Inland Solutions Magazine - April/May AbrĂl/Mayo 2015 -

Introduction

Here we are in April already with spring around the corner & summer on the horizon. The weather and work situations in the last 2 months have been very unpredictable; more and more ex-pats leaving Spain to go back to the UK is also a worrying development. The towns and villages have been very quiet but hopefully the warmer weather will improve the overall conditions from now on. Looking forward, we have Easter celebrations to come, the Elections and no doubt the Ferias will be starting soon after that. Holiday makers will hopefully start visiting this area again and businesses will flourish once more. I have had mixed reactions regarding the new look magazine, the main one being that it´s too big to pop in a handbag! Well not one to disappoint the ladies, I am considering another change to the magazine and won´t stop trying until we get it right, so watch this space because you never know what “Inland Solutions” will come up with next. On that note, I hope you will enjoy this issue and please send me any information from your area that you think our readers would like to know about. Chat soon,

Tell the Doctor … (How to communicate with the Spanish doctor ...) An ENGLISH - SPANISH phrase book with words and phrases to help you communicate on medical matters and with useful information on using the Spanish health and social services. "Tell the Doctor" was originally compiled to help doctors in Orba (Alicante) communicate with their non-Spanish speaking patients. From these small beginnings, it is now used all over Spain. It now also contains information to help you use the various services that are available to those who live or come on holiday here. The phrases contained in this book are to help you tell your doctor what your problem is and to then be able to understand what his diagnosis and treatment are. The book is divided up into sections that tell the doctor something about you and your condition, and other sections that the doctor can use to tell you about his diagnosis and treatment. If you cannot speak Spanish well, or maybe not at all, you can just point to an appropriate phrase. Or the doctor can point to a phrase and then you indicate if it is true or false (nod or shake your head). If there are alternatives (printed in italics), point to the word or phrase that applies to you. On pages 94-95 there is a very useful personal information checklist form. It´s a good idea to make photocopies of these pages for each member of your household. Keep them up-dated regularly and where they can be found easily, maybe with your other medical documents. Keep a copy in your car as well. If you take a number of drugs it is also very useful to keep a list of these and the times of day you take them. Take this information with you to the doctor or hospital whenever necessary but especially on a first visit. If you have had treatment in another country, please ask your doctor there for a medical report and get it translated into Spanish before you see a doctor here.

The SPANISH NHS CARD (Tarjeta Médica, a.k.a. Tarjeta SIP) Every Autonomous Region in Spain has its public Health Service ( Servicio de Salud )] and all EU citizens who live here permanently and who are registered with the INSS are entitled to obtain their NHS Card and use it anywhere in Spain. However, non-pensioners who are not working will have to take out private insurance, unless they are covered by an E106 (see below). Each applicant must first register on the padrón in his local municipality and obtain a certificado de empadronamiento, and have his Foreigner's Identification Number ( N.I.E. ) or Certificado de Residencia. He also needs to provide proof that he is entitled to health care in his country of origin, with a valid EHIC and E106, or an E121 if he is a State Pensioner, so that the cost of his care can be recouped from that country. He will also need to show his passport and will need photocopies of everything. Take these documents to the INSS in the nearest main town to register ( hours 0900-1400 ) [see the phone book under "Instituto Nacional de Seguridad Social" for the address]. They will usually process your application immediately and give you your NHS Card with your Spanish Social Security number on it. Take it to your local Centro de Salud, where you will be allocated to a local doctor. Tell the Doctor is a new book that no ex pats home should be without. It includes information regarding all aspects of Hospital and Clinic visits, at the chemist, social services, repatriation, when someone dies, lists of illnesses and a whole lot more important information. Be sure to order your copy as soon as possible: At Diane´s Hair & Beauty Studio, Fuente de Piedra Tel: 659991743

