Stonyhurst Rugby Courses At Stonyhurst we believe sport is an essential component of life. Participation in sport is a vital element of a healthy lifestyle, which enhances academic performance and fosters collaboration, concentration, confidence and leadership skills. Stonyhurst is famous for its rugby, providing a number of pupils with the training and experience to go on to have successful professional sporting careers. We can boast several international sportspeople among our alumni, including Joe Ansbro (former Scottish International player), Will Greenwood, Kyran Bracken and Iain Balshaw (England World Cup winners, 2003). Stonyhurst is launching its first intensive Rugby Course in August 2020, for boys and girls aged 10-16 who are looking to improve their rugby skills. Led by a Level 3 qualified Rugby Coach, the focus will be on educating players in key

areas of rugby development, as well as covering fundamental aspects of skill progression. Attendees will be expected to have an understanding of the techniques and rules of the game. We aim to deliver an enjoyable and rewarding pre-season training course, focusing on game based coaching, which will equip players with the skills and confidence they require to fulfil their sporting potential.

Our professional coaches will bring their wealth of experience and commitment along with a range of skills that ensures top-class coaching, and encourages enjoyment and participation.

Game based coaching is extremely effective and enables players to enjoy themselves, whilst getting the most out of the coaching programme.

Joe Ansbro Former International Professional Rugby Union Player Former Stonyhurst Pupil Joe Ansbro was a pupil at Stonyhurst between 1994 and 2004. Ansbro left Stonyhurst to read Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, before launching his professional rugby career. He made his international debut for Scotland in 2010 playing against South Africa, followed by his first Six Nations appearance against France in 2011. Ansbro also played for Scotland in the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. He retired following a career ending injury in 2012 and is now a professional rugby coach and biology teacher.

All places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so please book early to avoid disappointment. Payments must be made at the time of booking.

Rugby Coaching Schedule Each session will be carefully planned to focus on a particular skill and develop students to their full potential. We are focused on delivering technical, tactical and physical improvements, relative to each student’s ability, and enabling them to translate this onto the rugby pitch. Our aim is to develop players who are creative, aware, resilient, decision makers and self-organisers.
