he manifold increase of internet penetration has also lead to the si multaneous rise of threat scenarios in the IT sector. Most of the sectors including Banking and Financial Services Industry (BFSI), SMBs, telecom market, government sectors have sensitive informational data which is vulnerable to the increased threat perception in the Indian IT infrastructure. Even the SMEs have realized the need for increased security as they have begun to invest in IT security. But when we look at the worldwide scenario, Indian IT market is still lagging behind in the adoption of security measures. With India becoming the leading outsourcing destination, the companies have become privy to the need for strong anti hacking strategy to secure sensitive information. IT security is a major cause of concern for Indian companies, with the menace of their network being hacked constantly looming. SMBs need to develop proper IT infrastructure and Indian companies need to realize the potential threat of data theft. For this they will have to raise their level of investment in effective IT security systems.
Evolving IT security market The Indian IT market is price sensitive and the need for IT security is no longer being undermined the enterprises but while looking for IT security they look for comprehensiveness of coverage and cost of the IT security implementation. They want coverage to be extended beyond the core network perimeter to areas like mobile endpoints and processes, and they want security-related costs to be reduced. A report by Frost & Sullivan reveals that nearly 80 percent of Indian business enterprises have reported data theft
through online hacking. The survey also indicates that as high as 90 percent of Indian companies have placed IT security as their priority investment domain and that the cost of computer crimes have reached a whopping USD 10 billion - India is ranked fifth in terms of ecommerce security breaches. Internationally, operating systems such as Linux and UNIX are considered to be effective when it comes to protecting the personal computer systems against possible threats of virus attacks. This is so because IT vulnerabilities are

Coverstory more common in commonly used operating systems. The IT security market in India is estimated to be around USD 218 million (2012), with an annual growth rate of 2030 percent. According to a report by Gartner in 2011, the market is expected to have a CAGR of 16.4 percent from 2011-2016. Major drivers of India’s IT security market are the rise in use of IT enabled services, improved internet penetration and awareness of (SMBs) on the importance of investing in IT security in order to prevent data theft. According to a survey report by security vendor Symantec, 67 percent of the SMBs in India consider data loss to be a major concern, and 60 percent view cyber crime as a potential business risk. The survey also revealed that SMBs believe that the installation of an IT security program that is more than a basic antivirus solution is an urgent requirement. Thus the survey clearly indicates that data security is the top priority for large enterprises and as well as for SMBs. There are several drivers for the IT security changes. Heading the list are technologies under rapid adoption in India, including cloud computing and virtualisation .Other influences shaping IT security strategy are the emergence of more sophisticated threats and attacks , user-led IT and mobility . In line with fast evolving trends, many organisations are assessing their IT security strategy frequently. The remarkable pace of cloud computing adoption and the growing trend of employees plugging their personal devices to the corporate network are posing serious challenges to traditionally secured networks. Organisations must evaluate their security posture in a timely manner, so that they can take immediate steps against new vulnerability points on the network, as well as secure new technologies that emerge. In that context, it is critical for them to revise their legacy security implementation and adopt solutions which can protect and control at the network, application and user levels. With cloud computing becoming mainstream and many CIOs actively looking at leveraging cloud as part of their corporate IT strategy, security in the cloud is one of the key issues to be addressed. As cloud technologies enable applications and data to be accessible from anywhere, it raises serious security concerns as the traditional security measures
IT security undergoes great change What changes have you witnessed in the security trends this year over the past in the ever changing IT landscape? The definition of IT security has undergone a substantial change with information being distributed and accessed from anywhere. Most of the businesses are moving to internet based applications for access to information and to reduce costs. This exposes the organizations to various kinds of online fraud with the most prominent being Identity Fraud. With hacking being an organized underground industry and not any more an activity of few nerds, organizations of all sizes are vulnerable to varied information security threats. Given the easy accessibility of malicious tool-kits and sophisticated means employed by attackers the threat landscape has become far more complex today than it ever was.
How have the Indian enterprises taken up to the adoption of cloud computing? Has the percentage of IT spending on cloud witnessed an increase? The CIOs are facing a huge problem in identifying the actual user who has accessed the application, since the employees are able to access the applications from anywhere. In such scenarios the only security layer that protects the data and applications is the user's password. It is widely acknowledged that the traditional password mechanism provides little or no protection against any determined hacker. Until this issue is addressed, moving to cloud applications will prove to be a huge risk to any organization, as the risk increases dramatically with SaaS applications that are protected only through user passwords.

