Dream On By Ella Durham Brenda closed the door on the bombsite which was sometimes known as Sam’s bedroom. She made her way slowly down the stairs, her arms loaded up with an enormous pile of dirty laundry. She strained to see over the top of it,; her husband James’ filthy football socks tickling her nose. She staggered to the utility room and threw the bundle down gratefully onto the floor. “Phew!” she said out loud, rubbing her nose and trying to disperse the awful smell of the socks from her nostrils, “I don’t know how we can generate so much laundry in just one week. And hardly any of it is mine. I bet there’s still more lying around under Sam’s bed. Fourteen-year-olds never seem to know where the dirty laundry basket is.” As Brenda began sorting out the items on the floor into various piles, she started to daydream. ‘If I had one wish and won the lottery, I’d employ a maid or maybe three, to keep our fabulous new house clean and tidy and to do all the laundry while I luxuriated on a hammock in The Seychelles for a month or two. Just a nice little break from the drudgery, that’s all I ask. Oh, what a wonderful idea:, just me and James, able to re-light our fire and have some “us” time again while Sam stayed with his big brother in Swindon. How marvellous would that be? We’d have a bottle of chilled champers or, maybe, a magnum of the stuff and some exotic seafood appetisers to munch on before James and I were served our sumptuous dinner overlooking the ocean. But no caviar I don’t really like caviar although I’ve never tasted it. But what’s the use of asking for that? No-one ever listens to me.”
4
Idly, she pulled up the fly zip on her husband’s paint spattered, DIY shorts and tossed them into the machine. ‘We could fly there in our own private jet,’ she thought, dreamily. ‘I would tell the pilot to land on our private airstrip near our swish mansion which we’d had built just for this very purpose. That’s after we’d paid off the mortgages on our Dave and Diane’s house, of course, and set up a savings trust for young William. Naturally, we couldn’t leave Jerry and Kelly out of the winnings. They’d really love a new house …or a car. Theirs isn’t really big enough since William was born. Well, we could pay for both if they wanted it. And we’d donate a large sum to our animal charities and Africa. You can’t forget Africa, can you?’ She smiled wistfully then sighed. Shaking her head back to reality, she leaned out of the utility room and called into the empty hallway. “Sam! Sam! Are you there? Can you hear me? Is there any more dirty laundry hiding under your bed?” There was no reply. Brenda’s youngest son lay on his stomach in the lounge, his fingers jabbing away madly at the controls of the Playstation 3, his eyes fixed on the TV screen which showed he was on level five of the game with a chance to beat his personal best score. “Sam! SAM! Come here when I’m speaking to you, please,” shouted Brenda. Sam grunted, slowly clicked off the handset and strolled into the hall. “What?” he said to his mother, sulkily. “I’m busy. It’s taken me ages to get to that part of Death Torturer 4.” Brenda let out a deep breath. Kids. Who’d have ‘em? You had to shout to make yourself heard - they never listened to anything which was said to them;, certainly not in this house, anyway.

There was never a thought for anyone or anything else - unless it involved sport or pop music. It was a wonder Sam even noticed if his parents existed.! He always seemed to be away in a world of his own - ignoring his mum. Typical teenager, she concluded. “Yesterday, I asked you to go and tidy up your room. But I see it still looks like a bomb’s hit it. Didn’t you hear me ask you to do that?” Brenda enquired. Sam said nothing. “And I told you to put your bike away in the garage last night - and it’s still in the back garden. Didn’t you hear me ask you to do that, either?” Sam shrugged. Brenda tried once more. “Well, did you get those prescriptions from the chemist on your way back from school today, like I asked you to?” Sam made a face. Brenda felt her innards scream. “Well, thank you very much, Sam,” she declared. “I may as well save my breath. You never listen to a word I say. You never take any notice of things I ask to be done. It’s not too much to ask for you to do as I say, is it?” she added, angrily. Sam turned red. Brenda shook her head in dismay. “Oh, never mind. Just go and bring me all the remaining laundry which may be vegetating underneath your bed, and any more of your Dad’s casuals in his sports bag and shower room. It would be a great help. Thank you.” Sam slunk away, shoulders dropping and muttering, “Ohhhh Godddddd!” under his breath. After some time, he re-appeared at the utility room door. “There’s my Foo Fighters T-shirt, and I found Dad’s jeans, his navy- coloured sweat shirt and a pair of… these.” Sam curled up his lip and held up a rather dapper pair of bright orange and black striped boxer shorts which had the words,

