Gay Pride With over 1.5 million attendees every year, Gay Pride Madrid is certainly loud and proud! On the final weekend of June, the streets of Chueca and Sol will be bursting with people, celebrations, and parties to be held both inside venues and out on the streets. PHotoEspaña 2012 Feast your eyes with a new perspective! PHotoEspaña, an international visual arts celebration with artists from 44 different countries, is returning this month. Lavapiés Streetball Champs Know how to dribble a ball or shoot some hoops? The annual Lavapiés Streetball Championships take place from 7-10 June. Tapestry School of San Lorenzo de El Escorial
Age Concern España: New Website
The Tapestry School of San Lorenzo de El Escorial was founded more than 25 years ago to teach the tapestry craft, and at the end of each of its courses there is an exhibition to show the work that its students have achieved. The next event takes place on the weekend of 23-24 June, when visitors can see the finished pieces, and the minute detail required to produce them. II Festival Internacional de Fado and II Festival Clazz Continental Latin Jazz Teatros Canal will be transformed into an international entertainment destination in June with the second Festival Internacional de Fado and the second Festival Clazz Continental Latin Jazz. First, from 21-24 June, it will host 20 talented Fado artists from Portugal, including Ana Moura, who will give four concerts that demonstrate the best of the country’s vocal and musical style. There will also be gastronomy and cinema events. Then, from 28 June until 1 July, the international Latin jazz festival will take over the theatre’s Sala Verde. Hosting eleven artists in another four concerts, a highlight of this celebration Ana Moura includes the man responsible for bringing Brazilian music to Europe—guitarist, singer and composer Jayme Marques. Tips from the Tower Helpful monthly advice from the British Consulate office in Pº de la Castellana’s Torre Espacio Importation and Re-registration of Vehicles: What the British Consulate can do for you. If you have recently taken up residence in Spain and want to import your car, the British Consulate can help. The first step for UK citizens is to contact the Spanish customs authority to see what is required in order to re-register your vehicle. One of the documents typically required by customs is the Proof of Transfer of Address, a consular letter which can be issued by the British Consulate to confirm that you were resident in the UK, or another country, during the last 12+ months. In order to get one of these letters from the Consulate you can make the initial application by email, sending attached scanned copies of a series of documents as listed on the Consulate website: ukinspain.fco.gov.uk. The Proof of Transfer of Address certificate is often required for other official purposes such as changing the vehicle license plates, or for importation of household furnishings, particularly if you are a British citizen moving to Spain after a period of residence in a country outside the European Union. In trendy La Latina, an original and creative space where you can enjoy a coffee while browsing and buying books or independent records Did you know that, until recently, the trendy and arty neighbourhood of La Latina didn’t have a bookshop at all? The situation changed last January, when three young friends decided to open Café Molar, to provide coffees, books and vinyl records all under one roof. These three products are the protagonists, and the shop enjoys an international atmosphere, perfect for relaxation. They have a collection of more than 2,000 books covering theatre, poetry, essays and, above all, comic and fiction, from independent publishers—not the place to find the latest best-seller! In the music area, Café Molar sells an exclusive selection of independent label vinyls including hip-hop, electro and reggae. If you’re not in a rush, don’t hesitate to select a seat in the peaceful and quite coffee zone, where your coffee can be taken with delicious New York-style baked temptations like carrot and ginger cakes, apple pie, and cookies. Of course, sandwiches, beers and other soft drinks are available too. To add to the ambience, there’s a space downstairs that’s used for different cultural activities, such as presentations or storytelling. A great mix.
