Diwali, or the “Festival of Lights”, is the celebration of the New Year in Hindu culture. This month, it will be celebrated in the barrio of Lavapiés, and is open to everyone. IV Interactive Kids Fun Ideas Fair Hello, Hola, Bonjour, Hallo! The Kids Fun Ideas Fair on 8 October is a must for parents in Madrid looking to encourage their children to develop a second language in fun ways, and make new friends at the same time. The programme, aimed at children ages 0-12, includes a broad range of activities and entertainment, including language workshops, theatre, magic, storytelling, music, crafts, and gymnastics, as well as contests, raffles and more. Madrid Gothic Week Indulge in all things gothic! El Ojo Cojo Film Festival El Ojo Cojo, an NGO which promotes diversity and campaigns against racism and intolerance, is holding its annual Film Festival for shorts and features from all over the world, ranging from documentaries to animation. The festival’s goal is to promote cultural and social integration of marginalised groups, and to present high-quality movies that do not usually reach a Spanish audience. Semana de la Arquitectura A highly anticipated event for architecture fans, “Architecture Week” is staged by the architecture school of Madrid, and allows people to experience a more in-depth view of the city’s buildings. Tips from the Tower Helpful monthly advice from the British Consulate office in Pº de la Castellana’s Torre Espacio You’ve recently arrived to start a new life in Spain and you’ve heard that there are quite a few documents that you will need to get hold of from the Spanish authorities. Where should you start? You’ll be pleased to learn that one of the most essential documents is also one of the most straightforward to obtain. It’s called the empadronamiento, which is basically a registration with the local council, a bit like being on the electoral roll in the UK. All you need to register is an address in Madrid. Appointments can be booked online at your nearest council office—see www.munimadrid.es—and all you need to take is your passport as ID and proof of address (usually your rental contract or utility bill) in order to complete a short form. The service is free and you walk away with the all-important volante del padrón. This certificate gives you access to a whole new world of possibilities—you’ll need it, amongst other things, to get the residency certificate from the Oficina de Extranjeros, to register with a doctor and access a whole host of other public services such as classes at local cultural centres. It can also help get you access to certain benefits in Spain.

The Sinister Six Blood, bones, and bloopers are exposed as Jessica Ruiz selects six Spanish B movies—the best of the worst— that you should seek out this Halloween

he Spanish horror genre has taken on international recognition in recent years.

You would be hard-pressed to find somebody who hasn’t seen or heard of The Others, The Orphanage or REC I and II, all of which garnered widespread acclaim and were box-office hits. But when a horror movie is produced with boundless enthusiasm, but only a negligible budget, the results can be by turns disastrous and hilarious. To bring you a selection of such rarities, we have explored the underbelly of Spanish horror cinema, and discovered cinematic treasures that will undoubtedly make you scream, although more likely with laughter and disbelief than fear and fright.

find out who is responsible for the brutal murders of several women, it becomes clear that he is no ordinary murderer—he has supernatural powers.

Fun fact: This movie is virtually impossible to find. The Filmoteca has a battered copy of it, but the quality is so bad that it’s unfit for screening. This has made it one of the most coveted films of the Spanish B movie genre among enthusiasts.

El sonido de la muerte (Sound of Horror)

Miguel Madrid, 1975 El asesino de muñecas is introduced by director Miguel Madrid, who waxes lyrical about criminal psychopathology while dismembering and beheading a squeaky doll. Thus begins the story of our protagonist: Paul.

During the day, Paul suffers from a debilitating aversion to blood, which is interesting considering his shattered dreams of becoming a cardiovascular surgeon. But at night, he dons a mask and goes on killing sprees dressed as a woman, although in his mind the women he murders are lifeless mannequins.

This makes for some interesting cinematography when we see Paul “Oh my God! Call my agent—I need to get out of this movie!” in drag stabbing mannequins left and right between one of his favourite directors. Don’t miss the sequel, dream sequences and dance parties.

