OUR PUBLISHER’S NOTE

An anniversary is a time of reflection; to look back at past successes and failures and to look forward to the future, putting wisdom gained through experience to use.

I

t’s a time to examine what has worked and what has not, develop strengths and improve weaknesses, and strategize and plan accordingly. These steps are valuable, since as a small business owner, it’s easy to get caught up in the details of daily operations and lose sight of long-term goals. With every September / October edition we observe another anniversary of our multi award-winning magazine. This year, 2020, marks our fifth year of telling awesome stories of how folks around the world are “Dedicated to the Art of Living Well”. Our Premiere Issue, published in September 2015, was less pages than recent editions. Somehow, with few contacts and no reputation on which to stand, we were able to have a successful launch. Our eager and excited team had no direct experience in design, production, or journalism; but we had a plan, great determination, and the business sense to partner with individuals who possessed the skills lacking. Through the years, our business has grown and evolved from its modest beginnings. We’ve embraced the inevitability of change and steered our way through unforeseen challenges. As always, with each September / October edition, we express our large heartfelt appreciation for those of you who’ve continued to support us through five amazing years. We beg you to continue to act prudently, with kindness, and empathy. We look forward eagerly to the time when we’re able to socialize with you in person. Peace & Blessings,

3 WAYS VIRTUAL

10 TEEN

FEATURE

S TO BOOST EYE HEALTH AMID LEARNING

Whether students are attending class in person, virtually or a hybrid version of both, there’s one thing everyone has in common: a lot more education will be happening digitally. Screens are a valuable tool in education, but they also can have health implications, including stress on the eyes.

S

tudents of all ages are spending more time on computers, tablets, and phone screens in general, but COVID-19 has accelerated this use. In recent months, screen time for kids has increased by 500% as virtual learning was introduced and parents continue to work from home. This is having a direct impact on eye health. Fortunately, there are simple ways families can support eye health and position students for success no matter what school shapes up to be this year:

Take Breaks and Set Limits Have a family meeting to get everyone on board for following the 20/20/20 rule. For every 20 minutes you are using a screen you need to take at least 20 seconds to look away at something

SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2020 TEEN

FLUENTIAL

11

Teen that is at least 20 feet away. This allows the eyes to rest and refocus, helping to prevent strain. If everyone is working at the same time in the house, you could ring a bell or play a song at these intervals as an eye rest reminder.

Lutein is a powerful antioxidant that plays a key role in shielding eyes from damaging light. Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner shares nutritious foods that can help boost eye health amid virtual learning:

In addition to these mini breaks, it’s important to take larger breaks to relieve eyes more thoroughly. This is especially important for children’s eyes that are still growing. For every hour working or playing on a screen, take a 5- to 10-minute break to leave the area and let the eyes rest. Perhaps take a walk or grab a snack before returning to studies.

Green leafy vegetables like kale or spinach are high in lutein content, as are Eggland’s Best eggs, which contain 38% more lutein compared to ordinary eggs. Lutein found in eggs is also more easily absorbed by the body than leafy greens. Just remember to eat the whole egg since lutein is found in the egg yolk.

Wear Blue Light Blocking Glasses The blue light emitted from digital screens can be particularly harsh on eyes, plus it can have a negative impact on sleep patterns. The brain registers blue light as daytime, so it’s especially important to be aware of screen time before bed. Shut off screens at least an hour before bedtime to ensure kids fall to sleep efficiently and get deep, restorative rest. Beyond limiting evening screen time, you can help filter harsh lights with blue light blocking glasses. These are sometimes called computer glasses because they have no prescription but look like normal glasses. Strive to have students always wear these glasses while using a device. If that’s not possible, research blue light blocking software and apps.

Eat For Eye Health What you eat can help support eye health by providing the body essential nutrients to support vision like lutein.

