MODEL

ONJAYLA ANDERSON @JAYLA.A.E. PHOTO BY @PERRYPHOTOWORKS @JAYLA.A.E. I’m an American photographer living in Fukuoka, Japan. I’ve been in Japan for almost 12 years (two and a half of those as a photographer) and one of the things I’ve noticed here is that “cute” is really popular culturally especially with Japanese photographers. Many portraits involve women looking as cute, childlike and demure as possible. That’s not something that’s ever really resonated

InPiece | February 2020 | 8

with me, perhaps it’s my American-ness or the fact that I grew up around pretty strong women in my family. With this shoot I wanted to portray a confident young “boss lady in the city” vibe and I believe the model, Onjayla exudes this covanfidence in spades. In addition, I wanted to highlight just a little bit of the backstreets and main areas of the downtown area in the city we live in, Fukuoka.

@MIRIAM_SAPIENZA_

What is your name and how old are you? I am Emanuela Sapienza and I am 23 years old! For 4 months I graduated in photography from the University of Catania. Tell us about home. Did it inf luence your photography? I am an Italian woman. I was born and raised on a wonderful island ,Sicily. Actually I live in Germany, to work as a photographer and for study. Living in

another context and in a new land, allows me to see things in a different way. I am very tied to Italy and I believe that somehow my photography has always been influenced by my origins. What are your main inf luences in photography? I love minimalism, surrealism,and I am very fascinated by the 80s fashion Photograph,americans photography,and Herbert List, my photography style is a mix of experiences and thoughts.

InPiece | February 2020 | 25

PHOTO BY @EMANUELASAPIENZA_ @_OLGA_MICA Can you tell us what your approach or goal was when you took this photo?(Photo to the right)

Is there any project you are working on that we should keep an eye on?

Something absolutely splendid happened at that moment, the girl was there in front of me, and I felt it was the right time to take a photo. Henri CartierBresson said that “Taking pictures is putting on the same line of sight head, eye and heart “and that’s exactly what happened at that moment, that light, the sun, that white skin, the silence, it was the exact moment to take the picture!

For a few months I have been working on a very ambitious and very long project, which has to do with a large fashion brand, I want to find the key to propose fashion with the unusual and simplicity. I’m not going to tell you exactly what it is right now, but I’m really excited about this project, so let’s hope so!

“if you insist and persist, reach and conquer” Each person deserves to enjoy his goals, but determination is the right way!

I wanted to try more editorial style photos to go along with the black and white theme. I took these with my friend Alyx who was one of the first people I did real shoots with when I started portrait photography a few years ago. On the way to our location which we’ve shot at many times before, I realized it was taking longer than I expected and we were passing places I hadn’t seen before. As a joke, Alyx said “What if we went to the wrong place?”, and

InPiece | February 2020 | 58

I realized somehow we ended up half an hour past our intended location. Even though we were in a random location and the weather forecast wasn’t looking great we made the best of our situation and took some of my favorite pictures ever. Two years ago, we started doing this for fun, but now looking at the progress we’ve made makes me excited for the future. -KYLA COTE

THE PROCESS TO BLACK & WHITE FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY WRITTEN BY: MARIENNA RATHGEBER

Marienna is a new InPiece team member, with a deep passion for fashion, photography, and the arts. In this article, she goes over how we should approach black and white fashion photography. She goes over the entire step by step process at completely dominating your black and white fashion photoshoot. Many beginner photographers usually will do a color shoot and then after convert the photos with black and white filters. The gurus know to start out in black and white, through concept, and through a specific process. There are many things you can do throughout the process that can really help you achieve amazing photos when working in monochrome alone. Black and white photos can be exceptionally engaging and breathtaking. So what can you do to visualize and create outstanding black and white images? Here are just some of the most important steps to the whole process.

Imagining In Black And White It’s true what they say, when you shoot a model in color, you are simply shooting their clothes, but the model’s soul gets captured when you shoot them in black and white. Color might be everything to some people, but black and white is so much more. Anyone can take a photo, but a photographer with enough passion can see the photo before it is even taken. That is what black and white photography is about, imagining the image before you capture it. Black and white photos are just so fascinating because they are deeper and more striking than the colored ones. They cut straight to the chase and do not distract us with colors. They are timeless and of classic quality. They can serve as a way of recalling the past and have earned their place in history of the popular imagination. Training your eyes to start seeing in black and white will help with creating stunning images.

