Ten tell-tale signs it’s a bad day on the Metro You get up late, you’ve had no breakfast, and you’ve sprinted to the Metro station. You think things can only get better, but then:

The “easy open” door in the ticket hall is as solid as a brick wall, and your body crumples as you impact against it.

2

You rush to the train doors but they close in your face. You pretend you didn’t really want to get on, but everyone inside is grinning because they know that you did.

3

As the tail end of a train disappears into the tunnel, the “next arrival” board illuminates minutes in double figures.

You manage to get a seat. The people around you start coughing and sneezing as though they should be in an isolation ward.

Musicians brighten the carriage. You smile at them. One approaches for a donation. You nod and smile again. He waits in front of you. You check your bag and pockets, and discover you have no change whatsoever.

You notice a pregnant woman. In perfect Spanish, you say “Please, you’re expecting, would you like my seat?”, then suddenly realise she’s not.

You let go of a hand rail for two seconds. The train stops suddenly and you fly down the centre aisle like the world’s worst acrobat.

When you get off, the “up” escalator isn’t working (but the “down” one is.)

When you try to walk through the exit gate, it’s jammed. The sudden halt is so painful that you wonder if you’ve permanently damaged an internal organ.

Fairy Tales

Dramatisation Being the good Brit that I am, I am not one for confrontations. I pose my demands in a nice, articulated manner and expect the recipient to respond with the same civility. And if everything else fails, I rely on a good old cup of tea to fix the problem. (Is there anything a cuppa can’t solve?)

However, when the solution keeps eluding me, the Frenchman in me takes over. I succumb to depressing chansons and binge on fromage and gateau. It is becoming a problem. Mainly because this is not the way things are done here, in the land of the bullfighters.

The Spaniards like drama. Much like their iconic toreros, dressed in sparkly, highly revealing, tight outfits, they like to play with the beast before slaying it. Where is the fun in an efficient and time-saving approach? Only the Spanish could have come up with an open-air slaughterhouse, fitted with bleachers and a butcher in a penis-exposing jumpsuit. Their world is a stage. Sevillanas wear bright polka dot dresses. Women beat their chest with abanicos (fans) on the underground. And I’m not mentioning the authoritarian gaze of flamenco dancers and the silencing of their stomping. The Spaniards enjoy drama, or to be more accurate, dramatisation.

A dramatisation that is especially present in their TV programmes. Programmes such as Sálvame, where members of the panel, in between feverously discussing the latest gossip with exuberated rage mocking as passion, spontaneously leave the set and reappear in fancy dress or simply stand up and shake their stuff.

So in a country where everything is a show, where a sensible compromise cannot be reached without a bit of cape waving and loud altercations, what is a reserved and well-mannered Brit to do? Is one actually supposed to speak one’s mind? The mere thought of it makes me shiver.

I often find myself backed into a corner here and not wanting to make a fuss, I yield. But I thought it was time to try a different approach and so I decided to experiment on my unsuspecting Spanish flatmate and see if I could get her to actually wash her dishes.

I gathered myself, breathed deeply and started by timidly stomping my foot. I then put my hands on my waist as though I was a superhero ready to fight for justice. I felt more confident as if the pose itself gave me power. Longwinded sentences turned into short bursts of random accusations punctuated by joders. I was on a roll. I waved my arms a bit and used my hands to emphasise my point. My entire demeanour had changed. I now realise that I looked like an angry peacock seducing a female into mating. She stopped me half way through my dance with: “No te pongas flamenco”. I was stunned.

I had forgotten how acutely aware the Spaniards were of their own flaws and how they openly laughed about it.

In the end I washed the dishes myself before digging into a camembert.

