OUR PUBLISHER’S NOTE beacon of hope for our community, and we’re thrilled to be moving our operation toward a better tomorrow despite the circumstances surrounding COVID-19. Over the past few weeks, there has been concentrated focus on improving racial equality. Racial equality occurs when individuals and institutions give equal opportunities to people of all races. In other words, regardless of physical traits such as skin color, everyone is treated equality particularly from legal, moral, and other societal perspectives; quite simply “we love our neighbors as ourselves”. We’re profoundly moved by so many stories we get to hear of selfless service in our communities, and it’s so comforting to see challenging times bring out the best in many. The Teen InFluential family is a small business, and we consider our staff family. We want to thank our advertisers and partners for making this edition possible, and for helping to keep us afloat. Again, we’re touched by so many who are moved to expand beyond themselves and think about others in an effort to embrace, understand, and accept differences as the spice that makes life so much more colorful, interesting, happy, and fulfilling.
Hello Teen InFluential Family, We’re continuing our journey through challenging times. There’s no way anyone could’ve predicted with accuracy we’d ever experience a world-wide pandemic playing out during our lifetime. Our compassionate and empathetic hearts continue to go out to those whose families have been impacted. I do my best to remain positive, though increasingly challenging, as the situation has resulted in months of uncertainty. Like many, our team has experienced several challenges, and has had to learn and incorporate new ways to conduct our regular business. We remain committed to doing whatever we must to continue to serve as a

With the right online platforms, teachers can continue students’ science learning outside of school.

