Inland Solutions Magazine - February/March Febrero/Marzo 2016 -

Introduction

Hello Everyone, I hope that 2016 has already started well for you and if you have suffered with coughs, colds or chest infections I sympathise with you as Howie is still fighting against every bug the Winter brings including a 2 day stay in Hospital, thankfully the Spring feel good factor won´t be long coming. It´s been 3 years now since the 1st publication of the “Inland Solutions” magazine and unfortunately it hasn´t got any easier to produce. With the economy as it is, local businesses are still struggling to survive and buying down on the coast is still a favourite with many while overlooking the convenience, often cheaper & better service of local businesses. My original aim was to increase the circulation & distribution areas, introducing more local businesses around the Antequera area and continue growing the publication. But as more & more permanent residents have gone back to or are planning to go back to the UK for good, local businesses are feeling the effects, I am now having to re-think the future of the magazine. In the meantime, here´s something to take note of!!!! Many of you have been waiting patiently for the new Five Rivers Indian Restaurant in Fuente de Piedra to open and due to the high overheads that Paul the owner has had over the last two & a half years, has made it impossible to complete the massive project as soon as he would have liked. However he has now taken the bull by the horns and from mid February will be open as a take away and local delivery service only from his new address in Calle La Iglesia. This will ensure that the new Restaurant will be completed as soon as possible. Take Care

Inland Solutions Magazine - February/March Febrero/Marzo 2016 - 5

Horoscopes: February 2016 ARIES - 21st Mar - 19th Apr

CANCER - 21st Jun - 22nd Jul

Your intuition is strong at this point of time and will be giving you a good guidance in whatever you do! You can even take risks easily and gamble for fun! Luck is in your favour but you must think twice before taking a leap. You may experience an air of emotions. Old friends and acquaintances may re-emerge bringing positive vibes for you.

Your interests, curiosity, and desire to learn and make connections are growing these days, the Sun spotlights these feelings. You can be drawn to news or information that benefits you, and some of you could be discovering new subjects or topics that excite you. New ways of communicating, connecting, and getting around can open up for you. You may be finding special meaning in the things you read or hear about today. Your mind is more willing, open, and curious than ever, and you might gain new appreciation for things in your daily life that hadn't popped for you in the past.

TAURUS - 20th Apr - 20th May

LEO - 23rd Jul - 22nd Aug

Your optimism complicates your efforts to plot a new course of action because all the possibilities look so promising. Understandably, you may not want to jeopardize your sense of wellbeing if everything is already clicking, and thankfully, practicality will ultimately rule the roost. Opportunities for personal growth and self-expression abound; setting clear priorities and trusting your instincts enable you to maximize the current potential and make your dreams come true.

It may seem as if money is growing on trees but if you aren't careful this month, you might end up spending more than you should. The prosperous Sun-Jupiter conjunction illuminates your 2nd House of Personal Resources, enticing you to pay whatever the current price is to ride the fun train; unfortunately, you might underestimate the cost. Thankfully, your analytical skills are on point now as you navigate through days of potential excess. Celebrate your good fortune but don't forget the bill will come due once the party is over.

GEMINI - 21st May - 20th Jun

VIRGO - 23rd Aug - 22nd Sep

The ability to organize, plan out, and edit is strong, dear Gemini, and your focus on longterm benefits rather than short-term pleasure can help you prioritize and take care of business. You're also appreciated for "being there" for someone or for being responsible and reliable. It can be a good time for gaining clarity in your personal life, and for making clarifications as well. This is a strong month for research and finding the information you need, but do watch for digging too deeply when it comes to personal matters.

Recent overindulgence may make you feel a bit under the weather one morning, Virgo. Avoid coffee and other stimulants. Try to sleep in if you can. Too much stress in your life certainly isn't helping. This malaise could pass by noon, but if you've been doing this a lot lately, you need to ask yourself why and find a way to quit doing it.

6 - Inland Solutions Magazine - February/March Febrero/Marzo 2016

CAPRICORN - 22nd Dec - 19th Jan

You may be able to float through the month without doing much work because your friends and teammates have your back just when you need it. Naturally, your cheerful attitude doesn't hurt; in fact, your self-confidence acts as a powerful magnet that attracts the generosity of kindhearted people. There's no reason to question someone's motives; don't look a gift horse in the mouth, especially when the planets are actively working on your behalf. Smile your best smile and say thank you more than once.

Your intuitive vision is crystal clear, enabling you to see incredible potential for growth as you gaze out into the distance. The expansive Sun-Jupiter conjunction brightens your 9th House of Big Ideas, motivating you to focus your intentions toward the fulfilment of your long-term goals. Naturally, you won't automatically receive everything you want in the future. However, your fierce determination to manifest your dreams can attract an abundance of love and prosperity into your life. Don't waste a second of this special opportunity to learn and grow.

SCORPIO - 23rd Oct - 21st Nov

AQUARIUS - 20th Jan - 18th Feb

Surrounding yourself with friends and allies is a wise strategy; the more people involved in your life now, the merrier. Being an integral part of a group gives you a wonderful sense of belonging to a community of like-minded folks. The sweet news is that even a small amount of positive energy is amplified when you receive and reflect the love that's all around you. It's time to sparkle and shine; opening the door to your heart inspires others to do the same.

You will be affectionate and loving towards everyone you come in contact with! Someone may be moved by your generosity and will confess his or her feelings for you by the end of the month. However bitter experiences are still on your mind, but this is the time to let go of all the negativity and grudges you have been holding onto for a while. You are likely to dig your heel in and refuse to listen to either common sense or good advice. This rigidity on your part will probably create some tension both at home and at work.

SAGITTARIUS - 22nd Nov - 21st Dec

PISCES - 19th Feb - 20th Mar

Although you may be concentrating on your career trajectory, you aren't driven to put in any extra effort to reach your goals today. Your unwavering confidence may lead you to believe the world owes you success because of your past accomplishments. Don't act entitled or you could inadvertently push away the very same people who show up to help you pursue your ambitions. Practicing a little humility ensures you will receive the respect and admiration that you deserve.

