Holly: Even under duress, my husband and I stay kind to each other. We work hard to preserve one night a week for “date night.”

IPM: As a dynamic duo, what is your secret to success in the real estate market? Holly: As a team, my husband and I recognize and build on our strengths. Our communication is the foundation to successful transactions. We identify the role each will play with the clients. IPM: What would you recommend for other’s trying to start their own real estate company? Holly: Do your research. As far as being an independent contractor or Realtor®, find someone you respect in the industry, and shadow them for a period of time. I would

IPM: Do you have any tips for First Time Home Buyers? Holly: Define what you can afford. Identify what you want, vs. what you need. Never have more than your top three choices on your list of homes. Once you choose “the one” always have a professional licensed and bonded home inspector perform the inspection report on the property. Then listen to your gut. IPM: For those who want to have a business relationship with their spouse, how do you effectively maintain work/life boundaries? Holly: In Real Estate, you can’t leave your work at the office. This is why couples who work together should protect “date night.” One evening a week, no work is discussed. Remember, clients expect Realtors® to be available long hours and any day of the week. This is why it’s hard to leave work at the door when you get home. IPM: You mentioned that you are an internationally recognized speaker, what made

you chose that path? Holly: After running for political office, I realized that holding office wasn’t my path to success. I attended events around the world and worked hard to earn leadership accreditations and business certifications to further my entrepreneurial endeavors. IPM: What would you say is the most difficult part of being an internationally recognized speaker? Holly: The speaking circuit takes time and financial sacrifice. I never realized what it took to be seen. No one does it alone. It takes a tribe.

IPM: When did you first realize you wanted to write your own book and become a publisher? Holly: Since I was a child, I have always wanted to write my own book. A compilation book was the fastest way to publish my first one. It became a #1 International best seller and launched a series of three called “The Rules Books.’ There are 110 Authors total in the series. The experience of publishing my first 4 books, led me to open my own publishing company. I now focus on helping others get their message out to the world. IPM: Do you have a secret you would like to share about becoming a number one best-selling author? Holly:

Holly: Those who know me, know that I stay the path and always do what I say I will do. Knowing that others count on me motivates me to do better every day. IPM: Do you have an important message that you would like to share with our readers? Holly: Your life is like a train ride. There will be many stops along the way. Stay on track. IPM: What advice would you have for a someone wanting to become a writer? Holly: My tip to writing: Don’t overthink it…Get it done, it will never be perfect.…Hire the help you need. IPM: Since you own several businesses in Southern Utah, what obstacles have you faced in the pursuit of your businesses and how did you overcome them? Holly: I have had nine startup companies which brought me many challenges, successes and learning opportunities. I’m an early adapter which has not always been in my favor. I am ahead of my time. My intuition was right, but my timing was off.

Over the past few weeks, I have come across countless examples of how fear becomes the ultimate culture killer! I’m a big football fan, which has changed so much over the past 10 years with foreign investors taking over clubs and turning them into business enterprises. Football has become very much about the results both on and off the field leading to regular media reports of how teams and managers fear getting the boot. This week it was quoted in the Metro newspaper, the Chelsea team fears that their manager Antonio Conte is going to be sacked before the end of the season due to the mixed results from the start of the season. I don’t wish anyone to be sacked however, I am fascinated by where this fear has come from? What’s the

In football, a culture of blame is created if results aren’t going your way. Normally, fingers are pointing straight at the manager in charge. Sports teams are always under pressure to perform at their best. Investors can be ruthless if a team is underperforming. If you’re a football player and you read a story in the newspaper, whether it is true or not, what does that do to the mindset of the players? What happens to the team chemistry, and how does it change the behavior of the players? Does fear exist in your organization?

Most organizations have some kind of fear that holds back their full potential. Fear is disruptive. It can slow organizations down (analysis by paralysis), causes hesitation, unnecessary stress and anxiety, and holds back employees from helping them grow. We recently took on a new client that needed our help. The CEO had a massive fear of failure ingrained into his DNA. We interviewed some of the staff and clients. They were becoming concerned that their CEO’s fear of failure would become a reality. He wanted to grow and scale the business, but he was holding the organiza-


deal with his fears and find out where they originated from. His fears stemmed from life experiences that he brought into his business.

