Introduction
Wow!! What a Sizzling Summer we´re having and it looks like it´s staying for the long term. I wonder if this means we will have a longer, colder Winter!! I hope not. The weather conditions here seem to be getting more & more extreme and for those with health issues it can be a real problem. However, looking on the bright side it could be worse especially looking at the weather & global conditions in other parts of the world.
¡¡ Wow !!
Looking forward to the next couple of months, there are lots of local Ferias and events going on in different Villages around the Antequera area and check out the results of the Fuente de Piedra Dog Show on pages 28 & 29 which was great fun.

How to Prevent Childhood Obesity Thirty years ago, virtually all diabetes in young individuals was thought to be autoimmune Type 1 diabetes, but since the mid-90s we started to see an increase in Type 2 diabetes among youth, particularly in the United States. Indeed, the term "adult onset diabetes" has now been scrapped and replaced with ‘Type 2’ because children as young as eight are now developing the disease and the effects can be just as devastating. A 15 year follow-up of children diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes found an alarming rate in young adults of blindness, amputation, kidney failure and death in young adulthood. Why the dramatic rise in childhood diabetes? The dramatic rise in childhood diabetes is due to the dramatic rise in childhood obesity. During the past 30 years, the number of children diagnosed as being overweight has increased by more than 100 percent. Once an obese child reaches age six, it’s likely they’ll stay that way. And even if they don’t, being overweight in our youth predicts adult disease and death regardless of adult body weight. Being an overweight teen may predict disease risk 55 years later, including twice the risk of dying from heart attack, more cancer, gout and arthritis. In fact being overweight as a teen “was a more powerful predictor of these risks then being overweight in adulthood.” This underscores the importance of focusing on preventing childhood obesity. How do we do it? From official guidelines, the problem appears to be kids eating too much fat and added sugar, and not eating enough fruit and vegetables. Doctors, at every occasion, beginning soon after a child’s birth, should endeavour to give sound advice regarding nutrition and growth so that obesity and its complications may be curtailed. What might sound advice sound like? Advice like suggesting not eating meat at all might be an effective strategy. Population studies have consistently shown that vegetarians are thinner than comparable non-vegetarians. Let’s look at the largest such study to date. A body mass index over 30 is considered obese, 25 to 30 overweight, and under 25 an ideal weight. The non-vegetarians were up at 28.8, showing the average meat-eater is significantly overweight. As one gets more and more plant-based, the average BMI drops. But even the average vegetarian in the U.S. is overweight. The only dietary group that was, on average, ideal weight were those eating strictly plant-based. It comes out to be about a 30-pound difference between the vegans and the meat-eaters. In school-aged children, the consumption of animal foods (meats, dairy, or eggs) is associated with an increased risk of being overweight, whereas plant-based equivalents like
4 - Inland Solutions Magazine - August/September Agosto/Septiembre 2015
veggie burgers, veggie sausages and veggie cold cuts were not. The whole plant foods like grains, beans, and nuts were found to be protective. This may be because plant-based diets are low in energy density and high in starch, fibre and water, which may increase feelings of fullness and resting energy expenditure, meaning resting metabolic rate. Eating plant-based appears to boost metabolism, such that you just burn more calories at rest. However, we’re not sure how much of the benefits are due to increased consumption of plant foods versus decreased consumption of meat. “Plant-based diets should be encouraged and promoted for optimal health. Local, national and international food policies are warranted to support social marketing messages and to reduce the social, cultural, economic and political forces that make it difficult to promote such diets.” For example, although the advice to consume a plant-based diet is sound, questions arise concerning the relatively high price of produce. We could reduce the burden of childhood obesity and prevent further spread of the disease, but we need to ensure that plant foods are affordable and accessible to children of all income levels. Getting diabetes in childhood cuts about 20 years off their life. Fruit and vegetables may not fit on the Low Cost Menu, but our kids are worth it.

Hair and Beauty by Siobhan Bellion It's summer time and we all love to laze around by the swimming pool or relax on the beach. What we tend to forget is how much more damage the sun in Spain causes to our hair and nails, especially to coloured, permed or dry/ fragile hair and also to our skin and nails. So here are a few ideas on giving your hair and nails a bit of extra tlc during the summer months.
Hair 1) For fine hair, sensitive scalps and especially men with receding , thinning hair, always wear a hat or scarf to cover your hair, it provides extra UV protection but also helps your scalp retain moisture. 2) Wash your hair less. When you frequently wash your hair it strips your scalp of its natural oils, which in turn stimulates additional oil which makes you feel the need to wash it more often. Here are some ideas to try out so you can try not to wash so often: 1. Rinse and condition your hair with clear water after a day out at the beach or in the swimming pool. 2. Use a dry shampoo in place of a regular shampoo. 3. Dab a cotton wool bud in witch hazel and dab it on your scalp to dissolve excess oil. 3) Reduce the heat!! Try avoiding as much as you can hair dryers, straighteners and tongs. Also a sleek hairstyle only makes frizz stand out more. 4) Conditioning: For a quick natural conditioner rinse apply a small amount of apple cider vinegar on your hair and rinse out, to smooth, de-frizz and moisturise your locks after washing. Be careful as it can be heavy. Also deep condition once a week. 5) Use a wide tooth comb instead of a brush. Avoid pulling anything through your hair when it's wet since that's when it's most susceptible to breaking. Wide tooth combs are the most gentle for un-tangling hair, as brushes can pull and tear when they snag strands.

