To achieve this market share, the company has enhanced its sales and marketing initiatives at Tier 2 regions comprising mainly Class C and D cities. It feels the DIY markets in these regions are yet to be effectively tapped by PC component ven-
dors in spite of the growth of demand, and of tech-savvy end- users therein. Gigabyte motherboards, with its innovative features and power-saving technologies, have a lot to offer users in such cities, who are increasingly demanding PC systems with improved performance and high durability. COVERSTORY
T
he Indian motherboard market was around 3.2-2.5 million units according to IDC in 2011 and the increasing decline in the PC market and upsurge of the smartphone shipements is expected to spill its affect on the declining motherboard market. The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India totalled nearly 1.96 million units in the fourth quarter of 2013, a 19.9 per cent decrease over the fourth quarter of 2012, according to Gartner, Inc. “Consumers accounted for 49 percent of total PC sales in the fourth quarter of 2013,” said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst at Gartner.” In the absence of any government orders this quarter, the Indian PC market performed dismally, re-emphasizing the fact that with current economic sentiments and the current political scenario, enterprises are deferring their purchases.” White boxes (including parallel imports), which accounted for 44 percent of the
overall desktop market, declined 10 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013 compared to the same period last year. In the fourth quarter, mobile PCs registered a 27 percent year on year increase. Even with the desktop market taking a hit, the motherboard vendors are continuously innovating and trying to keep up with the declining market. But the question remains for how long and the implications it will have on the changing market scenario. The end-customers in the bigger cities are into smartphone adoption and choosing the mobility option of the laptops over the traditional desktops. So the market area has shifted from the cities to the smaller towns where the market for the PC is still strong. The key vendors in the Indian motherboard market are Asus, AsRock, Digilite, Gigabyte, Mercury, MSI and Intel. Gigabyte almost overtook ASUS in terms of motherboard shipments in the first quarter of this year. Gigabyte shipped 4.9 million motherboard during the quarter,
12
only slightly behind Asus' 5 million units. The interior areas of small towns offer scope for the market to grow as the PC penetration is still low and the customers might still choose the traditional PC over the trendier mobile devices. Asus leads the market share in India with over 30% of market reach. Gigabyte is eyeing a market share of over 40% of the Indian Do It Yourself (DIY) PC motherboard in 2014. Recently Intel announced that it will begin exiting the desktop motherboard business after nearly 20 years of selling branded desktop motherboards. Intel is expected to retreat from desktop motherboards as soon as its next-generation Haswell CPU ships, and plans to dissolve its Desktop Motherboard Business unit over the next two years. Intel's decision is sparked by the various changes in the PC market. The major factor being that the desktop motherboards are increasingly becoming redundant in the changing IT landscape with the

COVERSTORY number coming down sharply. The market is shifting towards the mobile segment. Smartphones, laptops and tablets have become the order of the day. Intel expects to change with the changing market scenario and adapt with the market needs. Intel plans to shift its focus from desktop motherboards to boards for emerging form factors, such as the company’s recently released NUC (Next Unit of Computing), a tiny, 4-by-4-inch, self-contained PC. Intel will also focus on improving Ultrabook and all-in-one systems designs. Manufacturers will be able to license entire designs, or just parts of Intel designs to integrate into their own products. This type of integration can already be be found in Gigabyte’s recently launched Thin ITX motherboard for white-box and DIY all-inone PCs. In addition to pursuing emerging form factors, Intel will also ramp up efforts to expand its Form Factor Reference Design (FFRD) work, assisting OEM partners in developing new board designs for desktop PCs. The PC market has suffered its biggest decline on record, with first quarter shipments dropping 14% since the same time last year. This unprecedented decline casts a very ominous light on the PC industry, which had hoped that Windows 8 would bolster sales — but instead, Microsoft’s new OS is a major factor in the most precipitous decline in history. These figures come from IDC, which has been tracking PC shipments since 1994. Shipments (not sales, which were probably lower) of PCs in the first quarter of 2013 totaled 76.3 million, down 13.9% from the first quarter of 2012. Gartner, which has a slightly different definition of “PC,” pegged the decline at 11%. Among the individual PC makers, every OEM except Lenovo experienced a decline in shipments. HP’s PC department, which has been flagging for some time, experienced a huge drop of 24% compared to the same time last year. The PC market has been steadily declining over the last few years, but a slump of 13.9% was really quite unexpected. IDC, which is usually fairly accurate, had predicted a huge drop of 7.7%, which would’ve also been one of the largest declines in history — and yet, somehow, it the actual damage was almost twice that. If this decline continues, the PC market will be all but dead in the next few years. To get a better understanding of the changing