Despite the less-than-cheerful attitude of one of your more uptight friends, you are going to have an awful lot of fun with them. They are going through a bit of an emotional upheaval that is putting a sour puss on their face, but after a few minutes with you that frown will turn upside-down! Your sense of humour is likely to be the most effective tool toward lighting up a tiny spark in their eye, so encourage their laughter to keep on flowing. We are cosmically blessed by the annual conjunction of the radiant Sun and generous Jupiter. Although this lucky alignment is not for everyone!

Horoscopes: March 2015 ARIES - 21st Mar - 19th Apr

CANCER - 21st Jun - 22nd Jul

While you may be busy with creative ideas or competitive sports, this month brings a potential shift in interests. As Jupiter hikes into Virgo you may find your energy level and overall vitality increasing. You may also be eager to look into time management as well as ways to streamline your habits and routines for best effect. The New Moon can be a good time to start a home-based business or ask a special person on a date.

You can prevent a problem before it even happens by taking strategic action right away. The Leo New Moon aligns with valuable Venus in your 2nd House of Money this month, emphasizing the importance of how you handle a financial matter. If you miss your window of opportunity, a manageable situation might grow out of hand and lead to more complications than solutions. Luckily, an unexpected windfall could sweeten your life and bring muchneeded relief if you don't fritter away your resources. Capitalize on your current abundance by saving for a rainy day.

TAURUS - 20th Apr - 20th May

LEO - 23rd Jul - 22nd Aug

The food you eat and the music you hear will feed you in very nourishing ways. In fact, you might be suddenly struck with the desire to host a dinner party or small, musical gettogether! When you and your friends hang out to eat, drink, and be merry together, warm feelings are always the result. A romantic connection is growing stronger, too. But is it really what you want? Avoid the trap of being with someone just so that you won't be alone.

You're in your element, particularly with Mars encouraging you to move outside your comfort zone. It's a good time to explore your creative potential, offer to organize key events, and fulfill your role as manager and motivator. You stand to gain financially as Jupiter moves into Virgo. It will be here for a number of months, so you have time to explore the many possibilities open to you. If you've had financial or cash-flow difficulties, these may begin to ease soon.

GEMINI - 21st May - 20th Jun

VIRGO - 23rd Aug - 22nd Sep

You may examine changes in your lifestyle which could possibly establish a balance between your work and health. You can drop an email to one of your close friends asking about the solution for the same. These changes will make you comfortable. You may align yourself with right people and they will let you determine the purpose of various goals.

You may be a little clearer about what actions to take based on recent revelations now. This is a time for making resolutions to put dysfunctional attitudes and attachments behind you, and it's a powerful one, particularly related to relationships and finances. You can be filled with strength, determination, and resolve. A conversation, thought process, or journal entry can help to release recent mental tension. People are drawn to your intensity right now, and you have a way of seeing what it is that is worth your time, and what is just not valuable to you.

8 - Inland Solutions Magazine - February/March Febrero/Marzo 2016

LIBRA - 23rd Sep - 22nd Oct

CAPRICORN - 22nd Dec - 19th Jan

Are you burning the candle at both ends? It seems like your to-do list is a million miles long but your energy stores are minimal, thanks to a Mercury-Mars opposition. You need a mental break—or at least, to ask for support. Is there anyone you can delegate tasks to, or something you could put off until tomorrow? Pause to prioritize. Chances are, you won't get all of those items accomplished this month, so pick the top three and put your attention on those. Then, reward yourself with a massage or an early night to bed.

You may feel a bit disjointed while there's so much hustle and bustle happening all around you. The good news is it looks like fun; however, you're hesitant to join in because you may be afraid of losing control. Don't worry so much about making everything work perfectly, since you are possibly the harshest judge around. Enjoy the cosmic ride; easing off on the reins slightly could prove to be a brilliant move on your part.

SCORPIO - 23rd Oct - 21st Nov

AQUARIUS - 20th Jan - 18th Feb

You're fully capable of putting on a big smile and dancing your way through the required show. Everyone loves you, even if you don't reveal your true feelings. Seeing through the thin social veneer is a mixed blessing if you don't want others to know what's really happening within your heart. You won't be easily fooled, yet you might not like what you learn. Keep your cool, since there is more to lose and nothing to gain now by upsetting the status quo.

SAGITTARIUS - 22nd Nov - 21st Dec You have so much to do with the Leo New Moon stimulating your 3rd House of Immediate Environment that you don't know where to begin. But there's no reason to make a fuss about your accomplishments at work, even if you're hoping others will stand up and take notice. Your co-workers could actually impede your progress by placing demands on your time if you draw unnecessary attention to yourself. Fortunately, you can outsmart reality and lie low for a bit so you can focus on moving forward with your plans instead of being distracted by everyone else's expectations.

There are so many overly cheerful people around you that they might grate on your nerves. Unfortunately, there isn't any place to hide. Someone may talk your ear off obsessively about a political cause that you're only interested in peripherally, giving you more information than you need to know. Instead of bluntly telling others to quieten down or go away, be as tactful as you can in handling the situation. Being diplomatic now prevents relationship headaches later on.

PISCES - 19th Feb - 20th Mar You will have a lot of luck. No effect on the material level. Your faith in yourself will be stronger, your convictions will be reinforced. You will live through a very good period, especially on the intellectual front. Your loving feelings are wide awake. You will be in good health and have lots of vitality. You will be objective, lively, competent, prudent and calculating. You will feel on top form, in good humour without really knowing why. You will be very ambitious during this period. You will not be able to stand any constraint. This will be a period when you will be interested in everything around you. In social life, you will meet people totally outside your usual circle of friends. A time when you probably won't be in love. A time when you will tend to be a little too credulous, trusting and naive. You will have problems concentrating on work.

