It is the integration of the body, mind, and spirit; and the appreciation that everything I do, think, feel, and believe has an impact on my state of health. Of course the definition of wellness is varied so an expert viewpoint is apropos. The National Wellness Institute--along with the help of leaders in health and wellness--shared many interpretations and models of wellness.

fter spending most of the last year apart due to work obligations, enchanting and historic Santa Fe provided my husband and me with the perfect opportunity to relax and reconnect. We both returned to Austin refocused on each other and singing the praises of this desert oasis set against the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.
influential-magazine.com
We stayed in the fabulous second home of Austinites John Hogg and David Garza. Situated in a gated community overlooking a vast vista, this beautiful adobe style home features hand trowel plaster walls, reclaimed wood beams, and a chef's kitchen. The home is full of art, books, textiles, and a vast collection of

Southwestern artifacts.
Santa Fe, the nation’s oldest state capitol, is laid out around a traditional Spanish plaza surrounded by the Palace of Governors, the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, boutiques, and museums. Within walking distance of the plaza you’ll find Canyon Road featuring over a hundred art galleries and studios exhibiting Native American art and antiquities.
Santa Fe’s culinary scene consistently ranks near the top of every foodie’s list with several James Beard Foundation Award nominees calling the area home. You will find cuisine ranging

from ethnic Native American and Mexican styles to new world cuisine. With an amazing kitchen to utilize, cooking was a must for us, so we skipped the national grocery chains and visited the Saturday morning Farmers’ Market featuring organic mountain grown vegetables, flowers, and fruits.
After exploring, eating, and shopping, take a trip 70 miles north of Santa Fe. You will find the perfect spot to unwind at a nearly 150 year old resort called Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa. There you’ll find the only hot springs in the world with four healing minerals in the waters of its 11 pools. John Hogg also recommends visiting Jemez Springs where with a little effort - hiking and biking required – you will discover the nearly private oasis with a hillside spring water cascading down the mountainside. In his words, “Totally natural, totally beautiful.”
When asked why Santa Fe was selected as the location for a second home, “Aside from providing me a chance to collect and decorate in a different genre, displaying many family Texas items in the western and adobe setting, we go simply to relax! We are always enlivened when we go to Santa Fe. It is our complete recharge zone.
It gives us time to focus on each other and
ourselves, as well as the pups (three Viszlas). We leave stronger and invigorated, ready to face our daily world in Austin!” said John.
While having so much to do in and around Santa Fe is a huge draw, one wouldn’t be disappointed with their visit if they never stepped foot outside, preferring instead to curl up on the leather sofa in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine.
S A N TA F E BY T H E N U M B E R S • Rated #1 in a Travel & Leisure poll for culture, peace, and quiet. • Health.com ranked Santa Fe the #2 city in the country for air quality. • 320 days of sunshine per year. • Santa Fe is 50% higher above sea level than Denver makes it the highest state capitol in the US. • Named by Singletracks.com one of the top 10 cities for mountain biking with 30 miles of hiking trails.

pregnancy. Whether it is a first or fifth, a surprise or long hoped for, it is joyful news. The choice about who to tell and when will vary from family to family. Though some couples share the news as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed, it's smart to wait until the first trimester is well in hand. Most people tell immediate family first, followed by close friends. If you're one of the first to know, this conversation may be accompanied by a request to hold the information close until the couple has the chance to tell others personally. Some will make an announcement at a family event to make sure their closest loved ones hear about it directly from them. Facebook has added an extra twist: Until the couple is ready for anyone to know about a pregnancy, they might restrict their Facebook wall to prevent an over-eager well-wisher from spilling the beans. Even if a Facebook wall is active, be sure the news is truly public knowledge before posting congratulations. If you deduce someone is expecting, either from an extra glow or a declined glass of wine, show respect by allowing her to tell you in her own time. When she breaks the news, it's okay to share the insight you had then

for these changes can help you know what is normal, what is not, and how to best care for yourself during this exciting time. Perhaps more than any other organ, the skin can change substantially during pregnancy - the following list will help you manage these changes:

are especially common on the abdomen and with large babies or twins. Parallel purple, pink, or skin-colored lines of scars on the abdomen or thighs are most common, although they can occur on the breasts or upper arms. Not all stretch marks can be prevented, but moisturizing the skin several times a day and drinking plenty of water can keep it soft and help it stretch with the baby. Once nursing is complete, there are potential treatments which can soften the appearance of stretch marks, including tretinoin cream and lasers to remove the redness. • Acne - Acne is a hormonal disease which often affects teenagers but the wild hormonal ride of pregnancy can cause it to improve or flare up. Many inflammatory conditions (including acne) improve during pregnancy as the body downregulates the immune system so as not to attack the baby. Unfortunately, sometimes hormonal changes overwhelm the skin and acne can appear or worsen. Always avoid picking or squeezing lesions and see your dermatologist if your acne flares. Many traditional treatments for acne (like oral antibiotics, tretinoin cream, and isotretinoin) are not safe to use during pregnancy but there are a few good options to get you through.
• Benign Skin Growths - Many types of benign skin growths, including moles, skin tags, and cherry angioma (blood moles) become larger and more numerous during the topsy-turvy hormonal changes of pregnancy. Although these generally cannot be prevented, they can be treated or removed once the baby is born if bothersome or unsightly. Always see your dermatologist during or after pregnancy for any spot that is growing, bleeding, changing color, or otherwise concerning to you since skin cancer can develop during pregnancy. • Hair Changes - The hair on your head often gets thicker and grows more quickly during pregnancy. Unfortunately, after the baby is born this extra growth will often quickly fall out, giving the impression that you are losing your hair! This quick and heavy hair loss after a stressful event (such as surgery or having a baby) is called telogen effluvium. Although it can be frightening, it is temporary, generally lasting about three months and typically resolves without treatment. Many women also wonder about coloring or treating their hair during pregnancy. There are no useful studies in humans, but studies reported by OTIS (Organization of Teratology Information Specialists) in animals showed no increased risk even at one hundred times the usual exposure to hair coloring