Killer Barbys vs Dracula.

Jose Antonio Nieves Conde, 1965 A group of treasure hunters find a cave full of Nazi remains and awaken a mysterious beast—an invisible dinosaur, the sound of which gives the film its title.

This movie is a perfect example of the creativity that emerges when the budget is low. After all, what could be easier and cheaper than creating a monster that you can’t see? Genius. As the American trailer for the film says: “You will shiver and shake. Quiver and quake”.

Fun fact: See if you can spot the ever-stylish, famous Spanish actor Arturo Fernández in the role of Professor André.

Los monstruos del terror (Assignment Terror or Dracula versus Frankenstein) Hugo Fregonese, 1970 When Planet Ummo becomes endangered, the aliens who inhabit it cook up a cunning plan. They will conquer the Earth by bringing back two scientists who in turn will revive a werewolf, Frankenstein’s monster, Count Dracula, and a mummy. This quadrumvirate of horror proves to be less helpful than the aliens had planned. The verdict? Considering it was shot in six days by three different directors, this is actually an excellent film. See our June edition for a “Made in Madrid” feature about this remarkable movie.

Fun fact: Although the film claims Dracula and Frankenstein, their names are never mentioned, in order to avoid copyright expenses. Frankenstein is instead called Faransan.

El espectro del terror (The Spectre of Terror) Jose María Elorrieta, 1973 Charly is a drug-addicted, sex-crazed, Vietnam vet who works in an airport laundromat and routinely harrasses stewardesses. He is a psychopath and a misogynist to boot, and when the police open an investigation to

El asesino de muñecas (Killing of the Dolls)

Killer Barbys Jess Franco, 1996 This movie is like Spiceworld, but instead of the Spice Girls you have the Killer Barbys, a Spanish rock band whose album titles include Big Muff and Sin is In, and instead of high fashion and VIP parties, you have blood, gore and nudity! When the band’s van breaks down while on tour, they are forced to spend the night at Countess Olga’s castle. Little do they know that the secret of the Countess’s youthful appearance is bathing in the blood of the young. The film is directed by none other than the prolific Jess Franco, a master of the B movie whom John Waters recently described as being

Ellos robaron la picha de Hitler (They Stole Hitler’s Wiener/They Pinched Hitler’s Pecker) Pedro Temboury, 2006 If the title isn’t enough to reel you in, the plot surely will. Hitler’s secret bunker is discovered, and within it, in an urn, his (improbably intact) penis. When Dr Weissman of Torremolinos gets wind of this, he gathers a group of neo-Nazis who are willing to risk their lives to purloin the Führer’s bratwurst in order to clone from it an army of Adolfs.

Fun fact: Cult film director Jess Franco stars, at the ripe age of 80, as Weissman’s father, who appears to him in visions.

Founded in 1902, it was given its regal title in 1920 by Alfonso XIII, the King of Spain. The club has won the UEFA Champions League (formerly the European Cup) nine times, more than any other team in the competition’s history. It’s also the world’s most popular club, with an estimated 228 million fans worldwide, more than 34 times the city’s population.

In recent years Real has struggled against the dominance of Spain’s other great football club, Barcelona, having finished second to its Catalan rivals for the last three seasons. But with José Mourinho still at the helm and a number of new signings, expectations remain high. El Clásico, the fixture between the two giants, takes place at the Bernabéu on Sunday 11 December.

The team has a varied history of success and heartbreak, which is why its fans are often known as Los Suffradors, or The Sufferers.

Famously playing in red and white stripes, there are numerous tales about Atlético’s striking uniform choice. When the club was established, the traditional colouring of mattress-lining material was a similar pattern, hence the nickname The Mattress Makers, whilst another claim is that after the First World War, English club Sunderland donated its previous season’s shirts to the team, and in honour of the gesture Atlético has played in the same colours ever since.

