NURSERY
WELCOME TO BURGESS HILL GIRLS Welcome, Our main aim at Burgess Hill Nursery is to encourage each and every boy and girl to ‘have a go’ and embrace all that nursery life has to offer. I am very fortunate to have a dedicated, friendly team who love working with little ones and supporting their development. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and have been ‘Outstanding’ rated ever since the Nursery was launched in 2008. To quote our most recent inspection report; “the education programmes provide interesting and challenging experiences, which are highly effective in promoting the children’s language, communication, personal, social and emotional development.” This guide will give you a feel for our Nursery and hopefully it will inspire you to visit soon with your children. We would love to meet you.

STUDENT INTERVIEW
“I love my Nursery but most of all the teachers, they dance to my favourite songs with me.”
OLIVIA | BADGERS TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I am Olivia and I am 4. I have golden hair like Rapunzel but it’s not as long. My friends call me Livvy and say I’m funny. TELL US ABOUT BURGESS HILL NURSERY? I love my Nursery but most of all the teachers, they dance to my favourite songs with me. In Hedgehogs I liked to play in the sand and sit in the circle. In Badgers you do the register and then you sit with friends. We have snacks like oranges and do lots of learning. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT? I can write my name with a big O because it’s a capital. I can count up to 39. Did you
know that the world is a ball? It’s called a sphere and a baked bean tin is called a cinema (we think she means cylinder!). I looked at roots with Mrs Williams, they look like spaghetti! WHAT DO YOU LIKE DOING AT NURSERY? I love running! I run at Nursery outside, you can’t run inside at Nursery. I loved my sports day, I won my running race. I love looking at books with my friends, we always share books at Nursery. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO IN THE FUTURE? I will be a mummy and a teacher. I am going to be a librarian too so I can be quiet and look at books. I like rhyming books best.

BADGERS & SQUIRRELS Badgers and Squirrels are our classes for children aged three to four.
“Beatrice talks of wonderful experiences and we have seen her progress with her writing, numbers and knowledge. I love the creative approach the pre-school uses to help children learn including their social and emotional development.” BEATRICE’S MUM 8
We continue to use a practice of ‘sustained shared thinking’ primarily through play. Children develop their skills of enquiry, creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, reasoning and conflict resolution. We also help children develop their social and emotional skills so they are ‘school ready’. EXAMPLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS: • • • • • • •
Understand key processes and changes in the natural world Say Phonetic letter sounds and be able to read some words Verbally count beyond 20 and compare quantities up to 10. Listen attentively and participate in whole class discussions Move energetically with coordination, strength and agility Draw with care and have the required skills for fluent writing Show resilience and perseverance in the face of challenges

PART OF THE COMMUNITY Burgess Hill Nursery is fortunate to be located on the Burgess Hill Girls campus, a beautiful 14 acre conservation area in the centre of Burgess Hill. Our modern Nursery, which was built in 2008, has its own spacious classrooms as well as a fantastic outdoor play area. We also benefit from access to the Burgess Hill Girls’ playing fields, gymnasium and performance spaces. It’s not just about facilities, teachers from Burgess Hill Girls frequently visit the Nursery to pass on their experience and knowledge. As children progress through the Nursery there are