Stories

Borders of Iron and Paper, Part Two Ibrahima looked at that border of steel wire. "You would just have to climb up a few metres,” he said hopefully, and quickened his pace as if his legs had suddenly become lighter, as if the blisters on his feet had miraculously stopped hurting, as if jumping that fence meant leaving Hell behind ... as if the life that he had dreamed of was waiting on the other side of that border, a life that they had been promised in exchange for their entire life savings. But this barrier (the steel wire one) was only the first and the easiest to cross ... although a large number of armed men waited for them on the other side, customs officers who were unwilling to let them pass. After that was another barrier. "There's another one ‘without papers,’ another illegal immigrant," someone said in reference to Ibrahima. The road had been long and arduous; crossing the steel wire barrier, an odyssey; but there was still another barrier, an insurmountable barrier for someone "without papers" such as Ibrahima; and, without them ("a paper barrier," he thought), the entire path that they had travelled up until then only led to one destination: deportation, going back home, failure, going back to square one ... But Ibrahima had not come all that way for nothing, he had made a promise to his family... and himself. There were only two options: to achieve his dream or die trying. "Some manage to escape, evade the patrols ..." he had heard someone say. "But others die in the attempt," a fellow traveller told him. Ibrahima was sure of one thing: he would not get deported; the dead did not get deported, it was cheaper to bury them in Europe. And he was willing to die rather than return. Ibrahima closed his eyes for a moment—just as John Lennon many years earlier imagined a world without borders, without reasons to kill or die, without having to flee from the motherland to survive, to have any chance—although there was only one choice—of finding an opportunity for their children, a chance to live free, without fear, a chance to live a decent life. Ibrahima opened his eyes and continued daydreaming, dreaming of a world where beliefs, races or religions could not be used as an excuse to belittle anyone, where no one could be considered different (lower) on the grounds of race or origin, a world where no one would use religion to promote hatred, where men and women would promote the things that unite them rather than be confronted by the things that set them apart. The time had come, but Ibrahima could not (or would not) lie to himself. He knew it would not be easy, that not everyone would be able to find opportunity in that land; but he also knew that they would not find a single opportunity where they came from (neither for him nor for them). So he gritted his teeth, tightened his fists and steeled his soul; so he started running without looking back, ignoring the shouts of the guards over the whistling of bullets, refusing to listen to the sound of his own fear. I just had to run, run, run ... and find that place, that house where some compatriots were hiding, other immigrants who had found an opportunity (poorly paid and working under conditions of inequality compared to their peers), an opportunity that had meant having "papers" being "legal" and, most importantly, bringing their families to the "promised land,” the land where they were not so ignorant as to be exploited for their labour, an unacceptable situation for others, that opportunity that they would not even have in their country. And when he thought that he no longer had the strength to keep running, Ibrahima remembered the story (perhaps only a legend) that told of a child of the sea, of a boy born on a boat, the same man who was able to succeed in this new land, a hero in his country (from Angola, they said he was), someone who put his money into building houses and schools, digging wells and water purification ... someone who saved the lives of many children otherwise condemned to an early death, someone who brought hope to those who remained, an inspiration for those who decided to risk crossing the sea for a chance at a better life. Ibrahima could not help but grit his teeth, tighten his fists and steel his soul, and ran without looking back, ignoring the shouts of the guards over the whistling of bullets, refusing to hear the sound of his own fear ... The End Francisco Sanchez Arjona

12 -- Inland Inland Solutions Solutions Magazine Magazine -- February/March February/March Febrero/Marzo Febrero/Marzo 2016 2016 12

Fronteras de acero y papel. 2ª parte.

Pepi’s Page

Q. When my son plays fetch with our dog, he pretends to throw the ball and then hides it behind his back. I think he’s teasing her, but he says they’re having fun. Is this bad? Should I make him stop, or is it OK to tease her sometimes? A. You’re right; your son is teasing the dog — and he needs to stop. Teasing isn’t harmless, and it isn’t fun for your dog. When a dog is teased, she may become frustrated, frantic and agitated — and the play interaction can go seriously and dangerously wrong. Your son doesn’t seem to be aware that he’s teasing the dog; most likely, he thinks that he’s making their game of fetch more interesting by hiding the ball from her. Teasing can come in a variety of forms: offering a treat or toy and then pulling it away, hiding it or placing it out of the dog’s reach; encouraging a dog contained by a fence, leash or tether to chase or grab something out of her reach; or physically pestering a dog by blowing air at her nose, grabbing at her muzzle or tail, or poking at her body. The Consequences of Teasing Teasing a dog can have some serious consequences. Teasing may cause a dog to be hyper, unmannerly and largely out of control. Consistent teasing may also damage the dog’s relationship with humans. She may learn to avoid or distrust anyone who regularly teases her. Teasing also increases the possibility of a bite. Teased dogs are often on edge; as their tolerance decreases and their frustration builds, otherwise-friendly and sociable dogs may resort to biting or other forms of aggression.

14 - Inland Solutions Magazine - February/March Febrero/Marzo 2016

It is also important to recognize that teasing actually teaches aggression. Attack and protection dogs are commonly trained to aggress using teasing scenarios known as agitation techniques. With these, a dog is presented with a situation — a person acting aggressively, for example — while being restrained. This increases reactive behavior and raises the likelihood that the dog will bite. For a trained protection dog working with a skilled professional trainer, the method may be useful, but when it comes to family dogs, such frustration building is dangerous. Unfortunately, unintentional teasing like your son is engaging in can also teach your dog to act more aggressively. As a dog trainer, I believe that teasing should be completely taboo and totally off limits. In your situation, the consequences of your son’s behaviour range from creating a dog who’s withdrawn and reluctant during interactions and play to a dog who’s overly wild and intense. More seriously, the chances that your son will get bitten increase the more he plays this particular game (or engages in other forms of teasing) with your dog. The bite may be inadvertent — a side effect of your dog’s desperate effort to get the ball or toy your son is holding — or it may be the end result of her ongoing frustration and decreasing tolerance of your son and his behaviour.