12

TEEN

In addition to lutein, Eggland’s Best eggs contain a variety of important micronutrients that support immune health. With six times more vitamin D, 10 times more vitamin E, and more than double the omega-3s and vitamin B12 compared to ordinary eggs, Eggland’s Best eggs are a perfect ingredient to optimize immune health and incorporate into your family’s diet as you prepare for back to school. Try new recipes that contain these ingredients and others that help support vision wellness. With both a leafy vegetable and nutrient-rich Eggland’s Best eggs, this is a delicious option you can try at home:

1/4 small onion, shredded 1 cup fresh spinach leaves, washed & diced 4 slices turkey bacon, cooked & crumbled 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 refrigerated pie crusts Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F; spray a 12-cup muffin tin with non-stick cooking spray and set aside. In a medium-size bowl, whisk eggs together with milk, half & half, salt & pepper; set aside. In a small skillet over medium heat, cook turkey bacon slices until crispy; drain, cool, and dice or crumble into small pieces and set aside. Wash spinach well and pat dry; chop into small pieces and set aside. Using a handheld grater, grate onion and brie cheese. Add spinach, bacon, onion and brie to egg mixture and blend well. Roll out refrigerated pie crust and cut in 3 inch circles; line muffin tins with pie crust. Spoon egg mixture into each muffin cup, filling 3/4 full; place in oven and cook for 25 minutes or until eggs are set.

Spinach, Brie, and Bacon Mini Quiche

Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Ingredients 5 Eggland’s Best eggs 1/4 cup fat-free half & half 1/4 cup skim milk 1/2 cup brie cheese, shredded

Note: You may have extra egg mixture depending on how high the muffin tins are filled. Repeat steps above to create more quiches to finish off egg mixture. (BPT) l

BEAUTY Let’s face it, makeup can be expensive. We are living in a time like no other, with the pandemic and social distancing affecting every aspect of our lives - from our daily lifestyles, budgets, diets - to our beauty regimens.

W

e are all guilty of wanting the most luxe and notable cosmetics to put on our faces. But in this economy, splurging on makeup isn’t a practical option. Yet these affordable luxuries can be an excellent way to practice selfcare when we need a little extra positivity in our lives. In fact, studies show in challenging times women tend to treat themselves to personal care items as a way to feel better. As we look ahead to what the summer season has in store for us, there’s no question that it’s going to look different than years past - but “different” doesn’t mean you can’t buy the makeup that you love. We connected with dermatologist Michelle Henry to talk about affordable and accessible ways to fuel up your beauty look in this new normal.

Seek Premium Products That Offer Multiple Benefits “We are living in the age of low-effort beauty, now more than ever. Layering on multiple makeup products at once is not a great idea in the summer, especially if you’re going to wear a mask. It can result in breakouts and clogged pores,” says dermatologist Dr. Henry. “It’s important to look for multi-benefit beauty products that help keep skin healthy and simplify your regimen; products with sunscreen and additional vitamins and antioxidants are great options.”

One high-quality drugstore foundation that offers multiple benefits for skin is Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 20. It offers a triple punch of natural-looking, silky coverage, effective sun protection and an exclusive blend of antioxidants to help your skin counter stress and improve luminosity, tone, and texture over time. It’s makeup backed by the science of skincare - that keeps your skin healthy - at an affordable price. For example, here are some ways you might pamper yourself with drugstore products - without overwhelming your budget.

Look for Makeup Dupes for Value Save money by finding specially formulated products that help you look good and feel better. Look for makeup dupes for value; dupes are a great way to feel out colors and formulas without having to let go of hard-earned dollars, while still getting effective, high-end products and benefits. Turns out most luxury brand makeup has the same ingredients in it and provides the same multi-benefits as the drugstore ones.

Use Quality Makeup Brushes Often, a perfect makeup job is more dependent on the usefulness of the tools than the amount spent on the

products. Invest in well-made brushes, sponges and applicators that can be washed and used over and over. When you buy good quality tools, they help you achieve a more natural-looking makeup application and can even help you use less makeup. But remember, failure to keep your tools clean leads to broken bristles that will show up on your skin. Cleaning makeup brushes has always been important, but during the pandemic, worries about avoiding exposure to germs and preventing cross-contamination are at an all-time high, so always clean your brushes.