SucceedinScience? the role it plays in society. Science literacy can no longer be a luxury or an add-on in an age when it should be embedded into how every sector responds to complex challenges.
The Shift to Remote Learning For many young people, their first introduction to science at school is through teachers, who clearly deserve appreciation and the deepest thanks right now. Yet as teachers everywhere - 63 million primary and secondary teachers around the world, according to UN News - have had to rapidly transition to online learning to reach the 1.2 billion children currently out of school around the world, many don’t have the resources and support they need to teach successfully. Among schools in the United States, teachers in the most economically disadvantaged districts are least likely to be able to provide online learning opportunities for all students, according to Education Week. Today’s school closures magnify the inequities that were always present in society and schooling before COVID-19. So how can science teachers, far from their classrooms, best encourage a scientific mindset that is needed now more than ever to understand the world? One solution is LabXchange, an online community for learning, sharing and collaboration. This free platform,
launched by Harvard University and the Amgen Foundation, makes science accessible to hundreds of thousands of high school and college students.
Online Science Platforms Support Teachers
Meeting Teachers’ and Students’ Needs
Well-designed programs should put teachers in the driver’s seat. In-person lab programs like the 30-year-old Amgen Biotech Experience have laid a strong groundwork for how best to reach students, especially those in underserved communities, by engaging them in science. While technology is best used to complement or supplement in-person instruction, the Amgen Biotech Experience labs are now available virtually through LabXchange, showing how an online experience can be used to teach lab skills remotely.
LabXchange’s virtual simulations remove barriers of expensive equipment, safety issues, and the extra time teachers need to prepare materials for school labs, which is beneficial now more than ever when teachers are shifting how they deliver science education. Free, comprehensive online platforms like LabXchange, Khan Academy and others can meaningfully advance students’ learning and interest in science, even With new online platforms, science when they aren’t at school. teachers can remix high-quality, curated resources into customized learning “When young people learn science, pathways for different groups of stuthey need to be able to make mistakes, dents with different needs. Students at Mohave High School in Bullhead City, Ariz. reconsidered their project when quarantine began, creating a readaloud library of developmentally appropriate books for preschoolers. With high schoolers reading preschoolers books and teaching them literacy and social development skills, this resource allowed an early childhood program to continue virtually. “The students developed a ‘can do attitude’ while working collaboratively to
adapt to their new normal,” said teacher, Michele Leyendecker. “With so much uncertainty, this project truly gave them purpose.” The “T-Bird Readers” team was awarded Lead4Change’s grand prize, a $10,000 grant for a nonprofit of their choice.
The Corona Relief Crew was also honored with Lead4Change’s $10,000 grand prize for their initiative. For more information about the Lead4Change Student Leadership Program, visit lead4change.org.
In Garner, N.C., students participated in service learning and emerged as community leaders by directly addressing the local impact of the pandemic. The “Corona Relief Crew” collaborated with volunteers and vendors to create and distribute kits with essential food and supplies for the homeless and those in nursing homes who have been severely impacted by the pandemic.
While distance learning’s impact on students’ education has been unprecedented, this disruption also has presented a unique opportunity for students to overcome obstacles and grow as leaders. With a service-learning project, students can gain a sense of purpose, lead real change in their local community and maintain a sense of unity that is integral during challenging times. O
ver four in ten undergraduate students are now concerned about their ability to pay for college, and feel the pandemic has impacted their academics, mental health and financial well-being, according to a recent College Ave Student Loans survey conducted by Barnes & Noble College Insights. Additionally, the survey found that many students are also worried about how the pandemic may affect their parent’s ability to pay. If you fall into this category, consider these options for managing college costs:
• Scholarships: If scholarships were not part of your previous college payment plan, consider researching and applying to those you qualify for now. This “free” money option can alleviate some of the burden of a tuition bill without requiring any repayment on your part down the line. Don’t assume it’s too late to apply. There are many scholarship opportunities with rolling deadlines.
•
Side gigs: Parents and students alike can consider earning some extra income through the gig economy. Whether that’s tutoring, freelancing, or opening a store on a site like Etsy, there are a number of ways to bring in extra cash.
• Bite-size bills: If paying college tuition in a lump sum is no longer feasible for your family, find out whether your school offers an installment plan. Even if this option was not offered during previous academic years, the bursar’s office may have changed its
policy in these unusual times. Be sure you understand the terms of the plan, as there may be fees or interest charges.
•
Private student loans: After exhausting scholarships and grant options, seek out federal loans in the student’s name first, since these come with low rates and unique benefits such as income-based repayment plans only found with federal student loans. If these options don’t adequately cover all your college costs, private student loans are another option to fill the gap. Weigh this decision carefully. A student loan calculator, taking into account the number of years you are in school, the loan amount and the loan term, can be an invaluable tool in understanding what you can afford and if you should borrow to pay for college.
Heading off to college is exciting, and a time full of endless possibilities. However, circumstances have changed for many American families over the past several months as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and you may be wondering how you will pay your upcoming college tuition bill and other school-related costs.
There are several private student loan options available at College Ave Student Loans, for example, including private parent loans. Their student loan application, which takes just three minutes to complete, offers an instant credit decision, so there is no period of uncertainty. To learn more, visit collegeavestudentloans.com. “While you may have some uncertainty about the future, there are concrete steps your family can take to confidently tackle your upcoming college tuition bill, book expenses, housing costs and other school fees,” says Joe DePaulo, cofounder and CEO of College Ave Student Loans. heir debut sauce, Diablo Verde, was originally sold as a fundraiser for rhino conservation which turned into a family business. In just under three years the company has won numerous awards, including Grand Champion for HEB’s Quest for Texas Best, raised over $4,700 and brought awareness to the issue effecting the rhino species. Diablo Verde is carried in over 250 stores throughout Texas, sold in stores in Colorado, Mississippi, and Alabama. They have a successful online commerce business, and are currently expanding their wholesale market throughout the United States. This summer, 3SonsFoods is excited to be launching their newest sauce, Diablo Vegan. Diablo Vegan is a dairy free, animal free, creamy cilantro sauce that will benefit wolf conservation. Traci has been featured on ABC, KPRC, KHOU, FOX, Houston Chronicle, and Katy Times, among others. Traci and her sons are currently featured in a HEB commercial highlighting Diablo Verde and their journey to winning Grand Champion for HEB Quest for Texas Best. Starting with her careers in the performing arts and real estate industries, Traci is known for her entrepreneurial spirit, as well as her, excellent work ethic, positive spirit, drive, and passion for exceeding her goals. Traci is extremely proud to be in business with her sons and takes great pride in teaching them all about how entrepreneurship can make the world a better place by giving back. There are many sleepless nights thinking of the correct amount of cilantro, heat levels of jalapenos, and fresh squeezed lime juice, but I do have a passion for food so it’s all part of why our sauce is so addictive and delicious. I personally love food and love food as medicine, and I’ve always taught the boys what effects, good and bad, food will have on their bodies. All the boys cook, and we all started this business making sauce at night in our own kitchen as a fundraiser. When we decided to become a real business, the boys and I’d go to the commercial kitchen and work all day and night to make Diablo Verde. It’s been an amazing journey full of lots of hard work. We’re lucky, to have a raving fan base and Diablo Fans word of mouth is the best form of advertisement. William: Your company’s Vision is “To make the world a better place through Entrepreneurship by manufacturing and selling healthy, all-natural great tasting food!” Tell us what is most important about this Vision? Traci: Our family’s preference is to eat healthy, and all natural. We believe making the world a better place is not only about saving endangered species, but by using foods in their natural state, without chemicals and additives, and this too, makes the world a better place.
William: One challenge of growing a food business are the many, every changing dietary preferences of consumers. You also have unique insights into consumer behavior. What trends are you seeing? Traci: Of course, Gluten Free, Keto Friendly has recently been added to our marketing, and vegan. Since I’m also a consumer and lover of food, it’s not hard to stay updated. What is important to me and my family’s health will most likely be important to other consumers. William: How do we get people to reflect on nutrition where money is also involved; what ís the balance? Traci: Currently, in our society we’re seeing good nutrition is a luxury. Processed food with added flavorings and food chemicals is easier and cheaper to produce. We believe the more the consumer is educated about the effects of the food they are intaking, the better choices they’ll make, hopefully resulting in better health. For us, I’d rather spend money on buying blueberries that lower your risk of cancer and heart disease then buying highly processed food and medicine to combat the effects of an unhealthy diet. William: Name a food trend you believe hasn’t peaked yet and might be the next big thing. Traci: Clearly, cooking more at home has been true since March and in our current COVID-19 lives it’ll most likely continue. Hopefully, more people will look at food as preventative medicine. William: Where else is there room for improvement in the industry as a whole right now? Traci: Honestly, there are many things that can be improved. From removing the ability for food companies to include chemicals and additives into our food, to making it mandatory all animals sold for consumption shall be raised cage free and free

