Letter from the editor I can smell the pumpkin goop. It’s time for crunchy leaves, warm drinks, and Halloween everything. October is one of the only months when I’m not wishing for summer. The word itself brings back fond memories of corn mazes, hay rides, and dressing up. In my opinion, the beginning of fall is the easiest time to celebrate the season. Eat an apple. Read some Edgar Allan Poe. Put on a sweater. Done. You didn’t even have to buy anyone a gift. Yet at the end of the month I always find that there is something I forgot to en-

joy. Bake a pie. Carve a pumpkin and roast the seeds. Watch the Charlie Brown Halloween Special. Take a hike with a friend to just enjoy the colors. Wear every sweater in your closet. Bake some pumpkin cookies. Don’t know how? We got you covered. I’m probably even missing some activities in this list, but my point is to enjoy the season. Yeah, you can do any of those things whenever you want, but it’s about the sparkle. Push back your seasonal depression until January folks, it’s Halloween time.

DIY backpack pin Danielle ledoux Supplies:

Pins

Markers

Shrink paper

Paint

Scissors

Glue gun

Paint brush

Varnish (optional)

Step One Draw your pin design on a piece of paper about three times as large as you would like your finished pin. I find it easiest to do this on notebook paper so I can use the lines to measure. Step Two Trace your design on to the shrink paper and color it in. The color will look very light at first but it will darken after you bake it. Cut out your design. Step Three Place your pin on some tin foil on a baking sheet and place in the oven for about three minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Baking times may vary so be sure to watch it as you go. What will happen is it will crumple up and then flatten out as it shrinks. Remove

from the oven about 15-20 seconds after flattening. If it’s not as flat as you wanted you can pat it down with the bottom of a glass when you take it out of the oven. Step Four After cooled, paint the back of your pin in white to give it a more vibrant color on the front. Spray paint would probably work best, but I used acrylics and a brush and mine came out just fine. Step Five (optional) Spray your pin with varnish. If you, want you can do two coats, but let it dry in between. Make sure that when you spray your pin you’re not too close, or the colors will run. Step Six Glue on the pin.

inktober Each October artists break out their pens and brushes to take on the Inktober Challenge. The idea is that for each day of October you create a Halloween themed ink drawing. Here’s a list of prompts to get you started! You don’t have to draw for each day and it doesn’t have to be ink, but it’s a fun way to improve your skills in whatever medium you prefer. If you use any prompts be sure to post your piece on Instagram and tag us @ingenuezine.
