Floor & Wall Centre Lorrie and Alan Rossetti purchased their business, Floor & Wall Centre in 1990 and from the moment they opened their doors they knew customer service would be one of the most important aspects. “We enjoy working with our customers when choosing the right products to suit their particular style and home decor needs.” says Lorrie, “our staff is experienced and committed to friendly, reliable service whether the job is big or small.” Floor & Wall Centre offers both residential and commercial services that include retail sales and installation of flooring - hardwood, laminate, ceramic, tile, vinyl and carpeting. In addition Floor & Wall Centre carries a complete line of Benjamin Moore paint and Shade-O-Matic window treatments. “We also do complete bathroom renovations”, explains

Alan Rossetti, “We welcome any inquires and will include a free estimate and advise you on the latest innovations and products to suit your lifestyle. Floor & Wall Centre has an experienced team of in-house expert installers to complete your renovation project.” Alan has been in the business for twenty-five years and brings a wealth of experience. Marty McCaw, store manager since 1995 and expert installer, Bill Casselman who joined the company in 1992, share in over thirty years of experience. “We take pride in every job and will stand behind the work and products, that’s why our company motto is “where quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten”. It’s important to offer not only the best possible product, but the best service as well.” The quality of their jobs is very evident, one notable
job is the Fox Run Retirement Home in Gananoque. Completed in 2008, Floor & Wall Centre created a beautiful and functional environment for residents and visitors. The attention to detail is evident throughout with custom inlay designs incorporated in the carpet and tile installations. “With the latest innovations in home decor and new products being offered, our customers can be assured we can find the perfect choice for your home renovation needs. Combine that with great service, and we know you’ll think of the Floor & Wall Centre for all your home decor needs.” Maybe their customers say it best: “Just like you and Al, Bill and I own and operate a small business in Brockville. We know what it is takes to make a living based solely on your hard work and reputation. And you have done an excellent job at that. I guess we have known you for over 20 years now and have come to you over those years with many and varied decorating requests. You have always been friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. Even when you weren’t sure about a product, you made sure to get the information we needed in order to make our decisions. And I want to thank Marty as well for his attention and friendliness. We have been so pleased with the work you have done at our home and have never hesitated to recommend you to our family and friends. I believe that you follow the same philosophy as we have in our business which is that service is really our number one product. Thank you very much and continued success.” Bonnie Burgess “Thank you for my new floor! It was a pleasure working with Floor & Wall from start to finish. We would recommend you to anyone and we will! Thanks so much.” Sincerely Linda

Kid’s Korner By Constance Deir
When parents decide it’s time for a child to get his or her own bedroom, that child’s reaction is often one of immense joy. However, as parents soon discover, planning a child’s bedroom can be difficult. It needs to
K
have function, style and above-all organization.
Kid’s interests change as quickly as they grow. When spending money on decorating their bedrooms every time a new theme comes out can be very costly. So how do you go from bunnies to Dora to Hannah Montana in the space of a couple of years? Start with long lasting basics such as the furniture. A good quality mattress should be the first piece you invest in, when your child is a toddler and no longer requires a crib, spend the money for a great mattress. Talk to your mattress retailer, choose a mattress that will accommodate them from toddler to teen and don’t skimp on quality. Twin, single, double or queen? If you have the space get a queen or double, it will allow your child to grow into the mattress and could very well last until they go off to college, or when they do leave home, it could become a guest room. The bed frame is the next choice you need to make, why not go ‘vintage’? You can purchase a great wooden bed that can be painted or refinished as your child’s décor changes. A bright pink bed for your three-yearold can be stripped and stained for your teenager. Measure the bed frame before you make your choice as most antique beds were not