range. Our health is causally related to what we’re putting into our bodies. Every time a consumer decides to buy preservative free, all natural, cage free, range free, no added additives, they’re letting the industry know what they want and demand for a better life. William: As a business leader, what advice would you give to local business leaders? Traci: Visualizing is the key to making your dreams a reality. William: Do you have any non-negotiables for when it comes to family time for allowing you all to slow down and not get caught up in the daily frenzy? Traci: Dinner is spent together most evenings. As a busy working single Mom, I make it a point to stop somewhere throughout my day, make eye contact with each boy, and listen to what they’re saying. It’s not unusual for me to make an appointment on my calendar to spend one of one time with them. I’m a bit of a workaholic, so running a business with my boys demands

The other day, I stopped work, told all my deadlines to give me an hour, “I promised the boys we’d paint the floor” See, we were getting rid of our 16 year-old carpet that weekend, so we spray painted it as a way to say goodbye to the old carpet. William: Have there been any consequences for 3SonsFoods, LLC because of the shutdown of the U.S. government? Traci: When people go through stressful times, reaching out to a comfort food can help. Diablo Verde makes a great enchilada sauce, or sauce for pasta, on top of chicken it’s versatile and comforting. So, we saw a surge in orders during the initial shutdown. William: What is your morning ritual? Nighttime ritual? Traci: Morning sets the tone for our entire day. problem solving, and obtaining focus. Since this is the only alone time, I’m able to steal sometimes, it helps me deal with the stress of the constant interruption that living and working with three teenage boys can create. Nighttime is a bit of television, yoga, bed, and reading; however, if I can’t sleep, you’ll find me with a laptop just trying to get a few more things completed. I’ve been woken up several times by George folding up my computer, so clearly there’s room for improvement in my nighttime routine. William: Who would you invite to your dream dinner party? Traci: Ellen, Oprah, the boys, my best friends, and our team. William: What does community mean to you and how has it supported you, your family, and your business? Traci: We wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of our friends, neighbors, and Diablo Fans. We feel so blessed to have had the support of so many and thank God every day for every person we’ve met along the way.
William: Traci, how do you impress upon your young sons the value of education and the importance of being positive, contributing members of the community? Traci: The value of education is important to me as a mother. I didn’t complete my college education; however, I’ve continued to educate myself. In today’s world, with the internet at our fingers, education is easily achieved and important in everything we do. College is in my son’s future, but they also know it’s not mandatory. Continuous education, on the other hand, is mandatory throughout life. “Integrity is doing the right things when no one is watching”, is a quote from C.S. Lewis and a lesson I learned from my friends which I’ve instilled in my sons. Helping others and contributing to our community and our global community is ingrained in who we are. BEAUTYQUE NYC IS REINVENTING

FEATURE Amid the pandemic, a new way to experience beauty has launched disrupting the traditional retail space both for consumers and brands. Beautyque NYC Co-Founders Sonia Khemiri and Sylvie Giret, made a major pivot in their new interactive, virtual shopping, education, and beauty brand experience for customers – all from the comfort of the consumer’s home.