I’m a bit of a cinema buff—granted my taste in movies is somewhat appalling (Titanic, The Sound of Music, etc.) and I cry like a little girl when Jack Dawson dies—but I still expect, when I pay for my cinema ticket with the hardearned cash that I so rightly deserve after spending hours on end listening to kids murdering the English language, that I get to sit down, dig into my popcorn bucket and enjoy the show. Is that too much to ask? Apparently so! When it comes to cinema etiquette, people seem to have lost the plot. I’m well aware that in today’s societies it is of the utmost importance to stay in touch with what’s happening in the world and that, thanks to our good friend Steve Jobs, we can do so 24/7, whether we’re on the can, at a funeral or in the middle of having sex. Though I believe that on entering the sacred dark room (no, not the ones in Chueca!), you should switch your damn phone off! As a teacher, I pride myself in being thorough when clarifying vocabulary. So what does “switching off” a device mean? “Switching off” a device, such as a mobile phone, does not mean putting it on “silent” so that you can check your twitter account at the precise moment when one of Titanic’s funnels collapses and kills hundreds of passengers, making everyone in the cinema shiver except you and me—you because you were too busy maniacally waving your thumbs around and me because I was temporarily blinded by the light emanating from your iPhone. “Switching off” a phone does not mean putting it on vibrate so that the entire row gets a massage when your mum texts you about dinner. “Switching off” a phone actually means pressing that little “off” button, often found on top of the device, and for a ridiculous 120 minutes unplug, chill and most importantly: stop pissing everyone off (ie, me!) Don’t go anywhere! I’m not done yet. For those of you, like myself, with a weak bladder who find themselves unable to endure a long period of time without rushing to the toilet, you’ll find that an aisle seat is better suited to your condition, therefore allowing you to quickly pop to the loo without making half of the cinema stand up. Don’t sit in the middle of the bloody row! And don’t thank me for this advice—it’s called common sense! As for you united gaspers, criers and sobbers, please feel free to do just that—gasp, cry, and sob—that’s what we’re there for. But gasping, crying and sobbing do not mean talking. Shut up! I did not pay an outlandish 9 plus refreshments to listen to you! Funnily enough, the truly thrilling tale of how your little brother peed his pants in PE yesterday or how you got so drunk in Vistillas last week does not interest me—Titanic is sinking and people are dying, get some perspective for Christ’s sake! Clap! Laugh! Burst into tears! But please do so at the appropriate time, in unison with everyone else. You’ll find that laughing your head off at the end of Titanic is blasphemous. And that if I had been allowed to bring a cricket bat in to the cinema, I would have happily bashed your head in with it. I hope this clears up any misunderstanding and that we can move forth in the future, enjoy civilised gatherings and, most importantly, avoid any bloodshed. Love FAIRY TALES? Missed an issue? The Arthur Johnson Story Part 2: Eleven men and one woman Arthur Johnson played a role in the early development of Real Madrid. In the second part of our story, Jeff Wiseman reveals Arthur’s unusual marriage, his work, and looks at his ten years as club manager Concepción Mines with its railway (1909)— all were close to Valverde del Camino, and Arthur must have been engaged in some sort of work for these concerns. Postcards from Arthur prove him to be in the town in 1913 and 1920, with one example in the latter year being addressed to a Mrs Kaesmacher. Records show that the Spanish-based company director in that period was a Belgian engineer named Charles Kaesmacher.

