Football Legends – John Charles Stuart Govier remembers one of the first players to move to a European footballing giant With all the hullabaloo and fuss following Gareth Bale’s move to Real Madrid you could be forgiven for thinking that it is the first time that a high profile Welshman had moved to foreign shores in a big money move. You would be wrong. Way back in the 1950’s Santiago Bernabeu, the Chairman of Real Madrid took the bold step of announcing that he wanted to build a side based on the best quality talent available to him in the world. He signed the likes of Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas but others took note of the success that this brought. One such club was Juventus in Italy who looked to Britain and in particular Yorkshire as they signed imposing centre forward John Charles from Leeds in 1957 for a record British transfer fee of £65,000. Charles was born in Swansea in December 1931 and is considered to be one of the most versatile, world class footballers to hail from the UK. Equally at home as a centre half or centre forward he is still considered to have god like status in Italy where he was christened “Il Buona Gigante” or Gentle Giant. It all began when he was signed by Leeds United as a fifteen year old making his debut two years later in 1949. Over the next eight years he played almost 300 games for the Tykes scoring an amazing 150 times. This is made more amazing when you consider he played at centre half for 3 of those years. At 6 feet 2 inches he was a big, bustling and imposing figure on the pitch but in all his career he failed to pick up a single booking or sending off. Despite his size he had a fantastic first touch and showed great control of the ball along with less surprisingly a bullet of a header utilising his powerful frame. His talent earned him a call up to the Welsh national side at the age of just 18 years and 71 days – the youngest ever and it was his classy international performances which brought him to the attention of Juventus.

6

In the summer of 1957 he joined Juventus in a deal largely engineered by broadcaster Kenneth Wolstenholme who had a lot of connections in the country and acted for Charles in his dealings. During his time in Italy he won 3 Serie A Championships and won the Italian Cup twice. In his first full season at the club he was the League’s leading scorer with 28 goals and went on to score 93 goals in his five seasons and 155 games with the “Old Lady”. Feeling homesick in 1962 he returned to Leeds United but his stay was brief and after a mere 11 games he was back off to Italy where he signed for Roma. He never could recapture that earlier form sadly and after just 10 games with Roma he joined Cardiff City and his career meandered to an end over the next three seasons. In 1966 with his pro career over he moved into non league football with Hereford United. Taking over as manager in 1967 he played well over 150 times for the Bulls - including games against my club Stevenage – and then for Merthyr Tydfil where he spent 2 years. He finally stopped playing at the age of 42.

Interesting Articles

Charles died in February 2004 at the young age of 72 but his impact on Italian football remains immense. He was even voted the Greatest Foreign Player Ever in Italian football beating the likes of Maradona, Michel Platini, Zinedine Zidane and Marco Van Basten – a measure of the talent he possessed.

Pepi’s Page

This is our newest addition, his name is Nunu, he has a Ligament damage and needs an operation, can you please help!

This is the other new puppy, one of five new dogs left at the refuge, we desperately need homes for these dogs. We have named him Caspar.

These are three of the five left at the refuge gates in the last two days, once again, desperately needing homes for them. Lovely natured dogs.

TIPS... Remember the Tick`s are in abundance again now, due to the mild winter, also flees, so you should make sure your pet is guarded against them as they can cause serious illness, even death. Also, don't forget your pet needs to be wormed every three month here in Spain, so don't go for a cheap option, always use a multi wormer to be safe.

POEM by Alan Brian DOG TIRED.... Well, we think the day is over as we finally go to bed, But its very hard to get to sleep, with events still buzzing in your head. You lay there often wide awake, when you really want to sleep, But one thing I know for sure, we wont be counting sheep. I wonder what tomorrow will bring, a lot more of the same, So many poor dogs abandoned, it truly is a shame. A refuge is no place for any dog, they should be in a home, So although I know we are second best, they will never have to roam. So if you ever take a dog, please make sure its got a forever home, Because we have to see the sadness in their eyes, when they are sick and all alone. Citizens Advice Bureau Spain

