St Georges Day - Fuente de Piedra At the invitation of the Town Hall, Fuente de Piedra Asociación Girasol was invited to organize an event to celebrate St George´s Day on 23rd April as part of Cultural Week. What gastronomic delight is typically English…well TEA of course. And so the British community and Girasol supporters got busy making cakes: brownies, sponges, fairy, crispy, chocolate, jam, you name it….Mary Berry would have been proud of the GREAT ENGLISH bake-off in Fuente de Piedra. It was a lovely, sunny afternoon and over 80 people enjoyed not only the wonderful cakes, but also a cup of ROSIE LEE….English Breakfast, Earl Grey…. A big thank you goes to Irene, chief organizer. We were happy to celebrate our patron saint´s day with our friends and neighbours in Fuente de Piedra, and we can´t wait until our community comes together on another occasion.

Stories
The Empty Seat Over There By Ella Durham We stand crammed on the underground’s platform like cowardly lemmings, wanting desperately to move closer to the edge but terrified of stepping out too soon -- that is until one makes the first move and then we’ll all charge forward. Rush hour: a twice daily ritual which brings a surge of bodies up against the thin innards of a Tube’s carriage. I battle for my six inches of space and seize the ground before another lemming invades it, ready for the half hour crush until I am spewed out with other lemmings onto an identical platform. I push back against the throng. Hot, sweaty, airless tunnel. Wish I’d not worn this woollen dress and coat this morning. Pungent odours pervade my senses. Early whiffs of Dior mingled with refresher mints, unwashed underarms, breakfasts in a bun, Starbucks dregs and tangs of cedar wood aftershave. Feeling queasy already. Shooting glances at the moving destination screen above our heads. Two minutes, one minute, ‘the next train is for....’ A thunder roar builds to a crescendo. It pierces my eardrums. Whoooooosh! The electric torpedo hurtles out of the darkness. Its brakes squeal to a stop. Phwoosh! Sliding doors gape open, ready to gobble us all up. Pushing, thrusting, jabbing a way on board, we hurry forward into the already full carriage. We jam into the receding space, oxygen at a premium. “Doors Closing!” Phwoosh. Balancing, clutching poles and straps like zoo-kept monkeys, we brace ourselves. The train moves off. Faster, Faster, Faster! Human souls touching but not wanting to be touched, staring into anywhere. No eye contact – too dangerous, intimidating. 6
Would a “Good morning” kill us? Are we really so isolated? Nobody says it anyway. My eyes scan the dreary pictures begging me to buy more insurance or upgrade my phone or seek help for my addictions. I sigh. There is no hope. Then, suddenly I see it! Do my eyes deceive me? There’s an empty seat over there. I’m stuck at the back of the scrum near the rear door. I look round hoping, praying no-one else has spotted it. A young man -- low slung jeans, hoodie, unfastened trainers -- leans back on a support pole, headphones on, scrolling a smartphone. He’s too cool to want the seat. To his right, a suave young gent in a grey suit, hair slicked down, hangs from a roof strap. He balances his briefcase under his free arm as he reads from his folded ‘Times’. He’s too professionally absorbed to want it. A young girl, twentyish, clings desperately to the handles of her baby’s pushchair as the carriage sways her to and fro. The child sits alert, mummified in blankets against the British weather but stultifying in this crowd’s heat. I try to catch the woman’s eye. She sees me. Reluctantly, I tilt my head towards the empty seat, inviting her to go for it. After all, she looks like she needs the break. She shakes her head and shrugs her shoulders, tapping the pushchair by way of explanation. I understand. An old man in a washed out mackintosh, battered trilby and worn shoes is wedged between her and a bunch of Japanese tourists. Surely, he could use the seat but has he noticed it? The train lurches suddenly, the tourists jostle and the old man is pushed down the aisle. No chance of him sitting down there.
He thrusts out his chin and makes a show of leaning ever closer onto the pole and spreading his stance, barring my way. The opening is lost! I’m defeated, beaten, resigned to my fate.
So I try to shift my weight to make a sly move towards that rare cushioned delight; to claim that wonderful, beautiful empty seat, that unusual oasis in this crazy crushing hell. Then I can rest my aching feet in the shoes which were never meant for walking. “Sorry, sorry, excuse me, could I just get through there?” I murmur, but I’m ignored. My fellow lemmings close ranks, shutting off my route to heaven as if not one of us has the right to be any better off than any other. I try to peer over the top of shoulders. Yes, it is still there. I try to muscle my way up and down the throng like some drunken limbo dancer, but it’s no use. I’m too tightly wedged in. I wriggle up to the suave young gent and inadvertently brush my body against his as I try to squeeze past him. He looks up, smiles, winks and rubs his chest against mine.
Yes, yes! I could do it! This is my chance! I struggle with my last ounce of strength towards that empty seat, crushing toes and barging past the young mum and the pushchair. I’m almost there. Almost! Almost! Oh, God, no! An old lady with a walking stick appears out of nowhere and sits down in my empty seat. I feel the air gush from my lungs in disappointment as another batch of lemmings push me down the aisle, jostling me well away from where I first started. ‘Doors closing’. Pwhoosh! The train gathers speed once more. I cling on for dear life to a lower rail near the old lady who stole my escape from pain. My feet hurt. My fight is gone. My strength drained away. She smiles sweetly at me. Does she know how much I hate her? “Look, dear,” she whispers kindly and points ahead of me. I turn round to look where she’s pointing. A gap has broken in the crowd where I originally stood and through that gap, I see it but I don’t believe it. I could cry. The old lady smiles once more, adding, “There’s an empty seat over there!”