Triumph after triumph Spanish star David Bustamante has released six albums, and each reached number one in the Spanish charts. He’s sold more than 1.4 million copies in total. With his seventh album now completed, Richard Lewington looks to find the secret of his success

s

ince being a finalist in Spanish TV’s starmaker Operación Triunfo (think X Factor or American Idol), singer David Bustamante, or just “Bustamante” as he is regularly known, has steadily risen to become one of Spain’s leading singers. With a string of hits such as “Abrázame muy fuerte” (Hug me tightly), “Bésame” (Kiss me) and “Además de ti” (As well as you) it’s easy to see how he has developed a Romeo-style reputation for his romantic charm through his lyrics of love, languish and lament. Next week, he launches Mío (Mine), his seventh album.

“People always label me with strange situations or weird comments—rumours such as quitting or just ‘hanging around’, but what really matters is the people who are close to me,” he replies when I ask him about the reasons behind releasing this album. “This is my chance to show them something different.”

Mine, all mine Bustamante, who does not believe in “evolution”, but in “change”, says the new album is the one that best represents his discography, through its melodic ballads and more modern sounds. It’s temperamental, and a compendium of all of the music that has influenced him throughout his career.

“It’s more grounded than all of the preceding albums, but has a greater force—relaxed if you like, but with some interesting points. Some of the songs

includes other tracks such as “Me Salvas” (You save me), “Gritaré” (I will scream), and “Bandera Blanca” (White Flag). The song “Como tú ninguna” (Nobody like you) has been chosen to be the first single.

Bustamante speaks of a close friendship with Pastora Soler, another leading Spanish singer, with whom he duets on Bandera Blanca. “Duets should be with people you love and for whom you have feelings,” he says, believing that honesty helps to emphasise the song. “I don’t like lies, such as duets that are made for marketing, because then you have to share the stage and pretend to feel good,” he adds. When speaking about song composition, Bustamante says that he is now in an area where he feels very comfortable in terms of production and arrangements of the tracks, and believes that his future is going to be shaped by being more involved throughout the production process. are hard, combining strong drum beats and ragged guitars with different love stories, but it’s more involved.”

Explaining that the lead song, “Mío”, is his own composition, he comments that it “speaks of the feeling of possessive love that some people hold,” and that he chose it for the name of the album because it’s so personal, hoping that “when people have the album in their hand, it also feels personal to them.”

Over the Top? It’s been ten years since he jumped to fame by participating in Operación Triunfo (often just abbreviated to “OT” in Spain), and although he summarises the experience as very positive, at present he is enjoying his work more than ever. The sudden leap to fame with OT was, he confides, very hard. “It was something big that came to all of the participants, and we had little time to enjoy everything that was taking place.” He recalls that despite all the fame, attention and the people around them, there were still times of great loneliness.

From the day that the grand final took place, the growth of the availability of music on the internet and an iPod generation have also arisen. So what does Bustamante think of the boom?

“We’re bombarded with more and more music, but perhaps not in the right way.

People need to understand that music is not free. If I or any artist doesn’t sell records then our career is over.”

Reaching out The launch of the new album will also be followed by a Mío tour which starts in February. Initially, there’s a sequence of theatre venues, and then it continues into the summer, with increased production demands in stadiums and concert halls. “I’m more comfortable in theatres.

They’re spaces where the music seems purer and I can address the songs differently. Theatres create an idyllic sound and people listen with more attention.”

So are we likely to hear Bustamante on our radios back home any time soon?

English is another strong issue that he thinks about often, and he reveals that he is working on a future project for the Anglo market. The international audience attracts him, but he stresses that it “doesn’t have to be in America or England, but Europe in general.” He also insists that he has a strong desire to break boundaries.

“I’d sing in Cantonese if I had to!” he grins.

