Introduction

Here we are again folks and another "New Look" magazine, I hope you like it!! We´re having an early start to the summer and it´s nice to be able to get out of trousers and leggins and start feeling the warmth of the sunshine again. I don´t get much time to sunbathe so its a tan out of a bottle for me and its much safer too.

There are still more ex pats going back to the UK for good and not enough coming to replace themso it is still a worry for all of us with businesses and homes to rent and sell. However I do feel at this moment in time, that it is a much better choice health wise & financially to stay in Spain than return to the UK. As far as families are concerned I think that is the No 1 reason for returning to the UK for most Mums and Grandparents and I can understand that, I miss my children and grandchildren very much too. So to all of you with plans to return to the UK, here´s wishing you a happy return to your family and friends.

Sending Get Well wishes to Margaret and Sylvia who both live in Los Almendros and who have both been very ill. So until the next edition, take care and remember, local businesses advertising in this magazine are waiting to serve you, the local residents in the area so please support them.

Seville Aquarium / Acuario de Sevilla Having opened in September 2014, the theme of the aquarium is based around the sea expedition to South America that took place in 1519 by Ferdinand Magellan and then Juan Sebastian Elcano. This was the first circumnavigation of the world and the aquarium looks at the different creatures that would have been found on the voyage. The aquarium has 7,000 animals, both freshwater and marine, from tiny fish to sharks. There are over 400 species that can be seen including giant octopuses, rays, turtles, starfish and squid. The star attractions are 2 bull sharks that are homed in an impressively huge 9 metre deep tank you can walk through with a good complex of glass cover tunnels that allows views of the sharks, rays, mackerel and tuna from the top, below and sideways.

Each of the 40 specially built tanks has an LCD panel with information about the different inhabitants of the tank. The coral reef tanks feature colourful tropical fish, with brilliant blue and yellow markings. Strange-looking species include puffer fish and pipe fish. In addition to all the fish you can see, there are reptiles such as tortoises, anacondas, boas, caimans, tree frogs, and sea turtles. A cafe is located in the entrance area serving light snacks, cakes and drinks. There is also a gift shop, but most things are quite pricey and very few pocket money priced gifts.

Getting there, parking and prices The aquarium is located in the centre of the city alongside the waterfront. As we thought it would either be tricky or expensive to park close by, we decided to get the L1 Metro line from the outskirts were there was plenty of free underground parking and into Puerta Jerez metro station. From here it was about a 10-15 minute scenic walk along the river. www.metro-sevilla.es/en An adult ticket is €15, children 4 -14 and over sixty fives €10, children under 4 are free. Opening times Surprising it´s open 365 days a year! Open from 10.00am until between 7.00pm and 10.00pm depending on the day and season. www.acuariosevilla.es 6 - Inland Solutions Magazine - June/July Junio/Julio 2015

Price of butano gas bottles down again as from 19th May 2015 Since 19th May, the regular 12,5 kg gas bottles should be sold for 14,12 euros, another significant decrease in price, since the first one in March of this year. This price will stand till the third Tuesday in July, when the new price for the following 2 months will be published. This will not vary more than 5% up or down, however, as determined in the regulations. For the past two revisions (both around 10% decrease in price) they have made an exception, because of the significant decrease in prices internationally. The new price for gas bottles of 12,5 kgs is nationwide, all suppliers.