Nails Summer time can mean a healthy time for nails if they are looked after properly, so wearing open-toed shoes helps the air to circulate. Which means less sweating and less moisture. Here are a few tips on how to keep you nails looking there best and also ways to avoid nail infections. 1) When applying sun cream to your face and body don't forget to do your hands and feet too! Especially your cuticles. Cuticles serve a purpose. They seal in moisture and protect new nail growth as it emerges from the base of the nail. The wind, sun and sand can dry cuticles and nail folds which is bad for your nail growth.
Even with the best nail products your nails still need a rest and to breathe.
2) Do you take your nails to the extreme with gel and glitter polish? Extreme nails doesn't have to mean harsh nail remover. Try a home removal with pure acetone from your local farmacy 3) Go naked!! Even with the best nail products your nails still need a rest and to breathe. If your nails are brittle, break easily or look un-healthy ditch the polish for a few months!! 4) To avoid catching a foot infection, avoid going barefoot in public places at all time. 5) Wear breathable footwear. The more air that's able to circulate around your feet, the drier and less susceptible to toenail fungus they'll be. The best quality Shampoos and Conditioners are sold at your local Hairdressing Salons and not in the Supermarkets. However if you fancy making your own shampoo out of natural ingredients, here is a recipe for a home made natural shampoo which works on most hair types:
Ingredients ¼ cup coconut milk (homemade or canned) ⅓ cup Liquid Castille Soap 20 drops of peppermint, lavender, rosemary and orange or combinations of those For dry hair: add ½ tsp olive or almond oil (optional)
Instructions 1. Combine all ingredients in an old shampoo bottle or jar of some kind (pump soap dispensers

and even foaming dispensers work well for this. If you use a foaming dispenser, add ¼ cup of distilled water) 2. Shake well to mix. 3. Keep in shower for up to a month. 4. Shake before each use. 5. Use about a teaspoon every time you shampoo. 6. If you use a foaming dispenser, it also makes a great shaving cream- just dilute with ¼ cup distilled water

Oreo Cheesecake Oreo biscuits 2 tbsp melted butter 100gr Philadelphia (at room temp) 3 tbsp icing sugar 1/4 tsp vanilla extract 250ml cream (cold and whipped) Get 8 biscuits and crush them, add the melted butter and mix well until everything well combined. When finished, spread the mixture into the bottom of the cake mould. In a bowl, whip the cream until it peaks, and then put it in the fridge. In another bowl add the Philadelphia, icing sugar and the vanilla extract. Mix until it’s all blended in and a creamy texture, then add the whipped cream. Fold it all in and add 2 Oreo biscuits well crushed. To finish, add the mix to the cake mould on top of the biscuit base. Cut a few more biscuits up in half and add to the top of the cake. Put in fridge for 5-6 hours, and serve.

3 Must Know Tips for Traveling With Your Pets Whether you’re taking your dog on a cross country vacation, or flying your cat overseas to your new home, traveling can be a stressful experience for everyone involved. Proper planning and preparation can go a long way to making the journey run as smoothly as possible so that you can enjoy your travel adventure with your furry friends.
1. Selecting the Right Travel Method for Your Pet’s Character While some animals love the excitement of going in the car and being on the road, others can become very frightened and nervous by the ordeal. If you’ve never taken your pet on a long journey before, it might be best to get them used to traveling in the car before you go by taking them on some shorter journeys first. Dogs can either travel in a crate or with a seat belt in the rear of the vehicle. Nervous and overly excitable dogs are best suited to a crate as it allows them to settle down in a more secure and comforting area. If your dog is anxious about getting into the crate, you can introduce them to it over time by leaving the side open and encouraging them to explore it without locking them in. You can even put their favorite blanket or toy to make it a more appealing proposition for them. Cats are generally much easier travel companions as you can simply place them into their cat carrier with some cozy blankets and a bowl of water, and they will often sleep their way through the journey. If you’re embarking on an epic journey, you might need to consider getting a larger carry cage with room for a small litter tray.
2. General Care and Wellbeing Understanding how to care for your pets during the journey will ensure that they arrive at their destination safe and sound. Heat: Temperatures can get extremely hot in vehicles during the summer months, so make sure that you’ve always got adequate airflow and shade for your animals. Hydration: If possible, provide water for your pets in their crate carry case, but if this is not practical, make sure you take plenty of breaks along the way so that you can offer them a drink. Toilet Breaks: Younger animals may require lots of toilet breaks during a journey, so make sure you factor this into your journey time, and keep your eyes open for suitable resting places along the way. Restlessness: Your pets will be much more comfortable and content in the car if they have been for a really long walk beforehand. If you’re travelling in excess of 12 hours, you will need to provide them with plenty of exercise along the way. Sickness: Some animals just don’t travel well, and will feel nauseous and sick every time they go in the car. Prepare for this by keeping lots of clean blankets and tissues with you. You can also speak to your vet beforehand to see if there is anything that can be given to ease the sickness.
14 - Inland Solutions Magazine - August/September Agosto/Septiembre 2015
3. Legal Issues With Pet Travel There are many different rules and regulations regarding pet travel in different locations, so make sure you do your research before leaving. If you’re travelling abroad, you may require a pet passport, and depending on your destination, your pets might also be obliged to have certain vaccinations. You need to plan well ahead for this as some vaccines need to be given up to 10 weeks before the travel date; don’t leave this to the last minute. Wherever you are planning on traveling with your pets, making sure you are well prepared is essential for ensuring a safe and enjoyable trip for all.