The origins of the club are disputed—there was a football side in the Madrid suburb during the mid-1920s, but it was gone a decade later. Getafe as we know it today was founded in 1945 by five prominent residents in the area, who decided to form a local team around a bar where they met to drink. One year later the club was registered as an official side, with its offices based at the Bar Hispano.

In 1982, after spending six years in the Spanish second division, the club was relegated and went out of business. Ordinary people, extraordinary times This month sees the 75th anniversary of the formation of the first International Brigades, units of volunteers created to fight for the Republic in the Spanish Civil War. Justin Byrne looks at the Brigades’ story, and at the events to mark the occasion

onsidered by many to embody the highest ideals of humanity, by others to be agents of Soviet Russia, the estimated 35,000 foreign volunteers who came to fight for the Republic in the Spanish Civil War continue to inspire debate and passion today. They came from more than 50 countries, as near as France, Poland, Germany, Italy and Portugal, and as distant as China and Argentina, to serve in the International Brigades, created on the initiative of the Moscow-controlled Communist International movement in October 1936.

English-speaking countries were well-represented. Small contingents came from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and Canada, more than 2,000 from Britain, and another 2,800 from the United States, including almost 100 female nurses. The units were often named after national or political heroes of the volunteers’ home countries, and the presence of a number of African-Americans in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade made it the first racially integrated military unit in US history and the first in which black officers commanded white troops.

Talks, films, a concert and the inauguration of a new monument are just some of the events planned to celebrate the anniversary, and with just a few volunteers left alive, none of whom are under 90 years old, this will almost certainly be the last major tribute for these legendary anti-fascists in their lifetimes.

Life and losses Around a quarter of all the volunteers are thought to have died in Spain and thousands more were wounded. The International Brigades fought on the frontline in each and every one of the great battles of the Civil War, from the siege of Madrid in November-December 1936, where the first Brigaders went into action on the campus of the Complutense University in Moncloa, through to the Battle of the Ebro in the summer of 1938.

Most volunteers had no military experience and little training, and units were often led by officers appointed on political as much as military grounds. They suffered as much as others from the ever-greater shortage of weapons and supplies that played such a decisive role in the defeat of the Republic, but they quickly earned a reputation as some of the toughest units, respected for their motivation and discipline. Republican commanders knew that they could be relied on. Some Brigades complained that they were being treated as cannon fodder, and some dreamed of going home. Others, however, described their withdrawal in October 1938, in a futile bid by the Republican government to force Hitler and Mussolini to end their help for the rebels, as one of the saddest days of their lives, matched only by how they felt four months later when Franco sealed his victory.

Who and why The majority of those who came to Spain were ordinary people, often in their teens or early twenties, whether students, workers or unemployed.

British veteran David Lomon (originally Solomon) is now 92 years old, but he arrived in Spain in December 1937, aged just 19, and his story is typical of many Brigaders.

The son of Jewish migrants from Poland, he became politicized in his teens during the fight against Oswald Mosley (founder of the British fascist movement) and the Blackshirts in London’s East End. He soon joined the Young Communist League, and as Lomon recently explained to historian Richard Baxwell, his decision to go to Spain was a continuation of his anti-fascist activism. “I wanted to do something,” he recalled, “I wanted to fight fascism.” Volunteers hoped their presence would help force the democratic powers, led by Britain, France and the USA, to reverse their policy of non-intervention in the Spanish conflict.

Having travelled via Paris, then struggling through the Pyrenees at night in order to avoid the French police, on arrival in Spain, Lomon changed his obviously Jewish surname to avoid being singled out if captured. He was wise to do so, as after just minimal training as a machine gunner and a few weeks on the Aragon front, he was taken prisoner by

Italian soldiers and held in one of the concentration camps set up by the Francoists near Burgos. He was repatriated to Britain in October 1938 and was lucky to return relatively unscathed. Health permitting, he hopes to be back in Madrid for the anniversary events.