Dream On continued ‘Easy Tiger!’ written on the bottom. Brenda grabbed the undies from her son and blushed, slightly. “Yes, well, ahem…” she coughed, “thank you, Sam. What took you so long anyway? All you’ve brought me are these few things.” Sam opened his mouth to reply but his mother held up her hand to stop him. “Oh, never mind! Just push them all into the washing machine, would you?” Sam hesitated. “Now, if you please!” Brenda said, her impatience showing in her flushed cheeks. The stress of the past few weeks was getting her down. Her son never took any notice of her - or anything she said. If only she could get away, just for a little holiday. She and James hadn’t had a break for ages. Well, it wasn’t really possible ever since he’d been made redundant. Life had been hard these past few months but Brenda had tried not to let it show. Scrimping and scraping, that’s the way. Keep your chin up. There are those who are much worse off than you, she would remind herself. But, now, when their rent was overdue, Sam was in desperate need of new trainers and the electric bill still lay on the table unpaid, well... if only…. “Okay,” replied Sam. He pushed all of the clothes into the machine. Brenda closed the door, added the powder and softener and, switched it on to a heavily soiled wash. As the wash programme began, Brenda realised that she hadn’t checked the pockets firstto empty them before washing. It was something she always had to do because it never occurred to anyone else.
6
“Mum, don’t you empty out the pockets before putting the clothes in the machine?” Sam asked. Brenda felt her heart constrict - proof, if any were needed, that she was the one who had to remember to do it. “Yes. I’ve always told you to do that but, as usual, you never seem to listen to a word I say!” “Well, it’s just that I saw something upstairs poking out of a corner of Dad’s jeans, something which you wouldn’t want to see in the washing machine.” Sam shifted his weight from hip to hip. “Yeeeeess,” breathed Brenda, steeling herself for what Sam was about to say. “A lottery ticket. It was in his back pocket. He must have forgotten about it. I was about to tell you but…” Sam shrugged. Brenda stayed silent. “I checked the numbers on my computer, against the slip you fill in at the supermarket to choose your numbers. Mum, it was a jackpot winner. I’m not kidding. We had the winning ticket all along in Dad’s jeans!” Sam looked ashen. Brenda couldn’t speak. They both stooped down to the washing machine door and stared at the little round window. Brenda saw the jeans tumbling around in the soapy water inside; the jeans which held the solution to all their financial worries. She felt sick as her heart sank. She straightened up and faced her son. She could not, would not, let the crushing, bitter disappointment show. “Well, never mind, Sam,” she croaked, swallowing the lump in her throat and blinking back her tears. “What we’ve never had, we’ll not miss, I dare say.” She forced herself to believe it, while, inside, she was crying buckets. “We won’t have to miss it, Mum. Look!” Sam opened up his hand and in it lay the jackpot ticket, in perfect condition. “I took it from one of Dad’s pockets, because I was emptying them out upstairs before coming down and putting them in the wash, like you’ve always told us to. Mum, we’re rich!!!!!”