technologies like BYOD becoming a part of IT strategy of all organizations. With heightened security needs companies are looking at newer security technologies beyond conventional security mechanisms like Anti-Virus. As users are accessing applications from different devices like their tablets, smartphones and personal laptops at home, lot of conventional security mechanisms will not be applicable.
What are the key security threats witnessed in 2012? In 2012 most of the high profile breaches are related to user authentication where hackers are able to break-in and get user’s credentials. Some of the notable ones are Linkedin, Yahoo and Nvidea. For example in early June 2012, group of hackers has posted 453,000 passwords of one of the Yahoo’s services users. This trend raises serious concerns about the way the hackers are able to exploit weak authentication mechanisms. It’s time that enterprises do a thorough review of the way their authentication and other key security technologies are implemented and take corrective actions to strengthen the same.

Changing security landscape of 2012 What changes have you witnessed in the security trends this year over the past in the ever changing IT landscape? The network security market in India has been vibrant. IT has become central in driving business processes that serve enterprises’ objectives of increasing productivity and profit. Specifically on IT consumerization, we are witnessing the rise of BYOD, or bring-your-own-device, among enterprises in the region. More and more employees are using their personal tablets and smartphones to access the corporate network and do their work from anywhere. IT consumerization represents an increasing risk to enterprises' information security. Organizations need to deploy appropriate solutions on their network to enforce policies and controls around what the client, data, and user can do or access.

security needs?Has cost effectiveness become important How have the Indian enterprises parameter for IT security? taken up to the adoption of cloud BYOD environments generally lack computing? Has the percentage of IT many of the traditional security controls spending on cloud witnessed an that organizations have relied on to seincrease?
Cloud computing is one of the fastest growing business segments in the IT industry. Fortinet has a strong track record in helping enterprises secure the cloud. We enable cloud hosting providers, cloud service providers, and enterprises to create secure cloud infrastructures and/or deliver cloud-based managed security services. Today, India does not have that many clouds or data centers. But, with Internet usage expected to double or triple following the 3G and broadband wireless auctions, the timing is right for data centers to roll out on-demand cloud solutions in India. Fortinet already has a partnership with Sify Technologies to provide Indian enterprises with secure bandwidth and clean connectivity .
BYOD also brings into focus the security features of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Do enterprises take these factors into consideration while evolving
cure their data, leaving gaps in their data and device protection strategy. The top three issues are bandwidth and productivity drains, data and device loss and increasing cyber attacks on mobile devices.
IT security strategy of any organization is a continuous feature. Are the enterprises abreast with the latest security challenges? What are the key security threats witnessed in 2012? IT attacks have increased in both number and severity as hackers have become more sophisticated and their motivations have shifted from gaining notoriety to generating profits through exploiting confidential private data. Today’s threat landscape contains complex, polymorphic and multi-vector threats whether delivered via spam from a compromised server in a bot network, downloaded by a seemingly harmless posting on Facebook.
that are based on network perimeter become obsolete. Wireless LANs are a relatively new technology which has only been around since 1999. With any new technology, standards are always improving, but in the beginning are unreliable and insecure. With the increasing popularity of wireless networks, the need to be adequately protected against threats becomes paramount. However, limited awareness about the risks of using unsecured or poorly secured wireless network devices, coupled with the wide-spread availability of affordable wireless networking equipment has exposed users to potential misuse of these unsecured wireless networks. There is an imperative need to secure wireless networks today, not only to protect one's personal or businesses information, but also in light of the recent wireless network security breaches by unauthorised individuals. Media coverage of the exploits evoked considerable public interest and served as a wake-up call to individuals and businesses across India. There is a considerable need of increased end user awareness and making a conscious decision to secure wireless networks. Organisations large and small are failing to respond to the culture of employees using their own mobile devices for work and are opening up their systems to security risks. Several organizations allow staff to use smartphones and tablets to connect to their company needs but do not apply data encryption on the devices. There is increased report of security breaches and leakage of confidential information which makes the need for security in such personalized environments. So this changing work culture can lead to security threats both by virus attacks and data loss, which can only be controlled by effective secure protection. While desktop virtualization has been around for a long time, it is only recently that it has caught the attention of Indian organizations across verticals. The rise of BYOD, coupled with reduced hardware and management costs is forcing organizations to take steps to adopt this trend. The enterprises in India have taken up desktop virtualization in a big way trying to understand the benefits of adoption of desktop virtualization. A report by Gartner also substantiates this upward trend in desktop virtualization adoption, estimating that by 2013, 40 percent of all corpo-

