On this journey, we met a photographer, Detavius (@Kneeblack). Detavius took some portraits of me, both digital and film. He shared with us his point-of-view on film photography. For the longest time, I have been wanting to learn, but I was afraid of failing. Our conversation inspired me to give it a try.

ALEXIS ZOLLER

I have been modeling for four years now and decided to find creativity on the other side of the camera. As a 19 year old model and photographer, I have learned so much and made such amazing friends. I’ve only been taking photos for a year now and I hope to continue learning every day. I owe it all to my family, friends, and mentors who have supported me along the way! -Alexis

For this set, I used fake snow blankets to create a backdrop. I wanted it to be very monochromatic and coordinated so that was the inspiration for the neutral oversized sweaters and socks. I wanted a very cozy vibe so for editing I went with a muted warm look. On the same day I also wanted to try a more editorial look but my photo partner fell asleep by the time I finished my makeup. Another challenge I encountered was the fluctuations in the lighting as these were taken in a dorm living room with just natural window light. This shoot inspired me to look into buying professional lighting equipment to learn more about studio photography.

- Tell us about your background… where are you from and what inspired you to do photo and video? - Of course! I am originally from Jacksonville Florida. I grew up there most of my life, I was born in California. But, raised in Florida. I always had a camera. I remember when I was ten years old making horror movies with my friends as well as action movies with Nerf guns. Always had a video camera on hand. I never took it anywhere or did anything serious with it. I just thought it was fun. And then.. going towards high-school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do in life. But then I noticed I was always taking photos and nothing else. Thats when I started thinking, maybe this is something serious, something more than a hobby. This could be my job, a career. From there I got my first camera, “Canon Rebel but before that I was taking photos with an iPhone 6. Thats when it all started, an iPhone, my vision and the creativity went from there. - How long have you been shooting for and how long did it take you to develop your style? - I’ve been doing photography professionally for about two years and videography only 6 months.

@HANNAH.BUBB - Is there a quote you live by? -”If they aren’t laughing at your dream, your dream isn’t big enough.” When I started doing photography and videography I always told people I was going to be professional at it and thats what I was going to be doing for my life. A lot of people did laugh and doubted me. Just having that in my head drove me everyday to get better at my craft. That quote

@CHASESPANOS

- What do you consider success in the photography and video industry? - Honestly, is to the point you are financially free and your job is doing what you love. I am blessed to have a lifestyle where I can make a living from doing what I love. My job is strictly with my camera and my vision. Success it doesn’t necessarily mean you get a lot of clients. As long as you are making money living and doing what you love, thats the meaning of success. I am not at a point I want to be yet. But I am very blessed and happy to be in the spot I am right now.

- What does your work aim to say? - Showing off what my potential is and showing how look at things. As a photographer I always wanted to be different and unique from every other creator. I feel that implementing my graphic design skills and my photographic skills as a hybrid mix of my work. It shows that I can do more than just photography. And my photos show my lifestyle and what I go through every day. I want to share that everyday with the people who follow me.

STEVEN W. ADAMS Photographer: @swestaxo

So the first photo is from a series I shot for a show curated by Khalil Osborne about a year and a half back. The theme of that shoot was more or less the subversion of black masculinity. This shot I think stands out amongst he series because it’s one of the few in which the face/upper body of one subject is not the sole focus. Instead the composition consist of fragments of three different body’s. At the time we were shooting this I wanted to temporarily deviate from what we were doing and experiment with how much could be expressed without using the face, with just body language, something I’m beginning to explore more and more in my work.

InPiece | December 2019 | 50

InFilm

Basically after a long hiatus I wanted to do something outside my comfort zone. I tended to do traditional portraiture but I wanted to see how much could be expressed with just the body. I kinda wanted to challenge myself to avoid depending on the familiarity of a beautiful face to ground the work. Deviating from my comfort zone in another way was using a much narrower angle lens as a means of sort of fragmenting the subject so that the focus is the abstract simplicity of their parts instead of the familiarity of the whole body. The same reason why I choose (and am choosing for a while) to shoot primarily in black and white. To keep focus on the composition. I also kind of wanted to deal with the idea of touch starvation. I’m a sucker for physical intimacy, past even the sexual sense, it’s a whole love language to me like you don’t realize how much you like to be held and touched until you’ve gone a long time without it, ya dig?