UK TV in AndalucĂa What does the future hold? I’m frequently asked this question and the truthful answer is that no one really knows for sure. In this part of Spain we have already lost access to some channels following the launch and deployment of the first new Astra satellite at the end of 2012. I hope that the following frequently asked questions and responses will help inform you about the changes that have already happened and those that are likely to happen over the coming months.
Why are things changing? The existing satellites, which we commonly call Astra 2 (2A, 2B & 2D) have reached or are nearing the end of their useful life and require replacement. In fact, 2D failed earlier than expected and was replaced on a temporary basis by Astra 1N last year. This will be used until summer 2013 when it will then be moved into its’ permanent position within the Astra 1 cluster.
When will the new satellites be in place? The first one, Astra 2F, was launched around October/November last year and was brought into use in early December. Astra 2E is due for launch in May/June 2013 and Astra 2G is due for launch in the first quarter of 2014.
Why have we lost some of our channels? The loss of Channel 5 and others was the result of those channels being transferred on to Astra 2F. The coverage from this satellite is very different from the one it replaced. It has a much stronger but narrower beam focussed primarily on the UK and although many other parts of Spain can still receive the signal from this satellite, here in Andalucia, the signal from this new beam is too weak to be picked up by the dishes currently used in this region.
Will we lose more channels in summer 2013 as rumoured? At the moment it does look likely that we are likely to lose access to BBCs, ITVs Channel 4, E4, More4 and others in the coming months. BBC has stated that they will move further channels on to 2E during the summer of 2013 although no exact dates are known yet. It appears likely that ITV channels, Channel 4 etc. will also be moved to 2E around the same time, although there has been no solid confirmation of that as yet. Realistically, we will simply have to wait until July/August 2013 and see what happens then.
Why is it assumed that the channels will be lost when they move to 2E? This is because all current information suggests that 2E will have similar coverage to 2F, indicating that if the beams are indeed similar, we are unlikely to be able to pick up the signals here.
8
However, we won’t know for sure until 2E is launched and deployed.
Will I get the signal if I use a bigger dish? You might but it is not guaranteed. In the Martos area, it appears the signal from 2F can be picked up using a 1.8m dish, however, on the coast the signal can’t be picked up even using dishes between 2m and 3m.
Will I still be able to receive Sky subscription channels? At the moment most Sky package channels are still available. Most Sky channels are currently broadcast from 2A and Eutelsat and are carried on a European beam. I suspect that Sky package channels might still be available for some time yet, but again no one really knows for sure.
Can I get TV via the internet?
Yes & No. For successful streaming of TV over the internet, you will require a fairly fast speed connection and no download limit. You will need a minimum download speed of 2Mbp/s, and preferably 3Mbp/s, even at peak times for TV streaming to work successfully. TV streaming is very high in data usage over the internet (typically 400Mb-500Mb per hour) which is why an unlimited download connection is needed. In rural and remote areas many people can only access internet via satellite systems some of which nowadays offer speeds of up to 20Mb download and 6Mb upload, however, depending upon package, these systems can have monthly usage limits which would not make them ideal for using for regular TV streaming. The Tooway satellite broadband system does now offer an unlimited data allowance as one of their package choices. You can find details of this system on www.inlandcomputerservices.com/ tooway/ If you have any other questions I’ll be happy to try to answer them for you, but my advice for now is to wait and see what happens in the next few months then seek the appropriate solution if indeed your favourite channels disappear. Yes. Why not try www.filmon.com which offers a range of TV and entertainment channels over the internet. You can view this on your computer or may be able to link your PC to your TV. You will probably also have seen adverts recently offering internet TV boxes which fit between your internet connection and connect to your TV via HDMI lead and operate similar to a set top box. Apart from the initial cost of the box, these systems will also have a monthly service charge.
Are these suitable for any internet connection?

An Elephant for a keeper... What did you say? That goalie looks like an elephant? No, that elephant IS a goalie. In your wildest dreams could this ever be true? Well, yes is the answer. Way back at the turn of the 19th century, Sanger’s Circus allowed their performing elephants to take on the paying public in penalty shoot- out competitions. In a piece of advertising genius, the circus put forth a challenge that no- one could beat Charlie the elephant. The rules drawn up stated that both the elephant and the opponent should take four penalty kicks, each using a ball about six times the normal size. The winner was the one who scored the most goals. Whilst the competition was run up and down the country as the circus travelled around, the most memorable stories were created after professional footballers from Queens Park Rangers took up the challenge and publicly stated they could defeat Charlie. Four of the players were brave enough to try their luck - and unfortunately, three failed. Hope lay in the form of William Keech.
14
Keech was born in Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire, in either 1872 or 1876. This town is home today to Rushden & Diamonds football club. He signed for Queens Park Rangers from Leicester Fosse in August 1899, and made his debut against Tottenham. By all accounts he was quite a character and a very good athlete, winning three handicaps and numerous boxing titles. His brother Ben also played for the Rangers Reserve side. The story goes that when the team was in Leicester, the proprietors of Sanger’s Circus issued their challenge on behalf of their star, the ’Elephant Footballer.’ Keech was one of the four players to accept. When Keech faced the beast, who was eyeing him very closely, he made out that he was going to place his shot in one corner and as the elephant raised the wrong foot, Keech scored in the opposite corner. He went on to repeat this trick successfully but when Keech took his turn in goal, the elephant copied the same trick and scored twice in the same fashion.
This resulted in a replay and Keech once again deceived the elephant with the same tactic, winning the competition by three goals to two. He was awarded the cup which had been offered as a prize and legend has it that the elephant was never defeated again on his travels. As for Keech, he was transferred to Brentford in 1902 after making 69 appearances and scoring six goals. He later returned to the club as a member of the training staff and the 1914-15 team photo depicts him as a trainer.

