Directors Message During our last meeting, we discussed upcoming Chapter activities. One main activity included the Inland Northwest Car Club Council (INCCC) Downtown Scholarship Car Show to be held on 18 July. This is the same date and time as our regular meeting held at Conley’s Place. We decided to participate in this car show as a Chapter and hold our monthly meeting at the car show. This INCCC car show raises funds and supports young car enthusiasts with numerous scholarships yearly. We look forward to letting Spokane know more about Buicks and our Inland Northwest Chapter BCA. We have received valuable information from Jack Welch, BCA National Secretary and BCA National Meet Chairman. The results of the Board of Directors election were announced at the recent National Meet. Jack noted that Mike Book, Sid Meyer, and Bill Stoneberg are the new BCA Board of Director members. The new BCA National officers will be John Steed President, Sid Meyer Vice President, Bill Stoneberg Treasurer and Jack Welch Secretary. In addition, at the National Meet, Jack announced to the National Meet Committee (NMC) that our Chapter would like to make a proposal to host the 2023 National Meet. Apparently, there may be another proposal with a team base approach and would be located in Gettysburg, PA. Even though we responded to the initial NMC solicitation requesting host Chapters out west, there may be another proposal from the east. Such proposal competition will ensure we submit an outstanding proposal to host the 2023 BCA National Meet. Jack did note that Pat Wojahn volunteered to help in preparing our Chapter’s proposal. Pat is a member of the NMC and was very heavily involved in the 2018 Denver Meet. She also was very helpful to Chicago in their being selected to host the 2022 National Meet. Pat generously forwarded me valuable background information for our proposal. One of the documents Pat forwarded was Lonnie Priest’s recently developed Guidebook on Hosting a BCA National Meet. This is a critical 77-page document to direct our proposal submission. I have been in contact with Ms. Shannon Shannon, Associate Director of Sales at Visit Spokane. She was noted in my April Director’s Message regarding her involvement with the Porsche Club of America’s 2017 convention here in Spokane. Three pages of Lonnie’s Guidebook deal with Hotel Contract Requirements and have been forwarded to Shannon. With the Hotel Contract Requirements information and data provided by Pat on earlier and near-term BCA National Meets, Shannon has developed a Visit Spokane “Sales Lead” document to be submitted to area hotels. This is the first step in securing rooms and space needed for our proposal. Hopefully, we will obtain responses from this document in July and make our decision on the host hotel by middle of September. Our Steering Committee will be meeting on 8 July where many aspects of hosting a National Meet will be discussed. We are fortunate to have Pat and Shannon assist us in our proposal efforts. Richard and Gloria Stechelin attended the BCA National Meet in Midwest City, OK 12-15 June. They had a great time and brought back information which will be valuable in our proposal to host the 2023 BCA National Meet. They showed us several T-shirts and logo designs they found at the Meet. Thanks to Richard and Gloria for their interest and information. Greg Lewis BCA #5071 Director, Inland Northwest Chapter BCA

The long winding road Richard and Gloria Stechelin BCA #5611 an interview and audio recording by jeff schindler BCA# 47629

On May 12th of this year I met with Richard and Gloria Stechelin at their home to take a look at their 1930 Buick model 57, conduct an interview while gathering some information about their BUICK. The following was transcribed from this audio recorded interview with hopes to share a little bit about the history of their Buick.

Jeff: What are we looking at here Gloria: 1930 Buick 4 door sedan model 57 Gloria: We received the Buick in 1960 from a family friend and it was no longer running at the time. Richard has done a little bit here and a little bit there. Richard: it was a transmission issue G: WE would love to see the car finally running Jeff: So you had a history with this car prior to receiving it in 1960 G: Yes; in 1951 my mother and I came up from San Jose California to Moscow ID in this car, with the part of the family that owned the car.

the late late late edition July 1, 2019 Volume 03 Number 07 G: 1993 Richard, the family and I moved from California up to the Nine Mile area of WA state, by a moving company and the Buick was the last thing loaded onto the Moving truck and the first thing off. The Buick got unloaded and put into a garage/shop first and then all of our possessions got placed around the Buick and it got buried, it stayed there while we built this house we are currently living in

R: I always wanted to work on the Buick but; life. Family and responsibilities, and the Buick was always covered by boxes and buried it was difficult to get to. It never got worked on while it was in the shop out in Nine Mile Area.

Jeff: So when did you have the Buick drivable and running? Gloria and Richard: No, We have never had the car running. G: we have never ridden in the Buick together, Richard has never ridden in it or even driven the car. R: I had it started once, just after we received it but it would not go into gear. if it was in neutral it would run but just would not go into gear, that was back in 1960. Then we moved it from that apartment to a home with a garage and we put the Buick in that garage. G: Do you have any other questions ? Jeff: When did you begin dismantling the car and why?

the late late late edition July 1, 2019 Volume 03 Number 07 R: A couple years after acquiring it I began dismantling, so the mid sixties, 1965. Took it apart had the frame media blasted, and stripped the paint off the body with solvents and stuff, got it cleaned up and painted the frame then put the body back on it. At that time took the engine to a shop and they had it for 2 years before I got it back. While the engine was out of it took the Buick into a paint shop and they started working on it. About that two year mark received a call that the motor was ready so I rented a trailer to go get the Buick out of the paint shop, haul it over to where the engine was at so they could put the motor back into it. after awhile they called and said it was ready so had to get a trailer again go pick up the Buick with the motor in it and haul it back over to the paint shop, only to learn they had lost their lease. Then all the parts wound up in boxes and hauled over to our house and put in the garage.

Jeff: So this happened in Spokane? R: No California, we were still living in California at that time. G: So this is a California Car Originally Richard and Gloria: So life happens, the Buick got put in a garage half reworked. We had kids and life, did not make the time and in the early nineties we moved out of California brought the car up with us and it was the first thing off the moving transport and the put into another garage and all our stuff got stacked around and on it. and that is really the story.

observations: ( Most of the Buick has been painted and is assembled, the running boards are still unpainted in storage. The interior, and glass are about 25 years old, the tires are about that as well and have never been on the road. The pieces you do not see are in boxes in storage and have never been reassembled, since the paint shop situation. The engine block and transmission are in, while many pieces still remain in boxes in storage. Notice the interior door handles are installed the exterior handles are not installed, see the finished interior door panels )

Was it just last weekend that?

The automotive enthusiast car community of the inland northwest gathered at Roy Langlitz’s chevy ranch for an informal open house and picnic. I had the privilege of attending last Saturdays open house and let me tell you I am so glad I took the opportunity and time to get there and witness many different car clubs coming together. Around two hundred hot rods and vintage automobiles sprawled across the grassy lawn of Langlitz’s ranch.

All the garages and shops were open to be viewed and enjoyed, and I did. The family restores Chevrolets from Camaro, Corvette, Impalas, Chevelles, and there were a lot of customer projects in various stages.

The Inland Northwest Car Club Council (INCCC) Downtown Scholarship car show is July 18th

Our group is attending as a group together which means you all need to meet up at 5:20pm in the north east corner of the arena parking lot at Boone and Washington so that when the car clubs begin rolling south on Washington street heading to Riverside ave you are all together and can be parked together. Bring the club banner, bring membership applications with pens, bring your chairs so you can relax a little bit, bring a camera (contribute those images to this fine work in progress), maybe bring some food, because you will need to eat something. When you get parked and are enjoying the community at large, stop to take it all in, do attend the Scholarship awards which takes place closer to 9pm in the center of it all riverside and howard. Eight city downtown blocks will be shut down just for automotive enthusiast, ENJOY.