We worked together by creating some new habits and routines that he could start straight away. By the end of the session, he was optimistic about the future of his organization and felt empowered to move forward. I know how you feel… As an entrepreneur you have had times when your little voices and subconscious mind starts to talk negatively. It tells you, “you are not smart enough”, “you are not good enough”, “you not talented enough and you are not worthy”. You become frustrated. Your vision becomes faded. You find it hard to breathe and become stressed and anxious. As a former elite athlete, one of the things I learned from a very young age is how to condition the mind. What does that exactly mean? Will it happen quickly? No, it requires you to repeatedly embed new scripts, mantras, and healthy habits into your life, like I have been doing for most of mine. As a new entrepreneur, I immediately thought that it would be a great idea to become part of a group of like-minded people, with whom I could share all the challenges and joys of the freelance life.

“But I soon sensed, at the coffee meeting, that I wasn’t the ideal candidate because I couldn’t live up to the 60-70 hours per week that they thought were necessary to start up a business.” I knew that it would never be realistic for me, as I have hyperthyroidism. To keep the disease at bay, I have to save energy, relax and achieve balance in life. From experience, I knew that 4 years of part-time study in addition to work–meaning a workweek of 60-65 hours–had taken its toll. I also knew that my future goal was to create a rich work/life balance. In our society, it seems as though the actual number of hours worked is important. Essentially, the more hours, the better. I’ve experienced that in workplaces and industries that appreciate late working hours. But what those people who work quickly and efficiently to get their duties done? It seems as though their work isn’t appreciated unless they’re sitting on their chairs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—or longer. Getting the job done is doable without working 60-70 hours every week. Some people choose to be freelancers because they want more family time, spare time or whatever it may be.

toast while they work 24 hours a day to create a multimilliondollar company. It’s also the story about the person who wants a more peaceful and quiet life, who works less and has more family time.” For me, it means the possibility of living a more balanced life over which I have control. The price I pay is that it takes more time and I use my savings. It’s a personal choice for the individual entrepreneur. But there are surefire ways to live a better life as a freelancer. One of them is to ask for the price you’re worth and to not compare yourself with others. It takes courage but it’s also about knowing the value you give to your customers. I update my knowledge on an ongoing basis within my field (which is HR) by attending conferences, courses and breakfast meetings. It can be frustrating to be on your own with everything. As a solo entrepreneur, you do all the work yourself and you’re the only one to solve all the issues. But there’s a solution to this– for example, to pay someone to help you. I know people who swap services, so to speak. One is a communication expert and the other is in online marketing. Another decision I’ve made is to work until only 3:00 or 3:30 p.m. This allows me to take a break in the afternoons on days when I want to practice my hobbies in the evening. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have the energy for my extracurricular activities.


An OECD research study conducted between 1990-2012 and examining the relationship between hours worked and productivity shows that the more hours one works, the less one’s labor output. It also shows that productivity is highest when employees spend fewer hours working. So, I think it’s possible to have a more balanced life that includes less work. About a year ago, I implemented this system in my business that changed everything. We hit our 90-day targets in three weeks. So I want to share with you today some of the key things that I’ve implemented that will help you reach your entrepreneurship goals much faster and a lot more smoothly because I know what it’s like.

As an entrepreneur, you can often feel like you’re rolling the boulder uphill or you’re just, like, digging through the mud, but today, I want to share with you some of my secrets that I’ve learned over my years of running a business that can help you in yours. And every single week, I’m releasing videos that will help you to grow your business and scale your audience and ROIs, so be sure to subscribe to this channel. And I also have a 21-day Infinite Video Impact Challenge, where over 21 days every single day, I give you a challenge and a lesson and a plan for how you can grow your business. About a year ago, I came across a podcast that changed my life, and I want to introduce you to a man that completely changed, enhanced, overhauled how I run my business and how I look at myself as an entrepreneur, and that man is Alex Charfen, and he is one of my dearest friends and one of my favorite mentors, and he introduced to me this Cadence that he has created. It’s called Charfen Cadence. There are a few different ways that he has taught entrepreneurs how to run and grow and scale their businesses. One of the things that I implemented right away from Alex was this thing called a waterfall, where you plan out your year, kind of like your reverse engineering your biggest outcomes. The way that we do this is we plan for our big objectives that we want to complete in a year. And then we plan for the targets that we want to achieve in 90 days, and the goals we want to hit in the next month. And then the commitments we need to do that week to be able to reach the month, the 90 days, the year targets and objectives. That was incredible for being able to just know the forward planning for my business. Instead of just running day by day by even a daily to-do list, by