Take Advantage of Frequent-Shopper Discounts Once you find the drug chains that carry your favorite makeup brands, sign up for their rewards cards so you can accrue points toward future purchases and learn about special promotions. You can often rack up points picking up groceries, pharmaceuticals, and other items on offer, then use the discounts on your choice of cosmetics. As the economy slowly recovers from the effects of COVID-19, savvy consumers continue to seek ways to care for their own well-being while also watching their money. Neutrogena’s portfolio of makeup fueled by skincare can make you feel pampered, help you look radiant and empower you to present your best possible self, no matter the challenges you’re facing from day to day. Try Neutrogena today, available nationwide at any mass drugstore. (BPT) l

For young people preparing to enter the workforce, knowing how to secure a job is challenging enough - but now there are even more obstacles to overcome due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

P

eople around the country are experiencing greater difficulty adapting to everchanging work environments and ongoing economic shifts. Pew Research Center recently shared that 90 percent of jobs lost during COVID-19 were positions that could not telework. Fortunately for young people now entering the job market or making career moves, programs are available to help them succeed in any future career or workplace. Boys & Girls Clubs of America, in partnership with Toyota and The Coca-Cola Company, provides youth nationwide with workforce readiness programs, which includes access to real-life job experiences and resources needed to build valuable skills and become career-ready.

1. Develop Skills

for Remote Work

With so many uncertainties in the world right now, it is critical you focus and refine skills that help position you as a strong candidate in the applicant

pool. Establishing strong verbal and nonverbal communication skills ensures easier transitions to a remote workforce, which many people are adapting to. Practice public speaking and writing with your friends and family, and ask

influential-magazine.com

FEATURE them to make constructive critiques. With each time, you will learn how to better articulate your thoughts and present yourself with confidence and poise. Practicing proper body language, like eye contact and good posture, is also beneficial to best communicate with hiring managers during interviews as well as coworkers once you land the job. Furthermore, identifying your areas of improvement is also very valuable to work on when preparing for a job. Is time management a struggle in fast-paced environments? Do you sometimes find it difficult to adapt to unexpected changes? If the answer is yes to either question, Purdue University suggests managing these situations better by identifying time wasters, setting goals and establishing routines.

2.

Create Your Own Virtual Career Fair Entering the workforce can be scary, but spending time researching and investing in resources to help you learn about different career paths can diminish that fear and make the job search fun. Creating your virtual career fair will help you identify various job opportunities, become familiar with the skills employers seek out in specific career settings and widen your horizons on the jobs available to you. You might be asking yourself, “how do I create my own virtual career fair?” First, consider utilizing free, online resources like youth.gov and mynextmove.org that provide you with skill and interest assessments and point you to jobs that match your results. From there, you’ll be able to view job applications and intern-

ship opportunities with an idea of what you like and what interests you. Alternatively, virtual field trips or virtual career exploration tools are becoming more prevalent and popular among today’s youth. For example, for teens who might be interested in manufacturing or engineering, Toyota North America offers a virtual behind-the-scenes look at their manufacturing plants through their Teen Drive 365 video series.

3.

Prepare for Virtual Interviews Before any interview, preparation is imperative so you’re able to put your best foot forward. First, you must create a resume that clearly and concisely highlights why you’re the perfect match for the job. Your resume is a recruiter’s first impression of you. To ensure you “wow” any recruiter, research free online resume writing tutorials or download resume templates to spruce things up. Also, ask for a second pair of eyes on your resume to check for any spelling or punctuation errors as well as to provide overall feedback. Additionally, host mock video interviews with a parent or peer to make you feel fully prepared for the actual interview. Recruiters across the country are hiring young people virtually now, so becoming comfortable speaking through a computer will improve your confidence and show the recruiter you mean business. Boys & Girls Club of America’s Workforce Readiness programs arm youth with a special set of skills and resources to shape their futures, feel confident exploring new opportunities and envision endless possibilities. ESSENTIALS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

EDUCATION • Caffeine fix: Late to bed, early to rise -- most college students rely on coffee to fuel this grueling schedule. Seek out an easy to use, low-maintenance coffee maker that doesn’t require a ton of space. When paired with an insulated to-go cup, quick caffeine fixes can help students not only when they’re burning the midnight oil or getting out of bed, but also when they’re heading out the door. • Musical tools: Studies suggest that learning to play music has the power to foster the personal growth needed for achieving self-

fulfillment later in adulthood, making a Casio keyboard one great addition to any students’ dorm room or bedroom. Portable and compact, they offer a range of features for musicians to learn, practice, record and perform.