Dear Mr Johnson I am in receipt of your letter of the 22 March notifying your engagement to my daughter Ada. I feel confident that you have made a wise selection. Marriage entails grave responsibilities. Life is but a battle with the world—but when one is united with a partner of one’s own choice and affection exists mutually— then the battle is an easy one and we go on from day to day feeling happy and contented. I sincerely hope that your marriage will be a prosperous one and trust we all here shall have the pleasure at no distant day of the company of yourself and my daughter. Yours very truly, H M Silver One further fact that added to the controversial nature of their union was that Ada, who was born in 1872, was six years older than Arthur. However, InMadrid has obtained a copy of the marriage certificate, which states Arthur’s age, correctly, as 24, but gives Ada’s, who was actually 30 years old, as 25. Was Arthur aware of the true difference? Or were closer ages selected so that the registration raised fewer eyebrows at the Vice Consulate? The answer will probably never be known. The marriage certificate at least provides addresses for both parties, so we know that Ada was resident at Calle Espoz y Mina, 17, and that Arthur lived at Calle Belén, 18. Both buildings survive from that period.

Football first Despite the unusual factors, the marriage was to be a happy one, although there was no immediate honeymoon for Ada. An interesting declaration in Phil Ball’s excellent book, White Storm: 100 Years of Real Madrid, suggests that Arthur pre-empted a problem about football that still arises today— infringement on relationships. In a document from the Real archives, Ball reveals that Julián Palacios, the first president of Madrid CF, described Arthur as getting married on a Saturday, and then turning up to play for the team the following morning! In 1910, we know from the Real website, www.realmadrid.com, that Arthur had retired from playing, but had the honour of becoming the club’s first trainer/manager, a responsibility that continued until 1920. Under Johnson’s supervision, Madrid won the Copa del Rey in 1916-17, and no less than five regional championships (1913, 16, 17, 18 and 20). This decade was significant in the club’s history, with the inauguration of an official ground, Campo de O’Donnell, which actually had the luxury of a barrier between the spectators and the playing field, and the start of the career, from 1911, of a new young player called Santiago Bernabéu.
It was on the 29 June, 1920, that Madrid CF received the title “Real” (Royal), bestowed by King Alfonso XIII, but despite a connection stretching almost 20 years, it seems as though Arthur Johnson may have missed that momentous occasion. He had embarked as a passenger on the Hildebrand, of the Booth Steamship Company, when it had called at Lisbon. The ship, having set out from Brazil, arrived in Liverpool on the 9 June, 1920. Arthur travelled first class. At some time in the 20s, he must have returned, and it could be that Ada stayed in Madrid throughout this period. Both he and Ada are recorded as having travelled from Spain to Liverpool on the 29 June, 1928, aboard the Orduna, of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company. This time the ship had set out from Chile, and the Johnsons embarked at Santander. Their fortunes may have taken a slight turn for the worse, as on this occasion they travelled second class.
Final whistle Grandson Dave Johnson adds one more intriguing fact about Arthur. “I do know that he wrote an English-Spanish technical dictionary, a copy of which is still in the possession of another member of our family, Alan (c) Dave and Duane Johnson
aving detailed Arthur Johnson’s football career from 1902-1909 with Madrid CF (later Real Madrid), in our May edition, the first year of that period saw a big change in his personal life. In April 1902, five weeks before he scored Madrid’s first official goal, he had fallen in love and married. What made the relationship particularly unusual was that Arthur was of the Church of England, but the woman who became his wife, Ada Silver, was Jewish. “Ada and Arthur met because Ada went to visit her brother, Joe Silver, who I believe was sharing a flat with Arthur at the time,” explains Dave Johnson, Arthur’s Canadian grandson. “Ada was almost 30, a confirmed spinster, and she travelled unescorted!” It seems that no church would accommodate a marriage with parties from two different religions, but the problem was overcome by registering it at the British Vice Consulate. Nevertheless, Ada’s father, at home in Liverpool, had no reservations. Arthur must have written to seek his permission for the marriage, and Mr Silver’s letter in response is still in the Johnson family’s possession. He writes:

A quarter of a century ago today in old Madrid we set out to share each other’s joys and sorrows and it is my warmest wish that we may be spared to continue to do so for another 25 years. Yours ever, Arthur The dates mean their marriage was on 19 April, 1902—a Saturday, as Julian Palacios’ document implied. Sadly, Arthur Johnson passed away two years later on 23 March, 1929, aged just 50 years, as a result of pneumonia. He died at their home in Wallasey, Merseyside, just across the river from another city that now has a great football history—Liverpool. Ada, apparently, despite her Jewish faith, was never very religious. “She believed in ‘spirits,’” explains Dave Johnson, “and supplemented her meagre income in later years by reading ‘tea leaves’. She really looked the part!” The question “What if Arthur could see Real Madrid now?” springs to mind all too easily. We know he took the game seriously, and he’d no doubt be overwhelmed but happy to learn of the standing of the club. Proud, too, of those who followed in his footsteps, such as Di Stéfano, Puskas, Gento, Raúl, Butragueño, Beckham and Ronaldo. After all, Arthur scored Real’s first official goal, managed the club for ten years, crossed paths with Santiago Bernabéu, and apparently turned out for the team the day after he got married. From the world to Madrid The first Madrid International Film Festival takes place from 6-8 June. Amber Rolt meets the organisers and talks to Katina Dunn, whose documentary spotlights Flamenco artists in Los Angeles

