Get ready Brockville, the Holidays are almost here! This year make yours a “Brockville” Christmas. “We have a real ‘gem’ here”, says Dave Paul, Director of Economic Development, “Brockville is a great location unlike anywhere else in the country. We have a beautiful waterfront, we’re situated between major urban centres, our historic downtown is second to none and Brockville offers amenities you would normally expect from communities three times our size.” Brockville truly is a unique place with a mix of history and modern wrapped up in a friendly community. Downtown Brockville has all the elements that make this a perfect place to live, work or simply play! Our downtown has the attributes unrivalled by any other city in Ontario, a beautiful, historic downtown that has architecture and ambiance unlike any other city and a abundance of truly unique shops and boutiques. There really isn’t anything you can’t find here; fashion, home decor, shoes (we all love shoes!) and so much more. “Brockville is truly going through a transitional period, and we, as residents need to embrace change,” Dave

explains, “We’re working hard to market our community to new residents as well as visitors. The summer of 2013 will bring to fruition plans for new events and many changes to Brockville, we’re really excited about this city’s future.” In September 2012 the Province of Ontario confirmed the approval of a blockbuster grant enabling the hosting of Tall Ships for the City of Brockville as part of the community’s signature War of 1812 commemorative event scheduled for June 15 and 16th 2013. The visit is part of a multi-port Great Lakes Challenge. Additionally, the new initiative will provide the genesis to shepherd a replacement tourism festival for Riverfest which was terminated after 29 successful years of economic vitality for our river city. Planning and logistical infrastructure enhancements have commenced to ensure a new venue and location for the activities and reenactments. Some of the activities under assessment include the following: hosting 4-6 Tall Ships from around the world, First Nation’s Showcase, classic antique boat rendezvous in cooperation with Clayton Antique Boat Museum, Celtic and Sea Shanty Entertainment, Wine and Food Festival at Brockville Railway Tunnel, Aquatarium Opening Festivities and a General Isaac Brock film exhibition. Brenda Clarke, Executive Director of the DBIA is also looking forward to a wonderful Holiday season and a bright New Year for Downtown Brockville. “I believe we have the best of

“Downtown Brockville’s ‘Shop Outside the Box... Shop Downtown Brockville’ campaign has been a great success in encouraging people to rediscover their beautiful Downtown. I look forward to an exciting 2013 and beyound.” Brenda concluded.

everything right here in Downtown Brockville and it is only getting better.” Brenda continues, “The future looks promising with new development and attractions, but we must continue to look for opportunities.” Downtown Brockville welcomed eleven new businesses in 2012 and there are plans for at least four new ventures in the New Year. “We’re working on a something new for 2013, the Downtown Revitalization Project. This will help us determine which businesses we should be attracting to the Downtown core and also help us to better understand our trade area.” The DBIA’s mission is to increase awareness of shopping local and the importance of what that means to our community. Everyone needs to embrace this concept at every opportunity to help sustain our businesses. “Keeping dollars right here is a win for everyone.” Brenda tells me, “This year we have had an advertising campaign daily on the radio along with bi-weekly ads. These ads speak about what Downtown Brockville has to offer and included one spot that listed the businesses open on Sunday. The businesses reported very good results with considerable increases over 2011.” The 2012 Holiday season in Downtown Brockville kicked off with the 3rd annual Black Friday event. Once again, it was a huge success with many Downtown businesses opening their doors at 8 am on Friday, November 23rd to line-ups of eager shoppers.

Brenda Clarke, Executive Director, DBIA

This should be the year where you make a point to check out your Downtown. There are many unique businesses offering products you just won’t find anywhere else. Brockville can boast of great places to buy the latest fashions for the entire family on any budget, shoe stores, gift stores, antiques and collectibles, books, furniture and home decor; not to mention the abundance of restaurants. You can indulge in pub fare, fine dining, exotic cuisine or a quick lunch served up with fresh coffee. Brockville truly has something for everyone. This Holiday season Brockville is going all out with festive celebrations and events. Each Saturday the Brockville Farmers Market will allow you to find that special something for your Holiday shopping, and before you head home to wrap gifts take the time for a horse and wagon ride through the Downtown. In addition, there will be carollers and reindeer at the Museum each Saturday. The annual Santa Clause parade drew large crowds on Saturday, November 24th despite the cold weather. King Street was lined with families eagerly waiting for a glimpse of Santa and Mrs. Clause. We even had a few snowflakes to heighten the festive atmosphere, there were definitely red noses in the crowd. “Get out and enjoy our community throughout the coming months; hike or bike along our wonderful pathways, take advantage of the unique waterfront Brockville has to offer, and above all continue growing Brockville’s reputation for being one of the friendly places to live or visit.” Dave Paul concludes with his sincere wish that everyone has a warm and safe Holiday season. Support your Brockville businesses this year and watch how we’ll grow. Happy Holidays and have a very, merry Brockville Christmas.

