Introduction
Hola Everyone, April saw business picking up very well after a quiet spring, but May seems to have been a bad month for a lot of people regarding allergies, viruses, and infections. More & more people are wearing masks at this time of year. Howie spent a week in Antequera Hospital with pneumonia & would like to thank everyone for their get well wishes and, on behalf of all the readers, we wish a total recovery to Irish Richie from Fuente de Piedra, who suffered very serious head injuries recently and is in Antequera Hospital recuperating. Now here we are on the brink of the summer season and very welcome it is too. We have a lot going on in this edition, so make sure you read every advert and article on every page. As a thank you to all advertisers in this magazine, we will be putting their business cards / names into a raffle. The winner will receive 1 night Bed & Breakfast in the 5 star Magdalena Hotel. We will announce the winner in the next edition. The Last Word: If you're expecting family and friends over on holiday, don't forget to remind them to not only put on and keep re-applying sun protection to your skin but also conditioner on your hair as well. The blazing sun will not only fade your hair colour rapidly, it will dehydrate it and leave it dull, lifeless and as dry as straw. Wear a hat if possible at all times & rinse hair well after swimming. Check children regularly & all you men with thinning hair, please, please, please keep your heads covered and use high sun protection too. More cases of skin cancer than ever are being treated now. Take care & enjoy your Summer

‘Al Fresco Dining’ - Does Spain Lack Smoke Free Areas? Most tourists come to Spain for diverse reasons. One of the fundamentals is that Spain’s renowned magnificent weather accompanies them during their visit. For expatriate residents and visitors alike, it is customary to enjoy sitting outside a bar or restaurant in one of the numerous terraced areas, under a sunshade or soaking up the sunshine, partaking of a meal, or sipping a cool iced drink. Here you can enjoy either the summer sun or the warmth of a fine winter’s day. These popular areas are a relaxing place to take in the views and capture the aroma of the fresh sea air. The latter is no longer a reality. For a few years, there has been a blanket ban on smoking in restaurants bars and most indoor public places. Even so, many nonsmokers, who look forward to a smoke free environment, did not take into account how this law was to be ineffectual in a country where daily life is enjoyed in the open. Smokers, who are now banned from smoking indoors, inhabit the terraces and outdoor spaces. For non smokers, it is now almost impossible to avoid the tobacco smoke which drifts from the smokers sitting at the other tables that surround them. Restaurant and bar owners seem to be oblivious to the discomfort experienced by many of their clients which includes children and young babies. It may be a good idea to provide smoking areas with some type of transparent plastic partitions. If this does not become common practice, nonsmokers will no longer be able to enjoy the Spanish tradition of open air dining.
It may appear comical, but it is illegal to drive in flip flops in Spain It is unlikely that tourists visiting Spain will be familiar with all the laws relating to driving on Spanish roads. Those of us who reside here are expected to be aware of these laws. Most, having taken practical and theory tests back home, may never have read up on the regulations. Summer is almost here and the spring weather has us all throwing off our winter footwear for something lighter. Off to the beach? Take note of this warning. Be conscious of what footwear you slip on to get behind the wheel of your vehicle. It is illegal to drive in flip flops, any similar type of sandals or to go barefoot. If stopped and asked to step out of your vehicle, it is highly likely that you will be presented with a fine. Consider keeping a light fabric type of shoe in the car. 4

Dog of the month Scooby. Male aged around 2/3 yrs. Lovely friendly young man; not dog friendly all the time but with training could be. Will be castrated, vaccinated and chipped.
Tip: If your dog sleeps out on the patio at night due to the heat, please DON'T leave out water or food. Give your dog a drink, then tip the water out before you go to bed. The reasons I give are:- at night, the rats will take advantage of a nice cool drink; also the birds in the early morning; not to mention the flies. They will all bring diseases, which could prove fatal for your dog or lead to a very costly vet's bill.
Just to let you know how it is in Spain... Last year when I walked one of the dogs through the olive groves, not more than 200 meters from the refuge, I found hundreds of little blue packets next to the irrigation pipes. I knew instantly what they were - RAT POISON - deadly to all animals. I took photos of them and that evening showed them to my vet. She was horrified and instantly phoned the Guardia Civil ( Seprona). SEPRONA'S REPLY. If they are by the irrigation pipes, then it would say to me, it's to stop the rats chewing the tubes to get a drink. That's what rat poison is for, killing rats. VET'S REPLY. What about all the other animals? SEPRONA'S REPLY. If it's not on your land, it's none of your business and if you are on their land, then you are trespassing . MY THOUGHTS. So this will kill the rabbits and partridges too. The gamekeeper can legally kill shoot your dog if it's seen chasing the rabbits, so can he not shoot the farmer for killing the rabbits and every other animal.