Post-war The Brigaders may have lost the battle against fascism in Spain, but many, including Lomon who served in the Royal Navy, took up arms again in the Second World War and were able to celebrate the defeat of fascism in Europe in 1945. What they could not imagine is that they would have to wait another 30 years for the end of Franco’s dictatorship, and another 20 more until they received recognition for their act of selfless solidarity from democratic Spain. This came in 1996, when the surviving veterans were granted Spanish citizenship, and hundreds of them returned to a heroes’ welcome. Twenty thousand people filled the Palacio de Deportes for an emotive concert, and thousands more greeted them in Barcelona, the scene of their famous farewell parade almost 60 years earlier.

Divisions Given that the Civil War and historical memory still divide Spanish society, it is hardly surprising that mixed opinions about the International Brigades still remain. For critics, the Communist control meant that the Brigades were mere pawns of Moscow in its alleged plans for a Soviet-style takeover in Spain, and the Brigaders more or less conscious Communist stooges, tainted by the worst crimes of Stalinism.

The Asociación de Amigos de las Brigadas Internacionales (AABI) and the other organizations responsible for this month’s events see things differently. They are convinced that the “volunteers for freedom” picked the right side in the Civil War, by defending a democratically-elected government against a military rebellion. Equally important, they believe that the brigadistas represent an outstanding example of idealism, activism and internationalism in a progressive cause that should serve as continued inspiration for present and future generations.

Whatever you think about the Civil War, the ideological struggles of the 20th century, or politics today, at the most basic human level it is difficult not to be impressed by the Brigades and the spirit of those passionate times. The volunteers were ordinary people who were willing and able to act in an extraordinary way, leaving their family, friends, studies or careers to risk their lives in a war that was not their own. It is this that makes the Brigaders’ individual and collective stories of self-sacrifice so compelling, as relevant today as ever before, and which provides reason enough to share in the unique tribute this month.

Tapping into Madrid’s finest watering holes

What: A lively, trendy and slightly bohemian bar, Café Galdós hosts live music, art and photography exhibitions and DJ sets. Striking marble columns and a large mural give the place character, and the oldfashioned coffee tables are suggestive of a 19th century literary café. Towards the back of the bar there is a more intimate room where you can dance to the rhythms that the bands and DJs have to offer. The music adds to the bar’s lively atmosphere but doesn’t inhibit conversation, making it an ideal spot to kick off a night out.

People: At weekends, a mixed crowd with a variety of ages, mostly Spanish. Those who pop in for a chat over a caña don’t feel out of place alongside those dancing with a mojito in hand. Weekdays, expect the local working contingent too.

Food & Drinks: At Café Galdós they pride themselves on their cocktails and the chopping board and knife behind the bar assure you that old favourites will be carefully crafted with fresh ingredients. Prices range from €8-10. What really sets the bar apart, though, is its remarkable Gin & Tonic menu. The speciality gins come from all over the world and are made using complex and innovative methods. Different tonics are suggested based on how well they complement each gin and different slices of fruit are used depending on each drink. Although it’s the most expensive on the list, the G’Vine, served in a glass full of ice and with a slice of grapefruit, is stunning and has to be sampled.

At lunchtimes, there’s an excellent value menú del día for €9.60 or a half menu for €6.

Music: On weeknights the music is carefully selected but if it’s live stuff you’re after, then come to Café Galdós at the weekends, when the bar makes a real effort to promote live music. There are a variety of acts worth seeing, with performances spanning genres such as pop, acoustic and jazz. The entry fee is usually around the €7 mark with a free drink. For the first red of autumn, we’re venturing beyond the borders of Spain. Not because there’s any shortage of wines here, but because there are just so many out there that we felt it wrong to continue ignoring them. Besides, October’s lukewarm evenings call for a red on the lighter side, and Spain admittedly falls short in that category to some of her neighbours. So we looked to Italy, specifically its smallest wine sub-region, the DOC Vallée d’Aosta in the northwest of the country known as Piemonte. There, 60 growers around the villages of Arnad and Montjovet that form the co-operative La Kiuva tend small plots of the indigenous red grape Nebbiolo, another local varietal Dolcetto, and the French grape Pinot Noir. All three thrive in northern climes, and produce intensity and depth in wine. Italian wines typically burst with personality, and we found quite an interesting one hiding in the little Valley of Aosta.

