Girls’ Preparatory School Co-Curricular Booklet 2020-2021 1

Letter from Ms Stewart, Head of the Girls’ Preparatory School One of the greatest things we can do as a School is give pupils the opportunity to try out the previously unexplored and unimagined. This in turn enables them to have fun, enjoy exciting experiences, develop new talents and find out what ‘their thing’ might just be. We are very proud of the Co-curricular offering at the Girls’ Prep, as we believe it gives the pupils a broad spectrum of activities from which to choose. Reading through this booklet gives you a great sense of what is on offer, and I hope that you enjoy talking to your daughters about which clubs they would most like to attend. I cannot wait to see these groups up and running, as the girls take full advantage of all the exciting opportunities available to them, and I have no doubt that we will see some new skills and aspirations emerge!

Ms Stewart

This booklet was created for the 2020-2021 academic year, expecting a full timetable to run. Whilst it has had to be paired back owing to the restrictions of COVID, this provides a full breadth of the offering available during a normal school year.

Art

Each Art session is based on a famous artist or art form. We learn a few facts about the artist’s technique and life, and then the pupils create their own interpretation of what we have looked at. This includes sculpture, painting, drawing 2D and 3D. Art Club can be enjoyed by all, either as a time to have fun (as there is no right or wrong way to paint), or as a place to help your child work on her skills and portfolio if she does wish to apply for an Art Scholarship. Surbiton Ultra Mathematical Society Surbiton Ultra Mathematical Society (SUMS) Junior is our new club for Year 5 (Spring and Summer) and Year 6 (Autumn) mathematicians. It’s based on our Senior School SUMS, a club for those who enjoy solving mathematical puzzles. Every year, we send the best two Year 8 and Year 9 SUMS regulars to the UKMT Team Maths Challenge, where they get to compete against as many as thirty other schools. You don’t have to be the best in Maths in your class to join SUMS Junior, just enjoy solving puzzles and problems, and have a bit of persistence so you don’t give up when you can’t see a way to a solution straight away. The club will be run on Thursdays in the Senior School, by our Senior School Maths Department, who are looking forward to seeing a group of enthusiastic young mathematicians, raring to get their teeth into some new problem-solving skills! Dance and Drama

Dance and Drama At Surbiton High Girls’ Preparatory School, we believe in a holistic education and thus Dance and Drama is an essential part of our curriculum. The benefits of Performing Arts permeate every area of our lives, both personal and social, and therefore it is crucial that our girls be exposed to this subject at a young age. Our girls are taught practical and theoretical skills that will be of value far beyond their schooling careers. We focus on the development of motor skills, spatial awareness, rhythm, communication, vocalisation, improvisation, effective acting techniques and the expression of the whole body, all with the end goal of developing confident, creative individuals. Pupils from Reception to Year 6 are given opportunities to perform both in and outside the classroom, both in formal Dance and Drama lessons, as well as in Co-curricular Dance Clubs and Drama Clubs. Every year, Surbiton High Girls’ Prep hosts a Key Stage 1 Nativity play and Year 4 and Year 6 major productions, often taking the form of a musical. In addition to this, Year 3 and Year 5 have the opportunity to perform in their own Dance and Drama showcase. There are also opportunities for performance in Inter-House Competitions, Poetry Day recitals and class assemblies.

Junior Ski Club Please come and join the Surbiton High School Junior Ski Club. The programme will deliver the best opportunities for your child to become a very proficient skier. Whether they want to improve their technique ready for a family holiday, or want to develop into a ski racer, this club provides a platform to cover it all. Due to the nature of the sport and to ensure quality of coaching and maximisation of progress, there are limited places and the club runs throughout the whole year. This means that we are not always Club

able to take on newcomers mid-way through the year. We do run learn to ski courses for those who haven’t skied before in preparation for joining the club the following year. Additional Information: We expect pupils to be able to confidently snowplough, stop and do link turns as well as being able to use the button lift unaided.

Football Club

This session provides the opportunity for girls in Years 3 and 4 to be introduced, in a friendly, supportive environment, to the sport of football. The focus of the club is ensuring that the pupils who participate enjoy the game, irrespective of their ability, and are given the chance to develop their coordination and basic skills at their own pace through the playing of a wide range of fun, football-related games. This club is the perfect way to help with increasing the girls’ confidence that football can be a sport for them to participate in, both inside and outside the school environment.

Trips and Visits

Residential Trips We believe that residential trips away form a vital part of the girls’ personal and social development. Girls have the opportunity to build on their independence and self-confidence, strengthen friendships and take on challenges that they may have once thought beyond them. In Year 3, the girls go away for a one-night trip to Hindleap Warren (approximately £135). In Year 4, they go further afield for a two-night trip to Hooke Court in Dorset (approximately £225). Year 5 girls also go to Dorset, but for three nights in the coastal town of Swanage (approximately £335). In the Summer Term, they visit the UK Sailing Academy (UKSA) in Cowes, Isle of Wight. The girls will take part in a variety of watersports, including dinghy sailing, keelboating, stand up paddleboarding, windsurfing and kayaking (approximately £510). All the girls come back from each trip with treasured memories that can last a lifetime!

