PRE-PREP & PREP
WELCOME TO BURGESS HILL GIRLS Welcome, Burgess Hill Girls Pre-Prep & Prep School is a happy and supportive community. Happiness is the keystone to girls’ growth in self-confidence, resilience and the essential foundation in ensuring girls feel supported both academically and emotionally. We are very proud of our ‘can-do’ attitude which remains with the girls as they progress through the school. Our confident and happy girls embrace the challenges and risk that new learning experiences bring. This is balanced with our ‘play-hard’ factor, which comes from a full and varied co-curricular programme including performing arts, creative activities, sports, charity fund-raising, visits and residential trips. This guide only provides a snapshot of our school. Please come and take a look for yourself to see all that is outstanding about what we do. The girls, teachers and I look forward to welcoming you when you visit.

PRE-PREP Our Pre-Prep, for girls in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, builds upon the early spark ignited in our Nursery. We nurture the girls so that their sparkle continues to shine ever brighter. The focus for the younger girls is the development of their social skills and the embedding of key academic knowledge such as phonics and place value. Each girl is supported on her tailored learning journey, and their natural desire to explore the world is harnessed to encourage girls to try new experiences. Each academic day consists of a daily phonics lesson and a maths lesson. Early reading skills are developed through daily one-to-one reading and number bonds practice. Girls in Reception class will also follow a programme of child-initiated activities whilst girls in Year 1 and Year 2 will follow our enhanced schemes of work, built on top of the National Curriculum. All work is enhanced by out-of-school visits and practical activities. The girls also enjoy an extra-curricular programme including dance, sport and creative workshops.

WHAT MAKES BURGESS HILL GIRLS SPECIAL?
My name is Sasha, I am six years old and in Year 1. I started in Burgess Hill Nursery. My friends would say I am funny. I am also brilliant at riding my bike and drinking orange Fanta.
I like going to Oaks Hall. Sometimes I do PE in there and we have celebration assembly in there at the end of the week.
WHAT IS IT LIKE IN THE PRE-PREP?
I am going to be a doctor like Florence Nightingale, or a vet or a teacher.
I have lots of fun. I like seeing my friends. The teachers are very nice and help me a lot. I love doing Art and Sports lessons. I also like lunch. Alan is very funny. I eat all my vegetables and fruit because they make me strong.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO IN THE FUTURE?
“I have lots of fun. I like seeing my friends. The teachers are very nice and help me a lot.”

“The teachers encourage me to do my best every day even at times when things are tricky. This then motivates me to do even better.” EMILIA | YEAR 5
PREP Whilst Prep is about preparing the girls for Senior School, it equally has its own unique purpose, which is to establish good learning habits and attitudes. Independence is nurtured and mental robustness and personal resilience grow through designed personal challenges. Girls are encouraged to employ a growth mindset attitude to all new experiences, be they academic, physical or social. Our vast co-curricular programme ensures girls can gain from an array of experiences. These include sport such as karate and gymnastics, art and creative activities, as well as cerebral activities such as chess and board games that develop logical and analytical skills. The girls also benefit from an annual residential trip to support their growing independence as well as visits to enrich learning experiences. The girls organise and implement charity fundraising through our House structure, and we develop community responsibility and leadership through our school council and prefect system.

Girls are also encouraged to take part in a range of activities including sports matches, academic competitions, music performances and day and overnight trips. We are also active in the local community, putting on performances and an almost never-ending variety of fundraisers!