• Lighten the load: With so many electronic versions of textbooks available these days, an e-reader can be a useful tool for students looking to lighten their load, as well as organize all their reading material in one place. Not only that, e-versions of books tend to be less expensive than their traditional counterparts, which can over time, represent significant cost-savings.

• Wearable tech: With multiple alarms that can help students keep track of class schedules, a Casio Pro Trek Watch is not only helpful oncampus or when learning remotely but is also a great outdoor companion. With GPS, location memory, water resistance and triple sensor technology, those looking to get outdoors after sitting in front of a computer for hours on end will find its features useful on the trail or lake. With some preparation and the right tools, college students can look forward to a successful school year ahead. (StatePoint) l

Teen Social distancing guidelines across the country have made visiting a conventional movie theater difficult, if not impossible. However, what was once a relic of the past has now become an innovation in entertainment, the drive-in movie theater.

TIPS FOR ENJOYING A DRIVE-IN

T

he drive-in movie theater is nearly as old as the automobile itself. While today, there are about 300 drive-in theaters across the country, many more are popping up wherever there is space. Indeed, Walmart recently announced more than 160 of its parking lots will be converted into drive-in movie theaters around the country and many small businesses are doing the same. “A drive-in movie is the ideal event for anyone with a car because they can get out for a drive to enjoy a common experience with friends and family while taking appropriate social distancing precautions, says Rah Mahtani, marketing communications manager for MINI USA. To shed light on this rediscovered institution of cinema, MINI USA created a guide for drivers to help them make the most of the experience. Here are five of their top tips:

1

Arrive early. Many theaters allow

guests to arrive up to an hour before the show begins. Take advantage of this time to pick the best parking spot and stretch your legs. If the snack bar is open, grab a treat!

2

Bring the right car. A MINI

Convertible is ideal for an open-air viewing experience under the stars, while the MINI Countryman has room for the whole family.

xperience

3

Bring snacks. If your drive-

in allows it, bring your favorite movieviewing snacks like popcorn, soft pretzels, candy, and soda.

4

Safely enjoy with friends.

You can still safely go to the movies with your friends while staying socially distanced. Meet at a nearby location to rally to the drive-in in separate cars. If you’re a MINI owner, check with your local MINI owner’s club about a drive-in movie rally. You can even bring two-way radios or set up a group chat on your phone for live commentary of the movie.

5

Pack strategically. Be sure to pack a blanket in case there’s an evening chill in the air. A small pillow can also help support your back through the movie. Bring a small trash bag, too for all your wrappers, empty cups, and popcorn buckets. And lastly, if your car doesn’t already have one, bring a phone charger. No drive-in theater near you? No problem. Try hosting your own. For more drive-in tips and fun facts, visit miniusa.com/drivein. It’s no secret that over the past several months, almost everything we took for granted in our lives has changed dramatically, even nights at the movies. By taking a cue from the past, you can still enjoy the silver screen with extended family and friends. (StatePoint) l

Teen HOW HEALTHY SLEEP CAN

SetStudentsUp ForSuccess

Healthy sleep is vital as students prepare for success in school. Yet, a new survey from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)* shows many students are not getting enough sleep, according to more than half of American parents surveyed.

N

o matter where classes are held - in-person, online or in a hybrid format - the AASM is highlighting the importance of healthy sleep for students during the first-ever Student Sleep Health Week, Sept. 14-20, 2020. “As many parents and caregivers try to create a routine for their kids, incorporating the right amount of healthy sleep is an important component,” said AASM President Dr. Kannan Ramar.