Starting a new business or running an existing one can have many challenges. You need to be a salesperson, a bookkeeper, a marketing expert, a social media expert, a media buyer, an ad designer and so much more - it can be overwhelming. As a business owner you can’t be an expert on everything, and it takes ‘everything’ to be successful! The best advice I can give you? Take help where ever you can get it, find local resources and utilize them to the Max. Small business is the backbone of Ontario’s economy. That’s where the Small Business Enterprise Centres come in. Their focus is your bottom line. Whether you’re just starting up or you’ve been in business for a few years, they offer the practical support entrepreneurs needs to thrive in today’s economy. “We’re here to help business owners find the resources they need to become successful.” Wendy Onstein explains, “Everything from advice about good bookkeeping practices to marketing and sales and everything in between, and it’s all available to your business at no cost!” The Ontario government, along with federal and municipal counterparts, as well as leading private-sector companies have joined forces to make the Entrepreneurship Centres a truly innovative network.

“The SBEC works with youth in the area to introduce them to the idea of business ownership with our annual ‘Summer Company’ program”, Wendy says, “This is a great way for young entrepreneurs to learn what it really takes to be a successful business owner. It’s a wonderful program and one I really look forward to every year.” The SBEC also allows you to connect to other business owners. The Business Success Coaching Program is a formalized business coaching program that has been developed to help you as an entrepreneur or small business grow, expand and propel your efforts to the next level of success. Their objective is to assist all established businesses, successfully operating for a minimum of one year. You will be given the opportunity to receive guidance, ideas, and insightful perspectives from experienced small business professionals. Based on their experience/knowledge our coaches will: listen and discuss your business challenges and provide you with feedback in a forthright, honest manner. Offer suggestions to help identify any shortcomings that maybe holding you back and help you generate ideas and options relating to your business growth, development and goals. The coaches will assist you in building more confidence staying focused and maintaining a high level of motivation and empower you to make solid business decisions. They will also refer you to additional professionals when appropriate. I actually started my business due to the advice I received from the SBEC and without Wendy’s advice and input over the past years you wouldn’t have an opportunity to read this article. Wendy and her staff are there for every aspect of your business and their services are invaluable. I know I am not alone when I say, ‘Thank you for everything!’

With Christmas on the horizon it’s time for a quick word on turkey and wine pairings. There isn’t much time between when Living in Brockville hits the streets and when you will be sitting down for your holiday meal so I will make some general recommendations. The volume of business the LCBO has in this season and the availability of any given wine added to the importance people place on their Christmas dinner makes specific recommendations a fool’s game. Over the years I have tried to impress on readers that turkey provides a fairly neutral background for wine partners. Gravy, stuffing or dressing and cranberries are all part of the holiday meal in an effort to add some glamour to the turkey, because, frankly, it can use the help. Serve your favourite wines with the holiday bird, with a few rules in mind. When thinking about red wine for the pairing avoid anything with firm tannins. Aim for well-balanced reds with generous, soft fruit such as Pinot Noir, Beaujolais (or Gamay), Zinfandel or Shiraz. White wines for consideration include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. These are all wines with zesty acidity and crisp, fresh fruit flavours. In the meantime here is a stylish California red that will be a crowd pleaser at any holiday get-together. Mirassou Pinot Noir 2011 (CSPC# 185249, $12.95, both LCBO) offers superb balance and sweet ripe fruit flavours that make it eminently quaffable. Dark berry, spice and bramble berry aromas dominate the open, enticing nose. Generous black currant, plum and red cherry fruit are nicely harmoniously balanced by a zesty, refreshing acidity. Vanilla, oak and a light spice add to the complexity of this stylish Pinot. The finish has remarkable depth of flavour and ample length. Mirassou represents great value and quality-wise is a head above any other Pinot Noir below $15. Serve by itself or with chicken, duck or salmon. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy!