knowing what do I actually have to do today to accomplish what I need to complete for this week that’s going to move me forward for the month, that’s going to get me to my 90-day targets, that’s going to get me to my objectives for the full year. Alex talks about this on his podcast, the “Momentum Podcast,” which you should absolutely go download, subscribe to, binge-listen, like, it is the most incredible thing, and finding his podcast and then joining his program completely changed my business. As I said, when we first implemented this, this Cadence and this waterfall, we hit our 90-day targets in three weeks, which means that we’re able to make even bigger goals and hit them even faster, and now our company has grown exponentially. The great thing about installing this waterfall and this Cadence in my business, which you can learn more about through Alex’s podcast, or I’ll link one of his free books that you can get below in the description. The great thing about installing this is that it helped me and my team so much to be able to move forward in this direction together, to know the goals, to know the direction we’re going, to know what we need to do every single day instead of just kind of flying by the seat of our pants or just kind of pottering around our to-do lists. And know that I even installed this into my business when it was just me and an assistant. I didn’t even have the team that I have to this day. Today, I have 15 people on my team and we absolutely, I don’t think I will ever stop, there’s no reason for me to stop using this Cadence because it works because it has made my business grow. Honestly, since I started this program since I started learning from Alex, 500%. So that is something that you should be implementing in your business to know what are my long-term goals, not just what I need to do today, or thinking what are my goals and here are some of the things I need to do to get there.

If you break that down and reverse engineer what the year looks like,


what the 90 days look like, what the month looks like, what this week looks like, and not just for you but for your team when your team knows, here’s what I can own, like for me, if I have my sales and marketing team, they know what their responsibilities are in that department to get us to the year objective, to the 90-day target, to the 30-day goals. This is also going to help you so much that you can delegate, that you can have lateral pressure among the team instead of pressure from the top.

What I mean by that is that I don’t have to micromanage or delegating away that I’m, like, “Hey, did you do that? Awesome. “Did you do that? Awesome. “Did you do that? Awesome.” The whole team knows what they’re responsible for because we have these objectives clearly laid out, that we know what marketing is in charge of, we know what the video production team is in charge of, we know what graphic design is in charge of, and that they can own those things and really take accountability and take ownership of them and feel proud of moving forward with it instead of, like I said, micromanaging to make sure things got done. That’s something that Alex calls transactional management instead of transformational leadership.

But have you ever wondered why morning routines matter, why they work, and what impact they have on your day? Nope, me either, until now that is! Chance are if you are reading this article you are one of three kinds of people: someone who has a morning routine and is wholly committed to it, someone who has always wanted to start a morning routine or just a skeptic who is looking for more ammunition to throw darts at the impact of a morning routine. Whoever you are, I am just glad you’re here. And yes, even the naysayers, because this article is not about data, research, and trying to prove to anyone they need a morning routine. It is just to give you ideas, and insight on the difference a morning routine can make, and how to create or improve yours. Because morning routines only work if you believe in them and are committed to them. So, the first hurdle in creating a morning routine is you. So, if you still think they’re hogwash then there’s no need to read further. But if you’re someone who is on board or inclined that way, let’s look further.

Laying the Foundation for Your Routine Morning routines are powerful because they set the tone for your day. So many of us are overscheduled, busy, and spend our entire day in reactive mode just trying to catch up. Morning routines are the one part of your day that you control, where you’re in charge. A time when you get to set an intention, think about your day, and decide what you want to happen, and what you want to create.

