Sierra Energy Overview Sierra Energy is a waste gasification and renewable energy company. Our FastOx gasifier, derived from the steel-making blast furnace, converts nearly any form of waste into renewable energy.

Waste Conversion

FastOx Converts Waste into Renewable Energy The United States creates over 250 million tons of waste annually. Landfills are steadily reaching capacity, in the meantime, they are major emitters of greenhouse gases and are sources of harmful contaminates. Could you imagine a better use for that trash than to power our homes and fuel our cars? Yeah we couldn’t either. Sierra Energy’s FastOx gasifier efficiently— and profitably—recovers energy from a wide variety of waste streams.

FastOx: The solution that changes everything. Size & Scalability Although Sierra Energy is focused on a small-scale, distributive approach to waage gasification, FastOx can scale from 5 to well over 10,000 tons per day in a single unit. Meaning FastOx is the leading scalable and sustainable gasifier on the market. Simple Design The straightforward design of the FastOx gasifier creates operational advantages including minimal maintenance and competitive economics.

Thorough Conversion FastOx gasifiers thoroughly convert waste without creating toxic products requiring disposal. Waste Flexibility FastOx processes a wide variety of waste streams simultaneously. This allows the utilization of FastOx in multiple settings with multiple wastes.

Derived from Blast Furnaces Our gasifier is derived from the centuries-old blast furnace. This legacy allows our gasifier to accomplish the scale, flexibility, efficiency, and profitability that other systems cannot. This also means that our solution can be applied inexpensively as a retrofit to existingblast furnaces. Plus, we have the added benefit of tapping the resources of a long-established and global support industry.

SYNGAS

Waste is fed into the top of the gasifier. Oxygen and steam are injected into the bottom of the gasifier, avoiding greenhouse gas emissions caused by nitrogen found in ambient air. Optimizing the injection of oxygen and steam is the main innovation of the process. As the waste descends inside the gasifier, it is broken down at the molecular level and recovered as valuable products. The FastOx gasifier does not produce any toxic remnants or wastes requiring disposal.

Technology Overview

How it Works

Valuable Products Syngas: a synthetic gas used to create hydrogen and electricity, or refined into clean fuels such as diesel or ethanol. Inert Stone: Plastics, glass, and other inorganic materials are melted into a non-leaching stone called slag, used for cement and other construction materials. Metal: Metals are recovered as a recycled, liquid metal which is also sold for reuse.

Flexibility FastOx converts a wide-variety of waste streams including: municipal solid waste, medical waste, biomass, industrial waste, hazardous waste, and more. FastOx is capable of processing materials with a high moisture content. Thus, different waste streams can be processed simultaneously with minimal preparation.

In Action

Development Background The FastOx gasifier has been in development since 2004. The Department of Defense selected the technology for demonstration in 2009, commissioning a series of gasifiers and the testing of multiple feedstocks. By the end of 2012, over 1000 hours of testing conclusively proved FastOx efficiently converts waste into an energy-dense sygnas with minimal emissions and produces a non-leaching, salable slag. Path Forward The U.S. Department of Defense has invested $3 million to install a FastOx system at U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hunter Liggett in Monterey County, CA. This small-scale FastOx system will process post-recycled waste from the base and produce renewable electricity to support the Army’s zerowaste and zero-energy efforts. In the summer of 2012, Sierra Energy received a $5 million investment from the California Energy Commission for the construction of a commercial facility at the Port of West Sacramento to convert waste into ultra low carbon renewable fuels.

Validations

Sierra Energy is commercializing its FastOx Pathfinder — a modular gasification system that will convert nearly any form of waste into renewable energy. The initial models are intended to convert trash into electricity or renewable fuels; other back end products are also being developed.

External experts have studied and validated our technology, both independently and at our request. For more information, visit our website www.SierraEnergyCorp.com.

About our Company Established in 2004, Sierra Energy is actively commercializing its FastOx gasifier making waste gasification attainable and profitable on a global scale. Our technology was initially developed by Bruce Claflin (Chief Industrial Engineer – Kaiser Steel) and John Jasbinsek (consultant for Kaiser Steel). While, they were initially only looking for a way to produce iron more efficiently, they soon realized their technology was even better at cleanly and efficiently converting waste into energy. Thus, the FastOx gasifier is a modern application to a long-established technology. Sierra Energy continues to develop its intellectual property through research, development, and demonstration. We are continually expanding our know-how, expertise, contacts, and resources. Our committed and driven team is dedicated to bringing this technology to the market, drastically changing how our nation disposes of post-recycled waste. Sierra Energy stands ready to work with renewable developers and project sponsors. Please contact us for more information.