Appearance Light, almost pale brick-red, with a rusty, oxidized earth colour at the edges. The colour indicates light weight and body, while the hue seems to suggest a wine with a bit more age.

Aroma An interesting bouquet of fruit includes redcurrant, cherry and stewed strawberry, but there’s a definite acidic aroma that smells like farm apple cider. The scent of old cedar wood adds to the complexity.

Taste You’re immediately struck by the combination of light body and big flavour. Wildberries mix with the fruit of the bouquet, while a strong acidic presence makes your mouth and tongue water. A copper minerality enhances both the fruit and acid. As you continue to sip, smooth fruit tannins (coming from the high skin-to-pulp ratio of the small Nebbiolo grapes) accumulate, leaving a palatable impression and showing that, along with the integrated flavours and acid backbone, this is a well-crafted and structural wine. All this becomes even more compelling when you consider how light and refreshing the wine is. While something from the sun-baked vineyards outside Murcia might exhaust, this alpine Nebbiolo enlivens.

Try it with Cheeses, meat-sauce pastas or oysters. Anything really spicy will overpower the wine, and anything super light won’t stand up to all that’s going on in the glass. Try fish with butter sauces to see how the acidity cuts through the rich sauce, or pork with apples to bring out those cider aromas. Briney fare like raw oysters could match perfectly with the minerality of the wine. Steak tartare might be the perfect pairing.

Final thoughts Like Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo leaves some people unimpressed, dissatisfied and wondering what causes all the fuss. But when its qualities are brought out by the right producer in the right climate, disparate ■ THOMAS SPAETH body, flavour and structure can still achieve balance; it’s both fascinating and delightful.

Ry Cooder Pull Up Some Dust And Sit Down Nonesuch/Perro Verde

Depressingly enough, whenever I’ve been asked the question “Who is Ry Cooder?” (it’s happened a couple of times), I’ve tended to say “He’s that guy who thought up the Buena Vista Social Club”, or words to that effect, tacitly affirming that he’ll always be better known for that than any of his other 30-odd solo records since 1970. But Pull Up Some Dust And Sit Down could be about to change all that, a late career flourish that’s as much a state of the nation address as it is a study in American roots music; the withering put downs against the rich and the mighty sure to put the wind up any God-fearing Wall Street financier. “No Banker Left Behind” is a jaunty country romp that imagines all the bankers everywhere heading off on a train, having conspired to “rob the nation blind.” On “John Lee Hooker For President”, Cooder delivers a hilarious impersonation of the famous bluesman, imagining him running for the office of president of the United States on the pledge that “Everyone gets one bourbon, one scotch, one beer/Three times a day if they stay cool.”

He’s taking aim at the whole political party system, lampooning the perennial tussles between Republicans and Democrats and in the process proving that irony is as good a weapon as anger to get your message across— especially when allied to such superlative songwriting.

Tinariwen Tissali Independiente

The famous Lou Reed quote that “One chord is fine. Two chords is pushing it. Three chords and you’re into jazz”, is a sentiment that desert blues outfit Tinariwen probably agree with. One note, or a single chord, is the foundation of many a Tinariwen song, and with the group’s new long player Tissali this is further pared down. Recorded in a tent in the Algerian desert, the electric guitars of previous outings are largely set aside in favour of a leaner acoustic sound. You can hear the musicians breathing as they gear up to perform; hand drums reverberating alongside syncopated hand claps.

Vocals provide texture, not just a melody, often simply sounding the root note to create a soothing drone like in the sumptuous “Walla Illa”.

