Inland Solutions Magazine - October/November Octubre/Noviembre 2015 -

Introduction

Hello Everyone,

Hola a todos,

Here´s hoping that you´ve all had a great summer and enjoyed your holidays, visitors and events in your area. Since the last edition ( August / September) I´ve had lots of positive feedback concerning the magazine. I think we´ve succeeded in bringing you the best reliable publication with the most interesting content in this area. The size and quality of the magazine too, is a hit with both advertisers and readers.

The article on page 42, about Alzheimers Disease and the spice Tumeric is a must read. I have started taking Tumeric religiously every morning since reading this article as Alzheimers Disease is in my family. I sprinkle a quarter to a half teaspoon in a shot glass of water, stir and swallow . Alternately if you can´t take it this way you can always increase your visits to the Five Rivers Indian Restaurant in Fuente de Piedra where Paul assures me that Tumeric is used in all of his Curry Recipes.

Articles from the world of Football, Nick & Mo, Jenny and of course the 2nd part of Paco Sanchez Arjona´s short story amongst others are well worth reading too.

We also have some new advertisors in this edition so if you are local to these businesses please support them. Without our local Advertisers I wouldn´t be able to produce the magazine at all. If you have any interesting news, views or opinions regarding the content in the magazine send them to the email address below.

Spanish town abolishes bullfights in favour of books And the score is: Books 1, Bullfights 0. In a refreshing change for a country that loves its bullfights, the Spanish town of Villafranca de los Caballeros, situated about 80 miles south of Madrid, has decided to cancel its annual bullfight and use the nearly €20,000 saved on books and school supplies for local children. A bullfight has been the central attraction of the small town’s fiesta for over a decade, but enough is enough. “It’s a question of priorities,” said the town’s newly elected socialist mayor, Julián Bolaños. “There is a lot of unemployment in this town and many people simply don’t have money to buy school supplies for their children.” He estimated that the town, which has a population of 5,200, was spending as much as €18,000 a year to hold the annual event. The Beginning Of The End Of Bullfighting In Spain? The key here is that Bolaños is a socialist who was elected mayor of Villafranca de los Caballeros (the free town of gentlemen) in May’s local elections. He is not alone. Voters in Spain overwhelmingly backed new left-wing parties in these elections, and as a result the control of several important cities such as Madrid, Valencia and Alicante all changed hands. One of the effects of this switch has been the most serious challenge yet to the practice of bullfighting in Spain. Just a few examples: Manuela Carmena, the new mayor of Madrid, a traditional bastion of the bullfight, has said publicly that “not one euro of public money” will go toward bullfighting; in the city of Valencia the mayor, Joan Ribó, has likewise stated that no government money will go to finance any event in which bulls are killed; in Alicante, the bull run which has traditionally been a part of the city’s August festival was replaced by a cycling race, and the new government has said it plans to ban municipal land from being used in bullfights by 2017. It began with a ban on bullfighting in Catalonia in 2011, but now the push to abolish the so-called “sport” is gaining steam. As The Independent notes: “In the resort of Gandia, bullfighting has already been banned because, according to local officials, it amounts to animal abuse. In nearby Dénia, the annual bous a la mar, in which the bull eventually ends up being pushed into the sea, faces a local referendum before it will be staged again. Further north in Zaragoza, organisers of toros embolados, where firecrackers are attached to the bulls’ horns, have been told that they will no longer receive public money to put on their fiestas.”

6 - Inland Solutions Magazine - October/November Octubre/Noviembre 2015

Only Small Steps Animal rights activists in Spain have welcomed their actions but point out that more needs to be done, with more than 16,000 fiestas involving bulls being planned this year in some 3,000 municipalities across the country. These are events which frequently result in animal deaths, and where, in addition, spectators and participants are often injured, or even killed. The best-known of these is Pamplona’s San Fermin festival, made famous in Ernest Hemingway’s “Death in the Afternoon.” During the event, crowds run through the town chased by bulls, invariably leading to several gorings before the bulls are slaughtered.

Let’s hope that the move to modern day laws, which would outlaw bullfights and speak up for animal rights, will continue to grow, as Spain moves beyond its violent treatment of animals in the past.

Interesting Articles

Bullfighting, the burning bull, the running of the bulls and other events are world-renowned and closely tied in with Spain’s cultural image, bringing in tourism and helping the economy to thrive. So, there are some huge obstacles to overcome, but change has started to happen. Last week, in an historic move, the Spanish town of Trigueros del Valle voted unanimously to define dogs and cats as “non-human residents,” giving them rights similar to men and women in the area.

Whether you eat them steamed, mashed, or baked, there are lots of good reasons to love sweet potatoes! Here are some surprising health benefits of this orange veggie that contain healthy doses of vitamins A and C

Vitamin B6 Sweet potatoes support our health in many ways, but the star nutrient that they provide is vitamin B6. Sweet potatoes are one of the richest plant-based sources of vitamin B6. Other plantbased sources of B6 include potatoes, sunflower seeds, spinach, and bananas, but sweet potato surpasses them all in B6 content. 1. This B vitamin is crucial for maintaining healthy blood. Your body uses B6 in the process that carries oxygen through your bloodstream. 2. You also need vitamin B6 to properly break down carbohydrates. Without it, you’d suffer from reduced energy levels. 3. Our bodies also use the vitamin B6 found in sweet potatoes to support brain health and mental health. There is research suggesting that B6 deficiency is linked to depression and to ADHD. 4. Support your liver by eating B6-rich foods like sweet potatoes! This vitamin is a key to helping your liver break down chemicals in your body, so that your liver can process them properly.

