Who She Is: Robin studied the history of jewelry at Sotheby’s in London under some of the world’s leading authorities. From London, she moved to New York, where she enrolled in the Gemology Institute of America (GIA) and launched her career at Tiffany’s, Sotheby’s and an independently owned estate gallery. Her Fascination with Jewelry: Robin’s appreciation of jewelry evolved from a fascination with people historically adorning themselves. This, coupled with an implicit interest for rocks, gemstones, crystal structures and chemical composition, compelled Robin to become an expert in the industry. Robin loves the historical context of jewelry and finding ways to make it applicable in our socially connected world. Impact of Studying in London and New York:

Studying

in London and New York fostered Robin’s appreciation for fashion and transformed how she identified with her passions. Robin was introduced to different people whom she never would have encountered otherwise, and each offered remarkable expertise in various eras and craftsmanship. Why She Values Listening to Her Customers: Robin provides uncommon personal service; learning about each individual and working with their interests at heart in order to correctly guide them through any purchase that they make. Robin always makes sure her clients come first and that there is a real and intentional relationship with the jewelry they select, even if they don’t realize it. How She Plans on Evolving the Jewelry Industry in 2015: Robin is not afraid to take steps to improve herself or the jewelry industry. She will go beyond her own comfort zone with clients and dealers in order to grow and explore new directions every day. Robin meets with her clients one-on-one, by appointment only, to ensure they receive her undivided attention as they search for the perfect piece of jewelry. 16

JENNIFER RANSOM RICE E X E C U T I V E D I R E C TO R | T E X A S C U LT U R A L T R U S T FINE ART | AUSTIN, TX Who She Is: Jennifer Ransom Rice was born in Austin and raised in East Texas. She spent 15 years at the capitol working under strong women leaders including chief of staff for Senator Florence Shapiro. As Executive Director of the Texas Cultural Trust, Jennifer is now a strong woman leader at the helm of a statewide organization that promotes arts education and the arts as an economic driver. Importance of Making a Difference: "Never doubt that a small group of dedicated people can make difference - it's the only thing that ever has," is a favorite quote by Margaret Mead and a guiding principle for Jennifer. With a professional background in politics and a personal commitment to civic life, Jennifer believes strongly in finding a cause you can champion. Why She is Committed to the Arts: Jennifer is committed to the arts because they are vital to our state’s economy and our children’s education. Her commitment shines in her both her professional and personal life. Whether it is speaking to the legislature on behalf of arts funding or giving of her time to numerous arts nonprofits in Austin, Jennifer believes strongly in the important impact of the arts. How She Successfully Balances a Busy Life:

Jennifer takes

her son to school every day, so she is the last person he sees before he starts his day. Maintaining the work/life balance is challenging, but she understands you do not need “Disneyland experiences” to spend quality time together when a walk on the hike and bike trail or splashing in mud puddles is just as meaningful. Arts’ Impact in the Future: Increased funding for the arts on a state level, equal access to arts education for all students – these are just a couple of ways Jennifer defines success. The arts generate $5.1 billion for our state’s economy now and prepare our students to be key contributors to our economy in the future. With a growing creative economy, the arts play an increasingly impactful role in the future. IN FLUENTIAL 17

NEW AGAIN WRITTEN BY C H A D B U T T E R F I E L D

I

have been a music enthusiast since I was a preteen when my dad brought home a new stereo to help him integrate himself into the new “disco” era. The sound was amazing – not just for disco but for all music. I would always bring in my records to listen to them on his system because all I had was a rinky-dink record player with cheap headphones. There was something therapeutic about just sitting on the couch with the lights dimmed just listening to the music.

As the years went by I, like most of us, had accepted the compromise of inferior quality for convenience and crammed 3,000 substandard quality songs on my Ipod with a pair of $4 ear-buds. Every now and then I pined for the days when I could sit on the couch and crank up a really GOOD system and get back to listening. But life kept getting in the way. A few years ago I had the opportunity to purchase some gently used high-quality vintage audio equipment to begin building my system. It was the stuff of

SOCAR C H AT M O N -T H O M A S PRESIDENT |

BALLET AUSTIN GUILD AUSTIN, TX

Who She Is: Socar Chatmon-Thomas is a wife, a mother, an entrepreneur, a small business owner, a Realtor and an avid volunteer. At an early age, her parents taught her the importance of giving back to her community through volunteerism. Socar has accepted executive positions on various boards and non-profits as her way of giving back to the community and also to model volunteerism for her daughters. Importance of Making a Difference: If not now, when? Socar has CHOSEN to “say yes” when asked to volunteer because it’s imperative we make progress toward diversifying classical dance. One day, the next Alvin Ailey or Misty Copeland might begin their memoirs with, “Without receiving a dance scholarship from Ballet Austin, I would have never begun dancing.” This is why she volunteers. She is Committed:

Socar’s father once said, “Never ask

anyone to do something you are not willing to do yourself.” She defines commitment as getting things done. She has grand ideas and is not afraid of getting her hands dirty. She is committed to the cause, not just the position. Why Ballet Austin Guild: One Sunday afternoon her family went to see Ballet Austin’s “Romeo and Juliet” and while watching the ballet her youngest daughter Bella kept asking questions and she kept “shushing” her. At intermission, Gayle Hamilton introduced herself and told Socar in the Guild they encourage the students to ask questions. She then invited her to join the guild. She did and the rest is history. How the Arts Add Enrichment: It has been proven the arts help children improve math and science test scores. Higher scores are achieved when children engage in dance, play an instrument or participate in the arts in anyway. Knowing that makes Socar feel great! By helping at least one boy or one girl we are creating a much more beautiful and artistic future. Life without art is barely worth living, even the cavemen agreed. 30

