n recent times, security has become a major concern across the world. India has also witnessed a rise in terrorist attacks and increase in crime across the length of the county. The technological advancement in crime has prompted the need for smart and intelligent video surveillance system across the different cities of India. With growing criminal activities, the need of the hour is for reliable and intelligent security systems in India. The advantage of remote monitoring allowed by video surveillance makes it an attractive option over other security features. The Indian security and surveillance market is growing at a rapid pace and comprises of about 30% of the entire security industry. The industry across the globe is largely dominated by analogbased installations, commonly known as CCTVs (closed-circuit television). In India, government and private companies also prefer to install analogue CCTV solutions. However, there is a steady shift happening from analog based surveillance to IP based surveillance which will certainly require System Integrators (SIs) with
skill-set ranging from core networking to software systems. IP-based video surveillance touted as the future of surveillance systems, has replaced closed circuit analog systems, which traditionally dominated the security market. IP surveillance technology allows video to be transferred over the IP infrastructure making it accessible from anywhere in the world. An effective and integrated security system provides
operator control, more usable data, and faster response time, at a reduced cost. By moving on to an IP-based network, building systems operators get better response control. Since IP-based surveillance provides the ability to access footage from any remote location over the internet, security or other authorized personnel need not be in the building or campus to access the data. They can remotely access
“The current China market for security systems is growing at an impressive rate. As per the Asssocham study in terms of sales, the Chinese CCTV cameras are selling like hot cakes and their sales have increased by over 60-70 per cent during the course of last one month itself. With the changing times, surveillance has taken signifance in all sectors. Small and medium enterprises, shops as well as residential complexes and homes have taken up the adoption of surveillance systems. The retail segment has spurred the growth of video surveillance with increasing growth of shopping malls, bank branches and other small offices. The main concern for retail segments is petty shop thefts and irregularities of clients and staff.

S ymante c makes cloud offerings affordable Infofriend spoke with Jyoti Prakash, Country Sales Manager, India and SAARC, Symantec on cloud computing in the security martket. Cloud is the biggest vertical driving the security market. What are your expectations from the segment? There is a lot of hype around cloud computing, and for good reason; the latest Symantec report on cloud found that 90 percent of organizations – SMBs and enterprises – in India are at least discussing how they can take advantage of this trend. However these expectations are also balanced by concerns around information security, privacy and the hidden costs of the cloud. Backup and recovery issues, security concerns due to rogue clouds and compliance challenges are just a few of the concerns that the survey revealed. In this scenario, Symantec is well-placed to enable organizations take advantage of this trend and build safe clouds of the future. We break down cloud barriers by providing companies with three cloud solution models and comprehensive portfolio that provides companies of all sizes a variety of cloud solutions to address their specific needs and current IT environments. These include extending into safe cloud applications and storage by third-party cloud providers, building efficient and available private and public safe clouds, and consuming hosted cloud services by cloud service providers Towards this, our partners are the customers’ first touch point and play a critical role in taking our offerings to the market. As part of Symantec’s vision for safe, agile and efficient clouds, Symantec has introduced new and enhanced cloud channel programs, placing more focus on helping our partners get into new markets.
Has the Indian enterprise opened up to the advantages of cloud technology in India? According to Symantec’s latest Avoiding the Hidden Costs of Cloud 2013 Survey, with significant competitive advantage perceived from cloud computing, a whopping 96 per cent of Indian enterprises and 82 per cent of SMBs are discussing implementation of this strategic IT trend. Across India, enterprises are increasingly looking to gain the scalability, productivity and cost-efficiency that the cloud promises, even as the competitive business environment makes technologies

such as cloud computing a necessity. The question is, how can they enjoy the benefits while maintaining information security and protection? Symantec addresses this with the cloud approach mentioned above.