Other Health Benefits of Sweet Potatoes Beyond B6, there are some other compelling reasons to eat more sweet potatoes. 5. There are many good food sources of vitamin A, but a 2007 study suggested that sweet potatoes do the best job of raising blood levels of vitamin A, especially in children. If you want to maximize that absorption, include a little bit of fat with your sweet potatoes. A drizzle of olive oil or a side of sliced avocado is all it takes. 6. The pigments that give sweet potatoes their vibrant, orange color are called anthrocyanins. These compounds are powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. 7. Sweet potatoes provide 50 percent of your daily manganese, which is nothing to sneeze at. Manganese supports bone and skin health, and it helps control your blood sugar levels.

Hidden Gems In Gilena - The Tomillo Distillery

Located in a field, just outside the centre of the village, the first thing that strikes you is the smell. Although we live only a few kilometres from Gilena we have never actually been there. We have driven around it on our way to other villages and have Spanish friends who live there, but, until recently, have never found a reason to visit. What a pleasant surprise then it was when we made our first visit to Gilena to see the Tomillo Distillery. Gilena is a very pretty village of some 3,800 people and the first impression you get is that it is quite sleepy, with not a lot going on. How wrong this first impression is, because if you dig just a little below the surface Gilena is a very interesting place with a lot going on and

a rich history, much of which can be seen in the wonderful History and Modern Art Museum, 'Coleccion Museografica De Gilena', as well as the fascinating Antoniana cave, on the outskirts of the village, which we will write about in a separate article. Our reason for visiting on this occasion however was to see the tomillo, or thyme distillery. I must confess that neither I nor Mo had any idea at all of what a tomillo distillery was, or what it may look like. Located in a field, just outside the centre of the village, the first thing that strikes you is the smell.

14 - Inland Solutions Magazine - October/November Octubre/Noviembre 2015

I cannot say that I immediately recognised it as thyme, because it had rather a warm, apple like smell, but others who visited with us identified other aromas. The first impression of the set-up of the distillery was that it looked like something you would see in a picture of a moonshine still from the old west in America. There were huge piles of tomillo and in the centre was a massive stainless steel dome, which we were told was the lid of the caldero, the cauldron, where the tomillo was cooked. While we waited for the lid to be lifted on the batch that was being prepared, we met the boss, Jose Antonio, and his cousin, Pablo, who were working the cauldron. There are

two other people who work sieving the tomillo, to extract herbs for cooking. They explained that this distillery had been in operation since 1988 and that in the past most villages would have had the same thing, but this was the last remaining one in this area. The purpose of the cooking process is to obtain oil and from each 700 kilo batch of tomillo about 5 litres of oil is extracted, which is then sold to Bayer in Germany for use in the medical or perfume industries. The oil sells for between 110 euros, when the tomillo is in good supply and 140 euros, when dry weather causes a shortage, as this year.

Out and About With Nick & Mo 16 - Inland Solutions Magazine - October/November Octubre/Noviembre 2015

...this one last distillery is all there is left of a once thriving industry All of the work with the tomillo is done during June and July and as well as the tomillo, mejorana, or marjoram is also distilled in the same way. When you see the huge piles of herbs you realise just how much work goes into collecting them and this is done from the local sierras, either by the workers themselves or by villagers who collect and sell them on for a small price. When the brief tomillo season comes to an end the distillery remains in use to produce anis.

No sooner have the cooked herbs come out than Jose Antonio and Pablo are loading the caldero again. They put in what seems huge

If you do get the chance to visit you should take it and I am sure that Jose Antonio and Pablo would be pleased and proud to show you their wonderful distillery.

Out and About With Nick & Mo

Shortly after our arrival the huge lid on the caldero is opened and the process of removing the cooked herbs and the pure oil, that has dripped into a container below, begins. You can see from the picture just how big an amount of cooked tomillo comes out of the caldero and when this has dried it is used to fuel the fire underneath so there is no wastage.

amounts of herbs, treading them down as they go until it is full and then it is lid down and another 3 to 4 hours cooking. It may only be a short season, but it is incredibly hard work and very hot, so these guys really earn their money. There is an added benefit that both Jose Antonio and Pablo mentioned and that is that neither of them has had a cold since they have been working with the herbs! All in all it was a hugely interesting visit and I think that we came away with kind of mixed feelings. We certainly felt privileged to be allowed to see people engaged in a craft that, in one form or another, probably dates back over hundreds of years, but we also felt a little sad to think that this one last distillery is all there is left of a once thriving industry and those of us who visited that day are hopeful that it may long continue.

Citizens Advice Bureau Spain

Last Will and Testament for Spanish Assets As many of you will know the new regulations on Wills and Succession came into force in the middle of August whilst most of us were on the beach, on holiday or hiding in the shade. The new rules mean that when a person dies the law of the country in which they are a habitual resident at the time of death will apply to deal with their assets. The regulation also allows, though, for people to “opt out” of this and to choose for their assets to be dealt with under the laws of their own country. Since the announcement there has been a big rush of Ex Pats heading to their Lawyers to make changes to their wills. It’s important to remember that the 17th August was NOT a cut-off point and that you can still change your will to reflect the changes. What is also important is to consider your position globally. There are, as many people will be aware, big differences in the legal systems here in Spain and in England and Wales, or Scotland. Trusts, which are a normal tool in the UK to protect the next generation from Inheritance Tax, for example, do not exist in Spain, and therefore it is vitally important not just to translate the English Will into Spanish and add the clause to select English Law. It is therefore imperative that those with properties in Spain, make a separate will for their Spanish assets. Wills are very important documents, not just to ensure that the maker’s wishes are carried out after their death but also to ensure that those left behind do not have a big mess to deal with. Like any legal document it is important to get it right and ensure that everything is included and covered.