It’s my party and I’ll try if I want to The UK’s general elections are always peppered with small or ridiculous parties, not least the Monster Raving Loony Party, who fielded 26 candidates in 2010. Can Spain compete? Vicky Knill investigates

osters of smiling, suit-wearing individuals, groups of cheering people in coordinated red or blue T-shirts and a large number of babies being kissed whether they like it or not—all clues that tell you Spain is having an election this month. The country’s political scene tends to be dominated by two main parties, the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE) and the Partido Popular (PP). But these are big fish; does the sea of Spanish politics conceal any smaller ones? Excluding regional parties, there are, in fact, quite a number of small groups whose policies range from specific and sensible to refreshingly silly, as the following list reveals:

Partido Pirata (Pirate Party) Website: www.partidopirata.es/ No, not “more rum” and “pieces of eight”. This party campaigns for the freedom of the internet. Specifically, it wants the internet to be available to everyone, opposes any form of internet censorship and wants to decriminalise file-sharing (music, videos etc). It also fights for the protection of net neutrality. Various campaigns have been undertaken, including one in support of WikiLeaks, for which the Pirata website states, “We believe that all attempts to stop the site are an attack on the fundamental values of democracy, and this is something that we cannot accept. Only dictators act in this manner, and this does not have a place in a democratic world.” The group is part of the “Pirate movement”, which is comprised of similar parties in countries worldwide, including the UK, the USA, Mexico, Norway, France, Brazil and China. This is their first general election.

Partido Azar (Chance Party) Website: www.partidoazar.com Just imagine what the world would be like without politicians (cue harp music, rainbows, and all the peoples of the world dancing, laughing and living in harmony). This is, more or less, what the Partido Azar proposes. It suggests replacing professional, elected politicians with citizens who would be selected at random to serve for a period of 6 months—in the same way that you could be called up for jury service in the UK, you could find yourself being called up for parliamentary duty in Spain. “But wait!” I hear you cry, “How can this party be standing in the elections? In doing so, aren’t they actually trampling over their own ideals?” An excellent question, but in response, the Azar party candidates promise not to run for election again in the next ten years, and not to take a penny more of their politician’s salary than they would have received if they had continued in their previous jobs. The party is a new kid on the block, so there are no prior results to indicate its appeal.

Partido del Karma Democrático (The Party of Democratic Karma) Website: http://web.humorenlared.com/pkd/que-es-el-pkd/ Based on a similar idea to the UK’s Monster Raving Loony Party, which campaigns with joke policies (for example, to ban greyhound racing so the UK can’t go to the dogs), the PKD was started by satirical magazine Karma Dice and is led by comedian, Bosco el Tosco, with the slogan “PKD: el voto inútil. El voto como tú.” (“Karma: the useless vote. The vote just like you.”) “Given how tiring and expensive it was to convince active political parties that our ideas were the best,” its website explains, “we decided to go direct and establish our own political party.” Past election pledges have included a proposal to pay civil servants in El Corte Inglés vouchers and a promise to be as corrupt as possible. This year it’s proposing “the reclamation of tapas, binge eating and dinners as real citizen participation and democracy” and “the promotion, by all democratic means, of free love, for the purposes of reducing stress in the general population.” It drew 2,300 votes in the nationals in 2004, and achieved more than 1,000 votes in the 2007 Bilbao Mayoral election.

This party, which has the slogan “Do not vote ‘en blanco’, vote for ‘Citizens En Blanco’”, promises that, if elected, it will do absolutely nothing. “Nothing new there. Our local council has been doing absolutely nothing for years!” you may say. But wait! This party pledges that its representatives won’t even take their seats. The argument works as follows: in Spanish electoral law there is a difference between a “null vote” (for example, when someone has carefully drawn an extended middle digit across their ballot paper— in other words, spoiled) and a “blank vote” (more or less, a vote for “none of the above”). On average about two percent of votes in the Spanish elections are of this second type. However, in the current system these votes are not acknowledged. If you vote for Ciudadanos en Blanco, the party promises that its politicians will refrain from taking their seats and therefore provide dissatisfied voters with the opportunity to make their voices heard, as well as saving the cost of a politician’s salary, because they wouldn’t get paid either. Wouldn’t it be fun if they won all of the seats? (Also, there is apparently another party called Alternativa en Blanco. There could be opposing blocks of empty seats!) In 2008, the party gained 14,193 votes.