Tongues in cheek description of a visit to Spain You step off the plane and experience the warmth of a familiar westerly wind. Almost blinded by the intense sun, you check out the blue skies. This is a stolen week to relax at your holiday apartment. This time round, you have some questions you wish to pose. There must be someone who would be able to help ─ explaining how you deal with what should be the simple things in life. You are law-abiding, pay your annual taxes, your rates bill and the tax on your Spanish-registered car. In fact, you are a model non-resident, arriving at your Costa home for a well-deserved holiday. Arriving at your complex you take the lift to your apartment on the first floor. You open the door to be greeted by a leak similar to the one which had welcomed you on your last visit. Eventually, you had discovered that the trickle was originating from the flat above. This had finally been repaired ─ or so you thought. A small pool of water on the floor has dampened some of the letters of notification on your ‘welcome to España’ mat. Of course these letters are in Spanish and it is difficult to ascertain whether particular envelopes contain some form of advertising, or something more sinister. Your supportive neighbours, who had noted your arrival, scurry round, all willing to help and provide you with a magnitude of differing translations. After much discussion you are still none the wiser. So, you put the kettle on. A nice cup of tea will relax you. You wait; there is no reassuring sound of boiling water. Oh dear, there is no electricity supply. “Do we not have the bills paid by direct debit from the bank?” You check the fuses and then search the house looking for an old bill on which to find the electricity company’s telephone number. Darn; you remember that you have never received a bill at the property, and that you meant to do something about this on your previous visit a few months back. This was when your family situation dictated that you needed to come out for a short and relaxing break. As it happened, you were not able to visit the electricity board’s office, where you knew you would have had to arrive early, take a number and join the everincreasing queue. You actually did not find the time. It was not that you had spent the week lazing by the pool or visiting the sights, as you had so carefully planned before leaving home. No, not at all.

14

There were the arguments with the bank’s insurance company, relating to the leak from the flat above, and searching for and making contact with the owners of the apartment which was the source of the leak. Then there had been the problems at the AGM. (That year we broke all records and the heated reunion lasted for almost five hours). It was at that meeting that you discovered that the pool was not legal and would be temporarily closed; the perimeter street lighting had been turned off until it could be legally established that the cost of this was the responsibility of the town hall or the community. You were upset when you discovered that the administrator had posted your name up on the communal notice board to be seen by all and sundry as a debtor and furthermore, had denied you a new key to the pool. It took days to find out that the bank had paid your community fees into the wrong account. “A misprint,” they had said. Someone had parked in your garage space. When you did find out who the owner of the tatty vehicle was, he was not in residence. You had to speak to everyone to see if you could borrow an available parking space. As usual on that visit, the kitchen cupboards were bare. You were about to go shopping when the chatty neighbour, her with the red hair and freckles who always had a sunburnt nose, came running, gasping for breath, with a paper in her hand. “Here, take this, it is very important, it is your last year’s rates bill and it got posted in our postbox by mistake You must pay it immediately as you will already have to pay a surcharge. (The lawyer had set up the direct debit for the rates?) Remember to go to the rates office and queue up for a few hours to obtain a new bill, you cannot pay this one now, it is out of date.” Oh dear, this had meant that on the Monday morning, we were queueing at the town hall to obtain a new rates bill; Tuesday at the bank to discuss the insurance policy for the repair to the water damage; Wednesday with the plumber and plasterers to make reparations to the leak; Thursday morning the community matter and getting a key for the pool cut in order to make use of the pool whilst it was still open; Friday another trip to the bank as the director was available and to attempt to reclaim the community payments that they had erroneously paid into an unknown account; reinstate the direct debits and pay the new rates bill (with a surcharge of course); Saturday, caught a chill due to the stress, and on Sunday barely had time to pack. Exhausted, you had to drive in heavy traffic to the airport.

Myra Cecilia Azzopardi. 15

Citizens Advice Bureau Spain

So, will this trip be a matter of “here we go again?” No, the phone is still working. You call to obtain the number of the electricity company. When taking out the phone contract, you had been told there was an English-speaking service. You dial the operator and you are greeted by a recorded message in Spanish. You try to interrupt the machine to shout “the English department.” The recorded message continues. Your attempts to speak a few words in Spanish are futile. You look at your equally-distressed partner and say, “Come on love, we are going to the nearest bar.” And the locals say we are always drinking.