Why are organizations adopting rogue cloud? What has been the impact of rogue clouds on the cloud computing market? Rogue clouds are created when business groups implement public cloud applications that are not managed by or integrated into the company’s IT infrastructure. For example an internet file sharing service is the simplest form of rogue cloud. It’s a surprisingly common problem, found in 89 percent of Enterprises in India which is resulting in escalating costs related to cloud. Symantec’s State Of Cloud Survey revealed that sensitive information was compromised in 57 percent of Indian enterprises that experienced rogue clouds. The survey found that top rogue cloud issues for SMBs include security, data protection and loss of confidential information. The challenge is escalating, with nearly half (48 percent) of Indian respondents indicating that rogue cloud deployments are becoming more frequent.
Please discuss Symantec’s new and enhanced cloud channel programs. Partners play a critical role in taking Symantec cloud offerings to customers. As part of Symantec’s vision for safe, agile and efficient clouds, Symantec has introduced new and enhanced cloud channel programs, placing more focus on helping our partners get into new markets, to drive exponential growth particularly in the cloud environment. • Cloud Smart e-learning course, is an indispensable tool for partners looking to break into the cloud space; more than recently completed the course and are leveraging the new revenue
streams this program facilitates. • Symantec Cloud Security Essentials Training shares critical cloud knowledge and best practices on building and protecting clouds to help customers design and architect a comprehensive cloud data security strategy, based on Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) guidelines. • Enhanced - Symantec’s enhanced subscription-based licensing program (ExSP ) makes it easier to purchase Symantec solutions via a subscriptionbased model, thus reducing the licensing fees as the partner’s business volume increases. Subscription based buying models offer partners of all sizes to buy software and certain cloud offerings in a monthly subscription model and develop Symantec-based managed services offerings – providing greater flexibility in how deliver solutions to customers while also helping the partners to reduce upfront costs and accelerate profitability
Which are the key segments that drive the cloud computing market in India? Verticals leading cloud adoption in India include cooperative banks, manufacturing sector including automotive and ancillaries, and energy/oil. For these sectors, IT is a non-core operation, yet one which has a direct impact on their business and productivity. Faced with less IT staff, these sectors prefer the simplicity coupled with watertight SLAs that the cloud model provides.
Indian enterprises are lagging behind in the adoption of software tools, what needs to be done to create greater awareness among the enterprises? I would not agree that Indian enterprises are laggards. In fact, in the areas that we operate, end-user security and network security have high awareness and
maturity levels in India. Further, the impact of disasters and downtime are creating new markets in the information protection segment. The latest Symantec Internet Security Threat Report volume 18 revealed a 280 per cent increase in bot infections in India, and the previous report found that 25 per cent of infections are found in tier-II/III cities. Even as technology adoption grows, especially among small and mid-sized businesses.
What are the distinct drawbacks of cloud computing which discourage deployment? • With data increasingly dispersed across physical, virtual and cloud storage, organizations are dealing with a complex and heterogeneous IT environment. Indian Business face various challenges while adopting cloud: • Misaligned expectations: A great divide exists between IT Executive and IT Staff on cloud perceptions and expectations, and also across organizations and in the market. Many IT organizations have a siloed approach to cloud, with cloud initiatives being separate from regular IT operations. While cloud is different in many ways, in an ideal world the management of cloud should be included within existing policies, tools etc.
What are the challenges ahead for the cloud solutions in 2013? Cloud computing holds the promise of scalability, agility and efficiency, but in the absence of a rigorous cloud approach, Indian organizations are not able to fully realize the benefits. Even as organizations adopt the cloud, they are increasingly incurring hidden costs. Rogue cloud deployments are one of the cost pitfalls. Further, cloud is complicating backup and recovery. First, most Indian organizations use three or more solutions to back-up their physical, virtual and cloud data—leading to increased IT inefficiencies. While theoretically, cloud storage has the advantages of being quick to deploy, paying for only what is used and offering easy adjustment of capacity, all of which provide for high storage utilization rates. In practice, however, global cloud storage utilization is actually extremely low at just 17 percent. It’s even worse for SMBs, at just seven per cent. This is resulting in organizations paying for six times as much storage as they need, according to the Symantec survey.