A Fitting Send Off Before the Annual Armed Forces Day Picnic, Branch Chairman Marty Power asked members to remember in their prayers former secretary Christine Watson who sadly died last Friday and whose funeral was taking place in Fuengirola coincidentally at the same time as the picnic was starting. Reminding members of the sterling efforts of Christine over many years, Marty encouraged members to raise a record sum for the Poppy appeal.
A Fantastic amount Exactly €600 was raised at the final fundraising event before the summer break and Lesley Taylor (Poppy Appeal Organiser) thanked the team of volunteers who had donated, prepared and served the food as well as those who organised the various games and raffles. Without these efforts, she stressed, The Poppy Appeal would only exist around Remembrance Day and that would be a tragedy. 75 people attended and the event was enjoyed by all.
A Big Thank You To volunteers and supporters who make days such as this possible. Enjoy the Summer break and see you in September . The next meeting of the Mollina Branch will be on 8th September @11am at Parque La Vina in Mollina but the branch can be contacted via fortnightly stall a Saydo Market or on punshon.dave@gmail .com

Fuente de Piedra
Pink Charity Walk 30th May 2015 This now the 5th year that Fuente De Piedra with the support of other local villages has held a Pink Charity Walk to raise funds for Spanish and British Charities. We started at Bar Arte in the Plaza at 8pm. Around 25 people (and dogs! though no prams this year) walked 5km along the lake. We had marshals along the paths with drinks and cars in front and behind. A big thanks to them. We had pink envelopes and 2 charity boxes for people to give donations if they so wished. The donations continued to come in well into June. The total raised was 720euros - a great effort and we would like to thank all those who took part and/or gave so generously. We had lots of helpers as well, blowing up balloons, making ribbons etc. A big thanks to them also. 360 euros have been given to AECC in Spain and the equivalent in pounds (270) sent to Breast Cancer Care in England. Keep a look out next year around the same date and come and join us. Grateful thanks again

David Beckham Pele, Maradona, Beckham. Each footballing nation has an icon that comes to represent not just football, but the wider story of a nation. This is what Pele - full name Edson Arantes do Nascimento - symbolises to Brazil. It is what has seen Maradona - full name Diego Armando Maradona Franco - became a Argentinian hero. So it is then, throughout his life and times, David Robert Joseph Beckham has come to symbolise English football. Yet, every great story must have a beginning, so we begin with Beckham’s in Leytonstone, East London.
English Years Beckham grew up as so many English boys do, kicking a football around their backyard and on a soccer pitch over the weekend. Yet, upon his joining of Manchester United as a trainee in 1991 at just 16 years of age, it became clear this was a young man who had a real potential to be a standout. While Beckham may have begun the 1990s as a young unknown from Leytonstone, he ended it as an icon. An in-depth look at how that came to be, represents a terrific saga for this Englishman, who built a life’s work off stunning free kicks and beautiful long-range crosses. While Beckham’s career shows many teams longed to have him wear their shirt, it is also clear he joined Manchester United at a brilliant time. Beginning an era in which manager Ferguson would preside over a storied stewardship of the team - seeing them largely dominate English football and regularly rank in the top international club sides- and bringing to David’s early career an immense amount of glory. Over the course of his English Premier League career with Manchester United, Beckham won the Premier League Title six times, the FA Cup twice, and in 1999 the UEFA Champions League
title. Yet, in the early years of the 2000s it became clear that Beckham and United were going in different directions and the process to separate began.
Spain Initially, Manchester looked to sell David to Spanish Club Barcelona. Indeed, it was even announced by both that a deal had been done. Yet, Beckham instead went across to Barcelona’s arch-rivals Real Madrid, generating much embarrassment for both his old team and new rival. With the move to Real Madrid came a turbulent time – for though Beckham enjoyed some success as a player throughout this era – the wider team largely failed to meet expectations. This is especially so given a lineup that included the likes of other stars like Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo. After four years with a club including two seasons winning the league title and two coming runners-up to rival Barcelona, Beckham decided to make a new move. Announcing his signing with the LA Galaxy in 2007 Beckham looked to America with a view to legacy. Like Pele before him, Beckham went to the USA Major League Soccer –a league generally regarded as having a lower standard of skill and competition than Europe’s – with a view to not only play, but also to promote the game in the U.S. It was in the years ahead that Beckham began the shift in Hollywood from being a footballer exclusively to a wider ambassador for football globally. While Beckham’s career ultimately concluded with his retirement aa an LA Galaxy player in 2013 there was time spent on loan during this period to Italian club Milan and French side Paris Saint-Germain and with this the winning of a rare accolade having played in all major footballing leagues save for Germany’s Bundesliga during his career. With such international glory surrounding him from a club perspective, it is now a good time to look at Beckham’s national team record.