Tech Corner

Tech Corner - with Inland Computer Services Choosing Secure Passwords A quick tip for considering a safe password Many people use the same single password for email, shopping websites and other services requiring online authentication. In some cases, the chosen password is often a family name, date of birth or a familiar word , event or location, such as “holiday”, “birthday”, Spain2014 etc. Whilst this makes life easier for the user, it does present a potential security hole for outsiders to access all of your details on all websites that you have registered for. Most hackers use a brute/force process of trying a dictionary--load of words against email accounts, in order to try and find a way in. The safest method for choosing unique passwords is to generate an unfamiliar phrase, of at least 8 characters (the more the better), which includes alphanumeric characters and this should be different for each website you visit. There is a neat little trick for picking safe and unique passwords, which is also easy to remember 1.

2. 3. 4.

Think of your favourite song and use the initials of each word in the chorus or verse. For instance - When You Walk Through A Storm ... Becomes - wywtas Next, add an alphanumeric character, such as &+?#%$!1234567890 Add the first four letters of the website your are registering with For instance, for Amazon you would use amaz Put it all together and for Amazon, you would use a password of wywtas&amaz

When you register with a different website, you use the same combination and just change the 4 letters at the end to match the website name. So, if you registered with Yahoo, you password would be wywtas&yaho Similarly, Facebook would be wywtas&face So, you end up with lengthy, unique, unfamiliar passwords, which will hopefully be easy to remember.

Fuente Piedra will in the near feature have its own artificial football pitch The Fuente Piedra Town hall has all the permissions granted for the work which will be awarded to a local firm and will help create jobs and improve the economy in the village. Work will begin shortly. The works will involve an investment of 348,468 euros to be funded by (Planes de Concertaci贸n 2012 y 2013) regional government and 23 percent by the Town hall, announced the Lord mayor, Paco Hidalgo, adding that the government team has worked for a long time to get this project off the ground as it was in their electoral manifesto. The mayor added that the economic investment is considerable as the current crisis does not make it easy to get funding from the government and said personally he would have liked to have had less red tape for a project of this magnitude .

Regional Sports Councilor, Manuel Carri贸n said the artificial pitch will soon be a reality. "It's an installation long sought after by Fuente Piedras local sports enthusiasts and with these improvements hopefully attract more to join in". 19

Fuente de Piedra News

Meanwhile, Yolanda Gonz谩lez , works Councilor said the new sports facility will be located behind the Sports Centre on the existing football ground and incorporating the outdoor track area. This outer area will be affected by the construction of the artificial pitch for this reason local builders are working on a new paddle court.

Out and About with Nick & Mo

Out and About with Nick and Mo Setenil de las Bodegas One of the most interesting and unusual places we have visited recently is the small town of Setenil de Las Bodegas. Located in the province of Cadiz and not too far from Ronda, Setenil is easy to reach by road and there are reasonable public transport links, but be aware that if you were to travel by train, the station is some distance from the town itself. We had heard of Setenil, but were still not fully prepared for our first sight of this striking and unusual place. We visited on market day and so had to park the car on the hill leading out of the town, which was quite fortuitous as perhaps the best way to fully appreciate the uniqueness of this place is to look down upon it from above. Setenil is set in a gorge, with the Rio Trejo running along the bottom, The town is built on either side of the river, with many of the houses seeming to grow out of the side of the mountain itself, while others hang precariously to the side of the river gorge. It is not, however, until you get down to street level that you begin to fully appreciate the way that many houses, shops and bars in the town literally appear to be part of the mountain. We entered Setenil through Calle Cuevas del Sol ─ street of the caves of the sun where the shops and bars are set back under the rock ─ and, amazed though we were by the place itself, I for one was immediately aware of the thousands of tons of mountainside under which I was walking. Caught between a rock and a hard place seemed appropriate at the time! The market on Calle Cuevas del Sol was in full swing when we arrived, being a regular event each Friday from 8am until 2pm. On sale are fruit and vegetables, household goods, clothes and some crafts. The market, along with the shops and bars, gave the place a very busy feel and people told us that it can get very busy indeed in high summer, with many tourists adding to the local population. Perhaps this is something you will need to take into account if you are planning to visit. 22

