THE LANGHAM GOLD COAST MAKES HER GRAND ENTRANCE
Stay, play and delay any responsibility at this lavish new hotel.
K
now what time it is? No, not hammer time but Langham time! Thursday 23rd June, the GC’s long-awaited luxury hotel The Langham, Gold Coast (along with Jewel Residences also managed by the luxe-perts at Langham), unleashed a level of lavish we’ve only seen in the feeds of our fave cashed-up influencers! Only no filters required ladies and gents – this priceless gem between the jewels (quite literally) is pure posh perfection, with dining options of the same calibre thanks to a star-studded culinary team. The Langham is dishing up hotel dining industry veteran Craig Robertson as Executive Chef, served with a side of Executive Sous Chef David Vandenabeele, and for dessert/all things pastry (our weakness), Executive Pastry Chef Ryan Stevenson. For ‘starters’ (pun totally intended), Craig Robertson boasts over 35 years’ industry experience and 20 years’ as an Executive Chef leading large-scale teams in luxury hotel environments. Translation, the man can cook anyone under the table…or the Gaggenau oven. Robertson’s most recent gig was
6 | insidegoldcoast.com.au
Executive Chef at InterContinental Hayman Island Resort where he led the Culinary Operations across multiple outlets with diverse, international cuisines. Like we mentioned, joining this icon is Executive Sous Chef David Vandenabeele. Originally from Belgium, David has over 25 years of experience in Michelin Star fine dining and luxury hotels across the world, including Belgium, Australia, London and New York. Most recently leading the F&B pre-opening operations for the launch of the first Curio hotel brand in Australia, this star is definitely Langham-worthy. And the icing on the cake is Executive Pastry Chef Ryan Stevenson, two-time recipient of the Belgium Chocolate Master, plus maker of the 2009 Best Praline in the World. Ryan was previously Pastry Chef for Belgian chocolate brand, Callebaut, Head Pastry Chef at a 3-Michelin star restaurant in Belgium, and is currently team captain for the Australian Pastry Team prepping for the 2023 World Pastry Cup. What a résumé! Together the exceptional team have created unique culinary offerings across
the variety of new Langham Gold Coast dining venues. These range from a humble club sandwich and decadent buffets through to Japanese robatayaki, Michelin-starred Cantonese cuisine, and award-winning cocktails. No prizes for guessing which of the above we’ll be sampling first….cheers! So, if anyone can deliver a world-class dining experience to elevate your senses, it’s this trio. Forming an integral part of the overall luxury experience for guests, the extensive range of dining options will provide a cohesive feeling of luxe. COME ONE, COME ALL TO COME FROM AWAY AT HOTA
It’s a must-see multiple award-winning global musical phenomenon!
R
emember those moments when life completely stopped? Like when you met your soulmate or tasted your very first chilli margarita? There are also those history-making moments when everybody’s world came grinding to a halt, like the incomprehensible chain of events surrounding September 11, 2001. We all remember where we were and how we felt, and the unification stemming from such a collective life-changing experience that followed… and this is precisely why you M.U.S.T. see hit musical Come From Away at HOTA, Home of the Arts, starting Thursday 7th July. The other reason is obvs; it’s a Tony® and Olivier Award winner and a global phenomenon, and whether you’re a musical fan or not, trust us – this is something special. Whilst the core subject matter is undeniably heavy, this timeless piece of groundbreaking art presents an inspirational story of compassion, hope and goodwill. Telling the true story of the immediate aftermath of 9/11, it follows the incredible real-life journey of 7,000 air passengers whose flights were
8 | insidegoldcoast.com.au
diverted due to the incident. These 38 planes were forced to land in the remote town of Gander in Newfoundland, Canada, almost doubling the modest population. Come From Away provides a stirring insight into how this small community welcomed the ‘come from aways’ into their lives, providing hope and compassion to those in need. Whilst cultures clash and nerves run high, the uneasiness turns into trust, music soars into the night, and gratitude grows into enduring friendships. Among its endless accolades are the Tony® Award for Best Direction of a Musical (Christopher Ashley) and four Olivier Awards including Best New Musical, Best Theatre Choreographer, Best Sound Design, and Outstanding Achievement in Music. Since its Australian premiere in 2019, the smash hit production has added five Green Room gongs to its award tally. These include Best Production and Best Ensemble, along with being voted Ticketmaster’s ‘Ticket of the Year’ by Australian audiences, and we are so many levels of sold! To create the book, music and lyrics, Tony and Grammy award nominated husband