Citizens Advice Bureau Spain

Sixty Detained in Timeshare Fraud Affecting British Pensioners in Malaga Region According to the national police, sixty members of a criminal network who preyed on retired British expatriates have been arrested. Using a telesales team these crooks offered to purchase timeshares at very attractive prices. The owners of these properties would have to pay a sum to proceed with the sale. The British victims rumoured to be around 500 and who were defrauded of amounts between 300 to 50,000 euros have not as yet come forward. The gang, not content at having taking huge amounts of cash from the victims, dismantled the operation and called the pensioners again, this time posing as a group of lawyers offering their services to bring the criminals to justice and to recoup the losses incurred. In this way extracting even more money from the victims in the process. The final phrase of this fraud was to call the clients to say that the lawyers (impostors) had obtained a satisfactory result in the courts. Now the affected just had to make a final payment to recoup their funds. The mainly British criminal gang who have been carrying out these operations since 2009 are thought to have made illicit gains of over 30,000,000 euros. In the police swoop, over a million euros in assets have been confiscated. This is not an original swindle so please, if anyone receives calls from a telesales team with attractive offers for your property or if you are told that there is already a buyer in place, make searches of the company, where they are located and if registered as a business. Never sign a contract until proven as legal by a reputable solicitor. For anyone who believes they may have been tricked by this criminal network, please contact us. myra@citizensadvice.org.es or if you prefer to speak with one of our reputable lawyers

F. SCHATZ Premium Wines By Carmen Aparicio, Professional wine taster by ESH Seville aparicio.carmen64@gmail.com WINE OF THE MONTH PETIT VERDOT 2008 Winery: F. SCHATZ Variety: Petit Verdot is a variety introduced in Ronda by oenologist Juan Manuel Vetas. It is a late ripening grape, red, intense in colour, very aromatic, resulting in very complex wines. It usually is the crown jewel of many wineries. Ageing: 15 months in French oak barrel, on its own fine lees with battonages every 2 to 6 months. It is a high cape wine, dark violet in colour. Scents from dry aromatic plants like laurel, thyme, rosemary, eucalyptus, are intense and clear in the nose. Dark chocolate notes can be discovered in the mouth, it is very mineral and its tannins are strong but with a correct and fresh acidity. Pairing: To have with starters, it pairs perfectly with fatty cheeses like Gorgonzola, any dish made up with this cheese is ideal. To pair it with main courses, pig fat meats are the most appropriate ones for the wine-food marriage to be superb. Bon Appétit. Sold at Carmen Aparicio (Antequera, Spain), tel. 639 620 555 This life is full of marvellous people teaching you everything they know and teaching it with all the passion with which they learnt it. Finca La Sanguijuela is hidden among unpaved roads surrounded by vineyards. When you feel you are lost, an iron gate appears between the trees, showing a welcome board to Friedrich Schatz’s home. Friedrich is a true Málaga man from Germany. When he speaks, you end up not knowing if Friedrich comes from one place or the other. His wines are organic and, furthermore, biodynamic. In the Schatz family there have been winemakers since the Seventeenth century. At the age of eighteen years old, Friedrich packed up and left with all his heritage to look for what he called the paradise. He fell in love with Ronda, its climate, the land and the people. Finca Sanguijuela y Friedrich Schatz