We stopped for a coffee at one of the bars and when you go inside, you can clearly see how the buildings have been constructed by using the natural resource of the caves in the side of the mountain. To put it simply, the walls and ceilings are already there, so all you need to do is add the front. This is over-simplifying it of course, and while the basic structure is still a cave, some have been extended, others have added false ceilings and walls inside, but almost all have highlighted the natural features of the caves to give them a stunning effect. It made me think there are people willing to pay thousands of euros to create a similar look in their own homes when in these houses, nature has done it for free! We wondered just how hot or cold these places would be to live in, but were told that they are naturally cool in summer and warm in winter and, because of the way those on Calle Cuevas del Sol are facing, they get a good amount of natural light.

Sitting drinking our coffee outside the bar on a lovely sunny morning, you could be in almost any whitewashed village in southern Spain, but I could never quite get rid of the sensation of all that rock directly above my head. If you are born and raised in Setenil I guess you never give it a second thought, but I don’t think I would ever get used to it completely and would always have the thought in the back of my mind that it could fall down ─ particularly when you see some of the landslides after heavy rain in other areas.

23

Out and About with Nick & Mo

Exactly how long people have been living in Setenil is uncertain. There is certainly evidence of Roman occupation in the first century and the ruins of the castle, which stands alongside the 16th century Gothic church overlooking the town, are Moorish from the 12th century. There is a widely held view, however, that the caves could have been occupied from as long as 25,000 years ago, as evidence of cave dwellers has been found dating from this period at the Cueva de la Pileta, which is not too far away.

Out and About with Nick & Mo

The full name of Setenil de las Bodegas is said to have developed in the 15 th century, when the area had flourishing wineries ─ hence bodegas in the name. Largescale wine production finished when the crops were destroyed by an infestation in the 19th century and Setenil is today better known for its chorizo, pastries and local pork. Its bars and restaurants also enjoy a very good reputation and, having sampled a little of the local food, we can see why.

As interesting as they are, the cave buildings are only one part of Setenil and the majority of dwellings for the 3000 inhabitants are built in a maze of narrow, winding streets on either side of the river Trejo ─ some of them literally seeming to hang from the sides of the gorge. Like most Spanish villages the narrow, winding streets of Setenil are clearly not designed for motor traffic and quite how the locals manage to negotiate some of them with cars and lorries is amazing ─ particularly as some of them are two-way! On more than one occasion we had to press ourselves into the walls of houses as a local, clearly in training for the Spanish Grand Prix, whizzed past and, as in many places of similar size, many of the vehicles carried their ‘battle scars’ of dents and scrapes.

24

Thankfully, though, this was a rarity and on the whole, Setenil was a pleasant and relaxing place to walk ─ particularly away from the hustle and bustle of the market area. The people seemed very friendly and most smiled and spoke. The houses built into the mountainside were clearly less sophisticated than those on Calle Cuevas del Sol, where the owners took an obvious pride in their homes. These were immaculately presented, complete with small balconies and overflowing with flowering plants, but the mountain houses looked “right and more natural in this situation. There are a couple that have fallen into disrepair and you are able to see clearly how they were originally. We finished our circuit of the town by crossing the bridge and on this side of the river, the mountain was, if anything, even more over the top of you as you walked, making it much darker and, as we all said, a little claustrophobic. I guess that in mid-summer there would be more natural light. Although there were lots of interesting little shops, and the town is fascinating, we said there was no way we could have lived in that situation. Setenil is well worth a visit and is without doubt a very interesting place with a long and varied history. It is difficult to fully portray just how striking and unusual it is in an article like this; it really is somewhere you need to see for yourself. There is a You Tube video that will give you a reasonable idea of what the town is about, and other sites to give more information on the history etc. A friendly, pretty and awe-inspiring town, Setenil del Bodegas is a place you need to visit in order to see one of the most surprising locations in Andalucia. Healthy Living