The Others Parties which have operated in the past, but appear to be inactive at present:

Partido Mutuo Apoyo Romántico (The Party for Mutual Romantic Support) In 2004 this party, headed by Hong Guang Yu Gao, got 1,561 votes. It nobly campaigned for support and understanding between different ideologies, cultures and races.

Los Parados (The Unemployed) This party, led by Julio Mateos, aimed to fight against unemployment. It was also interested in stopping cuts in public spending and fighting fraud. This might seem like the ideal time for it to get support, but surprisingly, as far as we know, no candidates seem to be running in this year’s election.

Partido de los No-Fumadores (Party of Non-Smokers) Originally campaigning for the rights of non-smokers and for an end to smoking in public places, the PNF secured 1,616 votes in 2008. Following the new anti-smoking law, it’s not clear whether it is continuing in this election.

La Sandía con Tres Avances (The Watermelon with Three Advances) A party with a very specific campaign that sought changes in the management of the slots and gaming industry..

Independientes de los Independientes (Independent of the Independents) This group opposed those who ran as independents in elections.

Thus it claimed to be truly independent.

Partido Hache “There are many parties without a programme, but only one programme with a party!” This was the slogan of TV comedienne Eva Hache’s party in 2008. She announced that instead of criticising the political system from the outside, she would have a go at it from within. Sadly, she pulled out a few days before the election.

The Shivers More Silence Breaks When, in 2004, New York singer Keith Zarriello released his debut album, Charades, under the distinctly noughties moniker The Shivers, the accolades for its fusion of rock ‘n’ roll, rhythm and blues, soul and folk were not few in number. It moved a classically-trained church organist, Jo Schornikow, to get in touch, and subsequently join the band that year. Seven years and four albums later, the New York cultfavourites are only now starting to pique the interest of audiences outside the US, with the release of their latest album, More. The record’s premise of exploring the nature and different aspect of love is hardly an original one, and musically More is ensconced in the comfort zone of its manifold 50s and 60s rock and soul influences. But no matter; Zariello’s Tom Waits croon is a delight— warm, sincere and with word play and humour in the lyrics that offsets any earnestness. The church organ swells on “Kisses”, interposed with glissandos and cheeky walking bass fills. “Used to Be” ups the tempo, an excellent song that helps develop the evolving fibre of nostalgia and melancholia, climaxing in the penultimate track, “So Long Woman”, a dreamy ballad that builds in emotional intensity before the title track kicks in with brushed drums and standing bass evocative of Astral Weeks-era Van Morrison, as Zarriello riffs on the album’s title: “More than chore, more than a wet floor… I love you more, than I ever did, before.” Lovely stuff.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Hysterical Witchita Clap Your Hands Say Yeah found success suddenly, as one of the first groups to make their name through internet whispering alone. Their music was a synthesis of pacey beats, killerdiller melodies and featured the vocal talents of Alec Ounsworth, who, it seemed, was a young David Byrne in the making. But that was 2005—a whole six years ago—and, after an underwhelming follow up album, the band’s fortunes have dwindled. In comes Hysterical to arrest the law of diminishing returns, and while it’s difficult to escape the impression that this is nothing new, it’s definitely something of a return to form. Ounsworth has great agility in his voice, rising into notes and giving the vocals a cutting, percussive edge, which injects a sincerity into the maudlin lyrics and jangly guitars of “Misspent Youth” and “In A Motel”, drawing you in, forcing you to listen. However, like its immediate predecessor Some Loud Thunder, the quality of the songs on Hysterical is masked by questionable production choices. At times it’s a needlessly busy record, with a dense melange of synthesised strings omnipresent. Having hit on a winning formula so early on in their careers, CYHSY are now left chasing their own tails, and on this evidence they’ve still got some way to go to catch them.