Visit Pepi's Refuge Adopt/Sponsor a dog page https://www.facebook.com/pepisrefugesponsorpage

Put a Stop to Teasing It is important for parents to establish clear ground rules for all interactions with a dog and to make sure they are followed all the time. The rules don’t need to be restrictive or overly complicated; the goal is to keep interactions between children and pets predictable and structured. My daughter, Reagan, who is 6, is allowed to play fetch with our two Pugs, but only when an adult is nearby to help and supervise, and only as long as she follows a few simple rules. When the Pug brings the ball or toy to her, she asks him to “drop it,” rather than pulling it from his teeth. After the Pug has relinquished the toy, Reagan knows to ask for a calm behavior like a down or sit. Once the dog responds appropriately, she can toss the toy for him to retrieve or give him a treat if their game is over. A simple set of rules like this will benefit both your son and your dog, and will increase the chance of a controlled and mutually fun game of fetch while eliminating any antics that tease or frustrate your dog. The Car Museum, Malaga On Sunday the 20th of September, Howie, myself and friends Dave & Trudy visited the Car Museum or in Spanish, El Automobile Museo in Malaga. It is situated near Malaga Port, is quite well signposted but parking is limited. The beautiful building housing the Museum and the grounds around it are very well kept and looked after. The entrance fee was reduced to â‚Ź5.50 each for adults on that day which we thought was well worth it after spending the following 2 hours in the museum. Although I am not a huge fan of cars I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience as everything was so well presented and information about every car was available. Not only was there the collection of vintage cars but displays of vintage costumes, gowns, accessories and hats that were being worn by the rich and famous at that time. It was very busy and we had to queue for a short time to get in so would advise an early start. It opens at 10am. There is no cafeteria there but there is a coffee / drinks machine just inside the reception and there were vans outside the entrance serving cold drinks, ice cream and various savouries. It was so near to the port that we headed off there to catch a bite to eat afterwards and browse the many artesana craft stalls displaying their goods. All in all we had a fabulous day out and would definitely recommend it and visit again.

How to Apologize Like an Adult No one enjoys being in a position of having to say “I’m sorry.” And sometimes, we will do whatever we can to avoid saying those words, even if we know it’s the right thing to do. Whether we don’t want to appear weak, have difficulty with confrontation, or simply do not like admitting we did something wrong, if we are adults we have to learn how to apologize to one another. Here are some things to consider before swallowing your pride and uttering the (seemingly) two most difficult words in the English language: 1. Actually say the words “I’m sorry” So often we may encounter people who have flubbed up and not taken responsibility for the mistake. There are certainly situations in which this is appropriate, but if you find yourself shrugging off a situation that caused an inconvenience or even hurt to another person, this simply is not good enough. Stepping up and saying “I’m sorry” may bruise our egos, but it means we are being compassionate beings who are aware of our impact on others. 2. Empathize with the other person It’s a simple practice in theory, yet actually putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes can be uncomfortable. How did the comment you thought was a joke affect the person who reacted negatively to it? What was the person affected by a forgetful mistake feeling? What was it like for your friend or partner to be on the receiving end of you lashing out after a bad day? Practicing empathy now can prevent future apologies. 3. Learn the apology languages Not sure how to make things right? Depending on the situation, expressing regret for your actions, accepting responsibility, making restitution—otherwise known as righting the wrong, expressing a desire to change future behavior and asking for forgiveness are all acceptable responses. Reflect on which language is most difficult for you and start practicing the art of saying sorry. 4. Don’t undo your apology with passive aggression “I’m sorry, but…” is not a way to begin an apology because what usually follows is a repetition of the original offense. In the same vein, saying “I’m sorry you’re offended” is not a good way to go, either. This only serves to accuse the other person of having feelings. Digging our heels in when we have genuinely done or said something hurtful to someone else is not what healthy communicators do. Tap into that empathy again and choose the most compassionate response. 5. Don’t apologize when it’s not necessary There are some of us who may not have a problem apologizing, but instead do it too often! Specifically, a lot of women find themselves in this position and say “I’m sorry” for things that do not warrant an apology. If you find yourself apologizing for inserting your (respectful) opinion into a conversation, for being bumped into, or for asking for help—stop! Instead of asking “I’m sorry, can I say something about this topic?”, build confidence in just saying what you need to say. With these basic considerations, we can all be well on our way to being expert apologizers and truly empathic communicators.

5 Things Your Knees Say About Your Health Your knees: you need ‘em to get around—and when they hurt, boy do they interfere with your daily life. Many of the most common causes of knee pain are pretty obvious—injury, arthritis, overuse…you get the picture. But there are plenty of LESS obvious reasons your knees hurt. Read on for some of them. 1. You’re Overweight. Your knees can feel the pressure of up to five times your body weight, so it’s no surprise that obesity can wreak havoc on these crucial joints. Luckily, even people with difficulty losing weight can take care of their knees by doing muscle strengthening exercises. 2. You’re Exercising Too Much or Too Hard. We all know that exercise is good, but, when you push yourself too hard, for too long or too frequently, it can cause major strain on your joints. In fact one study found that people who worked out the most were more likely to experience ultrapainful knee cartilage degeneration than people who worked out less often. Make sure to incorporate a good stretching routine into your workout to avoid knee injury. And, yep, if you have knee pain—skip the hard workouts! 3. You’re Getting Older. Knee pain, as you’ve likely noticed if you’ve reached a certain age, is often found in older people. The longer you live, the more stress you put on your body, and, of course, that includes your knees. Your muscle mass also decreases with age, leading to loss of body strength and, hence, more knee pain. It’s not an inevitable problem that everyone has, however—maintaining a healthy lifestyle can squash that pain even as you reach an advanced age. 4. You Have Gout. Gout is a form of arthritis often found in people that eat a lot of red meat. If you’re experiencing unexplained knee pain, you may want to take a look at your diet and talk to your doctor about your symptoms. Interesting Articles

5. You Have Digestive Tract Issues. Though most commonly known as digestive tract issues, both UC and Chron’s can also cause knee and other joint pain. In fact, it’s the most common symptom of these diseases outside of the digestive tract. Luckily, this joint pain is not as severe as other types of unrelated arthritis and tends to go away after digestive tract treatment.