His face tells me all I need to know, thank you. Affronted, I step back away from him. He looks confused, disappointed, as if his luck had changed without good reason. I feign a half smile, and mouth, “sorry”. Don’t want to give him the wrong impression or be accused of sexual assault. I turn to my left. If I could just manoeuvre round the lad with the headphones and ease myself beyond another group of sardines, I would be in with a chance. I push out one hip and dare to step to the left. He must sense my encroachment as he looks at me with shock in his eyes.
But wait! Suddenly, the train slows. I gather my strength for one last push. There may still be one faint hope! The lemmings bristle, preparing themselves to be thrown free of this torment. Pwhoosh. ‘Doors opening’, ‘Mind the gap’. Bodies bump and grind away as the train regurgitates its manna. Some leave; others try to join the madness.

Writing on the wall For two hundred years the villa thrived, producing olive oil for Roman tables. It was a good site, partly sheltered by the Camora and with views of the large lake (Laguna de Fuente de Piedra) where salt was being extracted. It was a flourishing area with several towns and the nearby settlement (Alameda) even had its own bath complex. In the middle of the third century AD a change in the local situation caused the villa to be torn down and replaced by a square fortress. Now known as the Castellum, the ruins of this Roman fortress can be seen behind the bar at the top of the hill at Santillan Parque. The park lies on the road from Mollina to Alameda about half-way between Mollina and the junction with the road to Fuente de Piedra. It makes an interesting subject for a walk from Fuente de Piedra, Humilladero or Mollina. There are toilets in the car park next to the grassy picnic site but the walk up to the Castellum is on the other side of the road, where there is a little chapel and some more picnic spots. I first visited this site in 2005 shortly after it was excavated. The outside walls stand a few feet high on three sides. The interior has been taken down to the bedrock and the finds removed to Antequera. A fence was put round the site to protect it but access through a gate allowed visitors to walk round the perimeter of the walls. In subsequent years grass has started to reclaim the site. The fence has been vandalised and twenty-first century litter strewn around. Most heinous of all though is the graffiti on the walls. 12
Neanderthals and humans started leaving marks on cave walls over 40,000 years ago. There are examples in the La Pileta cave near Benoajan. This art is thought to be an indication of the start of language. Archaeologists have found Roman graffiti on the equivalent of the backs of toilet doors in Pompeii. In contrast to the works of Caesar and Cicero these scribblings help us to gain an insight into the mind-set of ordinary people. During the First World War British Tommies left their names on the walls of buildings all over Belgium and northern France. It would be a life’s work to catalogue them all, but what a boon for family historians that would be! Graffiti takes many forms from the valuable works of Banksy, political slogans, name trees, lovers’ names, x was ‘ere, tagging and illegible squiggles. “No al anillo” is an example of the political type that has sprung up in our area recently. In the Albaicin area of Granada on a wall opposite a very attractive bar there is a range of graffiti such as “kill cop’s” and “Buenas Dias”. It is a simple job to whitewash over the graffiti and it looks as if this has been done several times, providing a fresh canvas for the scribblers. Many readers will be familiar with the “Give peas a chance” bridge on the M25. This started out as simply “PEAS”; the moniker of a notorious tagger. The rest, added some time later, apparently alludes to Peas’ frequent arrests. The bridge is, however, the only Edwardian bridge on the M25. In this case despite efforts of the authorities to remove it, the graffiti has become a well-known landmark and the public want it kept. I would be interested to know of similar examples in Spain.
The writing on the walls at the Castellum has no value as a landmark or art form. It cannot be whitewashed over. I hope it can be removed without damaging the walls but it has withstood the weather for three years already. When the 13th century Clifford’s Tower in York was vandalised with red graffiti in 2010 English Heritage classified it as a heritage crime. The defacing of the Castellum should also be regarded as a heritage crime. When the dig was completed the archaeologists could have buried the walls but they chose instead to leave them exposed so the public could see them. Several years ago Mollina town hall produced a leaflet of rutas rurales which included the Castellum and several other Roman sites in the local area, clearly intended to encourage the public to visit them. I would be interested to know what state the other sites are in.
In 2011 I tried to contact the deportes department at Mollina town hall to find out if they were aware of the state of the site and whether they would be prepared to allow a “friends of the castellum to be set up to clean up and monitor the site. My phone calls were never answered.