matched, that was a big coincidence and he decided to stay. Ronda lost all its vineyards after the phylloxera and there were no wineries remaining. Friedrich’s great efforts got the people to believe again in their lands and in Ronda’s potential. Now, after thirty years, it is again a land rich in wines with twenty-three wineries proving it. One of these wineries is Friedrich Schatz’s. The first thing you see and feel when you enter his home is a microclimate made up of aromatic herbs, plants and shrubs, their names never heard before. Federico guides us through that garden that wreathes us with unknown fragrances. He tells us that all those aromatic herbs play a very important role in the Finca and in the vineyard, keeping away any insect that may harm the vines. After a little walk we find part of the vineyard. To step on the ground is to step on a mantle of natural composting waste, created during years with falling leaves and the remains of pruning that became part of the ground to turn into a component of the vine that rendered them. Those aromatic plants are again at the beginning of each row of grapevine. Friedrich explains to us the particularity of each of the varieties grown. You can tell a proud glint in his eyes when he looks at the result of so many years of work. Hens and cocks join us during the walk, it is like living in another world. We enter the winery. The tanks are waiting for us, the manual press, the casks and the sleeping bottles, waiting to be ready for tasting. All the work in this winery is manual. No pesticide, fertilizer, nothing artificial is used, thus certifying it as ecological. This winery is the only biodynamic one in the entire province and maybe in all Andalusia. Biodynamic agriculture is based on creating for each discrete situation, a unique agro-eco system called agricultural organism. This grows full of its own strength and health as it becomes a complete agricultural individuality. It is not only about working with the

forces in the earth’s inside but considering the power of the cosmos, i.e. the influences from the solar rhythms, the moons, the zodiacal constellations and the planets of our solar system. The best way to understand biodinamics’ results is to drink the wines created by these lands. Made with the very same grape variety, Schatz offers a stunning Chardonnay white, very fruity and aromatic, with a strong mineral taste in the mouth. A rosé elaborated with Muskattrolinger grape, aged during five months in French oak barrels on its own lees with daily battonage. A red wine Finca Sanguijuela with a coupage of Tempranillo, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Souvignon, ageing during fifteen months in French and American oak barrels on its own lees, daily battonage. Red berries like blackcurrant can be readily identified in the nose, the wood bringing in notes of vanilla and cocoa, powerful in mouth. Acinipo is a red one owing its name to the Roman ruins of Ronda la Vieja, a few kilometres away from the vineyard. Lemberger grapes produce a cherry and blueberries wine in the nose, very silky in the mouth, twelve months ageing in Slovenian and French oak barrels. His Pinot Noir, ageing during fifteen months in French oak barrels and battonage during two to six months, makes an aromatic wine with strawberry, raspberry and cocoa scents, even mint easy to identify. Its tannins are elegant in mouth, correct, high enveloping taste with a long aftertaste. We stand before some unique, complex wines, not only to be drank but to be tasted … they are like that candy we love so, so much that we keep it for a very special occasion, thinking that we will not chew it but leave it to melt slowly in the mouth. It is a wine we will have in the nose, trying to recognize all its nuances and in the mouth all its flavours, always looking for a memory of life to match those aromas.

The weather was lovely on Sunday 8th August, ideal for the first car-boot sale to be held in La Plaza de la Constitution, Fuente de Piedra. The sale of second-hand donated items at Saydo´s Wednesday Market is the only consistent form of fundraising that Asociación Girasol organizes, and with the Saydo monthly car-boot sale being recently discontinued, AG´s fundraisers organized the event with the cooperation of Fuente de Piedra Town Hall. There were 9 stalls in total, not only selling second-hand items but also handicrafts - a marvellous turnout. The Plaza was brought alive by customers who appeared from about 8.30 onwards. The car-boot will be held on the second Sunday of the month, and if you would like to reserve a pitch (€5), please contact Hilary on amigosdegirasol@gmail.com. Half of the cost of the pitch is donated to Fuente de Piedra Junior School, the other half goes towards helping to improve the life of people with advanced, incurable illnesses, their families and carers.

The Cypriot based Company run by Andy Carrington and Martin Haigh has seen some big changes in the last few years. “We've practically re invented the wheel” says Andy and Martin; “It was no easy feat in the early days having gone back to the drawing board on various occasions. It would have been easier to have used an outside source for the original product but knowing we were going to encounter problems such as borders coming unstuck we decided to manufacture our own product by using extreme testing and yes during the early stages we did come across some very tough hurdles.”