International years While Beckham may have had a brilliant career with Manchester United and other prestigious clubs across the footballing world, his international career faced decidedly more turbulence. Since 1966 and its famous victory on home soil England has looked to win another World Cup. Alongside other players of an outstanding footballing generation like Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard, though Beckham never quite reached a World Cup final, he did play a starring role in some spectacular games. Personal life David Beckham and Victoria Beckham were a publicist’s match made in heaven. They met at a time that could not have been more perfect for the two young lovebirds, with their
Alongside Victoria numerous other factors contributed to the growth of Beckham mania. In the first instance, his choice of teams to play for. Alongside Manchester United, Beckham’s wearing of a jersey for teams such as Real Madrid, Paris Saint Germain and LA Galaxy all ensured Beckham’s games would receive substantial media exposure and fan attention. Then there is all the endorsement deals. Whether for Adidas, Pepsi, Emporio Armani – or the promotion of David and Victoria’s own fragrance and fashion lines – David became a common sight across many billboards and TV screens in Europe and further afield. David and Victoria have had four children together. Brooklyn, David’s first son born in 1999. Romeo James born in 2002, Cruz in 2005 and a daughter Harper born in 2007. Just as their father has spent much of his life both on the field and in front of a camera, Brooklyn and Romeo have both done modelling work. With all the fanfare and pursuits surrounding Beckham many have questioned to what extent he is truly a footballer for the ages. Yet, some facts illustrate he indeed is. Alongside being the first English player to win a championship title in England, Spain, France and the US, his career of twenty years affirms his staying power. Lastly, any doubts lingering over his impact whenever on the field need only click on Youtube and type in ‘David Beckham right foot cross’. The sheer abundance of the results that follow underscore just what a star David Robert Beckham was – off the field certainly – but as footballer first and foremost.

which included a stunning goal by a free kick from Beckham, his efforts in the 5-1 demolition of Germany in qualification for the 2002 World Cup and his free kick against Ecuador in 2006 which made him the first English player to score in three different World Cups, all rank foremost in fans' memories. Beckham also served as captain of the team from 2000 through to 2006 providing a clear sign of his talents both on and off the field. However, in spite of the success there has also been controversy, with his red card against Argentinian Diego Simone in the 2002 World Cup quarter finals seeing him sent off, and England ultimately losing the match via penalty shootout. Though it was later held Simone had deliberately dived – and got away with his own rough challenge on Beckham earlier in the game – the event and subsequent fallout was amongst the lowest points of Beckham’s footballing career.

A member of the Spice Girls, the all-girl pop group that delivered to the masses countless number 1 hits such as ‘Wannabe’ and ‘Viva Forever’. The songs entered into music history, yet Victoria was just getting started. Of all the success of each Spice Girl since their split in 2000 it is undoubtedly Victoria’s that has been the most immense. It was with success that David’s status rose also; from great footballer to cultural icon.

There could be a slight phase when life slows down a little (but not enough to alarm you), so use that time to make phone calls and surprise friends who have been complaining about your lack of time for them. Your hard labor has produced abundant fruits and you may want to rest on your laurels now. The Tarot feels otherwise; so, there is the need to consider new business perspectives after an objective evaluation of your efforts so far. Older Libran children may want to experience boarding school life.
By the end of the week you are ready to take a break by getting away or the weekend or spending time just chilling out with people you love. But at the beginning of the week keep your feet planted firmly in the 'here and now' while you reach towards great heights. If you intuitively feel you are heading in the wrong direction, then break away. What will help you is your ability to take events in your stride, always keeping the positive outcome in mind.