ith the glitz and glamour associated with film festivals today, it’s sometimes easy to forget what the purpose of a film festival actually is; it’s not all celebrity gossip and who’s wearing what, but the opportunity to enjoy new and exciting cinema. This is exactly what the Madrid International Film Festival, under the guidance of President Carl Tooney, aims to achieve in its first edition, which comes to the city this month.
The price is right What makes this new film festival so special is that it is open to absolutely anybody and all screenings are free. Who cares that you’re not brushing shoulders with Brad and Angelina when you can watch as many films as you wish without the extortionate prices and exclusive guest lists of Cannes? Festival Programmer Tom Wardlow explains how Tooney is “looking forward to two days of free international cinema for all. Everyone can just come and watch movies”. With his previous experience running both the Tenerife International Film Festival and his UK-based Film Maker Festival, the organisation and expectation are certainly safe in Tooney’s hands. For Madrid, 386 films were entered for the selection process, with film makers from 47 different countries, which has provided a huge choice of independent and international movies from across the globe. Screenings start at 9am, carrying on until late in true Spanish tradition. Be sure to arrive early as tickets are on a first come first served basis. Kicking off the action is the premiere of Spanish film Camille by Carme Puche, a short-

film inspired by a moment in the life of Camille Claudel, who was not only August Rodin’s lover, but a great sculptor in her own right. Further films originate from the USA, France, Finland and Australia, and day one also includes the UK’s City of Dreamers, by Jamie Patterson, a full length feature based around the music scene in Brighton.

Good Kumpanía One documentary which is bound to go down a storm in Madrid is the European premiere of Kumpanía, which is nominated for best documentary feature and soundtrack. Dedicated to the lives of Flamenco artists in Los Angeles, this film by Katina Dunn follows the stories of extraordinary contemporary musicians, who are all magically drawn to this old Spanish art form. Spotlighting these artists and their work, the movie follows their separate tales and interceptive paths as they collectively devote themselves to fight for the survival of Flamenco against the backdrop of 21st century Los Angeles. This juxtaposition of a traditional Andalucian art in modern day LA makes a wonderful contrast for this exciting and touching tale which brings Flamenco to life through the lives of the talented cast. Every character has their own story connecting them to the Spanish tradition; Antonio De Jerez whose father was a Flamenco singer, Zarate Fernandez who ran away to Spain to pursue her dream of dancing, or percussionist Morales who pursued the art after having played with the Black Eyed Peas, are just a few amongst many who all share the same passion—to keep the flame of Flamenco alight.
Motion pictures When director Katina Dunn first came across the art form in the US, it was in a small club in LA—the Hollywood Studio Bar & Grill—she was instantly unsettled as to why the sound of Flamenco wasn’t fully known. “I was thinking, why aren’t there people lined up to get in here, to see these artists. Next door was a disco and the lines went around the block. I was really puzzled. The Flamenco artists were playing their hearts out in a room full of empty tables. And it didn’t matter to them whether an audience was there or not!” She was inspired to share their story. “These artists haunted me in my sleep,” she says. Although Dunn has followed a career in writing for the past twenty years, the written word wasn’t going to be enough to tell this tale, and wouldn’t capture the aspects of the art she so greatly wanted to share. So her life as a director began. “How can they [an audience] hear Mizuho’s steps? See that ecstasy in Vanessa’s face? See Jose’s fingers fly over the fret?” she explains, “It had to be a film.” Her next task was to find the right individuals to participate, but it wasn’t an easy process with so many talented Flamenco enthusiasts out there. In the end she followed her heart. “I cast the people I fell in love with, who touched me in some way.” Kumpanía has already celebrated success at the US Memphis Film Festival, and Dunn wishes to share a new kind of Flamenco in Spain, although she suspects it will be like bringing “ice to Eskimos”. “But the thing about Flamenco is that every artist is different and I think people want to experience art from different performers,” she adds. “If you like rock ‘n roll you’re not going to see only one band.” The screening will be sure to generate heels tapping and arms waving all the way down the street. Dunn hopes “the madrileños will go to see Kumpanía because they will enjoy the LA vibe and respect these artists.”

