ith India being the fastest growing IT markets in the world, the PC market in India has always been ahead of the other markets in the Asia-Pacific region. This has meant that the Indian IT hardware market has remained buoyant has been one of the major factors leading to the overall IT boom in India. With growing penetration and awareness levels, the market has shown an upward swing across all verticals In the early period, the growing computerization of all the governmental projects and various net services offered in the varied programmes across be it e-governance, healthcare, and financial sectors had favoured the IT hardware market in India. These factors are still a significant contributor in the market growth. As there is growing requirement of IT in all the public sector companies and financial sectors, the market is still considered to have a stable growth. The key contributors for the hardware market are expected to be government, media, financial and healthcare sectors.
The IT hardware market has witnessed a range of changes since its inception. The market began with the desktops and then moved to lapops and mobile computing. All these changes have contributed in making a significant onus on the IT growth. This is one of the reasons that the IT hardware market has grown but the market size is still small when compared to China and Japan in the Asia-Pacific region. This opens up the scope for growth with further PC penetration across the markets where IT is yet to open its reach. According to IDC report 2013, overall PC shipments for calendar year 2012 stood at 11 million units resulting in a year-on-year growth of 3.5 percent over 2011, according to IDC. Despite a drag on overall IT spending, the growth in the India PC market was driven by special projects like ELCOT and a spurt in consumer demand for notebooks. The consumer PC market recorded an impressive growth driven by growing shift in end-user demand towards notebooks, which grew at a striking 20.2 percent in 2012 over FY2011. “In the face of ongoing
10
challenges from a slowing economy and high inflation, the rise in consumer optimism is a welcome sign for the India PC market, said Kiran Kumar, Research Manager, IDC. This is reflected in the improved retail footfalls, particularly among large format retailers (LFRs), which continue to act as a catalyst in driving consumer demand, the report elucidated. The Indian IT industry has shown phenomenal growth over the last decade. According to Economy Watch, from the span of 1992-2001 the compounded annual growth rate of the Indian IT services industry has been over 50 percent. As per the Department of Information technology, currently, there are 1.1 million professionals in the field of hardware but the count of professionals and computer experts will rise to 5.6 million until the year 2020. Apart from this, the manpower within IT sector is expected to reach up to the mark of 75 lakh by year 2020. Also, the government plans to spend approximately USD 9 billion in e-governance, including the 27 mission-mode projects.

Mait requested the newly formed Indian government to look into the Compulsory Registration order, which makes 15 electronic products including video games, laptops and microwave ovens subject to safety standards, and highlighted the issue of delays in approvals by state pollution boards for manufacturing electronic products. According to Mait, the new Government should look at increasing PC penetration in Indian households by enabling infrastructure, providing low-cost loans and discount vouchers for purchasing PCs. The IT hardware industry finds it difficult to compete with exchange-rate variations, Mait said, adding that the government should consider amending adoption of exchange rate variation clause for all IT hardware product purchase contracts, regardless of delivery period under the General Finance Rules (GFR) 2005. "Implementation woes in Compulsory Registration order, delays in granting of EPR PR (extended producer responsibility) authorisations by state pollution boards, no fixed process for registrations and unclear deadlines badly impact the industry," Mait said. The IT industry has always been a trendsetter in terms of quality and safety. The government should jointly work with the industry on self-regulation, the body added. An inverted duty structure makes domestically manufactured goods uncompetitive. The government should all components used by IT manufacturers from special additional duty, it said. The major challenge is that the market has shifted towards high mobility devices (i.e., smartphones and tablets). Ultra-portable internet devices including ultra-mobile PCs (UMPC), mobile internet devices (MID) and ultra-mobile devices (UMDs)
Worldwide shipments of traditional PCs are forecast to total 278 million units in 2014, a seven percent decline from 2013. Driven by an uptake in Windows ultramobiles, the PC market is estimated to remain flat in 2014 (0.2 percent), after a decline of 9.9 percent in 2013. The Gartner consumer survey showed that less than eight per cent of users would replace their laptop with a tablet, while a transfer to an Ultrabook is almost twice this figure. have been witnessing growing market penetration over the past few years. They have reduced form factors and allow the user to easily access content and information. In addition, they also provide services including e-mail, data sharing, gaming along with traditional voice and messaging services. With the growing trend of mobility, an increasing number of end users have been shifting from using conventional PCs and associated devices. Availability of low priced options in mobile phones and tablets have coupled with the demand for devices that offer computing, entertainment and communications is expected to aid in increasing market penetration of these products. In 2014, the worldwide tablet market is forecast to grow 47 percent with lower average selling prices attracting new users.
12
Consumers continue to buy tablets as an additional device that they carry everywhere. According to a recent consumer study that Gartner conducted in the third quarter of 2013 across Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, the U.K., the U.S. and Japan, over two-thirds of tablets were used outside the home for activities such as vacation or concert. This is a similar pattern to that of smartphones as smaller form factors are driving more portability outside the home. In the latter half of 2014, the market is expected to witness an upswing riding on government-led procurement. The year will also see a PC refresh cycle driven by the end of support for Windows XP coupled with the release of Windows 8.1. This is likely to translate into accelerated growth for the SMB, corporate and commercial sectors. We expect the infrastructure vertical to take off in the new year, and we look forward to a definitive policy framework and transparency from the government. In the shifting landscape of increasingly multi-function devices the Indian IT industry has tremendous opportunity. Innovating to deliver compelling new form factors that further embed the use of technology in consumers’ lives will be critical. Tomorrow’s winners will be those companies that identify inherent consumer needs and create innovative devices through technological excellence. Hence, IT consumption is expected to get a significant thrust. The future of IT hardware industry looks highly promising, with cloud computing soaring high in the market. Apart from this, Big Data is going to be the next frontier for innovation, competition and productivity. There has been notable shift towards network and server management and on-site maintenance to remote infrastructure management. The growth of IT industry in India is in the domestic market. While exports dominate the IT industry at present, there is an enormous scope of growth in the domestic