BROCKVILLEINK

rockv B r o List F h s i By Russ Disotell A W This month in honour of the holiday season Brockville Ink will have a somewhat different format. In a takeoff of the popular Christmas song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, we will look at the twelve gifts I would like Brockville to receive in the upcoming year. In keeping with the prevailing atmosphere of fiscal restraint each day receives only one gift, no “five gold rings” for the budget conscious.

First Day of Christmas Let’s start with what may be the most abstract of our gifts, yet arguably the most important. Brockville Ink is essentially a monologue about everything and anything Brockville. But it is a monologue with a difference. It’s an attempt to stimulate a dialogue. Living in Brockville and Brockville Ink have endeavoured to start a conversation about the city and its future and more importantly what the average citizen would like to see in that future. We want the conversation to be inclusive. Never written a letter to City Hall? Not had the opportunity to buttonhole a Councilor? No problem, we want to hear from you. There have been e-mails in response to all of the Brockville Ink columns, which is very gratifying. Most have been positive, some less so, but at least we’re talking. You can only find solutions through discussion. I will answer each e-mail and I can promise if you have interesting insights I will steal them for inclusion in the column, with the proper accreditation!

Second Day of Christmas The Aquatarium comes online next year and it goes without saying that most residents wish it the greatest of success. Instead of sugarplums dancing in our heads we can drift off to sleep with visions of inquisitive tourists roaming our streets. But more than that my wish is that the opening will be the impetus for a renaissance in the city. Brockville isn’t a one-attraction town. Hopefully other attractions, festivals and organizations can use this springboard to move themselves front and center and catch some attention. The Aquatarium’s plans for a campus approach to tourism is a great idea, hopefully others can take the idea and broaden it out.

i ll e

Third Day of Christmas This is a fairly simple wish. Brockville is a beautiful city, not perfect, but with many exquisitries to offer both the resident and visitor. Everyone should have the opportunity to spend some time with a visitor to our city, to see it through a fresh perspective. To see the many things we should appreciate and celebrate, because not every city has them. “Always looking for flaws leaves little time for construction.” Alfred Lord Tennyson had one of my favourite responses to negativity, “If I make dark my countenance, I shut my life from happier chance.” It’s time for a rebirth of civic pride and for those who love their city to drown out those who mistake negativity for objectivity.

Fourth Day of Christmas Again a fairly simple wish and one that links in with civic pride. When I look at a piece of promotional literature for the city I want to know it’s about Brockville. No generic graphics please! No meandering piece of river, which could easily be mistaken for the Amazon or the Rhine, but is actually somewhere east of Gananoque. Almost every tourist stops and takes a picture of Courthouse Square and the Courthouse. That’s the iconic view taken away by visitors as their memory of Brockville. It should be used on all of our tourism and city promotional materials. Branding is a buzz word that is probably overused these days, but if we’re going to make the effort to promote ourselves we should use images we all recognize as Brockville.

Fifth Day of Christmas Did you know that Brockville has a connection with Oscar Wilde and “The Picture of Dorian Gray”? How about Louis Riel’s Red River Uprising? The first Orange Lodge in Canada? The greening of the California desert and electricity arriving in Los Angeles? Bram Stoker and Mark Twain? The Brockville Museum’s motto is “History Lives Here” and no better description of the city can be found. My fifth wish is that there is an increase in interest in the city’s rich heritage and personalities. What better way to understand our uniqueness and celebrate it with our visitors?

Brockville’s Original Hometown Magazine

December2012

11

Sixth Day of Christmas The blight on the downtown known as the old Liquidation World or Woolworth’s is well known to everyone. In a fit of frustration I did my due diligence and contacted the Ontario Ministry of Finance for possible routes of offsetting the provincially mandated commercial property tax rebate on vacant properties. Unfortunately there are none. So my wish is that the owner finds buyers who realize the potential of the location and rids us of this eyesore.

Seventh Day of Christmas There is a “usual suspects” theme when it comes to local Boards or volunteer committees. You see many of the same people volunteering for multiple organizations. It is wonderful having the civic minded offering of their time and talents but I think they could use a hand. Many enjoy the products of the labour of the few. Almost all organizations worry about succession planning and continuity of their efforts. I understand today’s challenges of two income families and people holding more than one job. The lament of “I don’t have any time” is heard over and over. But for those who have the time and the inclination there is a dire need for volunteers. The artistic and cultural amenities we’ve grown accustomed to can’t continue without the next generation of organizers. So my wish is for a new wave of volunteers, or, not being greedy, at least a trickle.