What’s Keeping Kids Up on School Nights?

From classwork to social media use, there are many things competing for the attention of school-aged children and teens, interfering with their nightly sleep. According to 90% of parents, homework and early school start times are the top barriers impacting the healthy sleep students need each night, followed by time with friends (87%), social media/electronics use (86%), hobbies (86%), sports (85%), chores or jobs (83%), and band/music/clubs (78%).

COVID-19 Impact on Sleep Consistency Another disrupter to sleep? The COVID-19 pandemic. One of the biggest challenges students have been facing during the pandemic has been maintaining a consistent and healthy sleep/ wake schedule. According to the AASM, four out of 10 parents acknowledge that remote learning affects their children’s bedtime and/or waketime consistency.

FLUENTIAL SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2020

“Even though students may not need to catch the bus or carpool this school year, they should continue with morning and bedtime rituals, including getting up and going to bed at regular times so they get enough sleep,” added Dr. Ramar.

Parents are Aware of Impact of Sleep About 94% of parents acknowledge that sleep impacts their children’s mood, and 93% understand its correlation to performance in school. Impacts on physical health (92%), mental health (90%), and performance in sports or other activities (90%) are also widely reported by parents. HEALTH & WELLNESS well, they need to be examined promptly. However, it’s not always obvious that something is affecting your cat’s health, and in the context of a pandemic, it may not be clear how to address concerns. In honor of its annual #Cat2Vet campaign, which aims to improve the lives of cats by encouraging owners to schedule regular veterinary checkups, the experts at Royal Canin offer these tips for becoming more curious about your cat’s health.

Potential Health Signals If your cat is otherwise acting normal, there may be a few hints that he or she isn’t feeling well. Watch for weight loss, changes in appetite or water intake, coughing or sneezing, acting lethargic, vomiting, changes in stool quality and more or less urine in the litter box. If there’s anything unusual going on with your cat, ask your vet if you have concerns. The staff at your clinic can help you determine if a visit is necessary.

Accessing Veterinary Care

open if needed as veterinarian clinics are considered essential businesses. Some veterinarians are also offering telehealth services for pet owners. In addition, Royal Canin offers cat owners free access to Ask.Vet’s chat service. The service provides access to licensed veterinarians from the safety of your home 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Simply sign up at Ask.Vet or text “chatnow” to 67076 to be connected with a veterinarian who can answer health-related questions.

Preparing for a Visit Especially for cats who are not accustomed to regular vet visits, a trip when they’re already feeling unwell can be stressful. Consider these tips to help ease the experience: Rather than keeping the cat carrier hidden away, make it accessible for your cat to get familiar and comfortable with the way it looks and smells. Make daily time for activities like brushing and nail trims that help desensitize your cat to being touched. Use pheromone wipes and sprays to help relax your cat and reduce stress before the trip. Play calming music at an appropriate volume to help calm cats at home and in the car on the way to the vet.

• • •

Many clinics offer curbside services where pet owners stay outside instead of entering the clinic. You can tell your veterinarian about your concerns over the phone while he or she examines your cat. Another option is mobile veterinary services, which are available in many areas. Mobile services can be utilized for routine visits, sick visits, hospice visits or other specialized care. Emergency clinics and specialty hospitals are also

YOUR GUIDE TO RESPONSIBLE RECREATION Why Wyoming? Wyoming is the least populous state in the country - even though it’s the 10th largest in terms of surface area - with 48% of the state Federal Public Land and nearly 6% State Public Land. Being a mindful traveler is key when exploring Wyoming’s wilderness. The staff of the Lander, Wyoming-based National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) are experts in wilderness education, helping prepare adventurers to experience the great outdoors. For those unfamiliar with an area, it is important to slow down and choose lower-risk activities to reduce risk of injury, especially as many healthcare resources are strained at this time. Visitors can encounter wildlife anywhere in the West but be sure to always keep a safe distance. Stay at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves, and at least 25 yards away from other animals, such as bison and elk.