Back pain is very painful, but often there is help… Yesterday a woman visited my treatment room. Her back was causing her severe pain. She was almost unable to move and had been sitting on the sofa for the last few days – but sitting is not a good thing to do! She did not know what to do to get relief. Back pain is an increasing problem in our society. The majority of people have it and could describe how it pain influences their daily life. Where to go with back pain ? First, we would go to the doctor but what normally happens is that he only gives us pain killers. These could cause drowsiness and when we stop taking them, the pain can be the same or even worse, because we have returned to moving in a bad way as we did before. What people fail to realise is that by learning good posture, we can reduce back pain without the need for painkillers. In this case, the best place to go would be a physiotherapist. My name is Julia Fadlallah. I am a German physiotherapist who has lived and worked in Antequera for five years. Every second client who comes to my treatment room suffers from back pain. Some of them come with a doctor’s diagnosis, such as sciatica, herniated(slipped)discs, lumbago, lumbalgia, scoliosis or arthritis in the spine. Let us look at the conditions and see where back pain comes from. It is mainly due to bad posture and lack of movement .Nowadays we are driving the car everywhere and sitting far too much. The spine is not built for sitting; it is built for standing and walking. Due to modern cosiness, not only older people are affected ─ more and more young people suffer from back pain. Let’s see why! Which postures are good for our spine and which ones should we avoid ? In between each vertebra in our spine we have an intervertebral disc which is like a cushion full of gel. At night, when we lie down, the intervertebral discs fill up and during the day, they lose liquid and height due to our standing or sitting postures. This is why we are 1-2 cm shorter in the evening than in the morning. On picture 1 you can see there are positions which provoke more pressure on the third lumbar vertebral disc than other positions

picture 1: Amount of pressure in kg on the third lumbar vertebra in different positions

28

Good postures are those which press less on our spine. When we need to carry weight, we should move dynamically and symmetrically. Have a look at pictures 2. On the left side, with the red cross, we see the bad postures and on the right are the recomended postures. Physiotherapist teach their patients the “spine school to show, explain and train us to perform the right movements.

Pictures 2 : Examples of good and bad postures

What do herniated disc, sciatica, lumbago, lumbalgia, scoliosis and arthritis in the spine mean ? What is a herniated (slipped) disc ? The inbalance of pressure in the spine can provoke degeneration in the intervertebal discs. This can lead to a herniated disc. The intervertebal disc is constructed from a nucleus filled with gel, around which is a fibrous ring which keeps the gel in its central position (see picture 3). Healthy Living

picture 3 : vertical section of a vertebra

29

Healthy Living

When the nucleus moves from its central position but stays in the fibrous ring, we call it protrusion. When the nucleus is pushed out of the fibrous ring we call it prolapes and this is the herniated disc (see picture 4). Both the protrusion and the prolapse can push on the nervous system alongside the spine. The protrusion can go back into its former position if we care for our spine, but if not, it can become a prolapse. The prolapse is not reversible and can result in the picture 4 > horizontal section of the vertebrae > herniated disc worst case scenario of paraplegia.

Every muscle and part of the skin is innerverted by its associated nerve. Many times the sciatic nerve, which originates from the spine higher lumbar 4/5, is affected. The symptoms from lumbar spine pain can be pins and needles or a sleepy feeling in the legs down to the big toe. picture 5 > sciatic nerve

What is lumbago ? It is a muscle inflammation due to inappropriate movement and provokes muscle pain in this area. If you do not cure the tight muscles, it can lead to pressure on the nervous system. Then it is called Lumbalgia. What is arthritis in the spine? This means a degeneration in the small vertebrae joints. Degeneration leads to inflammation in the surrounding areas, which provokes pain. What is a scoliosis ? A scoliosis is an asymmetric spine due to asymmetry in the bones. People often have a scoliosis from birth. If it is a less severe scoliosis, people can compensate very well and do not know that they have one until they feel pain. A scoliosis can also appear after an operation. For example, after a hip operation, one leg can be 2cm longer than the other and therefore provokes an asymmetric spine. picture 6 > scoliosis

