enjoy at a wide range of occasions. “We are always glad to see Americans’ love of wine expand each year as they experiment with flavors, varietals and packaging formats,” said Stephanie Gallo, third generation family member and vice president of marketing at E. & J. Gallo Winery. “For more than 80 years, Gallo has strived

for excellence and will continue its family tradition of crafting innovative wines that cater to Americans’ evolving wine preferences.” A more casual approach to wine suggests shoppers are more likely to try new wines across a range of prices. In fact, more than one-third of survey respondents classified themselves as a “wine adventurer,” while only 3 percent of those surveyed selfidentified as “wine snobs.”
However, looks still matter in the wine aisle. Millennials are four times more likely than baby boomers to select a bottle of wine based on its label, frequently looking for personality and originality. Baby Boomers, by contrast, look for region of origin and tasting notes on the label.
To learn more the evolving wine culture, www.gallowinetrends.com. Exploring and Experimenting More sipping occasions means more opportunities to try new wines. The top factors that inspire a frequent wine drinker to try something new are recommendations from friends, family members and coworkers. Additionally, 86 percent of wine drinkers would be encouraged by a server, bartender or sommelier recommendation, followed closely by a recommendation from a wine store employee. Not surprisingly, millennials are more influenced by the digital world than older generations. Survey data shows millennials are more likely to be encouraged to try a new wine if it is featured prominently and positively in the media or if it is recommended on social media. Selecting Your Sips The occasion itself still influences the wine choice for many. While wine
Thinking Inside the Box Mirroring the changes in wine drinkers’ shopping habits, the wine industry is thinking “inside the box” these days. Boxed wine has evolved considerably in the minds of consumers, thanks in large part to its convenience. The extended freshness of boxed wine allows wine drinkers to enjoy it at their own pace and the box’s portability allows for easy transport to all types of occasions. In fact, 1 in 4 surveyed agree that boxed wine is best for large social gatherings and is becoming higher quality.
drinkers identified Chardonnay as the most popular choice for casual get-togethers, Cabernet Sauvignon was most often the front-runner for formal environments.
Wine in a can is a relatively new concept that more than one-fourth of frequent wine drinkers expressed interest in trying – particularly for outdoor excursions. Among fans of alternative packaging, outdoor events remained the primary occasion for the use of these products, which also include mini bottles and tetra packs.

“The increase in popularity of these new packaging options is undeniably making wine more portable, practical and possible to enjoy anywhere,” Gallo said. “A single-serve package, in particular, offers a convenient option for those who reluctantly grab a beer simply because it is easier.” Overcoming Wine Fears As wine culture becomes more approachable, common fears among wine drinkers are less prevalent. The survey found that fears, such as mispronouncing a wine’s name or being judged for wine choices, are still on the minds of some wine drinkers, but those who enjoy it regularly are not dramatically affected by these concerns. “As an industry, we must continue working to remove these barriers in

order to nurture wine’s expansion into everyday occasions,” Gallo said. “By exploring the more emotional implications of wine culture and sharing these findings broadly, we hope to welcome more people into wine.” Pairings for Every Occasion When it comes to food and wine pairings, the proper match can exponentially improve the eating experience – no matter what the occasion. The key is to choose wines and foods that complement each other in their components, richness and textures. To help get you started, Gallo Family Vineyards recommends the following pairings: Fresh fish: Complement garlic butter baked salmon or another favorite fish with a glass of Chardonnay for its rich fruit flavor and lush texture or Sauvignon Blanc for a more crisp finish

Barbecue: Pair grilled items, such as shish kabobs, burgers or corn on the cob, with a Riesling for its vivid and sweet flavors. Red Meat: Enhance the robust taste of roast beef or grilled steak with Cabernet Sauvignon for its black fruit and spice notes. Chicken: Serving an ovenroasted chicken with mediumbodied Pinot Noir will bring subtle flavors of cherry and sweet fruit. Dessert: Complement a slice of cheesecake, chocolate covered strawberry or chocolate chip cookie with Moscato. The light-bodied, refreshing flavors of peach, honey and ripe citrus are a perfect match. Pretty much anything: Rosé is often underappreciated when it comes to food pairings. From spicy Mexican to chicken salad, pecorino cheese and peach cobbler, it is an excellent option for dishes year-round. l

Get Your Car Summer Ready Car care tips for safe driving
24
fluential July / August 2016
influential-magazine.com
Sun may be shining and summer breezes blowing, but before you put those windows down and settle in for a leisurely drive to soak up that fresh air, your car needs some freshening of its own.
R
egular car care helps ensure your vehicle looks and runs its best, and timing your car care to the seasons can help ensure all of your equipment is in top condition to protect your safety. Ensure you and your car are well-protected and ready for summer with this car care checklist. Give Your Car a Checkup An all-over maintenance checkup is a good starting point to get a pulse on your car’s condition. A multipoint inspection can help alert you to signs of wear or damage on parts such as your belts, which can weaken as a result of colder weather, and your brakes, which are critical for safe driving. Your engine relies on clean oil for smooth operation, so if it’s time for a change (usually every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, depending on manufacturer recommendations) you can schedule a change to coincide with your service appointment. Keep Your View Safe and Clear Keeping your windshield clear is an obvious necessity for everyday visibility, but the quality of your wiper blades is even more important in inclement weather. Old or damaged blades may not be up to the task of keeping your line of sight clear during a heavy downpour. When it comes to choosing new blades, give careful attention to performance. Traditional metal wiper blades, installed on many new cars, have exposed suspension components that can become damaged with exposure to extreme weather. Newer vehicles may include beam blades, with a pre-sprung steel beam designed specifically for that vehicle. However, many replacement beam blade designs are compromised to fit a large array of vehicle

models and do not properly adapt to the varying curvature of windshields. This results in reduced wrap and contact pressure on the windshield, as well as poor wiping performance. A better option is hybrid blades, such as Michelin Stealth Hybrid wiper blades, which feature an exclusive Smart Flex technology that automatically adjusts wiper blade contact pressure across the curvature of the windshield for improved wiping performance. Engineered for durable wiping in extreme weather conditions, the wiper frame and suspension system are completely covered to protect the blades from weather-related damage. The Michelin EZ-Lok Connector System allows for a quick and simple blade replacement. Learn more at MichelinWipers.com.