and wife duo Irene Sankoff and David Hein went straight to the source, traveling to Newfoundland to interview thousands of locals for the 10th Anniversary commemoration of that fateful week. They collected hundreds of hours of interviews that have now been distilled into the 100-minute show, telling an inspirational story of hope and humanity. Many of the characters are based on real people and the final result is nothing short of breathtaking. Oh and the name? Native Newfoundlanders refer to those not born on the island – like the people who arrived on the diverted flights – as “Come From Aways”. Australian Producer Rodney Rigby and the stellar Aussie cast present this portrait of heroic hospitality exactly as it appeared on Broadway and London’s West End. The outstanding ensemble includes Kyle Brown, Zoe Gertz, Manon Gunderson-Briggs, Douglas Hansell, Kat Harrison, Joe Kosky, Phillip Lowe, Joseph Naim, Sarah Nairne, Natalie O’Donnell, Emma Powell, David Silvestri, together with Kaya Byrne, Jeremy Carver-James, Noni McCallum, Michael Lee Porter, Alana Tranter and Jasmine Vaughns. So get ready to laugh and cry (code for pack the Kleenex) and see this unforgettable story of friendship, and the unwavering strength of the human spirit. Book now!

WE’RE SMITTEN WITH CITRIQUE’S BRAND NEW WINTER MENU No one does winter like JW Marriott Gold Coast.
W
hat’s the best thing about winter? We have to say it’s hitting up our favourite restaurants and eating our way through their winter menus, especially the unbelievable Citrique at JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa. We are unapologetically smitten with its consistently chic dining and have goosebumps just thinking about the winter inspired dishes that await. Now we’ve all experienced the ultimate ocean and paddock to plate goodness of Citrique’s award-winning seafood buffet (and
10 | insidegoldcoast.com.au
if not, are you even a true Gold Coaster?!), but have you sampled the fresh contemporary a la carte offerings? Never failing to incite a chorus line of ‘wow’ and ‘yum’ from guests young and old, the five-star food and service is renowned. Complemented by the exquisite restaurant location and just the right amount of fancy, the only thing whiter than our winter legs are the serviettes on the beautifully set tables. Diners will not be able to get enough of the special winter additions, but remember guys, you only have a few months to taste each and every delectable dish. We’re starting with the Slow Braised Pork Belly with truffle pea puree and caramelised apple because these three flavours together will knock you out cold! Or, perhaps we’ll opt for the Confit Duck Leg with 65-degree egg, truffle orzo and parmesan foam because is it just us, or does everything taste better with truffle? The winter wonder doesn’t stop there though, with jaw-droppingly good Short Rib, Roasted Venison, Pan Roasted Barramundi and Roasted Lamb Rack. Plus
of course there are the usual crowd pleasers guaranteed to delight whether it’s 30 or 13 degrees, the latter similar to an Arctic apocalypse for native Gold Coasters. We’re talking the ever-popular Oven Baked Snow Fish fresh from the southern oceans of Tasmania, with wood-fired cauliflower, lemon zest, dukkha crumble and white miso sauce. Or, for something more petite, it’s hard to pass up the Seared Sea Scallops from Hervey Bay with citrus salad and caviar beurre blanc, or our pick, Bay Bug Dumplings from Moreton Bay with bisque sauce, kaffir lime, coconut sambal and fresh snipped herbs from the JW Garden. Want to invite your group along for a meal to remember? Maybe you have a birthday on the horizon, some sort of celebration to plan, or it’s simply Saturday night and let’s be honest, this is a good enough excuse for any of us. Executive Chef Paul Smart has curated a mouth-watering degustation and thank GOD oversized blazers are in for obvious reasons. Anything this visionary chef cooks up (literally) will blow our minds and this is no exception. The seasonal degustation is $129 per person including still or sparking bottled water, and designed to be experienced by a
table of fine food-lovers. Crafted using only the best locally sourced products as inspiration, get the intel from your friendly waiter about the current seasonal eats on offer. So, drop everything (except that bottle of winter-warming shiraz), because Citrique is coming in hot – despite the cold – with its exclusive winter eats. For an extra injection of indulgence, why not level up to a staycation and enjoy all the JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa has to offer. Perfect for a whirlwind winter romance or a fail-safe recipe for love at ‘frost’ sight. Where: 158 Ferny Ave, Surfers Paradise. When: Breakfast daily from 6.30am-10am, Seafood buffet lunch 12pm-2.30pm Saturday and Sunday. A la carte dinner 6pm-9.30pm Monday to Thursday. Seafood buffet dinner 6pm-9.30pm Friday and Saturday. BLOSSOM INTO YOUR BEST SELF WITH WOMEN IN BLOOM Over 45s, it’s time to hit reset.