IT security is continuously evolving What changes have you witnessed in the security trends this year over the past in the ever changing IT landscape? The t hreat landscape is evolving very fast and security trends are fighting hard to keep up pace. These threats are aimed at financial gains both at enterprise and consumer area. There has been an increased attack on Social media All these factors have lead to the enhancement in current products and introduction of new offering to enhance comprehensiveness of security.
How have the Indian enterprises taken up to the adoption of cloud computing? Has the percentage of IT spending on cloud witnessed an increase? Cloud adoption has moved from hype cycle to real adoption. A recent data of India talks about 30% of compute and 20% storage movement from on-premise to cloud model which is indeed a big change. The private cloud is leading the pack followed by PaaS and IaaS which are being increasingly leveraged by startups for innovations. SaaS continues to expand market and make application affordable and manageable for a larger target audience.
What growth have you witnessed in this year? Desktop virtualization has been around for a long time. The success has been limited since the benefits are more on manageability aspects and not so on commercial aspects.
BOYD also brings into focus the security features of mobile devices like smart phones and tablets. Do enterprises take these factors into consideration while evolving security needs? BYOD is a new need with young work force who prefer to use their own personal device for both official and personal work. BYOD does extend productivity benefit leading to employee satisfaction. Since these devices are being used outside firewall for other purposes, there is higher risk to enterprise

data and network. The effectiveness of protection is much better for a pure enterprise device being used solely for official purpose as compared to BYOD due to technology, awareness and process fronts.
Has cost effectiveness become important parameter for IT security? IT initiatives are increasingly tied to business initiatives. Security thus becomes a integral part of the IT initiative supporting a business initiative. Ensuring effective management of digital assets to grow business profitably thus becomes goal and direction of IT/Security initiatives. Cost is not a major factor as long as IT is aligned to business needs.
Ho do wireless networks counteract vulnerabilities? Critical application and infrastructure access is better served by incorporating 2 factor authentication in addition to standard wireless security/encryption/password options. We now have 2FA which are affordable, easy to integrate, deploy, use and manage and hence one should take full advantage of benefits of managed enterprise wireless, IPSEC VP, SSLVPN technologies in a safe and secure way.
rate desktops will be virtual desktops. Gartner also says that the desktop virtualization market is estimated to be worth at least USD 1.8 billion by 2012. Indian enterprises have become more open to the idea of adoption of desktop virtualization for secure networks. Server Virtualization has been adopted by many enterprises as they provide added benefits such as reduced hardware costs, management costs and energy consumption. They are now looking to extend the same benefits at a desktop level with desktop virtualization. The enterprises have to virtualize their servers and storage before deploying desktop virtualization. With the visible success of server virtualization, the Indian commercial market is now open to the idea of desktop virtualization. Today’s workforce is becoming increasingly mobile and wants to use a growing array of client computing and mobile devices, based on their personal preference. Mobile devices themselves are increasingly becoming the target of attack. Hackers have started to realize the potential goldmine of data that exists within mobile devices and unauthorized app stores provide an easy means of distribution for mobile applications – some of which are not legitimate. Factors like, enabling BYOD without compromising on data security, long-term cost benefits, convenience for the IT to remotely manage all virtual desktops and feasibility of utilizing virtualization software to enable even a single PC to be shared by many users, are actually driving the adoption of desktop virtualization not onlyacross enterprises but also amongst educational institutions and SMBs. With the consumerization of IT, the mobile worker is also evolving as a virtual worker for whom location and device are becoming less relevant. They want a rich desktop experience, be it on a laptop, a tablet PC or even a smartphone. Most employees want to use a tablet or a smartphone for work and companies are under pressure to provision these devices, while maintaining control and security of the company’s data and network. IT departments and dedicated information security professionals face challenges from all directions as they fight to maintain a coherent security strategy that both protects data, and responds to the changing needs of users and the business at large.