available in sizes larger than a double, but a good carpenter can adjust many. If the bed you have your heart set on just won’t fit, consider using the headboard by itself and a quality metal bed frame. Keep all the extra pieces such as the footboard and rails - especially if the bed is an antique, the value will be affected if the bed is incomplete. You can find the perfect piece at a second-hand store or antique shop for any budget. Additional furniture that should be included in your child’s room; a desk, book shelves and of course a dresser or wardrobe. When choosing bookshelves ensure they are safely secured to the wall and at a height your child can reach. Shelves can be adjusted as your toddler grows and will be the perfect place to put not only books, but also all the other things that usually end up scattered around your child’s bedroom. Use baskets and other storage options for smaller items like toys, blocks and craft supplies, your child will enjoy keeping things organized. Having a desk and chair in your child’s bedroom is a great addition if you have the space. With many kids owning computers you need a sturdy place to set it up and a good desk will be the perfect ‘homework’ centre as they grow. A dresser or wardrobe is your next purchase and it can any style you desire, once again consider a vintage piece. Paint it to match the bed or keep the original wood finish, it will last for years. Now that you have the basic pieces it’s time to indulge in some personal decorating. Have fun with paint and wall coverings and fabric choices. Here’s where you can incorporate Dora! Bed linens, pillows and window treatments can be purchased with your child’s favorite ‘hero’ and can easily be
changed when trends come and go. When you purchase ‘character-themed’ sheet sets, buy an extra set, with just a few stitches you can make matching curtains and accent pillows. Several items I would recommend are a big comfy chair, a perfect place to cuddle with your toddler and your teenager will appreciate a spot to read and study and an area rug. Upholstery fabrics have come a long way, they are easier to clean and will last through childhood right to the college dorm, the same goes for an area rug. Finish the décor with lamps, accessories and artwork, frame your child’s artwork and really personalize the room or choose artwork that will fit into a changing decor and can be kept for years. Have fun decorating your child’s room, make it a special place for them as they grow into adults and who knows, maybe they’ll even keep it clean. Thank you to Reliable Furniture for the images of the wardrobe, lamp and framed print
Have fun with your accessories. Like this great lamp - fun & functional.

If I had my child to raise all over again, I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later. I’d finger-paint more, and point the finger less. I would do less correcting and more connecting. I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes. I’d take more hikes and fly more kites. I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play. I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars. I’d do more hugging and less tugging. ~Diane Loomans, from “If I Had My Child To Raise Over Again”
Positive Parenting I recently purchased a new cell phone, it came neatly packed in a box with all the appropriate accessories including a lengthy and detailed instruction manual. It made me realize that everything comes with instructions – these manuals even have a special section dedicated to ‘trouble-shooting’ common problems you might encounter. Instructions – what a wonderful concept, a step-by-step set of rules to ensure the proper use of an unfamiliar item. As the parent of two, my only thought, why don’t children come with instructions? I recall the moment when I graduated to the role of parent, there was no manual hidden among the folds of the blanket, no special classes dedicated to the task of raising a happy, responsible adult from this tiny starting point that clutched my finger and captured my heart. Just the assurance that it would come natural, I’d learn from my mistakes and my mother’s passing words, you’ll know what to do… Honestly? Being a parent is scary! We’ve all encountered moments when we wonder – what am I doing wrong? Why does my two-year-old bite the dog, why won’t my teenager talk to me or why do my kids fight constantly? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to open a manual and find the solution? Parenting for dummies? Parenting requires a learning process; it involves caring for, protecting, teaching and guiding children and young people. However, being a good parent doesn’t always come natural and it doesn’t ‘just happen’. As a parent you are influenced by your own parents, your life experiences, opinions of relatives and friends and what you see in the media. To complicate things further, throw in your unique family situation. Everything affects your parenting skills and ability; stress, demands associated with work, health concerns, and even your financial and relationship