“Beautyque NYC is not only a place to shop. Before anything else, it’s a place to learn about beauty, wellness, and skincare and to discover new brands they connect to”, Sonia explains. “Too many times, consumers are influenced

Teen by trends, what they should use, buy, or do when it comes to beauty.” At Beautyque, customers are given the opportunity to understand and make their own choices for beauty and wellness. “Beautyque is a non-aggressive environment where consumers can browse, attend educational, or brand events, look up videos where they can hear directly from the founder what their brand is about, and choose wisely, also by discovering brands not necessarily popular yet, but set new standards in their category”, Sylvie explains. Before shopping, Beautyque’s primary mission is to help consumers understand, learn, and even in some cases engage with its beauty partner brands. “We want to bring people topics they’re interested in, that makes them grow and be more confident about their beauty,” Sylvie continues. “And brands that have a solid base, mission, and set of values, and of course high-quality products that deliver results.” The store experience was important in the design for this new retail and brand experience model. “We want them to feel they’re visiting a store. People miss going to a store, trying products first-hand, talking to someone to help, and shopping in a nice and exciting environment”, Sonia believes. “Creating excitement is part of the shopping experience.” Integrating a 3D virtual experience is a pivotal difference for Beautyque NYC. “Creating a Web site is so basic

FEATURE Beautyque not only is about skincare and cosmetics, it’s about mental empowerment, sexual health, and nutrition. “As the French saying ‘Etre bien dans sa peau’ (feel good about yourself ) is an overall thing we want to offer at Beautyque”, Sonia says. “We want women and men to come and visit us to feel good no matter their age, race, or skin/body issues. We are already starting to create events for mental health and nutrition. And we are planning to do much more to cover whatever makes us feel beautiful even during these tough times.”
and boring, and there are already plenty out there. We wanted to translate and copy what we initially wanted to create in our physical platform”, both Sonia and Sylvie explain. “We did not invent the 3D technology, but we invented the process of combining them all together. The 3D and the Web site to be the closest possible to a real physical experience, combining a showroom and a store experience.” This experience model also showcases Beautyque’s brands and gives them a place where they can shine and be displayed like in a real store and test the response from consumers to their products and messages. “With the COVID situation and the ‘new normal’ that is going to come out of it, we believed it was a natural evolution in retail, that both brands and consumers can benefit from”, Sonia adds. “As retail continues to shift, one thing for sure is much is going to be achieved through digital, and stores will become
more touchpoints and discovery places, more than ever before.” This means brands have the challenge to be understood and seen through the digital channels, she continues. “Beautyque helps brands with being seen, and testing and adjusting their messages to strengthen impact. The learnings and adjustments they make through Beautyque will help them adjust their own marketing and expand from there.” Another consumer benefit for this new retail model is people can join the BeautyQlub where they can be part of a product review and testing program, and access perks all from the comfort of their home and in one retail channel. “As opposed to traditional stores, we don’t assess our choice of brands on how much success they already have in order to guarantee our own sales but according to how we can help and how their products can benefit the customer”, according to Sylvie.
Virtual events are a keystone to Beautyque’s educational value. To illustrate, Beautyque held an event in June with two boar-certified holistic health coaches on the topic of managing stress and anxiety both in and out of lockdown. The co-founders also hosted a live product demo with SNOW and Fresh Faced Skincare. Moving forward, plans are to create both brand and wellness events weekly and welcome brands around Beautyque’s seven beauty pillars: Mental Empowerment, Nutrition, Sexual Wellness & Intimate Care, Skincare; Makeup, and Accessories. “We’re building Beautyque in a way that it’s a resource center for brands related to Beauty, Health, and Wellness and THE SPACE to go learn and find the last best thing to make consumers feel and look more beautiful”, Sonia and Sylvie say. “In both ways, we love seeing these two communities of brands and customers thrive.” To learn more visit www.beautyque.nyc. l