Eighth Day of Christmas No more equivocating, we have to aim for the highest possible standards. No longer is middle of the pack good enough. We sell ourselves and the city short if we set our sights too low. Once, in defence of a slipshod city initiative I was told that, “We had to try something and it’s better than doing nothing.” Well, no it isn’t and definitely not any more. If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.

Ninth Day of Christmas How about a “Heritage Theatre Trail” promotion? Start in Kingston, with stops in Gananoque, Brockville, Prescott and Morrisburg. Each municipality has world class theatre and Cl asses Offer e d: L e ar n to q u i l t Class • Quilts • Pillows Schedule • Table Runners available in store • Designer Bags

also available • Quilting Fabric • Notions • Books & Patterns • Locally Crafted Pottery • Baskets, Quilts • Decortive Items

12

LivinginBrockville

plenty of heritage attractions to explore in the daytime. The drive along Highway 2 is picturesque and far more interesting than the 401. Five days, five theatres, five historic municipalities with the Arts Centre as the crown jewel. Sounds like a wonderful vacation package to me. We can wish!

Tenth Day of Christmas: What would you expect from a writer, but more books? Specifically more books on Brockville history, the River and the region. As the “weekend guy” at Leeds County Books I am always asked by tourists for these types of books as souvenirs. The new Brockville calendar is a step in the right direction.

Eleventh Day of Christmas Everyone has bought a gift with the self-indulgent thought that while the recipient will enjoy it I can use it too. This is mine. I wish Brockville had a quality radio program that reflected a real music lover’s interests. Remember Kate Bush, Patti Smith, Ry Cooder, Bob Dylan, Harmonium or any of a thousand other forgotten artists that you never hear on the radio? Did we just imagine this great era of music? In a counter-intuitive move Warren Buffett is buying up American newspapers and making a profit providing quality local news. Radio is always lumped in with newspapers as the areas threatened by the rise of the internet. So is there a spot for a quality music show on the radio? One that could introduce a new generation of music lover to classic artists. I think so and I’m sure there are others who share the sentiment. JRFM or BOB FM are you listening? How about a college or university radio station?

Twelfth Day of Christmas Last, but not least, to all our readers, a very happy Christmas and the best of all possible New Year’s.

BROCKVILLE take out• breakfast • brunch • lunch • dinner • midnight snack • treat meet friends there. Of course everyone loves Don’s Fish & Chips, a year-round favourite.

This Holiday season think local and unique for the best restaurants and eateries. We’ve been getting a lot of feedback from readers about where they love to indulge in culinary delights. We’re just going to pass along some of theses recommendations to you. If you’re looking for a hearty breakfast to start your day, there are three places that have been raved about for your first meal of the day. The first one, Jon’s Restaurant on Perth Street is well known for its fabulous breakfast menu. Good, old-fashioned fare that will even rival your Mom’s home cooking. Second is of course, Tait’s Bakery & Deli, this seems to be a favourite for anyone who works Downtown. A fresh coffee and something decedent like a warm pastry is the way to start your day. Don’t forget Bud’s on the Bay for breakfast - yeah, they serve an incredible breakfast! If you take your time eating it, you can simply stay for lunch as well. Speaking of lunch... Boboli has had rave reviews by LIB readers. The portions, the menu and the relaxing atmosphere make this spot a Brockville favourite. A Brockville icon; 1000 Islands Restaurant is overall the most highly recommended spot in Brockville - but be aware - George doesn’t skimp on the portions, so be hungry. Not to be outdone, Bud’s on the Bay offers a fabulous lunch menu and having the views of our beautiful waterfront mean you’ll linger. If you’ve never been to The Brockberry Cafe & Suites, you have no idea what you’re missing! Everything on the menu is wonderful - my favourite - the gourmet hamburgers. There is a different one for everyone - try them all. The Keystorm on Courthouse draws large crowds for lunch, it’s so convenient and the food is great or check out The Georgian Dragon on King Street - great atmosphere and you’re sure to