A crazy but true tale of Caribbean football by Stuart Govier Can there have ever been a more unusual ending to a football match than the last few minutes of a Shell Caribbean Cup match between Barbados and Grenada in 1994? Going into the last game of the group stages Barbados needed to beat Grenada by two clear goals to qualify for the finals. Anything less than that and Grenada would progress to the knock out stages of the tournament. So far, so simple, except that in their divine wisdom the organisers had decided that, in the case of a drawn game each match would be decided by a period of extra time and the winner determined by a golden goal which would count as two goals. The winners would then be given a nominal 2-0 victory. To be fair you don’t have to be Stephen Hawking to work out what was to be an inevitable situation at some point in the tournament. Barbados raced to a 2-0 lead in the final game of the group before Grenada made it 2-1 with seven minutes remaining. The Bajans were heading out of the competition unless they either scored a goal themselves making it 3-1 or if the scores were to become level then they would give themselves a chance at going through via the golden goal in extra time. There followed the farcical situation of Bajan defender Eyre Sealy and keeper Horace Stoute knocking the ball to each other in their own goalmouth unchallenged by any Grenadian players and then whacking the ball into the unguarded net for the equaliser. Of course now the Grenadians kicked off and had three minutes to score a goal, any goal would do. If they scored then they won 3-2 but if they scored an own goal then they lost 3-2 and still progressed to the next round. The Bajans then divided their players and proceeded to defend both their own and their opponents goal lines to stop the Grenadians scoring at either end. This they managed to do successfully until the final whistle. With the gathered crowd both

restless and quizzical as to what on earth was going on the match moved into extra time and normality could resume with both sides going for a proper win. Just four minutes into the extra period Barbados scored the golden goal via Thorne and wild celebrations and laughter ensued in the National Stadium in Bridgetown. Barbados had triumphed, qualified for the Finals against the odds and used the rules to their advantage, but was it really football as it should be played? Afterwards the Grenadian coach James Clarkson could only provide an understandably bitter version of the typical ‘sick as a parrot’ comment on proceedings. "I feel cheated," he said. "The person who came up with these rules must be a candidate for the madhouse. The game should never be played with so many players on the field confused. Our players did not even know which direction to attack: Our goal or their goal. I have never seen this happen before. In football, you are supposed to score against the opponents to win, not for them," he added.

The current Grenada FA President, Cheney Joseph, played for Grenada that day in 1994 and was interviewed about the events many years later. He was asked what it was like to take part in one of the weirdest and most talked about matched in football history. “First of all we came to this tournament not knowing of these rules which were presented to us on arrival, our initial thoughts were this is not a problem to us since we anticipated easily getting past our opponents. However, the confusion turned to reality when prior to the start of our game the strategies needed to come into play. Unfortunately the strategy was only discussed between the coach (former Commissioner of Police James Clarkson) and myself. I will admit we applied the strategy without further discussing with the other players so you can imagine the chaos and confusion on the field. Some of our players were mad at me, when they saw we had outright opportunities to score against Barbados but instead I opted to run with the ball towards my goalkeeper. It remains the weirdest match I will ever play in my life. I cannot imagine another ever coming around in my lifetime”. The final seven minutes were full of confusion as Grenada scored to make the score 2-1 and were poised to qualify. “In that period all I was hoping we would keep

the score line just as it was, there was not enough time to discuss with the players so I had to think for all of the others and you can imagine the confusion. Added to this misery, the entire Barbados team had discussed the scenario the night before and unfortunately we did not. Thinking back, there must be some blame placed on all of us as well as the match officials and organizers. There was no fair play. Luck was not on our side that day. We could have easily defeated Barbados by at least two clear goals in regulation time.” After the game he was understandably a tad upset at exiting the competition in such a bizarre fashion. “We were all devastated, to say the least.”

Interesting Articles

However, this isn't the only example of a blatant own goal being scored to further a team's ambitions. It also happened 4 years later in the 1998 Tiger Cup game between Thailand and Indonesia. Whoever won the match would face the hot favourites Vietnam in the next round the losers getting an easier tie in the semi finals against Singapore. So both teams tried to throw the match, at 2-2 and with a few minutes left, the Indonesians dropped all pretence and turned on their own goal, now defended by the opposition Thai players. In injury time the Indonesian Captain and defender Mursyid Effendi 'stopped' the ball, turned round and thumped the ball into his own goal for a 3-2 final result. Justice was eventually served, however. Both teams went on to lose their semi-final games (to Singapore and Vietnam, respectively) and both were also fined $40,000 for "violating the spirit of the game." Meanwhile Mursyid Effendi was banned for life.