Changing diapers frequently with a thick diaper cream such as A&D Ointment or Desitin can help keep irritants off of the skin. Some “diaper-free” time with exposure to the open air also helps. If the above tips don’t work, remind the child of their habit by bandaging the thumb or putting a sock on the hand at night. Your dentist or pediatrician may prescribe a bitter medication to coat the thumb or the use of a mouth appliance.

different meanings depending on who you are speaking with. The definitions can range from mass production farming to a DIY tomato plant hanging in the kitchen window. When talking with Bethany AndrĂŠe, owner of Snack Bar, an eclectic restaurant located in Austin's iconic SoCo, it becomes evident that to her farm-to-table is not just a trend but the basis on which her restaurant operates.

rich with nutrients. Local food may also have a lessened risk of contamination during shipping and handling. Not to mention, local produce may have a noticeable abundance of flavor compared to produce that has been sitting out or transported long distances. Often times, farm-to-table can have a lower carbon footprint since less transportation equals fewer emissions, sustainable practices yield less chemical use and investing in urban farms provides more green space.
Along with a multitude of health and environmental benefits, Snack Bar's farm-to-table mindset is one that invests in the community by providing support for small businesses, producers, ranchers, farmers and their families. For them, farm-to-table also keeps money local, making a community both stable and in many ways self-reliant. According to a study done by the New Economics Foundation, buying from a local farmer's market keeps twice as much money in the community than buying from a supermarket. In many ways farmto-table can help sustain healthy eating, a healthy environment, and a healthy local economy.
However, what farm-to-table means at one restaurant may be contrastingly different at another. Today's many vague terms and product labels can lead to a lot of consumer confusion and frustration. Since consumers want to ensure that their food is safe, it is important that they seek information. If you want to know what is really being served on your plate it is best to ask each restaurant what farm-to-table means to them.
"Today, most Americans are five generations removed from the farm. When seeking information about their food they are left to roam

he Autism Trust was founded by Polly Tommey in England in 2007. Realizing provisions and educational opportunities for her son Billy were bleak at best, she chose to take matters into her own hands. Rather than establishing a special needs trust or developing an adult care plan for her son, Polly and her husband Jonathan dreamed bigger. There are countless other “Billys out there who need the same care and support as they enter adulthood. Autism now affects 1 in 68 children. Why should they stop at their own front door?
Their dream was to build a place that would focus on the talents and abilities of each individual with autism, teach them life skills, and help them become a part of society rather than isolating them from it.

Many individuals with autism require special dietary accommodations and avoidance of chemicals due to inadequate detoxification. Great success has been found in many children and adults with autism through gluten and casein free diets, nutrient supplementation, and detoxification support. Jonathan Tommey is also managing director of The Autism Clinic where he oversees the health and nutritional management of over 880 individuals with autism. Mr. Tommey brings his experience and knowledge to The Autism Trust where he will provide health and nutritional support to those who choose to live and/or work there. Exercise, nature, and outdoor activities are also essential in the whole-health concept of The Autism Trust. Nature trails, gardening, horticulture, and horse riding are a handful of outdoor activities that will be available to stimulate mind and body in a natural setting.
Although the vocational programs are focused towards teens and adults, children are gladly welcome in The Autism Trust. Parents with newly diagnosed children often struggle to find appropriate resources and services for their child.

hen considering the nature of working on the internet these days, more time on the computer, exposure to lit screens and portable devices has necessitated some consideration be given to the concerns of today’s working man and woman. There are a host of vision and eye issues related to constant computer and portable device use. The most obvious are eyestrain and fatigue. Air conditioning in the workplace is a predominant factor for dry eyes which is a major problem with contact lens use. Most of these issues can be addressed in the course of the eye exam where proper lenses and solutions or
medications can alleviate most problems. Regular eye exams are important to monitor any early changes in vision and health problems of the eyes. Symptom-free diseases like glaucoma and retinal disease are only detected early with a thorough eye exam with dilation of the pupils before serious vision changes occur. Contact lens problems are easily prevented and should be evaluated regularly for proper alignment and lens care. Mild eye allergies can be resolved with the correct contact lens and disinfectant solution combinations. Prescription eye drops can resolve more serious cases of allergies and red eyes with proper attention from an eyecare professional no matter if one has contacts or glasses. Children’s vision can be affected with extreme and constant use of portable devices, such as: smart phones, iPad tablets, and video games. There is a possibility that with extended accommodation these devices, along with heavy near work and computer use, myopia or nearsightedness can progress. This progression will necessitate the increased need for prescription glasses or contact lenses. There are

Clippers and shears should be sprayed and
sanitized frequently during the service. Combs and brushes should also be freshly cleaned before your service. Does the barber ask the right questions? When you sit down in the barber chair and the barber puts the cape around your neck, the consultation should include questions like “What type of haircut would you like?”, “Do you desire a shave?”, and “Are there any sensitive or problem areas of your skin or scalp of which I need to be aware?” To get an idea of the barber’s experience, simply ask.