Bringing home the Bacon At their May social meeting, members of The Royal British Legion Mollina branch were given a demonstration of how to turn a piece of pork into delicious Dry Cured Bacon. Bill Montgomery, a branch member, who owns a small holding near Seville, illustrated how a small amount of sugar and salt with a large dollop of patience can turn the most boring joint of pork (the Belly) into a succulent meal. In true Blue Peter fashion, he brought along some he had made earlier and this was transformed by volunteers Barbara Knight and Wendy Kirkwood into delicious Bacon Butties for members raising over â‚Ź70 for the Poppy appeal. Bill, who also makes his own sausages, is a qualified bee-keeper and breeds turkeys for Christmas. The Mollina Branch is one of 15 across Spain South and meets on the 2ndand 4thTuesday of each month (excluding July& August) at the La Vina residential Park Mollina. Parque de la Ciencias, Granada One very wet weekend in March, we were looking to find something to do that would entertain the family, which included a seventeen and an 8 year old. Our criteria was that it had to be mainly inside (due to the weather) a drivable distance for the day and relatively inexpensive. After a bit of searching around, we chose to go to the science museum in Granada. Having researched it on-line and convincing the younger members that science museums tend to generally be more “hands-on” than most other museums, it got the thumbs up and so off we went.
Getting there, parking and prices After a drive along the A-92 we arrived in Granada and easily found the Parque de la Ciencias. It´s located off the Circunvalación ring road, Camino de Ronda and only a 15 minute walk from the town´s historic centre. Parking was easy as there is a big car park directly under the museum which costs only €1 for 3 hours with your entry ticket (remember to ask for the parking discount at the ticket desk). An adult ticket is €6.50, under eighteens and over sixty fives €5.50. Tickets for the Planetarium are an additional €2.50 and €2.00
What is there to do? The museum is a very large modern building spread over an area of 70,000m2 and packed with lots of interactive displays and interesting sections to visit. There are a variety of exhibitions, some are temporary like the food and nutrition exhibition and others are permanent. We particularly enjoyed the journey through the human body area where there was variety of interesting exhibits, including a mind-control brain wave experiment, glowing heat sensors of your own body and a puzzle of internal organs. Other exhibitions to see include optical illusions which was great fun and had various experiments with light and sound. The Eureka Chamber gives you a chance to experiment with different physics and engineering problems (electricity, magnets, pulleys and gears and building arches) which got everyone thinking a little. The Biosphere area is structured around life on our planet. An interesting, if not a little unusual area was The Attic Room where there were various curiosities including a safe to crack open and a working typewriter which our 8 year old found fascinating! Don´t worry if your Spanish isn´t too good as the majority of the exhibitions are in both Spanish and English. 18
Outside there are also plenty of things to do. Going up to the top of the 50m observation tower (covered in giant ants!) gives you a 360 degree view of Granada. Using the binoculars available you get a great panoramic view of the city and the Sierra Nevada. Access to the top is by lift with stairs for coming down, and is also accessible by wheelchair. One word or warning though, the tower shuts from 2pm – 5pm. Something that grabbed our attention for quite a while was the mechanical art sculpture “Kugelbahn 13” This is aimed at both young and old and the aim is to follow balls through a maze designed with pulleys, pistons and gears. There is also a butterfly house to look around and other areas outside include water experiments, a puzzle area and a small maze.
Anywhere to eat? Yes, 2 cafes and a restaurant serving menu del dia for approx €10. We grabbed a baguette in one of the cafes so we could shelter from the rain for a while. The food was good and reasonably priced. With better weather it would be ideal to take a picnic as there are plenty of shaded areas with picnic tables and benches.
Opening times Tuesday to Saturday 10.00am until 7.00pm, Sunday and holidays 10.00am until 3.00pm. Closed on Mondays. CK

