LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

First off, I’d like to say that as much as I enjoy making this magazine, education is important, and I have exams coming up. With that said, Ingenue will be taking a hiatus in December and will be coming back at the beginning of 2018. Still be sure to check out our website and Instagram for information about contributing. I could do without November. It’s dark, the leaves are gone, I’m not ready to be bound to the indoors but there’s no reason to be outside, and everyone starts talking about Christmas too early. It’s only a single month though. It’s just thirty days where you gotta focus on doing what you gotta do to get through it. Back to basics.

Every year I try to get through November the best I can. I drink more water than usual (which I should really do all the time), I take really good care of my skin, I do more yoga, and I make more of an effort to put my phone down. It can make me feel a little better about how hard it is to get out of bed in the dark or going to work without any makeup on my dark circles. Not feeling your best but still doing your best is an accomplishment. I don’t like November, but I like the feeling of coming out of it and feeling just fine.

DISCLAIMER: SMARTPHONES ARE USEFUL AND A GOOD INVENTION AND I’M NOT AGAINST TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS

I don’t mean to sound like every old person you’ve ever spoken to but hey. Distractions suck. I’m not trying to call anyone out, this is my personal experience and maybe someone will relate. If I have a moment in my day when I’m not sure what I should be doing, my phone will come out and I’ll waste away a little bit. I’ll scroll for a little too long on the Instagram explore page, or continually refresh Snapchat and VSCO. Once I realize it’s already been twenty minutes I’ll tell myself Ill close the app in five minutes. After six minutes, “oh I missed the five-minute mark,” and go for another five. Honestly, I don’t even enjoy seeing the same meme seven times from all different accounts. All I’m saying is sometimes it’s nice to put your phone on do not disturb and go sit with your dog or go outside and walk through the puddles.

MEMORIAL FOR MURDERED JEWS IN EUROPE, BERLIN DAHLIA ROBERTS

Being an architecture student, the quote “less is more” by Mies van der Rohe becomes more than a famous phrase by a famous architect. “Less is more” becomes a learning tool, a basis for our design work and an understanding of architecture, urban planning, and other designing. This idea of “less is more” becomes the basis of the Memorial for Murdered Jews in Europe. Architect Peter Eisenman used an element called stela, which is a standing block (in this case made of concrete) normally for the purpose of a gravestone. There total a whopping 2711 stelae laid in a geometric grid. By simplifying the memorial down to blocks, varying in heights, with a monotone grey color, and a regular grid system this simplified execution in relation to a varying topography allows each visitor the chance to have their own personal experience.

go; the sun is out; the night sky is above you; the temperature is warm; it is snowing… the list can go on. Each small element that can change, while these stelae stay the same in this simplified grid, changes your experience.

The architectural design aside, this memorial is very unique. The simplification and abstraction allows this space to become unique to each person. I personally have gone there two times already, each time with a different reaction and feeling in the space. Sometimes it feels different because of taking a different path; or maybe because a different number of people there; perhaps you bump into someone; someone lets you

“Hope is being able to see that there is a light despite all the darkness.”

What makes this beautiful to me is that this is exactly how one should experience a memorial for remembering the Holocaust. Each person or family involved in the Holocaust had a different experience even if only one element separated them from another family. To me, this memorial not only captures the despair of those affected by the Holocaust but allow people to start to understand the feelings of those affected. By doing this, it allows people to empathize and reflect. This is the first step to being able to accept and embrace this tragic past and move forward to a brighter future.

-Desmond Tutu For those who were murdered or affected by the Holocaust, I am one light of millions in the sky who will remember. Each of these lights will shine down on you at night when the sun has fallen until the next day. The future is bright.