If your vehicle has a rear wiper, remember to replace it, too. Check Your Traction Your tires are another of your car’s essential safety features. Excess or uneven tire wear can be extremely dangerous in wet and slick road conditions. If your tires can’t get adequate traction, you may find yourself hydroplaning or losing control. What’s more, tires are an expensive investment, so before embarking on your next road trip, make sure your tires are properly inflated, balanced and rotated. This can help ensure you get the most mileage out of your tires before needing to replace them. Show Your Shine Sound operations aside, you’ll get more enjoyment out of your car when it looks as great as it runs. A thorough

cleaning of the exterior after the harsh winter and rainy spring months helps whisk away any damaging substances, such as the salt used to melt ice and snow, and any residue left behind by spring showers. Protect and preserve your vehicle with products, such as Barrett-Jackson Auto Care’s full line of interior and exterior products. Liquid Wax, a signature product in the line, is specially designed with Carnauba wax to achieve a long-lasting, deep shine with no powdery residue. Barrett-Jackson Wash & Wax saves time by lifting away dirt and enhancing shine in one step, while the rapid detailer is great for those in between touch ups. For an all-over shine to complete the freshly cleaned look, Tire Shine is a quick, no-hassle way to maintain sleek, wet-look tires. Make sure to select a tire shine that will not sling off on your car when driving. Find more information about these and other products designed to keep your car looking flawless at barrett-jacksonautocare.com. Once the exterior is complete, turn your attention inside. Pick up any trash or debris, vacuum and wipe down all interior surfaces. A moisturizing treatment will help clean
and condition leather, preventing it from drying out and cracking. Also give interior glass a wipe down for the clearest visibility possible and be sure to pick an interior protectant that doesn’t leave behind a greasy residue to help renew and protect all interior surfaces, including plastic, vinyl, rubber and trim. Slick Tips for Driving on Wet Roads Ensure your tires have a safe margin of tread. Replace any bulbs, especially for brake lights, immediately. Ensure your headlights are clean for optimal road visibility. Always use signals to alert other drivers of lane changes and turns. Slow your speed before turning and avoid braking while making the turn. Avoid abrupt steering changes. Increase your following distance to allow longer stopping time for a sudden brake. If you hydroplane, do not attempt to accelerate your way out or brake. Release pressure on the gas pedal and steer your way to safety. Never attempt to enter or cross a roadway covered in water. l

Gas Station Myth or Fact:
What You Need to Know When When You Refuel
On any given day, some 40 million Americans stop at gas stations to fill their tanks.

or many, it’s a weekly routine, one they don’t spend much time analyzing, but are there things you think you know about your fill-up that just aren’t true?
doesn’t know the finer details of pumping protocol. “I’ve heard plenty of gas station tips and tricks, but I’m not always sure which ones I should believe.”
Andrea Kaufman considers herself a fairly conscientious auto owner, but the St. Louis Park, Minnesota resident admits she
Let’s set the record straight as energy experts dispel three common gas station myths.
Myth
1
Myth
It’s Best to Buy Gas Early in the Day. The theory is that gasoline is denser at cooler temperatures, so you’ll get more fuel per gallon early in the morning. While the basic science is correct, the experts at Consumer Reports point out two practical reasons why this is a myth. First, most gas stations store fuel in doublewalled underground tanks that keep gas at steady temperatures. Second, even if there were variations, the volume difference between gasoline at 75 versus 60 degrees Fahrenheit is just 1 percent - not enough to be noticeable at the pump.
Myth
3
All Brands of Gas are the Same. Like more than two-thirds of Americans, Kaufman buys gas primarily based on price and convenience. “I don’t know if there is a difference between brands,” she says. While all gasoline sold in the U.S. must meet federal requirements for performance, not all gas is the same.
2
It’s Dangerous to Use a Cell Phone Near Gas Pumps.
According to the Federal Communications Commission, there is no documented incident of a wireless phone causing a gas station fire or explosion. It’s true many fuel companies post stickers on pumps warning motorists to turn off phones while refueling as cell phones could be a distraction. But the Petroleum Equipment Institute (PEI) reports the most likely cause of fire at the pumps is static electricity created by drivers sliding in and out of vehicles. For safe refueling, PEI recommends you turn off the car engine, refrain from smoking and stay outside the vehicle.
The auto industry has a certification system for fuel. Top Tier certified gasoline includes additional detergents and fuel additives that remove engine deposits that can hurt fuel economy. “Today’s more fuel-efficient engines need higherquality fuel for peak performance,” says Akhtar Hussain, refined fuels expert at CHS, which markets Cenex brand fuels at more than 1,450 gas stations in 19 states. “Cenex TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline provides 2.5 times the cleaning power
of conventional gasoline and removes deposits for better fuel economy and reduced emissions.” Our Top Tier certified gasoline keeps newer high-precision engines clean and helps older engines perform better, he adds. “It helps clean your engine every time you fill your tank.” Cenex TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is available at every Cenex location. To find one near you, visit www.cenex.com/locations.
So much for those tank-filling myths. Now it’s time to fuel up and enjoy the drive. l July / August 2016