Football Legends – Sir Tom Finney by Stuart Govier Sadly the footballing world lost another of its great exponents when the Preston Plumber passed away on Valentines Day the 14th February 2014 aged 91. But what made Sir Tom so special? In this day and age when you just have to sneeze to be admired as a footballing legend it’s refreshing to consider that Preston can call on a true footballing genius as one of their own. It’s difficult for us these days to reflect on past players and gauge just how good they were but I’ll leave it to Sir Stanley Matthews to explain Finney’s skills – he once said: "To dictate the pace and course of a game, a player has to be blessed with awesome qualities. Those who have accomplished it on a regular basis can be counted on the fingers of one hand – Pelé, Maradona, Best, Di Stefano, and Tom Finney." In 1958 Finney became England’s leading goalscorer with his tally of 30 goals and this still ranks as 6th in the all time list bettered only by Sir Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker, Jimmy Greaves, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney. Until his death Finney still played an active role in Preston North End as their club President. It’s incredible to think he was first offered terms by the club as a youngster just before the Second World War. Due to the suspension of football during the war his career was delayed until at the age of 24, he made his debut for the Lilywhites in 1946 and then within the month he also made his England debut.
22
To supplement his income he also worked in his family’s plumbing business and became known as the “Preston Plumber”. In those early days his skill and ability shone out above his peers and somewhat unfairly the North End side were often described as "the Plumber and his 10 drips." But what made Finney stand out above others? It was true there were greater showmen like Matthews playing at that time whereas Finney’s skill lay in his willingness to sacrifice his own interests or fitness for the good of the team. He had the ability to bring his team mates into the game with his mastery and control of the football. He was versatile, playing in all the orthodox five forward positions of the day for Preston and appearing for England at right-wing, left-wing and centre-forward. He was a genuine two-footed player, packing an explosive shot in either his right or his left. He had speed, balance, was a pin-point passer and for a man of no great height, could head with awesome power. Finney made things happen. He would take hold of a game, run 20, perhaps 30, yards with the ball beating defender after defender. Then he would either feint outside, reaching the bye-line before putting in a telling cross, or he would cut inside and shoot at goal himself. He played 76 times for his country and his 30 goals compare well with today’s Rooney who has scored 38 times in his 88 appearances. Had the War not taken away that productive age period of 18-24 years of age who knows how many more goals Finney would have scored for his country. He was crowned Footballer of the Year in 1953–54 and once more in 1956–57, becoming the first player to win this award more than once. When injury curtailed his footballing career in 1960 he had played for only the one club, his beloved Preston and in 473 games scored a more than reasonable 210 goals. Interesting Articles
I’ll leave the last words to one of Finney’s team mates of nine years (1949-1958) the ex Chelsea and Manchester United manager Tommy Docherty: “Lionel Messi is an immature Tom Finney. He reminds me of him with his attitude, an approach he plays. You never see him concerned in any tasteless things, we never hear him criticising anyone, and that was Finney. To me Messi is Finney reborn.” 23