Under the current circumstances it is understandable that resources cannot be stretched to heritage but there is no excuse for the wanton vandalism of a historic site. We should remember that although the site is in Spain the heritage belongs to us all and we have a duty to preserve that heritage.

Football Tales & Quotes Lovely Generous Gesture from Birmingham City's Kapo French international footballer Olivier Kapo gave an apprentice player his car to thank him for polishing his boots throughout the season. The Birmingham City player gave the lad, James McPike, his Mercedes worth £30,000 as an end-ofseason present. He also agreed to pay for a year's insurance when James, 20, said he was unable to afford it. The midfielder, who is originally from the Ivory Coast in Africa, earns almost £1.5million a year. We heard that all James had asked for was Olivier's boots as a souvenir but he ended up with his car. What a magnificent present.
And now we have the formalities over, we'll have the National anthems. – ITV footy legend Brian Moore 'We signed to play until the day we died. And we did' - Jimmy Greaves, bemoaning players frequently changing clubs. The last player to score a hat-trick in a cup final was Stan Mortenson. He even had a final named after him, the Matthews final. - Lawrie McMenemy It's now 4-3 to Oldham, the goals are going in like dominoes. - Piccadilly Radio I felt a lump in my mouth as the ball went in. - Terry Venables It slid away from his left boot which was poised with the trigger cocked. - Barry Davies We have been saying this, both pre-season and before the season started. - Len Ashurst But as you know, the result for City is not as bad as it sounds on paper. - Steve McIllwenn Well actually we got the winner up there with three minutes to go, but then they equalised. - Ian McNail Ian Rush, deadly ten times out of ten, but that wasn't one of them. - Peter Jones It was a fair decision, the penalty, even though it was debatable whether it was inside or outside the box. - Sir Bobby Charlton Smiles
Believe it or not, goals can change a game. - Mike Channon 15
Pepi’s Page Refuge Life - by Alan Brian Who said that refuge life's not good, That isn't strictly true. We are fed and watered every day, Cos that's what the owners do. We can go in our great big compound, When the cleaning's being done, It's even got a little pool To cool us from the sun. There's even a place where we can go To lie out in the shade, And that's got carpet on the dirt But it's not been properly laid. That's another thing about refuge life, They never do forget That if you're feeling poorly You get taken to a vet. We even have a misting system That cools us from the sun, So refuge life is not so bad, Please tell everyone. Two-year-old Poppy and one-year-old puppies Hamm and Lola are all looking for forever homes. Lola in particular is very loving, good with other dogs and cats and comes with a full passport; she has been spayed. Can you give any of these dogs a good home? Photos - Minna Kulmala & her website is: http://www.minnakulmala.com/ 16
Pepi's Helpful Tip Now that the weather is warming up, your dog may be happier sleeping out on the patio or garden at night. If this is the case, I strongly advise you do NOT leave food and water out for them, as we found out to our considerable cost that this could cause enteritis. Flies, birds, rats and mice will all take the chance of a nice cool drink and they will all bring diseases with them. Then, when your pet takes a drink, the problems start. It could end up in a costly trip to the vet. The answer is to give them a drink before you go to bed and then throw it away. Give fresh water in the morning. Food should never be left out all day or night either, for the same reasons.

