1593 Annual Fund Brochure 2020/2021
The care of the whole individual, cura personalis – where each child is known and loved – is at the heart of the academic and pastoral provision at both Stonyhurst and Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall. The upheaval of recent months due to COVID-19 means that this is more important now than ever before and we are calling upon the Stonyhurst Family, our community of OS, parents and friends, to help support us in this endeavour by giving generously to our 2020/2021 Annual Fund. With this Annual Fund we are focusing exclusively on special projects which will have an immediate positive impact on pupil experience. These projects cannot be funded by school fees and rely on the generosity of our supporters. We are very grateful to our Social Committee drawn from the parental day and boarding body across Stonyhurst and Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall. These volunteers work tirelessly, arranging social events enjoyed by our current parent and past parent community and also fundraise in support of the strategic goals of the Annual Fund. We hope that you will feel able to support one or more of these projects, knowing that your gift, no matter the size will make a difference to our pupils. Your donation will help us to provide a broad range of opportunities for our pupils during their Stonyhurst education. We would be very grateful for any gift that you feel able to make and thank you in advance for your support.
Aiming High £9,000 IMPROVING OUR BASKETBALL COURTS Our pupils would be very grateful if we could replace the tired basketball backboards and rings in the Ambulacrum. This is our pupils’ only all-weather space and it rains up here a lot! Our practice facilities will be much improved and our identity will be visible during home sporting fixtures – invoking pride for our home team.
Equipment List • 4 x new extending acrylic indoor wallmounted basketball backboards • 1 x new freestanding basketball backboard system • 1 x new electric wall-mounted main court acrylic basketball backboard • 1 x wireless controlled wall-mounted electronic scoreboard • 2 x new fixed outdoor backboards
Many thanks

If just 10 parents were to donate £20 per month for three years, with Gift Aid, we could raise £9,000 and entirely fund this project.

Illuminating Performances £10,000
Leadership, Teamwork and Camaraderie
SOUND AND VISION
£8,000
Our pupil theatre technicians in the College, under the watchful guidance of Mr O’Connor, are responsible for ensuring that the lighting, sound and other technical aspects of all our productions run safely, smoothly and on time. They assist with productions at St Mary’s Hall and their College portfolio includes two annual drama productions, dance performances, the GCSE and A-Level productions, and assisting at balls and events such as the Poetry Banquet and the Rhetoric Ball.
THE STONYHURST CADET CORPS - AN INTEGRAL STONYHURST TRADITION
Working as a theatre technician promotes teamwork, acquiring the ability to work under pressure and encourages an understanding of the production process and theatre production techniques. Without this team and their skilled use of the equipment, the show cannot go on!
The Corps shooting team has won many awards including, amongst others, the North West District Loyals and Home Guards Trophy, the Elizabeth McGuinness Trophy (F Class at Bisley up to 1000 yards), the Cadets Gallery Rifle Competition and the Financial Times Trophy. This year, four of our Rhetoricians have been selected to represent the County Palatine of Lancaster for Smallbore Shooting.
The Corps at Stonyhurst has long held an important position at the school and is a vibrant part of many pupils’ lives. The Corps is a chance for boys and girls to develop leadership, teamwork and resilience. Termly field trips and our annual summer camps are enjoyed by all and for many, involvement in the Corps is a highlight of their time at school: they form lifelong friendships and learn valuable lessons about perseverance, respect and determination.
The provision of additional indoor rifles will allow more pupils to experience shooting at Stonyhurst.
Equipment List • 4 x ‘spot moving head’ lights • 2 x flight cases to allow the lights to be safely stored and transported
The Corps has also overseen the resurrection of Clay Pigeon Shooting at the College. The next phase of this project is to build a Clay Pigeon Shooting team, through the addition of two further shotguns to our armoury.
• 8 x colour wash LED lights • 2 x flight cases for storing and transporting the lights
Equipment List • 2 x Indoor Rifles • 2 x 12 Bore Shotguns

AN OPPORTUNITY TO CATCH UP OVER A COFFEE Converted coffee and refreshment horseboxes have become a popular feature at many schools in recent years. Stonyhurst’s hockey, rugby, netball and football fixtures would benefit from such a popular new resource. Our proposed Stonyhurst horsebox coffee shop will be mobile and able to be transported to the most convenient site close to fixtures. We hope in time that our pupils will have the opportunity to hone their business skills running this facility.
This will ensure that the audience won’t miss a thing!
Equipment List

• Vintage-style horsebox • Conversion into a coffee shop • Coffee machines • Refrigerator • Generator • Lighting
• 4 x Sennheiser EW172G4 Wireless Systems, Power Leads, Paddle Antenna and Rack Cases • 8 x Sennheiser EW172G4 Wireless Systems, Power Leads, Paddle Antenna and Rack Cases
If a member of the Stonyhurst community was able to donate a vintage-style horsebox, this would allow the project to move forwards very quickly, reducing the fit-out costs to £8,000 and allowing us to improve the spectator experience far more quickly!

The sheer volume of activities taking place in The Centenaries Theatre at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall is vast. We want to further improve the performance experience for pupils and parents alike by investing in a set of radio microphones. This will provide an additional learning experience for the pupil ‘techies’ working behind the scenes learning to control the technical aspects of creating a concert, play, nativity or any of their many performances.
Stonyhurst Polo
Fishing on the Hodder
£5,000
Gifts of Fishing Rods
THE STONYHURST POLO TEAM We are delighted that polo has recently become such a valued part of our extracurricular programme, providing a popular new activity for our pupils. A mix of riding, hockey and soccer, polo has a tremendous amount of physical benefits. It improves hand-eye coordination, upper body strength and postural strength and takes place in the great outdoors. We need to equip our team with new Stonyhurst helmets, knee guards, boots, saddles and mallets as Team Stonyhurst once more returns to the pitch.
A TRADITIONAL, TRANQUIL PASTIME In recent times, the racks for storing fishing rods have stood empty in the Gatehouse. We are keen to encourage our pupils to resume this relaxing and skilful pastime, exercising the College’s fishing rights to the Hodder. We plan to restore the racks within the Gatehouse so that the rods can be held securely, reviving a Stonyhurst tradition in the process.

The Gift of Education The Stonyhurst Foundation TRANSFORMING LIVES St Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits, wanted to make Jesuit education as widely available as possible. We are proud to have remained true to this objective since the school’s foundation by providing bursaries. Granting such awards constitutes an increasingly heavy demand on our finances and there is a limit to the number of children that we can support from school funds. Therefore, the Stonyhurst Foundation, a ring-fenced, capital-protected, bursary fund was launched in 2020 with the intention of removing financial barriers, making a Stonyhurst education available to as many young people as possible. All bursary donations received under the Annual Fund will be transferred to the Foundation where they will be endowed to support bursary provision in perpetuity.
WAYS YOU CAN GIVE We would be delighted to accept gifts of whatever size to support whichever project(s) you choose within the Stonyhurst Annual Fund 2020/2021. You are welcome to make a single gift or a regular donation.