Also with our advice, members are able to make considerable savings on their transactions. We have made savings for members who in the future will be paying inheritance taxes; we achieve this by informing home owners on how to deal with inheritance tax issues. What Your Dog’s Barks Actually Mean Many dog owners have a hard time dealing with excessive barking, to the point where they become frustrated and upset, feeling completely hopeless as to how to stop it. Sound familiar? The biggest mistake we make in trying to solve the issue is forgetting that it’s a dog’s most natural instinct to bark and growl – it’s hardwired into them. Disciplining your canine companion for barking is counterproductive and extremely confusing for them, and can lead to an ongoing battle which is stressful and negative for all involved. The key to creating harmony in the home and lowering the intensity and frequency of your dog’s barking is to understand his motivation for it, and to work with him to calm his fears and anxieties. Shouting at him is not going to help the situation. Here are four main types of barking behavior, and what your dog is trying to tell you:

The Overexcited Welcome Home Bark If you return home from work to a barrage of noisy barking, scrabbling, jumping and spinning, where your dog is completely overexcited to the point of frenzy, you might be under the impression that this is their way of showing their undying love for you. While they are certainly happy to see you, he’s actually trying to say: “Your home, your home! I’m so glad you’re home!! I’ve been here on my own, bored out of my mind for hours waiting for you to come back, and now you’re finally here! Please don’t make me sit here alone again, let’s play instead, I’ve got so much energy.” Tip for improving your dog’s behavior: Don’t reward your dog’s boisterous behavior with praise and cuddles, but instead ignore them until they have calmed down and then go over and give them love and snuggles. You can also try to relieve some of their daytime boredom by giving them a toy or treat to play with.

The Attention Seeking Bark When your furry friend begins barking at a totally random time when there is seemingly nothing to spark it off, it is almost certainly attention seeking behavior. Whether it’s because they’re desperate for the toilet, hungry for dinner, or just in need of some love and attention, a loud bark is almost certain to grab your attention in the desired way, saying: “HELLO, did you forget about me? I’ve been sitting here like a good boy for ages, and you seem to have forgotten about me. Please pay me some attention. Why don’t you come and play with me, or maybe we could go for a walk, or you could you put some peanut butter in my Kong up for me to play with. Like NOW!!” 20 - Inland Solutions Magazine - October/November Octubre/Noviembre 2015

Visit Pepi's Refuge Adopt/Sponsor a dog page https://www.facebook.com/pepisrefugesponsorpage

Tip for improving your dog’s behavior: Whilst you don’t want to reward your dog for rowdy behavior, you also need to pay attention to their wants and desires. Ask your dog to calm down and stop barking, and then reward them by paying them the attention which they were likely seeking.

The Separation Anxiety Bark If your dog barks non-stop whenever they’re left on their own, even if you’re just in the next room, this is a sign that they’re suffering from separation anxiety. This is the kind of excessive barking that can drive you mad, disturb neighbors, and result in a very stressful situation for everyone involved. Effectively your dog is trying to call out for help, saying: “Please someone come and help me. I’m all alone in here and I can’t see where anyone is. Please come back and be with me, I just want to be loved, don’t abandon me in here all alone.” Tip for improving your dog’s behavior: Patience is the key to improving this situation. Wait until your dog’s barking subsides and then re-enter the room full of praise and even a treat. Your dog needs positive reassurance that nothing bad is going to happen when they’re left on their own. Shouting at them and telling them to stop is only going to confirm their fears that it’s bad to be left in the room on their own.

The “Who’s There, What Was That” Bark Every dog owner knows that feeling when you’re sitting down and relaxing, or in bed at night, when all of a sudden you jump out of your skin to a chaotic, aggressive frenzy of barking. Your immediate thoughts are that something awful has happened, but you quickly realize that your dog has just seen next door’s cat creeping past the kitchen window or someone walking by the front gate. Your startled dog has been alarmed by something and is trying to alert you by saying: “Intruder! Intruder! Everyone needs to wake up and pay attention because someone’s coming too close to the house. Mum, Dad, did you hear me? I said that there’s and intruder outside. Oh, wait it’s the cat from next door…..It’s the cat from next door, did anyone else see that? Everyone, there’s a cat outside the window!” Tip for improving your dog’s behavior: Calmly reassure your dog that everything is totally OK, and that there is nothing to feel threatened or alarmed at. Sometimes dogs who are new to a home bark like crazy every time someone or something comes near the front door, but slowly get used to the fact that there is no danger, and nothing to be worried about.