Check Credit Before
U
p to 80 percent of Americans still think owning a home is part of the American dream, according to a recent Harris Poll. With home sales reaching the highest pace in nearly six years, it may be time to finally get packing. Don’t jump too fast, though. While new rules have relaxed the credit standards imposed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (two of the biggest government loan guarantors), making it possible for many young first-time buyers to take the leap into home ownership, there are some important considerations to make long before hiring the movers. What is a Credit Score and Why Does it Matter? Holding down a steady job, paying your bills on time, keeping your credit card balances low and only opening new credit when absolutely needed are all factors that go into your credit score. While you may not see a huge difference between 698 and 700, those two points can actually end up costing thousands of dollars.
30
“Before applying for any loan, be sure to check the state of your credit,” said Scott Smith, president of CreditRepair.com. “Owning a home is a big part of the American dream, but home loans can be very complex and doing all of the proper research from the beginning, including completing any necessary credit repair up front, will make the process that much simpler.” Resources such as CreditRepair. com offer a free online credit score estimator to help check your score. Anything below 620 ranks as poor; 620-699 is fair; 700-749 is good and anything over 750 is excellent. Home Loans and a Down Payment While it is possible to buy a home without a mortgage, most people don’t have that kind of cash. However, you will need at least 5 to 20 percent of the sale price in cash in order to qualify for a conventional loan. Getting a mortgage can be difficult and frustrating, even for people with near-perfect credit. If you find yourself with a sub-optimal credit score and you are in the market for a new home,
fluential July / August 2016
Smith suggests taking these steps before making a trip to the bank:
•
Get a copy of your credit report. You are entitled to one free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus each year by law (in some states, you are entitled to more than one free report a year). Analyze your credit report. Carefully scrutinize your report to identify any errors that can help boost your score and request corrections for all erroneous information. Keep all credit card accounts open. Closing an unused credit card account can actually negatively affect your credit. Fifteen percent of your score is based on credit history. Make all payments on time. Payment history accounts for a whopping 35 percent of your credit score. Give yourself time. Good things do come to those who wait. Take the time to repair and build up your credit. It could save you thousands of dollars down the road.

Mistakes New
Homeowners Make That Attract Pests
32
fluential July / August 2016
R
onHarrison,Ph.D.,entomologist with Orkin, recommends new homeowners avoid making these five mistakes:
1Overlooking Tiny Cracks
Even tiny cracks and crevices in the foundation, doorways and walls where pipes enter the home could be inviting ants, roaches, spiders, rodents and other pests inside. A rat can squeeze through an opening as small as a quarter and a mouse can fit through a hole the size of a dime. Cockroaches, ants and spiders can enter through tiny crevices, too. Pests are attracted to shelter, food and water. Homeowners should promptly clean up all water and food spills, seal any cracks and crevices around doors, windows and pipes and install weather stripping around and under all doors, including garage doors.
2Obtaining
Second-hand Furniture Buying a home is an expensive investment and it may be tempting to save money with furniture from a thrift shop or garage sale, but bed bugs, spiders and even scorpions have been known to dwell in second-hand upholstered furniture. Once inside, they can spread from room to room. That’s why it’s important to inspect and quarantine – for several months if possible – all second-hand furniture before bringing it inside your home.
influential-magazine.com
Spring is house-hunting season and with warmer temperatures and increased rain, it is also the season when pesky creatures can invade homes. Even minor flaws in a new home should not be ignored as they can potentially lead to pest damage.
Brick and mortar homes are not termite-proof as they have wooden components, such as framing and flooring that can host termite infestations. It’s important to work with a licensed professional to provide regular inspections.
5Not Repairing Leaks
3Ignoring Insulation
A home’s attic can be a gateway inside for many pests, such as rodents and cockroaches that nest in insulation. It’s important to inspect insulation for pest activity and damage: insulation that is wet, matted down, chewed or covered with droppings. New insulation technology incorporates materials specifically designed to help deter household pests.
4Ignoring Flooring
House foundations, wood framing, furniture and shelves are all possible feeding sites for termites. In spring, termites can be seen swarming around windows or doors. Other signs of termite activity include buckling wood, swollen floors and ceilings and areas that appear to be suffering from slight water damage.
and Siding Damage Termites are called “silent destroyers” because they may be secretly hiding and thriving in a home or yard without immediate signs of damage. They cause more than $5 billion in damage every year in the United States, according to the National Pest Management Association.
Minor leaks may seem to be just that –minor– but, leaks or condensation, combined with increasing temperatures in the spring, can create ideal conditions for cockroaches and other pests. American cockroaches, “camel crickets” and springtails can enter homes through tiny cracks and are attracted to damp areas, both in the attic or crawl space and indoors in the basement, kitchen or bathroom. Small steps make a big difference. Fix leaking faucets, water pipes and A/C units and eliminate standing water on the roof or in gutters to help prevent an infestation. Cool Summer Renovation
Ideas Keep Homes More Comfortable When the Heat is On
Once spring cleanup is done, you may feel ready to tackle some renovation projects this summer.
I
f so, you’re not alone: 62 percent of homeowners plan to undertake a home improvement project this year, according to a Harris poll. Homeowners will renovate to improve their home’s appearance, livability and energy efficiency, the survey found. It’s possible to make renovations that are stylish and also reduce your energy bill. With temperatures heating up this summer, take on renovations that not only make your home more beautiful, but make it cool and comfortable as well.
34
Here are a handful of projects that can accomplish those goals: Replacement Windows You’re probably aware quality new windows can help your home retain heat in the winter, but did you know they can also keep your home cooler in the summer? By tightening your home’s envelope and reflecting heat, energy-efficient windows can help maintain more even temperatures inside your home. What’s more, because they’re energy-efficient, new windows can help your heatingventilation and cooling (HVAC) systems operate more efficiently. Air Conditioning If you live in an older home, you may not have the space you need to install a traditional central HVAC unit with ductwork. Adding ductwork can be costly and troublesome, yet you probably don’t love the look of window air conditioners, either. Duct-free split systems like LG’s Art Cool Line provide plenty of cooling power from wall-mounted
fluential July / August 2016
units that can be subtle or splashy, depending on your design vision. An outdoor unit works in tandem with up to eight interior units for individual room-by-room temperature control. LG offers three interior Art Cool unit styles, including a customizable picture frame, a flat panel with a modern charcoal mirror finish and a traditional unit in sleek white. All feature a hand-held remote control operation, varying fan speeds, quiet operation and auto operation modes for the utmost in comfort this summer. Window Treatments Limiting the amount of sunlight that enters and warms a room is an important way to supplement your home’s cooling units. Summer décor cries out for light, airy window treatments, but you don’t have to give up that bright look to better control sunlight. Window blinds or shades in a slightly darker hue can work well with a lighter looking window treatment while still allowing you to limit sun exposure when you draw them shut. What’s more, cellular
shades also have an insulating effect to enhance your windows’ ability to reflect heat in the summer. Cooler Lighting and Appliances Electrical appliances and incandescent light bulbs all contribute to the amount of ambient heat in your home. As you’re renovating, replace incandescent bulbs with energyefficient options that give off far less heat, such as LEDs or CFLs. Most light fixtures are now able to use these cooler bulbs, so replacing them is easy - and can also help reduce your electricity bill since they use about 80 percent less energy than incandescents, according to the Energy Star program. You can also reduce heat output from appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers and
dryers by upgrading to more energy-efficient models. Outdoor Improvements You can also make outdoor renovation choices that will enhance your home’s beauty and help keep the interior cooler. Strategically plant shade trees to shield windows from the hot sun in summer time. Or, consider adding awnings that will shade windows and doors. For patios and decks, choose materials that reflect heat away from your home and outdoor spaces. Finally, paint siding in a lighter color to help minimize heat absorption. Summer home renovation projects can be exciting, beautiful and energy efficient when you keep a cool head about your design choices. l