BYOD has increased the scope for the adoption of desktop virtualization in India. What growth have you witnessed in this year?
Focus has increased tremendously on cyber crime and cloud computing expansions; and hence cloud computing security is getting major focus.
BYOD is going to be adapted in most of the organizations. As per the CyberMedia research by 2015, every employee in an organization is expected to carry at least two smart devices along with them to the work place. So for any organization it becomes necessary to allow secure securely access of data. This is one of the major reasons that the adoption of desktop virtualization becomes necessary for enterprises.
How have the Indian enterprises taken up to the adoption of cloud computing? Has the percentage of IT spending on cloud witnessed an increase? Adoption of cloud computing has taken a slow but steady start. There is a space in adopting cloud largely by the enterprises but it is likely to gain momentum in near future. Enterprises are still concerned about security issues pertaining to placing their data on cloud. Hence there are many service providers who are trying to address security issues with their new innovative product lines. Government policy on cloud computing

uconquered Cost effectiveness has always been the guru mantra. Various organizations try to answer it in their own way, however virtualization and collaboration is either being considered as an alternative or being proactively used by various sectors.
What changes have you witnessed in the security trends this year over the past in the ever changing IT landscape? As compared to last year wherein we observed over-exploitation of SQLi, LFI and RFI based vulnerabilities; corporate have taken notice of these types of attacks and have put in additional resources to mitigate these attacks. However, BYOD still remains unconquered.
How have the Indian enterprises taken up to the adoption of cloud computing? Has the percentage of IT spending on cloud witnessed an increase? By recognizing the business benefits of cloud computing, its adoption among the Indian enterprises is seems to be driven at a very strategic level. Employees as well as various departments within the enterprise are adopting various cloud computing services. Inclination towards private cloud model is observed amongst the Indian enterprises in order to better understand the technology within their own premises before adopting public cloud model. According to Gartner Inc., “Between 2011 and 2016 the market for Business Process Services in the cloud will double in size to nearly $145 billion in India.
BYOD, in addition to reduced hardware and management costs together leads to enhanced business continuity. This has led to enterprises increasingly adopting desktop virtualization and hence, the technology is gaining a considerable momentum across the country. It is not only enhancing the data integrity but also facilitating a secure remote access to desktop environment. Gradually, it will lead to reshaping the IT landscape.
BOYD also brings into focus the security features of mobile devices like Smartphones and Tablets. Do enterprises take these factors into consideration while evolving security needs? Yes, they have now started taking into consideration the security risks involved with BYOD and to mitigate the new emerging threats specifically targeting BYOD users, eScan has now come up with security solutions for Mobiles and Tablets in order to answer the needs and provide security to this sector.
Has cost effectiveness become important parameter for IT security?

What are the key security threats witnessed in 2012? As compared to last year, threats haven’t changed, however APT and targeted attacks are on the rise, due to prevailing global economic conditions. BYOD users are also being included in the attack vector, which makes it all the more important for us to realize that Security Suite which provides a credible solution to these emerging threats is the need of the hour.
Wireless networks have made the security factor very efficient but it is still considered vulnerable to threats. What are the proactive approaches to counter these vulnerabilities? Wireless networks have and will always remain insecure as these radio waves bleed out of the corporate premises and their traffic can be sniffed without the actual need for being physically attached to the network. Linux and Windows based tools are available which make the task of interception all the more easy. Upgrading to the latest encryption technology, using stronger pass-phrases and restricting access to select devices are some of the proactive approaches which can be incorporated.