or those businesses able to reopen, it’s usually for limited hours with limited offerings, which dramatically cuts profit. Unlike chain stores, independent small businesses lack access to a large parent company and the resources - including large capital reserves that typically come with it. As summer begins, we are starting to see more local businesses open safely. During this time of transition and beyond, these businesses need your support. Consider your local bakeries, for example. Recent coronavirus restrictions are impacting small and medium-sized bakeries particularly. Beyond serving delicious breads, cakes, pastries and donuts, independent bakeries often play a vital role in their local communities, providing affordable baked goods made with skill and passion. Bakeries also offer employment, and support the community in other ways, including sponsoring and participating in events and activities. Local businesses support their respective economies, and now more than ever, they need the help of their residents. One way to help your community thrive is to support your local entrepreneurs. While there are many, here are the top four reasons to support your local bakery this summer and beyond:
more popular in the West during the first month of social distancing, according to a recent Grubhub report. Fortunately, quarantine and social distancing don’t mean giving up your favorite treats from local bakers. Many independent bakeries are modifying services and menu options to continue to serve customers in a safe way. This includes things like limited hours, curbside pickup, and at-home assembly kits so people have everything they need to decorate a delicious treat at home with the bakery quality they enjoy.
2. You get access to
the freshest variety of specialty treats. The baking spirit has inspired many people while social distancing. The Economist reported that searches for flour and other ingredients soared, as did other Google searches related to baking. Baking at home is a wonderful activity, but your treats probably don’t taste the same as your favorite baker’s offerings. Why? Bakers have years of expertise and the finest ingredients to make foods that just can’t be replicated at home. While people are struggling to find baking staples like yeast and flour at their local grocery, many bakers get supplies

3. Bakers give back to their communities.
Bakers are the heart of a community. They help memorialize important moments and events in everyone’s lives. Supporting your local baker means supporting your community. In honor of its 100th anniversary, Dawn recognized the efforts of ten bakers across the United States, who give back their time, talents and means to local causes, and helped them expand their local efforts. For example, Pasticcini Bakery in Weymouth, Massa-

The SmallCakes Cupcakery and Creamery located in Baltimore, Maryland, recently donated to a local farming co-op that looks to open a grocery store dedicated to bringing healthy food options to a community experiencing food scarcity. No matter what the cause, local bakers go above and beyond to identify needs within the community.

morable milestones. While graduations, anniversaries, and family get-togethers look a little different during COVID-19, a delicious baked good from a local bakery is a simple yet effective way to celebrate and bring a smile to everyone’s face during difficult times. Call your local bakery to check availability and open hours. Placing an order and picking up a treat helps you make any day special. You’ll be able to chat with your local baker - a simple pleasure many have missed as we shelter-in-place. As an added bonus, you can feel good about supporting someone who’s dedicated to the community and working hard, rising at the crack of dawn, to keep their dream alive and maintain a small business during tough times. Teen HOW TO CLEAN UP YOUR SUMMER
GrillingGame T
here’s something about summertime that ushers in an easygoing spirit. The long, hot summer months are often celebrated with backyard barbecues, beach days and spending time with friends and family. It’s a time to fire up the grill, slow down and roll with the punches. So, when you’re thinking about what to feed your family off the grill, it should be a breeze, and you shouldn’t have to choose between good and good for you. Next time you turn on your grill, consider these tips for creating healthier, flavorful meals you can feel confident serving.
Keep it simple. Skip the complicated recipes that call for a wide variety of ingredients, a multitude of steps and long cook times. Instead, seek out products and dishes that are made with ingredients you recognize and have just a handful of instructions. This will ensure less time in the kitchen and more time with loved ones. Aim for a quick and fun cleanup. Perhaps one of the most overlooked secrets to a stress-free meal is to cut down on cleanup. A backyard barbecue can be one of the easiest messes to maintain as most of the prep is done outside on the grill. Try setting up a buffet line on your deck or patio where your family can build their burgers with customized toppings, like cheese, veggies, and sauces. Teen Spending a lot more time at home indoors these days or adjusting to going back outside? New habits and big lifestyle changes can have an effect on one’s skin.
H
ere are some of the more common skin care issues associated with life today and their solutions, some of which can be easily found at the drugstore:
• Dry skin: Our new reality of wearing masks can have a drying effect on our skin. But you can easily enhance your skin’s own moisture-retention with a serum-containing dermatologistrecommended hyaluronic acid. “Using gentle and lightweight skincare, especially now that the temperatures are rising, will properly hydrate your skin without clogging the pores, even under a mask. Hyaluronic acid products, such as serums, that are correctly formulated will also help plump the skin and reduce wrinkles,” says Dr. Rocio Rivera, VP of scientific communications, L’Oréal Paris. For long lasting hydration, apply two to three drops of L’Oréal Paris 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum to the face and neck every morning and evening – its lightweight and fast-absorbing texture works well under a mask.
• Not prioritizing me-time: If you have a lot going on these days, you