Wise Up to the
Benefits of a Smart Home
Smart homes make life easier and more convenient.

ho wouldn’t love being able to control lighting, entertainment and temperature from their couch - or from anywhere for that matter? Whether you’re at work or on vacation, smart devices alert you to what’s going on at home and help you stay connected and protected. “Since inventing the world’s first residential smoke alarm, First Alert has been at the forefront of advancement in home safety technology,” says Tom Russo, president of First Alert. “Our

is one of the biggest benefits of a smart home. Devices that deliver notifications about everything from intruders to water leaks help homeowners react quickly and avoid major disasters.
According to the experts at First Alert, the following are just a few of the many benefits of giving your home a “smart” makeover:
For families with children, smart devices can provide parents with added peace of mind. You can safeguard doors and drawers, such as the liquor cabinet or gate to the pool, with connected contact sensors. With smart locks and cameras, you’ll know when your kids get home

from school, and can ensure their safety when the doorbell rings with mobile access to live video. There are even smart safes with motion detecting technology and access notification that are ideal for keeping weapons and medications safely locked away. Convenience and Customization Convenience is one of the most common reasons people purchase smart devices. These high-tech products streamline common tasks by giving users remote access to everything from heating and cooling systems to multimedia devices, kitchen appliances, security features and even a forgotten garage door. You have the ability to program devices to your family’s specific needs and preferences, and the flexibility to choose which features to integrate into your smart system to create a connected home custom designed to cater to your specific lifestyle. Ease and Expansion Unlike their complicated predecessors, many of today’s smart home products can be easily installed, and you certainly don’t need to buy everything all at one time. One of the best places to start building a smart home system is with essential devices like a thermostat, or smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
existing interconnected hardwired alarms, so users do not have to replace all of their existing alarms at once. The Apple HomeKit platform makes it easy to add new alarms and other devices to expand a smart home system. The alarm can be easily tested or silenced using the Onelink Home app on an iOS device (iPhone, iPad and iPod touch) or Apple Watch. In the case of an emergency, the Onelink Alarm will instantly alert the homeowner via a notification on their mobile device, allowing the user to assess the situation and alert authorities if needed, or silence the device in the event of a false alarm, like burnt toast. Energy, Efficiency and Cost Savings A major part of what makes “smart” devices smart is their ability to save users money through improved energy efficiency. Lights can be programmed to turn off automatically when no one is in a room. A thermostat can be set to
let the indoor temperature drop during the day before returning it to a more comfortable level just before residents arrive home in the evening. You can even track energy usage and expenditures to determine ways in which your family can reduce consumption. In addition to all of these benefits, automated home products are fun to use. Whether setting lighting and music from your iPhone for a surprise romantic evening at home, or keeping an eye on your house from a tablet while lounging on an exotic beach, you’ll find home automation easy and enjoyable. e’re sitting too much and it’s dangerous. The average American spends more than seven hours sitting every day, and the more time you sit, the higher your risk of serious, potentially life-threatening health problems such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. So, what can you do about it? Fortunately, there are simple changes you can make during the day —anywhere, even at the work place— to improve your wellness and reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes. Park a few blocks away from the office each morning and walk to work. This allows you to start off your mornings energized and ready to take on the workday. If you take public transportation, get off one stop earlier to squeeze in some light exercise before 8 a.m.
Stand up and stretch. If you don’t have time to walk around the office every 90 minutes, use the opportunity to stand up and stretch instead. Stretching is a great way to increase energy levels, reduce muscle tension and get your body moving.
Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Waiting for the elevator often takes just as long as walking up the stairs, so why not use this opportunity to get your heart rate up? Plus, you’ll get the chance to work your leg muscles.
Pace around the office during conference calls. Conference calls are the perfect time to be active. Put clients and coworkers on speaker, or use your mobile phone during meetings to move around without any trouble.
Get up and move around the office once every 90 minutes. When you’re nose-deep in work, it’s easy to lose track of time. Set up reminders on your phone or email every 60-90 minutes to get up and do a quick lap around the office. You can use this time to fill up your water bottle, go to the bathroom or catch up with coworkers.
Do chair exercises at your desk. You’ve been wanting to tone your arms for the summer — why not achieve your goals at the office? When you need a break, do a few reps of chair sits. You can even alternate between chair exercises and push ups!
Ask questions and discuss issues face-to-face. Rather than sending an email every time you have a question, go to your coworker’s office to discuss the issue face-to-face. This gives you a good excuse to get moving and a chance to more effectively hash out solutions in person.
Hold standing or walking meetings. Many coworkers will welcome the opportunity to stand and stretch their legs for a moment. If you have a two-person meeting, consider going for a walk.
Use your lunch break to move around outside. So many Americans today work through their lunch break. When possible, take advantage of this time to walk outside and soak in the nice weather. Fresh air and vitamin D are often all you need to stay focused and push through the afternoon slump.
Fidget when you work. Small movements and quick exercise breaks add up, especially in a sedentary work place, so challenge yourself to stand, stretch or even tap a foot to bring motion into otherwise still parts of your day. Just remember to keep it professional!
Making a point to move throughout the day puts you on the right track toward wellness. For more ideas on how to increase physical activity and maintain a healthy lifestyle, download the Association’s e-tool kit today to incorporate the principles and activities of National Get Fit Don’t Sit Day into the workday and beyond. l