A Band of Rogues (Argentina). 106 mins. Directed by T Jara Morgan. A group of American musicians are stuck in Argentina after they are arrested in possession of drugs. Told in eleven chapters, each of which coincides with a track on the musicians’ album, this story follows their adventures through rehab, across Argentina, and finally into Chile. Broken Wings (United Kingdom). 53mins. Directed by Kevin Bisbangian. A Libyan political prisoner has been tortured during his five-year prison sentence. He returns to London to start a new life and hopefully regain the affections of his ex-girlfriend. He tries to write a book about his prison ordeal, but the Libyan regime is intent on stopping him.

Bill Murray and Francis McDormand play the girl’s parents, Bruce Willis is the town police captain and Edward Norton the local Scout master. 15 June Cave of Forgotten Dreams (La Cueva de los Sueños Olvidados) In this documentary, director Werner Herzog descends into the Chauvet Cave in southern France with 3D cameras to capture the world’s oldest cave paintings—created 32,000 years ago and off-limits to the general public. 22 June
The Sisters Brothers Patrick DeWitt Granta Books Dark modern comedy meets old American Western in Patrick DeWitt’s thrilling and award-nominated tale of murderers for hire in the midst of the California gold rush. Brothers Eli and Charlie Sisters have built reputations that precede them in each outpost town of the American West as skilled killers paid by a shadowy “Commodore”. Told from the perspective of Eli, who explores anew his relationship with Charlie as the novel unfolds, the story follows the two as they travel on horseback to their next job, killing along the way with a kind of even-keeled boredom. The story feels strangely contemporary as Eli begins to understand himself and his role better in the midst of duels, cowboy hats and desperate gold-seekers. DeWitt is ruthlessly brilliant in rendering the central pair as they meet with success and disaster in a meandering journey that some say evokes Don Quixote. The author’s moment of genius, though, lies in a climax that startlingly captures the greedy hope that drove both men west in search of phantom riches and still universally haunts ■ JENNA EBERSOLE us today.
Fast-paced mystery writer James Patterson joins with Mark Sullivan to tell the tale of a madman enacting his revenge in front of an international audience at this summer’s Olympics in London. Patterson brings his signature style to create a high-tension story, starting with a mysterious death and the curiously named “Cronus” who stands behind the horror. Reprising the Private London company, an exclusive detective agency, Patterson follows protagonist Peter Knight’s quest to find the truth behind the slayings that threaten to bring the games to a halt. The story is both unnerving and thrilling, drawing a riveting picture of what this summer´s event will look like, but also depicting the kind of terrorist plot that could threaten any such highly-watched spectacle. Though the authors reveal perhaps too much too quickly about the killer and explore characters only breezily, the novel is what we expect and hope for in a Jack Bauer-style mystery. Private Games is a fun, fast read that gives us a taste for the upcoming sporting festival—even if we hope it doesn’t feature quite the same closing ceremony. ■ JENNA EBERSOLE