Donations Jane and Alan would like to thank Angie Alexander in memory of Bill and Val Hawkins who loved animals and who sent the refuge a box containing Scalibor dog collars and a box of various medication. Mrs Lyn Grant Thomas, from Suffolk, donated £50 from the proceeds of a yard sale after reading an article about Pepi's Refuge in Dog World UK magazine. Loli Morales Garcia sponsors Mazie, a small five-year-old cross Yorkie dog at the refuge, by supplying a sack of dog food, flea/tick treatment every three months and a donation of 20€ every month for her upkeep. Amigas de Casa from Trabuco raised 98€ from a car boot sale and 237€ at a meeting where Jane and Alan gave a presentation. They also helped Jane when Alan was ill in hospital. Restaurant Review
Restaurant Review Bar Margaritas, Steak & Grill, Mollina We booked our table for the Sunday carvery at Margaritas steak & grill restaurant in Mollina for 2pm -- and thank goodness we did! Although we knew how popular Sunday lunches were at Margaritas we were surprised that there was only one table left (reserved for us) at that time and many people were standing at the bar waiting for a table to become available. On sitting down we were served with drinks more or less straight away. However, due to the amount of people who had turned up without reservations we had a 30 minute wait while the carvery was topped up with fresh vegetables, but it was certainly worth the wait. Roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, runner beans and sprouts were available with a choice of chicken, lamb or beef and Yorkshire pudding. Howie had his usual favourite of chicken and I had the beef. There were accompaniments of apple sauce, horseradish sauce, mint and gravy from which to choose. Our empty plates confirmed how much we both enjoyed the meals; the meat and vegetables were perfectly cooked. I didn't think I had any room for sweet but the mouth-watering choices of desserts are hard to resist. The dessert list consisted of homemade strawberry pavlova, amaretto cheesecake, bread and butter pudding, rice pudding, sherry trifle, apple crumble, fruit sundae, apple pie, lemon meringue and chocolate fudge gateau. We shared the strawberry pavlova and to be honest, as much as we enjoyed the Sunday lunch, the pavlova was the highlight of the meal. On reviewing the Margaritas experience, the restaurant has character and a friendly atmosphere; a typical British restaurant with excellent homemade food. Value for money, excellent. Will we go again? Definitely -- but we will make sure we book early!! Call Bar Margaritas on 952740609 28

St George’s Day Get-together Hola from Puente Genil. For the ex-pats from outside town and the surrounding areas, the annual social calendar always kicks off with a get-together at Mo and John’s home in Aguilar to celebrate St George’s day. As always, among the red and white bunting we were treated to plenty of fine wines and ales served by mine host in the garden bar, which John has aptly christened “Georgio’s Bar”. Mo had obviously been chained to the kitchen stove for days and came up with her usual superb and very typically English menu of estofado, followed by curry and all the trimmings. For the traditionalists among us, there was cottage pie or meat and potato pie, and for those still standing, there were at least 35 different sweets to choose from, all provided by the lady attendees. (I exaggerate of course. It was probably only 34). My sister’s speciality is a mouth-watering army trifle. Someone complained that last time it didn’t have quite enough sherry. I do hope that no-one who had second helpings of this year’s special got breathalysed on the way home. And as at all our get-togethers, entertainment was provided by singing soloist host John on electric guitar with a great 50s and 60s mix, followed by travelling troubadours Dave and Dave with just….well a mix, really. And it didn’t rain. Looking forward to the next one. 30