Houses and Charity

House System The House system is an important part of school life. Each of the girls belong to one of three Houses – Arundel, Balmoral or Caernarvon. There are a number of competitions across the year in which the girls compete against each other while representing their House. These are hotly contested and vary each term, but recent battles have included a selection of sporting competitions, as well as our joint Prep annual singing competition. Every year usually culminates in our Sports Day and 2020 was no exception, except that this year, we held a House Spirit Day which was completed virtually and included artistic and musical elements. Each House is led by a teacher and two House Captains. The Year 6 girls are given the opportunity to put themselves forward as the most eligible candidates to lead their House to victory. Voting takes place each September and the elected captains are responsible for leading their House for the rest of the year. Throughout each term, all the girls in the School are keen to receive House points that go towards the weekly totals.

52

Charities

At Surbiton High Girls’ Preparatory School, we actively encourage and support girls to participate in a range of fundraising activities. Numerous fundraising events are held and celebrated throughout the year, reinforcing the School’s motto ‘May Love Always Lead Us’ and supporting the ethos to serve and respect others. At the start of the academic year, all girls are given the opportunity to nominate a charity for the School to support over the course of a term. They are required to give a short presentation to the Charity Committee, detailing the reasons why the charity is important to them and why we should support them. They also outline their ideas for fundraising events. Six to eight of these charities are shortlisted and are then presented to the whole School, who then have the unenviable task of voting for the two pupil-chosen charities that will be supported over the coming year.

In addition, three years ago, our Year 6 leadership team were instrumental in developing a relationship with a local homeless charity called SPEAR, whom we support year on year, bringing the total number of charities supported each year to three. We invite a representative from the charities to present an assembly to the School in order to broaden the girls’ knowledge of the importance of the charity. Charity endeavour continues to grow at the Girls’ Prep. Each class plans their own charity events and popular ones this year have been our book sale, Christmas break time fun week together with our remote learning events, reverse mufti lockdown and T-shirt design. The girls are passionate about fundraising and each year group organise and run their own events.

53

Houses and Charity

The Pupil Leadership Team Every September, a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and Secretary are elected from Year 6. These three girls are joined by a representative from each class (from Year 1 upwards) who are elected by their class at the start of the year. The Pupil Leadership Team (PLT) meet regularly with the Deputy Head to discuss their forms, any concerns they may have, and their suggestions to improve school life. In KS2, the representatives use their iPads, and in KS1, a suggestion book, for members to record their ideas for improving the School, which are discussed each week. Then, each term, the Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary ensure any concerns raised are being addressed and that any projects are being successfully led.

Charity Committee At the heart of our school’s ethos is the importance of teaching our girls the importance of doing good deeds for others, using love and citizenship as our guiding forces. Therefore, we have a separate Charity Committee to ensure that our charitable work is focused and genuinely worthwhile. Not only does the Committee play an instrumental role in shortlisting the chosen charities for the forthcoming year, but they then meet regularly to organise the various charity events that the School puts on. Charity Committee members are vital to the successful fundraising that we, as a School, have done and continue to achieve for our local and wider community.

54

Form Captains Every Form also nominates girls to be chosen as Form Captains. Their roles are to support and assist their teachers and peers within the classroom. They are also given control of a small budget, which they are encouraged to spend on improving their Form Room. Girls are encouraged to ‘apply’ for these positions and to consider what qualities they have that are suitable for the role.

Information

Holiday Gymnastics Club During the holiday periods, the gymnastics coaching staff run a Gym Club. The sessions are divided into two age groups: KS1 and KS2, which will cater for all ages and abilities. We will work on the basics of movement and balance in KS1 and then move on to more advanced jumps, rolls and sequences in KS2. We will also introduce some pair and group work for both age groups, as well as some fun gymnastic-based games as part of the warm-up and cool-down. For more information, please contact Mr Adam Buckingham via email at adam.buckingham@surbitonhigh.com.

How do I enrol my daughter in a club? In the first few days of the Autumn Term, you will receive this Co-curricular booklet via MIS outlining information about the clubs we are offering. All bookings for clubs are taken via an online booking system, SOCS, using the online details that you will be sent as part of your Friday communications for the Autumn Term, along with details of any costs involved. Following this, you will be able to log on to confirm details of the clubs for your daughter. For the Spring and Summer Terms, we will send registration information soon after each half term to register for the following term. If you have any questions, please contact Mr Chris Beck via email at prepclubs@surbitonhigh.com 58

Breakfast and After School Club The clubs take place in the Dining Hall of the Surbiton Assembly Rooms and are supervised by qualified staff with a ratio of one staff member to eight pupils. The clubs take place each day during term time and provide a safe, happy environment for your child. The Breakfast Club is available to all pupils from 7.30am until the start of your child’s school day. A nutritious breakfast is available until 8.15am. This includes a choice of porridge, cereal, toast, yoghurt and fruit juice. Pupils are escorted to their School for the start of their school day. The After School Club is available from the end of your child’s school day until 6.00pm. A healthy snack is offered, including freshly made sandwiches, fruit and vegetables

and a hot option of beans on toast. There is a homework and study area and, at the end of the afternoon, staffsupervised films and educational games. Both clubs offer a variety of activities such as art and craft, construction kits, role play, board games and sport. If you are interested in using the clubs, please contact our Breakfast and After School Club Manager, Ms Marrison, via email at afterschoolclub@surbitonhigh.com.