Russell Parton gets out his olives and tells us what we should, or shouldn’t, be listening to
Beach House Bloom Bella Union Frothing at the mouth would be over-egging it, but Bloom, the new album from Baltimore duo Beach House, has been gleefully anticipated after the success of Teen Dream two years ago, and on the heels of the quite remarkable single, “Myth”. The song is the album’s opener, a raw swirl of a melody that takes you into its confidence, building into a barely decipherable chorus with arpeggios that ripple and lashings of reverb. The album is no game changer, a return for the slow motion drums, organ drones and hazy electric guitar that complement the richly nuanced vocals of Victoria Legrand, whose melancholic delivery is, as ever, the record’s centrepiece, darkly commandeering and shot through with emotion when straining for the high notes. Unfortunately, “Myth” is not quite the springboard into the musical stratosphere that fans were hoping for. Followed by the melodically lumbering “Wild” and rhythmically trundling “Other People”, there are some alarming flirtations with mediocrity here, partly assuaged by a rallying second half that includes guitar-led “The Hours”, and “Troublemaker”, where a lighter, choral texture is deliciously accompanied by a sixties Wurlitzer organ. Both tracks, however, are hampered by limp choruses and predictable song structures. While not without its lovely moments, Bloom is undeniably a dip in form.
Xoel Lopez Atlantico Mushroom Pillow Xoel Lopez is one of the leading figures in modern Spanish song-writing, having released six well-received albums under the pseudonym Deluxe in a style that’s a blend of alternative pop with classic folk. After a hiatus in the Americas, he’s returned to Spain to launch Atlantico, which he rates as his most personal album to date, released for the first time under his own name. It’s a collection of visceral songs subtly diverse and clearly influenced by his travels. “Hombre de ninguna parte” sets the tone, an intimate portrayal of his recent life as a rolling stone with intricately picked Spanish guitar at the fore. Explanations are not necessary, as the song builds up into a list of words—luces, humo, sombras—with the music itself joining the dots between them. The sound is balanced, with seemingly nothing left to chance. “Caballero” contains faint touches of flamenco guitar, whilst “Desafinado amor” has chugging percussion and slide guitar. An arsenal of instruments and musicians have helped with the album, while Lopez, like the omniscient narrator with softly intoned vocals, provides a panoramic view of the past with zen-like calm, the only drama coming in the way of a key change or unexpected vocal part. Truly, this is music to stroke a beard to and think about life.

Tel: 91 523 90 27. www.teatrolara.com Formed in 1999 in Atlanta, Georgia, Black Lips didn’t launch their debut full length album until 2003. But, after that release, they slowly built a fan base and received media attention that appreciated their bumpy imitation of a mixture of musical genres including blues, rock, country and punk. Although the sound that Black Lips create is definitely to be experienced through your headphones, their live interpretation of it promises to be something else. According to a blog post by Bishop Jim Swilley of Georgia’s non-denominational Church, who happens to be bassist Jared Swilley’s dad, Black Lips have become known “for something other than the music”. And that is putting it politely. Gigs by these four lads have previously involved broken instruments, sweaty and messy mosh pits, nudity and bordering-on-scary stage invasions. But their catchy rackets never cease to shine through, recalling elements of 90s garage-rock and scattered with influences from Crypt, The Ramones and even The Yardbirds. Check out “Modern Art” from their 2011 album Arabia Mountain to get a feel of what’s to come on the 5th!

Spanish trio Guadalupe Plata are a dirty blues band that take the ‘underground’ sound to another level. Made up of drummer Guadalupe, guitarist/vocalist Plata, and washtub bass-pounding Paco, these chicos from Ubeda, Jaén, allow their instruments to take on shocking, life-like personas and create music with both soul and sweat that echoes influences from the original blues greats such as Elmore James and Son House. On their debut album, however, they have added a few more abstract ingredients to the mix and many of its tracks are soaked with flaming guitar licks, punk eruptions and even some Flamenco-style vocals. The self-titled album, released last year, can be listened to in full on their website and a definite highlight is “Pollo Podrío”. If you are into your grimy blues and are looking for the perfect Saturday night gig to get you feeling even hotter, Guadalupe Plata won’t disappoint.
London rock’n’rollers The Pretty Things originally formed way back in 1963. Featuring the raucous vocals of Mick Jagger lookalike Phil May (although unlike Mick he once claimed to have the longest hair in the UK) and the cutting leads of guitarist Dick Taylor, the band has always revolved around these two members. Their early stuff can be described as raw blues-rock influenced by the likes of Bo Diddley (check out ‘Rosalyn’, later made famous by David Bowie and full of Diddley rhythms), yet the late 60s saw them take a more psychedelic turn and release the S.F. Sorrow album; the first rock opera which inspired The Who to write Tommy in 1969 and continues to earn them appreciation as one of the first and best concept album makers. They are veterans on the road and are finally bringing their years of gigging experience to Madrid, in a show which promises to please both young and old ears alike.