Happiness How did you feel this morning when you woke up? Did you awake filled with joy and expectation for the day ahead, or did you wake with a feeling of heaviness at the thought of what was to come? How would your life be different if you were to awake every morning feeling happy? Do you even know what happiness feels like, and how do we embody happiness into our lives, making it more than just a mysterious, fleeting feeling? This question of how to be happy and what it means has been asked by teachers, spiritual leaders and philosophers for centuries. Today, the same questions are being asked. How do we achieve the elusive state of happiness whilst living real lives in the real world? I believe that we all do what we do because we believe that by doing it, or having it, we will be happier. The pursuit of health, wealth, fame, possessions and love; all appear valuable because of our belief that once we have them, our lives will be transformed and we will finally be happy. But would we? Does having something lead to long term happiness? Is happiness something we can find outside of ourselves? How long does the elation that comes with the purchase of a new car/pair of shoes/set of golf clubs actually last? Could it be that this is only ‘relative’ happiness, and that true ‘absolute’ happiness cannot be gained from an external source, or it can only be found within? If this is so, how can we actually embody the energy of happy? Can we turn it on at will? Could it be that the state of happiness is actually a choice? Is it true that we do have the ability to see what we want to see? For example, take a look around the room in which you are sitting and make a mental note of everything that is brown in colour. Really look and
32
Once you have done this, close your eyes, pause and visualise everything in the room that is blue. What can you remember? The chances are that you did not see anything that was blue, because you were not looking for it. We see what we want to see, so perhaps we can feel happy when we want to, regardless of what is happening around us. Aristotle certainly believed this, saying; “Happiness depends on ourselves.” So, how do we do it? How do we find internal happiness when external circumstances seem to be propelling us towards misery? Could it be that many of us do not believe we actually deserve to feel happy? How many times were you chastised or punished as a child for being too happy? Or told to settle down when you were having fun, because of the adults’ fear that ‘’it will all end in tears’’. Children know how to live in the moment, for most of the time ‘now’ is the only time that exists in the life of a child. This ability to be present ‘in the moment,’ is what enables the child to access more happiness than their preoccupied parents. This concept is easier to understand if we think of happiness as a function of how we are relating to the present moment, rather than as something that is ‘’outside of us’’ waiting to be found. If our happiness is dependent upon external circumstances that we cannot control, it continues to be something out of reach and not quite attainable. If it is viewed merely as the way in which we relate to the moment in which we find ourselves, we have a choice; we can choose whether we improve the quality of this moment or not, and by doing so we regain control. So, how do you infuse your life with more happiness?
One way is to cultivate friendships with happy people. In a recent study, Deepak Chopra discovered that if you have a happy friend, your chances of being happy go up by 15 per cent. Furthermore, if your happy friend has a happy friend that you don’t know, your chances of being happy go up by another 10 per cent, and if your happy friend has another happy friend that also has a happy friend that you don’t know, your chances of being happy go up by another 7 per cent! If your pool of happy friends is limited, you could try these 10 strategies to bring more happiness into your life.

Healthy Living
1. Adopt an attitude of appreciation. Spend the first few moments of every day appreciating what you have rather than dwelling on what you have not got. If things are really tough, just appreciating your lovely warm bed is enough to get you started. Your happiness levels can be further elevated by spending another few minutes at the end of every day writing down three things that you have done well during the day. These things can be small or huge, their size is unimportant; recording them is what will bring benefits. 2. Give more hugs. A study carried out at Pennsylvania State University showed that giving a minimum of five nonsexual, two armed, front to front hugs a day to people other than your partner, increases your level of happiness. 3. Do what you are good at more of the time. When you do what you excel at on a daily basis you will become significantly happier for months to come. 4. Deliberately and consciously carry out acts of kindness. Choose one day a week on which you will carry out five acts of kindness for others, without any expectation of receiving anything in return. The happy feeling that follows will stay with you for days. 5. Create something to look forward to. You can increase your happiness levels not only by planning to do something you will enjoy but by anticipating it. So plan ahead early to maximize on the benefits it will bring you. 6. Spend more time with friends. Studies have shown that having a better social life and spending time with people with whom you feel an intimate bond increases your level of happiness. 7. Lower your expectations. We all have high expectations of ourselves and others. We often set standards so high that we cannot fail to be disappointed. It has been said that “expectations are resentments in training” so, if you want to be happier, expect less out of yourself and others. 8. Love more and judge less. Love your own company and forgive yourself your imperfections. Practice being non-judgemental and love your fellow humans, knowing that they are doing the best they can with the information they have available to them at the time. 9. Give yourself permission to be selfish and put yourself first. Learning to say ‘no’ is one of the most important things we can learn to do as adults. Constantly putting the needs of others before our own is not going to result in our ‘absolute’ happiness. By all means be kind to others most of the time, but not at the expense of our own needs. 10. Spend time in quiet contemplation. Make your life a living meditation by returning to your breath and enjoying the moment, whatever it holds. Life happens now, in this moment -- not yesterday or tomorrow, so enjoy it.

