A trip to remember
Welcome to Inlandsbanan
There are many who are interested in Inlandsbanan, but who have never had the opportunity to take the tour. They wonder about the route, and how it works in practice. This is actually quite easy to explain. What is not as easy to explain is why some people return year after year, and what the special attraction of Inlandsbanan might be. The regular rhythm of the wheels on the rails? Or perhaps the area’s natural beauty and its heritage, and the variety, clearly obvious as you travel through the many different types of landscapes. The small communities where people gather to welcome the train to offer company as well as music and home baked buns. The train hosts, who each in their own way contribute to make the experience much more than a mere means of transport.
Introducing the people who take care of you. You will find us in our new home at Lokstallet, Storsjöstråket 19, Östersund, where you can also buy gift cards and souvenirs, and obtain information. You can also contact us on tel. +46 (0)771-53 53 53, and info@inlandsbanan.se, or visit our website www.inlandsbanan.com.
What the attraction might be is up to each individual to decide. However, if a Japanese lady decides to enjoy the experience two years running, then we are not the only ones to feel that Inlandsbanan is something quite extraordinary. Welcome on board! Follow us on:

Come along with us for an experience for life
A journey on Inlandsbanan is an experience unlike any other. Inland Sweden is a soulful place with a big heart, and there are plenty of adventures waiting to be had. The 100-year-old railway stretches from Kristinehamn in the south to G채llivare in the north. The track is of course lined with a rich history, but also with vibrant, creative communities. You will encounter people, culture, animals, food and nature of a kind that you will not find anywhere else. What separates Inlandsbanan from other railway journeys is that to a large extent the journey itself is the destination. There is plenty of time to enjoy, taste, explore or just be. You will spend your day travelling, getting off the train for overnight stays at stops along the way. The train stops for coffee breaks and meal breaks, but also for special sights. You are accompanied on the train by knowledgeable train hosts, who, apart from telling you about the places you are travelling past, also contribute towards creating a pleasant atmosphere on board. You can choose between planning your own trip or booking a complete package tailored to your interests and desires. You have a choice between three ways of travelling: book a package tour, use the Inlandsbanan Card or buy single tickets. This year, we are offering eight package tours, two of which are brand new! The good thing about a package tour is that both the train journey and hotel accommoda-
4
tion are booked in advance. This is a simple and comfortable way of getting a complete experience. Some activities have been selected for you and form part of the packages, but apart from these, it is up to you how you spend your time. If you would rather travel completely as you please, our rail pass, the Inlandsbanan Card, is the best option. This is valid for 14 days from the date of departure and it is up to you to decide where you stop and for how long. Why not take the family along, two children aged 15 or under travel free when accompanied by an adult. You can also choose to travel on just one or more shorter stretches, when the best option is to buy a single ticket. And if you need help with booking connecting trains, then we are happy to assist you.

Knowledgeable train hosts on board
Digital travel guide By using our app, which you can download for free to your smartphone or tablet, you will find out much more about Inlandsbanan. You can choose to read or listen to the different parts in Swedish, English or German. You can see your current position throughout your journey and access interesting information. A simple way to find out a bit more – before, during and after your trip. There is of course free wi-fi on board the train.
Our committed train hosts will be on hand throughout the journey on the train. They will help you get settled, take your food and coffee break orders and, as far as possible, deal with any practical requests. The train hosts are knowledgeable and tell you about the places, sights and natural landscape you see along the railway. They will not accompany you to your accommodation or on excursions, but are always on hand on board the train.
How to book your journey Food and coffee breaks along the railway During the journey, the train will stop for coffee breaks and meal breaks. You will be asked to place you order in advance on the train, so that the food is ready to be collected when you reach the stop. The food is produced on site and many places base their menu on locally produced ingredients. This gives you a chance to try new flavours and explore the inland specialities.
Once you have decided how you want to travel, the easiest way to make a booking is via our website, www. inlandsbanan.com You can also ring our booking office on +46 (0)771 53 53 53 or email info@inlandsbanan.se so that we can assist you and answer any questions you may have. We recommend that you book your journey in good time before you travel, to ensure you get a place. It is also possible to buy the Inlandsbanan card and single tickets directly on board the train.