To Spain by Train by Jenny Whiteley Long distance train travel conjures up images of another age: uniformed porters behind suitcaseladen trollies, exquisitely dressed Victorian matrons, aristocratic youth on the Grand Tour, girls off to finishing school in Switzerland. In this “Murder on the Orient Express” era the leisured classes could afford to travel for its own sake rather than today’s requirement to dash from one side of the globe to the other in the blink of an eye. Since 2002, I have had visions of taking the train all the way from Farnborough to Fuente de Piedra but it has always been too expensive, until now. Since SNCF took over from Rail Europe online booking has become very much easier. I have registered with voyages sncf (http://uk.voyages-sncf.com/en/) and I get regular updates on prices and offers. Rather than book my trains all the way through to Santa Ana with voyage-sncf, I decided to book a return trip to Barcelona, for £207. This enabled me to break my journey and spend some time in Barcelona and Madrid. I booked all my Spanish train journeys on the Renfe website. The train is neither a cheap nor a quick option but it does have some advantages. Firstly, it affords an opportunity to visit other towns on the way. You can take two large suitcases and one piece of hand luggage at no extra cost. You are in fact merely limited by what you can carry. Liveried porters are not much in evidence these days and getting around the London Underground and Paris Metro with a lot of bags is no fun. You could always get a taxi – for a price. Metro tickets, by the way, are €1.70 for a single trip. At St Pancras security is much simpler than at the airport. After UK and French passport controls you find yourself in a busy departure lounge. My fellow travellers on a weekday evening in May were mostly commuters. Eurostar trains leave frequently. The train was half empty and the journey comfortable. On arrival in Paris I had to take the Metro from the Gare du Nord to the Gare d’Austerlitz, just a few stops along the line 5. The overnight train to Toulouse is made up of sleeping cars. Bunks are six to a compartment, three high on each side. The space between bunks is such that you cannot sit up, but at least the bedding is clean. There is no dedicated space for suitcases. The last person to settle into their bunk closes the door and plunges you all into darkness. Do you put in the ear plugs provided and sleep soundly but risk being robbed in the night, or do you try to keep awake and alert, listening to the heavy breathing of 5 strangers?

At 6.30 a.m. Toulouse station was already fully functioning and plenty of cafes are open for breakfast. It costs â‚Ź0.70 to use the toilets but this morning there were no showers, much to the chagrin of one French businessman, clearly anxious not to arrive at his meeting looking as if he had just stepped off the night train from Paris. The journey from Toulouse to Barcelona was on a Renfe train. The scenery was by far the best of the whole trip. Between Narbonne and Perpignan the route runs parallel to the coast, through an area of lagoons. At one point the train appears to be travelling on water. I arrived in Barcelona at 11.a.m., which gave me a whole to day explore the city. I stayed in a hotel at Barcelona Sants Station, so I could make an early departure the next morning. The 5 hour journey to Santa Ana began quietly enough. The carriage was almost empty and I was looking forward to a relaxed journey with my book!

Interesting Articles

On arrival in Zaragoza my pleasant reading was suddenly interrupted by a large group of elderly people surging onto the train. Diminutive women effortlessly heaved trolley bags into the overhead luggage racks, while at the far end of the carriage, an experiment in case stacking was not going well. Rather than arranging them on their sides like books they attempted to stack them one on top of the other, like plates. Despite the slanting exterior of one of the cases more were piled on top. Predictably, a while later, as the train careered round a bend at top speed, all the cases came flying off the rack.

To Spain by Train - cont’d When we arrived in Cordoba the train divided and there was a short stop of about 5 minutes. A gentleman with an English moustache gave the cue and the party of elderly people got off the train. They were obviously coming back because all their cases were still there. Five minutes went by and the departure board was declaring that “this train is ready to depart”. But where were all the passengers? The guard was standing by the open door chatting to a couple of ladies who were looking anxiously towards the top of the escalator. Another 5 minutes went by and our train had disappeared from the departure board. Finally, the passengers returned and the train moved off. “Bye-bye José, bye-bye Miguel,” called the man with the moustache, waving nonchalantly at the passing countryside. The two errant gentlemen finally made their way to their seats some time later, having boarded the train in another carriage. I cannot say much about the scenery as the train was going so fast it was painful to look out of the window. After two weeks in Fuente de Piedra I made the return journey, with a couple of days in Madrid and another night in Barcelona. The trip to London was all in the day time, leaving Barcelona at 08.25 and due to arrive back at St Pancras at 18.06. Everything went smoothly until we reached the outskirts of Lyon. A suicide at Lyon Part Dieu station delayed our train by an hour and a half. Up and down the carriage mobile phones were in action as passengers desperately tried to make alternative arrangements. After about an hour we moved very slowly to another station where the harassed staff herded us into a waiting area. Most people took seats and waited calmly, a group crowded round the information desk, while above the general hubbub a lone American shouted “Does anyone here speak English?” Although my ticketing was for Lille I thought I would head for Paris and hope my Lille-London ticket would be acceptable from Paris. So, when a space became available at the information desk I explained my situation. Ten minutes later I was on a direct train to Paris. There was no queue at the Eurostar ticket office in Paris. My ticket was changed and I was put on the next train to London which was departing in the next 10 minutes. I arrived back in London about 2 hours late and eventually got home about 11 p.m., having left Barcelona at 8.25 that morning. Taking the train to Spain is an adventure. If you have the time and the inclination it is worth giving it a try.

CANCER

Your intuition is strong at this point of time and will be giving you good guidance in what ever you do! You can even take risks easily and gamble for fun! Luck is in your favour but you must think twice before taking a leap. You may experience an air of emotions. Old friends and acquaintances may re emerge bringing positive vibes for you.

Your interests, curiosity, and desire to learn and make connections are growing these days, dear Cancer, the Sun spotlights these feelings. You can be drawn to news or information that benefits you, and some of you could be discovering new subjects or topics that excite you. New ways of communicating, connecting, and getting around can open up for you. You may be finding special meaning in the things you read or hear about . Your mind is more willing, open, and curious than ever, and you might gain new appreciation for things in your daily life that hadn't popped for you in the past.

TAURUS

LEO

Your optimism complicates your efforts to plot a new course of action because all the possibilities look so promising. Understandably, you may not want to jeopardize your sense of wellbeing if everything is already clicking, and thankfully, practicality will ultimately rule the roost. Opportunities for personal growth and self-expression abound; setting clear priorities and trusting your instincts enable you to maximize the current potential and make your dreams come true.