Mornings are also the time of the day when you have the most willpower, the most ability to make decisions that are more about what you want to be or become. We all have dreams, habits you want to make, changes in your lives you would like to see. A morning routine creates the space to let you do that. Set an intention, think about that intention, and then really visualize how that intention will come about. Yes, if you believe in morning routines, they can be a great way not only to start your day but a strong investment in yourself. So how do you start a morning routine, or how do you make the one you have even stronger?

How to Create a Morning Ritual that Works Best for You Get Clear – first, you need to think about how you want your


morning routine to be like, and what you want it to manifest. Get clear on your intention. My morning routine consists of visualization, reviews of my goals, setting my priorities for my day, and what new habit I am working on. Whatever it is, just be clear on what you want to create with your morning routine. Make the Time – yes that may mean you have to get up earlier, reorganize your morning, or whatever it takes. For a morning routine to have an impact, you need to do it consistently, and you need to commit the time. Meditate – think about including some meditation. Now before you resist, meditation does not have to be a lot, even five or ten minutes will work. Just some time for your mind to quiet, and you to get in touch with your emotions, feelings, and to listen to your gut. Rinse and Repeat – every sixty-days or so assess your morning routine, what is working for you, what is not, and what if anything you would like to add or change. Every few months, I add a new goal, or a new exercise, just something to keep it fresh. A morning routine is a great way to start your day, and a powerful way to ensure you’re productive, efficient, and happier with your life. Leadership is key to almost any business success and as technology continues to impact the way we work it will impact the way we lead. In 2017, Amazon had 45,000 robots, and the company now has over 100,000 robots working in their fulfillment center. The firm claims that it will not replace humans because they lack “common sense and the dexterity” but with the increase of robotic systems in the workplace this will indeed birth a new category of leadership. Although we don’t know what kind it will be, robots are certainly a part of our future especially as technology continues to advance. No one knows what the future holds but there are ways we can ensure that employees continue to evolve with technology. Here are 4 ways that employers can better integrate humans and robots in the same workplace:


Engagement: A true leader knows how to successfully combine a human with a robot workforce. In some companies the leaders even let the employees pick or vote for what kind of technology/robots the company should invest in. Less resilience and higher motivation is the outcome. Involve your staff and let them buy into this new genre of leadership alongside other decision-makers at the company. Upgrade: We should make sure no one is left behind, in this age of digitization a great leader must make sure employees are skilled, educated, and motivated to use and work with and for technology. Creativity and inspiration: The skills we need in the future are social skills, decision making, innovation, and creativity. Any future proof leader will make sure its workforce is ready and trained in those skills.

Copyright: Loretta Martinez-Acosta When a 20 -year-old Mike McGovern, now a 37+ year veteran and Chief Driving Instructor at Bondurant High-Performance Driving School, started putting feelers out for a summer job, he never realized how much it would shape his life. And he certainly didn’t know the shape would be an oval that measured a quarter-mile.

their classes, and learned everything he could. “I earned my chops as an instructor, and I taught law enforcement and performance classes. It was a dream job, and I loved it.” It was his beloved position as an instructor that led him to love of another kind.

LAP 1: Just a kid lookin’ for a job A friend told McGovern about a guy who was looking for someone to help him take care of his car. Young McGovern, already a muscle car enthusiast, applied Mike McGovern for the job. I showed up and interviewed with a guy named Bob Bondurant,” said McGovern. “I had no idea who he was or why it was a big deal to work for him.” McGovern got the job and started running errands for Bondurant and doing miscellaneous work around the shop. A few weeks into his new job, an instructor took him on a hot lap around the track. It was at that moment that McGovern was all-in when it came to the track. “I was hooked after that,” said McGovern. “I was just so taken with it all.” So taken, in fact, that he almost risked his employment the third week in, when he decided to take his Camaro out on the track with no warning, permission, or authorization. “I thought I was going to lose my job,” said McGovern. “Fortunately, they took mercy on me and let me hang around. And, after about six months, Bob let me go through the school.”