Day 1 | Kristinehamn You make your own travel arrangements to Kristinehamn, where your package tour begins with an overnight stay. We can help you arrange connecting journeys by train – just let us know when you make your booking. Once you are in Kristinehamn there are several sights and excursions that are definitely not to be missed. Perhaps a trip around the beautiful archipelago on the replica 17th century sailing ship Bojorten or shopping in the town’s delightful boutiques.
Day 2 | Kristinehamn–Mora After breakfast at your hotel you begin your journey north by train to new adventures. The first stage takes you through the historical landscape of Bergslagen marked by the mining industry that flourished in the 18th century. The rolling forests are dotted with small lakes, reinforcing the magical quality of Värmland. The train now leaves Inlandsbanan and travels via Borlänge through Dalarna to Mora.
Day 3 | Mora–Östersund Because of its delightful location on the shore of Lake Siljan and its rich cultural heritage there is much to see and do in Mora. We suggest you make time for a visit to Zorngården (entry included) or the Vasa Race museum or a walk along beautiful Siljan. In the afternoon the journey continues by train through the county of Härjedalen. Here you will see the wilderness at close quarters when you visit a real bear’s den. In the evening we arrive at Östersund, Jämtland’s county town.
Day 4 | Östersund Östersund is a true summer city with a great deal to offer. Take a walk to the heritage museum Jamtli History Land and meet up with people and places from days gone by. Entry is included. Or perhaps you want to discover the city on your own? Bikes can be hired from the tourist information office, where you can also pick up a map of cycling routes. Enjoy your bike ride!
Day 5 | Östersund–Vilhelmina The journey continues, past the villages around Lake Storsjön and past Strömsund. This landscape of lakes and mountains was, for instance, the inspiration to Beppe Wolgers’ film about Dunderklumpen and the giant Jorm. In Vilhelmina there is enough time to visit both the heritage museum and the church town.
Day 6 | Vilhelmina–Arvidsjaur We travel on through the southern parts of Lapland, taking a break at Storuman, where you can visit the station house, a listed building. In Sorsele we visit the Inlandsbanan museum, where we get an insight into how the railway was built more than 100 years ago.
Day 7 | Arvidsjaur–Gällivare Arvidsjaur offers a wide variety of activities, from fishing to canoeing or a visit to the Sami village Lappstaden. In the afternoon you embark on Inlandsbanan again and just before reaching Jokkmokk, you cross the Arctic Circle, where the train makes a stop. On the way to Gällivare you travel through the Laponia World Heritage Site. From Gällivare we take a coach to the summit of Dundret, where you can enjoy the most astounding views in the light summer night and, for a period of around one month, also experience the Midnight Sun (until 3 Aug).
Day 8 | Gällivare For those who have opted to finish the journey in Gällivare, the tour ends after breakfast. You are welcome to stay on and see more of the area’s rich heritage and beautiful nature. You could visit Europe’s largest copper mine Aitik, for instance, or go for a pleasant hike on Dundret mountain.
Day 9 | Gällivare–Östersund After an early breakfast, the journey turns back south towards Östersund. The scenery actually looks different seen in “reverse order”.
Day 10 | Östersund–Mora/Kristinehamn This last leg of the journey south with Inlandsbanan, which takes you back to where you started, marks the end of the tour.

Tour route and overnight stays
Day 1 | Mora–Orsa Inlandsbanan departs from Mora in the afternoon. You will get off the train already in Orsa, where you will be staying for two nights in a hotel. Take the opportunity to look around, visit the Tourist Information Office for good suggestions for things to do. Perhaps you might like to go bowling – in Orsa there are special lanes for children.
Day 2 | Orsa–Grönklitt Today you will spend the whole day at the Bear Park in Orsa Grönklitt. The park is home to Kodiak bears, which are the world’s largest land-based predators, weighing up to 800 kg and reaching a height of up to 3 metres. You will also find brown bears, wolves, lynx, wolverines, Siberian tigers, Kamchatka bears, polar bears and snow leopards.
Day 3 | Orsa–Östersund Perhaps you would like to go for a swim at Orsa Camping, known as the “Riviera of Dalarna”, before your departure. Then Inlandsbanan will carry you towards Östersund and new activities. Along the way we will stop and get off the train to take a look at a real bear’s den in the forest. In Östersund you will be staying at the hostel in Jamtli, which includes breakfast.
Day 4 | Östersund Today you can look forward to exploring Jamtli History Land and meeting people and settings from several time periods. The 1,000-year-old Överhogdal tapestries, dating from the Viking Age, are on show at Jamtli. Here, children can play on the Children’s Railway and pretend to be train drivers, stokers or curious passengers. You can wander straight into the TV programme “Five ants are more than four elephants”, a setting for the whole family. The Storsjöhyttan glassworks is within walking distance down by the marina for small pleasure craft. On a clear day we recommend visiting Arctura, the highest restaurant in Östersund, with view for miles around over mountains, lakes and forests.
Day 5 | Östersund–Blattnicksele After an early breakfast the journey continues on Inlandsbanan up through the land of the reindeer, so don’t be surprised if you see reindeer as well as elks and bears along the track. In Blattnicksele you will be collected from the station for a short transfer to the camping site, which is located on a headland in the Vindelälven river. Blattnicksele is a small village with a grocery shop which stocks most things you could wish for. At the camping site you can hire fishing rods and boats for angling or practice lassoing reindeer horns. Make use of the wood-fired sauna and go for a swim in the river or the pool. Breakfast is included.