A
s women, we love it here at Inside Gold Coast when we hear about events exclusively for our chromosome. However is it just us, or is everything aimed at networking, leadership, entrepreneurship, wellness, boss babes in various industries, chicks who love arty farty stuff, chicks who love wine…and the list goes on. What’s wrong with this you ask? Absolutely nothing (especially the wine one) – if you’re born after 1977 that is. There is an undeniable trend towards events favouring the millennial market, leaving anyone over 45 feeling as though they’re past their ‘best before’ date. Until now! You’ll learn that it’s your turn to feel relevant, reinvigorated and supported as you connect with others experiencing the same struggles and joys, and seeking answers to the same questions. This is not the time to fade away and activate wallflower mode, or banish goals and passions to the ‘I’ve missed the boat’ box. To the contrary, it’s the dawn of a new day where you can be unapologetically you, and tap into all that good stuff bubbling away beneath the surface. With support, a lil guidance, a few nudges and the right intel,
Learn how to fill your cup again … you’ll realise it’s your time to shine – and that this ‘vintage’ is when the fun really starts. Currently the Beauty and Lifestyle Editor for Better Homes and Gardens magazine, this incredibly accomplished yet entirely relatable powerhouse is pure #goals. She is passionate about creating a relaxed and inspiring space for connection and education that is informative yet informal. Gently guiding women down this path of selfrediscovery, her mission is to teach us that it’s never too late to become the best version of ourselves. And amen to that! So local ladies, if you think it’s the norm to let go of your hopes and dreams once you hit a certain age, repeat after us; “nobody puts Baby in a corner” (especially not when she’s over 45!). Women in Bloom will help you ditch those fears and preconceived ideas about this incredibly liberating time of your life. Celebrate your new prime, which brings us to our parting words and we’re pretty excited because we love a good grape juice reference – and this is perhaps the most fitting application yet. A woman at mid-life is like a fine wine; mature, well-balanced, desired and full of flavour – and she really does get better with age. SH-OP AT THIS EPIC SURFERS PARADISE THRIFT STORE Deals n’ steals await at Pacas Recycling Store.
G
one are the days when you raced into an op shop with your shades on for fear someone driving by might recognise you. Or, to source an outfit for Uncle John’s 60s-themed birthday, because those crochet hotpants you rocked like a boss at Splendour were a tad too, umm, Splendour-ish. Well now the pendulum has swung the other way, and scoring a bag full of thrifted loot has become a perfectly acceptable means of updating your wardrobe. In fact, it’s touted as ‘the new black’ of shopping, not just because you get epic bang for your buck and unique finds, but because it’s sustainable. Circularity is the buzz word of 2022 and no industry has embraced this monumental
18 | insidegoldcoast.com.au
movement quite like far-shion. Second-hand clothing meccas like Surfers Paradise’s Pacas Recycling Store are leading the charge in this space, vowing to help save our planet one thrifted garment at a time! Passionate about conscious consumerism and the preservation of our environment, Pacas (not to be confused with Paccers a little further up the road…) encourages us to never pay retail prices – and we oblige! Their massive haul of preloved pieces are sourced from Florida (cool) and they specialise in US designer brands like GAP, Victoria’s Secret and American Eagle. Plus, they get new drops every single Saturday so yes, a little trip to the glitter strip is set to become a weekly event. Cue the sweet vintage finds! Their super cool range will have you popping tags and stealing Grandpa’s style (we don’t really mean that but wanted to quote Macklemore) like a pro! Also, you’ll be doing your bit to support the environment coz friends, listen up. Thanks to fast fashion, the amount of clothing ending up in landfill is harmful to our environment, and Pacas owners Liz Marie de Ycaza and Alfonso Abril have vowed to help change that.
