Inland Solutions Magazine - April/May Abril/Mayo 2016 -

Introduction

Hola Everyone,

Hola a todos:

Well here we are again, and although this edition of the magazine is a lot smaller, I´m sure that you will enjoy the content just as much. With the referendum looming in June you might find the article on page 14 interesting as it tells you how you are still eligible to vote if you have lived in Spain for less than 15 years.

Paul of the Five Rivers Indian Restaurant, is now open for Take-A ways only from Tuesday to Sunday and from 7pm to 11pm. And talking of eating places we always enjoy our coffees, teas, tapas and snacks in the Cafeteria/Bar Amapola in Eroskis at Antequera, where you are guaranteed a warm welcome. Spring is now on the doorstep and hopefully this will mean a lot less colds, flu and illnesses because again this Winter there have been quite a few deaths in the area. A big thank you to all our regular advertisers, article writers, proof reader, distributors and readers as without your continued support I would not be able to produce the magazine at all.

Take Care

Out and About With Nick & Mo

Estepona - A Change for the Better Whether you are a regular or just occasional visitor to Estepona you cannot fail to notice that the town has undergone some substantial changes during the last few years. Estepona has managed to retain much of the charm of its old town and has not allowed itself to be turned into a replica of some of the other coastal resorts. There are certainly many restaurants, tapas bars and small shops, but a notable absence of the bars and pubs that seem to have taken over some of the other coastal resorts. I am not knocking them and I know that a lot of people like their British grub and a pint of English beer, but it is so nice to be able to have a change and that is what Estepona provides.

Estepona really seems to be a good example of the town council and the local residents working together to improve the area and from what we have seen it certainly appears to be working. A good example of the resident/council collaboration is the way that a lot of the streets in the old town in particular have added flowers and plants to brighten up the area. There are many flowers and plants hanging from the walls and balconies and many of these have been colour coordinated by the residents and the net result is a total of over sixty flower lined streets. One street for example may have green pots full of geraniums, while another may have red pots full of begonias and so on. It really is surprising just what a difference the simple addition of plants and flowers can make to an area and it is really pleasant to walk around. Is there a lesson here perhaps for some other towns and villages on how to brighten up their streets and at the same time restore some civic pride? Another good contribution to the revamp of the town is the painting of murals on many of the high rise buildings. These murals really are striking and have been created by both local and professional artists. You can follow a designated mural walk, ( La Ruta de Murales Artisticos) and view lots of these wonderful creations, including Fishing Day, Watering the Garden, The House Of Good People and many more. Many of the other buildings have trees and climbing shrubs painted on them and, with the way the artists have cleverly also painted in the shadows, you would think, until you got very close, that they were real. It really is very difficult to do justice to these murals with a photograph and if you are able I would really recommend that you see them for yourself. 6 - Inland Solutions Magazine - April/May Abril/Mayo 2016

Another good contribution to the revamp of the town is the painting of murals on many of the high rise buildings.

Perhaps the jewel in the crown of the transformation of Estepona is the building and opening of the wonderful orchid house, Orquidario de Estepona. Opened in March of 2015 the orchid house is a most impressive building both from inside and out and is easily recognisable by its three glass domes, the largest of which is over 30 meters tall. Let me at this stage offer some advice to those who may be thinking of going to visit; finding a place to park on the streets can be as rare as finding rocking horse poo! You may just get lucky and find yourself a place, but you can, on the other hand, find yourself driving up and down narrow streets, using up unnecessary fuel and getting so frustrated that you want to head butt the steering wheel, or the person who has just nipped in to take the spot you finally found! Save all the grief and go straight to the underground car parks on the seafront. It is then only a short walk to the orchid house. Out and About With Nick & Mo

The orchid house is the largest of its kind in the whole of Europe and bigger than anything in the gardens at Kew. It is sited within 56,000m2 of newly created botanical gardens and has itself a footprint of some 12,000m2. Entry to the orchid house is currently free, although there is talk of an entry fee of a few euros in the future, but I am sure that no-one will begrudge paying a few euros to help towards the upkeep of this magnificent display. The orchid house is open from 11am until 2pm and again from 5pm until 8:30pm from Tuesday until Sunday and is very much disability friendly. Estimates vary depending on who you ask, but we were informed that there were some 1,600 species of orchid and some 8,000 other plants on display and that the majority of them originate from South America, or South East Asia. I did ask at reception if they had any written information about the orchid house and its contents, but was told that there was nothing available which was a little disappointing. There is some information available inside via audiovisual displays, but it would have been nice to have a leaflet to take away. Inland Solutions Magazine - April/May Abril/Mayo 2016 - 7

