Development Background:

The FastOx gasifier has been in development since 2004. The Department of Defense selected the technology for demonstration in 2009, commissioning a series of gasifiers and the testing of several feedstocks. By the end of 2012, these tests conclusively proved FastOx efficiently converts waste into an energy-dense syngas with minimal emissions and produces a non-leaching slag.

Path Forward:

Sierra Energy is building its first commercial gasifier, the FastOx Pathfinder, for the U.S. Army at Fort Hunter Liggett in California. This small-scale, turn-key, waste gasification system processes postrecycled waste and produces renewable electricity to support the Army’s zero waste & energy efforts.

reserves.

How the process works:

Waste is fed into the top of the gasifier while oxygen and steam are injected into the bottom. The injection of oxygen and steam is one of Sierra Energy’s patented innovations and the leading cause of the energy-dense synthesis gas (syngas) collected at the top of the gasifier. As waste descends, by gravity, through the gasifier it goes through four reaction zones: drying, devolatization, partial oxidation, and melting. The FastOx gasifier provides the advantage of enabling all these steps to occur in a single unit. Other conversion technologies involve similar reactions but require different units to accomplish each step.

The FastOx Gasifier Offers Flexibility.

FastOx gasifiers convert a wide variety of waste streams including: municipal solid waste, medical waste, industrial waste, construction and debris waste, hazardous waste, and more. Flexible and capable of processing materials with a high moisture content, FastOx gasifiers, can also process different waste streams simultaneously with minimal preparation.

High-Value Products FastOx gasification thoroughly converts waste into one of three high-value products:

Metal: Metals are recovered as a recycled, liquid metal which is sold for reuse. Inert Stone: Minerals, glass, and other inorganic materials are melted into a nonleaching stone called slag. This is used for cement and other construction materials.