In Tony Williamson’s book on the history of the R’s, he says that Keechhe became a billiards marker on his retirement from football. The book shows an interesting pub advert with a picture of Keech; it states that he was, ’Late of Queen’s Park Rangers’ and the marker in the fine billiard saloon. It also says that this was Queen’s Park Rangers headquarters,’ and that both home and away results would be posted up in the saloon bar. Predictably, that pub in the Harrow Road was called the Elephant and Castle’.
Unfortunately the story doesn’t have a happy ending for Charlie. In 1901, when Sanger's visited Penarth in Wales, the animals were parading through the town along with all the other attractions of the circus. Sadly, Charlie collapsed in the middle of the main street. The locals did what they could for him and according to the local paper, five bottles of whisky and two of rum were poured down his throat in an effort to revive him. All was to, no avail, though, and sadly, poor old Charlie was a goner. The five-ton star footballer was towed to a piece of wasteland behind the Cefn Mably pub, where he was buried.

Saydo Male Voice Singers The singers were formed by a group of Saydo men who enjoyed singing. We first got together in September 2009 and did our first public performance seven weeks later at Hotel Saydo (which can be seen on You Tube). Since then, we have gone from strength to strength -- even more so since Kate Perks joined us as our pianist and musical director. Although our main aim was just to get together and have some fun singing, we have performed at various venues such as bars, functions and weddings, all of which seem to have been thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. It is a little disappointing that we only have about 10 full time members and we would dearly like to increase our numbers to make a better and bigger sound. Therefore, if you enjoy singing and a bit of banter -- it doesn't even matter if you're not a good singer! -- and you don’t have to be a Saydo resident to join us. We are open to all and meet most Tuesdays at 1:30pm at Saydo. For more information, give Gordon a call on 680-160-524.

Problem Page Dear Karen, After retiring and moving to Spain 2 years ago I have to admit I'm not sure if we've done the right thing. As much as I love my husband, he is driving me insane!!! After leading busy lives in the UK, working and having family commitments now we find ourselves living 24/7 in our own company, with not a lot to do. We do have friends and socialise a couple of nights a week, which is a welcome escape but the rest of the time we hardly ever speak. The conversation is limited and other than what we're having for the next meal we have nothing in common!! Except for the weather, I think we'd have more of a life back in the Uk, at least I'd be able to see my family & friends. Help!! Anne
Dear Anne, You would be surprised how many people find themselves in your situation.......You got used to putting everything and everyone else first. You and your husband spent so much time working and looking after your family you neglected your relationship and you have lost the ¨knack ¨of communicating with each other. You both need to sit down and discuss how you're feeling, maybe without realising it, in the past you were so caught up with work, raising the children, house work etc etc... that you didn´t notice that you were not giving each other much of your time. It could be that in the past, he has felt left out and just got used to not talking with you, he may not even have noticed any change´ It is important to talk..... look for pastimes you want to do together, What did you do together when you were courting??? Try having DATE nights, doing things you both enjoy and you will soon recapture that wonderful relationship you had before the kids arrived. Karen