Relocating from Guatemala and Panama in 2018 with professional careers committed to tourism, they were forced to pivot from their original plan due to, well you can guess why (starts with Covid and ends with 19). However, this (not so) little change of plans turned out to be a blessing in disguise, paving the way for Pacas, a Spanish word which translates to “bale of clothing”. People in third-world countries commonly purchase a bale of clothing to resell, hence the catchy name. Drawing inspo from the second-hand shops they have visited abroad, and especially in Guatemala where competition in the thrifted clothing space is fierce, they developed the green print for their very own preloved empire. Offering low-cost, high-quality apparel, their goal is to encourage Gold Coasters to embrace the slow fashion phenomenon, rather than buying new. In fact, this savvy duo have more than just our humble town in their sights, dreaming big and aiming to launch 100 second-hand stores across the country in the future. Mic drop. So next time you decide your wardrobe is in need of a little pick-me-up, head to Pacas for some guilt-free awesome new old finds (or old new finds, and we’re just confusing ourselves now but you get the gist). Paying full price is so 2021 and the treasures you can unearth here put Pacas at the top of the thrift store food chain. To once again quote our mate Macklemore, even if you only have $20 in your pocket, this (place) is ** awesome.

Fellas, this isn’t a drill or a dream – it’s an actual, real-life combo of two greats; the barber and the bar, described as the new dawn of golden age barber shops. We’re referring to The BarberBar, a concept so brilliant the GC man folk are lining up in droves to share an ale whilst their manes and flavour-savours get a little TLC. Conveniently located in the heart of Broadbeach, this union of world-class grooming, gathering and gentlemen’s bar options is revolutionising the Gold Coast one cut and shave at a time. Owner Bill Galanis saw a gap in the market and knew precisely how to fill it with finesse and old-school cool factor in equal measure. The BarberBar delivers that traditional barbershop feel, synonymous with quality cuts executed with the utmost precision and attention to detail. It also has that welcoming, friendly atmosphere which makes you feel like you’ve just walked into a roomful of your

Decked out with an expansive and wellstocked bar, free billiard table, and not one but two sizeable screen TVs to catch all the large sporting events ranging from UFC, NRL, AFL and soccer matches. Let’s just say it’s the ultimate man cave. The hair artists (who have been meticulously selected) are genuinely passionate pros and widely regarded as masters of their craft. They really understand men’s hair and have a dedicated following of staunch clientele who wouldn’t trust anyone else with their precious strands. Whether you’re in the market for a classic men’s cut, crew cut with sharp manicured edges and a clean neck and brows, or maybe you’re just not really sure what you want and need a style guru to guide you, these gents with their vast experience have got you covered. The man-love doesn’t stop there though, with hot towel shaves, crumbcatcher trims, waxing and facials (who said ladies are the only ones who get pampered?)! Aside from congregating with your fellow
mates, getting the chop (relax… not THAT chop) and kicking back watching the footy with drink in hand, there’s another massive drawcard to this place. All services come with an optional complimentary cold beverage (has anyone ever said no to a bevvie?) and a little slice of heaven… The BarberBar signature hot or cold towel finish. We have it on good authority that it’s the duck’s you-know-what’s (we used this analogy for obvious reasons) as they provide the perfect hairy-tale ending. Also, if you have a buck’s or something dude-esk you want to celebrate, a fund-razor to host, or maybe you’re a boss wanting to treat the lads to a spot of grooming with a difference, The BarberBar is available for special bookings and private functions. Yeah the boys! And if you consider yourself a bit of a beard connoisseur, we suggest you join their newly launched Beard Club. This exclusive club is strictly limited to 60 people and must be registered for. But what does the membership include you ask? Well, all we can say is this is a club you’ll want to be a part of, as it includes: a Black Key Ring, “Beard Club” toiletry bag and metal comb, a Jericho Godfather and Jericho Naked Beard Oil, a 2 in 1 Shampoo, Beard Balm, your first full beard service FREE, plus access to other exclusive offers and events! Valued at $194, get your ticket into the club and all of these inclusions for just $175pp. So be quick and keep a close eye on their socials for more information. So, tell your mates, bros and brahs about this (very manly) unicorn of a barbershop, and experience the golden age tradition of a trip for a snip, with new age feels. One thing’s for sure, it’s not your standard visit to the barber. Words by Bianca Trathen

THE NEW GIN-TASTIC BIGGERA WATERS DISTILLERY Get into the spirit at White Oat Distillery.
