The SMB Market Potential

he Indian IT market has witnessed a stable growth largely due to the buoyant and encouraging SMB market which has been a strong contributor to the increase in revenue and secure growth for the IT market. The changing dynamics in the SMB sector which have lead to increase in the BYOD concept; growing competition and the overall expansion of the various SMBs have paved way for the stronger adoption of the various IT offerings and the internet as a wholesome package for any SMB. The IT sector and the government sector have all realized the potential of this burgeoning segment and they have managed to bring in new policies and programs to further the growth in this sector. All the key IT vendors are looking up to this sector and are increasingly offering packages to lure the SMB segment. They have adopted special marketing strategies for the same. The SMB sector is one of the strongest segments promising growth dur-

ing these uncertain times. The increasing globalization trends have been one of the strongest impetus in further aiding the growth of the SMB segment. The Indian market is scattered with several SMBS who are exporting a wide range of products and services to the world wide market while assuring strong quality from the other competitors including China and Bangladesh. The Exports for the SMB in India has been growing with a CAGR of 12.5% over the last 10 years while total Imports have been growing with a CAGR of 16%. The study also reveals that a large number of MNCs are entering into the Indian Market and thereby offering a direct competition to the local players. The SMB sector is the pillar of the present day economy; it contributes significantly to the overall growth of a nation and offers enormous opportunities. The SMBs have emerged as a customer segment representing significant and a hugely untapped growth opportunity for IT OEMs. Industry body Nasscom reiterated this in its Perspectives 2020 report, stating that the total market for the IT industry is expected to grow 7.7% over the next decade, of which 80% growth is expected from the SMB customers. All the key vendors have in place a dynamic business strategy to pursue the significant growth opportunity in the Indian SMB segment for PCs. According to IDC estimates, the SMB PC spending in India was estimated to be Rs. 5,275 crore in 2009 and is expected to touch Rs. 5,515 crore in 2010. As per IDC, PC spends accounted for 30.74 per cent of the total spends on IT by SMBs in India in 2009, with the SMB IT spending estimated to be Rs. 17,160 crore. The different companies have recognised the significance of the SMB segment and understand the pulse of the Indian SMB

Indian SMB segment has immense potential and the companies are geared up to tap this segment with innovation based products, which is likely to yield positive growth for the overall growth of the vendors. India has a total base of 48.8 million small and medium businesses, making it one of the fastest growing SMB nation globally, said a report from Zinnov, an advisory firm. The Indian SMB space at present is largely dominated by micro scale businesses, contributing 95% of the SMB landscape, followed by small scale businesses contributing 4.8% and the rest 0.2% by medium scale businesses. Out of the 48.8 million SMBs around 55% are located in urban areas while the rest 45% constitutes to the rural regions. Over the last few years SMBs in India have gained strategic importance from corporations and government. The recently announced tax incentive for growing SMBs in the Union Budget is one such example, said the report. The SMB segment is showing greater promise across all the segments in IT. The SMB sector in India is growing at an exceptional rate and has the potential to be one of the primary drivers of the Indian economy. Today 1.5 million SMBs export their products or services outside India which is a sign of the sectorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rapid evolution. The sector is also one of the highest employement generators in the country. There is also a spurt of enterprenuers

It is increasingly becoming one of the major factors contributing to purchase decisions in these uncertain times. n the face of the global slowdown, the focus is now increasingly on optimum resource utilization. across the country branching out to the opening Indian retail market. This picture represents the true entrepreneurial spirit on the Indian business community. The report also highlighted that around 82% of all SMBs are situated in 10 states in India. These 10 states, also account for two-third of the mobile and internet subscribers in the country. As per the released report, the Indian SMB sector gives employment to approx. 81.16 million people in India which has increased at a CAGR of 5.29%, while the fixed investment has been consistently increasing over the years at 11.48%. The India SMB server market is presently experiencing a healthy growth rate of 12%. Small and medium businesses (SMBs, companies with fewer than 999 employees) play a significant role in driving the all-India server demand. The current India

SMB server market amounts to approximately $300M and is expected to grow to over $500M by 2017. The technology adoption across the different SMBs vary across the various companies. The smaller SMBs are wary of trying out the various IT solutions in the market and are hesitant to adopt the same. They generally go for the setting up of basic IT infrastructure and are looking for basic IT services and solutions. They utilize servers for basic tasks such as file/print sharing and email. The small SMBs do not have an IT staff in place to look into the IT needs. So the adoption of IT services is also at the basic level. On the other hand, larger SMBs are early technology adopters. They have their basic IT infrastructure in place and are moving or have already moved to a higher IT platform. Such organizations are looking to consolidate the IT solutions.They utilize servers for advanced line of business applications such as CRM, ERP and analytics. These businesses have gradually started adopting virtualization and cloud solutions which have become an integral part ot IT package in any enterprise setup. Relatively small India SMBs often do not have a formal IT team in place. Many of their IT purchases and decisions are adhoc in nature. This boost in the SMB sector is a great opening for the IT market. The channel partners have a great role to play in helping these enterprises make an intelligent decision. However, the role of channel partners, who act as the last mile in the distribution chain, has not experienced a decline. . The relationship between SMB customers and channel partners should not pertain to just pushing the box or solutions. These channel partners act as an important source of information SMBs â&#x20AC;&#x201C; right from pricing related information to offering suggestions on which solutions can be effective for their business interests. In fact, channel partners are aggressively looking at becoming solution providers for India SMBs rather than mere box pushers. There is a significant level of collaboration between channel partners and SMBs in the management of IT infrastructure and decision making. Today the SMB sector is looking for wireless solutions with the increasing surge of mobile products in the market. The partners need to be effectively trained to garner the market reach presented by the SMB segment.