It may seem as if money is growing on trees but if you aren't careful , you might end up spending more than you should. The prosperous Sun-Jupiter conjunction illuminates your 2nd House of Persona Resources, enticing you to pay whatever the current price is to ride the fun train; unfortunately, you might underestimate the cost. Thankfully, your analytical skills are on point now as you navigate through a day of potential excess. Celebrate your good fortune but don't forget the bill will come due once the party is over.

GEMINI

VIRGO

The ability to organize, plan out, and edit is strong today, dear Gemini, and your focus on long-term benefits rather than short-term pleasure can help you prioritize and take care of business. You're also appreciated for "being there" for someone or for being responsible and reliable. It can be a good time for gaining clarity in your personal life, and for making clarifications as well. This is a strong day for research and finding the information you need, but do watch for digging too deeply when it comes to personal matters.

Recent overindulgence may have made you feel a bit under the weather this month, Virgo. Avoid coffee and other stimulants. Try to sleep in if you can. Too much stress in your life certainly isn't helping. This malaise could pass by the middle of the month, but if you've been doing this a lot lately, you need to ask yourself why and find a way to quit doing it.

LIBRA

CAPRICORN

You may be able to float through the month without doing much work because your friends and teammates have your back just when you need it. Naturally, your cheerful attitude doesn't hurt; in fact, your self-confidence acts as a powerful magnet that attracts the generosity of kindhearted people. There's no reason to question someone's motives today; don't look a gift horse in the mouth, especially when the planets are actively working on your behalf. Smile your best smile and say thank you more than once.

Your intuitive vision is crystal clear today, enabling you to see incredible potential for growth as you gaze out into the distance. The expansive Sun-Jupiter conjunction brightens your 9th House of Big Ideas, motivating you to focus your intentions toward the fulfillment of your long-term goals. Naturally, you won't automatically receive everything you want in the future. However, your fierce determination to manifest your dreams can attract an abundance of love and prosperity into your life. Don't waste a second of this special opportunity to learn and grow.

SCORPIO

AQUARIUS

Surrounding yourself with friends and allies is a wise strategy this month ; the more people involved in your life now, the merrier. Being an integral part of a group gives you a wonderful sense of belonging to a community of likeminded folks. The sweet news is that even a small amount of positive energy is amplified when you receive and reflect the love that's all around you. It's time to sparkle and shine; opening the door to your heart inspires others to do the same.

SAGITTARIUS Although you may be concentrating on your career trajectory, you aren't driven to put in any extra effort to reach your goals . Your unwavering confidence may lead you to believe the world owes you success because of your past accomplishments. Don't act entitled or you could inadvertently push away the very same people who show up to help you pursue your ambitions. Practicing a little humility ensures you will receive the respect and admiration that you deserve.

You will be affectionate and loving towards everyone you come in contact with! Some one may be moved by your generosity and will confess his or her feelings for you by the end of the Month . However bitter experiences are still on your mind, but this is the time to let go of all the negativity and grudges you have been holding onto for so long. you are likely to dig your heel in and refuse to listen to either common sense or good advice. This rigidity on your part will probably create some tension both at home and at work.

PISCES Despite the less-than-cheerful attitude of one of your more uptight friends, you are going to have an awful lot of fun with them .They are going through a bit of an emotional upheaval that is putting a sour puss on their face, but after a few minutes with you that frown will turn upside-down! Your sense of humour is likely to be the most effective tool toward lighting up a tiny spark in their eye, so encourage their laughter to keep on flowing. We are cosmically blessed by the annual conjunction of the radiant Sun and generous Jupiter. Square pegs, round holes. How are we supposed to make them fit? Conventional wisdom says we can't. Yet isn't the history of humanity a long litany of effort to attain that impossible goal? We can shave the sides of the pegs. Reshape the holes with putty or plaster. Eventually, we may even forget that there was ever a mismatch. Or, to put it all another way, there is something about your situation, this month, that is less than ideal. But if you can rise above your own displeasure, you can yet see that it is not ideal in an ideal way! In your love life: You have been obliged to give way. You may resent this, but it is part of the reason why everything soon starts to go the right way.

Things are coming to a head. Processes are nearing completion. Unfolding tales are approaching their grand finales. Hence the tension that you are so sensitive to this month, and hence too, the reason for feeling enthusiastic and optimistic. Now, it is often the case that when we stand on a threshold of positive change, we experience a degree of apprehension. ‘What if it all goes wrong?’ Ah, but what if it doesn’t? What if it all works out just as you need it to? What if your hopes prove justified? Your reassurance is coming soon. In your love life: In doubt about how much you are appreciated? Expect some reassuring signs and signals soon. You deserve them.

TAURUS

LEO

The only people who ever win arguments, are losers! Real winners know better than to waste their precious energy scoring petty points. They see that it is far more sensible to build on consensus than to beat down the doors of intellectual resistance with the battering ram of logical insistence. The planets offer you significant success this month, as long as you respect the following principle: Don’t focus on differences, disputes and disagreements. Look instead for points in common and reasons to cooperate. In your love life: You are going through a profound, reflective phase. You will emerge from this wiser, stronger, happier than ever.

The Sun may be leaving your sign but it remains the celestial ruler of Leo. And this month, it forms an auspicious conjunction with Jupiter on its way to producing a Full Moon in your eighth solar house. Now, that’s a promise of power. It is a suggestion of strength, an indication of incisiveness, an omen of imminent victory. You may be struggling with (or against) something now. You may have lately felt at a loss to see what on earth you can do to turn a situation round. But here comes an inspiring revelation. In your love life: What lies behind a silly situation? What must be done? For the answers, you just need your common sense.