D
o you hear that? It’s the sound of the Northern ’burbs rejoicing because they FINALLY have their very own premium G.I.N. distillery! When our northside staff got the memo they muttered a little prayer to the Grog Gods, pinched themselves, and then the realisation dawned – IT’S ACTUALLY REAL! Biggera Waters-based White Oat Distillery is officially open for business, so drop everything and text everyone (especially the peeps north of 4215) because this place is a winner ginner! When you walk into the unassuming giant shed-like structure in the industrial area near Harbour Town, you’re in for a treat. Greeted by a sea of timber benches and high stools, a sandy-hued polished concrete floor, a swoony pink vee-jay counter wrapping around the entire space, and a sleek black brick-back taps area, White Oat Distillery is a sight for sore eyes. Festoon lights adorn the sky-high roof, but it has to be the super shiny distillery equipment that is the most awe-inspiring conversation starter. Not only does it look flash, but it pumps out sips that scream “let the fun be-gin”. The White Oat concept blossomed in a humble GC backyard early on in the pandemic.
24 | insidegoldcoast.com.au
Founding trio Andrew Langton, David Beaton and Ryan Goding were three mates sharing some tinnies when they hatched a master plan for gin greatness. Defined by classic tastes, quality ingredients and a modern twist, the blueprint unfolded. Their mission was to open a distillery where the focus wasn’t just on the flavour, but on the overall end-to-end experience and feels. They scoured the country for a top-notch distiller which is precisely what they unearthed in award-winner, Tudor Duxbury. He was warmly welcomed to the team when he started introducing fresh ideas like using oats to make gin to add a velvety mouthfeel. This sort of genius thinking suited the business ethos to a tee. Creating a holistic experience is what White Oat is all about, bringing dimension and experimentation to the gin-drinking movement. White Oat produces two stellar varieties of gin; the White Oat London Dry and the White Oat Berry Pink Gin which can of course be purchased either on-site or online.
But, we must say, their distillery drinks menu is top-to-toe ginny goodness and we don’t know where to look first. There’s gin served with tonic or soda, gin on tap, gin goblets (eeee) and gin cocktails. Oh and for those who don’t dig gin, firstly this is not normal and secondly, there’s beer. Now let’s unpack their signature cocktail (our favourite part), the oh-so-fine New, Old Favourite and snap – that’s precisely what it is! With London Dry gin, ginger, lemon and mint, we could sink these all day long and intend to do just that. For the pink gin enthusiasts, give the More Tea Vicar a crack, with pink gin, camomile, grapefruit, ginger beer and thyme and line ‘em up already coz we’re hella thirsty over here! With capacity for 100+ people, it’s the perfect space for a celebration or just to hang with your mates as you ponder your dreams, the universe and new possibilities….just as the gents did. And the stellar news keeps on coming, because there will be various food trunks on rotation and on-site to line those bellies; and the grand plan is to bring something #extra to other classics (besides gin) in the future. So with its quality sips, ambience and ginboss look and feel, this place is set to bring about a tecTONIC change to the north-side’s entertainment scene. And even if you’re down the other end of the Coast, the ‘wise but cool with a hint of old school’ White Oat Distillery definitely deserves a visit or at the very least a sneaky online shop of their gins. RELAX & RENEW YOURSELF AT CURRUMBIN’S NEW MEDISPA Plus, the salt room at RE/WIND is sodium cool!