30

What to do with back pain ? Due to the complex system of the spine there are many reasons for back pain. The most important thing is to go to a professional and get a clear diagnosis. A short resume of the reasons for back pain : 

daily stress and bad postures (eg because of long periods sitting in unsuitable furniture)

genetic disposition (eg arthritis in the family)

asymmetric bone position (eg scoliosis after an operation)

lack of movement (eg because of driving everywhere )

lack of muscle strength (eg because of not exercising )

over-weight person (eg extreme pressure on the spine )

excessive sport (eg degeneration from extreme use)

degeneration of the spine (eg age)

Everyone has his or her individual situation. If you have pain, you can have a physiotherapy check-up and together we can find out where it comes from and what your individual rehabilitation programme should be. The rehabilitation programme includes physiotherapy, adequate exercise, learning adequate postures and movements to protect the spine (“spine school”), possibly weight loss and/or adequate shoes. By protecting our spine, we can hopefully avoid the need for an operation. Rehabilitaion and prevention are most important in order to keep healthy and free from back pain. I hope this article has helped to make back pain easier to understand. Come and see me if you have any further questions. You are welcome to call me or visit my treatment room in Antequera. Julia

Semana Santa While families in the UK are busy scouring supermarket shelves for chocolate Easter eggs, a whole different culture is at work in Spain where Semana Santa (Holy Week) counts down the final days of Lent. That week before Easter is celebrated with a passion throughout Spain but arguably with no greater fervour than here in Andalucia. In the major cities, Semana Santa witnesses huge, heavy wooden floats (pasos), typically borne on the sturdy shoulders of many strong young men, slowly swaying and wending their way through the streets, accompanied by stirring, raucous brass bands and rhythmic snare drums. Smaller towns all have their individual processions but there are two towns here in inland Andalucia where the spectacle is quite unique. In Puente Genil, Semana Santa is known as Mananta, recognised as unique and one of the most important religious displays in Andalucia. This annual tradition is hundreds of years old, passed down through many generations of the same families and described best as a festival of participation ─ the Mananta being a ‘party of the people’. To watch and respect is perhaps easier than to fully understand this outpouring of faith and passion, the popular feelings represented by the Mananta. Some say that to comprehend the various levels and the intrinsic values of the Mantana could take a lifetime. As a spectacle, it has no parallels. This is a most visual and audible treat, playing on the senses of the visitor. At times you feel swept along with the enthusiasm and fervour, and at other, more serious moments you feel you are intruding whilst also being privileged to be drinking in the occasion. At times there seems to be disorder and contradiction, then suddenly there is order and cohesion. That’s just part and parcel of Mantana’s ancient appeal and mystery.

34

Throughout Puente Genil are some 60 Brotherhoods or Corporaciones, based on and named after Biblical stories and characters. Each plays a part in at least one of the days in Holy Week and the processions which weave their way through the often steep and narrow cobbled streets of the older part of town. The events progress day by day and night by night, telling and recreating the Biblical stories which conclude on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. If you could stay awake for every hour during Mananta, and be standing on every ancient street corner, you might still miss something. Much goes on well after midnight ─ drums and trumpets included. Highlights for me include the re-enactment just before dawn on Good Friday of the Roman soldiers (Romano) coming to take Christ to his trial, and later that morning, the re-enactment of the trial with Pontius Pilot washing his hands after condemning Christ to die on the cross. The colourful and more joyful conclusion comes on Easter Sunday when all the masked Biblical characters proceed through the main streets, accompanied by the resplendent Roman soldiers and musicians in their gleaming uniforms. Apart from commemorating the passion, death and resurrection of Christ, the Mananta provides the visitor to Puente Genil with a week-long cultural and historic series of events that remain unforgettable from one year to the next. Elsewhere, an annual event after midnight in Estepa is also one not to be missed. As Holy Wednesday becomes Maundy Thursday, all the street lights are turned off, as shadowy figures start to assemble in the higher streets of the town. Some 200 penitents, dressed in black from their ankles to the tips of their pointed hoods, line either side of the street, each carrying an oil lantern. What makes this procession rather special and somewhat eerie is that it is held in total silence, save for occasional mournful notes from a bass clarinet and a series of rattles or clappers that start and stop the numerous rest breaks. This is a one-way procession and every step is a step uphill towards the ancient castle and monastery high above Estepa. It’s normal for the procession not to arrive at the monastery until after 2am. Jerez F1 Testing 2014 Clive Smith Each year we go to Jerez to see the preseason practice for the Formula 1 cars, but this year was a special one as the cars have undergone a complete change. The rules have seen some big changes this year. Last year’s cars were V8 1900cc engines, but this year they are V6 1600cc. There is also a total weight limit and the KERs (which gives a boost of power) has been replaced with a new system. The testing was over four days. We normally go the second and third days as it gives us a chance to see all the drivers. We try to get there about 10am; practice sessions start at 9am. The cost of the normal stands is just 10euros ─ it costs more to go into the pit lane stands, but I think you see less.