LAP 2: From behind the wheel to head of the class With proper training under his belt, McGovern now had the all-clear to drive the track as much as he wanted. Anyways, he did just that, getting behind the wheel as much as he could and earning the seat time it takes to become a good driver. “They must have seen something in me because, after a while, I was asked to be an instructor.” McGovern jumped at the chance, started hanging around the other instructors, went to

LAP 3: Love of the track turns into the love of his life Fast forward a few years when Marcia, also an employee of the school, took the driver’s course in another instructor’s class. Marcia had a little trouble, and, as fate would have it, ended up training with Mike. “We hung out all day that day, started dating and spending most of our time together.” Two years later, Mike and Marcia were married at the Bondurant School in a wedding suitable for the bride and groom. The school’s cars were on display, and the bride and groom drove around the track in Bondurant style before walking down the aisle. Marcia and her parents were driven into the arena by none other than Bob Bondurant himself. Not long after their nuptials, McGovern was asked to be the Chief Instructor at Bondurant. Naturally, the answer to that question was also “I will.”

LAP 4: Practice goes pro Just as life hit a rhythm, things changed again. John Lee, a car dealer in


According to McGovern, one of the highest compliments is the number of kids and grandkids who come to the training school because their parents and grandparents have gone. “The training we give people on the front side of their driving career is valuable for their whole life. I believe it has saved thousands of people’s lives.” “I’ve been lucky enough to coach some truly amazing individuals.” And a lot of celebrities too. McGovern has trained the likes of Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Kurt and Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Tim Allen, Nicolas Cage, and most recently, Kevin Hart.

North Carolina, invited McGovern to go to North Carolina to race cars for real. “I jumped at the chance and had a blast doing it. I even had some success. And man, it was fun!”

The fun was short-lived, though. The economy took a turn, and racing slowed down. The McGoverns, however, only needed to make a call back home to Bondurant – now relocated to Arizona. There, McGovern rejoined the Bondurant team, again as the Chief Instructor. His race career, however, was not over. A few years later, McGovern met Jim Click, a student at the school. Jim invited McGovern to race his private collection of cars all around the country. And this time, McGovern didn’t have to leave his job to do it. “I took Jim’s private plane back and forth to races on weekends. I had the time of my life. I raced premium sports cars and vintage cars, Cobras, Mustangs, Trans Ams. You name it. I drove amazing cars on tracks all over the country.” I’m extremely fortunate. I’ve never paid for racing. And I have been given the best opportunities.”

LAP 5: The race continues, and a few celebrities show up for the ride Now, McGovern is more passionate about his career and more filled with gratitude than ever. “What I’m most proud of is the Teen Driving Defense course. The kids always leave telling us how much they’ve learned and let us know what a great time they’ve had.”

The Secret How To Let Go Of What Does Not Serve You

But stop and think about that for a second: How busy are you already? How full is your calendar today? How close to overwhelm are you right now? Our energy is balance. Before you expand what, you want to achieve in the next decade, it’s important to first clear out what you want to release from the 2010s. What I know for sure are the things we leave behind to allow us to bring in so much more — more than anything we ever thought was possible. And that’s what I want for you in 2020. Want more from the next decade? Let’s clear some room.

The Secret to Letting Go of What Does Not Serve You If you’ve ever taken a yoga class, listened to a guided meditation, or read a wellness book, you’ve probably heard this phrase before: Let go of what does not serve you.

But what does that mean, and how do you do it? Well, part of the problem is we were never taught how to let go of something, and it will look different for everyone. But for me, letting go is all about forgiveness. You can’t let go of something until you’ve forgiven it. You can resolve to limit your social media time to 15 minutes daily, or you decide to take a hiatus. Except, whenever you find yourself in a weak moment, you’re back on social media — soaking up the glow from other people’s lives and using it to shadow your own. Maybe you even stick to your social media diet, but you still notice that feeling creeping into your life … when you go to networking events or holiday parties, for example. The root of the problem isn’t social media, though that habit may exacerbate the problem. The real problem is you haven’t forgiven yourself for not being where you want to be. If you’re noticing an emotion, habit, relationship, or thought pattern that doesn’t serve you, don’t just treat the symptoms. Figure out what needs to be forgiven, so you can release that problem from the root.