Dear Karen, I live near Antequera and I've met lots of lovely people here and had become great friends with 5 or 6 of them. We saw each other & socialised regularly. The problem is some of them can be quite bitchy about other people that are not part of our "clique". And when I've disagreed with what they were saying they have fallen out with me. Not just the one I disagreed with, but them all!! Now I feel isolated, I miss their company but don't want to be part of this sort of thing. Katherine
Dear Katherine.. It is difficult when you feel isolated and alone, especially when your in a foriegn country. But this is a question of Personal Values, and ¨bitching¨about other people clearly crosses the boundries of your values. When you felt uncomfortable about the situation, you did the right thing to disagree with them...... and if they can not see your point of view, then they are not the right ¨clique¨of people for you to be friends with. Ask your self this question.... Would you have chosen to be friends with these people in the UK?.... If not, don´t be friends with them here just because their English. Stay true to your values and make new friends who are on the same wave length as you... you will have a happier life, safe in the knowledge that your friends don´t ¨bitch¨ about you behind your back. Well done for being brave enough to challenge them, you have walked away the better person, and if there were more people like you around `this sort if thing¨ wouldn´t happen so often. Karen

Out and About
Formula 1 testing - Jerez February 2013 After many years of best intentions, I finally made the effort to visit the Formula 1 pre-season testing at Jerez de la Frontera and even for those who are not diehard racing car fans, it’s a great experience and very reasonably priced.
This year’s testing ran from Tuesday 4th Feb until Friday 8th Feb and so the 3 amigos decided to head off late on Monday afternoon, staying in a central hostal for a couple of nights, in order to enjoy 2 full days at the track before heading home on Wednesday afternoon. Accomodation Cheap and cheerful was the plan and we found the Hostal Fenix in the centre of Jerez main town was good value at 85,00 Euro for 2 nights with breakfast (3 people sharing a room). Underground parking was available at 10 Euro per night, not to mention essential, in the busy town centre where finding a free parking space is difficult. Despite the hostal being tucked down a side street, the central area was a few minutes walk.
22
Food and drink 3 chaps, away from the bosses for a couple of nights, so the considerations for healthy eating were perhaps not the top priority. On the first night, a visit to 100 montaditos resulted in sampling of cervezas and menu C consisting of 17 warm bread rolls with various fillings for just 12 Euro. We were a little more sensible on evening 2, opting for a 3 course menu at 10 Euro. Jerez central has a good range of bars and restaurants as you might expect.
Getting to/from the track and lessons learned For the first day of testing, we decided to catch a taxi from the hostal to the circuit - 16 Euro out and 18 Euro back. The second day, we made a better decision and decided to drive and park at the circuit - which turned out to be just 1 Euro for the entire day ! (Now we know for next year...) Entrance prices Two types of ticket, the first priced at 10 Euro (down near the chicane) and the second, which is much better value at 20 Euro, giving access to most of the circuit, including the main home straight and clear views of the pits. The Action With the exception of Fernando Alonso this year, all of the top F1 racing drivers appeared, performing numerous laps at a time, before heading back into the team garage for tweaks and fine-tuning to the cars. For me, this turned out to be a very interesting part of the day, watching from the main stand with binoculars in hand, sat high enough to spy over the top of the barriers which each team had in front of their garage, monitoring the worker ants behind the scenes, performing their precision tasks.
The 10 Euro Ticket Views
The 20 Euro Ticket Views
Arrival on day 1 delivered perfect timing for us to see the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg zoom through the chicane and then catch fire on the rear left hand side (later confirmed as an electrical problem). Day 2 also brought problems for Mercedes, with new team member Lewis Hamilton suffering rear brake failure and zooming off the track and into a tyre wall - unfortunately we just missed it, but saw the truck deliver the broken and battered car to the pits.