ummer styles call for a whole new approach to body care. You can boost your summer beauty regimen by giving your body extra attention from head to toe and adding a few of these expert tips and products from European Wax Center to your routine, giving you the confidence to show off your skin at every warm-weather occasion. Find more tips and products to be gorgeous in your own skin at waxcenter.com. Hair Removal Tips One hair can make a big difference in how you look and feel, especially since you’re going to be showing off more skin this summer. European Wax Center’s Chief Wax Expert and Educator Melanie Gilliland offers the following tips to keep hair contained to and growing only where you want it:
•
Never tweeze ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs would be much less of an issue if they were left alone and treated with an ingrown hair serum or ingrown hair wipes. Picking ingrown hairs makes them 10 times worse and can scar the skin. If the hair is partially outside of the skin and you can easily grab it with tweezers without breaking skin or digging in the least, feel free to remove it. If it requires digging, popping or squeezing, hide your tweezers and leave it alone.

It’s time to get your body ready for tanks and shorts, bikinis at the beach, evenings out with friends and vacationing with family – all of which mean showing off your beautiful skin. (approximately every 3-4 weeks), which will also help accelerate results, such as hair thinning and growing in more sparsely. Waxing too often (when the hair is too short) will actually be more painful and if the hair is too long, it indicates that you have waited too long and now the hair has had more time to root itself. Banish Ingrown Hairs Make banishing bumps and ingrown hairs disappear quickly and easily while visibly helping slow the regrowth of hair between waxes with convenient, single-use Smooth Me Ingrown Hair Wipes that help nip pesky ingrown hairs anyplace, anytime. These portable wipes are infused with alpha and beta hydroxy acids, and prevent bumps when used daily (twice daily for existing breakouts).
Say Bye, Bye to Dead Skin You can wave goodbye to dry, dead skin and accelerate cell renewal without any harsh abrasives and prevent ingrown hairs by helping keep hair follicles clear after waxing with Reveal Me Body Exfoliating Gel. Naturally derived fruit enzymes eliminate dry, dull surface cells and support natural cell turnover, and Comfort Blend calms, nourishes and restores skin. While it’s gentle enough for daily use, it’s recommended at least three times a week to help maintain beautiful skin. Give Your Skin a Radiant Glow Since you’ll be exposing more skin this summer, make sure it has an undeniably radiant glow. Cheeky, Graceful and Sensual Strut Body Polishes are high-performing exfoliators that help prevent unsightly bumps and ingrown hairs, visibly slowing the growth of hair between waxes to keep skin smooth and looking its best. l

Summer is a time for playground fun, camping, boating, swimming, biking, and other fun outdoor activities. Playground falls, lawnmower accidents, campfire and fire pit burns are some common and potentially lifealtering childhood injuries that happen during summer months.
D
arren Rottmann knows first-hand how easily accidents can happen, particularly in the summer months when outdoor activities increase. He lost his leg in a lawn mower accident when he was 3 1/2 years old. He was treated at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — St. Louis, where he was fitted for different prosthetic legs as he grew. Despite his injury, Rottmann was able to walk then run, and eventually, play baseball, basketball and football. Now 37 years old, Rottmann is a certified prosthetist at the same hospital where he was treated. He was inspired to help children the same way he was helped as a boy. “I started out as a technician building the prosthetic legs but have worked my way into patient care,”he said. “I think it puts the kids’ minds and their parents’ minds at ease to see that somebody else has been through it.”Today, Rottmann is helping Shriners Hospitals for Children encourage kids to become “Superheroes of Summer Safety” by learning and following a few simple rules of safe summer play. “We’re here to help kids who need us, but we’d prefer that a child isn’t injured in the first place,” Rottmann said. “These tips, like keeping children inside while mowing the lawn, are good reminders for all of us.”

Including the St. Louis location, there are 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children in the United States, Canada and Mexico that provide specialized care to children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate, regardless of their family’s ability to pay. “Sustaining a serious injury can be a life-altering event for a child,” said Jerry Gantt, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Shriners Hospitals for Children. “We see patients every day with injuries caused by accidents and we are committed to raising awareness about how to stay safe.” Here are some tips from Rottmann and Shriners Hospitals for Children to help your family enjoy a fun, injury-free summer. Go Outside and Play The physical and mental health benefits of outdoor play are great for children. It provides opportunities for exercise, creative expression, stress reduction and access to a free and natural source of vitamin D – sunlight. Before sending kids out to play, make sure they always wear shoes to protect feet from cuts, scrapes and splinters, and wear sunscreen to protect from sunburns and harmful ultra-violet rays. Playground 101 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger every year for playground-related injuries. Before your kids head to the playground, keep these precautions in mind: Choose parks and playgrounds that are appropriate for their age and offer shock-absorbing surfaces. Teach children that pushing and shoving on the playground can result in accidents and injuries. Remind kids to go down the slide one at a time and to wait until the slide is completely clear before taking their turn. Teach them to always sit facing forward with their legs straight in front of them and to never slide down headfirst. Remind children to swing sitting down. Encourage them to wait until the swing stops before getting off and to be careful when walking in front of moving swings.

Make a Safe Splash While playing poolside may be a blast, Safe Kids Worldwide reports drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for children ages one to four and it is the third-leading cause of injury-related death among those under 19. Additionally, the University of Michigan Health Systems estimate that about 6,000 people under age 14 are hospitalized because of a diving injury each year, with one in five sustaining a spinal cord injury. Prevent accidents and injuries with these tips to ensure your family’s safety around water: Instruct children to never swim alone or go near water without an adult present. Give children your undivided attention when they are swimming or are near any body of water. Always jump in feet first to check the depth before diving into any body of water. Never dive in the shallow end of the pool or into above-ground pools.