Travelling with the Inlandsbanan Card
Discover more! The Inlandsbanan Card allows you 14 days unlimited travel on Inlandsbanan from Kristinehamn in the south to Gällivare in the north. You decide where you stay and for how long. There are lots of interesting and unusual places to visit along Inlandsbanan. And also a lot of different activities, such as different types of cultural events, historical walks, riding and fishing. Hiking is another option, either along trails or independently in national parks and in the mountains.
The Inlandsbanan Card is your ticket to a wealth of different experiences. Visit Kristinehamn and the Lake Vänern archipelago, which has a Picasso sculpture as a navigation point. Go canoeing on the Bergslagen canal, following the route taken by iron in the days before the railway was built. Visit mines and search for minerals in one of the world’s most mineral-rich areas. Learn more about the hard lives of the navvies on the railway and have a go at pushing an inspection trolley yourself. If you are musical and perhaps even play an instrument you should visit the Orsayran festival that takes place on Wednesdays in July. Musicians from far and wide meet here to make music together in the streets and town square. Appreciate the beauty of nature. At Jamtli, the county museum for Jämtland, time stands still. Visit 18th century Sweden and experience everyday life in that era.
22
Or why not hire a car or take a bus up the mountain to see and absorb the magnificence of the mountains at close quarters. Visit Lapland and the Vindelfjällen mountains, where Swedish downhill skiing stars such as Ingemar Stenmark and Anja Pärson grew up and took their first steps on the slopes. Or you could enjoy the beauty of the landscape while hiking along the Kungsleden trail and staying in the mountain cabins along the way. The card costs SEK 1,795. If you want to travel for a little while longer you can buy an extra week for only SEK 400/card. We recommend that you pay the SEK 30 for a seat reservation to ensure that you have a seat on the train, especially if you are booking for more than one person. The card is also valid on selected “mountain buses”, see www.inlandsbanan.com or contact the booking office for more information.

Meet the wild animals Wild animals are a common sight along the Inlandsbanan tracks, both reindeer, moose and bears appear. However, there is of course no guarantee that you will see them. If you want to be sure and at the same time have the opportunity to get really close, there are several stops along the railway that can help you. You could visit Europe’s largest bear park, Orsa Grönklitt, go to Frösö Zoo in Östersund or visit the Båtsuoj Sami Centre to experience Sami culture and meet reindeer at close quarters.
The Midnight Sun North of the Arctic Circle is a special place, because this is where the Midnight Sun appears. Imagine 24 hours of uninterrupted sunlight which makes the day and nighttime blur. Add to this the scenery, sometimes called Europe’s last wilderness, and a unique experience is yours. The phenomenon occurs from around the end of May until midJuly, but after mid-July it’s still very light. Why not take the Midnight Sun bus tour to Dundret mountain while in Gällivare?
Open for everyone In Sweden we have something called Allemansrätten – the right of public access. This means that everyone has the right to visit the countryside. This is an amazing freedom which means that everyone can get close to Sweden’s superb nature and culture and can experience it for themselves. However, this freedom brings with it responsibilities – so please be careful not to damage or disturb the animals and nature you visit and show respect to landowners and other people in the countryside. You can read more about the right of public access at www.allemansratten.se

Travel information The Mora–Östersund–Gällivare section operates during the day from 2 June to 24 August. There is a train service on the Kristinehamn–Mora section from 29 June – 9 August under a cooperation agreement between Inlandsbanan and Tågab. For further information, see the timetables.
Additional information Remember that during certain periods it is advisable to book accommodation in advance, particularly for the Midsummer holiday and during July, which is a popular month for holidaymakers. Advance booking is also recommended during popular events such as the Storsjö Cup in the first week of July and the Storsjöyran festival in Östersund at the end of July. Mora is popular with visitors so it is always best to reserve accommodation there and the same is true of Gällivare. You can also ring ahead during your journey to check availability and if necessary you can carry on straight to another stop.
Railcars This is the classic way of travelling on Inlandsbanan. The railcars, which are also known as “motor coaches”, operate on Inlandsbanan during daytime between Mora and Gällivare. You cannot move between the carriages during the journey.