Essential items to take Binoculars, a good quality camera which has decent zoom and video, don’t forget the fully charged batteries and spares for your camera. Sun hat and/or suncream - a very sunny 2 days, resulting in a pink forehead. If you have a smartphone, download a stopwatch app before you go - it makes you feel involved as you time the drivers doing their laps. If you’re a souvenir hunter, take plenty of cash - team t-shirts from 40 Euro. If everything goes to plan, I’ll definitely be making the trip to Jerez again next February ! TSP

Tai Chi and the 21st century It was in the early 60s when I was first introduced to the `new` martial art called `Tai Chi.’ As a keen practitioner of all things martial arts, I had studied karate, kendo and judo for some 10 years. My first introduction to this new art was a weekend course in London: day one, the background and history; day two, the `forms`-- a set-down series of exercises of which there are four: forms 10, 16, 24 and the `long form` which contains 108 moves. At the end of the weekend I returned home convinced I had discovered the meaning of life. It turned out not to be so, but over the years I continued my Tai Chi practice, and find it a great aid to maintaining a good level of fitness --
especially as we approach our later years. Tai Chi was first devised, improved and practised some 2500 years ago by the early Chinese Taoist priests. They set down the first known Tai Chi movements by watching and copying the actions of animals such as the snake, heron and wolf. These movements were originally used to promote a form of selfdefence which in later years, developed into karate.

In the sixth century, another of the Taoist priests, Zahng Sanfeng, put together a series of 36 movements and combined them with deep, slow breathing. Since then, those early movements have evolved into various Tai Chi styles. The Yang style is probably the most popular and is practised worldwide. More than 200 million people practice Tai Chi, and every day in the parks and plazas of China and other

Oriental countries, people can be seen carrying out their daily Tai Chi routines. Tai Chi has been proved to be of benefit to respiration, good posture and mobility, as well as being an aid to lowering blood pressure and reducing stress. A daily practice of 20 minutes is all that is required to improve your health and general well -being. It is a slow and simple method of exercise, and therefore ideal for all ages.

The Search for Perfection We live in a world that constantly requires us to be perfect, the perfect house, the perfect body, the perfect relationship....... but what exactly is perfect? What are we measuring ourselves, and the success of our lives, against? Last week I was a guest on a radio show discussing the reality behind the diet and fashion industries. I was shocked to hear a fellow guest, a model, reveal that she was often made to wear a ‘fat suit’ when modelling size 14 clothes as it was perceived that a ‘real’ size 14 would not have fine enough features! It would seem that the majority of benchmarks we use to measure our success are in fact complete fantasy. The pictures we see in magazines are artificially created and airbrushed to within an inch of their megapixels! They do not realistically represent the typical person on the street, or the house they live in. Yet we, on some level, aspire to look like, be like, live like the images we see. No wonder so many of us feel unfulfilled and discontented with our own lives. We are trying to achieve the unachievable!
Would you be willing for a moment to accept that you are absolutely okay just as you are? That there is nothing in your life, or about you, that needs to be fixed, improved or repaired? That you are already a magnificent being just waiting for an opportunity to reveal yourself? Just take a moment to receive that message, and accept, in the words of Panache Desai, ‘’that we can only ever be who we are and at some point that has to be good enough’’. Stop now and take a deep breath. Really feel what is arising within you. Are you thinking that these words are ridiculous, that they don’t relate to you in the position that you are in. How can what you are in this moment be enough? What feelings do these words evoke? Anger, frustration, sadness, tears? Allow yourself be still and feel. Where within your life are you feeling pain or struggling? Your finances, your weight, your health, or maybe in the area of your relationships? All can be eased by becoming still, feeling the emotions that come up from within and allowing them to flow through you.
26
Most of us choose not to do this, at the moment of feeling pain we choose to distract ourselves; we swallow our feelings, stuffing them down with food or drink, or Facebook, or work. In our world it is not socially acceptable for us to feel these deep emotions, yet none of them are wrong, they are neither correct nor incorrect, they just are. The stress that we experience when we feel these emotions becomes stuck if we do not allow it to flow through and out of us. Once stuck it becomes distress, creating discomfort and dis-ease within the body. Allowing us to truly feel what is present within us allows us to release the energy that causes us pain. By releasing this energy we can relax.
By remaining in the moment and breathing through these emotions we can find peace in every moment, whatever our circumstances. So, this month, whenever you feel less than perfect, realise that you are judging yourself, become focused upon your breath and breathe. Bring yourself back to the present moment and allow yourself to feel whatever emotions arise. Just allow them to flow and continue until you reach a place of peace. There is truly nothing wrong with you, you do not need to be anything other than what you are being in this moment, by virtue of this you are indeed, perfect. They call it Puppy Love I'm just a 6 month old puppy Heartbroken and alone, Can someone say what I did wrong, To be dumped so far from home? How will I get my meal tonight? Cos now it's getting dark; And I've been here since they dumped me, Too terrified to bark. Three days I've sat here waiting, Perhaps they will return. But now my tummy's empty I guess I'll never learn. I found my way to a village. Could this be my new home? But the other dogs attacked me, And I'm once again alone. I've heard talk of a refuge, That's just outside of town; The only hope that I have left, But the refuge has shut down. Four months I've been abandoned, And no more can I possibly give. I've lost the will to carry on, And no longer want to live. I've tried to be a good dog, All I wanted was a home; But that was far too much to ask, So now I die alone. And I know this is my final night, As I slowly shut my eyes; I never ever found a friend, So they will never see me cry. By Alan Brian Pepi's Refuge 28