Smiles The doctor that had been seeing an 80-year-old woman for most of her life finally retired. At her next checkup, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all the medicines that had been prescribed for her. As the young doctor was looking through these, his eyes grew wide as he realized Grandma had a prescription for birth control pills.. "Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are BIRTH CONTROL pills? "Yes, they help me sleep at night." "Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely NOTHING in these that that could possibly help you sleep!" She reached out and patted the young doctor's knee... "Yes, dear, I know that. But every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16-year-old granddaughter drinks... And believe me; it definitely helps me sleep at night."

A man was riding a bus, minding his own business, when the gorgeous woman next to him started to breast-feed her baby. The baby wouldn't take it, so she said, "Come on sweetie, eat it all up or I'll have to give it to this nice man next to us." Five minutes later, the baby was still not feeding, so she said, "Come on, honey, take it or I'll give it to this nice man here." A few minutes later, the anxious man blurted out, "Come on kid. Make up your mind! I was supposed to get off four stops ago!

This is straight from Scotland. Students in an advanced Biology class were taking their mid-term exam. The last question was, 'Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk. The question was worth 70 points or none at all. One student, in particular, was hard put to think of seven advantages. However, he wrote: 1) It is perfect formula for the child. 2) It provides immunity against several diseases. 3) It is always the right temperature. 4) It is inexpensive. 5) It bonds the child to mother, and vice versa. 6) It is always available as needed. And then the student was stuck. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indicating the end of the test, he wrote: 7) It comes in two attractive containers and it's high enough off the ground where the cat can't get it. 26 - Inland Solutions Magazine - February/March Febrero/Marzo 2016

A RIDE IN THE TAXI A woman and her twelve-year-old son were riding in a taxi in Detroit. It was raining and all the prostitutes were standing under awnings. "Mom," said the boy, "what are all those women doing?" "They're waiting for their husbands to get off work," she replied. The taxi driver turns around and says, "Geez lady, why don't you tell him the truth? They're hookers, boy! They have sex with men for money." The little boy's eyes get wide and he says, "Is that true Mom?" His mother, glaring hard at the driver, answers in the affirmative. After a few minutes, the kid asks, "Mom, if those women have babies, what happens to them?" "They become taxi drivers," she said.

Tech Corner - with Inland Computer Services Kodi Free software for playing videos, music, pictures, games, and more. Since the loss of the Astra 2 satellite signal a few years back, android tv boxes have become a popular method for watching live and catchup tv and films, in our part of the world. These multimedia boxes are available from many local dealers and at a reasonable price through online sources such as eBay and Amazon. What isn’t widely known though, is that these tv boxes are simply mini-computers, running the android operating system (in the same way as many modern smart phones), with a third-party application installed called Kodi, which brings the tv magic. Once the Kodi base is installed (found for free on the Google Play Store), a variety of Kodi add-ons can be applied, in order to gain access to a wide range of media, such as music, films, tv shows etc. In this article, I’ll aim to give a few tips for some of the most common mistakes made with android/kodi boxes, a focus on my favourite Kodi add-on and how you can run the Kodi software on your phone, tablet or computer for FREE. Before going any further, obviously I should say that accessing some of the film and tv content via Kodi could be considered a violation of copyright laws and therefore, I recommend that you stay on the right side of the law and I cannot be held responsible for any of the tips/advice given below. Ok, got it ? Then on we go ...

Common Mistakes & Misconceptions Many of the android tv boxes, are sold with Kodi pre-loaded and lots of add-ons already in place. What you’re actually getting is a small handful of useful channels/addons to use and a very large amount of unnecessary junk which you’re never going to watch. It’s important to remember that in exactly the same way as a computer, if the memory/ storage becomes full up, the performance of the tv box will degrade, therefore, you should ensure that you disable and/or uninstall any add-ons which you don’t use or need - are you really going to watch that Lithuanian Tractor Pulling channel ???? To view and disable or uninstall your add-ons, go to the “System” main menu, then choose “Settings” - “Add-ons” - “My Add-ons” - “All”, then you can access each individual add-on and choose to disable or uninstall. Users often blame the box for any problems they encounter, however, along with the “junking-up” of the box mentioned above, the “consistent” speed of your internet connection is also vital to enjoying the smooth running of a tv show or film. Generally, a “consistent” internet speed of 3Mbp/s or above should give reasonable results, however, 28 - Inland Solutions Magazine - February/March Febrero/Marzo 2016

it’s important to remember a few things about internet speed 1) If multiple users in the same household are hammering the internet connection at the same time, the shared speed reduces for each user and the experience reduces overall. 2) If a big event is happening, such as a big sports tournament, lots of people could be streaming the event at the same time and overall internet speed will be reduced. 3) The sources of the add-ons are re-broadcasting to you for free and as such, there might be occasions where their servers get overloaded. In other words, don’t grumble if the SkySports illegal feed you’re watching through Kodi is buffering or breaking up, because you’re not paying for it and therefore, your expectations should match that.

How to get Kodi for free on your phone, tablet or computer The Kodi software is available for a wide range of operating systems, on phone, tablet, apple devices and windows computers FOR FREE. No subscription to pay to anyone, it’s completely FREE. Visit http://kodi.tv/download/ then click on the installer link for the operating system that you’re using.