False Friends by Jenny Whiteley Constipado, embarazada, sensible, actualmente! These Spanish words may look like English words but they have different meanings. Because their misleading familiarity can lead to amusing or embarrassing results they are known as false friends. A person who is constipado is not constipated, he has a cold (congested). The Spanish and English words both come from the Latin word constipare meaning to crowd together. Latin is the main reason for our false friends. After the fall of Rome the various Romance languages developed separately to create different but similar languages. In Britain however, the Romans took their language with them when they left, ceding the territory to Celtic and Anglo-Saxon languages and later Old Norse. But Latin was only temporarily absent. Educated people learnt Latin and it was also widely used by the Christian Church. Although some works were written in English, most people wrote in Latin. Until the sixteenth and even into the seventeenth centuries Latin was a lingua franca in Europe. When Catharine of Aragon arrived in England to marry Prince Arthur she could not speak a word of English, nor could the English royals speak any Spanish, but they were able to communicate through Latin, in which they were all well versed. Latin entered the English language a second time through Norman French. The new words were often paired with English such as calf (English) and veal (French), cow (English) and beef (French), pig (English) and pork (French). Often the new words were used for specialist areas such as the law and cooking. Sometimes French or Latin words remained synonyms for English words but they often took on subtle nuances of meaning, giving English its richness. About two-thirds of English words have Latin or French origin but 80% of the words most commonly used in English have Germanic origin. Over time the meanings of words often change. We need only think of words like gay and wicked. But this has been going on for hundreds of years. Small wonder then that Latin-derived words in one language take on different meanings in another language. Embarazada, which means pregnant in Spanish, not embarrassed, has a somewhat different history. It seems to have entered English from Spanish through French, in the sense of its second meaning; to hamper or restrict. The Spanish word is derived from a Portuguese word embaraรงar also meaning to hinder. It is not of Latin origin and may have its roots in Celtic, which was spoken in the Iberian Peninsular before the Romans arrived.
26
Sensible means sensitive e.g. dientes y encias sensibles (sensitive teeth and gums). Actualmente means at the present. Molestar means to bother or disturb. These are true false friends because they never have the same meaning as the English. But words often have more than one meaning and sometimes the number of meanings can be considerable. In these circumstances they may sometimes mean the same in Spanish and English depending on the context. But this makes for even more traps for the unwary. Discutir means to discuss and to argue, raro means rare and also strange. An announcement at a major Spanish bus station asked passengers to “always keep under control your baggage and hand baggage.” We can ignore the foreign word order for a moment and think about the use of the word “control”. The Spanish word Controlar means to control, to monitor and to keep watch on. In English we might see the sign “Please keep dogs under control”. Baggage cannot misbehave and does not need to be controlled. “Control” is clearly a false friend in this context. Two false friends widely used by the ex-pat community here in Spain are urbanisation and reform. Urbanización means a housing development or estate but the English word urbanisation means urban development and refers to the process in which towns grow and society becomes more geared to urban living.
Because of their derivation from the same source false friends sometimes help to give us a general idea of the meaning, but any word that looks like an English word should also be regarded with suspicion. Don’t get hung up on words, think about the meaning. 27

Reforma means an alteration or improvement and comes from the verb reformar to alter or improve. If you bought an old house in the UK you might wish to renovate, refurbish or do it up but you would not reform it. We reform laws, systems and people but not houses.

Do you have a Toxic Relationship? All relationships whether they are with a friend, a partner, a lover, a relative or even a work colleague may have problems now and again; usually an upset or a disagreement that is fought over then forgiven, even if not always forgotten. A Toxic Relationship (TR)is one that constantly diminishes you as a person, reducing your confidence, self-esteem, self-belief and can affect both your mental and physical health. You are told and, therefore, end up feeling not good enough; that things that go wrong are your fault. In a Toxic Relationship the perpetrator will make the other person look inferior, both in private and in front of others and will often be upset if they are not the centre of attention in the relationship. They will also make any issue their issue. For example you go home and announce you have had to take a pay cut rather than the company making redundancies, the TR perpetrator will say: “How will I manage now that you have done that?” or “what did you do to make them do that to you?” And they will not want to hear your answer or response. The perpetrator will ensure you feel guilty and/or needy and they will tell you that you could not survive without them. Usually the opposite is the truth! They are scared that you can and might leave them, so they do their best to control your feelings, emotions and actions. Are you in a Toxic Relationship? If so, how are you going to deal with it? Almost all relationship problems are dealt with through communication and if you don’t want to lose the relationship then you are going to have to talk about the issue. Don’t be vitriolic or threatening towards them, explain how their actions make you feel and tell them you would like the relationship to work but there must be changes. If they refuse to change or promise to change but don’t, then you have to consider whether or not to end that relationship. If you need help dealing with a Toxic Relationship call Bren Hosking on 655 743 865 or email bren@innersolutions.eu for further information and advice.