Superlative performance in motherboard segment
Mr. Vinay Shetty – Country Head – Component Business, ASUS (India). With the desktop market slowing down in recent times especially in the cities, how has the motherboard market shifted in recent times? While the assembled PC market is shrinking due to buyers preferring notebooks the exit of few local vendors from desktop manufacturing leaves greater share for assemblers to grab especially in the entry level segment. Also partners have room to specialize in HTPCs / Small Form Factor PCs, gaming desktops and work center PCs for high end professional users where buyers still prefer desktops over notebooks. On the desktop side, consumers are now ready to pay a premium for gaming PCs. AIOs are witnessing a large potential market as they are great space saving solutions without the clutter of cables which many users prefer. Mini-ITX form factor is also now seeing a viable market because of various thin client applications like PoS. We’ve seen a strong growth in graphics cards business and are expecting graphics cards attach ratio to double in the next two years. Within the desktop pie, there is also an increase in the midrange segment. At present, which is the chipset promising growth in the market? Volume wise H61 is still the dominant chipset in the market although H81 will be the next successor raking in the volumes. Apart from that, in the mid segment B85 which is targeted at small business and offers out-of-the-box solutions for better PC performance, manageability and security protection, and in the high end segment, the latest H87 and Z87 chipsets have good growth potential. The key gaming verticals showing growth are workstation and gaming. How are these segments driving your market growth? Gaming and workstation are fairly high end segments constituting about 3% of the total available market. However, ASUS has a very strong reputation for delivering superlative gaming hardware with our Republic of Gamers (ROG) series of products. For workstations,
we have WS series motherboards for workstations while the TUF series products with higher reliability and 5 year warranty also suit certain workstation applications. While these segments may not contribute much to numbers they have a significant contribution to overall bottom line and help to further enhance and strengthen the brand image. What is your approach towards ensuring energy efficiency in your motherboards? All Asus motherboards are EU Energyrelated Products (ErP) ready, which requires products to meet high efficiency standards with regards to energy consumption. This is in line with the Asus vision of creating environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient products through design and innovation that reduce the carbon footprint of products and thus mitigate ecological impact. We’ve also devised our unique EPU technology (energy processing unit) that is the world's first real-time PC power saving chip that ensures system-wide energy optimization by automatically detecting current PC loadings and intelligently moderating power consumption. It can directly reduce CPU wattage to an indicated level on demand and manually switch to Max Power Saving Mode for further energy savings, creating a more efficient PC.

01/MARCH/ 2014
COVERSTORY market scenario, one has to understand that the PC market has been eclipsed by the smartphone. Samsung itself sold in the region of 70 million smartphones in Q1 2013; almost as many as the entire PC market combined (76.3 million). All told, analysts expect over one billion smartphones and tablets to be sold in 2013; PCs, on the other hand, will be lucky if they shift 350 million. The droop in the PC market also caused a big drop in the semiconductor market, with Intel, AMD, and other PC-oriented chip makers all taking a hit. On the flip side, mobile chip suppliers such as Samsung, Qualcomm, and Broadcom, all experienced huge growth. Investments made in channels by AMD are certainly producing results. Nevertheless, according to most motherboard makers, things are still heavily skewed in favor of Intel, with the chip major having around 85 percent market share. Some players such as Mercury and Intel (naturally) do not offer AMD options. AMD led the world in the transition to multicore processors and 64-bit computing. AMD has certainly seen some momentum last year, and their strategy of increasing feet on the street has worked. This should transition to better numbers. Over the past few quarters, because of the wide range of CPU platforms which are in vogue, there are multiple chipset-based motherboards which are being positioned by both Intel and AMD. H87 and Z87 Chipsets are doing well in the market. In future we see two or three segments propping up the assembler market. The
gaming market is one of these, with thousands of gamers actively waiting for the launch of new motherboards and GPU models. The gamers are expected to account for between five to eight percent of our sales. For the workstation market vendors have introduced dedicated motherboard SKUs, with more PCI/PCIe slots and memory banks. One of the reasons for the better acceptance has been the drop in the prices of professional graphics cards on both the AMD ATI and Nvidia platforms, thus making it affordable for a system builder to build workstations. AMD is soon expected to bring out a x86-based processor codenamed "Berlin" and "Warsaw". While mini-ITX motherboards have been around for a long time, the new form factor—thin mini-ITX—is expected to be popular in future. This factor has been gaining popularity and support from the key vendors. Desktops are now transitioning to a more solution based role and being viewed as the central data storage / download device or the principal device with a plethora of gadgets creating the users’ tech ecosystem around it. Another feature of such motherboards is low-profile SO-DIMMs (seen in notebooks) instead of the standard-sized DIMMs. With IDC forecasting that 38 percent of the desktop market could be on AIO models, the thin mini-ITX is the form factor that motherboard makers will position for system builders. The importance of Green adoption has also factored itself into the IT market
16
space. So the motherboard vendors are increasingly introducing products with energy efficient features. The end-customers are looking for real energy management features and have greater awareness of the need for such products. However, different brands have different approaches for implementing energy efficiency inside a motherboard. Not only is gaming becoming an even more important purchasing influence of PC sales due to the offloading of more basic functionality to smart devices, there is going to be distinct growth in the most expensive discrete graphics products. The Indian game user has opened up and is the whole silverlining in the motherboard space. Almost all vendors are increasingly seeing the market for gaming PCs becoming a reality; from less than a couple of thousand units a month, the market size is known to have tripled. The IT spending in India is projected to a total of $71.3 billion in 2014, a 5.9 percent increase from the $67.4 billion that was forecasted for 2013, according to Gartner, Inc. The IT market in India is the thirdlargest among emerging economies and the fourth-largest among developing and mature Asia/Pacific countries. The low penetration of PC in C and D class cities and the growing market potential for gaming promise a stable run for the motherboard market. Now, with several players in the market the options for building servers have increased for system builders paving way for an effecient growth for the motherboard market in the changing times.