Shark Force has been specially developed to cope with the extremities of living in an interchanging environment and is produced in our British

That was the game that was… The year was 1891 and a match between Burnley and Blackburn Rovers was to go down in history as one of the only times a team has been reduced to one man and the game continued when he had to face the opposition alone. That man was Herbert (Herby) Arthur the Rovers keeper. Arthur was born in Blackburn on 14th February 1863 and joined Rovers at the age of seventeen in 1880. It was a freezing winter’s day in 1891 that history was made. Snow was falling heavily and no one could really have felt much like playing a game of football in the bitter cold. Certainly the Blackburn players didn’t feel much like it but being the men that they were they got changed, left the Pavilion and entered the fray with their local rivals Burnley. Conceding three goals in the first 25 minutes didn’t help raise their spirits either let alone their temperatures. Not surprisingly they were not happy and it became a rather tetchy, niggly sort of game. Two players in particular took a dislike to one another, Alexander Stewart of Burnley and Joseph Lofthouse of Rovers. They scuffled and fought with each other (perhaps just to keep themselves warm) during the first half but the referee the infamous JC Clegg allowed them to continue in the game. As half time arrived it seems that most of the players were happy just to get into the pavilion and warm up a little bit. After the 10 minute interval had come and gone Burnley returned to the field but there was no sign of the Rovers players. The referee Clegg from Sheffield was a high ranking FA Official and not a man to stand much nonsense and probably didn’t take too kindly to waiting in the cold. He warned both teams that he would restart the match in two minutes time and if the Rovers players were not on the pitch he would

award the game to Burnley. Consequently he actually allowed four minutes and a straggle of Rovers players appeared. Not all of the team but more than the requisite six needed for the game to restart. Clegg, being a man to follow rules then blew for the second half to begin. Tempers though soon rose once more in the fierce cold and the two feuding players from the first half Lofthouse and Stewart once more came to blows. Clegg felt he had no option but to send them both off. What happened next though was extra-ordinary. The Rovers players felt that the treatment of Lofthouse was unfair and they all followed him off the field and refused to return. All that is except for goal keeper Herby Arthur. He was made of sterner stuff. The referee was aware that he had done the correct thing and had no option (under the rules of the day) but to blow the whistle for the game to restart. It was Herby against Burnley’s ten remaining players. Arthur was an England international and approaching the end of his career but not even he could hope to continue for long. He was though a clever sort of bloke and when the Burnley players bore down on him he appealed for offside which given that he was on his own referee Clegg had no option but to give each time. In all Arthur's games for Rovers this must have been his biggest test. He tried to waste as much time as possible, dallying on the ball at every opportunity and a farce ensued. With Arthur eventually refusing to kick the ball quickly enough for a free kick the referee eventually had no option but to abandon the match and report the day’s events to the FA. Blackburn Rovers apologised later on saying that their players were just so numb with cold they couldn’t play properly or possibly have continued. Two days later Arthur was given a benefit match against Sunderland in recognition of his efforts. He died in 1930 aged 67 and has gone down in footballing history as the only player to face a team all on his own and manage to outwit them all. Good old Herby.

Gauro’s Luna Mora festival

As darkness fell 20,000 tea-lights were lit both sides of the narrow winding streets. On a flight of steps, candles had been arranged in the shape of the signs of the zodiac; one sign on each step. A team of young people armed with lighters constantly patrolled the streets ready to relight any candles that had gone out. Market stalls lining the long main street offered a range of craft items such as dates covered in marzipan and chocolate, foam puppets, soap, wooden toys, jewellery and cakes. You could have your name written in Arabic or your hands decorated in henna. Another street was devoted to food stalls, ranging from Moroccan fare to curry and pizzas. Every September the white village of Gauro, 6 km from Coin, holds its popular Luna Mora (Moorish Moon) festival. A modern creation, first held in 1996, the festival celebrates the Moorish history of the village when Christians, Moors and Jews lived side-by-side. Gauro has no more claim to a Moorish past than any other white village in Andalucia and unlike neighbouring Monda (3 km) it

