It’s time for outdoor summer soirees that begin by the pool and end at a bonfire. I love the thought of no-fuss, barefoot nights, but there’s still a bit of planning required when it comes to outdoor parties. Here are my favorite summer outdoor entertaining tips:

Warmer weather means smaller clothes and even smaller appetites. Serve your guests bite-sized appetizers, so they can have a little or a lot, whichever they prefer. HAVE A PLAN
A smart host is one with a plan and a backup plan. If the skies open up for a summer storm or your strategic attempts to ward off swarms of mosquitos are futile, have an outdoor tent ready or a space indoors that can accommodate your guests. If neither of these things are possible, you may want to consider a rain date.

DURING SUMMER, IT’S THE WINE WRITTEN BY D A R R E N M. S C O T T
D
rinking wine during the summer is different. It's not because the food is different or the temperature is warmer. It’s different because it’s the thing to do. Summertime is meant for vacations, graduations and poolside parties. It means dressing down and
slowing down. Fortunately, the level of anxiety dips, and we’re a little less formal. Our palates still want to experience greatness, to be enticed and inspired by wines that greet us with mystery complemented with delightfulness and refreshment.
laV Restaurant
InFluential Magazine asked me to recommend four selections
& Wine Bar
which complement nicely the energy of summer. My selections will definitely provide certain mystery and will excite the palate; while at the same time will be gentle to the wallet.
CREMANT DE LIMOUX BRUT “CUVÉE ROSÉ” DOMAINE COLLIN NV (LANGUEDOC) HISTORY:
After honing his craft at his family’s business in Champagne (oenophiles
will recognize the name Ulysse Collin as one of the top récoltant-manipulants in the region), Phillipe Collin decided to strike out on his own in the early eighties.
Seeking his
fortunes elsewhere in France, he settled in the vicinity of Limoux in northwest Languedoc a couple of hours inland from the Mediterranean Sea.
The cooler climate of the area
is suited to the traditional varietals of Champagne, and Collin makes this cuvee from a majority of Chardonnay with a bit of Chenin Blanc with some Pinot Noir for color. TECHNICAL
NOTES:
The wine is made in the traditional method of Champagne,
with secondary fermentation occurring in the bottle and all riddling performed by hand. TASTING NOTES:
The result is a complex and aromatic sparkling wine with notes of wild
strawberry and a crisp, refreshing finish. This wine makes a wonderful aperitif on its own – perfect for sharing with friends on a hot summer day. 14

Lately, we’ve witnessed a resurgence of the accessorized man, mirroring the gentleman of years past, enabling the boutonnière to branchout from formal events to now occupy space in the dapper, modern man’s repertoire. The boutonnière is intended to be worn through the suit buttonhole of the left lapel, bud exposed with the stem tucked

Originally thought to ward off evil spirits and foul odors from unkempt grooms, the boutonnière and other lapel decorations such as the Ivy League pin, grew to represent status and exclusivity, sealing its place in the fashion realm.

Rather than another list of seasonal standards, I’m going to share some out-of-the-way wines and regions in a hope to provide inspiration to create, congregate or even migrate during this summer season. The highly-regarded, yet little-known cuisine of Basque country in Northern Spain is most famously paired with Txakoli (pronounced CHAH-ko-lee), the lean and racy wine of the region. Most are white and lightly effervescentalthough the rosés are a special treat- and make a perfect pair for most things salty like olives, anchovies, or charcuterie. Naturally low in alcohol, they make a brilliant warm weather refresher. Although limited, a good wine shop will generally have at least one.