Award-winning artisan food n VILHELMINA
Martin Bergman is a fifth-generation artisan fisherman. He is also an entrepreneur who, having worked as a hunting and fishing guide, has become one of the country’ leading artisan food producers in his own field. As a child he learned about the fine art of fishing and fish processing with his father, grandfather and uncles in Norrsundet on the east coast of Sweden. Today he has taken the noble art of fish processing to a higher level. For some years he has operated his own smokehouse, farm shop and restaurant in Vilhelmina. Five years running he has won the Swedish artisan food championships.
”
It is quite obvious that Martin is deeply devoted to artisan food production. He has taken the long road and started as a small-scale producer, smoking fish for tourists at the camp site in Vilhelmina. It soon became apparent that the local population too appreciated Martin’s products, and he began to travel to the markets in the surrounding districts. Demand, in particular from the supermarkets, began to rise, allowing Martin to take on employees and start building his own shop, Vilhelmina Gårdsbutik. In 2011 the doors to his restaurant opened to the public. “We bank on well-cooked food made from locally produced ingredients. We smoke and process fish, for instance char and salmon trout from waters in the surrounding area, and even sea fish and
other delicacies from the sea,” said Martin. “What we don’t produce ourselves, we procure from other food producers in the area. We work together with many local producers and, in addition to our own produce, we sell meat, jam, bread and chocolate confectionary in our shop.” That he has been awarded first prize in the artisan food competition every year since 2008 is proof of the high quality of his produce. The competition ensures an unbiased assessment based on criteria such as taste, smell, character and treatment of raw materials. Martin feels it’s only natural to want to continue developing the products and the activities of the restaurant. “This is a beautiful location, and we will invest in further development of ancillary activities, for instance by making use of the surrounding nature,” Martin sums up.

Restaurant Fjällglimten and char A few kilometres north of Jokkmokk by Lake Vaikijaur, the Inlandsbanan train stops mornings and evenings. For Kent and Maggan Danielsson, who in summer run the restaurant Fjällglimten, it means that the coffee shop/restaurant provides food and coffee to visitors from every corner of the world. From the glass veranda visitors enjoy the views of the mountain landscapes. “You can see all the way to the Sarek massif,” explains Maggan. “It’s a good place for taking a break, whether you are driving down the E45 or arriving by train.” The couple has been running the restaurant for many years in familiar surroundings, gradually extending the facility. The restaurant serves many regional Norrland specialities, such as for instance suovas (smoked reindeer), reindeer hamburgers, and wild smoked char on a board. Many guests also take food out to the newly built timber cabin to enjoy their meal by the open fire. “In the afternoon the orders from the train hosts arrive two hours ahead of the guests. Then we know what they want, and we can start preparations. I always have fresh smoked char available when they arrive,” said Kent. “Over the counter, the visitors can buy both dried reindeer and fish to take home.” There is also a small shop which sells a good selection of local handicraft and its own range of jewellery. It also operates as a factory shop for Jokkmokks Tenn. Maggan also explains that many guests return to the shop on the way back to the south to buy souvenirs and presents. “Then they usually know what they want, and have a bit more time to choose.”

Fågelsjö
Unique world heritage – and wonderful buns One of the seven Hälsingegård farmhouse buildings, declared world heritage sites by UNESCO, is situated in Orsa Finnmark. The history of Fågelsjö Gammelgård “Bortom Åa” goes far back in time to the 17th century when immigrants from Finland arrived in the area. But what is unique is that in this building time has stood still for more than a century. Every thing is just as it was when husband and wife Mårten and Kristina Persson left the house in 1910, locking the door to move into their newly built home elsewhere on the farm. The new house – The America House – is said to have been inspired by a card from relatives who had emig rated. As the couple had no children, the building was donated to Loos municipality to ensure that it would be preserved for posterity. Today the house is a heritage site, owned by Ljusdal municipality. Since 1953, the heritage association in Fågelsjö has been responsible for the running of the house. Every year thousands of visitors come here for a guided walk round the farm buildings. There is, for instance, a gunsmithy, a bakehouse, outhouses and shelters, the oldest from approx. 1740. Today, the so-called America House is run as a venue for courses and there is also a café. Entrepreneur Britta Nilsson has been responsible for activities here since 1996. “Since we were declared a world heritage site, the eyes of the whole world have been on us. We have visitors who only travel around to look at various world heritage sites. We also have to deal with other demands involving security and upkeep of the property,” said Britta, adding that there is a 30-year care plan in operation. However, Fågelsjö is more than a heritage site. This is where the home-baked buns and sandwiches are made for Britta to deliver to the travellers on Inlandsbanan for their coffee break treat. “Every season we make around 10,000 cinnamon buns. The beautiful location by the lake attracts many visitors, who come for a cup of coffee and a dip in the water at the beach. Those who want to, can sleep over at the STF hostel in Fågelsjö,” said Britta.