What do I need next ? Set up the TVAddons Fusion Installer, by following the instructions found on the following webpage - https://www.tvaddons.ag/fusion-installer-kodi/ Once the Fusion Installer is in place, you will have access to the Addon Installer Tool, which will give you access to a large number of add-ons. Follow the instructions for using the Installer Tool, via the following webpage https://www.tvaddons.ag/addon-installer-kodi/

How do I watch TV shows and films ? There are lots of add-ons available for accessing TV shows and films, but my favourite is the Genesis add-on, because it’s extremely easy to search and use. Using the above-mentioned add-on installer tool, go to Video add-ons and find Genesis, then simply add it to Kodi. After adding Genesis, you will find it on the main menus within “Videos” - “Add-ons” and “Video Add-Ons”. Within Genesis, you can search for films or tv shows by name, by actor or by year. Once you decide upon the item you wish to watch, click on it, then choose a source (best to work from the top down, not all will work first time), then sit back and enjoy. Secret Tip - An older version of Genesis (v 4.8.5), included a download option (no longer available in more recent versions), which would allow you to save the programme or film to storage for watching at a later point in time, without any buffering. If you require more information about Kodi, or you would like a tidy-up of your tv box, then please call in to see us at our shop in Mollina. Contact details can be found on our ad on page 17 of this edition of the magazine.

Red lentil and chicken curry Ingrediants (serves 6)  Olive oil for frying  2 large red onions, finely chopped  6 garlic cloves, finely chopped  400g red lentils  1.5 litres vegetable stock  6 skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-size pieces  2-3 tbsp madras curry paste (or use a milder one)  300g baby leaf spinach  Thick natural yogurt to serve (optional)

Method Heat a little olive oil in a very large pan, add the onions and garlic, then fry for 4-5 minutes until softened. Add the lentils and a little of the stock and simmer. Keep adding small amounts of stock, bit by bit, as the lentils cook and soften, as if you were cooking a risotto. Once the lentils start to break down, add the chicken and curry paste and stir well. Keep simmering and adding stock for 20-25 minutes until the chicken is cooked and you’ve added all the stock.

Time Out In Fuente De Piedra The chances are that you, along with countless others, will have heard of Fuente de Piedra and this will probably be because of the lagoon with its fabulous colony of flamingos. There is however more to Fuente de Piedra than the lagoon and the stunning wildlife that inhabits it and if you can find the time to stop off, you will not be disappointed. Located just off of the A92 motorway in the province of Malaga, Fuente de Piedra is typical of many villages in this part of Andalucia. With a population of about 2,500, the village is smaller than some of its neighbours, but, in common with many other villages and towns in the area, employment centres on the cultivation of olives and the production of olive oil and other forms of agriculture, although it is beginning to diversify nowadays with the growth of tourism and other industries. Despite its relatively small size the village has a bustling feel to it and the main square, the Plaza de la Constitucion, is definitely the main focus of attention. The Plaza has been revamped and on a warm day is a very pleasant place to sit at one of the many bars and enjoy a drink and a tapa. Fuente de Piedra does lack some of the more ornate and grand architecture that can be found in some of the larger towns, but 19th century palace of the Marques of Fuente de Piedra is a splendid building and there are other examples of older, fine buildings around the village.

century, houses began to be built around the spring and formed the beginning of the village that is there today. People suffering with kidney complaints came to use the healing waters of the spring, but at some stage, possibly following the outbreaks of some terrible epidemics at the beginning of the 19th century, that decimated the population, it was felt that the waters of the spring had lost their healing powers and it gradually fell into disuse, until in 1959 it was capped and buried under some gardens. In 1990 work began to excavate and restore the Fuente de Piedra to its original condition. This work was completed in 1994 and the Fuente can now be seen as a centrepiece in the Plaza de la Constitucion.

Along with the lagoon, the main feature of the village is the Stone Spring. The Stone Spring, is responsible for the origins of the village that exists today and is what give the village its name of Fuente de Piedra. Exactly when the spring first began to be used for the medicinal qualities of its waters is not clear, but there is certainly evidence to show that it was valued and used extensively by the Romans, who believed that its waters were effective in treating kidney stones and other ailments. So valued was the spring that the Romans named it 'Fons Divinus', Divine Spring. By the mid-16th 32 - Inland Solutions Magazine - February/March Febrero/Marzo 2016

The other main reason for the growth of the village and probably the reason why most people visit the area today is the fabulous Laguna de Fuente de Piedra. At 6.8k by 2.5k this lagoon is the largest in Andalucia and is the most important temporary lagoon in Europe for the greater flamingo. The lagoon is saline and there is a belief that salt has been extracted from it since prehistoric times. Evidence has certainly been found to demonstrate that during the Roman occupation the lagoon was exploited for its salt deposits and that the Romans also hunted the resident flamingos, mainly for their tongues which were considered a delicacy. The extraction of salt continued on and off until 1951 when it was finally abandoned. In 1981 the area was acquired by ICONA, (The Institute for the Conservation of Nature) and in 1990 it was declared a Nature Reserve by the Regional Government of Andalucia. Between February and July the lagoon can

have up to 30,000 flamingos and in a good, wet year, there have been up to 50,000 of them and up to 15,000 chicks. I will always remember my first view of these beautiful and graceful birds from the elevated position of the visitors centre and it is something I never tire of returning to see. If you have not visited the lagoon yet I urge you to take the opportunity and if you are able to go, in August, when a huge group of hardy volunteers are ringing and measuring the chicks so much the better. The lagoon is temporary and is dependent upon underground springs to fill it. Although it will fill well in the autumn when there is sufficient rainfall, in dry years, such as we have had recently, it will almost dry right out during the summer months. This does have an effect upon the flamingos who require a certain amount of water to be able to breed and will move elsewhere if this is not available. It is difficult to believe, when the lagoon is full, that this huge 13k expanse of water is less than one metre deep at its deepest point.