A few days before going I remembered to buy some more earplugs, as we are only about 30-40m from the track as the cars roar by. I found the new engines really disappointing. I did not need the earplugs ─ in fact a Spanish spectator stood up midafternoon and offered to sell his ear defenders "cheap" and just got laughed at. I thought the cars sounded like noisy mopeds. Some of the cars turned out to be very unreliable and we had several red flag stops when they broke down on the circuit ─ including Alonso’s, but that did give his fans a great view of him. Alonso was there on our second day, when a party of about 100 10-year-old local schoolchildren turned up, complete with “Alonso” painted on their faces; they went mad when he drove past. They stayed for about two hours and seemed to have a great time. Three children stayed behind with their teacher and picked up all the rubbish they had dropped. How much you saw of the cars depended on how reliable the cars were ─ Vettel for Red Bull only managed 11 laps and Kevin Magnussen for McLaren did 162 laps. We look forward to the new season’s racing.

Fiestas de Princesas

Articles On 8th February, Asociación Girasol celebrated its 2nd Gala in Fuente de Piedra, to raise funds for people with advanced non-curable illnessess, their family and carers in the towns of: Alameda, Fuente de Piedra, Humilladero and Mollina….and a wonderful time was had by all. Volunteers, members, friends and supporters from all four villages came together and gave their time, talent, and money to benefit the cause, and raised more than a magnificent €1.000. The Acts: singers, dancers and musicians were of such a high standard that Simon Cowell should consider signing up a few. AG cannot thank everyone enough. It is no mean feat to organise such an event. Fundraising is vitally important to us, but the community spirit, where people come together in a common cause to help others, is what really matters. AG´s case load is ever increasing. We can all offer something. All you need is time – no matter how much or how little, goodwill and interest. There are many ways in which you can help, not only in patients´ homes, but also admin, transport, a Saydo stall, organising events etc. If you want to help, become part of a team and make a difference, please contact us:info@asociaciongirasol.com

Chocolate By Ella Durham The rusted school gates clanged shut behind Denny and Mitch as they ambled out into the street. Their shoulder rucksacks were slung even lower than their trendy ‘how do you like my knickers’ trousers. They turned round just in time to see the ‘H’ from the Harsefield Comprehensive School name plate drop to the ground. It was left to read ‘Arsefield’. The boys looked at each other and laughed. “That’s ‘bout right!” giggled Denny, and Mitch nodded. They dawdled along in no particular hurry. Seventeen-year-old youths from Harsefield Comprehensive never seemed to hurry anywhere, unless it was to rush into a scrap with those stuck-up Hooray Henries from the private school on Lighthouse Lane. There were posh Henriettas too, of course, but the boys didn’t seem to mind those. Denny kicked an empty cola tin as it lay in his path. The tin shot across the street and knocked an ornamental garden gnome off its garden wall. It crashed to the ground, dead. “Goal” he cried, throwing his arms aloft. An old lady looked out from behind the curtains and shook her fist at the boys. Denny gave her the finger in return. The curtain quickly fell back into place. Mitch frowned. “Hey, man, what did you do that for? What will people think of us if they see you vandalising stuff around here?” Denny just shrugged. “You’re always worrying about what people think of you. You are too self conscious, that’s your trouble. You should do something crazy for once, make a statement!” he scoffed. Mitch frowned. He wasn’t a natural show-off like his friend. They walked on towards the bus stop. Suddenly, Denny grabbed Mitch’s arm. “Look, there’s one of those Henriettas, Katy Jennings. Studies drama and loves all those fancy plays like Anthony and Cleopatra and all that ‘Romeo, Romeo wherefor art thou’ rubbish!” He looked to the skies with his hand on his heart. “You fancy her, doncha?” he teased. Mitch pursed his lips. “Yeah, but she’s way out of my league. I tried chatting her up last Saturday at the bowling alley. Oh, she was friendly enough but I could tell she wasn’t interested in who was playing in the FA Cup final this year. Said that she liked crazy comedies and cartoon films, though, so at least we have something in common. Still, what have I got to offer her? I saw her out in town last week hanging off the arm of a Hooray. Looked a proper chinless twit, he did! Bet he’s loaded and drives around the South of France in his daddy’s Porsche. Me? I work part time in a charity shop, don’t even own a bike and the farthest I’ve been on holiday is Rhyll! Nah, I’ve got nothing she’d want. I’d just better forget it.” He watched wistfully as Katy Jennings boarded the bus with her friends. Her blonde hair flowed out behind her as the wind caught it, her smile as warm and bright as summer sunshine. The girls were laughing as if sharing some girly joke. He just wished he could make her like him. Then an idea struck him. He punched Denny’s shoulder. “Goddit! Do something crazy, you said. Well, all girls like chocolate, right?” Denny nodded slowly. 42