Some Scorpios beginning a new job may feel a little restricted initially, but focusing on essentials will soon put you on the smooth path once again. Emotional and loving Scorpios need to put aside savings for a rainy day. The Tarot encourages you to seek ways and means by which you can simplify your daily life, thus giving you more time to devote to the things which matter to you. This does not mean you need to shirk responsibility; in fact, it is quite the opposite..
Confidence, ability and a never say die attitude would be the keywords this week. Fighting competition in a fair and just manner and emerging the winner is how the outcome should be for you, says the Two of Swords card; and this is how you play to win each time. There would be an offer of a temporary transfer in the near future and accepting it boosts your career prospects in a big way. At the best of times, Aquarians are assertive, but in the coming cycle, you would have to be boldly assertive and stand up for your rights.

Remember to appreciate to the full those whom you love, for all life stages are transitory and changes will occur whether you wish for them or not, says the Tarot.
A change in office premises, buying or renting is indicated with the Six of Rods card. Income Tax in Spain by John Garner, Flamingo Park This year has seen the Spanish government become more aggressive in recovering income tax. This has resulted in numerous articles in English written newspapers giving a somewhat confusing picture of who is required by law to both register and where necessary, to pay their income tax in Spain. If you have a residencia certificate or reside in Spain for more than 183 days in one calendar year, you are a '' fiscal resident'' of Spain and MUST register with and pay all income tax in Spain. The only exception is for UK goverment pensions, military, civil service, etc... but not NHS. These pensions at present remain taxable in the UK but must still be reported to the tax authorities in Spain.
DUAL TAX AGREEMENT Agreed by EU countries in 1973 to prevent anyone having to pay income tax twice on their earnings in any one calendar year. In essence, Spain could have demanded back tax from anyone classed as a '' fiscal resident'' as far back as 1973. Spain, however, has a 5 year limit on income tax debt. The Spanish government recently decided to recover its old taxes from foreign EU fiscal residents and subsequently called an amnesty for tax recovery from January 1st 2010. The Spanish income tax year runs from January 1st to December 31st. The previous year's income tax must be paid by the 30th June each year. Payment is usually paid by direct debit from your nominated bank. If you are in any doubt of your taxation responsibility, contact an accountant, preferably one who is aware of the dual tax agreement. You are able to recover the income tax you have paid in the UK by contacting the UK pension office and obtaining document '' Spain Individual''. After paying your income tax in Spain you need to obtain a receipt in the form of document '' Residencia Fiscal en España Convenio'' from La Agencia Tributaria. This document is attached to the Spain Individual form and returned to the UK pensions office in Cardiff.

Smart Meters and the New Facturation as of 1st July 2015 POSTED BY RICHELLE DE WIT / INFORMATION TOPIC, NEWS ARTICLES As of the 1st of July 2015 the digital and tele-operated ´smart´ meters will be used to register hourly fluctuations in the price of consumed electricity and this will be reflected on your electricity bill. Almost 11 million households will be affected by this new regulation. By the end of last year 14 million digital meters were installed, but not all of them are tele-operated. Electricity suppliers have until the 1st of October to adopt the new system. By the end of December 2018 all traditional meters are supposed to have been switched for the new digital ones. The prices for each day will be published on the website of Red Electrica Española, as of 20.15 hrs the day before. I have checked the website and not seen a specific feature for that yet, but will make sure to check again sooner to the date. There are various Apps available as well, that can help you anticipate the fluctuations. All those with a tele-operated digital meter and on a contract with the PVPC (Precio Voluntario al Pequeño Consumidor - what used to be the TUR tariff) tariff will be affected by this change. Those on a contract that offers a fixed price for a whole year, are not. Practically all electricity companies can offer an hour-to-hour billing system, but the system as regulated by the state can only be offered by ´commercializadores de referencia´ amongst which are Endesa, Iberdrola, Gas Natural Fenosa, EDP España y E.ON España. With the new regulation in force, more companies can join if they meet certain requisites. Will this new facturation result in lower electricity bills? Well, that depends on your consumption habits and whether you can arrange to have appliances operating during ´low cost´ hours, basically corresponding with the hours that used to have the cheaper part of the night/day tariff, which will become obsolete with the new regulation in place. It may sound frivolous, but it will also depend on how the wind blows... on days with more wind the greater production of wind energy will likely cause the prices to drop. Also, only about 37% of your electricity bill is based on actual consumption, the rest is made up of taxes and fixed rates for the contracted power etc.
30 - Inland Solutions Magazine - August/September Agosto/Septiembre 2015
For those on ´Bono Social´ - that will continue, they will receive a discount of 25% on the hourly rates. Consumer organisations have denounced this new regulation as it has been negotiated exclusively with the electricity companies, without any involvement of organisations that represent the consumers. They also fear the bills will be very complicated to read.
Operation Summer by Trafico 1,500 Extra Speedtraps POSTED BY RICHELLE DE WIT / INFORMATION TOPIC, NEWS ARTICLES DGT/Trafico have announced that as a part of their programme to periodically arrange for increased speed vigilance on selected roads, they have now arranged for 1.500 mobile radar units to be set up on ´carreteras secundarias´, i.e. the roads that connect one town to the next (with generally one lane for each direction), coinciding with the first weekend of July when a lot of extra movement on the roads is expected because of people travelling to their summer holiday location. The operation “Operation Summer” will start on Friday July 3rd. The locations of the 1.500 mobile speedtraps will be published on the DGT Webpage. http://www.dgt.es/es/el-trafico/control-develocidad/index-radares.shtml According to the DGT, the mobile radar units will be visible to conductors, not hidden out of sight. To remind you, on the secondary highways the maximum speed limit for regular private vehicles is 100 km/hr when there is a hard shoulder of at least 1,5 m wide and 90 km/ hr if it is less wide than that.