Winter in Penang by Trish Aspden Penang is an island state of Malaysia in S.E. Asia, only 5 degrees north of the equator. This gives it a tropical climate, with temperatures throughout the year varying only by a few degrees (23-30C) and an average daily temperature of 26-27C. The rainy season is September to October but in other months, there can be occasional thunderstorms with torrential downpours and dramatic lightning displays. But it soon dries again! The name Penang derives from the Malay word for “Betel nut (pinang). This nut tree is endemic to the island and is an emblem of Penang, taking pride of place on the state flag. The population consists of a highly diverse mix of ethnicity, culture, language and religion. The residents number around 1.6 million but this figure is swollen by visitors, particularly during the many festivals, the main ones being Christmas, New Year, Thaipusam, and Chinese New Year. Penang is a firm favourite with people living in Kuala Lumpur which is situated on the mainland and only a 40 minute flight away. A few sentences about its more recent history will go towards explaining its diversity. On 11 August 1786, Captain Francis Light, working partly for the British East India Company, landed on Penang and claimed the island in the name of King George III (Penang's capital is called George Town). The Sultan of Kedah leased the land to the British E.I.C. In return for protection from the Siamese and Burmese armies. So, Penang became Britain's first settlement in S.E. Asia giving a strategic base from which they could keep watch on the Dutch and also offering an ideal trading location and deep water harbour. The spice trade flourished and George Town became a bustling centre attracting traders from all over the world. Soon, there were communities of Malays, Chinese, Indians, Armenians, British, Japanese, Germans etc. legend has it that Francis Light attracted immigrants by firing silver dollars from his ships' cannons deep into the jungle and promising them as much land as they could clear. Fast forward to 1941 when, during World War II, Penang, after heavy bombardment, fell to the Japanese and the British withdrew to Singapore. Under occupation, there was widespread hunger, fear and massacres which targeted local chinese. After Japan's surrender, the British once again took command on 5 September 1945. However, this was short-lived and the Federation of Malaya was formed in 1948 leading ultimately to independence in 1957. In recent years Penang has become a magnet for high-tech electronics plants with well-known companies (e.g. Dell, Motorola, Osram, Intel) establishing manufacturing bases in the south of the island. Other important sectors are tourism, finance & shipping.

Amongst many points in its favour as a winter holiday destination is the fact that English is widely spoken – even though, for instance, Malay, Mandarin or Hokkein may be their first language, they invariably can speak enough English to help with directions or carry on a conversation. The Penangites' favourite question is “Where are you from?” if you mention UK, then the conversation flows to everything British – football, pop music, cities, weather!! They are very friendly and helpful people. The main holiday resort is Batu Ferringhi where there is a long beach backed by hotels, bars, large foodcourts, smaller cafes and up-market restaurants. As you might guess, there's a great choice of nationalities where food is concerned. It is reasonably priced and excellent quality. Alcohol is more expensive than in Spain but not quite at UK prices. In 2014 Penang was named top food destination in the world by Lonely Planet. There are lots of interesting places to visit ; so much so that it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Indian and Chinese temples, museums, forts, spice gardens, tropical fruit farms, restored Chinese mansions etc The Channel 4 TV series “Indian Summers” is , in fact, filmed mostly in Penang as there are so many beautifully restored colonial buildings. Many flight operators fly into Kuala Lumpur hub from major airports and Turkish Airlines operate from Malaga to KL via Istanbul. It's quite a long journey with a total of 14 hours flying time but well worth it once you get there. Interesting Articles

Warm every day – relax on the beach or round the pool; visit interesting heritage sites; shop in the malls; watch the latest films (in English) and enjoy the food. Not forgetting the convenience of Tesco's delivery service right to the door of your apartment! A recommended place to pass the winter months.