Out and About With Nick & Mo

The layout of the displays of orchids and other plants is very well done and as soon as you enter you are quickly aware that you need to be looking all around you so as not to miss anything, as there are plants displayed at ground level, but also at head height and higher, so it is worth taking your time. Some of the orchids are really tiny and quite difficult to spot hidden among the other plants, while others are much bigger and more like the orchids that we are used to seeing. The planting has been done to ensure that the flowering is staggered to ensure that there will be orchids and other plants in flower for people to see at any time of the year. The first section of the orchid house is divided from the other, larger part by a curtain of bamboo and the effect of walking through this into the next area, with light flooding down from the huge glass domes is quite spectacular. This area is arranged on two levels and a winding path will take you from the upper level down to the lower. One of the things we had been looking forward to was to see the 17 meter waterfall, which cascades down from the top level into an artificial lake at the bottom, but unfortunately on the day of our visit it was not running due to some essential maintenance and replanting. A bit of a disappointment yes, but also a great excuse to hurry back for a second visit! What we were able to see and all found really striking were the living walls of plants extending from the upper to the lower level. As gardeners ourselves we could see how difficult this amazing display would be both to create and to maintain. We were told that there is a special irrigation system that feeds the plants at the same time as watering them and it clearly works as the plants are thriving.

8 - Inland Solutions Magazine - April/May Abril/Mayo 2016

If you do decide to go to Estepona to visit the orchid house you can not fail to be impressed, but do try to allow more time to explore more of the old town with its lovely streets full of flowers and spectacular murals adorning many of the buildings. Estepona appears, so far at least, to have made a success of embracing the new, while retaining the best of the old, so, in our view, a good job well done.

Out and About With Nick & Mo

There are so many different orchids and plants on display that it is difficult to pick any out as being particularly special, but a couple that may be worth looking out for are the Cananga Odorata, or Ylang Ylang, the flowers of which are used by some of the high end perfume manufacturers such as Dior and Chanel and the Macrozamia Moorei, which is one of the few fossil plants to have survived from the age of the dinosaurs. Given that the orchid house has only been open for a year, the people who are responsible for the upkeep have done a remarkable job. It clearly still has some maturing to do and will clearly evolve and change over time, but our overall impression was that it is a wonderful achievement to have created both the orchid house and the botanical gardens that surround it in Estepona and is very much worth a visit.

Dear Customer, Once again in GASOLINERA EL LIMONAR we keep informing our client friends of all things related to the products and services that this, your gas station, has to offer. For anyone who doesn’t know yet we tell you that all gas stations are in the obligation to provide our clients with the means to verify the amount of fuel supplied. That means we have to provide you with a CERTIFIED AND AUTHORISED measuring flask, so not only our clients can know at every moment how much is being supplied to them but also means we can feel calm and reassured in offering even more than we are required by the norm. And it could not be any other way. Because an image is worth a thousand words here you can see our measuring flasks so our clients can once more confirm they choose us well. The last thing we want is to mislead anyone. Why do we offer even more than required by norm? Because, as we state in one of the images (which serves as reference) the norm allows and accepts 10 litres worth of fuel to be of 10 litres -1% however in its lower limit and all our flasks mark exactly 10 litres or the upper limit of +1%. Some clever-clogs could argue the flasks are fixed or that the temperature of the product is high so the volume appears higher than it actually is; as we’ve got nothing to hide, we explain that the fluid in the measured flasks was between 18 and 18.5 Celsius when poured. Furthermore you can see all pumps in every gas station must have a VEIASA sticker confirming they have been checked, certified and that they meet the standards. Likewise the seals and the pumps (they’re not visible because of being behind the plastic case) have to be intact, you can request to see them at any time. About the product, you just have to check the purity and complete absence of any strange particle or colour. Our fuels are loaded in the official loading stations and unloaded in our tank without any type of alteration. Remember you can check the amount of fuel supplied to you in any gas or service station. Check that the measuring flask is certified and authorised by VEIASA, if you don’t see the authorisation or you’re given obstacles when asking to check remember the suppliers are bound to do is and it is a right of anyone who pays. It is fair to be given what you pay for. If you have any suggestions which may help with our future plans, please feel free to give them to us.