Do I need a coach and mentor? If you had asked me that question a month ago, I would probably have said ‘no’. I always assumed I knew where I was going and what I wanted. I’m not as well organised, in my mind as I am in my work, but I figured I didn’t need any help from anyone. However, a friend of mine who is, a life coach -- amongst other things --, asked me to be a guinea pig for her. She is re- training to be a coach as she hasn’t done it for a while, and she asked me if I would be her first customer. She offered free coaching sessions in return for being practiscd on and me giving honest feedback at the end of it all so I thought, what the hell, it can’t hurt can it? I had my first session this week. To be honest, it felt as though I was having a chat with a friend which I suppose I was but we were jotting things down on paper and talking about what I wanted from life; which, things are important to me and where I wanted to go in the future. She set up questions and has some great tools to “measure” where you are in all aspects of your life at the moment. We then went over what I would like to change for the better, and how to go about it.
38
I had to set myself goals and work out ways to start achieving them over the next week before my second session. I have health, personal and work goals to aim for and my mentor has an uncanny knack of getting these out of you. I have often read in blogs and on websites that one of the most important tasks of the day/week/ month is to set yourself goals then you have something solid to aim for by a certain time. I had never been able to do this as I could never think of what my goals are, but by talking things through, I managed to decide what I want and actually do something about it. It was a revelation! Coaching isn’t just about extracting things from your cluttered and unfocused mind:, things that you always knew but didn’t necessarily know you knew! It is also about having a motivator someone to push you in the right direction, to nudge you gently if you stray from your path. I think we all need this;, support from family is one thing, but it isn’t always the right kind of support however well- meaning it is. A coach can help you to see where you want to be;, whether in your work life, your relationships, your health or whatever. They make you see clearly and then they keep pushing you in the right direction until you reach your goals. As you can tell, I am newly converted., I assumed life coaching was for people who couldn’t cope with life on their own;, who were emotionally or socially lacking and needed someone to tell them how to live, work, love but it isn’t that at all. Coaching is about someone helping you to focus your thoughts and helping you to realise what your goals are, and how you can achieve them. By Diana Berryman
Recipe Patrick Hill's chocolate and cola cake You will need: 8 inch round cake tin lined with greaseproof paper. Set oven to 150 (fan oven) or 180 conventional oven. For the cake 250g caster sugar 200g self raising flour 100ml milk 1 egg 1/2 tsp vanilla essence 2 tbsp plain yoghurt 125g butter tsp salt 3tbsp cocoa powder, or drinking chocolate if you have a sweet tooth. 1/2 can of cola. For the Icing The other half of the cola 3tbsp cocoa 30g butter 100g icing sugar Method First, you need to put the butter, cocoa, and half the can of cola into a saucepan, and place on the hob to melt. While this is melting, place the flour and sugar into a large bowl. Then in a jug, measure out your milk, then add the vanilla and yoghurt and egg. Whisk together till smooth. So you now have your 3 component parts to make the cake! Now you need to add your melted cocoa mix into your bowl containing your flour mix. Beat this until it is a smooth paste, then add in your milk mix. The mix will be thin -- a lot like a batter -- but this is normal. The mix is now ready for you to pop into your tin. Put it in the oven. It should take around 40 mins but you may take a little longer -- if you touch the top, it should have a little spring and then you know it is ready. It is a cake that does not really matter if it sinks a little – it is supposed to be gooey! Once cooked, leave in the tin to cool. Now for the finishing touch. In a pan, place the rest of the cola, the cocoa and butter to melt. Once melted, bit by bit add your icing sugar till you have a thin chocolate icing. Pour onto your cake and leave to cool and soak. You’re done -- serve with fresh strawberries and some thick cream!