What: Don’t be deceived by the small exterior of this bar—inside you can find a modern bar space plus, beyond the bar, a designated performance area that’s neither too constrained as to be uncomfortable, nor too big as to be impersonal.

People: Just about everybody, from those in their early 20s to those in their 50s and 60s, depending on the music or comedy that’s taking place. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy-going, with the bar and concerts attracting a lot of people, but never seeming to tip the balance into being uncomfortably overcrowded. It’s friendly without being intrusive, too. “I’m here seven days a week,” says owner Richard, “so the atmosphere has to be good!”

Drinks: Mojitos are popular (€7), plus of course cervezas (€3.50).

Music: A major part of the success of Soul Station—it’s a great place for live music and jam sessions, every day of the week. Monday sees a Jazz Jam session, Tuesday is Blues, Wednesday brings Funk, Thursday is Pop Rock, and Sunday is Soul and R&B. All start at 11pm, and all have free entrance. Fridays and Saturdays are concert nights, which start at 10pm, for which there’s a charge of around €5-€7, followed by DJ sets at 11.30 (free). Having now been established for three years, the jam sessions often attract some masters in their field, whether guitarists or trumpet players.

Anything Else: On Mondays to Thursdays, and Sundays, before the music kicks off, at 9pm there’s stand up comedy in Spanish. Their page had a large number of visits in very little time, which led them to quick underground success. In fact, when record label Sub Pop decided to sign them, they didn’t even have a manager. The quintet has come a long way since then. Their two albums have received great reviews both in the UK and US and it’s all down to their layered folk tracks that are laced with harmonies beautiful enough to make even the toughest kid stop, listen and not want the songs to end. Be sure to check out the video for “White Winter Hymnal” to get a glimpse of the type of place to which their Madrid gig will take you.

Peter Frampton arrives in Madrid to rock with the capital.

Best remembered for his 1976 album Frampton Comes Alive! (number one in the US, number six in the UK) this old-timer still has the magic to make you dance. The album put Frampton on top of the world as well as the cover of Rolling Stone (with a bare chest!), yet his career has never reached those same sales heights since. Even so, he remains a class act, with appearances in The Simpsons and Family Guy assuring us that he has definitely not gone, nor should he be forgotten. So, if you’re feeling nostalgic or just want to listen to some good rock tunes, then this is your man, and this is your concert.

While his younger brother and former Oasis band mate Liam is busy filling stages with his new get up Beady Eye, Noel Gallagher has decided to take on board the Manchester saying and “have a go ‘cause he thinks he’s hard enough”, musically speaking, of course. Yet there is nothing “hard” about his Photo (CC) flickr: Anirudh_Koul sweetly titled new album High Flying Birds. Draped with choirs, strings, horns and 60s lyrics, his new material is somewhat different from his past attempts at solo albums as it sounds a little more grand and mature.

Whilst there are echoes of Noel’s musical past in many of the new songs, make sure you don’t miss “AKA… What a Life!”, in which he quite dramatically recounts his limelight years, a predicted highlight of the concert here in Madrid.

With their unique style of mixing rock with flamenco rhythms, they’ve managed to produce six albums, even getting over the loss of one of the founding members, Miguel Angel “Migue” Benitez. Very popular in Spain, their songs contain great energy, and have given them the chance to be in the studio with Spanish stars such as Kiko Veneno, Tomasito, Raimundo Amador, Bebe, and Maldita Nerea.

Their shows are filled with fans calling themselves Garrapateros (tick men) meaning “people who are happy with what they’ve got”. Join them at Joy Eslava on the 9th.

Playing the right card InMadrid is pleased to collaborate with MADRID Cultura y Arte, which offers a new membership card for art, culture and leisure in the city. Tom Inkling meets the founders to find out about the incentives and benefits

Madrid has a great culture, but not every visitor knows or discovers it,” begins Arturo Orellana, founder of MADRID, Cultura y Arte, a new project designed to present the best of the city at discounted prices.