Pepi’s Page

On his way to dinner last week, a man in Thailand noticed a group of stray dogs fighting over a bundle left in the street. What he discovered was quite shocking. The bundle was an abandoned newborn baby. Noi Pongsakorn stopped to investigate when he saw a familiar stray dog whom he regularly would feed, begin to intervene on the group of rowdy canines. He had named the yellow Lab mix Nom Sod, which translates to fresh milk. Nom Sod stuck her nose into the fray, growled at the other dogs and quickly picked up the bundle. When Mr. Pongsakorn showed Nom Sod a stick she gently laid the prize at his feet. “At the time I didn’t think it was a baby and thought it was a doll, until I heard it crying and walked closer to Nom Sod,” he said. Imagine his surprise when he discovered the four-and-a-half-pound baby girl whose skin looked to be a pale shade of green with bite and scratch marks on her body. She appeared to be a premature infant who was still breathing, so Pongsakorn called for help. When police and paramedics arrived they tended to the infant and transported her to safety. Police Colonel Chuthares Yingyongdamrongsakul rewarded Nom Sod by buying her a collar and bringing her some grilled chicken to eat. Stray Animals Worldwide The problem of stray companion animals is a huge issue for all countries. Strays are usually not vaccinated, carry the risk of rabies, leave excrement on streets and sidewalks, and cause traffic accidents. They are forced to scavenge for food and will invade dumpsters and landfills to survive. Some kind souls, like Mr. Pongsakorn, will feed the abandoned animals and provide water but this doesn’t solve the root of the issue. There are animal advocates who try and rescue these street dogs and find them loving adoptive homes, but when a person living in poverty has to choose between feeding their children and feeding a pet, not a lot of animals find those forever homes. The Human-Canine Bond Isn’t it amazing that, even in a tragic situation like Nom Sod saving the premie from other street dogs and relinquishing her to a human she is familiar with, the human-canine bond is so evident?

20 - Inland Solutions Magazine - June/July Junio/Julio 2015

Dogs, for better or worse, are dependent upon humans, and not just for food and shelter; love and attention from a human is necessary for a pup’s happiness, too. They know us so well, read our emotions and moods, and will always reach out to help with whatever we need. Pleasing their human is who they are. A creature who is so willing to give their love, needs it returned. Why can’t humans understand that and act on it? The Baby The fate of the baby is unknown at this time. Some local residents reported seeing a woman on a motorcycle near where the baby was left about 30 minutes before Nom Sod saved the tiny person. Security footage shows a woman who the police believe is the baby’s mother. Hopefully the baby will heal and thrive and find an adoptive home. Nom Sod As for Nom Sod, residents are hoping her remarkable feat will bring her adoption offers. One can hope! She certainly deserves a good and loving home. I know a refuge is not a home but at least I'm safe and sound, Then when someone wants a special friend, I'll be homeward bound.

A white rose for Richard By Jenny Whiteley

“RIII with dignity and honour” said the message. It was attached to the stem of a creamy white rose, still tight in bud. A white rose of York for a Yorkist king. You can’t go empty-handed to visit a king. Tuesday 24th March dawned bright and sunny in Hampshire but the forecast for the Midlands was cloudy and cold. Wrapped in winter coats, scarves, gloves and comfortable shoes and armed with umbrellas, sandwiches and a good book we set off on a two hour car journey, prepared to queue for hours outside Leicester Cathedral, so we could pay our respects to England’s last Plantagenet King. The story of the “King in the car park” has captured the imagination of people all over the world. If it had not been for the passion of one woman, Philippa Langley, the bones of one of England’s most notorious kings might still be lying under that car park. The discovery of the King’s remains and the research that proved that the skeleton is indeed that of Richard III are tremendous achievements for archaeology and Leicester University. We had followed the progress of the archaeology with interest from a distance over the years and when we learned that the coffin containing the remains of King Richard III were to lie in state for three days before his re-burial, we thought this is a unique historical event that we wanted to be part of. Richard III is arguably England’s most maligned monarch. For four hundred years his reputation has been the one donated to him by Shakespeare: the hunchback who murdered the Princes in the Tower, his own nephew, mere children. The facts remain a mystery but Richard is the prime suspect in their murder.