Jämtlands Sikås
Every morning in the summer season she serves home baked buns and sandwiches to travellers on Inlandsbanan when the train stops for a longedfor coffee break. This she has done for many years. Now Birgitta Morin Persson has brought to life the 100-year old hotel. Her flatbread wraps are praised for their excellence. And the train passengers can get there in two minutes. In the past, Birgitta considered her job at the coffee stop in Sikås more like a “summer job”. At the time, her week-day job involved working in the kitchen in the childcare sector and she considered the summer a nice break. When the hotel came up for sale she took the opportunity to make a dream come true. “I have always loved the village hotel, thinking that it should be restored. We are now well on the way on interior work, and with work on the coffee shop and the gift shop. There is much more to do, but as a recent pensioner, I will have plenty of time. However, the bridal suite was inaugurated last Whitsun, with excellent breakfast included,” said Birgitta, who has many plans for the building. The aim is to restore the hotel to its former glory, which was also one of the conditions on which she was allowed to take over from the former owner. What is old must be treated with care while modernising the building. “Many train passengers are interested in the old hotel and its history. Some say that they absolutely must return to see how things progress. I run this hotel because I think it is fun, and my family, friends and people from the village help and support me.”

Many events!
Swim Vansbro!
Discover culture in the Vansbro area! Midsummer is a huge and special occasion here, just as in the rest of Dalarna county. Around the Midsummer Weekend, the play Ingmarsspelen, Rune Lindström’s classic summer play based on Selma Lagerlöf ’s novel Jerusalem, is performed on the beautiful outdoor stage in Nås. Many further events take place during the summer, for instance the football tournament Pepes Cup at the end of June and the Vansbrosimningen swimming competition at the beginning of July. As the nights start drawing in over Lake Busjön in Äppelbro in August, it is time for the Troll Wedding (Trollbröllopet) ensemble to take to the stage, offering drama, romance and comedy in one of the oldest folk plays in the country. Other events include snowmobile drag racing on grass and the Marie Memorial Race.
In 2014 the Vansbrosimningen swimming competition will move from Sunday to Saturday of the same weekend. This year will also see the introduction of the first ever Open River, a swim race aimed at a more individual pace. Vansbrosimningen, which will now become a full week of swimming events, will begin on Saturday 28 June with the Vansbro Triathlon. The bike race Vansbro Bianchi 120 will take place on Sunday 29 June. The full programme is as follows: 28 June Vansbro Triathlon, 29 June Vansbro Bianchi 120, 3 July Vansbro Marathon, 4 July Vansbro Halvsim half distance, Vansbro Open River, 5 July Vansbrosimningen race, 6 July Vansbro Tjejsim women’s race, Vansbro Kortsim shorter swim race, Vansbro Ungdomssim for young people, Lilla Vansbrosimningen children’s race. As for culture, events include the chamber music festival Vinterfest and Vattnäs Concert Barn, the newly built opera house outside Mora. Take advantage of these and live life to the full.
See the works of a master at the Zorn Museum As an artist, Zorn was capable of anything, whatever the technique. In the museum you will find famous oil paintings and watercolours such as Vallkulla and Törnsnåret, virtuoso wood sculptures such as Mona och Mormor, but also other works in wood and silver, drawings and etchings. Zorn’s fabulous water studies fill a whole wall in the exhibition, while his elegant oil sketches take up another wall. At the Zorn Museum you can find your own favourite among his famous and lesser-known works. Make sure you visit the Zorn House, the Zorn couple’s home, which is preserved as it stood in the early 1900s. It has been decorated in an original style and is of course one of the most famous artist’s homes in the country.

For four days in February, various concert venues will resound with music in a glistening wintry Dalarna. People will be travelling from all around to experience the festival described by BBC Music Magazine as “one of the most enjoyable festivals in Europe”, and which Frankfurter Allgemeine has compared to Gidon Kremer’s venerable Lockenhaus Festival. A festival focused on small scale, relaxation and intimacy. A true music festival where the Ovansiljan area north of Lake Siljan plays host to world-class artists. That the festival is located in the middle of the beautiful Dalarna landscape is an added bonus which is appreciated by Swedish and foreign visitors alike. The prospect of a pleasant winter holiday alongside first-class music performances is an added attraction.

Orsa Bear Park is home to brown bears, Kamchatka bears, polar bears and Kodiak bears, but also Siberian tigers, leopards, wolves, lynx and wolverines. The Kodiak bears moved into their own bear paradise “Kodiak Island” in summer 2012. They are the world’s largest land-based predators, and can weigh up to 1,000 kg and reach a length of 3 metres! The park is characterized by huge enclosures which allow the animals to live much as they would in the wild. So if you are interested in animals, please visit Orsa Bear Park!
Did you know that … Lake Orsasjön is part of the “Siljan Ring”, which was formed through a meteorite impact 365 million years ago. The musical all-rounder and Orsa resident Kalle Moraeus also runs a wood products business in Orsa, making instrument cases (for transporting musical instruments). The sandy beach at Orsa Camping is around 800 metres long. The TV programme Wild Kids is recorded in Grönklitt in Orsa.