That’s how you say bye to that which does not serve you — and truly create new space and expansion to call in something greater.

How I Learned to Let Go of What Wasn’t Serving Me There was a time when I was struggling. I was in a constant space of hurt and anger. I was reactive instead of responsive, and I was losing my mind over stupid stuff way too often. I was holding onto so much hurt, and I refused to let myself heal because I didn’t want to give others the satisfaction of my forgiveness. Yet all I was doing was tying myself to the misery that had nothing to do with them and everything to do with me. I was scared of what would happen if I forgave myself. When I finally realized how deeply I needed self-forgiveness, I made a decision and consciously chose it. And I had to keep choosing it with every thought pattern, journal entry, and daily instinct to “just keep pushing.” But you know what? It was so

incredibly powerful. Forgiveness was the most powerful gift I’ve ever given myself. The more I practiced it, the more it unleashed this force of inner creativity, inspiration, and power. By choosing


forgiveness, nurturing it within me, and taking actions that supported my choice, I had released a lifetime of hurt. In its place came a transformation of inner power. I had stepped into the best version of myself by first forgiving what I was not. When you’re no longer being hurt by the things that happened to you in the past, it unleashes an unstoppable force within you. You can’t help but get caught up in that momentum. However, this year, let’s forgive ourselves into the next of greatness.

How to Let Go of What Does Not Serve You In order to manifest the biggest, most impactful decade of your life, you’ll want to get clear about what you need to forgive — like a clarity roadmap for the year ahead. It’s time to dig deep. If I’ve learned anything on my personal journey, clarity requires a lot of introspection and hard questions. So that’s why I’m challenging you to ask yourself the following three questions before you walk into the next decade.

1.

What do I need to forgive myself for?

There might be a lot of bullets on this list — and that’s ok. Try not to judge yourself through this process. Write down every negative thought patterns, emotions, relationships, mistakes, and perceived weaknesses. What stories need to be put to bed? What limiting beliefs are holding you back from your highest good and calling? What no longer serves you? The idea is to let it go, from your heart to the pen, and your pen to the page. Let the page carry that load from now on. Let it hold space for all the blame and hurt you once thought was your burden. And love yourself enough to forgive yourself.

and we choose to become unstoppable in our ability to move forward. It’s a choice, one I wish I had taken less time to arrive at. To love yourself enough to let go of what has hurt you. Embrace the possibilities of what’s to come with a sense of exuberance and excitement. Let go of 2019 and be unstoppable in 2020. Because today, that’s all that matters. Share with Us! What do I need to forgive others for?

Again, practice honesty and refrain from judging with this one. Write a list of others’ actions, words, or emotions that may have caused you harm. Who are you harboring ill will toward and holding grudges against? Who has burned bridges with you? Which old relationships still haunt you? While the first step is awareness, you’ll likely need to find a new way to look at each hurtful interaction, so you can find a sense of compassion and, eventually, forgiveness. Try reframing the situation or think about what it would be like to walk that person’s journey. And love them enough to forgive them.

3.

What would that open up space for?

Now I want you to look through those lists and consider how you would feel if you were no longer putting energy into those things. How much do you think those lists weigh, either energetically or on your time? How much time and energy would be opened up if you let them go? How could you use all that space? List all the things you could feel, do, or accomplish if you let go of what doesn’t serve you — not just next year but in the next decade. Now you have the space for it.

You can see your life’s purpose like a car, it can bring you to the right place of all 3 circles (fig 2). The 3 circles are your life’s activities – the way you live out your life’s purpose and the way you take action. When you know your life’s purpose, it is much easier to say yes or no to a job, choose the best way for you to work, or to obtain the correct education. It’s important that when you choose your life partner and your close friends that you stay true to your life’s purpose. You will then receive a lot of energy from these relationships. You choose your life partner and

together you choose how to influence your children. The personal circle is often the most difficult. It’s very important that you spend energy to fulfill your life’s purpose in that circle or you will not be your best self in the other circles. As