She recently used gold foil to create one of her photoshoots a couple of months ago and I loved it. So I took that basic concept and utilized three different types of silver foil and create this frozen space concept. Chaselle definitely can set the mood in whatever space you place her in and the background just enhances the shot.

- Tell us about your background‌ where are you from and what inspired you to do photography? I was born in Jacksonville, so I know this town like the back of my hand. I’ve seen many changes throughout the years. One of the things that pushed me to do photography is that I am dealing with a memory disorder. I first experienced it in 2010. Its like a seizure that can cause me to forget what happened on a full day. Taking photos and video helped me deal with this. I work mainly as a barber. My dad is a big influence in me. He always pushed me to do better in art wither its cutting hair or drawing etc.

-Whats the meaning behind your username? Why hazard? “ChipXHazard” You can call me Chris. I also get called Chip because of my Instagram username. It was a nickname given to me by friends. When I was about 12 years old, I was very cocky. I thought I was the next Tony Hawk. I went to a skate park and I fell down a ramp face down. I had my hands inside my hoodie. (My dad had warned me). I ended chipping a front tooth. There was a movie around that time called “Toy Soldiers”. So that’s why they called me ChipXHazard, referencing the bad leader toy’s name. I decided to use that name for most of my social accounts.

-What does your work aim to say or show? I like shooting different things. I don’t usually plan every shoot. Some people might say that is crazy and… I know it is. But I am a “in the moment” type of guy. When I started doing Street Photography its all about capturing that moment. Walking around and shooting things that looked good. There is not a specific subject. So when I shoot I tend to go with the flow. For example, the submissions for this month. Sadika Model is one of my favorite models to shoot. I would say she is one of the most creative models I’ve worked with. She comes up with awesome Ideas and I just pick the location. In this shoot we were shooting in a abandoned place. I think mixing a high-fashion style with a location as this helps the model stand out. It also adds a nice mood and some visual noise to the shots. It was a gloomy dark day. I really

SADRESHA SADE Makeup: @sadreshasade

How did you get started to get into makeup? It all started with an eyeshadow palette from Ross, like the ones with a hundred different colors. My mom got it for me back in middle school. She always supports whatever I get my hands into. I started getting into makeup seriously in 2016. I’ve always enjoyed makeup, since middle school. I would do my friends makeup sometimes in college but we’ve come a long way since then. In 2016 I launched my blog, started posting on YouTube and studying the art by watching & learning from other artists. Now my main platforms are Instagram @sadreshasade, Twitter @sadreshasade and I recently start posting on TikTok @sadreshasade3 . Why is it your passion? Not only is makeup my passion, it’s my purpose. I found it. I’ve loved many things, many things bring me joy like spending time with friends & family, the beach, painting, dance & music. But nothing brings me a sense of wholeness like makeup does. Being on set, creative control and collaborating to create a masterpiece, there’s no feeling like it. What do I love most about it? There’s two sides of my artistry. My true calling, high fashion and Print makeup, prep on set to help make a vision come into fruition. The fast pace and excitement of prepping the model, on location touch-ups, moving from location to location with my handy dandy makeup trunk lol Then, there’s the one on one experience of doing a clients makeup for a birthday, wedding or special event. There’s a level of intimacy and personal connection I truly cherish, enhancing my clients natural beauty, that moment when they look in the mirror and their face lights up, and their whole body language shifts, ready to conquer the night. Being apart of that, is a blessing. What inspires your art? EVERYTHING. Music, visual arts, theatre, nature, other artists and so many other things. Some of my favorite artists are Danessa Myricks, Jackie Aina, Alissa Ashley, Molly Bee, Ashley (@strashmee on IG) and many more. I pull inspiration from everywhere. I just learn and study my craft. It helps me grow and expand as an artist.