World Heritage – Fågelsjö Gammelgård Its unique setting makes it not only one of the highlights in the municipality, but also one of seven Hälsingeland farm houses to have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage. The farm can trace its roots to Finnish forest-clearing settlers in the 1600s. At Christmas 1910, the last owners stepped out into the cold, locked the door and walked over to the newly built America House, leaving all fixtures and fittings behind in “Bortom Åa”, a farm house left intact since the early 1800s. During the summer there are daily tours of the house, and in the America House there is a cafe with homebaked bread. The farm now also houses a handicrafts shop. www.fagelsjo.nu

Härjedalen Mountain Museum In Funäsdalen you can visit one of the most modern museums in Sweden, featuring one of the oldest collections. It is a museum for the whole family, with unique collections displayed in beautiful and fun displays about mountain farmers, Sami and ironworkers. The museum, which is built in the special Härjedalen style, nestles under the majestic Funäsdalsberget mountain. The exterior is nearly as exciting as the interior, which displays the rich and distinctive culture of Härjedalen. All thanks to a visionary trader who laid the foundations for these collections as long ago as 1894.
The musk ox centre in Härjedalen Meet a pre-historic animal – right here and now. In 1971, five musk oxen wandered across the border from Norway into Sweden, forming the basis for our current herd in the Härjedalen mountains. In the unique musk ox enclosure outside Tännäs in western Härjedalen, musk oxen live in their natural environment. They have plenty of room and much of their natural food. You can observe the animals from the high ramp in the show enclosure. An enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide is on hand to tell you about the animals.

Europe’s oldest tapestry One of the most remarkable cultural treasures in Europe was discovered at the beginning of the last century in Överhogdal, some 50 km north of Sveg. It consisted of five tapestries, the oldest parts of which date back to the 9th century. This makes them the best preserved Viking tapestries in Europe! The original tapestries can be seen at Jamtli County Museum in Östersund. In Överhogdals Forngård, built around the replica Överhogdal tapestries, an exhibition shows how the oldest tapestries were found, how they would once have been made and how they can be interpreted. Do enjoy a cup of coffee in the cafe and perhaps also a swim at the beach.
The largest wooden bear in the world The bear is the county animal of Härjedalen, and since 2005 also a landmark in Sveg. Here you can see the gigantic, 13 metre high bear, weighing 80 tonnes. It is built from 60 cm long planks of wood, creating a self-supporting shell. Internally, there are three levels with a total floor area of around 70 square metres. Cafe Cineast in Sveg also attracts many visitors with its spectacular exhibitions from the world of cinema. The fact that you can also buy coffee and snacks is just the icing on the cake.

Klövsjö Gårdsbryggeri, with its attached restaurant Humleliret, makes various kinds of beer. Don’t forget to visit the local heritage museum Tomtan, which dates back to the 1700s.
Åsarna is a beautiful place to visit, with a good choice of places to stay and eat, a newly established roller skiing track and a ski museum. Markets and vintage car meeting
Ivars Motor Museum in Hoting is a very pleasant and impressive car and motorcycle museum. Nearly 100 cars, some 40 motorcycles, model cars and other motor-related items ensure that this is one the best and largest motor museums in Europe. We have such rarities as the Mercedes Benz 300 SL with the gull-wing doors and King Gustav VI Adolf ’s Daimler Princess with body by Vanden Plas. Apart from these luxury cars, there is a large number of cars from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The motorcycles include both Harley Davidson and Indian, but also such rarities as Neracar and Hägg of Sweden. Alight at Hoting Camping.
The Dundermarknaden market in Strömsund is considered the highlight of the year by many people. For four days in the middle of July, the town plays host to artist performances, a huge market and a fairground. The market, which has been held here for 30 years, attracts visitors from the entire county, as well as many former Strömsund residents returning from other parts of the country. Hoting holds a market in the middle of June, where you can see well-known artists perform, make purchases from market stalls and take part in many different activities.