Walking The Caminito Del Rey with Nick & Mo
To be able to walk along the Caminito del Rey has been on my bucket list, (things I want to do before I ‘kick the bucket’) since I first came to live in Spain. On countless occasions I have looked up at the tiny walkway clinging to the side of the gorge at El Chorro, hoping that I would one day be able to be up there looking down. In April of this year I was finally able to fulfill my wish. So what is El Caminito Del Rey? Well the name in English literally means the King’s little pathway, but is also referred to as El Camino del Rey, the King’s pathway and is a narrow, one metre wide, walkway built onto the side of the gorge at El Chorro, in Malaga province. The walkway was originally built for the workers to gain access to the hydroelectric plants at Chorro and Gaitanejo falls and opened in 1905. When King Alfonso X111 walked along the path in 1921 it gained it’s royal connection and it’s modern name.
The Caminito del Rey was originally constructed of concrete, supported by steel rails. It was one metre wide and, at its highest point, rises over 100 metres above the river below it. When I first saw the pathway some fifteen years ago it had already fallen into a state of disrepair and in many places there were large gaps where the concrete had fallen away, leaving only the steel support rails. The fact that the path was completely perilous and unsafe did not stop many brave, or some would say foolhardy, people trying to walk its length. It became known as the world's most dangerous walkway and a number of stomach churning videos were made by people with helmet cams. A number of people died in falls from the walkway and, following two fatal accidents in 1999 and 2000, the pathway was closed at both ends. Although illegal, people continued to climb up to the walkway and on many occasions when we visited El Chorro numbers of people could be seen up there.
32 - Inland Solutions Magazine - August/September Agosto/Septiembre 2015
will not be allowed though to the walk. Some people have thought it ok to just turn up without booking or having the correct paperwork and have, quite rightly, been turned away. The Caminito del Rey may be a lot safer than it was, but it is still dangerous and the staff need to know exactly who is on the walk at all times. The official website also offers lots of other information and apart from a glitch at the beginning, when it crashed because of the sheer number of people wanting to book, it really is very good. Choosing which entrance you wish to start the walk from when you book is really important. One entrance is at the Ardales, Embalses end, close to the El Kiosko Restaurant, while the other is at the El Chorro, Alora end, by the railway station. If you arrive by car you will need to park at either of these points and then walk to the starting point. From El Kiosko this is appx 2.5k, so you will need to allow something
Out and About With Nick & Mo
In 2011 the regional government of Andalucia and the local government of Malaga agreed to share the cost of restoring the Caminito del Rey and work began. The walkway re-opened to the public in March of 2015 and can only be described as a resounding success. People from all over Spain and further afield have walked, or plan to walk the Caminito del Rey and it has been listed by ‘Lonely Planet’ as one of the best new attractions. Booking your place to walk the Caminito del Rey is via the official website. The website is very comprehensive, and the booking process is easy. You choose the date and time you wish to go and the entrance you want to start from and you are then issued with an e ticket, which you show at the entrance, along with I.D., passport, or NIE, when you do the walk. This is really important, because if you do not have the relevant documents when you get to the gate, you