“The project was launched fairly recently, after one year’s preparation and development, and works on the basis of a membership card. We’ve already sold

around 4,000 cards, which means a lot of people are interested. And in a time of recession, people really appreciate reduced prices and great offers.”

The card provides price reductions in everything related to art, culture and leisure. There are discounts of up to 20 percent in shops, 20-50 percent in restaurants, and 60 percent in the cinema. If you want to indulge in cooking or dance classes, wine tasting evenings, or even renting a bike, the card will save you money. “In November we’re looking to offer 50 percent off in every theatre, so we’re improving the project day by day,” continues Arturo. But what was the spark that set the project on its way?

Starting out Sarah Robinson, the Marketing and Communications Director of MADRID Cultura y Arte, explains its origin. “When I came here three years ago I was an international student,” she says, “but I had to do all my own research to learn about Madrid and what it has to offer. The card is a service that I would have liked to have available at that time.” The initial target was international students, as more than 45,000 come to Madrid every year. “We approached the Tourism Council of Madrid and they offered us their support to develop this project; to provide students with the best services and information. It was a need,” adds Arturo.

However, it soon became clear that other parties were interested in having the card too. “We had comments such as ‘I’m not a student but can I buy the card?’ so we realised that this isn’t something that only students want, but anyone living in Madrid would want, too. And why shouldn’t it be for everybody?” continues Sarah.

The result was to extend card membership to include the general public.

Sarah is Canadian, but Arturo is Spanish, and they believe that the two nationalities help in understanding exactly what residents, students and visitors to the city are looking for. Many universities and language centres have bought the card to include it in their welcome pack, as they see it as an important service for their students. Alternatively, individuals can now buy the card directly from the MADRID, Cultura y Arte website.

Cultural exchange The objective is also to integrate students and visitors with the culture of Madrid and, importantly, to have the opportunity to meet Spanish people and to feel like a madrileño. “A lot of international students

come here, and they end up spending all their time with their own classmates,” comments Sarah, “but it’s important to visit all the neighbourhoods of the city, and to connect with the residents. In every single activity that we organise we make sure there is a connection with Spanish people and culture.”

The organised activities are also about having privileged access. On one Thursday each month there is a tour of the Caixa Forum building and its exhibits, given by a professional guide of the museum, which normally costs €18, but is free for MADRID Cultura y Arte cardholders. Also free to members, on the last Friday each month, the Prado opens from 8-10.30pm, when each of its rooms is hosted by staff from the museum who show and explain the works. On another Friday there’s a masterclass in the Thyssen, taught under the direction of the museum’s Education Programme. The latest one looked at 20th century art, including the works of Picasso, Pollock and Kandinsky.

“The basic idea is interculturalidad,” states Arturo, “but in addition to art and culture, you’re going to have fun too. Everyone always seems to get excited about our bar and club offers, whether it’s VIP entrance, drink offers or restaurant deals. We try to find the newest, coolest places in Madrid to show you.”

Cost conscious The cost of the card for a full year is €25. That may seem a large outlay at one time, particularly for a student, but having done a test run with the card, Sarah believes it’s a very competitive price. “A few weeks ago we went with some students to a restaurant, to an activity and to the movies, and we saved €28 in one day,” she confirms.

Tomb reader Jeff Wiseman visits Madrid’s largest cemetery and digs into its past to discover its curious history

We will never forget you because you were a model husband and a perfect father” reads the inscription in honour of a man who died in 1952, at the age of 49. It’s particularly touching, even though it’s just one stone amidst thousands in Madrid’s Cementerio de Nuestra Señora de la Almudena. The cemetery is the last resting place of more than five million people, a figure that exceeds the city’s current population, but it’s not the human connection that first draws your attention when you enter the magnificent gates and stroll beyond the large chapel; it’s the sheer size of the place that takes your breath away.