does not even boast a mediaeval castle. It has no clearly demarcated Christian, Moorish and Jewish quarters like the cities of Jaen and Cordoba. Situated on the edge of the Sierra de las Nievas national park, a Unesco Biosphere Reserve, Gauro is a popular centre for park users. In such an environmentally conscious location it is perhaps no coincidence that the children’s roundabout at the festival was pedal-powered. As the night wore on the crowds became more intense and movement through the streets changed from leisurely to interminably slow. Good news for stallholders as the eyes of potential customers, forced to linger longer, might alight on just the very thing as they ambled past. Street entertainers played music of Christian, Moorish or Jewish origin. In the church, a concert of jazz-flamenco fusion did not seem to please aficionados of either genre. This small town of just over 2,000 people has a purpose-built auditorium with seating for 1800 people.

Vast numbers of visitors on a hot summer evening inevitably means a lot of dish-washing, toilet-flushing and hand-washing, placing heavy demands on the water supply. But in this village supplies were already stretched. At the beginning of August drought had forced the town council to turn off the water between 11.00 p.m. and 7.30 a.m. By the end of the month they were trying to find alternative sources. In the town square, above the heads of festival goers, someone had hung a sign asking the mayor what was happening about the water supplies. I wonder how many people noticed. When we left, before midnight, the streets were heaving. The carpark, covering a hillside some distance away, was full and on the road, the headlights from cars bringing more visitors stretched all the way back to Coin. A lot of money was going to be made in Gauro that night and it was only the beginning; they were going to do it all again the following weekend. Jenny Whiteley

Cuentos

“¿No tienes hermanos?” “No. ¿Y tú?.” “Yo, tampoco.”

- No te entiendo, Harry...

Solo yo puedo. - ¿A quién, Harry? ¿A quién no puedo ver? Continuará... Paco Sánchez Arjona.

Harry´s secret Harry´s twelfth birthday party had just finished. Every one of his friends had left, and not a soul was left in the spacious game room, only him… and Joanne. They stared at each other, in silence, not knowing what to say. Her, because every time they were alone it was harder and harder to talk to him. And him, because he was thinking about his secret. The party had been fun. Harry, his friends and Joanne had just spent hours playing video games, watching videos from their favourite “youtubers”, laughing silly at every single thing…The afternoon had gone quite fast for everybody… except for the two of them. For Harry, because he was awaiting the time to go down to the lake, and for Joanne, because she was expecting him to ask her to join him… for the first time. Harry had been born in that city and had always lived in that neighbourhood and in that same house. Joanne, however, had moved there only just seven months ago, right on time to begin the first course at the Institute. Harry was somewhat timid, a good student, and had half a dozen friends and a German shepherd whom he played with during the afternoons… but he was missing the most important thing. Joanne had only a couple of friends in her new life, good grades, a red haired Irish setter and a somewhat melancholic grin. The new neighbours took no more than a few weeks to become friends. But it wasn´t only the neighbourhood that brought them together, the fact they both owned dogs and that they played alone on their yards - well, not alone, their dogs were always there - made that relationship easy going, but neither of them were able to define it consistently. “Don´t you have any siblings?” - she asked him one afternoon, while the dogs sniffed each other. “No. Do you?.” “Me neither.” “And your parents, are they never home?” - Harry asked her-. “My parents work until very late in their office, in that lonely attic room” - said Joanne looking up to the lit window. “How about your parents?” “I only have a father” Harry replied. “I am sorry. What happened?”