INTERVIEW

BlackBerry forging stronger connect with Partners Infofriend spoke with Mr. Hitesh Shah, Director, Channel Sales, BlackBerry, India on their channel direction and distribution plans in India. This financial year, what is the primary focus of BlackBerry in India? From a channel perspective, the biggest focus for us is ensuring profitable growth for us as well as our partners. We are going to ensure that we retain the confidence of all our retail partners and make sure that there is greater transparency between the partners and us. We would strive towards ensuring that BlackBerry is the most trusted brand for the partners to work with. As a leading mobile player in the smartphone segment, how would you evaluate the market at present? If you look at from year on year perspective, the market from a smartphone perspective has been growing at 157%. This is the most exciting phase for smartphone market in India. In the coming year, we are going to be looking for aggressive growth percentage bearing in mind that all the other players in the mobile segment are moving away from feature phones to smartphones which are affordable. This shift in consumers interest towards smartphones will also make the market very competitive which is good for the growth of the segment. What are the key verticals being targeted by BlackBerry? From the retail perspective, one of the most important verticals is the trusted partner as they are fundamentally who we will be working with. From a retail as well as business perspective, our bigger focus is on general trade. It is one of the most important areas of the market today which contributes to the major portion of the market. LFRs are also critical partners because the sheer code of conduct with which they work is commendable and are registering amazing growth. The retail partners be it Reliance, TMS, Cromas or south LFR partners are all growing at much faster pace and they have exponential plans for
Mr. Hitesh Shah, Director, Channel Sales, BlackBerry, India
growth. The third key vertical is etail. The etail is still growing. It has been a controversial subject till date. The etail market is still in nascent stage. But isn’t the retailer worried about the growing reach of etail? Definitely, they are feeling the heat. The LFRs are going to find it difficult because for them the cost of operations is greater. Now the online sites are trying to change the buying behaviour of the customers. More of the investment they are doing right now is to ensure that they change the
buying behaviour of the customers from buying it offline to buying it online. At the end of the day the buying pattern is yet to change. The general end-user is not tech savy. The customer is likely to want the touch, feel of the product and opinion on the product before making the choice. So they do end up at the retailer. But the end customer is also likely to opt for etail after checking out the product at retail? That is definitely there. They might use the price quoted by the sites as a bargaining tool to the retailer. The retailer will then have to offer value added services in terms of accessories. The market has not completely shifted but there is definitely a pinch for the retailer. The retailer will have to sell his value added services to the customer. The retailer will need to make the end consumer aware that the advantage of etail is only the price. But the retailer will assure him accessories, service needs and the biggest advantage of always being there for the customer in case of any query or grievance. We would like to mention that Blackberry does not offer price difference in retail and etail. We do not want the brand to be diluted because of the price advantage. Retailers are investing their own money and our relationship with our retailers is very important. We don’t want the retailer to feel threatened that he will loose money. The customer is also not loosing out. If he goes to the retailer, he is being offered value added services. We want to ensure stronger relationship with our partners. What are the key strengths of BlackBerry smartphones? The technology we offer is the biggest differentiator. When we take the BlackBerry messenger, it is a good platform. It gives real time updation to the user experience which makes a lot of difference from the end customer perspective.

INTERVIEW The other key strength has always been enterprise security. E-mail has become synonymous with BlackBerry. The push Technology offered by BlackBerry has no comparision to the others. Another key advantage and which many are unfortunately not aware of is QNX, which is the world’s fastest platform. That’s what differentiates us from technology perspective because QNX as a platform was used in mission critical applications including NASA operations, military and medical fields. QNX is a great differentiator when it comes to not only performance and responsiveness but also the most basic facet of security. It is not something that can be hacked into, you don’t have to worry about the vulnerability of the device. Today as the platform gives the customer the power to control each and every application on what data can be shared giving the users security. What are the strong distribution channels for BlackBerry?
As I mentioned earlier, there are three partners – General trade which is our biggest contributor, LFR which is growing segment and etail which is developing right now. Which is the most eagerly product set to arrive this year from BlackBerry? The Z10 is a much awaited launch . Our policy is that we do not discuss portfolio launch. In the next six months, we have an array of new products from BlackBerry. This year is going to have an exciting range. How has the BlackBerry exclusive and premium stores helped broaden the market reach for BlackBerry in India? Our focus is not about gathering the reach or adding the width of distribution. The focus in not on the business per se but on giving the differentiated experience to the BlackBerry loyalist who wants the best technological experience. We put in investments to aid this experience for our customers, We hope to achieve a stronger connect with our end customers.
16
Are any schemes or promotional events in the offing for the channel partners? We have been running promos as part of BlackBerry 10 years celebrations. It was a huge success and garnered great response from our customers. We are running our usual promos on all our products. Another programme is for BlackBerry loyal customers thanking them for their loyalty. When the customer decides to upgrade to the next device, we offer them a good value proposition. It is the least of the things that we could do for them. Another campaign is the Be on BlackBerry campaign. The campaign reaches out to the consumer who is a diehard BlackBerry Fan and will advocate that BlackBerry is the right choice of the user who sets the tone rather than sheepishly follows a flock. What is BlackBerry’s message to channel partners? We want to tell our partners to keep the trust in us and we will ensure profitability.