status. Single parents are required to fulfil all parenting roles. Common parenting traps include the following; the negative parent trap which involves getting into power struggles with children, the ‘leave them alone’ trap which occurs when good behaviour is ignored, the ‘perfect parent’ trap (which often is apparent with single parent families) here the parent tries to be perfect rather than just good or competent, struggling to achieve the ‘perfect parent’ status can only lead to added stress and disappointment. The ‘perfect child’ trap is unrealistic, all children whine, complain and make mistakes; this is the natural course of development. Other common ‘traps’ include; the ‘it’s all my fault’, ‘it’s all their fault’, the ‘martyr, and of the ‘for the sake of the children’. Being a good parent involves the ability to recognize the problems and find solutions before they develop into situations. How can we, as parents, do this? Have realistic expectations of both yourself, your partner and your children. Remind yourself that every parent makes mistakes and learns as they go. Enjoy your child. In a busy family it’s easy to get caught up in the demands of work, school, and everyday life. Take time each day to spend with your child, talk about their day, get to know your child’s friends and activities. Look after yourself! Never forget how important it is to take care of your own needs, start with just a half hour a day doing something you enjoy. Do not argue or fight in front of your children, it can leave a lasting impression on them, teaching them improper methods of dealing with conflict as they grow up. Above all, get support when offered or needed. Family and
friends can often see a positive solution to a situation, if you find yourself facing problems you can’t sort out at home seek advice from community groups or organizations. Brockville has some wonderful support groups for families encountering difficulties with parenting.
to play a video game or watch their favourite TV show, but they will appreciate the interest you show. It’s vital that your teenager feels comfortable talking to you, if they encounter issues that upset or confuse them they are more likely to seek your advice.
Working parents are faced with added stress, especially with the recent economic strife. Most families in this area have two working parents. It’s a reality that a single income household most often won’t allow for financial security. The competitive job market compels many to commit to extra hours and this is important time spent away from the family. As parents it’s important to maintain a level of balance between parenting and work, not as easy as it sounds? It can be, but it will take cooperation from you, your partner and the children. Try to set time aside when the family can participate in an activity together, even if that means having dinner together, watching a movie or shopping for groceries once or twice a week.
Keep in contact with your teenager’s teachers or student counsellor throughout the school year. Developing a good relationship with other adults that interact with your teen can be very helpful, they may be in a position to alert you to potential situations before they become critical. It’s vital that you don’t ‘hand-off’ your parenting responsibility to someone else, they should only be used as a support system, you need to be the parent!
Being organized and having a routine can alleviate stress in the household. If the children know they have certain tasks at particular times of the day - everyday, it won’t require you, as a parent to play catch - up should you be running behind schedule due to work. Personally, I find nothing more exhausting than arriving home from the office to discover my daughter has not completed her chores or homework, it creates stress as I rush around to help her finish everything before my husband arrives home. I’ve learned that setting ground rules regarding homework and chores completed prior to Internet or T.V. time eliminates stress for both myself and my daughter. It’s vital to work with your partner if conflict arises - a home runs smoothy if you and your partner enforce the same rules and use the same methods of discipline. You and your partner may need to set time aside to discuss any disagreements you may have regarding the children. It’s important to show a united front when dealing with issues. Parenting has different challenges depending on the age of your children, dealing with younger children is very different than teenagers or young adults. Having a small baby or toddler in the home might require arranging child care while you work, a higher level of interaction and dealing with the typical issues all parents are faced with; such as, tantrums, picky eaters, separation problems and trouble with bedtime. Young children may not understand that you had a bad day at work and have difficulty getting excited about the painting of the cow that now adorns your living room wall, done in a blue Sharpie. Parenting is a constant series of surprises. Take each one in stride and never forget how important you are to your children. Teenage children come with an entirely new set of ‘experiences’. The child who used to rush to greet you everyday hasn’t come out of their room for two days and the only way you’re sure they are home is if a pair of muddy shoes are at the front door and the sink full of dirty dishes. The most important thing to remember is - you too were once a teenager, although that thought can be frightening. Talk to your teenager, get to know who their friends are and what they like to do for fun. Yes, it may require you
Enjoy your children no matter what age they are, there comes a time when they grow up, develop lives of their own and forget to call you on your birthday. Sorry Mom! The tips and much of the content for this editorial was derived from the Triple P (Positive Parenting Program). Every Kid in Our Communities of Leeds and Grenville generates positive change for children and their families by bringing together key players from our communities, including those who may not have previously engaged due to agency or professional boundaries. Under the coalition of Every Kid In Our Communities is Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) The Positive Parenting Program, dubbed Triple P, connects families with practitioners in their local community who can provide a range of support and advice for parents on how to address the many different phases children go through from infancy to the teenage years. The program focuses on helping parents make a big difference by making small changes in how they connect with their children. It is a source of support for parents that offer print resources, one-on-one sessions and group programs. 1-800-660-5853 www.everykid.on.ca www.triplep.net