Interesting Articles The vast majority of people cannot have failed to notice that on June 23rd of this year a referendum will be held in the UK to decide whether Britain remains in, or leaves the European Union. This will be a truly momentous vote and its outcome will make a huge difference to the lives of the British people, but particularly perhaps for those of us who chose to live as expats in places such as Spain. Quite what will happen to us as residents in Spain, if the decision is to leave the EU, no-one is yet sure. There are suggestions that it could affect our pensions, our health care here in Spain and a host of other things that we currently take for granted as expats. There is a counter argument that says that very little would happen and that things would continue much as they are now, so we should wait and see. People must make up their own minds about this, but, as far as I am concerned, sticking your head in the sand and pretending that nothing at all will happen is just plain daft, because, whether we live in Spain or in the UK there will undoubtedly be significant and far reaching changes to our way of life. So what exactly can you do to influence the outcome of the EU in or out Referendum? Well you can do the 'head in the sand' thing and pretend it is all a bad dream, or nothing to do with you. You can even utter those well-used words, “it doesn't matter what I do the result will be the same anyway. On the other hand you can vote. Rather surprisingly quite a few people still do not know that they are able to vote in the upcoming referendum, even though they are not living in the UK. Anyone currently living in Spain, who is a citizen of the UK and who was on the electoral register prior to coming to live in Spain is entitled to vote. However, this does currently only apply to those

14 - Inland Solutions Magazine - April/May Abril/Mayo 2016

people who have lived here for less than 15 years. There is a move in hand to change this rule to include those who have lived here for more than 15 years, but this will not happen in time for this referendum. So what do you need to do to be able to vote? You will need to be on the UK electoral register. This means that you will need to have been on the register at your last address prior to moving to Spain. Remember though that this currently only applies to those people who have been living in Spain for 15 years or less. Those who have been living here for longer are, unfortunately, not entitled to vote, even though they are British citizens. You will need your national insurance number and passport.

So there you have it, it is very easy and there is nothing stopping you voting in this hugely important referendum. The only thing you have then to decide is which way you will vote and that of course is entirely up to you. As for me, well I don't think I would be giving too much away if I said I am proud to be a British citizen, but I also feel very much a part of Europe and want to continue, for the foreseeable future at least, to live my life in Spain.

Interesting Articles

To actually complete the registration you can contact: www.gov.uk/register to vote. You can then complete the necessary form online and it really is very easy. You will have a number of options as to how you vote, either in person, by post, or by proxy, i.e. having another person vote for you. Do remember if you choose to vote by post that you will only get the necessary postal voting forms sent to you just prior to the vote and, given the uncertainty of the postal system, they may not get back in time! There are a number of other websites that have helpful information and if you google ' How expats can vote in the EU referendum' you will find plenty of these.

Ryan Giggs Ryan Joseph Giggs, known to most as Ryan Giggs or Giggsy is a Welsh former professional footballer and Assistant Manager at Manchester United. However an introduction as formal as this does not do justice to the most decorated player in English football history. Ryan Giggs has won 13 Premier League winner's medals, two Champions League winner's medals, four FA Cup winner's medals, three League Cup winner's medals, an Intercontinental Cup winner’s medal, a World Club Cup winner’s medal, a UEFA Super Cup winner’s medal and nine FA Community Shield winner’s medals. He was named PFA Young Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons and won the PFA Player of the Year award back in 2009. Ryan Giggs captained the Manchester United team on numerous occasions and is considered one of the greats at Manchester United and in English football. Ryan Giggs was born in Cardiff in 1973 but moved to Manchester when he was six years old. He played for a brief time during his youth career at Manchester City before making the permanent move to Manchester United. A leftfooted winger by trade, Giggs was lightning fast and his speed combined with his physical prowess made him one of the most feared players in his time. He fit perfectly into Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United and was a consistent part of the success Manchester United achieved under the Scottish Manager. Although the famous Ferguson’s era saw a lot of greats such as Cantona, Beckham, Rooney, Keane, Ferdinand, Schmeichal, Neville, Cole and Ronaldo, one player that was ever present in the side was Ryan Giggs.

left winger by end of the 91-92 season. He also occasionally captained the youth team as one of the famous Fergie’s fledglings. With the arrival of Eric Cantona, United’s dominance in the Premier League began. Giggs was 20 years old at the time and was already one of the most discussed players in English football. Many considered Giggs to be the ambassador of modern football. He was fast as a blizzard and was distinctively known for his powerful runs up and down the left flanks. Blessed with exceptional technique, Giggs was equally active in the ugly side of football as well. He would close down players and run beyond defender by just kicking the ball ahead of them.