Fun on the Water Boating, tubing and other water sports can be great fun but can also be dangerous. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, nearly 71 percent of all boating fatalities are drownings, 85 percent of which are a result of not wearing a life jacket. Here is what you can do to enjoy the water safely: Always have children wear a Coast Guardapproved, properly fitted life jacket while on a boat, around an open body of water or when participating in water sports. Educate yourself. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 86 percent of boating accident deaths involve boaters who have not completed a safety course. Always check water conditions and forecasts before going out on the water.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, 126,035 children ages 19 and under were seen in emergency rooms for fire and burn injuries in 2013. Use these tips to keep children safe around fires, fireworks, grills and other heat sources:

Teach kids to never play with matches, gasoline, lighter fluid or lighters. Make a habit of placing these items out of the reach of young children. Do not leave children unattended near grills, campfires, fire pits or bonfires. Always have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby whenever there is an open flame. Take your child to a doctor or hospital immediately if he or she is injured in a fire or by fireworks. Leave fireworks to the professionals.

To see more tips, find activity pages and learn how to become a “Superhero of Summer Safety,” visit shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/safesummer. Mowing Matters Like Rottmann, thousands of children are injured in lawn mower accidents each year, some severely. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of 4,000 children under the age of 14 were treated in emergency rooms for lawn mower-related injuries annually from 2010-2014. Lawn mower injuries account for a large percentage of accidental, partial or complete amputations, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. To avoid accidents involving lawn mowers, keep these tips in mind: Teach children to never play on or around a lawn mower, even when it is not in use. They should never be permitted to walk beside, in front of or behind a moving mower. Children under six years of age should be kept inside the home while mowing. Children should be at least 12 years of age before operating a push lawn mower and at least 16 years of age before operating a riding lawn mower. l

•
Ayuda a proteger tu piel, manteniéndola suave.

as personas toxicas se encuentran constantemente observándonos, criticándonos y enjuiciándonos.

Maintain a Healthy Friendship with the Sun:
• •
SPF of 45 protects skin from 98% of the sun’s UV rays and reapply every 3 or 4 hours. Don’t skip out on sunscreen to tan because skin cancer is worse than pale skin. Instead buy sun tan lotion to apply gradually every day. No matter what you do, whether it is shopping or chilling by the lake, always apply sunscreen to your face. To fight dry and aged skin, apply coconut oil over the body and face to regenerate and rehydrate after a sun bath.
• •
Water Safety:
• • • •
Drowning is the leading cause of death for children under four. Stay alert when around children in the water, drowning doesn’t look like the movies. Often times it is quick and silent. Try not to swim after eating a lot of food to avoid cramps. At the beach, stay aware. Rip tides also happen quickly. If caught, stay calm and swim diagonally towards the beach.
Fighting the Heat:
• • • •
Staying hydrated is super important to staying cool and energized. If you spend a long day in the sun, drink coconut water for quick hydration and antioxidants. If coconut water is not up your alley, try mixing coconut water with some sparkling juice to give it a different taste. For a healthy, cool snack try eating frozen grapes.
The Great Outdoors:

Wearing hats is a great way to protect your head when spending time in the woods and in the sun. This year, there is a big push for avoiding mosquito bites. Be sure to apply bug spray if you plan on going anywhere humid. Always pick up after yourself when outdoors, trash hurts both the plants and the animals in the environment. l

ur looks are typically our first priority. We all know a great outward appearance is what gives us that confidence we need to make a good first impression. The confidence we need to talk to that cute guy / girl you’ve been eyeing since last semester, or to perform well in class or on the field. Here are a few backpack essentials for every guy and gal that will keep you looking and feeling fresh to keep your mind off your insecurities and on your studies. And hey, they may even land you a date!
1. Lip Balm/ Chapstick: Dry
lips are never attractive. Ladies keep a stash of EOS lip balm, $2.99 each, drugstore.com, in your bag at all times. They are deliciously organic and come in assorted colors and flavors. Guys, you shouldn’t neglect your lips either. Burt’s Bee’s Lip Balm, $3.29 Walgreens.com, is a great option for you. It’s color free and contains peppermint oil for a fresh cooling sensation that even you will appreciate.
Concealer by Urban Decay, $28, ulta. com, in your bag at all times. It’s smooth even consistency blends perfectly with most skin types. This necessity is not just for the ladies, guys you can benefit from this must-have as well.
3. Deodorant: Whether you are active in sports or tend to have that “not so fresh feeling” towards the peak of the afternoon, a good natural deodorant such as Lavender Vanilla spray deodorant by Honest Company, $8.95, Honest. com, is a great back-pack essential for her. Gentlemen try Burt’s Bees sage deodorant, $7.99, Walgreens.com, to keep you smelling manly, in a clean way. Why choose natural deodorant? Although it might be a change for some, natural deodorants are safer to use because they do not contain harsh metallics, artificial ingredients or titanium which are carcinogens that have been known to cause cancer.
4. Shine Control: Whether your skin gets oily due to make-up foundation or just natural oil build up, Clean and Clear oil absorbing sheets, $5 Walgreens. com, really do the trick! There are other brands out there that claim to work just as well, but nothing compares to the Clean and Clear brand. These little sheets leave your skin with a “just powdered” finish without the powder and they do not remove any make-up, just the oils from your skin. A must have for both him and her.
2. Concealer: For those unexpected breakouts that have a way of ruining your day, be sure to keep some Naked Skin

Why Manners Matter Teen
kWRITTEN BY Tyler Knight
1
As we grow up, our parents tell us we need to practice good manners. But do manners really matter? The answer First and foremost, to this question is, good manners YES, good manners show politeness. do matter. Here are Being courteous to others, no matter when three reasons why or where you meet them, evokes good good manners are emotions for the entire conversation. Some examples include saying “hello” very important and smiling to a passerby, opening a door in your everyday life. open for someone, saying “please” and “thank you”, and not staring or pointing at someone.