may forget to take some time for self-care. Beyond your skin care routine -- which you should continue to maintain -- you can also promote a healthy-looking glow by prioritizing sleep, eating a well-balanced diet, staying hydrated and getting regular exercise.
“Sun protection equals skin health and it is the most important age preventive product in your skincare routine. A broad spectrum SPF formula is always a must: Rain or shine, indoors, outdoors, and yes -- all over the face, includes under the mask,” says Dr. Rocio Rivera.
• Light exposure: Spending large portions of the day indoors unfortunately doesn’t eliminate risks associated with light exposure. With more screen
time comes increased exposure to blue light. What’s more, you are still susceptible to incidental sun exposure coming in through windows of your home and car. Refresh and protect your skin with a moisturizer that also has broad spectrum SPF, such as L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple PowerSPF 30, which can be smoothed over the face and neck every morning. Formulated with pro-retinol, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid, it will make your skin feel smooth, soft and refreshed after use.
• Lack of glow: For many, skin glow is a key sign of skin health, and while you may not be catching as many rays outdoors these days to achieve this, there is an aesthetically-pleasing and much healthier way to achieve a sun-kissed glow without the damage and pre-mature aging caused by UV exposure. Stash your cabinet with the latest innovation from L’Oréal Paris, Sublime Bronze Water Mousse. Its clear
liquid formula delivers a seamless, streak-free application and quick absorption for a natural-looking bronze tan that does not transfer. Infused with coconut water and vitamin E, it leaves skin soft and beachy-smelling. For best results, shake well. Pump into hands and smooth evenly over clean, exfoliated skin. Allow four to eight hours for the color to fully develop before showering. For a longer-lasting tan, apply three times over 12 to 24 hours. Wash hands thoroughly after use. Let skin dry completely before putting on clothes.

Visitors can click on some familiar images and learn why images of American Indians are everywhere in our country. The bilingual exhibition “The Great Inka Road: Engineering an Empire” examines why the Inka Road was built more than
500 years ago, and how its construction—without the use of metal or iron, the wheel or stock animals to pull heavy loads—stands as one of the greatest engineering feats. The exhibition “Infinity of Nations: Art and History in the Collections of the National Museum of the American Indian,” which features some 700 works of Native art from throughout North, Central and South America, demonstrates the breadth of the museum’s collection and highlights the historic importance of many of these iconic objects. “Developing Stories: Native Photographers in the Field“ is the museum’s

6 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE MAKING THE JUMP Considering the economic challenges, the world is faced with today, including some of the highest unemployment numbers in recent history, now could be an excellent time to begin a career as a freelancer.
R
ecent nationwide furloughs and layoffs caused by the struggling economy and the social distancing necessitated by COVID-19 make that particularly true. But statistics show the number of freelancers has been growing over the past decade, partly because people enjoy the flexibility, control and better work-life balance that can come with the role. And independent contractors span a range of

professions these days, from law to graphic design to engineering. In a survey conducted in the nation’s top 30 cities for freelancing last year, for example, some six million independent contractors were collectively earning $150 billion. Some of the largest markets for freelancers these days? New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, D.C. Nashville and Austin are also up-and-comers, with the population of skilled freelancers growing by 26% and 27%, respectively, between 2012 and 2017. Miami’s skilled freelance workforce contributes most to its overall city GDP, making up a full 2.3%. Here are notable advantages to consider if you’re mulling a move to the freelance lifestyle.