like 40 minutes to get to the gate. From the railway station it is not quite so far to the start, but you still need to allow 15/20 minutes to get to the gate and, whatever end you start from you will need to factor in the extra distance to your overall walk! When you get to the end of your walk your car will of course be at the ‘wrong’ end. You have three choices then. You can choose to walk back, you can have friends pick you up, or you can take the available public transport, which will drive you back to the start point. You will need to check on the transport before you set off though, as the day we did the walk there was none available and we had no option other than to do the return walk to El Kiosko to pick up our car. I booked for myself and three friends and we turned up on the day, only to be told that it was too windy for us to be allowed onto the walk. If you are thinking of doing the walk yourself you will need to be aware that certain weather conditions such as high winds, or heavy rain will mean that the walk will be closed. Safety is paramount and so it should be. I contacted the admin, via the website, explaining that we had been unable to complete the walk and asking if it was possible to get a cancellation for another date and they could not have been more helpful, offering us another date on April 29th. I duly turned up on the 29th, along with a friend, David Knox, to walk the Caminito del Rey. As the group of people with our time slot, 1pm, assembled we were handed hairnets and hard hats and given a safety talk before setting out. It was explained to us that the total length of the Caminito del Rey itself is 2.9k, made up of 1.5k boardwalk and 1.4 k trails and pathways, mostly through forested areas. Right from the start of the walk it was clear that this was something special. The scenery was absolutely fabulous as we walked along the newly restored boardwalk, with the
huge canyon walls above us and the tumbling river below. I was immediately struck by the amount of birds and the noise that they made as they flew back and forth along the canyon, but particularly by the sheer amount of griffon vultures that were soaring above us. I guess that for the wildlife it must have come as quite a shock to suddenly have their solitude of the past decades disturbed by countless people walking among them, but if they were distressed they certainly did not show it. The new walkway is, in places completely newly built while in others it incorporates the old Caminito and you are aware of what a super job the engineers have made of constructing it, but I was also very aware of just what a feat it must have been for the men who constructed the original Caminito del Rey over 100 years ago, without the aid of helicopters, or all the other modern building aids. The walkway is still narrow; in some places about a metre wide and in others a little wider, but, although you can feel the wooden planks flex in places, it does feel safe and certainly a lot safer than the now deteriorated, original walkway which is still in place alongside, or just underneath the new structure. At one point on the new Caminito a piece of glass floor has been incorporated, and this is a really good and innovative feature. To stand on the glass and watch the river rushing over the rocks at the bottom of the gorge is quite something, but I felt that the glass could have been clearer, or maybe it just needed cleaning! At one point you come very close to the railway line to Malaga and it is quite something to watch the train appear out of one tunnel and disappear into another. You are also right next to the bridge where, it is reputed, they filmed part of ‘Von Ryans Express’ although I have never been sure whether this is fact, or just another urban myth.

After about 45 minutes we came to the end of the first boardwalk and found ourselves on a forest trail and, after the narrow gorge we had just come through the vista suddenly changed to a much larger and wider valley, very different, but, in every way, equally spectacular. As the path winds through the forested areas there are places to stop and take on some water and food and many people, including us, took the chance to do this. On this point, you must remember to take along water and food as there is nowhere to buy this along the Caminito itself and, without doubt, you will need it! After the change of scenery along the trail it was back onto the boardwalk for the last part of our walk and the climax of this part of the walk, for me at least, has to have been the new hanging bridge that has been erected to cross the mouth of the gorge. For those who do not have a good head for heights this is probably the part that will cause the butterflies in the stomach to flutter a little. It is of course very safe, but is suspended on huge wires and it does move when you are on it! There is a ranger there to make sure that the rule of no more than 10 people at a time on the bridge is adhered to, but some people looked decidedly unsure. The boardwalk from the bridge to the end of the Caminito is probably the most difficult of all as it goes up and down with quite steep steps and there is no doubt that you need to be at least reasonably fit to do the walk and particularly this part.
you are of average fitness, however, and just do the walk one way, you should have no problem at all. There are rangers at different points along the Caminito and part of their role is clearly to look out for people who may need assistance, as well as making sure that people adhere to the safety guidelines. The hard hats may be a nuisance and your head can get very hot and sweaty, but a large piece of rock falling onto your head can cause you serious damage! Did walking the Caminito del Rey meet my expectations and satisfy my long held dream? You bet it did and more. To be able to squeeze so many sensory experiences into such a short space of time was fabulous and certainly something that will remain with me for the rest of my life. It may now lack something of the element of risk that the original Caminito held, but that was for the few who were brave, or foolhardy enough to be able to do it. The new Caminito del Rey means that thousands of people are now able to experience the sheer emotion of this walk and from me, a huge well done to both Malaga and Andalucia for making it happen.
Out and About With Nick & Mo
Having reached the El Chorro end of the walk we were informed that there was not transport back to our start point and so we began the walk back. Not that we minded too much as it gave us yet more opportunities to experience the awe inducing scenery and take another hundred photos of some of the things we may have missed on the way out. I was able to see even more types of birds and different wildflowers that I had earlier missed and had more time to try to put some sense of scale to the dizzyingly high rock face on either side of me. One part of me wanted to get down to the turquoise coloured water of the river, rushing over the rocks at the bottom of the gorge, but that is for the wildlife that inhabits this place and I had to be content to marvel at the sheer beauty of it all.
By the time we got back to our starting point and handed in our helmets we had probably been walking for more than three hours and then had another 2.5k back to the car. Altogether we probably walked over 10k and, with the temperature being in the low 30’s I think we both knew we had reached the limit of what we could comfortably do. I would definitely say that you do not have to be superfit to walk the Caminito del Rey, but you do need to be reasonably fit and even a moderate physical impairment is going to make it more difficult as there is no wheelchair access. Tech Corner
Tech Corner - with Inland Computer Services 29th July arrives and Windows10 is here In the run-up to 29th July and the release of Windows10, you might have noticed a small icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, advising of the forthcoming upgrade and offering you the opportunity to register. Some users will already have upgraded by the time Inland Solutions goes to print and others will be unsure about whether their computer is eligible for the upgrade. But never fear, the handy chart below, explains very simply, whether you can enjoy the free Windows10 upgrade or not :
The size of the download for the upgrade is estimated to be in excess of 3Gb and if you have a data limit on your internet connection, this might have an impact on you, up until your next data reset. If this is a concern, or you are just unsure about whether you should upgrade or how to upgrade, then please pop in and see us, for a helping hand. It’s possible that some older computers, which started on XP or Vista and have upgraded to higher windows versions, might struggle with Windows10 in terms of available hardware drivers (older video or audio cards for example), but in the event that it’s not possible, an option to go back to what you had before should be available. 36 - Inland Solutions Magazine - August/September Agosto/Septiembre 2015