influential-magazine.com
When you have good manners, such as using proper etiquette at the dinner table, it demonstrates to others you care. You exemplify respect for others when you are polite and courteous during the time you are with them. For example, the proper etiquette for a date night (depending on the setting) could be dressing in a nice outfit such as a button down shirt with jeans or slacks, nice shoes, and a belt for the guy and a simple, classy dress with a touch of jewelry for the gal. Other proper etiquette for a date night, or dinner event might include placing your napkin in your lap when you are seated, keeping your elbows off the table, sitting up straight, waiting to eat until everyone gets their food, chewing with your mouth closed, and not talking while your mouth is full.
3
The third reason why good manners are important in your everyday life is they are what may “make you or break you.”
All in all, it is important to be aware of the situation in which you find yourself. When you know someone doesn’t use foul language and you know you normally do, hold off speaking those words. When you’re at a formal event, speak appropriately and use proper etiquette. When someone is rude to you, try to be gracious in return. Good manners may be the deciding factor in your achievement of some of life’s greatest things. l
As you get older you’ll notice two of the most important things in life are maintaining relationships and having a good job. However, these things may be hard to accomplish if you don’t have good manners. As previously stated, good manners demonstrate courtesy, so if you are practicing bad manners you may come off as being rude and inconsiderate. If you seem rude and distant it will make it more difficult for you to pass your interview with a potential employer for your dream job, or starting a relationship with someone you’ve just met.

Teen Your Decisions, Society and Social Media -
Are You Really Making Wake up, check your Twitter feed, stretch, get out of bed, scroll through your Facebook, go to the kitchen, pour a bowl of cereal, sit down, post a photo on your Instagram, eat a spoonful of cereal, turn or the morning news, continue eating and watching the screen kWRITTEN BY NICOLE GLENN,

oes this routine sound vaguely familiar? Is this morning ritual, flooded with media and technology, spot on? According to a new study from a group called Common Sense Media, teenagers today spend up to nine hours a day on various screen devices. It’s shaping the teenagers of today’s lives. What we spend our majority of time engaging in is how we learn what to accept as truth, what we find as right and wrong, what success and failure looks like, and so forth. We want to know what is going on in the world, what our friends are doing, what the newest trend is, etc. from the get go every morning.

Your Own Decisions? influential-magazine.com
We may not realize it, but a huge source of our decision making comes from what social media and the news reports feed us. According to Symbolic Interactionism, a sociological theory, humans act in accord to their interpretation of the actions of others. We have the ability to think about our reaction and how they will affect the situation, and then finally react. Through socialization; however, we grow up learning what is and what is not acceptable to society. We decide how to act and think according to what will help us be in assimilation with the social norms.
Social assimilation is important in order for societies to function. However, that does not mean you have to accept automatically everything you see on social media as right or wrong without questioning it first. It’s an interesting thought to think about where our “knowledge” comes from, but even more important is making sure our “knowledge” is reliable and valid. Deductive reasoning is a good way to think about controversial topics, but we must be wary that our premises are valid so we aren’t digging ourselves into a hole of ignorance. One of the main sources of information for teenagers is social media. Civil Rights Issues, for example, have taken to the media to push different campaigns. When a teenager is flooded by the same
topic over and over again, written by unknown authors, how is one to know the truth behind the matter? “You can trust everything on the internet, right?” Wrong! Too often, people are willing to accept what they read on their Twitter feed as truth, or as morally right or wrong, simply because it’s what the majority of other people posting on the internet at that time say. The desire to fit in has become such a strong force in teenagers’ decision contributing to them no longer making decisions on their own. “If I say what I think they might think I’m weird. What if they disagree? Will this post make me popular? I wonder if I can make this go viral?”
If a movement was started and was the new, cool thing to do, how many people would jump on board because social media says it’s the way to be in the popular crowd? What if that movement was bad for your health and could kill you if you weren’t careful? Remember the cinnamon challenge? Perhaps you or someone you knew even participated in this world wide social media fad that involved swallowing a teaspoon of cinnamon in under a minute without aid from water. It wasn’t until after the movement had spread like wildfire that the news of the dangers of that simple act of swallowing cinnamon were brought up. Within the first three months of 2012, over 130 calls
were made to poison control centers seeking help and information regarding the misuse of cinnamon. In an article written by Melissa Healy for Los Angeles Times, Dr. Alvin C. Bronstein, medical and managing director of Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center stated that “As cinnamon coats and dries the mouth and throat, coughing, gagging, vomiting and inhaling of cinnamon ensues, leading to throat irritation, breathing difficulties and risk of pneumonia and possibly collapsed lungs.” Even with these risks, teenagers continued to “play the game” and take on the challenge. But why? All because of wanting to fit in and it’s what social media and a simple video challenged them to do. Social media is not a bad thing - not at all. It’s a great source to post what you think, connect with people, upload a video to lift others spirits, etc. But when it becomes the determining force as to what teens in the 21st century do, say, and accept individuality, the ability to truly make your own decisions is lost. Social assimilation is important for a city to run, but so are diversity and the ability for creative minds to make decisions on their own. Think about the media you follow and make sure it isn’t hindering you from making your own decisions, but rather encouraging you to be yourself and not another victim. l

Managing
Teen
Minutes
kWRITTEN BY Mia Dedear
When it’s time to sit down and study, it seems like everything is more interesting than schoolwork.
S
uddenly, you begin to be distracted by everything, whether it’s a silly animal video or a strange smudge on your laptop screen that you immediately feel the urge to clean. (Hey, procrastination makes us desperate, right?) No matter how much momentary satisfaction those detours provide, you’ll always become regretful once you realize how much time has slipped past. In order to help you avoid these mistakes, follow these tips that help you take charge of time and check things off your to-do list.
194 teen
1. Pack everything in advance.
If you’re about to head out, put everything you know you’ll need inside your backpack or purse, so when it becomes time to leave, you’re able to grab your bag and go. It’s disappointing to end up being late after spending too many minutes scrambling around to gather everything you have to bring. Avoid this predicament by planning ahead and packing your bags ahead of time.
2. Write out every task you need to accomplish, and make guesses as to how long it will take you to do these things. This way, you get an idea of how much time need to set aside. Make sure to leave this amount of time, plus a few extra minutes, in your schedule so you’ll get everything done.