Review - Casa Joaquin Juaquin has been in the Hosteliery Business for the last 15 years & has run "Casa Juaquin " with his family for the last 2 years. Wife Maria is the Chef, son Juaquin junior & daughter Eva are the camareros, helping Dad in front of house. It is probably the only restaurant in Spain that you will be greeted with "Merry Xmas" and "Happy New Year" all year round!!! Always the joker, Juaquin is the perfect Host & has his finger on the pulse at all times. The spacious Restaurant & well stocked Bar area makes it a very comfortable location for a drink & Tapas, leisurely lunch or evening meal at any time of year, and is one of the few places that you would dress up to go for that something a little bit more special. Our evening meal (8 of us all together) consisted of Main Courses, Pork Steaks in Red Wine, Pork Steaks in Pepper Sauce, Duck a l'orange, Spare Ribs, Chicken Pinchitos, & the House Salad. All meals arrived on huge plates with over generous portions and were so well presented they looked more than good enough to eat!! Infact the photos are here to prove it. The Pork & Chicken were very tender & tasty but Lyn who had the Duck commented that it was a little bit on the tough side which was surprising as it is her favourite dish at Juaquins & was the 1st time it hadn't been tender. Four of the party had desserts as the other half were full to the b r i m , t h e y h a d Fresh Strawberries & Cream, Caramel Flans & Fresh Pineapple which were deliciously presented and devoured with no trace of any of it. After coffees & paying the bill the overall verdict was: ServiceExcellent, Food- Excellent, Value for money, Excellent, you certainly get your moneys worth, will we go again?? Definitely!!!

