Directors Message

I want to extend a warm welcome to our new members Gus Johnson, and Jim and Peggy Sue Day. Gus lives in Post Falls, ID and is a former Mayor of Post Falls. He has a 1937 5 passenger black 2 door sedan which showed very nicely at our recent 2nd Annual Becker BuickGMC Car Show. We really appreciate that Gus has joined our Chapter. Jim and Peggy Sue moved up from Northern California a couple of years ago and now live outside Riverside, WA, between Omak and Tonasket, north of Chelan. They have been members of BCA for many years. While in California he was an active BCA member and coordinator for several Chapters. They have 1967 and 1972 Rivieras. Jim recently showed his 1972 Riviera at River Park, Chelan area, on September 7th and had a great time. Jim mentioned that they are excited to be joining our Chapter and we are excited to have Jim and Peggy Sue join us. Our annual Becker BuickGMC Car Show on 21 September was a great success. I want to express our thanks and appreciation to Becker BuickGMC for hosting this event. Our fellow member Sergei Kvokov, Sales Manager at Becker BuickGMC deserves great credit for the success of the show. We doubled the number of cars from our 1st Becker Show last year. We had 16 Buicks, including ones belonging to owners who are not currently BCA or INCBCA members. Needless to say, we welcomed them and solicited their membership. A 17th car was a classic 1941 Cadillac convertible belonging to member Steve Zwarg. Even though not a Buick, Steve’s convertible was very much appreciated by the attendees. Photos from the Show appear later in the newsletter. On 20 September, I sent the MirabeauPark Hotel draft contract proposal to Jack Welch, Chairman of the BCA National Meet Committee (NMC) and Pat Wojahn, member of the NMC for their review. An additional six documents, related to the MirabeauPark Hotel, were sent to them as well in support of our proposed hosting of the BCA 2023 National Meet here in the Spokane area. The MirabeauPark Hotel is very excited at the possibility of their being our potential host hotel. My hope is that we will be able to successfully negotiate a contract that meets the needs of BCA and the MirabeauPark Hotel. As I noted in last month’s newsletter, if the host hotel contract negotiations are successful, we will then submit a formal proposal to the NMC which will also include a preliminary budget estimate, sources for volunteer support, local attractions and facilities, driving and bus tour options, events, and potential sponsor support. Becker Buick GMC Car Show images submitted by Greg and Jeff words by jeff schindler BCA# 47629

September 21st 10am-2pm

Many of us here in Spokane are very thankful that we held the show on the weekend that we did and not on September 28th. Temperatures in the area overnight dropped dramatically, many of us had a dusting of snow Saturday morning the 28th upon waking up to 38 degrees, while the local ski mountain received 14inches. So very thankful for the beautiful blue sky, T-shirt wearing, top down kind of day we experienced. A Big “Thank You” to our Troy / Lewiston Idaho members the Gludt family for making it to our 2nd Becker Buick show. Thank you for bringing three Buicks. Thank you for your support. We had a total of 17 vehicles present and we owe a Big “Thank You” to our member Sergei Kvokov, Sales Manager at Becker Buick GMC, he deserves credit for the success of the show, along with the donuts and coffee provided. So 16 Buicks and 1 Cadillac, 12 members and 4 Buick enthusiast who heard about our event and brought out a Buick to join us. A very successful 2nd event and the weather could not have been any better being it was September. Hope you can join us next year, we will definitely need to get a head/vehicle count prior to the event to give Sergei a heads up.

The lunch order is taken quick, the waitresses run the place very efficiently, the food is simple and wonderful all at once. Come join us, we will be around. A true family tradition

photos and story submitted by Doug Gludt BCA# 42933

The Gludt family has been attending the All Buick Open car show in Puyallup WA for more than 20 years. This year we decided to do things a little different. We all drove 1969 Buicks that aren’t pretty and haven’t been on the road in a long time.

My brother Dan and his wife Michelle drove a Skylark convertible that they purchased just a few months before we left. It hadn’t ran in at least 15 years. It got a quarter panel repaired, new timing chain and gears, interior, top, transmission, and wheels. It also had a lot of wiring problems that Dan was able to repair and get everything working.