Sala Marco Aldany, C/Princesa, 1 (Metro: Plaza de España). www.salarena.com/salamarcoaldany.html Despite having a very famous Dad (yep, you guessed it, Bob), Stephen Marley enjoys a very successful musical career of his own; a five-time Grammy award winner as an artist, producer and member of Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers (alongside other members of the Marley clan) proves him to be quite the established musician. Primarily a maker of reggae music that echoes his father’s legacy, he also adds elements of hip-hop, R&B and rap to his sound and has notably collaborated on tracks with stars such as Nelly and Erykah Badu. Marley released his first solo album, Got Music?, in 2005 although his real breakthrough as an artist came two years later with Mind Control, for which his brothers, Damian, Ziggy, and Julian provided songwriting support and guest vocals while Stephen took the leading role. Listen to the “Chase Dem” track and get your head bobbing. This promises to be as laid back and melodic as you could wish for from any Marley on a warm summer’s night. W W W. I N M A D R I D . C O M

Día de la Músíca is actually a four-day festival, and it returns to the Matadero arts centre this month. The festival is now celebrating its seventh anniversary, and will offer a huge choice of solo artists and bands. According to Enrique Calabuig, the Festival Director, the objective is to provide a window for “emerging artists”, for Francisca Valenzuela at Día de la Música “people who like to listen to dynamic music”. Organised in collaboration with the Instituto de Cervantes and Radio 3 RNE, Día de la Música has scheduled artists from both home and abroad with a special focus on sustainability and things “local to the city”. Headlining are Azealia Banks, Two Door Cinema Club, James Blake, The Ravonettes, Love of Lesbian, Spoon, Christina Rosenvinge and many more. On Saturday morning (23 June), from 11am, there will be a free concert (until the venue is full), featuring 12 artists. Closing the event, on Sun 24, will be a day entitled Mini Día de la Musíca which will be aimed at families with children aged between two and ten years old. All in all, something for everyone, and a great line-up too.

A different kind of line-up will be taking the place of the Atletico eleven as pop music station Cadena 100 celebrate their 20th birthday in style at the Vicente Calderon stadium this month. Station Director Javier Llano says that that the concert is a social event for the people by the people with an aim to raise funds for Manos Unidas—a charity which works with impoverished children in underdeveloped countries. Promising a mix of the best in popular Spanish music, the concert will showcase some of the country’s biggest artists. Crooner Alejandro Sanz will be flying in from his Miami home to join Operación Triunfo finalist David Bisbal, as well as Dani Martin, Estopa, La Oreja de Van Gogh and many more for a night of the very best in Spanish homegrown talent.

Also open Mon, 10am-7pm). On hearing the words “twentieth-century realism”, one American artist predominantly springs to mind—Edward Hopper. Hopper (1882-1967) began his early career as an illustrator, although this was not his passion. Upon meeting his future wife and muse (Josephine Nivison) in 1923, his own style of painting began to evolve as she recognised and encouraged his talent. His work features outdoor scenes and landscapes although he also had a particular interest in the public and locations such as bars and hotels. Hopper would interpret everyday reality and transform it through his imagination, while capturing an eerie sense of loneliness. The viewer is allowed an intimate glimpse into the private life of his subjects, who seem to never quite know if they are being observed or not. This new exhibition, organised in collaboration with the Réunion des Musées Nationaux de France, presents an opportunity to see the largest collection of his work outside of the USA, and includes a selection of 70 items spanning Hopper’s early sketches right through to his most recognised works. Tongues First performed in 1978 at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco, Tongues, written by Sam Shepard and Joseph Chaikin, tells of a child’s birth, growth, manhood, and moment of transition between life and

He produced a huge amount of work that gave him recognition, and this exhibition is dedicated to the last, and possibly most successful, period of his life from 1513-1520. Seventy paintings and drawings are included, and whether you’re keen on Renaissance art or not, this is a rare chance to see the work of one of the most influential artists of all time. El Susurro de lo Efímero Rebecca Menendez has recently exhibited her work in various galleries throughout Europe, and is now coming to Madrid for her first ever individual exhibition. Guzel Suleymanova, prima ballerina at the Bashkirian Opera, will perform the Dying Swan, Pavlova’s signature piece. Hosts of knowledge The European Football Championship is about to sweep the continent with a wave of football fever. But what do we know about the hosts, Poland and Ukraine? Aylan Aliyeva finds some curiosities to light up your half-time chat rom 8 June until 1 July, bars are bound to be flooded by die-hard football fans as well as those simply willing to join in the European Championship festivities—national colours will paint the streets, and pervading chants and banter will make ears bleed. This year’s tournament is hosted for the first time by the eastern European nations of Ukraine and Poland, to where many fans from the UK, Spain and Ireland will be travelling. However, to allow you to add some interesting comments to a conversation other than offside, goal and penalty, we’ve rounded up some trivia and little-known facts about each host nation for a glimpse of their respective cultures.