3. Use post-it notes to remind you of things you need to do that day. Write down the tasks you need to accomplish, and stick them throughout your home. Then, as you encounter them, stop what you’re doing and finish that task. This will give you a visual of how many things you have left to do. If there are lots of post-it notes remaining stuck on your walls, it’s time for you to get cracking on them.
4. Shave down study time by finding a different location to hit the books. Being in a different place will likely keep your mind focused so you can finish that essay faster than you would if you were in your dorm room. If you study efficiently, you’ll find you’re able to cover more material in a smaller amount of time. Furthermore, if you finish all of your homework, you’ll have a nice block of well-earned free time.
5. Select your responsibilities carefully. Don’t agree to do something you don’t think you’ll be able to finish. It’s better to do a few things well than to only partially complete a long list of tasks. Everything you do deserves your full attention, so don’t sell yourself short. l

“I Want to Make You Smile” July / August 2016 teen
fluential 197
Teen I’m 22 years old and I grew up in Vancouver British Columbia with my younger brother, younger sister, and my parents. Growing up I was the type of person to be very hands on and never really liked school because I didn’t like being still and being indoors. However, I finished grades 1 to 12 and then finished 2 years of business school at University. Since a young age, I’ve known I wanted to start my own business so I would have the freedom to do whatever I wanted, and do it at my own pace. While I was in University, I created my YouTube Channel to make videos with the goal of making my viewers smile. I had no idea where I was going with my channel and my initial fear was no one would like what I was uploading. But, after six months people who had my similar humor were watching so it made things much easier.

What inspired you to start a YouTube channel? JT: For me, YouTube is an escape from reality and before I created my channel, I’d watch videos to take my mind off of school, work, or whatever it was that stressed me. One day, while watching videos, I realized I wanted to be that person people watched on their computer screens. I wanted to make them smile and laugh and a week later I posted my first Vid. Is your YouTube channel a creative outlet for you, or a medium to serve your viewers? JT: I view my channel as being both. I upload content of which I am proud and as I enjoy being creative, my channel is one of those avenues which allows me to show my creative side. However, at the same time, there’s a key part of me that

wants to inspire people to be positive and keep smiling. Does the pressure to constantly create content affect the quality of your finished productl? JT: More than likely every YouTuber goes through a dry creative patch where creating new content is a challenge. Yet, because I’m doing what I love, I don’t face much pressure when it comes to creating new content. I honestly love thinking of new ideas and things to share with my audience. Living a busy lifestyle at times affects the quality of my videos. Working on big projects takes a great deal of time, so I have to keep an organized scheduled that take a lot of time, do affect the amount of time so I have to make and stick to an organized schedule to keep everything moving forward. Do you intentionally create content geared toward your audience, or does your audience choose to watch you because of your content? JT: Every week is different. If there’s a video my audience wants to see, I’ll cater to their preference. For the most part, I tailor my content based on what I believe is most humorous and discuss topics which are most interesting at the time. I enjoy the freedom of being able to upload whatever I want, and because my channel is not so structured, developing new content is very easy. What are the characteristics of a good YouTuber? JT: A good YouTuber wants to understand and listen to their audience. There are

engaged with their audience and demonstrates this by consistently uploading good content. They convey a positive message and make videos because they actually like doing it, not because of trying to gain short-lived popularity. With YouTube it’s easy to get sucked into just looking at followers and subscribers which defeats the purpose of why one started making videos in the first place. Are you subject to more criticism, or held to a higher standard because of your popularity online? If so, how do you cope? JT: Yes, for sure. There’s definitely a great deal of criticism because everyone has an opinion which may not agree with mine, or they may not fully understand what it is I’m trying to portray. Early on it was difficult to read less than constructive criticism because it felt very personal and I didn’t know how to deal with the negativity. Once you start looking past the negativity and continue to do what you love, the positivity always outweighs the negative comments. There have been many discussions on how media acts as an impediment to social aptitude; yet others suggest this age of social media has allowed us to communicate more effectively than ever before. What are your opinions? JT: I agree social media has provided an avenue for more communicate and being able to communicate with people from around the globe helps the human race began to embrace more fully cultural difference. There are instances where social media is not used for good as demonstrated by documented cases

“The most important factor I strive to include in my videos is the desire and ability to relate to the various issues my viewers may be experiencing personally.”
What factors are the most important in conveying a message or connecting to your viewers? JT: The most important factor I strive to include in my videos is the desire and ability to relate to the various issues my viewers may be experiencing personally. I strive to put myself in their shoes and to try to empathize with what they’re going through. This makes it easier to talk about subjects which are usually very personal.
of bullying and a means for terrorists to spread their propaganda. Overall, social media is a very positive platform and a way for people to connect and be educated.
What message do you hope your viewers take away from watching your videos? JT: On all of my social media platforms I stress the importance of being positive and never forgetting to smile. There will always be challenging circumstances we’ll have to face from time to time; however, as long as look for the positive in every situation and understand things will eventually get better, we’ll be much happier and less stressed. I hope my viewers not only watch my videos to be entertained, but to feel a sense of happiness and positivity. That’s my ultimate goal.
How has your Youtube channel come to influence teenagers? JT: I hope my YouTube channel has influenced teenagers because of the relatable topics I choose to address. Because I deal with real life issues of which I’ve personally faced, I’m able to relate with my audience on a real and personal level. Making my audience laugh is important and I hope they know there’s positivity in
What is the most important aspect when making a new video? JT: The most important aspect is to consider what message I intend to get across and how it will affect my fans. What I post for my fans must also inspire me and represents something in which I truly believe. After you watch my videos, you have a deeper understanding into the person named Josh Tryhane. l

3. Add butter with your fingers. At the end of combing the two, the flour should look a slightly clumpy with small bits of butter pieces. This will create the flakiness of a good scone. 4.