Need a quick snack by mid-afternoon? Stop into Ogie’s Cafe & Deli. The muffins are always fresh and I love their coffee and sandwiches. Another spot I always recommend? Metro on King Street - this is a perfect place to grab something when you’re on the go. Their deli is full of fresh ideas for lunch or a snack and I really like the friendly staff. By now it’s dinnertime and after all that shopping you’re just too tired to cook - so don’t! Tandoori Mint is one of Brockville’s newest spots and if you love Indian fare, this is a spot you have to check out. The restaurant has an inviting decor and the food is incredible. If you haven’t been to The New York Restaurant on King Street - you can’t be from Brockville. One of our oldest eateries, it offers both Chinese and Canadian dishes. Another LIB favourite is The Mill on Water Street. This is a great place for a romantic dinner for two or a family and friends gathering place. The only thing better than the service is the menu. It’s no secret that Buell Street Bistro is a Brockville treasure. Try the lamb, you won’t believe how good it is! Brockville also offers an abundance of family-style eateries (including Bud’s on the Bay). Pizza? Try Tata’s or 241 Pizza! Something unique? Golden Gate Restaurant or Island Delight, both have great service and good food! How about New Years Eve out on the town? This year The Brockberry is offering a catered 3-course meal being hosted by Maplehurst Manor, a short drive between Brockville and Prescott on Highway #2 East. The Manor is a spectacular heritage home that brings a bit of European glamour to Brockville. Ring in 2013 in style! Contact your favourite restaurant, pub or eatery to see what they offer for New Years Eve. Brockvillians love to eat and we have everything right on your doorstep. The winner of the $100 gift certificate will be announced in January!

Holiday celebrations start at the door and continue throughout your home. Urns full of fresh greenery and flickering lights create a warm welcome for family and friends alike. Take advantage of your home’s space and deck out in style this year. This home has an expansive front porch that beckons visitors to enter. The front foyer had enough room for a tree and with the bonus of a vintage fireplace and mantle - it really creates a warm Holiday greeting for all that enter. Casey the family dog, greets everyone at the front door. Candles flicker and accent this heritage home’s features. An old-fashioned Christmas welcome is easy.

This country home with it’s winding driveway, stone exterior and bold front door suggest a level of sophistication combined with a down-home ambiance. The red accents in the decor blend perfectly with the fresh greenery, copper bows and elements of surprise that make this entry a warm welcome. I’ll be home for Christmas - please drop in!

THEO’GRADYFILES

the

DAY BEFORE

Christmas Submitted by: Monica O’Grady

Twas the day before Christmas, the house was a fog Every creature was stirring, even the dogs Mom hung the stockings – like every year with care, In hopes that this year, they’d think of putting something in there. The boys, thinking “gee, time to wake up”, Maybe Mom made some brunch with a little ketchup. And Dad home from work- says to me with a tap, Just going to lie down for a short little nap. Later out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, Grandma has arrived with some Xmas cookie batter. Bearing gifts, food and some ginger ales, Hooray, another women to help me with these males!

They are dressed all in finery, from their heads to their feet, Not clothes that they would be wearing, walking the streets. A bundle of gifts they had flung in their arms, To place under our tree, on the old Christmas Tree Farm. My eyes-how they twinkled! My nose feeling itchy! |I look at my husband, the pride made us misty! The years that have passed- even since they were ten, Had me looking at our 3 very handsome young men. The tree is lit, all dressed in our best Food in the oven, awaiting our guests. Last check to make sure everything is just right, Happy Christmas to all- and to all a good-night!

The gifts wrapped and carefully placed under the tree, My job is finally done- But they definitely weren’t free. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But not a gift from any others are placed there, I fear With a little bit of prodding, and checking to see, I knew in a moment the Males would soon flee. More rapid than eagles their jackets were on, And they scrambled, and shouted, “we’ll be back by dawn!” “Now Tom! now, Kyle! now, Aidan and Liam Out with a flash and thought nobody would see them! To Downtown, To Sears, and yes the Dollar Store! Now run! Shop away! Buy even more! As the evening gets closer to celebration time, I start calling the cell phones to see if they’re fine So quick in the driveway, the car it just flew, With it full of gifts, and some snack wrappers too. And then, they all separate- in their corners of home The crinkling of wrapping- brought the sound of the Christmas Eve tone. Secluded in the kitchen- as been sequestered there, I take time to relax and sit by the fire, in my rocking chair.

HealthMatters

Smoking a pack a day costs you almost $400 a month & over $4000 each year! Most people find it hard to quit smoking. It can be hard, but it’s not impossible.

BUTT out! If you slip up, don’t give up. Try quitting again.