As well as the world famous flamingos, the lagoon and smaller lakes are home to a huge amount of other aquatic birds and up to 170 species have been recorded there. It would be foolish to try to name all of these birds here, but the visitors centre and some of the hides have all of the information you could wish for about the resident and visiting birds. As well as the waders, ducks and the like there are also a range of raptors such as marsh harriers, buzzards, kestrels and black kites and, if you are lucky to be there at the right time you may be lucky enough to see and hear anything up to 1,500 migratory cranes at the lagoon or on the surrounding farmland. We have seen them on a couple of occasions and they are nothing short of stunning. As well as the huge variety of birds, the lagoon and the surrounding area is home to an impressive range of reptiles, including many varieties of lizards, snakes and amphibians. The surrounding fields and farmland contain many hares, rabbits, foxes and other small animals and we have been lucky enough to see a family of Egyptian mongooses on several occasions. The reserve is very well laid out and maintained and is, on the whole, disability friendly.

There are a number of trails and hides around the lagoon that will give you the opportunity to see the wildlife in different locations. The visitors centre has an excellent range of information, in various formats, about the reserve and its inhabitants. It is possible to hire equipment such as binoculars, cycles and it is also possible to hire the services of a guide who will have more specialist knowledge of the reserve. The one thing that we have always said that the centre lacks is a small cafe. There is a drinks machine, but a cup of fresh, hot coffee on a cold winter morning would be great. No piece about Fuente de Piedra would be complete without mentioning the Donkey Sanctuary, or Refugio del Burrito. Whenever our grandchildren come to stay a visit to the sanctuary is high on their 'places to visit' list and provides the perfect excuse for Mo and I to pay another visit to a place we never tire of going to. The Donkey Sanctuary always triggers a range of emotions whenever I visit. On the one hand when I read the stories of the way these animals have been abused or neglected I am reminded just how cruel and heartless some people can be, but on the other hand, when I see the donkeys and mules looking happy and receiving care, I am reminded that there are also many good people

who run and support places like this. One of the great things about the Refuge is that you are able to get up close to the animals and they seem to like a good 'ruggle' which is great for our grandkids who just love to stroke them. The Sanctuary also has a programme of assisted riding, providing therapy for children with special needs and a growing number of children are benefiting from this. You are also able to adopt one of the donkeys and our grandchildren have adopted two of them and receive regular information back in the UK on how they are progressing. The Sanctuary is a tranquil and inspiring place and if you have not yet visited I can really recommend that you do. This has been an all too brief glimpse of the village of Fuente de Piedra and it would take a much longer article to really do it justice. I do hope that some of those reading this who have not yet visited will now be tempted to give it a try as, for a relatively small place, it has a lot to offer, so maybe we'll see you there.

Footie Tales

Gary Lineker Gary Lineker is a retired football player who is now a sports broadcaster at the BBC. That statement might be straight out of the cliché book, but Lineker is one of the few who executed it to perfection. A gentle beast in the true sense, Lineker was lethal on the pitch and yet was never booked in his professional career. Not many players in history have pulled that off, but Lineker somehow managed to do it while playing as a striker for the good ol’ English boys. Gary Lineker started his career with Leicester City where he scored 95 goals in 195 appearances, he then scored 30 goals in 41 appearances for Everton before moving to Barcelona and eventually Tottenham Hotspurs scoring 42 and 67 goals for them respectively. Lineker made 80 appearances for England scoring 48 goals and is the only English player ever to receive the prestigious Golden Boot. The success he endured during his footballing career is obvious from the fact that just mentioning the stats of his career seems like heaping praise on the deadly striker.

Gary Lineker started his football career after leaving school with four O levels. He came out of the Leicester Club Academy in the early 80’s. Ironically, one of Lineker’s teachers wrote on his report card that he was too involved in football and he’ll never make a career out of it. Lineker keeps on proving that teacher wrong every day! Lineker helped Leicester City arrive in the top division of English football twice during his time there. His scoring stats attracted the attention of bigger clubs and he moved to Everton FC for £800,000 in 1985. He was the division’s top scorer and helped Everton finish second in the league, runner-ups to arch rivals Liverpool. Everton were also defeated in the final of the FA Cup that season in a Merseyside Derby where Lineker scored Everton’s only goal. Lineker described his time at Everton as successful and rewarding. After receiving the Golden Boot in the 1986 FIFA World Cup, Lineker moved to Barcelona FC for a fee reported to be around £3 million. Unlike many English strikers before and after him, he did not disappoint during his time in the Spanish Division scoring 21 goals in 41 games in his first season at the Catalan giants. One of the most memorable moments during his time at Barcelona, was the hat-trick he pulled off against Real Madrid in a 3-2 victory. He won the European Cup and Copa Del Rey with Barca. Barca manager John Cruyff then used to play him at the right of midfield, a position that did not suit the charismatic English man and he eventually lost his place in the first team. In July 1989, Lineker moved to Spurs brushing off interest from the Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson who also bought Lineker’s former playing partner Mark Hughes. Lineker did not lose his form and finished as the top goal scorer during the 89-90

season as Spurs finished third. He was the division’s second highest scorer in the 91-92 season finishing behind Ian Wright. Lineker ended his illustrious career with an injury plagued season in Japan with Nagoya Grampus Eight.

mous quotes. He said “Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win.” Gary Lineker eventually retired from football after eighty caps and forty goals, one less than Sir Bobby Charlton. Sir Bobby Charlton had accomplished this task in 106 caps as opposed to Lineker’s 80. After retiring from professional football, Lineker has enjoyed a successful career in the media. He kicked off his media career with BBC radio and later replaced Des Lynam as an anchorman at BBC. He also appeared in the 1991 play named “An Evening with Gary Lineker”. Lineker started working with NBC sports in 2013 and was unveiled as BT Sport’s lead anchor for UEFA Champions League in 2015. Gary Lineker also led a consortium that invested in Leicester City and saved it from bankruptcy. As a result of his services, he was appointed Honorary Vice President of the club.