Nature adventures For those of a more adventurous nature, there are good opportunities for trying some outdoor activities in the magnificent natural landscape in Dorotea. Take your friends or family hiking in the mountains, go canoe paddling, riding, or paintballing or come along on a wilderness safari. Gazing up at the majestic Borgahällan mountain with its 800 metre vertical drop is an unforgettable experience. Fishing here is also an experience out of the ordinary, with 16 fisheries management areas and an abundance of different fish species in waters ranging from peaceful tarns to rushing rapids and rivers and lakes of all sizes. We attract both hardcore fishermen and anglers looking for a quiet, peaceful spot for a moment’s fishing.
Kullerbacken Open Air Museum
Swedens’s only caravan museum
When you walk between the different buildings in the open air museum you get a sense of days gone by in different historical periods in Dorotea. Inside the buildings there are interesting displays that give you an insight into how people lived in the past, and you can smell the newly baked flatbread and discover what it was like working in the bakery. Many Dorotea residents traditionally get together to celebrate Midsummer’s Eve on Kullerbacken.
If you want to see something different, you must visit the Caravan Museum in central Dorotea by European route 45, opposite the factory where SoliferPolar produces its caravans. Here you can see how the caravans have evolved over the decades. Polar was established in 1964 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2014.
Unique works of art In Dorotea you will find 4 of the 13 works of art which form part of “Art Route Seven Rivers”, which stretches from the east coast to the mountains in the west. All works of art are located outdoors and create a unique ambience through the mixture of art with nature. The municipality also has several pleasant little handicrafts shops and farm shops which must not be missed.

Settler week
Close to the wilderness
Appetisers
In the second week of July each year, the municipality arranges a culture week with activities for both adults and children. Barbecue evenings and concerts are interspersed with workshops, storytelling sessions, scything, Sami culture and meetings with local personalities. The week concludes with the Local Heritage Days, when a historic market in the Church Town, folk music and motor events tend to be on the agenda. You are warmly welcome to a week out of the ordinary!
The Sagavägen fairytale trail and the Vildmarks vägen wilderness trail take you up to our two beautiful mountain valleys. Here you can listen to the mighty Trappstegsforsen waterfall, and feel the history among the 80 wooden tepees in Fatmomakke, the Sami meeting place since time immemorial. Experience the feeling of being at one with nature and enjoy the view for miles around from Stekenjokk. Sagavägen has tempting activities around Dikanäs and Kittelfjäll. Visit the land of Kaanan in Matsdal and rediscover old cultural treasures along the many fairytale trails that run alongside this enchanting road towards Norway. The wilderness is all around you, it surrounds you and a journey through our landscape is guaranteed to give you a taste for more.
Natural raw ingredients and award-winning artisan food – this is how we describe our best appetisers. Here you will find not just one, but several local food producers who serve up world-class food. Enjoy crowberry juice, hot smoked peppercorn salmon, cloudberry jam, flatbread and smoked reindeer heart. Then imagine a piece of dark chocolate praline for dessert. Select your favourites from traditional Swedish dishes, Norrland delicacies and locally produced food with an Italian feel. There is plenty to tempt you!

Dance gala and market by the border The Storuman Days and Dance Gala are held in Storuman the weekend after Midsummer every year and large numbers of people who’ve moved away from Storuman return here every year for this event. There is something here for everyone, whether big or small! You can browse the market for finds, sit down for a bite to eat, ride on the carousel, listen to music, or take part in running and arm wrestling competitions. Maybe you’ll even meet Heidi Andersson, the arm wrestling champion from Ensamheten. The Dance Gala takes place on the Saturday and features performances by current artists. The last weekend in July is the highlight of the summer in Hemavan, with some 150 market traders setting up their stalls, selling everything from boats to frying pans. There is food from all corners of the world and entertainment both day and night. Don’t miss the traditional dance evenings at Udden!
Discover the mountains Take the bus from Storuman to Hemavan Tärnaby for a visit to the mountains. Why not walk the 10 kilometre long Drottningleden trail between Hemavan and Laisaliden, which is a well-marked trail. Take a break and enjoy the stillness and the views over the water and the mountains. Savour the smells and the light. Take your time, stay for as little or as long as you like. In the area you will also find many fine fishing waters, both in lakes and streams.
Swedish Swamp Soccer Championships If you enjoy playing or watching football of a slightly different kind and aren’t afraid to get dirty between your toes, then Sweden’s dirtiest football tournament may be the thing for you! Register yourself or your team for the Swedish Swamp Soccer Championships, which are held at the beginning of July. The tournament starts on Friday lunchtime and the final takes place on Saturday evening. The organizers will accept registrations up until around Midsummer. As usual, we look forward to a weekend with lots of people and lots of fun.

Downhill cycling If you like high-speed adventure, you could try downhill cycling in Hemavan Tärnaby Bike Park on the slopes that fostered such global ski stars as Ingemar Stenmark, Anja Pärson and Jens Byggmark. In the park, which is situated by the summertime cable car in Hemavan, there are a handful of completed runs graded green to black according to difficulty. All tracks are built using the distinctive structure of the mountain as their starting point. Most are so-called single tracks, reminiscent of hiking trails, and utilise the character of the mountain to the full! Interest is growing year on year so it is a good idea to book in advance!