Cuentos
—Bueno, Kath... ¿cómo vas a llamarle? —Le llamaré Shiny. —¿Shiny...?
Shiny
To be continued… Francisco Sánchez Arjona.
Stories
Shiny had been a birthday present. Her parents would have given her whatever she asked for, but a dog…That did not seem like the best gift for a girl her age, but little Kath did not want anything else. She wanted a dog. It was the only thing she had wanted for years and the only gift that she wanted for her eighth birthday. But Katherine did not want just any dog; she wanted an English Mastiff. Katherine had Down’s Syndrome and, although she was older than she appeared, she was “too immature to take care of a pet,” her parents thought. When they finally agreed to give her Shiny, her parents did so even though they were still not convinced that it was the right thing to do, afraid that the girl and the dog would not get along, asking themselves if it was perhaps too soon to give in to their daughter’s desires, worried by the thought that the dog would soon grow to outweigh the small girl…No, little Kath’s parents were not certain that they had done the right thing. “Will she be ready to take care of it?” they asked themselves silently as the little girl took the puppy, with its floppy ears and wrinkled folds of skin, into her arms for the first time. “Will the dog be dangerous for her once it gets older?” they said while the girl and the puppy played on the carpet in the living room for the first time, contemplating the mastiff’s large head, imagining how much those paws would grow… “Well, Kath, what are you going to call him?” “I will call him Shiny.” “Shiny? Why Shiny?” “Because his eyes shine when he looks at me.” Despite the happiness on their daughter’s face, the night of Katherine’s eighth birthday, her parents went to bed worried. They were not convinced that they had done the right thing by giving in to Kath’s request, afraid that she was not ready to take care of Shiny and that Shiny, once he grew up, would be dangerous for Kath.
But they would have gone to bed with much more peace of mind if they had realized that love is at the heart of taking care of anything, that we cannot care for anything better than that which we love, and that no one will protect us unconditionally unless it is motivated by unconditional love, just like the love that grew between the girl and her dog. Katherin and Shiny became inseparable from that very first day. In the beginning, when Shiny was only a puppy with a sweet face and a thick, wrinkled coat, little Kath would pull him eagerly into her lap, back when the two of them fit on the sofa; then, when Shiny reached adulthood, when he was no longer a little ball of fur on legs and instead became a gentle giant and protector, the little girl laid across Shiny’s back instead. The relationship between Katherine and Shiny was soon not just a relationship between a girl and her pet but rather a true friendship and a therapeutic friendship for the girl, a friendship that quickly helped young Kath with social integration, even helping her to leave her small, isolated world. And, with the passage of time, the friendship that grew from their precious relationship, one of those truest and most honest of relationships; more than friendship, this was love, a love based on the truth of silent embraces, one of those rare loves that survives time and coexistence. As the years passed, Katherine made friends, friends without any sort of mental disability…But Shiny was the only one of her friends that did not have any prejudices, the only one that did not care about IQ, a friend to whom only one thing mattered: the love that shone in Kath’s eyes every time she looked at him. Puberty was not easy for Katherine; adolescence was even harder. But she always found comfort after those daily struggles with Shiny, a refuge where she could feel safe from all her fears; all of Katherine’s insecurities disappeared when Shiny bounded up to greet her, when she hugged his neck while Shiny licked her face, when Shiny licked her hands while she stroked his snout, when she leaned against him and laid her head against his back…Then, nothing mattered, because she had nothing to fear; because, with Shiny, life seemed kinder, less cruel. But love does not last forever…