W
hether we’re mums, career women or trying to juggle the two without dropping too many kids, wait no, we mean balls… life can be a little busy. Correction, it’s downright chaotic at times leaving us with diddly squat in the tank for a healthy dose of self-love. Well we are here to say enough of that! Because have you ever seen anyone pour from an empty cup? So how can we find time for the likes of massage, sauna, salt therapy, pilates, and shhhh – an injectable here and there? Well, guess what – we no longer need to dash about the Gold Coast to 101 different clinics and send our adrenals further into meltdown mode. We just need to visit ONE luxurious, holistic and intimate medispa to help repair our minds and bodies. Yes ladies, it’s time to step away from that tanty-chucking toddler and relax, restore and reconnect at Currumbin’s new wellness clinic, RE/WIND. Resembling a European spa with a sleek and luxe (but still warm and soothing) ambiance, this is our new favourite place. Full stop and end of story. As clichéd as it may sound, a stint at RE/WIND will leave you feeling like a better version of yourself. The super welcoming, down-to-earth and seriously

clued-up team of therapists just ‘get it’, and know exactly how to address the pain points of the busy 2022 woman. Also, to maintain exclusivity and provide clients with maximum space, quiet and relaxation, classes are limited to four people and we feel the zen already. Who do we have to thank for this little slice of heaven and one-stop shop for all our wellness needs? The gorgeous Leanne Oliveira, a women’s health nurse with 27 years in Gynaecological Oncology and IVF. As you can well imagine, she has seen an endless rotation of beautiful burnt-out women, struggling physically, mentally and emotionally with their health, life and societal ‘expectations’. After having her first baby she too neglected herself in every way, wishing there was a place with multiple services under one roof. Somewhere that focussed on mind, body and spirit with a holistic approach. Fast forward 13 years – and add in a whole lotta research, blood, sweat and tears – and voila, RE/WIND is born. For us, the standout treatment here is salt therapy. This fascinating natural remedy

can help soothe a long list of skin, respiratory and lifestyle conditions, and is even suitable for babies and children. After Leanne saw the amazing difference in her parents’ health after visiting a salt room (mum with heart and lung conditions and dad with psoriasis and osteoarthritis), she knew it just had to be a part of RE/WIND. There are also a range of classes on offer including yoga, pilates, meditation and sound healing all available in the salt room; so you can reap the therapeutic benefits (yes please). Plus they specialise in IV vitamin infusions, NATURAL LOOKING (shouty capitals for a reason) cosmetic injections, PDO threads, fat dissolving injections, scar revision and more. Collaborating with Olibuild and Bec Purchase to lead the build and interior design, the result is an inviting, highly polished, wow-inducing space that does not skimp on luxury. Oh and is this where we mention they have an incredible sauna where you can select your very own tunes to bliss out to? Let’s just say this makes for a perfect destination for birthdays and hens, available for exclusive hire and if you’re not Maid of Honour already, you will be after you book this! So fellow GC female (and male) folk, it’s time to make time for YOU. Paying a little visit to this stunningly beautiful utopia isn’t just time-efficient and good for all dimensions of wellbeing, it should be a rite of passage for us ladies to experience this level of bliss.

SOCIAL EATING HOUSE + BAR UNVEILS IT’S SWANKY NEW LOOK It’s the reno you know we all needed and wanted... and it has finally happened! We are proud to present Social Eating House + Bar 2.0.