Juana of Castile remembered on a visit to Granada Guitar music fills the square. The narrow alleys of the Albayzin drop sharply away, revealing an unobstructed view of the Alhambra and the sugar-frosted Sierra Nevada beyond, glistening under the warm February sun. Granada was the second stop on this coach trip. 40 or so people from Alameda to Mollina who had boarded the coach in the chilly early morning were now dispersed across a gloriously sunny Granada. First stop of the day was Alhama de Granada, a town famed for its waters. Its name comes from the Arabic Al Hamma, meaning hot springs, but the Romans had discovered the springs and built baths here long before the Moors arrived. The town sits on top of one edge of a gorge occupied by the River Alhama. The sandstone cliffs on the far side are pockmarked with dark recesses -home to the sleek, jet-black birds dancing in the air below. The industrial pounding of the river powering unseen below draws us down the steep cobbled track towards the old flour mills. The zigzag path, once busy with workers and horse-drawn carts, is devoid of movement now. Before returning to the coach, there was just time for a coffee in one of the bars around the Plaza de la Constitución. Still sporting banners from 32
the weekend’s wine festival, the square seemed hung over. Four or five men stood drinking outside a bar, indulging in a tuneless rendering of some English or American pop song, while a tubby tabby mooched around the table legs. On arrival in Granada, I took the path down the side of the Alhambra to the Plaza Nuevo and lunched looking up at the Torre de la Vella. Outside the Chancellaria a handful of protestors were demanding justice for the victims of Granada’s part in Spain’s baby theft scandal. I was reminded of the story of the mother of Charles V. Juana, Queen of Castile, was the second daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella, the so-called ‘Catholic Kings’. She was married to Philip, the ‘Handsome of Austria.’ It was a love match on her part, but he was constantly unfaithful. They had six children between 1489 and 1507, all of whom survived to adulthood. On Isabella’s death, Juana inherited the kingdom of Castile and in 1506, leaving all but one of her children behind in Flanders, she returned to Castile with her husband to assert her claim to the throne. Both husband and father wanted to have her declared incapable of ruling due to mental instability so they could rule in her stead. An ensuing power struggle between the two men came to an abrupt conclusion in September that year when Philip contracted the plague and died.
The legend of Juana the Mad begins about this time, although there are accounts of some extreme behaviour prior to this. She was grieving and heavily pregnant but stories of torchlight processions across Spain with the coffin of her dead husband may be explained in part by a promise to bury him in Granada, coupled with the need to move in front of the spreading plague that had carried him off. In 1509, Ferdinand visited Juana at Arcos de la Llana, near Burgos. The master schemer attempted to persuade her to relinquish power to him but she refused. She also declined to move to Burgos, fearing that the walls of the town would imprison her. This was no irrational fear as she had been kept a virtual prisoner on her mother’s orders once before. Ferdinand acquiesced, but took her six-year-old son Ferdinand with him to Burgos.
Isabella and Ferdinand began work on the Royal Chapel in Granada cathedral before Isabella’s death in 1504 and it was completed in 1517. The bodies of Isabella, Ferdinand and Philip the Handsome were moved to the Royal Chapel in 1521. Juana, the queen who never reigned, was eventually laid to rest alongside the other members of her dysfunctional family. The cathedral was our last port of call before returning to the coach. As I tried to catch a glimpse of the last rays of the dying sun on the Sierra Nevada, I reflected on some of the darker stories that lay underneath the perfect picture postcard image of the city. While it was customary for kings to bring up their heirs and educate them in the way of kingship, Juana was afraid that Ferdinand’s real motive was to hold her son hostage so that she would be constrained to follow him. Instead of following, she gave open display to her grief, eschewing food and drink and standing outside in the cold all night staring in the direction in which the boy had gone.
This was not going Ferdinand’s way. If Juana died, her son Charles would be declared king, which in turn would bring his paternal grandfather, the Emperor Maximillian, to Spain as regent. Juana won this battle and her son was returned. Not to be beaten, Ferdinand had her forcibly removed -along with her two children and the coffin of her late husband -- to the castle of Tordesillas. She was 29. Here the captive queen remained until her death in 1555, while first her father and then her son Charles V ruled Spain in her name.

Recipe Tangy Lemon Tart For the Pastry
250g plain flour , plus extra for dusting 70g icing sugar 125g unsalted butter , cubed 2 egg yolks
For The Filling · · · ·
5 eggs 140g caster sugar 150ml double cream juice 2-3 lemon (about 100ml/3.5fl oz) and 2 tbsp lemon zest
Method To make the pastry, mix the flour and icing sugar in a bowl. Rub the butter into the flour with your fingers until crumbly. Mix in the egg yolks. If the pastry is still too dry, add 1-2 tbsp water until it comes together. Roll into a ball. Flatten out the pastry with your hands, wrap the dough in cling film, then chill for at least 30 mins. While the pastry is chilling, make the filling. Beat all the ingredients, except for the zest, together. Sieve the mixture, then stir in the zest. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to about the thickness of a £1 coin, then lift into a 23cm tart tin. Press down gently on the bottom and sides, then trim off any excess pastry. Stab a few holes in the bottom with a fork and put back in the fridge for 30 mins. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Line the tart with foil and fill with rice or dried beans. Bake for 10 mins, then remove the tart tin from the oven, discard the foil, and bake for another 20 mins until biscuity. When the pastry is ready, remove it from the oven, pour in the lemon mixture and bake again for 30-35 mins until just set. Leave to cool, then remove the tart from the tin and serve at room temperature or chilled.