CAROLINE BOUDREAUX F O U N D E R | T H E M I R A C L E F O U N D AT I O N AUSTIN, TX Who She Is: Caroline describes herself as a “quintessential Cajun girl” who radiates an attentive calm, but at the same time, seems coiled for action. She is a fundraising dynamo who inspires others, adores the children she serves and is a powerful voice for orphans-the most vulnerable population in the world. How The Miracle Foundation Came To Be: In 2000, Caroline left her successful career as a television advertising sales executive to travel the world. After seeing the harsh reality faced by orphans in the developing world – many of whom were suffering greatly from hunger, disease and a lack of love – she became determined to change the destinies of these children. With no experience in management or fundraising, Caroline invested her life’s savings and founded The Miracle Foundation on the idea that all orphans deserve clean water, nutritious food, high-quality healthcare, an excellent education, and a secure, loving home, in order to reach their full potential and become self-sustaining citizens. Gaining Recognition: In 2009, The World Economic Forum recognized Caroline as a Young Global Leader and gave her a five-year scholarship to ensure she can lead the organization to help millions. Caroline would love to be selected as one of the “CNN Heroes,” as that honor would enable her to reach a global audience and tell the story of the orphan children that she serves. Miracles Waiting to Happen:

The Miracle Foundation

Wherever there is need,

Caroline and her Miracle team will continue to partner with governmnents and struggling orphanages to provide food, healthcare, education, love, and even college for orphaned children. IN FLUENTIAL 31

When you attend the company awards nights, your sister’s formal wedding, or charity event that calls for Black Tie, it’s important to abide by the rules to look your best. You don’t want your peers to get the impression you’re as clueless as a teenager. A classic black tuxedo is still the standard at these events.

DECORATIVE HAIRPIECES Spring is all about hair accessories. We have seen models on fashion runways wear floral headbands and crowns, as well as, vintage hair clips and headbands. Whether your hair is straight, curly, short, or long, simply add a Bohemian headpiece or stack on metallic bobby pins to finish your look.

BLOWOUTS “A classic in my book, says Theresa Przybyla, Senior Stylist, Jose Luis Salon. This trendy style has been seen on red carpets, runways, and in magazines.

INSTRUCTIONS: 1) Prep wet hair using a paddle brush and Oribe Gel Serum for a more defined blow dry.

2) Once hair is dry, use Oribe Smooth Style Serum to emulsify in your hands and apply through the hair.

3) Establish your far side part using a comb. You can use the high point of your eyebrow arch as your starting point.

4) Once you have your part in place, smooth down the hair with a comb and Oribe Superfine Hairspray to create a super polished look.

5) You can wear this look straight, with stacked Bobby pins or you can add some Boho waves with a side French braid — this look is very versatile.

BOBS “Blunt, mid-length bobs are definitely trendy this year, says Callie Meuer, Stylist, Jose Luis Salon. This cut not only looks great, but it is so easy to style. The spring season is all about the textured/tousled bobs, a messy, but chic look. Create Bohemian waves using our how-to tutorial on your short choppy bob and you will be good to go.

LONG & LOW PONYTAILS This style looks great if you have a considerable amount of hair. Want a bolder look? Try a sleek ponytail with a middle part.

RED HAIR Copper and rose gold are of tonal value to redheads this season. These colors are both bold and visually stunning. This beautiful color would also pair great with any of the cuts, styles and accessories mentioned earlier.

BREAKING MYTHS with

P R I N T S & PAT T E R N S WRITTEN BY S H E E R I N J A F R I

R

ules that limit you to wearing particular prints should be ditched by now. So what if you’re not the kind of girl with barely there waist and legs; it actually is a good thing you have more to show and love. Gone are the days when fashion was only about size-zero women, there is now more to the story. It would not be wrong, if we say, fashion now comes in all colors, shapes and sizes. This spring, we are thinking of breaking some plus-size print

rules, like not wearing horizontal stripes or bold prints. If you love them, you should wear them; this should be your dressing-up mantra for the coming season. Don’t confine yourself to certain cuts, styles, colors and outfits, experiment more so you can discover something new that suits you even more. Have a look at these rule-breaking prints and see how you can style them without looking over or under dressed. Not Just Vertical Everyone loves stripes and everyone should get an equal share of them. Why is it, that we are told that a certain size can wear vertical and horizontal stripes, or far-apart, not-too-close stripes? There’s a certain way to wear stripes in any form and if you do it right, there’s no way you can look bad. To wear horizontal stripes, find outfits which fit perfectly. Look for horizontal stripes which don’t just move to one direction, keep the print moving, zigzag or any other way you like. Another quick tip, wear them in your bottoms and keep the top plain or just layer the vertical striped top with a plain tailored coat or anything PHOTO SOURCE: WWW.THEPEARSHAPE.COM

You’ve got the Edge Techniques from the experts to make your cookouts sizzle

A

s the summer approaches, it will be time to clean up the grill and grab your tongs. It will be the time of year where backyards across America will be filled with the aroma of smoke, the sizzle of cooking meat, and the laughter of families and friends.

To make sure you’re prepared for the outdoor-grilling season, we’ve collected a few tried and tested grilling techniques and inventive recipes from popular Austin chefs and pitmasters to give you an edge over the other “grillmasters” in your neighborhood. Succulent beer-brined smoked chicken, braised beef short ribs kissed by the grill and served with zucchini and green bean coleslaw. It’s enough to make your mouth water. Grill with a technique that works for you and thrills your taste buds. That’s really what it’s all about. But, we’re glad to point you in a good direction, one that will surely make you the envy of the neighborhood. everything from poultry, pork, game and livestock. • Mesquite wood = strong, heavy smoke.