I
f we asked you to name your favourite Gold Coast restaurant, we fully expect a chorus line of enthusiastic voices chanting Social Eating House for the win. But, did you know that this local multi-award-winning supernova has recently reemerged as an even more sublime version of its former self? Undergoing a super sleek renovation, just when you thought it had reached the pinnacle of perfection, then comes…. Social Eating House + Bar 2.0! Still serving up Modern Australian and International cuisine like a boss, husband-andwife restaurateur warriors Matthew Jefferson (also Executive Chef) and Dayna Cooper decided to do something special for their business baby’s tenth anniversary. And what better way than to revamp the Social space and brand to pave the way for another decade at the top of the foodie game. Describing it as New York luxury but approachable, it’s relaxed fine dining executed with finesse and impeccable attention to detail, thanks to the expertise of Arch Interiors, CSF Shopfitting and brand architects, Here Agency. With kitchen and

bar dining options and indoor/outdoor seating for 140 people (a must with its enviable location in the heart of Broadbeach’s Oracle precinct), it also houses a private dining room for soirees and functions. Winner for three consecutive years of the People’s Choice ‘Chef of the Year’ Award, Matthew Jefferson and esteemed Head Chef Youngkyu “YK” Reu, continue to lead and nurture their ‘family’ of five-star hospitality heroes. Just like the OG Social Eating House, expect share plates so amazing that you won’t want to actually share them. The Wagyu rump cap 7+ with smoked celeriac, burnt onion, kale and native pepper jus is one of the standout starters and yes, you just had an ‘aha’ moment re. the whole no sharing comment. Another fave from the small plate selection is Roast Quail with pumpkin puree, savoy cabbage and venere rice and OMG, back up the van already because we didn’t mention
Charcuterie. This is downright blasphemy because, CHARCUTERIE! Served with accompaniments and baguette, we recommend the Jamon Iberico de cabo 50g and as always, you’re welcome. Level up the experience with one of the extensive award-winning wines, and/or (we’re going with ‘and’) Social’s signature cocktails. Now normally we only profile one, but this is possibly the most experimental and exciting curation of cocktails we’ve seen, so we’re upping the ante. The Beet It with Botanist Gin, yuzunshu, beetroot and ginger, yuzu, lime and sesame oil spoke to us, as did the El Troppo with Bacardi, pineapple, lychee, allow, green tea, lime and tapioca pearls. And if you’re really feeling something unique, go with the Uni-corn; Mezcal, Herradura Reposado tequila, creamed corn, lime and smoked Orgeat. Yep, our minds are blown too. Finally, we must insist you do right by your stomach and leave room for something sweet, like the Lemon Chiboust, white chocolate ice-cream and brown butter crumbs. Or ask the super-knowledgeable staff for their recommendations because they are so genuinely passionate, friendly and eager to share their foodie intel and love of all things Social. So happy anniversary Social Eating House and thank YOU for having a milestone birthday – because we are the ones who get to celebrate your new New York swagger.

MEET THE UNBEERLIEVABLE NEW BURLEIGH WATERING HOLE Burleigh Barrels Brewery, Distillery & Smokehouse is ale we need in our life.
I
f there’s one trend that we never want to end (besides the mum jean and the margarita), it’s the influx of breweries here on the Gold Coast. Our excitement doesn’t wane one iota when another ‘hops’ on the bandwagon, and this southern Gold Coast superstar (which lay dormant for over two years, but more on that later…) embodies why we’re bonkers for a brewery. Set in the postcode we know always delivers the cool, Burleigh Barrels Brewery, Distillery & Smokehouse is THE place to sink a ‘starch smoothie’, trading out the smoothie part for malt, hops and yeast (aka beer). But don’t be fooled, it’s not just for the amber ale drinkers, as the eats, carefully crafted wine list and cracking cocktails are shut-up-good…as is the fit-out. With a brewtiful chilled coastal beach meets industrial brewery ambience, this reimagined former tavern gives the right amount of ‘just came off the beach’ feels. For beer loving mates Pat McCarthy and Peter Trimble, it all started during a European mate-cation and don’t all the best stories start like this?! After visiting some Trappist

breweries, staying in the odd beer-producing castle and sampling many of the secretly made local brews, they knew what they had to do. Back in Oz, they excitedly took the plunge and signed a lease… exactly three months prior to the pandemic. But, these eternal ‘hoptomists’ clung to their dream for two years, still paying rent and OMG is this not the ultimate commitment to the cause. Fast forward to now and whoomp here it is; a coastal-cool brewery well worth the wait. Featuring indoor seating, a private dining and function room, outdoor undercover dining, a fully functioning brewery and a soon to be installed distillery. It’s proudly the only brewery/distillery on the Gold Coast which is fully licensed with a full-service kitchen (bravo!) cooking up a plethora of feeds infused with locally sourced ingredients. There is a core range of six beers brewed on the premises (under the careful eye of Head Brewer Chris), six rotating guest taps from other local breweries, wines by the bottle and glass (we’ll go the bottle thanks), and an extensive cocktail list. So much yes!