curvature of the spine, but this condition would not have prevented him being an able fighter. He would not have had a limp and a good tailor would have been able to disguise the difference in the height of his shoulders. Was Richard really any worse than any of his forebears? Killing close family and friends in the interests of gaining and keeping the crown is a repetitive theme throughout history. Henry IV usurped Richard II. Edward II was forced to abdicate in favour of his son. Both deposed kings later died in mysterious circumstances. This year, 800 years since Magna Carta, we recall another English monarch with a bad reputation, King John. Those of us who grew up with the legend of Robin Hood, Maid Marion and the Sheriff of Nottingham are familiar with “Bad” King John and “Good” King Richard. History has remembered John for his faults, yet it has been unduly kind to his brother, the Lion Heart, a ruthless warrior who spoke almost no English, hardly ever stepped foot in the country and bankrupted the Exchequer with his crusading zeal. As we drove into the Leicester, following the brown tourist signs for “Richard III”, the queue for the cathedral came into view intermittently. We found the cathedral easily and made our way to the end of the queue. A bus pulled up and almost immediately the queue lengthened behind us. We were told it was about a two hour wait. We took out our books and began to read. The queue moved steadily. It rained for a few minutes and there was some hail, but spirits were good. After an hour we reached the former grammar school, now a part of the cathedral, and I needed to put my gloves on. We chatted with other people in the queue.

We now know that Richard III suffered from

Many local people came out of a sense of pride in their city and rightly so, for Leicester has done a wonderful job. The cathedral has undergone major alterations to accommodate the tomb and the atmosphere around the cathedral was one of welcome to all the visitors.

Suddenly we were outside again. We did not stop to take photographs, say a prayer or even take a moment of reflection at the coffin, yet we came away with the sense that we had witnessed a moment when the fifteenth century had met the twenty-first.

Opposite the cathedral, on the site of the very car park where the King’s remains were found, a new museum has been built. On the ground floor visitors are introduced to the Battle of Bosworth and the life and times of Richard III. Upstairs, there is a comprehensive exhibition on the dig. Much space is devoted to the research carried out on the remains, including the family tree showing Richard’s link to the surviving relatives who provided the DNA that proved his identity. Finally, in the basement, you can view the trench, left as it was excavated, with lighting indicating the position of the bones. At a modest price of £7.95 the museum is an essential part of any Richard III itinerary.

After almost two hours we finally entered the cathedral. Channel 4, which had followed the dig from the outset, were somewhere in the rafters filming. Florists were busy creating wonderful mediaeval-style floral decorations. There were people up ladders, and cables running in all directions. The queue was silent and respectful but we were kept moving at a steady pace. There was no time to stop; thousands of people were behind us, all wanting to be where we were. A florist with an armful of white roses stepped forward to accept my rose. We moved into a darker corner where the simple wooden coffin stood, draped in a beautifully embroidered pall. Four men stood at each corner, heads-bowed in respect.

Recipe

Crunchy, Colourful ‘Confetti’ Coleslaw for BBQ Season Cabbage is an underappreciated veggie in my opinion. It’s super nutritious, affordable, local to pretty much everywhere, and, most importantly, delicious. This coleslaw is a wonderful crispy-crunchy mix of cabbage and carrots with a nice little zing from the vinegar and just the right mix of salty and sweet.

Confetti Coleslaw Serves 4-6 as a side salad

Ingredients * 1/2 head cabbage, core removed, thinly sliced * 2-3 carrots, peeled and shredded on a box grater * 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced

For the dressing * 1/3 cup mayonnaise * 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar * 1 Tbsp honey * 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard * 1-2 tsps caraway seed, crushed (I use a mortar and pestle to rough them up some but you can certainly leave them whole if you prefer that) * 1-2 tsps sea salt * 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper

Directions Place the grated and shredded vegetables in a medium bowl. Whisk the dressing together in a small bowl or glass until smooth then pour over the vegetables and stir to make sure everything is well-coated before serving. Store in a container with a tight-fitting lid in the refrigerator.