Pride in the people Given that Ukraine is currently facing criticism over its alleged human rights and democratic violations, one might find it rather curious that one of the first European constitutions was written in 18th century Ukraine by the wonderfully named Hetman (the title awarded to the highest military office during Ukraine’s Cossack Hetmanate) Pylyp Orlyk, who formulated a standard for the separation of powers in government. After nagging my Polish friends for something similar about their native land, what arose every time without fail was the collective pride for having produced so many prominent and distinguished people. The strength of the exhaustive list is its variety, as it

includes Ludwik Zamenhof, the inventor of the constructed international language Esperanto, the brilliant composer Frederic Chopin, the greatly revered Pope John Paul II, and Maksymilian Faktorowicz, the founder of the cosmetics company Max Factor. Take a leaf from each of their books and not only will you communicate, listen enchantedly and pray, but you’ll do so with a great looking face.
A little etiquette Close proximity to Russia has affected each country in terms of culture, language and history, and national drinking habits are no exception. Both countries are avid fans of the delectable drink that is vodka, but it is Ukraine, where the magic potion is referred to as horilka, that truly champions the spirit’s cause. According to the CNBC website, Ukraine is the world’s fifth heaviest drinking nation with per capita alcohol consumption at 15.60 litres. Another legacy of both countries’ close heritage is superstition. In the vast reservoir of popular beliefs that Ukraine and Poland largely share, one learns that spilling salt leads to domestic quarrels, whistling indoors causes financial troubles, and sitting at the corner of a table spoils chances of matrimonial bliss for single women. Poles are courteous to the extent that it is still common for a man to kiss a lady’s hand when they meet. Chivalry is not limited merely to hand-kissing, however; polite Poles frequently make use of Pan and Pani, their versions of Sir and Madam, to address one
another during conversations. Their Ukrainian counterparts are no strangers to good manners either. The current Ukrainian national anthem contains only the first six lines of a poem written by Pavlo Chubynsky, the title of which translates as Ukraine has not yet perished—the remaining verses are considered to be politically incorrect as they lay claim to contemporary Russian and Polish territories, reports the Ukrainian news portal FaceNews.
Not just soccer For sporting interests other than football, Ukraine has a Cricket Association, and the cities of Kyev, Kharkiv, Ternopil and Donetsk all have cricket teams. Poland, however, is keen on the game of Bandy, a winter sport played on ice, but which has many similarities to soccer. Despite the use of skates and sticks, the playing area is about the size of a football field, each team has 11 players, and there are two halves of 45 minutes. Strangely, the only European Bandy Championship was held in Davos, Switzerland, in 1913, when the champions were England, even though the game is now almost unknown in the UK.
Further notes On a musical theme, Ukraine is the home of the trembita, a horn which has no holes or openings, and can be up to four metres in length. It’s generally used in mountainous terrain, sounded to advise locals of important events. Rumour has it that the sound of the

trembita can travel more than 10km. Poland, however, inspired by the original Woodstock Festival in 1969, has Przystanek Woodstock, a huge open-air festival which this year will run from 2-4 August, at Kostrzyn on the Oder. Damian Marley, The Darkness and Asian Dub Foundation are scheduled to appear, and remarkably it’s free, with more than 500,000 annual visitors. The event is organized by the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, the biggest and most respected Polish charitable foundation, which provides children’s hospitals with medical equipment. Finally, if you are thinking of ways to celebrate a potential Polish victory, then please don’t embarrass yourself by dancing the polka. Despite the tempting association of the first three letters, our investigation shows that the dance actually originated in Bohemia territories which make up the modern-day Czech Republic.