God spoke to us in the bible telling us to love God first, before we can love ourselves and others. It was tough for me to grasp as I did not understand how that works. I thought that by loving others first, I would eventually grow into loving myself; I found out I was wrong. Self-love is a journey that we go through with God. It takes dedication, devotion, practice, realization, growth, discovery, and much more. And it all starts with God. “Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life with him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” (1 John 4:7-13). I realized that our greatest life lesson is learning how to fully realize, accept, and love God. It will happen when we understand who we are in him. For God so loved the world that he GAVE his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16) But to all who believe in him, and accept him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or pain, but a birth that comes from God. (John 1:12-13). Once we know and love God, he shows us our value to him. Out of a heart full of gratefulness, we give our love to others without becoming resentful and depleted. As A child growing up into adulthood, I was a victim of all kinds of abuse; neglect, starved, physical, mental, verbal, and emotional by my mother, sister, stepmom, and classmates from school. However, God was always at my side assuring me that he was there and loved me when no one else did. At age 19, I left home to get away from the cycle of abuse. I had no self-esteem, no one thought I was worthy of love, so how could I love myself? I started my spiritual journey in the wrong place. I wanted to find a man who would love me for who I am, I dated many different men to find love and went to many different varieties of churches to help me find the love I longed for. I wanted human love and affirmation so badly that I believed God show me a vision of a figure of a man whom I would marry in the future. I finally met the man whom God had shown me in the vision, and I asked God, what about love? I am not in love with him, but this is the man you showed me in the vision. God seemed to be telling me that love will come later. I later had three kids and my love grew for my kids and others however my love for my husband was still not there. I asked God again, “I worked on myself with self-help spiritual books, and still could not figure out how to love him. I still didn’t know how to love God or

myself. Yet God seemed to say, “Don’t worry, love will come later.” I continued to go to various churches, read self-help and spiritual books, practiced words of affirmation, think about selflove, did acts of service, took action on selflove, accepting to receive gifts to absorb self-love, I spent quality time with myself, I went to workshops, seminars and more… to help myself to love him and myself, that elusive love still did not come.. I knew something needed to change, when all my kids grew up and moved out on their own, I sat down with my husband informing him of my goals. I expressed to him that I decided to pursue my dreams teaching the Law of Attraction to the Deaf community and to become an author and speaker, he replied: “what about me?” Since I still did not understand how God fit into the equation, I was unable to explain my heart to him. All I could tell him that he is an adult, like me, and I cannot make him happy, but he can only make himself happy. My husband did not like seeing me happy doing things I liked to do and started to become verbally, emotionally, and mentally abusive towards me. I became more and more depressed as he continued his ways by not feeding or watering me (spiritually). I was slowly dying. I had a heart attack from all the stress, my hormones were out of whack, I was getting sick often with fibromyalgia flare-ups, shingles flare-ups, lack of sleep, overworking, and other illness appearing. I asked God again when would love for my husband come? This time God seemed to say, “the grass is greener on the other side.” I asked, “how can I survive on my own, plus I can’t leave him because he loves me.” God seemed to say, “When there is fear, there is no love.” Shortly thereafter, my husband raised his hand as if to strike me, I ducked like I


did as a child, at that moment I realized I had married my mom! There was something wrong with me because I was in fear like I had as a child. There was no love there. I decided to divorce him and he wanted to hold on to me. Then one day he texted me and asked if there any chance for us to get back together again, I said, “No. Living with you, I was slowly killing me. I was under so much stress that my health was tanking. I was not happy. I had a choice to be happy or die, I am now choosing to live and to be happy.” During the divorce, my kids were mad at me. Their father had convinced them that I was the bad person and didn’t love them. During this time, I really learned to trust and lean on God. I learned that to love God meant that I should love myself. He gave his life to pay the penalty for my sins. If he loved me that much, how could I not love him? I trusted in God and asked him to help us all get through this without more drama. I did not want to date or have any relationships after the divorce since God had showed me that I was attracting the same type of people that my mom and husband had been. If I continued dating these people, the cycle of being a “victim of abuse” would continue. I decided to let go, trust God, work on my self-improvement, and let him lead me where he wanted me to go, be it to a man who would love me, or if I would have to be single, he knew what was best for me. Then it happened, I met the man who would become my soulmate! I found out we both had issues from the past that we were dealing with, and we enjoyed going to workshops and seminars to learn how to break the cycles of thinking that keep us trapped in negative behaviors. At one of the workshops, we were challenged to give dating a chance. We both hesitated, but then decided to give it a try with the understanding that we did not want to have a relationship at that time. I however, had a question for him that had been bothering me a lot. I asked him, “How would you feel if we began dating and you saw me talking to another guy? Would you become jealous, or accuse me of cheating on you?” He said, “Of course not! If we were dating, I would be putting my trust in God and in you.” At the moment, I felt relieved from my “eggshell prison” that I was in. I felt free to date him, knowing that we trusted each other on the same level.