Excellent fishing Fishing is of course one of the large attractions in the summer. In Sorsele municipality there are wild, untamed waters and magnificent wilderness, creating the perfect conditions for both fish and fishermen. We have everything from forest tarn perch to arctic char, angling for children and dream conditions for fly fishermen. These are the waters where you might land your biggest ever grayling, salmon trout, pike or salmon. To say that the fishing waters in Sorsele are the best in Europe is not an overstatement.

Hiking in Vindelfjällen

A trip on Älvkungen
In recent years some of the best hiking trails in Sweden have been created in Ammarnäs and Vindelfjällen. Whether you want to go for a day trip or a longer hike, the mountain village Ammarnäs is the obvious place to start. Here you can head directly into Vindelfjällen, the largest nature reserve in Europe, and there is a route for everyone. There are a variety of day hikes, starting from the comfort of the village, or classic long-distance hikes along the famed Kungsleden or Vindelvaggileden trails. You’ll be hiking in the land where reindeer calf marking takes place, the original Sapmi. Every step you take, you are surrounded by tradition, culture and magnificent scenery.
Even if you are only staying for a short while, there are attractions and sights for you to see in Sorsele. The Inlandsbanan Museum, which is located in the old goods shed in the station building, has displays showing ideas, dreams and reality over 100 years. In Ammarnäs Naturum visitor centre you can see an exhibition about Vindelfjällen nature and culture, sights and attractions. Sorsele Library is a cultural centre which always has interesting exhibitions during the year. Church history includes Gillesnuole chapel from the 1600s and the Viktoria church in Juktådalen. Interesting meeting places in a land that had no roads.
Älvkungen, the unique tour boat on Vindelälven, is moored at its jetty in the centre of Sorsele throughout the summer. Few experiences can compare with a boat tour in Vindelfjällen. Imagine an evening when the surface of Lake Storvindeln is perfectly still in the light of the Midnight Sun. You will be tempted to jump in for a swim. At the Sorsele Local Heritage Museum you can see the original Älvkungen in a small museum. The museum is a busy place with a cafe selling homebaked bread and you are welcome to order a picnic basket to take along on the boat while the skipper tells yet another amazing story about life in these parts.

In Arjeplog we tend to say that we have five seasons, and your experience will depend on when you decide to visit us. The large municipality, with its high mountains and pine heaths, rivers and thousands of lakes, has something special to offer whatever the season. You can experience light summer nights, when the fish are biting in the lakes and you don’t want to go to bed. Autumn is the time for hunting, and the landscape turns into a palette of riotous colours. In winter, snow lights up the landscape and the population grows manifold as the workers involved in the car testing industry arrive in the area.

Adrenalin-filled activities or a leisurely holiday Gällivare in the summer has lots of different activities to offer for both adults and children, whether you want to enjoy the silence or are looking for an adrenalin-filled holiday. Gällivare stretches from the forested areas up into the beautiful mountains, which means there are many different activities to choose from. Go riding, take a trip by horse and cart, hire a bike, go fishing in one of our many lakes, go sightseeing, visit a museum, visit the merchants’ street and the office responsible for moving the community to make room for expansion of the mine – the choice is yours. If you want to visit the mountains, you can stay in comfort, eat well in a restaurant and spend your days hiking, flying in a helicopter, looking at plants and animals and enjoying the fresh air.
Visit a mine In Gällivare we have two mines, the copper mine Aitik and the iron ore mine LKAB. Aitik is an open-cast mine which opened in 1968 and today is one of the largest copper mines in Europe. They run guided tours which let you see some of the largest machines in the world in operation – the tyres on the trucks alone measure 4 metres in diameter! LKAB began mining operations already in the late 1800s. Mining takes place below ground and visitors can enter the mine via a road network stretching for miles in the dark. You will also get to hear more about the project to move the community. NOTE! For safety reasons there is a lower age limit on the mine tours, contact the Tourist Information Office for more information.

Discover the World Heritage Site Laponia
Midnight Sun from the best vantage point
Laponia is a natural and cultural World Heritage Site where you can discover the lands on which the Sami have lived and worked for thousands of years. There are traces of humans having lived in the area as far back as 7000 years. The scenery is beautiful, the silence deafening and the stillness majestic. The magnificent scenery in Laponia varies from deep coniferous forests to soaring mountains. The varied fauna complements the national parks and nature reserves located on the 9,400 square kilometre site. The easiest way to get here is by bus from Gällivare. Stay the night or come for a day trip!
Just a few kilometres from the centre of Gällivare lies Dundret, a low mountain in the centre of town which is perfect for easy hiking and bike trips. When the weather is clear you can see oneeleventh of the area of Sweden from the top of the mountain. This is also the perfect vantage point from which to enjoy the magical Midnight Sun. In summer, there is a bus service from the town up to the mountain top every evening. Here you can enjoy the view from the best seats in the house and actually see the sun turn at the horizon!