GEMINI

VIRGO

Some things need to be said. Others are best left unsaid. But how do we decide which statements fall into which of the categories? And are there not sub-divisions too? Things, for example, that surely only ever need to be said once, then never referred to again. And things that can't be said often enough, emphatically enough. Much of this week's drama (and this month’s potential opportunity) revolves around your own ability to make such a distinction and apply it wisely. Ask yourself what you would like to be told! In your love life: Too closely involved in someone else’s drama? You may be best off watching from a distance. Use your energy wisely.

How are you getting along in this new era of ‘Jupiter in Virgo’? Is your life now full of pleasing serendipity and surprising synchronicity? Does it seem to you as if everything is meant to be and that a path is naturally unfolding before you that can only lead to success, as long as you keep walking along it with faith and commitment? Well, if you aren’t feeling this way quite yet, it may not be too much longer before you find that you can truly identify with such statements. This month, a subplot in your soap opera takes a happy turn. In your love life: The cosmos is determined to uplift you. A source of stress is sorting itself out. Soon, a problem will be a distant memory.

LIBRA

CAPRICORN

Imagine that you are slowly climbing a steep hill. You are keenly aware that this is no easy journey and, as you look into the distance, you can only see the challenging terrain rising up even higher ahead. You can be forgiven for feeling daunted and defeated but the summit is nearer than you think. This is no time to think about turning back or giving up. It may take you slightly longer than this month to reach the very top but you are fast heading to a point from which you can see clearly and start proceeding with ease and speed. In your love life: Is it ‘the new you’ versus ‘the old you’? Stick with the changes you have begun to implement; you will never look back.

Time is not as linear and sequential as we think. We think it goes in one direction only and we go with it. We can't revisit yesterday or just pop across to tomorrow. Or so we tell ourselves. Now, for me to argue otherwise is to risk being thought of as a fool or a maniac, spouting sacrilege. So I shall say no more — other than to predict that this month you will see compelling evidence to suggest that your future may have already colluded with your past. Why else do you now face both the perfect challenge and the ideal opportunity? In your love life: Your difficult balancing act is about to get a huge boost from the cosmos. The path to success will become clear.

SCORPIO

AQUARIUS

Happy-ever-afters’ are narrative devices — the storyteller's way of saying ‘that’s all for now folks.’ For as long as life goes on, the fairytale continues, challenges keep coming and conflicts keep arising. So if we want a true taste of eternal happiness, our only option is to find some way to greet those ongoing irritants with the kind of philosophical stoicism that borders on humble gratitude! It may not be perfect — but at least it's life! Make that your starting point this month, and you may yet have far more than that to be glad of. In your love life: Not everything adds up logically. Some things defy attempts to make sense of them. Be philosophical about that.

You can’t expect everyone to understand you. At times, we all send out messages that don't match the signals we imagine ourselves to be emanating. We can be surprised to discover that someone thinks one thing about us when we have tried so hard to create another impression. It may not even be our fault. Folk often see what they want to see, regardless of what else they are shown, or told. Events this month enable you to at least partially overcome a recent communication problem. Be sensitive and sympathetic. In your love life: I don’t normally suggest this, but just ask the cosmos for help. I confidently predict positive progress. Very soon.

SAGITTARIUS

PISCES What noise does the bluebird of happiness make? Does it chirrup? Does it tweet? Does it squawk like a parrot or coo like a dove? Or as some pessimists (who like to pretend that they are realists) insist, does it make no sound because it simply doesn’t exist? This month’s helpful conjunction of the Sun and Jupiter suggests that soon you will be more qualified to answer this question than any ornithologist. Even if you don't hear it, you will feel it. No matter what has lately sapped your spirits, they will soon be raised back up again. In your love life: Sometimes, with people, situations or attidudes, we have to let go. Is it time for something to move on now?

Calling All Areas

When we think we’ve got problems, we’ve got problems! The very fact that we think we have a problem, is a problem all in itself. Now if we think that we haven’t got any problems, it doesn’t automatically mean that we are problem-free. If we are in denial of a problem that needs to be dealt with, we may have a far bigger problem. Ah but, what if the only problem we’ve got is that we think we have a problem and we haven’t? This month brings relief, reassurance and the solutions to problems both real and nonexistent! In your love life: Can you honestly explore your hopes and fears with someone you can truly trust? If so, the cosmos will help you too.

Footie Tales

Cristiano Ronaldo Early Life Cristiano Ronaldo (full name Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro) was born February 5 1985 in Funchal, Madeira, a city of just over 250,000 people facing the Atlantic Ocean. A middle child in a family of four, Ronaldo grew up in modest circumstances in a family deeply committed to their Catholic faith. At 14 Ronaldo decided it was within football that he would pursue his life and love, and hereafter the story of a young man on his path to stardom. Ronaldo began as a youth player for Andorinha, then Nacional, before taking up a jersey with Sporting CP. Throughout this young life and career it was already apparent the tall yet skinny young Portuguese footballer had the potential to take to the world stage. Before too long he did.

Time in the English Premier League Signing with Manchester United in 2003 Ronaldo arrived aware of the pressure on him and the expectations surrounding his ascent. This saw him act accordingly. Taking up the banner of wearing the number 7 – the legendary jersey that has been worn by icons like Best, Cantona and Beckham before him – Ronaldo began his Premier League with confidence, knowing there could be no looking back or timidity. Ultimately, he was to prove himself as the first ever Portuguese player to wear a shirt for Manchester United. Ronaldo scored United’s first goal against Millwall in the 2004 FA Cup Final win. Not long after he scored his first international goal playing for Portugal in Euro 2004. Whilst it was ultimately not to be for Portugal that year – losing to Greece in the finals 1-0 – it nonetheless was a further affirmation of Ronaldo’s star power both in the domestic and wider international game. In the years to follow Cristiano became a certifiable superstar of the English Premier League. In 2007, he scored his 50th goal for United, but even then rumours began to abound that this young star may be looking across the English Channel for his next challenge.