Purists will cock a snook at cameos made by Nels Cline of Wilco, who guests on opener “Imidiwan Ma Tennam Tunde” with some nimble guitar playing, and Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio, who provides some lyrics in English, sung in a whispered falsetto, on the excellent “Tenere Taqqim Tossam”, but the music of Tinariwen has never really been traditional. Peaceful, profound and deeply soulful, Tissali is a fine addition to the group’s already burgeoning catalogue.

Nneka’s music is an interesting mix of many genres—soul, hiphop, R&B, Afrobeat, Reggae and Jangle Pop. She grew up in Nigeria, but sings in German and the Nigerian language Igbo.

Deep lyrics about capitalism, poverty and war characterise her music and she reached a wider audience through her 2008 hit “Heartbeat”. The song could be understood as a love song, but is equally a political message about mercy and empathy, a theme which continues to the present day.

These post-rockers from Glasgow have been making music together since 1995. Signed to the Seattlebased Sub Pop Records, echoes of label mates Sonic Youth can be heard in their bass heavy lengthy tracks. They have been previously pinned as makers of monothematic ambient music that is at times quite dark, yet their latest album, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, veers from this stamp and is a little lighter. Any bar with €1 Mahou botellines and a Fifa 99 video game readily available is going to be a winner in my book, but Stereo actually offers a lot more. In fact, this intimate bar, located near Alonso Martínez, offers its customers something a lot of venues in the city are lacking: repose. Stereo is a very unassuming and welcoming place—about as humble and modest as an establishment can be.

The two female English-speaking bartenders greet you with smiles, and gladly wait for you to order as you debate dipping into their extensive selection of spirits or sticking with a reliable beer. The prices are more than reasonable, and you won’t be breaking the bank for a good time. The music is engaging, but not overwhelming, as the DJ mixes anything from electro-indie dubstep and rock to a poppy Feist track, striking a great balance between catering to the needs of people having a conversation and also those looking to burn calories on the dance floor. The vast majority of the tracks are in English. It’s calm and cordial—you won’t find eight stories of sweaty, crazy debauchery here, but Stereo seeks to provide a sought-after alternative—one goes (and goes again) to relax, meet friendly people, listen to good music, and enjoy the night without hindrance, as more than a few native English speakers have already discovered.

Artists used materials that were considered of poor value to question whether art requires money and privatisation. Teotihuacan: City of the Gods. Teotihuacan was a centre of economic, political and social splendour in Mexico during pre-colonial times. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and carries a rich cultural history as one of Mexico’s most important archaeological treasures. Dating from 100 BC to 650 AD, the city is thought to have been inhabited by numerous tribes such as the Totonac, Otomi and Nahua.

Architecture is revealing not only of the designer’s taste but society’s history.

It determines how people move through a specific place and reflects their interpretations of their environment. The Thyssen is hosting more than 140 paintings of urban architecture and its evolution across time.

Spanning the Mediterranean to Northern Europe, works by artists such as Duccio di Buoninsegna, Canaletto, and Tintoretto are on display, depicting their interest in how architecture affects movement and place, as well as their ability to portray it as an art form. The exhibition is actually housed in two locations—works from the 14th to the 17th century are shown at the Thyssen, revealing the religious, historical and mythological influences across city scenes, whilst the Fundación Caja Madrid (Plaza San Martín, 1. Metro: Ópera) houses paintings from the 18th century, by which time the genre was considered independent. In Bed Among the Lentils, one woman’s search for consolation at the bottom of a bottle leads to a new-found relationship, revealing unsuspected facets of God, sex and her own life. A Lady of Letters tells of a woman’s constant need to complain about her wild and unruly neighbours, whose son may be the victim of child abuse, and finally, A Chip in the Sugar, relates the story of a middle-aged man living at home, who has to come to terms with his mother taking up with an old flame. All set in Bennett’s home county of Yorkshire, each character presents a poignant scenario that all of us can relate to or identify with.