Once I realized it, I thanked God for him and my love for God was real and found myself loving myself more, my love for everyone increased… It was an amazing love that I never knew. The love became a complete circle as it was written in the bible. 1. Love God 2. Love yourself 3. Love thy neighbor as yourself 4. Back to loving God. (The complete circle of Love) The answer how to love yourself, is in God alone. He will lead you to the things you like/love and enjoy doing, He will lead you to the desire of your heart, if your heart is in tune with him. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, do not depend on your own understanding. It never feels good, but does it really have to bother us so much? Here’s how to not sleep over it: Accept that it hurts (a little). Denying that something bothers us only extends its impact. I had a mini-vent to my very level-headed husband, who said, “Who cares? I wouldn’t go to Connecticut for a party anyway. It’s a free pass!”

A text from my friend Laura popped up on my screen: “Are you going to Andrew’s party?” I thought, Yes! Probably. Then I returned to my conversation with my dinner date, Ava. As Ava and I were wrapping up, she asked, “Will I see you at Andrew’s party?” and I answered confidently, “Sure thing!” But as we parted ways, I checked my inbox for the Paperless Post invite. Nothing. A Facebook invite, then? I scrolled through my notifications—nope. Hmmm. Could I have been… left out? It sunk in. Yep, that was it.

Ouch. I thought about it for the rest of the evening and the following day. I considered texting Andrew to ask what was up, but my pride wouldn’t let me. It stung, but this happens to all of us at one time or another: We get left out of a party, project, heck—even a group text chain.

His response landed with me because it was actually true. I probably wouldn’t have really wanted to go anyway or make an excuse as to why I couldn’t. Yes, I was miffed, but in truth — the sting diminished when I actually thought about it. Does being left out of something make you (irrationally) think you want it more than you actually do? Rejection isn’t even always real. One year, I had an intimate birthday dinner and the restaurant’s largest table could only seat 10. So, I chose 10 people who all liked and knew one another. I thought I can see and celebrate with other people separately! A couple of Insta snaps later, I had a couple of snarky texts from friends who weren’t present. Being the “rejector” in this instance, I felt bad but also saw most “rejection” for what it is: Nothing! It’s almost always not intentional or malicious. Life just has a lotta moving parts, and we make many onthe-spot, not-at-all-deep decisions. It’s not always a big deal.


Consider: Are you overreacting? In many cases, our emotions are not rational. I once had a coworker, Daniel, who obsessed over the safety of his job when he was left out of a particular project at work. He kept asking me, “Does the boss have it in for me or what? My clients are involved in this. Why aren’t I in the meetings?” I didn’t have the answer, but my gut told me my colleague was being a little OTT with his response and I shared that with him. Soon after, the boss invited Daniel to step in and help manage the project. He explained that he was concerned that Daniel had too much on his plate so he’d been trying to shield him from the new endeavor for as long as he could. The boss was actually protecting Daniel because he cared for him as an important team member who was simply stretched too thin. What a sigh of relief — and a mini eye-roll at the old ego, right?

here? Once you’re rejected, it’s easy to stay mad at the person who hurt you. But after you accept that being left out doesn’t feel good and assess your reaction, think, does this experience teach me anything? Do you need to speak up more, question assumptions, ask for what you want, even find some new friends if the same people don’t make you feel valued (more than once)? Painful parts of our lives can become gorgeous detours in a new direction—if we let them.