Playing to Learn
YMCA Playing to Learn provides an understanding of how play provides the foundation for learning and provides early educators with the skills to prepare spaces that are more conducive to learning, and the best practices to encourage quality learning experiences. Your child does all the things your child wants to do. There will be story time - time to play with blocks - opportunities to count and compare - to make pictures, to sing and to makebelieve. They will experience the world. They will explore and investigate.
YMCA Playing to Learn is a national curriculum that helps children in YMCA licensed pre-school child care discover learning through creative play and aligns with primary school benchmarks. It is a curriculum we have been developing and implementing over the past three years. The theoretical basis for this curriculum is wellknown and accepted. It is based on what we, as child care professionals, know; true play is the way children learn, and true play provides adults with insight into what a child – at that particular moment in time – is capable of learning. What is new is the framework and structure the YMCA is putting in place to train early childhood educators. This is, in and of itself, an exciting development. We are providing our early childhood educators with the opportunity to further their own education and skill at nurturing the development of young children.

Together We Can Value Every Kid.
Your child plays to learn. We have known for a very long time that child’s play provides the foundations for language and literacy; for mathematics, science and technology; and for the arts. It is the type of play opportunities provided at the YMCA that determines what your child learns. YMCA educators support parents by; providing a safe environment your child, preparing spaces that are more conducive to learning, carefully watching to determine what your child is capable of learning, actively participating in your child’s play experiences and observing and documenting the milestones in your child’s life to ensure age appropriate development. Through this program, your child’s early educator is more attentive, more involved and more aware of how your child is developing and what your child is learning. The Brockville and Area YMCA is thrilled to have adopted YMCA Playing to Learn, as it delivers on our promise to continuously improve the quality of programs and services we provide for children. This curriculum combines three decades of experience in child care delivery, with the latest body of knowledge on how the brain develops and how children learn. We believe YMCA Playing to Learn is the best approach to ensure a child’s continued enthusiasm and capacity for life-long learning. Submitted by: Brockville and Area YMCA

On March 29, 2010, Off the Wall is holding an event called “Voices for Youth”. This event is promoting not only the centre itself, but the partnerships in the community that it has. Our goal is to ensure that there is multiple levels of programming offered to youth in the community, and that the community is aware of all resources it can tap into. The Invitations have been sent out to multiple agencies that are related to youth, whether it is through Justice Systems, Community Centres, or Health Agencies. The purpose is to provide the community, schools, agencies and parents to become more informed about what is out there for our youth, build on our current programming, fill in the gaps, and bridge our strengths together. Off the Wall has been around since the early 1990’s, and has evolved and served many youth in its times. It has been held by the CMHA for purposes of interest in ensuring that we have something for youth in the community that can provide a safe and secure

Among Canadian women, breast cancer continues to be the most frequently diagnosed cancer and is the second leading cause of cancer mortality among women.
Pictured here during the 2009 ‘Walk’ in Ottawa are (L-R) are Carolyn Moffatt, Margaret Wilcox, Mary Jane Leslie and Erica Leslie.
Beauty & The Breast Breast cancer has an impact on a lot of people either on a personal level or with family and friends. Breast cancer can strike anyone. Mary Jane Leslie joined the Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™ benefiting Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation for the first time in 2006. “I have walked three times, my daughter Erica and sister Carolyn have walked twice and another sister was able to join us last year for the first time after overcoming breast cancer herself. We will all be walking again this year.” Explained Mary Jane Leslie. During one amazing weekend, June 5 - 6, 2010, thousands will join together to walk in the battle against all women’s cancers. It’s a massive undertaking, and that’s why your participation is more critical than ever. The Weekend was built upon the courageous efforts of people just like you, transforming a small grass roots effort into one of Canada’s biggest difference-making endeavours for all women.