Move to Spain In 2009, Ronaldo underwent a transfer to Real Madrid. At that time the most expensive player in the world, he was signed with a payment of £80 million for six years. Handed the number 9, Ronald left United’s number 7 behind; alongside the chance - having won the 2008 Ballon d’Or at Man U - to become one of the most storied players in English Premier League history. No less though, across the sea to the sunlit land of Spain came Ronaldo’s chance to showcase his talents in a new league. This he truly did. Whilst an ankle injury derailed a part of this 2009 season, he still came runner up in the 2009 FIFA World Player of the Year award (as well as the Ballon d’Or). Having spent 2010 breaking numerous goal-scoring records in fine form, 2011 saw Ronaldo score the winning goal against Barcelona FC in the Copa Del Rey final - and against a certain Barca player named Lionel Messi, whom by now he’d begun battling regularly for ‘player of the year’ awards - and achieve a high point in his Spanish career. 2012 was less stellar as a year, marked by injury and serving a one-game ban suspension. Since 2013 onwards Ronaldo began to be discussed as the very best player in the world. Having won the FIFA Ballon d'Or in both 2013 and 2014, Ronaldo was seen to have maintained an edge over now arch-rival Lionel Messi in the claim towards individual greatness in football. What’s more, whilst Real Madrid continued to partake in epic contests with Messi’s Barcelona, the blistering form of Ronaldo has given hope to Real Madrid fans that even with Barcelona acquiring superstars Luiz Suarez and Neymar to join their front line; there is still considerable firepower within the ranks of Madrid to hold their own in the Spanish league and beyond in the years ahead. Such is the fine form of Ronaldo at present. 34 - Inland Solutions Magazine - October/November Octubre/Noviembre 2015

International Career As an international player Ronaldo's career had been one of mixed success. However it is also true much of this is due to the team. By no means are Portugal a poor side‚ but perhaps when viewed alongside the games true powerhouses such as Brazil‚ Italy and Germany, they are best seen as a second order team like Paraguay and the United States that now and then shows dynamic brilliance that hints at what could be in the future. With this‚ a particularly challenging issue for the international team with this superstar is none other than: the presence of this very superstar! One of the consistent criticisms of the Portugal team and its strategy had been the 'all in on Ronaldo' attitude to play. Certainly it would take a brave (and very likely foolish) manager to leave Ronaldo off the pitch; but it is something increasingly worth exploring for Portugal going forward. At 30 Ronaldo is nowhere near done - indeed he is arguably right now at his very peak - yet it is true the transition and question of the 'next generation' begins to come to the fore. This means that less emphasis on Ronaldo and greater promotion and use of other players is surely the future. Indeed this is particularly pertinent as it relates not just to the team's future - but Ronaldo's. Great as he is now, to be a legend, a World Cup win is a necessity. In turn with the prospect of 2018 when he would be 33 – probably his last opportunity, ensuring he is part of the best squad to deliver him a great chance is crucial. Cristiano is undoubtedly one of the current pop culture talismans of the game. Indeed even beyond his fellow FIFA World Football Player of the Year recipient Lionel Messi, Ronaldo conjures a glamour and flamboyance not seen since David Beckham. And‚ what's more‚ he knows how to hone and own it just like Beckham did. Modelling for Armani‚ an ambassador for Herbalife alongside facial care products‚ exercise equipment - oh and oddly enough: football boots. Portugal reached the Euro Final in 2004. With Ronaldo Ascending to the captaincy in 2012, he lead the team to the semi-finals before losing out to Spain on penalties. If Ronaldo can retain the form he will be a star. If he can retain the form and dismiss the antics of his personal life from his overall personality; he will become a legend. By no means does this suggest he cannot continue to be a legend. But even when the South Americans battle it out over who is better between Pele and Maradona - it is a reality; one is a global ambassador of the game and the other (whilst beloved) a controversial national figure.

Footie Tales

Certainly the formula one rivalry of stern and stoic Austrian Nikki Lauda and Englishman playboy James Hunt - as famously depicted in the 2014 film Rush - is clear evidence there is a place for both types in the sporting world. But again‚ on paper Lauda has three world championships whereas Hunt has just the one. That is to say: if Ronaldo can get his image and personal life sorted the prospect of entering the pantheon of true icons of football is not beyond him. Cuentos

F i Francisco Sánchez Arjona.

Shiny Life is not easy for anyone; for some, it is even harder still. And everything gets a bit more complicated when we lose someone we love. Katherine knew this all too well; this is why she was not willing to let her dog die, her best friend. She did not think that he could be hit by another car; her own pain, the rain and cold, nor her fear of the night mattered... Young Kath only cared about one thing: she had to help Shiny. When that reckless driver (or perhaps just soulless) left without even pausing after running him over and dragging Katherine down by Shiny’s leash, she knew that her best friend’s life was in her hands, that it all depended on her. And there was no doubt: she would have done anything. But with Shiny, Katherine had many reasons to help, as many reasons as the smiles that had crossed her face thanks to her faithful dog, as many reasons as the afternoons they spent playing together in the garden, as many reasons as the tears that had been dried on his neck after each little failure ... she had as many reasons as the love for life that she had found in the company of her dog. Katherine made a superhuman effort and crawled toward the centre of the road, where Shiny lay injured. Ignoring her own pain, Kath, the girl who years earlier had only asked for one gift for her eighth birthday (the same as in the years before), managed to lift the lifeless body of her dog, put it on her shoulders and stand up though just barely, with the mastiff in tow. Katherine was small and petite, too fragile to lift an animal weighing over 80 kilograms. But she managed to stand up and take the first step; her bones creaked, her legs wobbled ... But she took another step ... and then another ... and another ... and so on to the shoulder of the road, where she collapsed to the ground with Shiny draped over her. No, Katherine was not strong enough to carry Shiny ... but she did not know that, or perhaps she simply did not care. She could only think of all the many beautiful moments she had shared with Shiny: running after him when evening fell, hugging him for comfort after every defeat, hugging him to celebrate each small victory, leaning on his back when her own strength was lacking, napping by his side listening to his heartbeat, looking in those eyes that sparkled when she smiled ... Shiny was in danger; she had to help. Yes, that was what saved Shiny from dying after he was hit by that car, because, had it not been for Kath, the next car that passed could not have been able to avoid hitting him.