Gary Lineker had an excellent career, scoring five times in the 1986 World Cup in which he won the Golden Boot. Lineker started his international senior career against Scotland in 1984. Lineker was the second English player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup. He helped England reach the final of the 1986 World Cup but eventually lost to Argentina then captained by the one and only Diego Maradona. Lineker scored four goals for England in the 1990 FIFA World Cup although he was sick during the tournament. England was eventually eliminated by Germany in the semi-final. After the semi-final, Lineker gave one of his most fa-

Gary Lineker was a pacey forward with clinical finishing prowess. As lethal as he was, Lineker was never booked in any professional game during his career which is an even bigger task to achieve when a player switches countries from England to Spain. As a result, he was presented with the FIFA Fair Play Award in 1990 and was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame. Lineker was part of the England team that came the closest to giving the English the greatest prize in football, the World Cup. Lineker enjoyed a lengthy and a clean career and to this day is one of the best English players to have ever kicked the ball.

7 Unexpected Benefits of Unplugging from Technology It’s become the norm to be forever plugged into the internet, TV, text messaging, social media, Netflix, video games and all sorts of other electronic indulgences these days. Unfortunately, living responsibly in a digital world isn’t easy. The convenience of technology has led many to adopt bad habits that can be difficult to break, depending on how extreme they are and how long they’ve held them. Unplugging is often a struggle at first, but the benefits are worth it if you can get past the uncomfortable stage in the beginning. Besides the main benefit of being able to enjoy much more free time, here are seven other wonderful and lesser-known perks you’ll notice from making the decision to unplug regularly. 1. Energy bill savings. It may not be much, but the average desktop computer that’s left plugged in all day and every day for an entire year will cost you about €40 a year. According to the Department of Energy, electronic machines and devices left on standby account for about 5 to 10 percent of your energy bill. 2. Increased awareness of your surroundings. When you unplug, what you’re really doing is banishing a major distraction. You may begin to notice small details in people, things and places that you never really noticed before, possibly because your brain had previously gotten used to being overloaded with stimulation from technology. 3. Reduced body pain. Ever heard of “text neck” or “tech neck”? That’s the new lingo people are using to describe the strain you put on your neck and spine from glaring down at your smartphone or computer monitor for so long. With no screens to look at from unplugging, you’ll be able to enjoy better posture, less aches and tightness in all your muscles and zero digital strain on your eyes. 4. Better quality of sleep. Speaking of giving your eyes a break, you should be able to fall asleep quicker and stay asleep for most of the night. The human circadian rhythm depends on darkness to prepare for sleep, which can be disrupted by light-emitting devices. You’ll be doing your body a huge favor by unplugging completely at least an hour before bed. 5. Improved memory retention and mood. Even just unplugging for a day once a week is enough to give your brain a reboot, which can improve your memory and lift your mood. With less time spent being a slave to technological stimulation, you’ll have more time to focus on doing activities that can grow your brain cells—such as indulging in an enjoyable hobby, visiting a new place, having new experiences or going for a relaxing walk.

6. Enhanced productivity. You’d think that you need constant access to your social notifications, your email inbox, a bunch of tabs open in your web browser and all sorts of other things to be more productive. But it’s really the accumulation of interruptions of those things stealing away your ability to get things done. Any time you’re interrupted from a work-related task by something from your phone or computer, it can take as long as 45 minutes for the brain to refocus.

When something interesting starts happening, what’s your first reaction? Do you pull out your phone and start snapping photos or begin texting your friends about it? When you unplug, you’re essentially forcing yourself to be more present. A natural side effect of unplugging is that you stop missing out on what you should be enjoying for yourself, rather than trying to tell everyone on social media about it.

7. Satisfaction in simply enjoying being in the moment.

How to Keep Your Local Feral Cats Safe This Winter Feral cats call the outdoors their home, all year round and in all weather conditions. While they are skilled at surviving harsh weather, and finding their own food and shelter, they can always use a helping hand during the winter months. As temperatures drop, there are plenty of simple ways you can help the cats in your community stay even warmer and safer this winter.

Give Me Shelter One great way to help them through the winter is to provide an outdoor shelter. Specially-built shelters guarantee feral cats a warm spot to escape harsh winter storms.

Any shelter for feral cats should follow these guidelines:     

Elevate the shelter off the ground for warmth, and place it in a quiet area with minimal foot traffic. Aim for a shelter sized about two feet by three feet and 18 inches high, providing just enough space for three to five cats to huddle. If you’re sheltering smaller numbers of cats, make the shelter smaller, the smaller the shelter, the quicker it can be heated up with body heat. The door should be between six and eight inches wide. Consider installing a flap on the door to keep out snow, rain, and wind. Insulate the shelter with straw, but not blankets or other materials like hay that absorb moisture.

“Remember to check under the car before starting it, as cats will sometimes crawl into the engine or hide underneath it for warmth.

Feeding Tips As the weather turns colder, feral cats will also need extra calories to maintain energy levels. Providing extra food and water, and keeping them from freezing, is an important step in helping outdoor cats this winter. Wet food in insulated containers is best, as it takes less energy for cats to digest than dry food. To keep water drinkable, use bowls that are deep rather than wide, and refill them with hot or warm water. Place the bowls in a sunny spot and add a pinch of sugar to keep the water from freezing as quickly.

Safety Tips Take some extra steps in your everyday life to keep outdoor cats safe in your neighborhood. Remember to check under the car before starting it, as cats will sometimes crawl into the engine or hide underneath it for warmth. Winter is also the time of year for antifreeze, which often tastes irresistible to cats and other animals, but is toxic and deadly. Keep it out of reach, and clean up any spills.