Nerja - There’s something about it Whether you’re looking for one of the best all year round climates in Europe, sandy beaches and coves, water-sports or fine dining, then the relaxed seaside town of Nerja could be just what you’re looking for. Situated on the eastern tip of the Costa del Sol, Nerja can date its history back to prehistoric times. Discovered in 1959, The Nerja Caves display some of the finest primitive paintings in the world and are now one of the biggest tourist attractions in Spain. As yet largely unexplored, the caves are thought to stretch for many kilometres into the mountains between Nerja and Granada. One of the enormous caverns has been transformed into a concert hall, which during the summer holds musical performances amongst the stalagmites and stalactites. It was settled by the Romans of whom remains can still be seen and then by the Moors in the 8th century. It was originally called Narixa which translates as ‘abundant spring’, and was famous for its agricultural and silk products. Now mango, papaya and avocado crops thrive in the semi-tropical climate. Another of Nerja’s biggest attractions is the Balcón de Europa (Balcony of Europe) in the centre of town. It was originally known as La Batería in reference to the gun battery which stood within a fortified tower and was destroyed during the Peninsular War. In 1812 two British warships fighting with the Spanish against the French off the coast of Granada opened fire and razed the tower along with another nearby. In remembrance to these times, two cannons are sited on the balcón and chunks of the battery are still visible in the waters below. There is also a statue of King Alfonso XII, who is believed to have said ‘This is the balcony of Europe’ when visiting the site after a devastating earthquake in the late 19 th century. Nowadays, Nerja still retains a small town image that has not succumbed to the over developed high-rise feel of other towns on the Costa del Sol. It is flanked by the Sierra Almijara mountain range which carves its way down to the coast creating beautiful secluded coves with crystal clear water. One can enjoy a wide variety of water sports from water skiing to scuba diving and even the ski resorts of the Sierra Nevada are under two hours away. It’s not too far flung to imagine skiing in the morning and sunbathing on the beach in the afternoon! The town, especially in the pedestrianised centre also boasts over four hundred bars and restaurants with such a diversity of menus from all over the globe that all palates should be catered for.

So, as you have read, whether you’re a history buff, a foodie or a sunworshipper, there’s definitely something about Nerja that appeals to everyone. Did I mention that in the 1970’s the questions for the board game Trivial Pursuit were concocted in Nerja by two Canadians over a few beers?