My brother Dave and his wife Dawn drove a GS400 they purchased 5 years ago with a bad engine. I had a 400 laying around that hasn’t run in 15 years, we put that in and it runs great. Dave repaired the front seat, stole a few parts off of another GS they have and they were ready to go.

Dave and Dawn’s son Cody wanted to go, so he got out my Dad’s Riviera. It’s been about 3 years since it has run. A lifter collapsed, so Dave pulled the intake and replaced it. That got rid of the noise and it ran great. www.inlandnorthwestbuick.org

My wife Lisa and I dug out our Special Deluxe station wagon that we bought back in ’85 and haven’t driven in the last 24 years. It had a lot of rust in both quarters so that got repaired. It also got a transmission, all new brakes, and a few other minor things. Most importantly, we charged the A/C which worked great the whole trip! And like all the others, it got a good cleaning. At least we didn’t have to worry about making it shine.

We all met in Colfax Friday morning, our Mom & Dad, Dick and Doris, rode with us in the wagon. The weather was perfect and all the cars ran great all the way there. I don’t think many people have seen a caravan quite like ours, we got some waves and a few thumbs ups!

We got to the show Saturday morning. As usual, it was awesome. A lot of beautiful cars and great people. We kicked tires and talked Buicks all day. During the awards they had our whole clan come up to give us the “long distance award” and thank us for being so supportive of their show. We told them we wouldn’t miss it and look forward to it every year. The show is in conjunction with Meeker Days, a city wide celebration with live music, arts and crafts, vendors, and lots of different kinds of food. It’s a great way to spend a day.

On Sunday morning the trip home was as good as the trip over with one small hiccup. Dan and Michelle’s convertible got a little warm running up Snoqualmie Pass and threw out some antifreeze. We just stopped at the top, let it cool down, added some water and continued on. The rest of the trip went trouble free.

There was one thing missing this year. Our good friend Doug Langley and his ’66 Riviera. Doug has been going with us to this show for years. He was and always will be greatly missed.

We all worked together thrashing on these cars for two months to get them roadworthy for this trip. Getting there and back without getting Triple A involved was quite an accomplishment! We had a lot of fun. Spending time with family and Buicks, it just doesn’t get any better than that. As we like to say, “We’re making memories” Doug Gludt

WILDCAT WANDERING

Jeff Schindler BCA #47629

I want to thank everyone who submitted images and stories who contributed to this months issue of our clubs newsletter which I like to call Kaleidoscope. Thank you Doug Gludt, Jim Hartford and Greg Lewis for the images and stories It is so nice to have articles and image/story submissions to choose from when I sit down to assemble our monthly Kaleidoscope, < tonight was 1:30pm-6pm> It is your club and this is your opportunity to share who you are and what you have been working on. I look forward to reporting updates on the Stechelin’s 1930 progress while in the hands of Mr. Tilton. I hope each of you has an opportunity to get outside and enjoy the many car shows, gathering and community events that our beautiful region has to offer while the weather is perfect. It is a great time of year for a fall road trip to any one of the 76 stunning lakes, there is so much color happening within an hours drive of Spokane. Not to mention a drive north of the border to Lake Louise and Banff in Alberta CA. Sunny and blue sky’s this afternoon with temps being 46 degrees and evening lows of 31, what a difference a few days makes. https://www.banfflakelouise.com Wondering if anyone has parts, or cars or such for sale or anything they are searching for. would like to include a classified section. Also looking for your contributions for resources for parts and services that many of us would like to be aware of. Something that I am going to add to our website with links to them. If you have resources and/or services you would like to recommend (and tell us what you used them for). would love to start putting that together. FOR SALE / received Oct 2nd via email; we saw this Buick back in June for $9500.00 We've just reduced the price and listed the 1963 Buick Wildcat for $6,900 on CraigsList. Please let your club members know that we're 'motivated' to sell the car and we'd love to show it to anyone who might be interested. thanks in advance Susan (and Jeff) Banke call 509-238-9605