At 120 hectares, it’s the largest in Spain and one of the largest in Europe.

To put that area into perspective, imagine about 172 football pitches, or a space only slightly smaller than the Retiro. It’s so large that it must be one of the few cemeteries in the world to have a bus route running through the middle of it—the number 110, if you want to experience one of Madrid’s curious routes.

Grave concerns Located to the east of Madrid, within walking distance of La Elipa metro station, the cemetery has a chequered history. Originally, two cemeteries were planned, one in the east, and one in the west, but the latter never progressed.

The eastern construction commenced in 1877, designed by architects Fernando Arbós y Tremanti and José Urioste y Velada, and was still in progress in 1884 when a large cholera epidemic struck Madrid and created a sudden demand for space, forcing the start of burials in the new ground. There have been a number of extensions to the original plan, and following one increase in 1927, it was calculated that the cemetery would have a capacity to last until

spaces, giving a pigeonhole look to the walls. Some of the holes are sealed, although some are eerily empty, seemingly undergoing restoration or ready to swallow a new arrival.

The inconspicuous grassy mounds of UK cemeteries don’t exist, and instead small tombs have been built above ground, making the whole area a remarkable marble, stone and granite mosaic. Between 1884 and 1973 it was the only available cemetery for city residents, excluding one or two small churches and brotherhoods who managed to maintain their own. With a large number of family plots and a number of mausoleums, it’s even possible to observe a family history.

whose story was brought to wide public attention in Emilio Martinez Lázaro’s 2007 film. A memorial to them can now be seen. There are also monuments to those who fell in Spain’s conflicts with Cuba and the Philippines, as well as to the División Azul, Spanish troops who fought with Germany during World War Two, and the División Cóndor, the

Enrique Tierno Galván (1918-1986) Fondly regarded as “El Abuelo” (the grandfather) in his later years as mayor of Madrid, Galván is most well-known for the progress he helped Madrid realise after Franco’s rule. During his near seven-year term from 1979 to 1986, Galván gained popularity by leading the Movida Madrileña, in which the city found a new sense of identity, economic successes and a higher standard of living. The cemetery also honours Galván with a monument.

Yerby remained in Spain until his death from congestive heart failure in 1991.

Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) Spanish histologist, psychologist, Nobel laureate and “father of modern neuroscience”, Ramón y Cajal devoted his life to studying the pathology of the central nervous system. Perhaps his most notable achievement was the discovery of a new type of cell, named the interstitial cell of Cajal, which won him the ■ MARIT HARM Nobel Prize in 1906.

José Cubero Sánchez (1964-1985) More commonly known as “Yiyo”, José Cubero Sánchez was a bullfighter who tragically lost his life practicing the sport at the young age of 21. On 20 September, 1985, at the height of his career, Yiyo was fighting in Colmenar Viejo when he was pierced in the heart by the bull and killed instantly. A monument to Yiyo can also be found at Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas.

Lay of the land The basis for the original development was a natural hill, which was incorporated into the architects’ design, with the cemetery being formed by five banks. From the upper-most level, each bank drops five metres, and from some vantage points the effect can appear like a wedding cake. As you would expect, even in daylight there’s a strange isolation to the place, compounded by very few visitors and by the distant boundaries. Occasional trees provide some shade, but the birds seem to flutter away noisily, if not deliberately, as if making the most of the location and the opportunity to scare. The cemetery is open from 8am to 7pm from October to June, and to 8pm from July to September. If you decide to visit, do give yourself plenty of time to reach the exit before the gates are locked.

Spanish actor Fernando Rey used his talents in films, theatre, radio and television. After creating a name for himself in Spain, Rey reached international status in films such as The French Connection and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeousie. His career was full of awards and honours, and Rey is regarded as the first international Spanish actor.

Frank Yerby (1916-1991) This African-American historical novelist and writer moved to Spain in 1955 to escape from the racial discrimination being faced in the United States. He based his works around his experiences