“I think I have a way to get Katy Jennings to want to be my girl. It’s coming up to Easter. I’ll get her a big chocolate egg.” Mitch beamed. “Not very original, mate.” Denny looked doubtful. “Maybe, but I have a plan. She’ll love it... and hopefully, me!!”

Stories

It was a tight fit and the insides smelled funny but Mitch was determined to go through with it. After all, to hire this costume had cost him thirty quid of his computer games fund and he felt a proper idiot when he looked in the mirror, but if it did the trick it would be worth every penny. He just hoped that Katy liked chocolate eggs. Denny picked him up in his dad’s white van. It took him ten minutes to stop laughing when he saw Mitch’s outfit. “I know I said do something crazy, but this??” He howled with laughter again while Mitch struggled to get into the van. They drove off towards Lightfoot Lane. “Over there, Denny, park up behind those trees. I’ll wait there till she comes out of school. Just help me out of the van.” Denny pulled up behind the trees. Mitch gathered up his costume and backed out of the van door and shuffled behind a large oak. A few minutes later, Katy emerged from the school gates, head down, looking at a book and not where she was going. She walked straight towards the tree. Mitch seized the moment and jumped out.

“Neigh, neigh and thrice neigh, my lady!” he whinnied. “I bring you a gift of sweet pleasure. It is made from milk ─ not mine I make haste to add, but it is of such gooeyness that I fear you may need a ride home. Pray do not refuse it or I will feel a terrible ass!” Katy stopped dead in her tracks, shocked at the sight of a pantomime donkey standing on its hind legs, holding out a large Easter egg wrapped in gold foil and ribbons. Her eyes stared, her mouth gaped open and absently, she held out her hand and took the egg. “D...D...Donkey? Like from Shrek?” “At your service.” He circled round “Like Eddy Murphy?” Mitch whipped off his costume head and moved forward, grinning. “Oh, it’s you... from the bowling alley. You look...um...amazing. But all this for me? Why?” She could hardly contain her laughter. “I learned that you liked Cleopatra and I know that she bathed in asses’ milk. When you told me that you liked cartoon films and crazy comedies, well, I put the two together in the hope you’d see me in a different way to last week. I just wanted you to know how I felt about you. So...?” he asked, nervously. “It’s certainly different and I think you’re crazy, but in a good way. I really like that. I told my brother in town last week that I’d met a really nice guy at the bowling alley and I’d hoped to see him again. I just didn’t imagine it would be like this!” She beamed that sunshine smile. Duh! Her brother!!!!! “Well, can I take you home, maybe more than once?” he asked, swishing his donkey’s tail teasingly. Katy roared with laughter. “I’d love that but you must tell me how you knew this is my favourite chocolate?” she added, falling into step along him. “Neigh, neigh, neigh,” was all he replied.