“Harry thought Joanne was the closest thing to a real friend, the kind of friend a boy can tell about missing his mother...” talk about. He thought he would like to have a friend, but not any kind of friend, a special one. Someone he could talk about all those things boys never want to talk about. And she thought Harry was the closest thing to the friend she never had because of all those unexpected, continuous movings from house to house. Harry casted a sideways glance towards Joanne, and she smiled. Joanne thought he was thinking of asking her to go with him to the lake, Harry thought Joanne was the closest thing to a real friend, the kind of friend a boy can tell about missing his mother, the kind of friend he can tell about crying every night when he remembers her, and the fact that he goes alone to the lake to keep his secret safe…. or maybe because he has no one to share it with. No, she will laugh about me, Harry thinks every time he tries to gather the courage to tell any of his friends. Joanne looked at Harry and he felt he did not want to go down to the lake by himself anymore. But Harry did not say a thing. Maybe because he was not sure how to ask her to join him, maybe because he was not sure he wanted to share his secret. Finally, Joanne broke the silence. She told him it was time to go out to the yard with their dogs, that they would enjoy a little bit of time to run around. Harry thought of proposing walking the dogs around the neighbourhood, but ended up making her a proposal that made him feel immediately insecure. “Would you go to the lake with me?” - he asked her. “Sure!” she answered, trying to hide her excitement, and feeling her heart beating all the way down from her chest and up to her throat. A while later, the boy that just turned twelve, the girl that had been wondering for months why he went down to the lake by himself every afternoon, a German Shepherd and an Irish Settler walked down the road. Ten minutes later, Harry and Joanne were sitting at the corner of the lake, silently; he kept looking at a fixed spot in the water right in front of them; she wondered why Harry smiled in that particular way, a smile that even his eyes showed, him precisely, who did not appear to know how to smile. - Can you see her? - he asked her while he stared at the water.

“My mom had an accident…” - I don´t understand you, Harry… “Do you miss her a lot?” -I know, you can´t see her. Only I can. Harry nodded and then looked in the direction of the lake, answering her question. From that afternoon on, they became inseparable, but they never spoke again about their parents.

To be continued… Paco Sánchez Arjona Stories

That afternoon, a while after everybody left, Harry and Joanne were still in the room, without knowing what to

Recipe

Crazy Cake In A Mug (adapted from Wish I could Cook,

Ingredients  5 Tablespoons flour (all-purpose)  4 1/2 Tablespoon sugar  2 teaspoons cocoa (unsweetened)  1/4 teaspoon baking soda  Dash of salt

   

1/2 teaspoon white vinegar 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 teaspoons vegetable oil (or canola) 4 1/2 Tablespoons water

Directions Using a large microwave safe mug, spray the inside with non-stick cooking spray. Next, mix the first 5 dry ingredients in the mug. After mixing well, make 3 depressions in dry ingredients. Pour vinegar in one depression, vanilla in the other and the vegetable oil in third depression. Pour water over top. Mix well until smooth using a fork. Place in microwave and cook on high for *2 minutes, uncovered. Check with toothpick to make sure it comes out clean. Be sure not to over cook! Top with whatever you like - powdered sugar, frosting, chocolate chips, caramel or whipped cream! Enjoy hot or cold! TIPS  Each microwave cooks differently, adjust time accordingly! One person made the cake in 1 minute 40 seconds, and another in 1 minute 20 seconds. If you overcook the cake, it may ruin it. Be sure to watch as it bakes.  If you want a neater mug cake, mix the cake batter in a small bowl, then pour the batter in the mug.  You can add mini chocolate chips to the batter for a super rich chocolate cake...or do what I did, throw some on top after you make it, while it's still warm! Mmm, mmm good! 28 - Inland Solutions Magazine - April/May Abríl/Mayo 2015

Take lemons, for example. Just because they've gone bad, doesn't mean that they've completely gone to waste. Ants, roaches, and fleas actually hate the smell of lemons.

So, if you've got a pest problem, just place small slices of lemon peel on windowsills, in doorways, and near any cracks or holes. The scent is enough to drive those critters away.

Lemons can also be used to remove mineral deposits that build up in your tea kettle. All you have to do is fill it up with water, add a handful of thin lemon-peel slices and bring to a boil. Afterwards, let it sit for an hour, drain and rinse, and your kettle will be as good as new.

Lastly, lemons are excellent stain removers. Just rub half a lemon on the stain and allow the garment to sit overnight.