Giggs holds the record for the most Premier League appearances at club level for Manchester United and the most appearances overall as well. He scored 114 goals in the 672 appearances he made for the Red Devils. The voyage started when Giggs was offered his professional contract on his 17th birthday. He became a professional footballer two days later. Sir Alex was on the hunt for a left winger after Jesper Olsen and was struggling to find a replacement. He scored his first goal for United against Derby opponents Manchester City. Giggs went on to become the first choice 20 - Inland Solutions Magazine - April/May Abril/Mayo 2016

He would often start off at the half way line and continue to run when a centre back had the ball and due to his steamy pace, his pressing would often yield back possession. Giggs was also an excellent team player who took delight in helping his fellows score. His crossing was pin point and was one of the reasons the United fans loved him. He would kick a ball across the left flank and then sprint towards it and deliver a pin point cross in the penalty box. He had a killer left foot and could shoot from distance if he needed too. Pace, directness, crossing, pressing and curve on the shot, he had them all and even by the end of his career, he would try things teenagers wouldn’t think of. His crossing capabilities earned him the most assists in Premier League history with 162. That’s 59 percent more than any other player. The player on number two is Frank Lampard with 102 assists. He also has the longest career in Premier League history and at the time he retired, only 12 teams had played more Premier League matches than the individual known as Giggsy. He is also the only player to have

played in 19 Champions League tournaments. These stats indicate the consistency of quality that Giggs provided in his career and the fact that injuries were never a prolonged part of the Welshman’s reign in English football. Cont’d overleaf...

stating how happy he was at Manchester United. He was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 2005 in recognition of his services and he played in his own testimonial aged just 29. On 31 December 2009, Giggs was named as the footballer of the decade for Manchester United.

Giggs was a media darling early on his career and many media outlets at the time argued that Giggs had completely revolutionized the style of football with his abilities. Hence Giggs was provided media opportunities that most players weren’t such as hosting his own television show. Giggs’ prominence in media overlapped with the shift in dynamics as football players gained iconic celebrity status such as rock stars. He was pictured on magazine and newspaper covers regularly and is often described as the first poster boy of modern football. Giggs scored many iconic goals in his career and as a result was a fan favourite. He never really had any intentions of swapping the club for another and for all his media involvement, he was rarely a part of transfer rumours often

Giggs made 64 appearances for Wales in his career and scored 12 goals. He also captained the Great Britain Team at the 2012 Summer Olympics. In the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2007, Ryan Giggs was awarded OBE (Order of the British Empire) Giggs retired as a player on 19 May 2014 and received many plaudits from pundits all over the globe for his services to the club he had served. Ryan Giggs became the interim manager of Manchester United when David Moyes was sacked by the club. He was then selected as assistant manager when Louis Van Gaal arrived and to this day serves the club in that position. Many people associated with football imagine Giggs returning to the managerial role at Manchester United because of his relationship with the club and fans and he still has a lot to offer to the club. Without a doubt, Giggs has been one of the most influential figures for United on and off the pitch for many years.

Tech Corner

Tech Corner - with Inland Computer Services Exodus for Kodi In the previous edition of Inland Solutions magazine, I wrote about Kodi and using the Genesis add-on to watch TV shows and films. A few days after going to print, Exodus, the successor to Genesis was released, bringing a number of improvements, notably performance and the ability to download and store items for watching later (obviously acting responsibility and ensuring that you are not violating any piracy/copyright laws...). The Exodus add-on can be obtained and installed, by using the TVAddons Fusion Installer. As a reminder, follow the instructions found on the webpage https://www.tvaddons.ag/fusion-installer-kodi/ , then click on Video Add-Ons and you will find Exodus, ready to be installed.

Exodus integration with Trakt.tv Another great feature of Exodus, is the integration with Trakt.tv, which is a website/platform offering a great way of keeping track of the TV shows and movies that you watch. Trakt is free and can be found at https://trakt.tv - Once registered, you can build lists of your favourite TV shows and by entering your 24 - Inland Solutions Magazine - April/May Abril/Mayo 2016

login and password for Trakt into Exodus, you will be able to use the integration capabilities, to identify the things you have already watched, or would like to watch in the future.