10 Exercises for the Spine : a regime to prevent back pain It's me again, Julia Fadlallah, the German physiotherapist, who lives and works in Antequera. Hope you enjoyed my article about back pain in the last edition of Inland Solutions Magazine. This time I will describe "10 exercises for the lower spine ", which you can do regularly at home, in order to prevent back pain. Back pain is an increasing issue. Most back problems are due to bad posture, which is caused by lack of movement, untrained and weak spine muscles. You only need 15 minutes a day for the exercises. If you do them regularly, you will strengthen your back muscles and keep fit without pain. What do you need for the exercises ? Comfortable clothes a gym mat or blanket ( If it is not possible to do them on the floor, you can do them on your bed.) General tips and advice for the exercises : Breath rhythmically in and out and never hold your breath during the exercises. Do your exercise slowly and correctly. Do not exercise with pain. Consult a physiotherapist ! If you feel uncomfortable with an exercise ask a physiotherapist to show you how. People who have never done exercises should first consult a physiotherapist. Do the exercises in the order shown from 1 to 10. Try to find a daily routine e.g. exercise every morning. Have fun doing your exercises ! The June Wedding By Ella Durham Judith stood in the entrance of the church and peered in. It was empty. She closed her eyes and breathed in. The warm smell of dusty walls and furniture polish mingling with the scent of white roses stroked her nostrils. She stepped inside. It was just as she’d remembered it. ‘I hope those I once knew come here and feel the same tingle as I do,’ she mused. ‘It is going to be lovely to see some old faces again. I only hope they recognise me all dressed up!’ She looked round. The familiar stone walls still bore the old and worn guild banners and flags she remembered from her childhood, but the mere fact they remained hanging showed they still held a special pride for the congregation. The summer flower arrangements which framed the altar and adorned the pews were magnificent. Clearly the dedication of the womenfolk who shared a floral passion for this place had not diminished over the years. Judith felt the peace of the place just as she had all those years ago when as a child she had knelt and taken her first communion. The memory made her smile and suddenly she was that child again; nervous but happy in her white dress and gloves with a ribbon in her hair. Her parents glowing with pride while her uncle snapped away on his camera, preserving the memory. In her teenage years she would listen to the sermons of Reverend Hartley. Often it was a poor effort during her university holidays when hang-overs got the better of her and she’d had to prise her eyes open to stay awake. Such was the folly of youth! Yet even then, she knew she would come here for this very special day; a June wedding. Lots of women want a June wedding to be a very special day. And so it was to be for her. She began to walk up the aisle. Slowly, carefully, stepping her pace like any bride would do. She giggled to herself. How foolish! “Ah, hello, my dear,” a voice spoke softly behind her. “I see you have come to make your final arrangements.” She looked down the aisle to see old Reverend Hartley ambling towards her using a walking stick, his other hand outstretched in greeting. “Hello, Reverend.” Judith shook his hand. “Yes, I thought I’d better come to see if all I’d asked for was ready and I am pleased to see that your leg seems a little better. At least you are up and about again - just in time,” she added softly. She always found herself whispering in a church. It was just something you did. “Ah, yes, the old war wound!” chuckled the Reverend, tapping his thigh. “The doctors told me to rest as much as possible but how could I when I have had this beautiful church to work in? Shall we sit down? My leg is rather tired.” “Yes, of course.” Judith replied. “We have lots to discuss before tomorrow. Finishing touches, I suppose you could say.” They sat. “Now then, hymns?” asked the old vicar. “All sorted. I think everyone should know the tune and Mr Bradbury says the organ is playing well these days. So I hope people do sing up. Weddings are happy occasions so singing is what I love to hear.”

“Quite right, my dear. I always enjoy a cheery verse of 'Morning Has Broken’. Our villagers are usually in tuneful voice - you could almost think they were Welsh! Oh, it will be a wonderful day for you, Judith. I am delighted that you have chosen this church in which to begin your new future tomorrow. I’m told you excelled at university and made your parents very proud of you. Although why you should want to come back here after all of your wonderful experiences abroad, I don’t know! I’m sure there are many other places of worship which could have served your purpose just as well, if not better.” “Perhaps,” she replied, “but none would have given me the same pleasure as that of my own village church. Look around you. Isn’t it beautiful? I knew exactly what it should look like and it does! It is such an important occasion for me tomorrow, Reverend, so when I had the chance, I jumped at it. It’s not often that these things become available when you want them to be. Lots of brides want a June wedding so services are booked months or years in advance. So for me to be here now is well...it must be fate.” “Or God’s will, my dear,” the old man offered. Judith smiled. “It’s been my dream for years, as I’m sure you know. No other place would ever do!” She laughed. The old reverend touched her hand. “I understand. May I be the first to wish you well?” he asked, rising. “But I shall see you before the service, yes?” Judith asked. “Of course, but I doubt you'll recall a word we may chat about. Take it from me, you will be terribly nervous and far too busy concentrating on the vows, wondering whether the video photographer is in the right place and worrying whether the organ will be played off key! It will all pass in a bit of a blur. So try to enjoy the service and have a wonderful wedding.” He headed towards the door. Then he stopped and turned to face her once more. “One more thing, if I may be so bold.” “Yes?” “Don’t forget to take off that awful jumper before you pull on your cassock. Otherwise, it can get very hot and uncomfortable underneath - and we can’t have our new lady vicar conducting her very first village wedding service, a June wedding at that, with a beetroot red face, can we?!” Judith’s hand automatically went to her throat and felt the stiff white collar she wore. “I’ll try to remember. Thank you, Reverend Hartley, and don’t worry, I won’t let you down. Enjoy your retirement.”