There is no love that lasts forever. Or maybe, yes. Perhaps there is eternal love, like the love between Kath and Shiny. Francisco Sánchez Arjona.

Stories

Katherine managed to get Shiny off of the road and lay him down on the wet grass. The mastiff was breathing hard, and let out a muffled groan

as she leaned on his side. Kath stroked him, hugged him, told him, "Quiet, soon another car will pass by and pick us up.”She promised that he'd be fine, said how much she loved him, how much she needed him, that they would wait as long as it took (it did not matter), that she would never leave him alone, that together they would get through this. And Shiny looked at her with tired eyes, with a look of suffering that broke her heart. But in the silence of that evening that would soon grow completely dark, Kath knew he was saying, “Thank you for getting me out of that damn road, carrying me when I did not have the strength to walk, for saving my life, for these caresses, for hugging me so tightly ... "And Kath assured him that she was not afraid, that she was afraid of nothing when she was with him ; and she repeated "quiet, hold on a little longer, and soon a car will pass and stop to pick us up, you’ll see." But that was not a busy road, especially on winter nights. Kath looked at the clock. It had been almost two hours since the accident. It was dark, the rain intensified and Katherine hugged her dog a little tighter. “Quiet” she said again. "Hold on, a car will pass soon and pick us up." At that hour of the night, Kath did not know whether she was trying to calm Shiny or calm herself, if it was the dog that protected her or if she was protecting herself. But she did not care: they were together, and together we would get through it. The night wore on and not a single car could be heard, near or far. And that's when Katherine thought about the possibility of dying from the cold. And she heard an inner voice that said, “Go, you're not very far from home, surely you can get there." But Kath refused to listen to that voice, to accept the possibility of leaving without Shiny. She preferred to die hugging her dog, rather than live without him. It was early morning. The noise from an engine startled her. Minutes later, Kath was hugging Shiny in the back seat of a car. “Life is funny," she thought. A car had been about to end their lives; from that moment on their lives depended on another car passing ... and stopping.

The spice turmeric may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease, but what about treating the disease with the spice turmeric? An exciting case series was published in 2012: three Alzheimer’s patients were treated with turmeric, and their symptoms improved. In case number one, an 83-year-old woman started losing her memory and feeling disoriented. She started having problems taking care of herself, wandering aimlessly and became incontinent. After taking a teaspoon of turmeric per day however, her agitation, apathy, anxiety and irritability were relieved and

Researchers concluded that this was the first demonstration of turmeric as an effective and safe “drug” for the treatment of the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia in Alzheimer’s patients. They call it a drug, but it’s just a spice that you can walk into any grocery store and buy for a few pounds. Two trials using curcumin supplements rather than turmeric, however, failed to show a benefit. Curcumin is just one of hundreds of phytochemicals found in turmeric. Concentrated into pill form at up to 40 times the dose, no evidence of efficacy was found. Why didn’t they get the same dramatic results we saw in the three case reports? Well, those three cases may have been total flukes, but on the other

she had less accidents. Furthermore, she began to laugh again, sing again and knit again. After taking turmeric for more than a year, she came to recognize her family and now lives a peaceful life without a significant behavioural or psychological symptom of dementia. Case number two was similar, but with the additional symptoms of hallucinations, delusions and depression, which were relieved by turmeric. She began to recognize her family again and now lives in a peacefully serene manner. And the third case, similar as well, included an improvement in cognition.

hand, turmeric, the whole food, may be greater than the sum of its parts. There is a long list of compounds that have been isolated from turmeric, and it’s possible that each component plays a distinct role in making it useful against Alzheimer’s disease. Hence, researchers suggested that a mixture of compounds might better represent turmeric in its medicinal value than curcumin alone. But why concoct some artificial mixture when Mother Nature already did it for us with turmeric? Because you can’t patent the spice. And if you can’t patent it, how are you going to charge more than a few cents?

His father said, "I'll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, get your hair cut and we'll talk about the car." Well, the boy thought about that for a moment, and settle for the offer, and they agreed on it. After about six weeks they went in to the study, where his father said, "Son, I've been real proud. You've brought your grades up, and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, and participating a lot more in the Bible study groups. But, I'm real disappointed, since you haven't gotten your hair cut." The young man paused a moment, and then said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair and there's even a strong argument that Jesus had long hair also." To this his father replied, "Did you also notice they all walked everywhere they went?" Joke 2 After she woke up, a woman told her husband, “I just had a dream that you gave me the most beautiful diamond necklace. What do you think it means?” “You'll know tonight.” he said with a smile. The woman could hardly think of anything else all day and she couldn't wait for her husband to return home. That evening, the man finally came home with a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, she opened it excitedly to find a book entitled… “The Meaning of Dreams”