Cuentos

Fin. Paco Sánchez Arjona.

Harry's Secret, Part 2 That afternoon, Harry had come down to the lake for the first time after the death of his mother. His father was working, and he went out for a walk with his dog. After the accident, Harry had not come down to the lake; his soul ached at the mere thought of sitting by the shore without his mother. Not many days ago, each afternoon, Harry and his mother used to go for a walk with his dog; they would walk down the trail, arrive at the lake and sit down by the shore, take off their shoes and let the water cover their feet. But after the accident, Harry was incapable of coming back to the lake...until that afternoon; the German shepherd started running in front of him and did not stop until reaching the exact place where he and Joanne were sitting now, where he would always sit with his mother. His dog had sat down and waved its tail and stared at Harry. Then the boy patted its back, ears, face...and the German shepherd started barking towards a definite spot in the water, a spot right in front of them. That afternoon, for the first time, Harry saw his mother's face reflected in the water. He wanted to hug her...but he immediately realized that you cannot hug water. He tried several times, but he only managed to feel sadder. He started hitting the water, to curse it for mocking him in such a cruel way. When he did not have any strength left in him, he sat again by the shore, sank his head between his knees and cried in anger. But, when he lifted his head, the waters were calm again and he could see his mother's face reflected in the lake, just in front of him. He wanted to get in the water again, but waves deformed his mother's face. Only then did Harry understand that he could only look at her...and started to accept that he could never hug her again. After that day, Harry went down to the lake to spend a moment with his mother each afternoon. But he had not told anyone, that had been his secret until Joanne sat next to him by the shore. Harry and Joanne looked at each other. Then, they held each other's hands...and a smile was etched on a face reflected in the waters of the lake. The End. Paco SĂĄnchez Arjona.

Stories

Harry took forever to reply; at least that is what Joanne thought. "My mother – finally" said Harry with a sorrowful lilt in his voice. Joanne stared in silence, not knowing what to say, not daring to say anything. And then she understood why Harry went down to the lake every afternoon. She remembered him walking down the trail, with only his dog for company; and she imagined him there, alone, sitting by the shore, looking at an imaginary face reflected in the water, smiling to his mother...feeling that she looked at him through the waters of the lake. Then and only then did Joanne think about moving to a new house and to a new city every year. It is not the worst thing that could happen to someone who has not yet turned twelve. Joanne touched Harry's shoulder and he turned to her. Harry's eyes were full of tears and Joanne wanted to hug him, but she did not know how to hug a boy who makes you feel butterflies in your stomach when he looks at you. And Harry wanted to hug her, but he felt embarrassed for not knowing how to do it; he had hugged other girls, but Joanne was different, he thought. The others did not make him feel tickles in his heart. For a brief but endless moment, both of them looked at each other without saying a word...telling each other more than can be said with words. Then Harry looked at the water again and Joanne mimicked him. "Why am I the only one able to see her? " asked Harry without lifting his gaze from the water. "Because you do not see her with your eyes..." Harry looked at her without understanding. "You look at her from here " said Joanne touching his chest where his heart was. Harry smiled. He would have never imagined such an answer; that was the answer he would have chosen to hear...if he had been able to imagine it. They remained silent for an instant. Then she asked him "When was the first time that you saw her?" "A few days after the accident... "

Fuente de Piedra

Flamingoes On The Roundabout Glorieta De Los Flamingos Welcome to Fuente de Piedra and a taste of what it has to offer when entering the village from all directions. At long last the main roundabout into the village now has a tribute to the beautiful Laguna and Flamingos that live and breed there. I do think there´s plenty of room to add a few more flamingos or other species found at the Laguna just for good measure and to make it a little more interesting. Who knows "poco a poco" as they say may develop into something a little more "Grande". It´s definitely a big thumbs up from me.