@LORETTAPATRICKPHOTO @PRESLEYDEGRAEVE

InPiece | February 2020 | 62

Before shooting, you will need to learn how to visualize in black in white. It may take a little practice, but it truly is the key to curating an amazing black and white shoot. By default, we already see, think, and dream in color. But when it comes to black and white photography,

Choosing The Right Model

@A.VAUGHNER_ADVENTURES

we must start seeing in black and white in our minds as well. It takes a special and unique kind of eye, one that looks at the depths, contrast, tones, composition, and textures rather than colors. When you imagine in black and white it helps keep your vision more clear. When you keep your vision clear, it will also help you to direct your model and other team members while shooting. You will want to imagine a strong concept for your shoot and be able to clearly visualize it to get the best results.

The connection between you and your subject is probably the most overlooked aspect of any shoot. Most fashion photography is all about making the model look as good as possible. However, when done well, black and white photography can emphasize your model’s emotions and bring out so much more beauty in them.

@ RCL_PORTRAITS

Models who have strong expressions will excel in black and white photoshoots. You will want to work with models who can deeply express emotion through their eyes alone, and can accentuate their mood with their facial features and animations. If the black and white shoot you are planning consists of high contrast, you will also want to choose a model with impeccable skin. Contrasty edits will bring out everything that is going on in the skin.

@TALIA.G_

Your model’s posing should be natural, moody, and expressive. Ask your model to move, ask them to think about a time they were happiest, a time they were most sad. Have them think about their favorite person, or a person who broke their heart. This way you can really capture those deep emotions. Your photo becomes more than a photo, it becomes a poem. It becomes art. It is also best to choose models that have unique features and a rare presence.

Using The Right Makeup Artist

@JOLIE.DIANE

You will want to work with makeup artists who are experienced with black and white photoshoots. Applying makeup for black and white photography is a lot different than color photography. It must be applied thicker, and the pigments chosen must bring out the most contrast. Makeup colors that should be focused on using are blacks, whites and grays. If your MUA is inexperienced it could take some time to get the makeup just right for your shoot. You will also want to test lighting with your model’s makeup before shooting because different kinds of makeup will respond differently to certain types of lighting. Ideally you will need time to check on these things and adjust accordingly

InPiece | February 2020 | 63

before your shoot time. Makeup can be done specific to the type of mood you want to capture and what you want your viewers to feel when looking at your photos.

Choosing The Stylist You will want to work with a stylist who will use clothing and accessory pieces that stand out due to their cuts, shapes, and textures. It is best to also use clothing and items that are black, white, or gray. However, if you already know what kind of color filter you will be using in post processing, then you can also use color to your advantage. If you have not ever done that before though, you will want some practice first. You can do some practice shoots with some various colored items, and then use different filters in them on post. This goes for makeup as well. You may be extremely impressed with how your photos come out after.

The Perfect Lighting

@TUCKERJOENZ @PAIGEDANIELLE___

The lighting you use in your black and white photography doesn’t necessarily need to be much different than the lighting you use for your color photography. You will want to pay attention to where the shadows fall in your shots, the quality of the drop off, and how all of the tones are blending into one another. These will all stand out much more in a black and white photograph. It is perfectly ok to start out with your normal lighting set up and then adjust it from there. If you haven’t ever shot black and white instudio fashion photography before it is fine. You can start by using a simple two-light set-up using a strip light for a fill. You can also simply place a grid in the strip light if you want more dramatic shadows. Following this process before your black and white photo shoot will go a long way towards landing you beautiful images. You will want to imagine and visualize a strong concept, choose the best model, experienced makeup artist, the right wardrobe, and perfect lighting set up for your shoot. Prepping this way will ensure your photos are also set up for a simple conversion process. In the end, all of these components will have you on the right track to an amazing photoshoot that will produce even more amazing shots. Black and white photography truly is a timeless art form you can learn, practice, and become passionate and great at by following the process to it all. Remember, you do not just take a photograph - you create it. - InPiece Mebmber: MARIENNA RATHGEBER

These photos were taken on on a cruise ship around several different islands in the Caribbean. I don’t like to lock myself into any one style. I love it all, pretty, modster, vintage, schoolgirl, any style. That is the fun of fashion. Also when away, I think its important not to dress the part. (for example typical tropical colors at the beach, sarongs and bikinis)‌ its time to think outside the box, drop the tourist look and pay attention to whats inside. I like to ask myself what do I really feel like today and let it show. I believe these photos portray different feelings, different eras, different styles that through a collaborative effort felt right. -LORETTA PATRICK