Job Satisfaction
Digital technology enables work-athome capabilities for those who may not have had that option in the past, allowing those in many professions to work entirely online while keeping a safe distance from COVID-19 and other possible threats. Though many people find their freelance work through word-of-mouth or social media, a full 18% now find their clients through online marketplaces such as Fiverr, according to the survey. Last year Fiverr connected 2.4 million customers with independent contractor clients from more than 160 countries across the globe.
Those who freelance often see their work as more rewarding than others. In the Fiverr survey, for example, seven of 10 U.S. freelancers called their work highly satisfying, compared to about half of U.S. workers in general. The primary reasons for that added satisfaction? The freedom to work from home, the flexibility of the work schedules and the interesting nature of their work.
Healthy Paychecks Because they can control their own pricing, profit margins and productivity, many freelancers earn more working for themselves than for others. And they’re not expecting their revenues to change significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic; the Fiverr survey found that 59% of independent contractors surveyed expected to earn equal or increased revenues in 2020.
Income Equality Men and women both find success through freelancing, and the gender pay gap seems to be a non-issue among freelancers. Of freelancers worldwide working through Fiverr, for instance, 44% are women - and they earn almost 20% more than the men. For many, the option of becoming an independent contractor is becoming more and more attractive. Ready to become your own boss? WAYS TO HELP
Pollinators Flourish
You may already be aware that pollinators are important to everyone on the planet. But did you know that one in every three bites of food is made possible by native pollinators?
P
ollinators such as bees, butterflies, flies, bats and hummingbirds transfer pollen between flowers and other plants, helping them grow and produce the fruit and vegetables we all eat - and that our beloved pets eat. Because pollinators help grow the pumpkins, apples and cranberries used to make Beyond, a sustainability-minded natural pet food, the team has collaborated with The Nature Conservancy to initiate Project Blossom, with the mission of helping protect the declining population of pollinators. Purina’s Beyond has donated $100,000 to The Nature Conservancy to help its mission to support a healthy planet, to protect pollinators. “The Nature Conservancy works around the globe to protect pollinators from challenges such as the loss and degradation of habitat, climate change and more,” said Chris Helzer, director of science for the Nature Conservancy in Nebraska. “By

partnering with Beyond and being a part of Project Blossom, we are advancing our work to support a healthy planet for pollinators and all the other species we rely on for a healthy ecosystem.”
How You Can Help Here are some simple things you can do to help pollinators thrive. They are fun, easy, and educational projects you can enjoy with the whole family, especially while you’re spending more time at home and in your own yard and garden.
1. Learn Kids find pollinators fascinating, and there’s a lot to learn about what they do for our ecosystem. Visit The Nature Conservancy website as a starting point to discover more about how pollinators work. Check out other websites, books or local outdoor gardens to explore native plants and pollinators that live in your area. Make a list, map and/or photo project

to describe what kinds of pollinators help which plants grow in your region. Seek out resources to learn more about different types of pollinators and the threats they face. For example, when most people talk about bees, they assume honeybee, but there are more than 5,000 species of bees found in North America alone that need our support.
•
2. Plant Once you’ve identified regional plants, flowers, and shrubs that pollinators love, decide which ones to add to your outdoor space. Involve the whole family in growing a variety of pollinator-friendly plants outside your home. Avoid using pesticides in your yard or garden and learn which ones are least likely to affect bees and pollinators. If you have limited outdoor space, use a small raised garden bed or a planter on your deck, balcony, or patio. Set up a pollinator window box.

LIFESTYLE 3. Make Collect supplies, like pieces of wood, and involve your kids in making a small project to help sustain pollinator communities in your own backyard. Build a bee house, bat house or insect house to attract pollinators and give them shelter. Create a freshwater feature like a pond or bird bath that pollinators can use for drinking.
• •
•
Post pictures of your pollinator projects or gardens to inspire others to join your efforts. “We’re committed to keeping pets healthy and happy, which is why we’re committed to helping protect our planet and ultimately, pollinators that play an important role in our ingre-
dient sourcing,” said Diane Herndon, senior manager of sustainability at Purina Beyond. “At Beyond, we hope Project Blossom will inspire people everywhere to help protect pollinators that play a vital role in nutritious ingredients that go in our cat and dog recipes.” Visit BeyondPetFood.com/ProjectBlossom to learn more about what you can do to help your neighborhood be a friendlier place for much-needed pollinators. (BPT) l
4. Donate Make a monetary contribution to the cause. Make a donation to The Nature Conservancy, which helps conserve and protect land and water around the world. Consider encouraging donations from friends and family.

5. Share An easy way to spread awareness about pollinators is to create a conversation about them on social media. Share the Project Blossom website with friends and family.