If you’ve tried quitting smoking before but couldn’t do it, try again. Each time you try, it will get easier. You will be one step closer to quitting for good. Choose a date within the next two weeks to quit. Don’t wait for the “perfect” day – just pick a date and work with it. Put it in your calendar then start making the changes to push smoking out of your everyday life. Stop smoking in the house and in the car and make your house and car smoke-free, so no one is allowed to smoke inside. There are many proven ways to quit smoking. To boost your chances of quitting, choose more than one method. Pick what seems right for you. Each person is different and you’ll know what will work best for you. Going “cold turkey” – quitting spontaneously, on your own - also works well for some people. Some people just decide to quit smoking one day - maybe it’s the day they find out they have a lung disease, or the day their grandchild is born. Maybe there is something else that motivates them. Many people who have quit smoking for good say they quit “cold turkey”. If you think going cold turkey could work for you, try it. On your quit date, butt out completely. Don’t smoke, not even a little. Toss out your cigarettes, other tobacco, and ashtrays. Avoid people and situations where you will be tempted to smoke. If you usually smoke in a certain chair, don’t sit in that chair. If you usually smoke at a nightclub, avoid that nightclub for a while. Change your usual routine, so your new routine doesn’t include smoking. Go for a walk instead of a smoke and be positive. Believe in yourself and your plan. Remember that nicotine withdrawal symptoms only last a short time. Take it one day at a time. Remind yourself that once the withdrawal is over, you’ll feel better than you have in years. Celebrate your success and give yourself credit! Tell people how long you’ve been quit. It’s a major achievement and you should be proud. Consider exercising more. When you’re quitting smoking, exercise can help. Exercise is a healthy alternative to smoking, it can take your mind off your cravings, it can help your mood and energy level, and it can help keep off extra weight. If you are new to exercising, start slowly. A walk around the block is a good start. Quitting smoking gets easier with practice. Every time you try to quit, you boost your chances of quitting for good. Most people who have quit smoking forever had to try 5 or 6 times before they could quit for good. This is normal.

Don’t be discouraged if you slip up, you are not a failure. Try to figure out what the barriers were to your quitting. Were the nicotine cravings too strong? Did you go back to smoking when you were stressed? Talk with your counselor, doctor or pharmacist about your experience. Ask yourself how you can do it differently next time. If you think quit smoking medicines will make it easier for you to quit next time, ask your doctor or pharmacist for their recommendation. Then try quitting again. Keep trying and make 2013 your year to ‘butt out’.

SENIORMATTERS

Beware of the Email Scam

Courtesy of Bayshore Home Health For Canadian seniors with large and dispersed extended families, email may represent an efficient means of keeping in touch. Previous research has found that email users aged 65 and older were more likely to use email to communicate with relatives than all other users. Many seniors feel that it has improved their family connections, and they communicate more frequently with relatives when email is available. But, its not just family who communicate with seniors through email - it’s become an open door for scammers as well. We are all too familiar with the emails pouring into our inbox that promise large sums of money. Although most of us simply hit delete and forget about it, there are some scams that can fool the best of us. Last month I received an email from my bank advising me that someone had tried to access my online banking, I would need to change my password through the provided link. The email was addressed to me, contained the bank’s logo and appeared to be legitimate. I instead forwarded a copy to my bank and was notified this was indeed a scam. There are so many variations to this type of scam that its often difficult to recognize them. Lately, I have been receiving emails that look like statements from service providers (many I do not do business with) notifying me of balances owed and easy online payment links. Seniors are becoming preferred targets for email scammers and there are incidences where they have lost large amounts of their savings.

Email scammers are becoming very innovative. A recent email scam was supposed to be from a couple in Nova Scotia who won a great deal of money in the lottery and were looking to share their windfall with strangers. The email included a link to a news story that offered prove. The lottery win did indeed happen - but the couple were not spreading their wealth. Another popular scam? You get an email message that claims you’ve already won a foreign lottery or an online sweepstakes. The letter may be from a government agency, a bank, a wellknown national company, or a company you never heard of. Regardless of the return address, the only thing between you and your winnings: a check or wire transfer from you to cover taxes, fees, shipping costs, or insurance. What should a senior do to protect themselves from email scammers? The most important thing to remember is never open an email from someone you do not know and never provide any personal or banking information via the internet without the advice of an informed family member or your service provider directly. If you receive an email and are unsure if it is legitimate, contact someone by phone (do not use a contact number or information provided in the email). Seniors who use the internet often are advised to check out the latest scams: http://netforbeginners.about.com/od/ scamsandidentitytheft/ss/top10inetscams.htm (or Google: ‘latest email scams’). The number one rule.... ‘if it sounds too good to be true - it probably is!’