Your support will fund the critical work of Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation and their efforts to end breast and gynaecologic cancers, diseases that one in seven Canadian women will be diagnosed with in her lifetime. “Women from the Brockville area experiencing breast cancer can receive treatment at hospitals funded by the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.” Says Mary Jane, “Walking 60 kms is little suffering compared to what thousands of women experience every year who are diagnosed with cancer. Having the privilege of walking among over 1,000 other people, many of which are cancer survivors, leaves us wanting to continue to help in our small way to raise awareness.” Together women can help impact the lives of thousands throughout Ottawa and across Canada; each step that we take leads us closer to a cure for both breast and gynaecologic cancers. One Weekend truly can make a lifetime of difference— join us in our efforts to Cure One, Cure All.
Join The Weekend and you’ll be fully-supported as you travel some of Ottawa’s most beautiful areas with regular Pit Stops, hydration stations, medical attention (should you need it) and cheering crowds applauding you along. Day One culminates in an overnight camp out complete with catered meals, hot showers, massage and entertainment. After a good night’s rest, you will embark on the final leg of your journey. The Weekend culminates as the community rallies to welcome your arrival, followed by the emotional Closing Ceremonies, a celebration of your amazing accomplishment in the fight to end all women’s cancers! As a 2-Day Walker, you’ll commit to walking 60km over the course of one amazing weekend and raising at least $2000 for the critical work of Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. New 1-Day Distance: As a 1-Day Walker, you’ll commit to walking the first half of The Weekend and raising at least $1250 for the critical work of Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. 1-Day Walkers will enjoy the same support as 2-Day Walkers, but your Weekend will come to an end at Camp on Day One where you’ll arrive to a hero’s welcome and enjoy all of the well-deserved amenities including massage, dinner, and entertainment at Camp. In order to raise the required $8000 entry fee for the four women; Mary Jane, Carolyn, Margaret and Erica host an event to raise the funds, thanks to the help of the local business community. “This will be the third time hosting our fund raiser, called ‘Beauty and the Breast’. Last year’s event was sold out and we hope to do so again this year and reach our goal of raising $11,000 for the foundation to end all women’s cancer. This event presents an opportunity for us to gather together for an evening of fun and good food and contribute to supporting this important cause. The tremendous energy and support from this community are the key to making Beauty & the Breast a success.” Those community business who have generously offered to assist us this year are; Lynn Candish and Peter Hoogendam of The River Mill Restaurant (donating the use of the restaurant), Lynn Libbos and her daughter, Chelsea of Echo Clothing Co. (hosting a fun fashion show), Jennifer and Jack Henderson of The Flower Shop Reg’d (donating gifts for the volunteers), Marilyn Gill and Marlene Neddo of Colonial Flowers (donating the table accents), Sam Crosby of The Bread of Life Dance Theatre (choreographing a dance performance during the evening), and 70 local businesses, industries and companies who donated items for the silent auction. As well, three additional local businesses; Shopper’s Drug Mart (1000 Islands Mall & King St. locations), and The Keary Team are sponsoring the cost of the 128 dinners enabling the total $50/ticket price to be donated to the cause.
Group photo: A large group of people came together and in unison ‘got physical’ in an impromptu exercise session at St. Laurent Shopping Centre to kickoff the brand new Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™ that will benefit the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.
Beauty & the Breast takes place on May 3rd, 2010. Tickets are $50 (a tax receipt will be provided for the full amount). To order your ticket and support this great event contact Mary Jane Leslie at 613-345-2008 or Echo Clothing Co. located on King Street West, Downtown Brockville.

Mini Implants
per person*
If
you have struggled with the discomfort and looseness of dentures, mini implants may be the answer you’ve been looking for. Mini Dental Implants are proving to be the most significant advancement in Implant Dentistry. This new technology offers a simple and affordable approach to securing dentures. The mini implant is made of titanium and acts like the root of a tooth that has been lost and as a retaining fixture for a denture to secure on to. The head of the implant is shaped like a ball and the retaining fixture on the denture acts like a socket that contains an O-ring. The O-ring snaps over the ball and the denture is secured. Ideally to secure a denture 4-6 implants need to be placed and spaced about 5 mm apart. There are a couple differences between a regular implant and mini implant. The first being size. The mini implant is thinner however length is relatively the same. The procedure of placing a mini implant is done in one short visit of one to two hours versus the regular implant that is completed in two stages over a period of 4-6 months. The best difference is the price. Mini Implants are significantly cheaper than regular implants. The most effective use of the mini implant is to stabilize a lower denture however, they can be used for an upper denture and in some cases are being used in crown and bridge work. This is a painless and fast procedure that is done in the dental practice. Mini Dental Implants have many benefits including being able to eat and speak with confidence, eat foods you have not eaten in years, no longer need adhesives or pastes, and you will have improved bone retention and overall general good nutrition. Call your dental provider today to see if you are a suitable candidate for mini dental implants and improve your quality of life today. Dentistry@Brockville www.DentistryAtBrockville.ca