The signature Beef Brisket with 200g of eight-hour slow cooked beef brisket and South Carolina Sauce will blow your mind….and your calorie intake but #worth it. Or perhaps the Truffle Burger with 200g grass-fed Angus Beef patty, truffle mayo, onion marmalade and roasted field mushrooms is more your jam? Maybe you’re channelling a snack and does anything satisfy more than a Bug Roll and we all know the answer to this. With crispy tempura-battered Moreton Bay Bug tail, lettuce, shredded tropical paw paw and chipotle mayo, we’ll take five thanks. Or, opt for something from the ribs, wings, salads, or authentic sourdough pizza selections. While we’re on the topic of pizza, do yourself a favour and grab a Nutella and Banana Pizza for dessert, smothered with Nutella and covered with fresh bananas and brown sugar, roasted until crisp and gooey and served with a side of vanilla ice cream. But food shmood – let’s talk booze, starting with their beers and the Hill Vibes Session Lager (3.3% ABV) is a, well, vibe. A modern take on a traditional Munich Helles Lager, it’s enhanced with the addition of honey malt and the use of the noble hop; hallertrau mittelfruh, creating a palette-pleasing full-flavoured, mid-strength lush lager. Meanwhile, moving on to cocktails, and whaddya know – the most popular choice is the one and only Chilli Margarita. So ‘hop’ to it folks and eat, sleep, beer (and wine and cocktail…), repeat at Burleigh Barrels Brewery, Distillery & Smokehouse… the ‘pitcher’ perfect location for your next cruisy catch-up. OW dangerous could it be to help an old school friend find love? The Near Daphne Experience is a witty, original debut novel from Australian author Alison Reynolds. It explores relationships and their breakdowns and how dangerous it can be to search for love. Dr Daphne Buckley has been treating JC at the Peaceful Glades Psychiatric facility for some time. She has high hopes for his rehabilitation, even if she’s the only one. In search of her own great love, Daphne submits a classified to the paper. She is smart and determined but how good is her judge of character, really? Told through a series of letters and other correspondence from her judgemental and smothering mother, her high school best friend and a rotating roster of other quirky and curious characters, The Near Daphne Experience will continue to shock and surprise you until the very last page. SM. What’s that all about? It is an acronym for Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. Three wine varieties that love to be blended together and are well known for their generally full-bodied, spicy, powerful and silky complex red fruit flavours with fantastic ageing potential. From the Barossa Valley, Brave Souls GSM 2020 is approachable and delicious. Crimson red in colour, with lifted youthful redberry, cinnamon and anise spice aromas. A delicious, fleshy and rounded Grenache based wine with silky tannins and texture. But - like all pedigree GSM wines – has the ability to mature well for the medium to longer term. Just like The Near Daphne Experience novel will surprise you until the very last page, this wine will leave wanting more until the last glass. WINE: Brave Souls GSM 2020, Barossa Valley SA RRP $25. ’M trying to grow the idea of chocolate as a food and flavour experience. Sure, classics are classics for a reason but there’s also room for contemporary updates and experimentation. Bold combinations of flavours. Chocolates that almost don’t look like chocolate. If you’re a chocolate lover ready to try something surprising and new, the Tasmanian Pepperberry Caramel filled chocolate pralines might be just the thing. Originally created for a client who wanted to showcase native Australian flavours for their international guests. It certainly does that. The caramel provides the richness and sweetness we all love and it’s cut through with the fruity, earthy and fragrant pepperberry. A unique Aussie flavour bomb inside a fine dark chocolate shell. The Tasmanian pepperberry is an exciting bushfood you can use in both sweet and savoury dishes. It adds depth and character to the classic caramel and pairs well with chocolate. Spice up your life! CHOCOLATE: Tasmanian Pepperberry Caramel – 12 chocolate pralines RRP $33.