Concerns for Kodi development on the Android platform Several interesting articles on the web during the past few months, have suggested internal wrangling within Team Kodi, particularly with regards to the android platform and how many unscrupulous people are profiting from the sale of TV boxes which include poor quality and/or illegal add-ons. Team Kodi have decided to go to war on the android TV box manufacturers and the people who sell them, by trying to limit the future development of Kodi on the android operating system, effectively attempting to cut off the base and main purpose that the boxes are manufactured and sold for. In a blog posting dated 14th Feb 2016 on the Kodi.tv website, Nathan Betzen from team Kodi writes passionately about their concerns, notably describing the problem as “There have been a wave of sellers who decided to make a quick buck modifying Kodi, installing broken piracy add-ons, advertising that Kodi let’s you watch free movies and TV, and then vanishing when the user buys the box and finds out that the add-on they were sold on was a crummy, constantly breaking mess. These sellers are dragging users into the world of piracy without their knowledge and at the same time convincing new users that Kodi is a buggy mess, because they never differentiate Kodi from 3rd party add-ons. Every day a new user shows up on the Kodi forum, totally unaware that the free movies they’re watching have been pirated and surprised to discover that Kodi itself isn’t providing those movies.“ You can read the full posting on the following webpage of Kodi’s website https://kodi.tv/the-piracy-box-sellers-and-youtube-promoters-are-killing-kodi/ Technology website slashgear.com also commented on the Team Kodi stance and internal issues, reporting that “the main Android developer for Kodi, was driven out of the fold recently by some less-than-fabulous infighting in the community”.

It’s an interesting battle, but as is often the case, when one source/supply is shut down, it’s highly likely that an alternative won’t be far behind.

Another source, liliputing.com, reported that subsequently, the same developer, known as Koying has now departed from the Kodi team and has re-released his own fork of Kodi called SPMC (Semper Media Center), which is designed primarily for android and can already be found on Google Play Store.

Surprisingly Common Ways We Misinterpret What Our Pets Are Telling Us Is a wagging tail always the sign of a friendly dog? If your cat rolls on her back, does she really want you to rub her tummy? If your dog is " smiling" does that mean he is happy? As a veterinary behaviourist, I have to tell you, the answers to these questions might surprise you. There are some common behaviours that our dogs and cats exhibit that many people often misinterpret. Let’s review some canine and feline body language in order to help you determine what your pet is really trying to tell you. For example, tail wagging is not necessarily a sign of friendliness. In dogs, a wagging tail is an indication that the dog is willing to interact, but that interaction can be either aggressive or friendly. In order to determine what the dog is “saying,” you need to look at the rest of the dog’s body posture to figure out if he is approachable or not. Are the dog’s ears pinned back and flat against the head, sort of like a seal’s? Is his body and/or head lowered? Is he avoiding direct eye contact? Is he holding his body still or is he perhaps leaning away from you? These are all signs that the dog is uncomfortable and wants to avoid further interactions. Also keep in mind that a dog may not always choose to leave your vicinity in order to avoid a confrontation. Just as some people might just turn away from someone to avoid a conversation rather than move all the way across the room, a dog might try to stand, turn his head or hold his body away from you if he is uncomfortable. On the other hand, if the dog is being friendly, you might observe that he comes over to you and presents his side or hindquarters to be petted or scratched. He may nudge your hand for attention or press his body up against you. Or, when you look at the dog or speak to it, he may move closer to you for more attention and not bark or growl as he approaches. In cats, a “wagging” tail is definitely a sign of agitation . Cats don’t really wag their tails like dogs do. When relaxed, they tend to hold their tails quietly with minimal movement in comparison to a dog. So if a cat is moving her tail back and forth quickly two or three times in a motion I describe more as “whipping,” this might indicate agitation. It means something has caused the cat to be aroused, and it is best to give her some space and not interact with her until she has calmed down.

Tummy Troubles Another behaviour that we as humans often misread is when an animal rolls over onto its back. This is not always a sign that he or she wants a tummy rub. When a dog lies on his back, he is showing a sign of utter submission and appeasement in the dog world. People have chosen to interpret it as a sign the dog wants a belly rub. Many dogs may simply like attention, will take it any way they can get it and have learned to love their belly rubs. Other dogs, however, may feel really threatened by someone leaning over them while they are showing their most ultimate form of appeasement. Submissive behaviour is deferential behaviour used to tell the other dog that he wants to avoid conflict or a confrontation and that he needs space. When a dog rolls over onto his back, I typically ask him to sit up first before I give him attention to avoid this potential problem. Some people are really surprised when they try to pet a dog’s belly and he growls or snaps. While some dogs have been conditioned to receive attention in this manner and maybe even have learned to like it, always keep in mind that in the natural order of things, this is actually a signal saying, “give me space” or “do not hurt me.” 28 - Inland Solutions Magazine - April/May Abril/Mayo 2016