Easter Procession - Fuente de Piedra As every year on good Friday, The Town Mayor and Maria Santisima de los Dolores left the church in Fuente de Piedra on its procession through the streets. This marked the fact that the lord Jesus had been crucified and had been taken into the heavens, with the empty cross with the white sheet placed on top as the image. The tradition in Fuente de Piedra is that the townswomen carry the naked cross, adorned with a few candles and flowers as a sign of pain, followed by the men carrying the image of a sobbing mother who had just lost her son. The procession left the church at 8pm and returned at 10.30 at night, just before it started to rain -- the skies had been dark throughout the evening. As every year, the majority of the townsfolk followed the procession, some carrying candles. A band played solemn music to accompany each step.

La Concepcion Historical-Botanical Gardens, Malaga by Nick & Mo Bishop Well, at last the wettest March on record came to an end and the sun finally came out. We were able to make our annual ‘pilgrimage’ to the wonderful botanical garden of Finca la Concepcion, just to the north of Malaga. The garden was originally created by the Marquis of Loring and his wife, Amelia Heredia, in the mid 19th century. They travelled the world and brought back plants and trees from many different countries to create the original garden and start the collection which now numbers almost 3,000. The garden was purchased by another family in 1911 after the death of the Marquis, but although they undertook some more work expanding the garden, it fell into decline. Eventually, the garden was purchased by Malaga city council in 1990 and opened to the public in 1994. The Malaga authorities really are to be applauded for the way they have restored and maintained the garden and created this peaceful little oasis on the edge of an urban sprawl. Indeed, as you walk around it, it is difficult to believe that you are little more than 100 metres from the busy A45, or so close to the city of Malaga itself. We were also impressed to see groups of students being taken around the garden and the focus that there was on future conservation -- especially for some of the more endangered species.

As soon as you enter the garden you begin to enjoy the sensory delights that it has to offer. The sights and smells of the different plants, shrubs and trees are splendid in themselves, but add to this the songs of the wide diversity of birds that have made the garden their home, or the croaking of the frogs that inhabit the many pools and watercourses, and it really is a delight. Among the wonderful flora and fauna to be found in the garden are the spectacular grove of black bamboo, a magnificent collection of palms, the giant ficus and more than 80 different species of trees from around the world. Wonderful though all of these are, a special mention must be made of the fabulous wisteria arbor. Situated next to the imposing mansion of the Marquis of Loring, this feature alone is worth the entrance fee! When it is in full flower -- usually early April -- it really is stunning. The scent reaches you before you see it, but nothing can prepare you for the fabulous sight of the mass of mauve flowers cascading down. The wisteria will be in full flower at a slightly different time each year, depending on the weather, but if you telephone the garden information office, they will give you up-todate information.

La Concepcion Historical-Botanical Gardens,Malaga cont’d There are three signed walks around the garden. The first is easy and is suitable for wheelchairs or for those with limited mobility. The second is again easy, but not suitable for wheelchairs, while the third is of medium difficulty and gives you the opportunity to take in the forest route. There are guided tours available, but you are able to do your own thing and amble about as you wish. Whichever way you choose to explore the garden there seems to be something of interest around every corner, and the shade of the trees provides a welcome break from the heat of high summer. If you do decide to visit, do make sure to make your way to the historical viewing point, mirador historico, as this will not only give you wonderful views of the gardens from above, but also across to the city of Malaga as far as the castle and cathedral. Also worth a look is the Loring museum with its archeological remains. These consist largely of Roman statues -- or parts of them at least -- discovered in Malaga in the 19th century. There is also a very nice café, close to the entrance. They sell a variety of food and drinks and we can thoroughly recommend their home-made carrot cake! The garden is very easy to reach, whether you are coming from Antequera on the A45 or from Malaga itself. If you don’t have a car, there is a bus service from Malaga, with bus number 2, or, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, with bus number 61. The gardens are closed on Mondays, Christmas and New Year’s day and open each day at 9:30am. The current entrance fee is 4.20 euro for adults and 2.10 euro for children and seniors over 65. You can obtain more information, or book a guided tour, by phoning 952 25 2148, or by visiting the website on http://laconcepcion.ayto-malaga.es So many people we have spoken to have lived here for many years and never visited the garden, even though they have probably driven past it numerous times. If you have not yet visited you are missing a real treat, so if you enjoy trees, plants and birdlife, want somewhere to take friends and family when they visit, or just want some space away from the crowded beaches for a few hours relaxing in the fresh air, this is the place to go.
